Hi all, I just committed LPE to trunk. I have chosen to put the necessary 2geom files into inkscape svn, and build them together with inkscape. Windows building works fine, and Linux aswell! :) One must download Boost, but it seems only 3 files are needed. concept_check.hpp, format.hpp and optional/optional.hpp. I think this means only the boost base is needed and the "optional" package. No harm downloading all though... http://www.boost.org/ (please note I did not test this, I downloaded the complete boost package) I updated the LPE build info on the wiki, if you have trouble building: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/LivePathEffects#BUILDING_THE_BRANCH Really hope I did not break building! Cheers, Johan Note 1.: There are some warnings on Linux, because of duplicate entries in the makefile. I do not know why 2geom is put twice in the makefile. Note 2.: I had to exclude extension/internal/bitmap/*.* in build.xml to get Inkscape built (trunk rev 15177, so without LPE changes)

Multithreading (with TBB)

Salutations! My name is Dennis Lin, and (until Friday) I'm an intern at Intel. As you may have heard, Intel has released a GPL version of Thread Building Blocks (http://osstbb.intel.com/). In an attempt to gain greater adoption, they have asked me to look into using it to thread existing open-source applications. I've played with the Inkscape source for the last couple of weeks, and I should have some patches soon. I'll try to put out a patch later today to avoid redrawing the entire screen when scrolling diagonally. (This should be independent of scrolling). Where do you prefer your patches? I also have some questions as to how I should proceed. I have found (the hard way) that nr-arena-shape is very *not* threadsafe. However, the Cairo version seems to be a lot better. Is the intent to move everything to Cario in the near future? (I probably don't have enough time remaining to do the conversion, but I might be able to get started, and I can continue on my "free time" after school starts again.) More generally, I have noticed that the sp-canvas and nr-arena-item seem to be scheduled for a rewrite. I have been trying to keep my changes relatively unintrusive, but I was wondering what direction I should be trying to nudge things. Finally, I would like to gauge the interest in this work. Tweak tool on straight lines: "feature" or "bug"

Hello all (and bulia in particular), I just discovered that the Tweak tool as no effect on straight lines (on the middle of straight lines to be exact, because it can move the end nodes). Even when there are nodes in the middle, passing the tweak tool avec a straight line does not deform it. Hi all, I uploaded another lib bundle. This one has the ImageMagick library. It is statically built to avoid the (IMHO) nasty DLL collection you would otherwise need to bundle with Inkscape. NEW: blur export fixed

I fixed several often-reported bugs of 0.45: * Exporting blurred objects to bitmap is now much faster. This was particularly slow in 0.45; some files could take hours to export. Now this is fixed, in part by the faster algorithm (contributed by Jasper soon after the 0.45 release) and in part by today's bugfix in the export code. Now even the quite complex files with large blurs export at high resolution in at most a few minutes. * The disappearing of blurred objects in exported bitmaps which happened for large objects in 0.45 is fixed. * The same fix got rid of the rendering artefacts that sometimes appeared on blurred objects during scrolling. While the fix is simple, it's in a sensitive area, so please test rendering and exporting your files with blur and report any problems to me at once! -- bulia byak Inkscape. Window title not consistent

When you open a document, the window title shows the filename exclusively, e.g. 'foo.svg' When you save a document, the window title shows the full path of the file, e.g. '/bar/foo.svg' I find this behaviour rather confusing and would suggest a more consistent window title. --------------------------------- Jetzt Mails schnell in einem Vorschaufenster überfliegen. Hey thanks for sorting that out bulia. About the enable preview text box: I'm not sure that I'm the best person to sort that out right now. You see right now I'm not really focussing on the GTK file dialogs. For Windows users I'm replacing them with Win32 native equivalents. My explorer thumbnail extension is making steady progress as well. I was really worred that the lack of ATL/WTL in MingW would be a big stumbling block. It turned out to be no problem in the end. The two problems I'm having are the slowness of compiling in Windows compared to Linux, as well as the problem of still (as far as I know) not being able to compile with btool in Vista - I have to work through VNC on a broken screened XP laptop lying under my desk! Inkscape performance

