Trojan in Win32 binary?

Symantec Anti-virus is detecting Trojan.Zlob in Inkscape-0.44-1.win32.exe and also in uninst.exe once Inkscape is installed. I guess it has to do with a current update of the virus definitions because when I originally downloaded and installed Inkscape no virus was detected, however redownloading the binary immediately triggers the on-access scanner. I hope this is a false positive, but I would appreciate this if you would investigate this. And may I suggest pulling the binary from Sourceforge in the meantime to prevent possible inflections? So I was fighting with the Xfixes dependency in the Autopackage. Do the INKSCAPE_LIBS or LIKSCAPE_CFLAGS variables work like ./configure --help says they do? Even though I set and export them different values continue to end un in the Makefile. Aaron Spike

Can't compile, can't find libgc

When I try to configure Inkscape 0.44, I get a message: checking gc.h usability... yes checking gc.h presence... yes checking for gc.h... yes checking for GC_init in -lgc... yes checking libgc version 6.4+... 6.3.255 no configure: error: libgc (the Boehm Conservative Collector) 6.4+, is needed to compile inkscape -- http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Hans_Boehm/gc I have libgc 6.7 installed, so I'm not certain why Inkscape doesn't like it. PDF export Fails exporting bitmap.

When saving an SVG whith imported bitmap and vectors, only vectors are exported to PDF. NO IMAGES appears in PDF. :( Another thing I observed is that there are no way to configure PDF-WEB or PDF-PRINT ouput: Only a pdf export mode is aviable. It was so interesting offers too a single configuration dialog to choose output PDF format and page size. ;) Thanks and good work! Inkscape 0.44 is great!

(sorry for posting the patch here -- logins are currently disabled over at sf.net so I can't put it in the tracker) As I didn't manage to finish this in time for 0.44 I now release what I have early in the release cycle to make sure it gets thoroughly reviewed/tested before 0.45. I have made the change suggested by mental (see http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1423034&group_id=9…): An Event struct has been introduced which stores an XML::Event annotated with a Verb used for grouping and icon, and an ustring for description. A verb and description is passed with each sp_document_(maybe_)done call. I have tried to put accurate verbs in most of the calls, but at some places I'm not sure what a relevant verb would be. Event descriptions, however, is left to be done. Help with this would be appreciated; there are about 250 descriptions to be written and English is not my mother tongue... -- Gustav Broberg

You can create an image in a PDF by using the image XObject and image dictionaries. standard do operator for using them on the pdf page. As for the options, there are lots of them, for the page, for the document and other things you wouldn't even dream of. migration references

Hi, Recently I started a series of migration references in Russian at linuxgraphics.ru's knowledge base (wiki): http://www.linuxgraphics.ru/wiki/doku.php?id=quicktoots-migration For each pair it covers topics like migration of documents, resources/assets (brushes, swatches etc.), correspondence of tools, how features of one application are implemented in the other one etc. Work on "Illustrator -> Inkscape" pair has begun. Corel DRAW and Xara will be covered later (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Xara_X looks useful). I'm not sure about Macromedia Freehand, since it's acquired by Adobe and seems to have no future, but I won't prevent people from adding useful information :) I would be glad to co-operate with other people interested in such references, doing English version side by side. The question is, what would be the most suitable "format" for Inkscape project? Possibilities that I see: 1. Corresponding pages in Inkscape's wiki. 2. Only online tutorials (HTML). 3. Both online and offline tutorials, i.e. also included in releases as SVGs (welcome, DocBook/XML). What do you think? Alexandre