Hey all, So, with the last couple files I've worked on (my last hitting 23.5megs... note that I abuse clones ;)), Inkscape's performance seems to have tanked. Is this due to the nature of a "bloated" (not really bloated, but I used the term because it's human readable) format or a parsing issue or something else? I'm just curious if there's anything that could possibly be done to improve the performance. I know that I had files this complex in AI, and it could hang when the files got huge and I copied/pasted objects around. But it's even painful with stuff like pulling up the fill & stroke dialog for the first time in a session with one of these complex docs. It will take like 3-5 mins to unfreeze and show the dialog. Just figured I would ask. -Josh

Compile error in line-geometry.cpp with struct assignment for gcc 3.3

Hello, When I try to build svn 15634 using gcc 3.3 (OS X 10.3), I get a compile error: line-geometry.cpp: In member function `virtual NR::Maybe<NR::Point> Box3D::Line::intersect(const Box3D::Line&)': line-geometry.cpp:57: error: parse error before `;' token I was able to build 0.45.1 in this same environment, so this error is relatively new. The error seems to be caused when something is set to NR::Nothing. This example causes the same error: namespace NR { struct Nothing {}; }; void function() { void* junk = NR::Nothing; //<---- parse error } I played with this a bit, and found that the problem is not related to the namespace nor to the fact that the struct has no members. Does this sound familiar to anyone, or can anyone recommend a way (search terms) to find out more about this? Thanks!, John

Mingw-gcc 4.2.1

updating filters

hi, Nicholas! for some reason, some controls doesnt update automatically when applied to imported images. But they update on other kinds of objects. See for example, feColorMatrix. Juca PS: colormatrix values should be stored for each of the possible types. It is not good to store all of them in a single variable. It would be much better if the user could adjust the value for one type, then change type and readjust value, and then change its mind again (maybe feeling that the previous type and value were better) and when he selects back the previous type he should see the respective old value still there.

Scheme Scripting Console

We have developed a feature which allows Scheme Scripting from a console inside of Inkscape. We chose to implement a Scheme interpreter inside Inkscape because we felt higher-order programming and other functional paradigm ideas of Scheme would apply very nicely to a vector-based program such as Inkscape. The tar file included at the directory below contains a README with directions to aid in the process of installing the patch contained in the tar file. Hey, I don't know how many people saw this, but I thought it might be of general interest as it seems text is always an issue. Apparently there was a "text summit" in Glasgow as a part of aKademy. A report from the KDE folks: http://dot.kde.org/1186422013/ Which sounds interesting, but I hope we'll never have to directly deal with "languages not yet in Unicode." And, I think that Pango will do most of it for us. One of the links that I found interesting was to Fontima -- which is looking to define a font manager and widgets for the free desktop. Alt-mouse - an RFC

Okay, I've checked the source code out and had a quick look at it with an eye to doing something about the Alt-mouse issue on Linux. There are currently only 50 hardwired references to GDK_MOD1_MASK in the whole source tree (over 21 .ccp and .h files). Two options spring to mind: 1 Define a new global, ALT_KEY_MASK (say) and default it at run-time to the value of GDK_MOD1_MASK unless the user sets it to another value in their shortcut file, then do a simple search and replace for all occurances of GDK_MOD1_MASK. This would mean that the user's choice to treat something else as Alt (presumably Meta) would be global and not only for the mouse combinations. This would at least be consistant for that user and also for developers who would simply use the new global ALT_KEY_MASK everywhere they would previously have used GDK_MOD1_MASK. 2 Alternatively we could be more selective about the replacement so that only mouse combinations would be affected. This would mean that developers working on items not involved in the question of Alt+mouse need never bother about it but it would mean that a user who opted to change the Alt key would be faced with some functions where it was still Alt and others where it was now whatever they had picked instead. There's also the issue of the hint text. In the former case there is some justification for not altering it and just letting a user who's made the decision to change live with the fact that the hint text still says "Alt", but in the second case the functions modified would really have to be changed (and changed back if they undo the key mapping). At the moment I'm enjoying being able to easily use node sculpting using Meta-mouse and am very happy to continue on to impliment option 1 but obviously it affects more files which might make others unhappy. This would shift the responsibility for how to cope with the mouse squarly onto the user's shoulders. S/he would have the option to stick with the "official" shortcuts and modify their WM or to consciously select a different keyboard mod value. Developers can then forget about the issue. Now the caveat: I'm not a C++ programmer, although I've been programming for 29 years so I'm not a newbie. Be that as it may, I might be totally misunderstanding how deeply this change would affect the project so more experienced heads need to tell me if I'm barking up the wrong tree before I start chopping it down. Help with makefile troubles