Zero Install metadata for Inkscape 0.44

I've added the RPM for 0.44 to the Zero Install interface file. I've put up a copy here: http://0install.net/tests/Inkscape.xml Run this way, the RPM works on Debian/unstable, Debian/testing and Ubuntu/5.10 (if you have libglitz, libstdc++6, libgtkspell0, libgnomevfs2-0 and libxslt1.1 installed). It does not work on Debian/sarge (due to a (bogus?) dependency on pangocairo). If you'd like to host this on the inkscape.org site, the steps are: 1. Download the XML above: $ wget http://0install.net/tests/Inkscape.xml 2. Get 0publish (if you don't have it already): $ 0alias 0publish http://0install.net/2006/interfaces/0publish 3. Set the URI to the address on the inkscape site where it will be made available, and resign with your GPG key: $ 0publish Inkscape.xml \ --set-interface-uri=http://inkscape.org/2006/Inkscape.xml \ --key=Jean 4. This will also create a .gpg file with your public key. Upload both to the same directory on the web-server. People will then be able to install it using: $ 0alias inkscape http://inkscape.org/2006/Inkscape.xml or by dragging to their GUI installer. Wiki Users Page

I notice that there are a lot of users with wiki pages in the main namespace (ie # BryceHarrington). Each user of the wiki has a page under "User:username" if people that have user pages that do not start with "User:" please merge and redirect your old page.

Filters UI

It's probably early to start working on it, but where should the filters UI be placed? I suppose the most obvious choice would be having a new "Filter" entry on the "Object" menu, and on context menu. Another option would be to modify the "Fill and Stroke" dialog to incorporate a new filter tab, but I think this would be a bit out of context. Another issue is the layout within this filter UI, which can become very complex if not handled correctly... Any ideas? Not urgent questions, but it would help to hear the community's opinion on this. Hugo

Inkscape Announces 0.44 Release :: http://www.inkscape.org The Inkscape community today officially released the latest version of its vector graphic drawing software. Inkscape 0.44 adds many new features, is faster and more usable, better supports SVG, is translated into more languages (17 on last count), and adds a lot of polish and refinement. Major new features include Layers dialog, support for clipping and masking, improved PDF export with transparency, configurable keyboard shortcuts, innovative "node sculpting" capability in Node tool, and the Outline mode. Significant gains are achieved in performance, especially in screen rendering and Node tool. Noticeable user interface changes include docked color swatches, interactive style indicator in the statusbar, a redesigned preferences dialog, a text toolbar, and new icons. Our SVG compliance has also taken a step forward, with the added support for the <switch> tag and ICC color profiles for images. This release also includes hundreds of smaller features, usability enhancements and bug fixes. For several releases, a collection of extension effects was shipped with Inkscape, but the Effects menu to access them was turned off by default. With this release, it has become mature enough, with effects working out of the box on all platforms, so this menu is enabled. Hi, I finally wrote the report I wanted to write since weeks... :) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Report_on_c%27t_article_12/2006 This is a report on a review article of vector programs (including Inkscape 0.43) in the German c't magazine, issue 12/2006, subtitled "Inexpensive vector drawing programs for amateurs" The article can be bought at http://www.heise.de/kiosk/archiv/ct/06/12/168/ The price limit for programs in the test was 100 EUR. Besides Inkscape 0.43, the following programs were reviewed: Tribar Inform 1.0 (http://www.tribarsw.net), Zoner Zoner Draw 5 (http://zoner.com), Serif DrawPlus 8 (http://www.serif.com), Purgatory Intaglio 2.7 (http://www.purgatorydesign.com), Xara Xtreme 2.0f (http://www.xara.com), Microsoft Expression Grafic Designer CTP (formerly Acrylic) (http://www.microsoft.com) They say Expression is likely to cost more than 100 EUR once it's out of its preview phase, so it would not belong in that test anymore. In short, Inkscape got the following rating (from --, -, ., +, ++): Import and Export: - Exact Drawing/Freehand: ++/- Text design/Prepress: ./-- Efficient work/Documentation: +/-- Winners were DrawPlus and Xara, with Expression and Intaglio still better than Inkscape, the rest got lower ratings than Inkscape. The article text itself is IMO more friendly toward Inkscape than the rating says. The text lists some highlights (both positive and negative) of each program, and for Inkscape, they were: * is a bit sluggish * has dynamic connectors * one cannot find help for a specific tool * uses SVG internally and thus is restricted to SVG features; so gradients are limited to linear or radial ones * potrace is far ahead in the quality of its tracing * no justified text * no artistic strokes apart from calligraphy, but it uses the angle information from a tablet, and also supports thickness by mouse speed * writes EPS but doesn't read it in again - this hinders easy exchange of drawings with other programs * bitmap export is limited to PNG * SVG files are included only as a link, if one wants to send a drawing to someone else, one has to take care to manually include all necessary files * documentation is SVG where one can directly use the tools, but one doesn't have links nor an index * documentation cannot really be searched - search is limited to the current document and doesn't jump from hit to hit, but just highlights them all, and the user has to comb though these * an extensive guide is being built at http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/index.html * normally is stable, but slower than the other programs * is under heavy development, but documentation makes it hard for newbies * usable for productive work I'm now picking some of the good points of the other programs that they deemed worthy of mentioning: * features for web designers (slicing, connect with links, rollover buttons) * animation features and export to animated GIFs * CAD capabilities for technical drawings (dynamic dimension lines) * no program supports connected text boxes * movies for documentation * natural brushes * bitmaps can be distorted * user-defined styles * centrally defined colors that can be changed later (derived colors also change) * device profiles, Pantone, process colors, overprinting when doing color separation, color control bars, crop marks * cliparts, symbols, schematic symbols, fonts * vector and bitmap layer, when changing layer type, tools also change * distortion grid * node sculpting * pressure profile of a tablet stroke can be adjusted retroactively * randomization of strokes in width, hue, transparency * hyphenation, spell checking, indentation, tabulators, multi-page documents * when drawing a path, nodes (or even the node control points) can be moved without finishing the line first * dynamic guides * measurement tool with selectable unit * shadows get more fuzzy with increasing distance from an object * user-defined line ends * copies of an object can be aligned along a path (Please keep in mind that I'm translating this from German, if something is unclear, just ask: colin (at) marquardt-home (dot) de)

Compiling on RHEL 4 (GTK+ 2.4), patches

Hi, I noticed various issues when compiling on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4: 1. Various source files use system functions printf(), sscanf(), mkdir() but did not include the appropriate header files and are therefore GCC fails complaining about the missing prototypes. One might want to add "#include <cstdio>" when using the first two functions, and refer "man 2 mkdir" for the requirements of mkdir. 2. While configure specifies "gtk+-2.0 >= 2.4.0", there are a few changes that made Inkscape in fact requiring at least GTK+ 2.6, while the changes themselves would be easy to adapt to GTK+ 2.4. 3. One might argue whether this is Inkscape's fault, but similarly, Inkscape did not catch the annoyance of glib 2.4 headers contain macros that are colliding with libintl.h, in a graceful fashion. This can be solved to include libintl.h each time before glibmm/i18n.h (and extern "C" is needed because "#ifdef __cplusplus" is missing in libintl.h from older glibc headers). I also made a (not really useful) patch that at least make --with-perl link properly. Stroke width rendering bug when switching between normal and outline display mode

I just downloaded 0.44 from SF (Inkscape-0.44-1.win32.exe) and found that when I switch from normal to outline (or vice versa) the stroke width is maintained (even though the color does change). Zooming in or out fixes it. Does anyone else have this problem or am I overlooking something? (it seems so obvious a bug that I thought I'd check before filing a bug report) Steps to reproduce: - Set display mode to normal. - Create a line with a stroke width that's visibly larger than one. - Now switch to outline mode. On my system the line retains its original width on screen, zooming in or out changes it to a hair line (as I'd expect in outline mode). To see the reverse, after having zoomed in or out, switch back to normal mode. Now the line remains a hair line, zooming in or out makes it look like it should again.