Hello 'scapers, I have been fiddling with a problem way too long now, I am hoping one of you can help. :-( I want to get a local copy of 2geom in the inkscape directory, and use that to build. This is now committed to the live-path-effects branch. It builds fine on windows, however I cannot get it to build on Linux. The 2geom directory is compiled (I see .o files) and the library is also created ('lib2geom.a'). But... for some reason, the linker cannot locate some 2geom symbols. For example I get the build error: /home/johan/inkscapelpe/src/./2geom/path.h:344: undefined reference to `Geom::Path::delete_range(__gnu_cxx::__normal_iterator<Geom::Curve**, std::vector<Geom::Curve*, std::allocator<Geom::Curve*> > >, __gnu_cxx::__normal_iterator<Geom::Curve**, std::vector<Geom::Curve*, std::allocator<Geom::Curve*> > >)' When I run: nm ./src/2geom/lib2geom.a -C -g --defined-only I do get : 00000150 T Geom::Path::delete_range(__gnu_cxx::__normal_iterator<Geom::Curve**, std::vector<Geom::Curve*, std::allocator<Geom::Curve*> > >, __gnu_cxx::__normal_iterator<Geom::Curve**, std::vector<Geom::Curve*, std::allocator<Geom::Curve*> > >) The link command = g++ -Wall -Wformat-security -W -Wpointer-arith -Wcast-align -Wsign-compare -Woverloaded-virtual -Wswitch -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -Wno-unused-parameter -g -O2 -o inkscape --export-dynamic main.o libinkpre.a 2geom/lib2geom.a application/libinkapp.a ui/dialog/libuidialog.a .... etcetera So it includes the lib with the symbol in it. Still it gives that error. Possible pointer to a solution: for some reason, 2geom is mentioned twice in /src/Makefile causing some warnings about overriding the old commands. I do not see why 2geom is put twice into this file. Could someone please have a look at building my branch on Linux? Thank you very very much, Johan

Tweak Tool

Bulia, As always, there was silence before the storm. ;-) Great new tool! I have a couple Qs. 1) Do you have plans for pressure/tilt support? If not, would you be opposed to toggles like the calligraphy tool? I know that I would personally find it to be greatly useful to have that interaction. 2) Are there plans for any other modes currently? If not, is there opposition to others adding them? I'm just thinking along the lines of a couple of the tools AI has, such as the twirl one. And, also as always... once I have more than a quick demo session to go on, more praise will follow. :-) -Josh

I am not sure whether I am dealing with the in and out buffers the proper way. The problem is that I need to handle buffers with different sizes. filters UI

The number of supported filters grows with every day, and I think we should rethink the UI a bit. The filters dialog developed by Nick is great and powerful, and of course must be there for those who know SVG and are comfortable with all the parameters. But for the rest of us, there must be a simpler way to access the filters. So far such a "simpler way" only exists for blur and blend modes, in the Fill and Stroke dialog. But of course we can't cram all filters there, nor do we need to, because most others are more obscure and less useful. So, what if we just add a whole new menu for SVG filters that would largely contain a list of preconfigured filters that can be applied by a single verb (command), without any setup dialog. These presets may include single filters with some meaningful parameters (perhaps depending on the selected object's properties in some way), perhaps even several different presets for a filter (e.g. Sharpen, Sharpen more, Sharpen a lot etc). Other presets may be often-used combinations of filters, such as Drop shadow. Each such command adds its filter(s) to the top of the filter stack on selected objects. This way the most common filters can be accessed quickly, and users will even be able to assign keyboard shortcuts to them. Apart from the presets, the menu would have commands "Remove last filter," "Remove all filters," and of course the command to open Nick's filters dialog which is where the parameters of the added filters can be adjusted if needed. Additions to node creation

Hi, These are features I've been wanting since I've switched from Illustrator. I call this feature set "non-linear node creation". Here they are: - Ctrl-click on nodes and node handles like in editing to change the node type - Moving nodes and node handles after they've been created - Moving nodes while click-creating new nodes. Explanation: When you click to make a node and drag the handles, you would press a key to drag the node center. This is behaviour copied from Illustrator's If it might accommodate any of you, I'd be ready to give a small bounty for it I was thinking about something like 50 - 70 euros. Don't know if it's realistic -- I'm probably gonna pass as a tightwad but that's all I can manage right now. Any suggestion, comments, just reply on the list. Thanks! Pierre-Luc

Bug in node editing

TinyScheme and GIMP

Hello, On the Inkscape project we received a patch from the folks at Glimmer labs which adds Scheme functionality. It uses the TinyScheme interpreter which looks like it's also being used by GIMP. From what I can tell, it seems that GIMP is including TinyScheme in the source tree. Is that your long term plan? Do you expect TinyScheme to be an external library at some point? If we were using it in Inkscape also, would that change the answer? Is your TinyScheme patched for UTF-8? Thanks, Ted

Window Manager Modifiers

Hello all, In the Inkscape project we're constantly butting up against the problem where there simply aren't enough modifiers for everything we'd like to implement. This means for most of our tools there is a constant battle to figure out how we can fit everything into Alt, Ctrl and Shift. We manage. But, many window managers are using alt click to drag windows which takes 1/3 of our options away. There are lots of solutions to this, I'm curious which way makes sense to people. - Applications could start using the "Meta" key. I don't like this because it seems to be something that is rather machine specific. I don't think applications should be using this modifier. - There is some Freedesktop spec that says Window Managers should only use the meta modifier for their actions. - Somewhere there is a spec that allows a window manager hint to be set by applications to say "I'd really like Alt, please!!!" - Some users don't get functionality out of some apps unless they reconfigure the apps or their desktop. My personal favorite here is "2" -- I think that the Meta key could be turned into the "desktop" key where other desktop actions could be assigned to it also. --Ted

Adding more tags to svg files

Howdy, A bit of fiddling leads me to believe that it's ok to add tags to Inkscape's top level <svg> tag. Inkscape seems to assign them an id and then ignore them. Is this correct? Is there danger of other svg applications discarding unknown tags, or Inkscape doing this in the future? Thanks, Kent