Char * file names

Hi, all, After digging around the code looking for a particular bug, I was struck by the fact that although Inkscape went through the "c++ification" process almost 2 years ago, a great many of the classes are still merely wrappers of the legacy code. One thing I noticed in particular was that char *'s are still used in most of the code for the storage of file names and xml string data. Wouldn't this cycle be a good time to convert these to Glib::ustring? We would get at least three benefits: 1) A uniform container and set of methods for Unicode data 2) Greater pointer safety if we can avoid countless explicit alloc/frees. 3) It would be harder to go out of bounds, since the string carries its size. And if you do, it is an exception, not a malloc or stack corruption. I'm not talking about the GC'd stuff, but those so frequent snips of code like this: if (uri) g_free(uri); uri = g_strdup(newuri); In addition, shouldn't a document's "DocumentBase" uri (and resources it references) be a real W3C URI, or even an IRI? That way we can get a consistent method for referring to things, rather than always calculating paths explicitly all over the code tree. Just a suggestion! :) bob

If xslt processing is going to be done in the final user machine, we should not expect the user have even Java. And Inkscape is already dependent upon libxml2/libxslt (am I wrong?). So, it seems there are three things that can be done: 1.- Have the user to install Java and Saxon to see the documentation. 2.- Achieve the same things that Java and Saxon do using libxslt and some extension module. 3.- Pregenerate all the svg help files and use them pregenerated, as is being done till now. I'm not very fond of 1. Using 3 excludes the option of a thin format for documenting extensions (perhaps as part of .inx files). So I'm going to look closer at 2. Hi there, Sorry for the late reply (and for my previous message which was sent by mistake:P)... I had voted yes for the merging before on Jabber. It seems it's been done already anyway. I don't think there will be much instability caused by filters development, and it will be good for us to get some feedback from others. As for what's been done until now, Niko made a good synthesis. Most of SPFilter and SPGaussianBlur is implemented, and next steps should be fixing any missing bits of these classes and integrating them with Niko's visualization part. Things started a bit slowly but seem to be speeding up now and on the right way. I'll keep you informed on progress... Hugo

Unless some new showstopper bugs are found, I think pre4 should be OK to release as 0.44. There's one thing to be done before that, however. I really don't like the new About screen. Cmarqu has pointed out that C't magazine is running an article in their next release promoting the Inkscape 0.44 release. This comes out in 2 days. This means we have a huge opportunity here if 0.44 can be finished and windows packages made available by June 24th. If we fail to achieve this, we will probably greatly disappoint a lot of readers who will come looking for this release. As I understand it, there are no bugs left holding up the 0.44.0 release, and it's only cosmetic issues at this point (e.g. about screen tweaks). I know for an art tool that getting cosmetics well polished is important, but I would like to strongly suggest we release ASAP, and put a big priority on getting Windows and OSX packages generated of that within the next two days, so that we can take advantage of the C't publication. We have planned a 0.44.1 exactly with the intention of avoiding allowing small issues like these from delaying a release. Let's go with whatever is easiest for the about screen for now, and leave perfecting it for 0.44.1. Bryce

Hi all, I don't know if everyone saw my recent blog entry on XCF: http://blogs.gnome.org/view/bolsh/2006/06/19/0 Through that I found Henning Makholm's xcftools at http://henning.makholm.net/software - he has abstracted away the GIMP, and coded a decent png/pnm export filter for XCF which takes into account layer masks and layer modes. You can also extract individual layers with it. It would be really cool to have this encapsulated in a nice simple API for getting layers from an XCF - and I thought it might benefit ye (since ye're doing XCF support) to have a look at the programs. After discussing it with David Yip we think it would be a good idea to merge the INKBOARD_PEDRO branch into trunk. pedro is stable and there are a few issues with the way the was the branch works that would make it easier to work with in trunk inkboard is pretty self contained and there would be minimal changes to the verb / file / document source files, removing the old inkboard stuff I just thought I should mail the list for the go ahead?

Shall we merge the filters branch into trunk? I've never done this before, but I suspect that it works something like this. Inside of a working copy of trunk type: svn merge -r 12093:HEAD https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/inkscape/inkscape/branches/svg-filters and then commit after fixing any conflicts. Layers dialog

Well, I think we're hitting the home stretch here. I've folded in most of the main functional changes, including scrolling, pop-up menus, in-place editing of layer names, and not rebuilding the entire tree every time you select a different layer. Depending on how robust things are, I may be able to add the eye and lock icons, and to switch the status bar's layer selector to use the same layer manager back-end. However, any poking at it people can do in the mean time would be helpful.

One thing I'd like to address for the 0.45 release cycle is finally flipping Inkscape's coordinate system to match the SVG specification. However, before we can do that, there's one big looming issue: Grid and guides are stored in "Sodipodi coordinates". That means, for example, that a horizontal guide at position 0 will be at the bottom of the page. To address this, I'd like to propose a new feature: allow the user to specify the origin for grid and guides. The UI for the setting would be one of those 9x9 button grid things, which lets you pick one of nine positions: - top left - top center - top right - left center - center - right center - bottom left - bottom center - bottom right Guide positions would be reckoned from the selected edges, so that changing from top left to top right would flip the position of vertical guides. Licensing questions for livarot/libnr

Dear Inkscape developers, I would like to use livarot, which is now part of the Inkscape 0.43 source tree, in a LGPL library. I see that livarot was extensively patched with respect to its original public domain version and integrated with libnr. However I see that both libraries' license was not changed (public domain), with the exception of a few libnr classes (which I do not need), which are explicitly marked as GPL. For the LGPL library I'm working on, do I comply with the license by taking the patched Inkscape version of livarot/libnr (of course ensuring that no explicit GPL code is taken from the rest of Inkscape source tree)? Hi Inkscape translators ! I have just tried to use the babelfish translation on our homepage. Did you try it too? It is located on the bottom of the page. translate to [ Chinese French German Italian Japanese Korean Portuguese Spanish ] When i use the German button, the translation is terrible, to be polite. It produces nonsens and bullshit with no sense at all. It is useless. A relict from old times,when inkscape had no translation of the homepage. Currently we have german, french, italic and spanisch translation which is maintained. It could be improoved. Maybe. I think the best solution is to disable babelfish completly. How do you think about that? Please try that link in your language and give your feedback in this mailinglist.

I think we should create the release branch if we've not done so already, and unfreeze trunk so people can continue working. Deptool on Win32

We have been using the Makedep perl scripts for over two years now, quite successfully. There have been a couple of problems, though which I have been trying to alleviate. One is the requirement for Perl on Win32, which is moot now that there is a full Perl distro in the lib bundle. The other is that the original code is very unreadable, and difficult to maintain. The original SF.net project seems to have gone into hibernation, and the owner hasn't responded to my emails. Also, it would be a great benefit to us if we could process the data in various forms to analyze the inter-file dependencies, and maybe generate charts from it. So, last week I did a reimplementation of the Makedep functionality in C++, calling it DepTool. The file was added to the tree this morning. The makefiles were tweaked to use it instead of mkdep.pl. When it runs, it produces 3 files: make.files : a listing of all of the files which will be analyzed further make.dep : the OBJECTS and INCLUDES definitions, and the dependency list make.ref : a new thing, this is basically the inverse of a dependency list. It lists all .h files, and all files recursively which depend of them. This has the potential to be -very- useful. It takes about 15 seconds to run on the /src directory. It -seems- like it is taking longer, but that it because it doesn't output progress info, to save CPU. It is actually -much- faster than Perl. This is with the added burden of make.ref, which is a slow search. Let me know if you have any major problems with it. bob

Color Cursors

Hey all, The initial commit of color cursors is in... at this point it still needs to read from svg as opposed to pixbufs, and it will also need to be optional for color vs b&w (per bbyak). For note, this does gracefully get around the win2000 issue we had last time (it just falls back on the b&w xpms). I probably won't touch this again for the next few days, but I figured I'd be the first to commit in the reopened trunk. ;) Now to go finish the tutorial and screenshot stuff. I will add the New Feature post when it's complete. :) -Josh