referencing elements within an external SVG

New drawing tool idea

I posted this to the inkscape-users list and was suggested to post it here. So here it is, please tell me what you guys think: -------------------- Hello, For the past month I have been thinking over an idea I would really like to see made in an opensource vector program. Inkscape is my favorite so I'm posting this here. I think this would be a really great tool but would also take quit a bit of work (or at least I think it would, feel free to prove me wrong.) What I want: The tool is somewhat of a line tool. Similar to the freehand tool in that it creates a vector line, but enhanced. The differences would rest on the that is drawn. Instead of the curves that the freehand tool draws, the line would be composed of joints evenly spaced apart (the spacing would in general be small, but be user customizable). Each joint should have their x,y cords as well as a width property (it may be better to organize that different, but each joint needs to have this property, which would be a variable number set by a stylus used to display the line, I'll get to this in a moment). In addition a joint must be able to reside in multiple lines. The reason being so that two lines can "connect" to each other. Each line would simple be a stroke; the button clicks, the mouse moves, the button lets up - a line. So say you draw a line in the shape of a big C. Then you want to join the open end and have tails sticking out on ether end. You would start above the C shape on the rightmost side and draw your line down. As you draw you can hold down on CTRL to connect the line to any other you pass over (Or maybe have it so after you draw the line you can press a hotkey and it connects itself to any other lines it intersects with). That's all for the user drawing the lines, now for how it would display it. I'm not totally sure about how to do this (as if I am on any of this) but I was thinking it should draw out to look like a pen or pencil stroke (maybe have the general width be user defined so it could look big and fat to like a brush stroke). This is what I was wanting the width attr in the joint for. Maybe for displaying it create a line (or rather a complex polygon shaped like a line) that moves through all the points with the width (distance between the two edges on the sides of the line) changing with the width attr in the joints. Did any of that make sense? Ok, two more things. Coloring and editing. For editing I want something cool :) What I was thinking was that you can press down on CTRL or right click or something near a line and start drawing. As you go it moves and morphs the line to how you are drawing. It would have to automatically add and remove joints to keep evenly spaced. Is that at all clear? Lastly the coloring. I don't know how this could be made into inkscape easily (not that any of this would be easy) but I would want the ability to be able to fill in enclosures in the lines (also be able to change the color of a line but that wouldn't be difficult.) I could only really think of one way to do this. It would find all the joints of the lines that it needs to fill in and create a polygon from them (the joints). Perhaps have them be the actual joint objects (is this very feasible in C/C++?) so that when a line is moved after it is filled in the fill would update with it. Anyway, that is what I would really like to see in a vector editor like inkscape (I would love to see it in inkscape.) There are probably still several design holes that I overlooked but I think I conveyed what is in my mind. This would take a lot of work but I think it would be a very valuable tool to have. I tired playing around with it myself using cairo and PyGTK but wasn't able to get very far (I need to learn to stay as far away from the DrawingArea and Pixbuf/Pixmap as possible... ether that or get it figured out once and forall). If anyone thinks this would be cool and might want to implement it that would be awesome! At the moment I couldn't really fund anyone to do this and I'm not even sure this is something that would be wanted in inkscape. Error compiling

filter UI (convolve matrix)

Here are some considerations about the convolve matrix ui current implementation: (1) I think that the rows and cols parameters dont need a scroll bar since they are integer values selectable within a very small range. The scroll bar is only wasting space there since its even easiear to select the desired value directly typing it or by using the up or dow arrows. (2) I have drawn a spline and have imported a bitmap. I have applied the same filter to both (convolve matrix) when I change the divisor or the bias parameters, the effect on the spline updates automaticaly while I scroll the bar, but on the image I MUST double click on the filter name to have the effect aplied. It is a weird behaviour I think. Do you know why is it happenning? (3) the bias and divisor scroll bars bypass the default value behaviour (which could be desired in some ocasions, mainly because the default value seems to be usually a good choice aesteticaly) Maybe a good soulition woul be to initialize it with the default value, not zero. Also it limits the range of possible values. (4) how do we set the targetX and targetY? Maybe we could have a little black dot indicating it on the matrix And one desired feature for the filters ui in general: (5) it would be nice if we coul drag and drop a filter from the left list into the filter diagram area at the right in order to use it as if it was a filter primitive. In the UI it would show the filter name (it's an abstraction to the user) but behind the scenes it would probably be a copy of the filter structure connected to the rest of the real primitives implementing a "higher level" filter. Spam in our sourceforge forums