Freeze Lifted; Inkscape 0.44 Branched

Development for 0.45 may resume on the main Inkscape subversion tree. :-) Aaron Spike has created the 0.44 release branch, and him and Jon soon give blessing to the release itself, so that we can begin announcements. Soon all the anticipation will be done! As mentioned previously, we also plan to create a series of stable releases, starting with 0.44.1. Presumably we can expect these every couple weeks or so. We also hope to have 0.45 out within a couple months. Any outstanding branches or patches that we postponed during 0.44 should be merged into HEAD. It's a good idea to pace yourself with these merges so it'll be easier to sort out conflicts. Bryce

Hello, I thought I'd try to install our inkscape rpm on SuSE 10.1 but this is not possible out of the box, we rely on an old version of the expat library, the rpm needs libexpat.so.0, while SuSE ships version so.1. >From a look at rpmfind.net, the switch to .so.1 happened with version 2.0 and SuSE are the first and only to have this. Win32 lib bundle

Hi all, Adib informed me of a dependency bug that one user experienced, where Python would not run because it depends on msvcr71.dll. We currently add msvcr70.dll to the Inkscape package, but apparently not everyone has 7.1. So I made another lib bundle that adds the newer dll. I also included bugfix updates of GLib and Cairo. It is here: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32libs/gtk28-060617.7z I suggest that for this release we supply both dlls, just to be on the safe side. DLLs dont do versions like Unix. Inkscape 'breaks' SVG

Inkscape is implemented as if things that render the same (or just similar even) are the same too, thereby destroying clean code. Which is wrong and makes it near useless for coders, heavily frustrating the number 1 strong point of SVG: letting coders and clickers cooperate. If i use Inkscape for adjusting 1 thing, i want the SVG code of only that 1 thing to change, not have lots of my SVG code changed just because of some internal representation or convenience for the Inkscape implementors. 4 lines together visually forming a square, is not the same as a real square. A name/value attribute pair can sometimes by SVG specification be replaced with some CSS, but even that makes a difference in semantics. Missing Russian dialog image

The tutorial-tracing.ru.svg that's in the latest set of tutorial updates in a patch (#1506381) is missing the potrace-ru.png shot of the dialog. We have potrace.png, potrace-de.png and potrace-fr.png. If someone could attach a potrace-ru.png to the patch, that would let me commit it. We need more screenshots of 0.44 release for our gallery: http://inkscape.org/screenshots/index.php. So far we only have 6. One feature I would especially like to get more screen space is the docked palette with the new default color set. For a user, screenshots are perhaps the most important resource at inkscape.org. It's what most people look at first. New users don't like to read descriptions; they want pretty pictures. Existing users considering upgrade don't like to read release notes; they want pretty pictures. Besides, our screenshots are borrowed by a lot of other sites and thus end up all over the web. All this means that screenshots must be as good as Inkscape itself, if not better. The lack or poor quality of screenshots means the entire project's bad health. What makes a good screenshot? * The best "feature screenshots" are made by the author of the corresponding feature. Nobody knows the feature better than him/her. In fact, if you contribute a major feature, you are pretty much supposed to submit a screenshot of it in action, much as you are supposed to describe it in release notes. [Note to Bob: Can you please make a good screenshot with several different examples of SIOX at work?] * However, we also need high quality "work screenshots" showing professional Inkscape work. If you are doing something complex and/or artistic and it turns out well, please take a moment to shoot the Inkscape window with your work. * Use PNG format (not JPG or GIF). * The screenshot should be dense and informative. 1280x1024 (the preferred screenshot size) is a lot of space, so don't waste it on just one or two bits. When doing a feature screenshot, combine the various aspects of the feature, add captions and descriptions, demonstrate all relevant tricks and nontrivial things that you can think of. When doing a work screenshot, find the best zoom/view of the document, and consider doing a double view of the same or different documents (as here: http://inkscape.org/screenshots/gallery/inkscape-0.41-CVS-linux-davinci.png). In both cases, open the relevant dialogs, switch to relevant tools, and do a selection so that the statusbar message adds more useful info to the picture. * When submitting a screenshot, please also submit a blurb (one-paragraph description) that will accompany it in the gallery. tablet info