Hi, There's still a lot of spam being posted into the "installation help" forum. About 5 a day, with currently only one real post in the last month. That's a bit skewed... I guess people are being scared away when they see the first 10 messages of so being spam (I don't come over everyday to clean up the mess). Maybe we could try to block anonymous posts for a few weeks, and then unblock them again. There's a slight chance that the spammer (it's apparently only a single #%$#@) might notice and stop bugging us. This will also shy away real people (as opposed to the spam bots), but it's not being used anyhow at the moment. The "manual" forum already has anonymous posts blocked, but the others haven't. I'm trying to have as little options as possible because the snapping dialog can easily get too confusing. All the tiny detailed options are there under the hood, but I think only some subset should be provided to the user. For example, in the object snapper we currently only snap boundingbox corners to other bounding boxes, and nodes to other nodes or paths. There's no mixing of those any longer (i.e. no nodes to bboxes), which makes snapping much more intuitive. Does anyone have any objections to this behaviour? I like the idea of only snapping to nodes at sharp corners.We will still need an option to disable snapping to nodes, as someone might want to snap to any point along a path, also to any point close to a sharp node. It would be annoying if it snaps to the node when you get close to it, so this doesn't help in reducing the snapping dialog clutter. But I think I might filter out the smooth nodes anyway, merely for improving the snapping responsiveness. Diederik

Change in object snap behavior

I noticed that in SVN the object/node snap behavior is different from that in 0.45. In 0.45 if I had a polyline then I would only get snapping to the nodes, not to other parts of the line. In 0.46 it is equally happy to snap to any part of the line, making it difficult to snap to the corner vertex. I can understand there's no particular reason to preferentially snap to a smooth node on a path, but for corner nodes I think you should get snapping behavior that somehow takes precedent over the line-snapping behavior. --bb

coloured markers

one friend asked me if it is possible to have start, middle and end markers coloured. The UI aparently only allows black markers. Then I looked at the svg xml and noticed that markers declarations are quite flexible. Is it only my impression, or we can indeed use as markers absolutly anything that is valid svg ? I would propose that a color-selection button is placed to the right of each of the marker combo-boxes. (maybe even 2: one for marker-fill and one for marker-stroke) Juca

Well, I still may not have made your work obselete. After all, all I've done is replace the GtkWindow* of SPDesktop::window with Gtk::Window*. It was a relatively simple fix to go through all the dependancies and change all those. For proper Gtkmmification, SPDesktop should probably be turned from a struct to a class, retagged "Inkscape::UI::Desktop" (or something), and derrived from Gtk::Window. This would be a proper job of it. new ways to scroll and zoom

I know adding prefs settings for individual shortcuts is evil, but since we don't yet have a UI for editing keymaps, and these features were requested A LOT, I think in this case it's justified: * You can now enable Space+mouse drag to pan canvas, as it does in Adobe Illustrator. This mode is enabled by the "Left mouse button pans when Space is pressed" checkbox in the Scrolling tab of the Inksape Preferences dialog. By default it is off and pressing the spacebar key switches you to Selector and back, as it always did in Inkscape. * By default, rotating the mouse wheel scrolls the canvas vertically and Ctrl+wheel zooms in and out. Now, if you turn on the "Mouse wheel zooms by default" checkbox in the Scrolling tab of the Inksape Preferences dialog, this behavior is reversed: mouse wheel zooms without Ctrl and scrolls with Ctrl. This new mode should be familiar for users of AutoCAD and CorelDraw. * In the Zoom tool, right mouse button always zooms out instead of calling the context menu (which is rather useless in this tool anyway). -- bulia byak Inkscape. Gtkmmifying the desktop window object

Hi All, As we discussed a few weeks ago, I've now gtkmmified the desktop window object. I've also set this object to be parent windows of the file dialogs, which prevents them falling underneath the application window in Windows as per bug #1431528. I've spent quite a long time testing this modification, both in Ubuntu, XP and in Vista, and everything seems ok. Nonetheless, this sort of modification is could create bugs, especially with all the pointer casting which goes on in Inkscape. So let me know if there are any problems. In working on this I may have stumbled across another bug which has crept in from somehwhere: In Windows, try saving a file through the file dialog. At this point the application crashes. You can see this happen if you download Inkscape0707240355.7z (which comes from a few days ago before I comitted this latest mod, so it's not my fault). I used message boxes to trace the problem to line 644 of file.cpp: "delete saveDialog;". However when I compiled this morning, and stepped through with a debugger I could find no problem - so it remains an enigma for now. Win32 build error w/ pdf-input

I'm getting a build error on a fresh update from SVN. The errors start off with: Make error line 179: problem compiling: src/extension/internal/pdfinput/pdf- input.cpp:19:27: error: goo/GooString.h: No such file or directory And snowball from there. Since it's an extension I presume I could just exclude it from the build and be fine, but I'm not sure how to do that with the btool.exe thing. Thanks, --bb

Lighting Effects in Inkscape

Hi, It's been a long time since I started using Inkscape. During the last two weeks, I got frustrated that lighting effects weren't implemented in Inkscape. I took advantage of Niko Kiirala great filter framework to write a first simple implementation of these lighting effects. Almost everything is implemented now. (kernelUnitsLength support is still missing but I plan to get it done soon). I write this email to the list to signal a discreprancy I noticed while implementing feSpecularLighting. In fact the svg feSpecularLighting specification, and test examples, do not follow Phong lighting model. In the SVG specs, the specular lighting is computed by taking ks * N.H^speExp In every Phong lighting model I found by googling it is computed as ks * R.E^speExp where ks is the specular constant speExp is the specular exponent N is the surface normal vector L is the light vector, unit vector from the surface point to the light E is the eye vector, unit vector from the surface to the viewer R is the reflected light vector, unit vector from the surface point indicating the reflection direction. H is the normalized vector colinear to L+E/2 writing things down we have N.H = cos (alpha) for some alpha and R.E = cos(2*alpha). The formula using R.E seems much more natural since the viewer sees reflection if R is "close" to E, ie R.E is close to 1. For the time being the N.H is implemented in Inkscape (standard compliance above all). However, can anybody explain the formula using N.H? Does anybody know why svg specularLighting uses N.H instead of R.E? Cheers, Jean-Rene

Hi, after building the latest inkscape svn version, the exec I obtained kept crashing. After some tests I solved the problem. Inkscape wasn't able to find the key binding file. I just looked into the bugtracker. This bug was already reported and the bug report was closed. ([ 1653629 ] 0.45 from source in ubuntu). http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1653629&group_id=9… Shouldn't inkscape die in a nicer way than a segfault, with an explicit warning, if the key file cannot be found? GTK+ the cause of Wacom issues in Windows XP SP2?

I'm new to mailing lists so figure me if they follow a specific format. Basically, I've ran across posts in the GIMP newsgroup (comp.graphics.apps.gimp): http://groups.google.com/group/comp.graphics.apps.gimp/browse_thread/thread… http://groups.google.com/group/comp.graphics.apps.gimp/browse_thread/thread… I remember myself specifically asking in that group if Wacom tablets had known usability in The GIMP: http://groups.google.com/group/comp.graphics.apps.gimp/browse_thread/thread… Then I posted this, somewhat desperate for any responses: http://groups.google.com/group/comp.graphics.apps.gimp/browse_thread/thread… ...and also recently on InkscapeForum.com I posted a thread: http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=135&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a ...they all related to GTK+ possibly being the culprit, at least that is what conclusion I came to. Anyway, I seem to have problems mostly when using the Pencil tool, Bezier, and Calligraphy tool. Mostly, as in 95% of the time, it is the Pencil tool. I can draw and draw and sometimes, the tool just stops responding (the cursor hangs) until I lift the Stylus and then put it back to the Tablet. Even then, sometimes I have to do it *several* times before it will respond. Then there are some times when I have no problem. Or one jerky movement, lift the Stylus and everything works fine again. I simply cannot reproduce it consistently. Anyway, the kind, and somewhat more experienced than myself administrator of InkscapeForum.com suggested I send you guys/gals an e-mail. My setup is Windows XP SP2, with a Graphire4 4x5. Do I need to provide more information? Any ideas on what the culprit may be? Is it GTK+? Is it something else? displacementmap renderer bug

SVG spec (http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/filters.html#feDisplacementMap) states that pixel values must be alpha-demultiplied before processing this filter operation. Inkscape 0.46 release?