Hi, I'm trying to get a handle on some of the tablet support and features. If people could run wacdump and then send me their results directly, that would help http://linuxwacom.sourceforge.net/index.php/howto/wacdump I'm interested in things that don't work but that you'd like to (eraser, buttons, etc.). Also, aside from which items get listed, which do and do not change. For example, if it shows you TILT_X and TILT_Y but they never change their value. And especially what happens when switching to the eraser and any different devices (does "SERIAL" change, etc). As you might have guessed, I don't have a tablet yet myself. However, I would like to chase down a few issues and get things enhanced. For the moment you can just respond to me directly so as to not clutter the lists. Once I get a bit of info, I'll start a few more threads on the lists discussing things. Thanks

Do you have an itch to say something about Inkscape? Well, we need you! The 0.44 release is coming up _awfully_ soon, and we need people who can tell people about it! :-) Basically, what we need are folks to write articles about inkscape 0.44 for online magazines (both Libre and commercial magazines.) Any subject is fine; if nothing else, the articles should serve to help introduce other users to the new features and show how to take good advantage of them. We especially need people who can write for non-English magazines, to help spread inkscape worldwide, so if you are fluent in a non-English language, you are especially valuable!! :-) Here is how to do articles on Inkscape: a) pick a magazine to write for; b) search their site for a page about 'author info' or 'writing' or etc. (maybe linked to from their About or Contacts pages.); d) decide what you want to write about (maybe Inkscape 0.44!!); e) write to the editor with a proposal for your article; f) gain approval and write your article; g) get it published, perhaps with some $$ in return. And h) let Inkscape know about your article, so we can link to it from our homepage! Bryce

I've been building inkscape from the svn sources weekly and about two weeks ago the perl option stopped working on my test system. I'm not really sure if it is a problem with inkscape or this system, a Gentoo Linux AMD64 box, so I didn't file a bug report. I was aware that the perl option was uselss and didn't do very much because the perl connects weren't there yet. Hey guys! I'm sorry, for being so stupid, but after Wolfi was to kind to help me out with my Debian problem, I had with Inkscape and that libgc1c2, I face the next problem -- again. I compiled the (almost) latest SVN and still don't have any icons. This problem was not solved in for me in the mean time, I just couldn't try to solve it anymore, because of the other problem... OS X Universal packages of Inkscape 0.44pre4

Hi all, Here's a first attempt at Universal packages of Inkscape 0.44pre4. It is basically a composition (using lipo) of the existing 0.44pre4 package with a Mactel compilation of 0.44pre4 from SVN. I have tested it on a MacBook Pro and PowerBook G4, both running OS X Tiger, and things seem to work fine. reproducable CRASH: Changing stroke on an image

Hey guys! Now that I finally can use Inkscape again, I found the first crash bug and would consider it a show stopper, if it still exists. Steps to reproduce: 1. Import an image as image and not pattern 2. Open fill and stroke dialogue 3. Switch to stroke style tab 4. CRASH There is not backtrace available, gdb just says "no stack" but the gdb output is attached. Take care! David

I submitted a patch the other day for this, but somehow it made it back into the tree. Selection.h has an over-specified method, which is ok in g++ 3.x, but breaks builds for 4.x. This really must not make it into any tarballs. Emergency save but file not present?

Hi, on IRC, we had two occurrences on the last two days where people had crashes with emergency save activated, but didn't have a saved file around. One of them was Thomas Vander Stichele (from Fluendo), and he is running 0.43 from Fedora Core 4, and the file has not been saved before. Is there something we can do to make that emergency save as bulletproof as possible? This is one of the worst bugs to have IMO. Of course, crashes should not happen in the first place, but if they happen... Cheers, Colin

0.44 plan of attack

Bug fixing energy seems to be dwindling. To me this means it is release time. I'd like to get input from others on a few topics. 1) Translation status. Translation is an eternal project. I don't know how to quantify what is good enough for release. Arpad, Matiphas, how are we doing? I think it is time to get serious about this hard freeze and turn to patches, but I want to make sure you are ready. 2) Quality assurance. I looked through the bug tracker. We have some new issues. The font selector crash [1501150] is easy to reproduce, but also quite easy to avoid. Jon was looking into [1501156] last I heard. I've been waiting to hear from bbyak about the snapping bugs [1429049]. I think we are going to hear about [1497837] libgc-6.7 a lot but there seems to be a solution. Are we release quality? If not, I think we are very close. What do others think? 3) Stable branch. We're switching things up a bit this time. We have had a slightly warmed over freeze. And we plan to maintain a stable branch for 0.44. Could we perhaps tie up loose ends and tighten down our committing habits tomorrow, Thursday June 8th? Then in the evening US Central time, I will branch 0.44 we can begin the absolute freeze on that branch, all fixes going into the tracker, and reopen HEAD for those eager to wreak havoc. If all goes well cut the release from the branch on Tuesday. Sound like a plan? Speak up now. :-) Aaron Spike

I just hit a short entry on the One Laptop Per Child's interface, and it's chat program. It uses Zeroconf and SVG! http://www.eschoolnews.com/eti/2006/05/001414.php Guess I've got to dust off my old Intel PC to try to get an VM running that now. Aside from other things, it might be very interesting to get interoperable with that. Perhaps even add that as a "target platform" for Inkscape drawing, etc. like SVG Tiny... Plus there's mention of a custom protocol. hmmm.....

Inkscape 0.44 Hard Freeze

Hi all, We have just this evening reached our bug fixing goal. There is one must-fix bug (see below) but I think it may be out of date anyway. Thus, tonight we are officially moving into Hard Freeze, the final phase in the release cycle before Inkscape 0.44 is released. >From this point until release, DO NOT COMMIT anything to SVN without approval from our Release Wardens (Jon Cruz and Aaron Spike). If you have bug fixes to contribute, please post them to the patch tracker and notify them. Jon and Aaron, you two now have absolute authority over the codebase between now and when 0.44.0 is tagged. Use this time to review the codebase for any last minute bugs, must-fix bugs that we've missed until now, or other flaws that should be fixed before release. When you feel things are ready, create the 0.44.0 tag. We will split into the stable 0.44 and development 0.45 branches at that point. I would encourage you two to try to complete the Hard Freeze within a week. Ideally, it should only take a few days to check and finalize everything, so that should be doable. If it looks like it'll take longer, let's discuss some alternate plans. Here is the status for the remaining bugs I know about: * We have just a single must-fix bug left (#1489175 "Win2K: Crash on Startup: entry point FreeAddrInfo not found"), however from the limited information on that bug, it sounds like it's probably out of date, so I'm not going to worry about it. You can take a look at it and decide what to do about it. #1489175 * There's some snapping bugs that haven't gotten attention, that you may want to review. They weren't included in the must-fix list due to lack of owner. #1488128 * We've gotten a bunch of reports from Debian Unstable users about Inkscape failing to run. This affects users of both old 0.43 and 0.44pre1. Dunno if this is a distro issue, or a gtk issue, or what, but probably needs more analysis. #1497837 * There are still some font issues related to the new font control. If you feel these have not been adequately addressed, consider disabling the font rendering in the font selector for this release, or other actions to hide the issue until post-release. #1494337 There's probably others, but you can decide the ones you care most about. Remember though, at this point the game is to minimize the impact of the bugs, rather than to see them fixed. This may mean hiding the symptoms (or trading them for more tolerable bugs), or simply list them as known issues, and put them on the must-fix list for 0.44.1. Bryce