Hi all, It's been a while since our 0.45.1 release, and a ton of good new features have been added in. However, in recent months many of us have busy with new jobs, school, conferences, etc. However with summer here I'd like to hear if there is interest in seeing 0.46 released? Ubuntu's next feature freeze is August 16th, one month from now. I would love to see Inkscape 0.46 ready for inclusion there, and would be able to pitch in help if others are also interested in getting an Inkscape release out in that timeframe. What do you think? 3 more attention-to-detail observations

Hi Everyone, 3 questions about the inkscape UI. The first relates to Windows users only: why is it that the menu item icons are shrunk slightly? I get the impression that GTK has taken the Windows system item height (which is good), then squished the menu bitmaps into that height (which is bad). The the MS Office applications got around this problem by simply increasing the height of each item so as to accomodate the icon. Is it possible to do this with GTK?, because right now the icons look more like a mush than attractive decoration. (BTW: Roll on the Tango icons) Second observation: It seems to me that "Vacuum Defs" is a bit of an unfortunate title for this menu item, in that from reading it, even an experianced user such as myself struggles to comprehend what it might actually do. Is this the best title? I've never seen another menu item ever with the word "Vacuum" in it; it's not a well understood UI term. And most users aren't going to know what a "def" is either. Third observation: in XP/Vista in the development builds (but not in 0.45.1), there's some wierd toolbar behaviour at the moment, as you'll see in this screenshot: http://www.airwebreathe.org.uk/toolbar.png. In both XP and Vista, when the mouse hovers over the chevron at the end of the toolbar you get a wierd double bevel effect. Can this be sorted out? Also in the Vista screenshot you may notice that the toolbar gradient doesn't line up with the toolbar frame properly. Any comments?

Committing LivePathEffects to trunk

Hello all, I want to get LivePathEffects (LPE) into trunk soon. The benefit of having my own branch (i.e. few people build it, so highly unstable code is no prob ;-) ; thanks for testing guys!!!) is starting to become a drawback (i.e. I'd like people to use it and report bugs/problems/RFE's) There is a problem though: Dependencies. LPE needs lib2geom (this is a *good* thing!), which needs Boost. 1. I don't think Boost is going to be a big problem. Well... it is big, but 2geom does not use that many headers; i have to check but only a small part of boost is necessary i think. 2. lib2geom does not have an official release and LPE uses the latest SVN version. Development is very active, often providing new features InkscapeLPE wants. This basically means that to build LPE, one first must svn up 2geom and make install it. A. What are your thoughts on the dependency issues? B. Now I think of it, I think the file-format extension introduced by LPE must be agreed upon as well. Regarding selection and the filter dialog, how about the following setup: the dialog will still display all filters, but the user can set which filter is currently applied to the selected object(s) by double clicking a filter in the left-hand list. The active filter will get a dot or a small icon to show it is being used on the selection. Single-clicking a filter will select it for editing of its primitives/attributes, but won't apply it to the selection. How's this sound? If it's OK, it shouldn't take too long to do. Hi folks, I'm would like to provide a choice for psTricks export to export text as text (not paths). My problems are that I can't get the position of the text within: PrintLatex::text(Inkscape::Extension::Print *mod, char const *text,NR::Point p, SPStyle const *const style) 'p' looks like it should contain this information (ie. p[NR::X]) but it contains the value 0. Further up, 'latex-pstricks-out.cpp' is making a call to: sp_item_invoke_print (mod->base, &context); where Inkscape::Extension::Print = *mod; mod->base = SP_ITEM (sp_document_root (doc)); ...so; any thoughts appreciated! r,

Can we start a new page at the wiki to map our current efforts on the filter effects development? It would list for each filter, who has already done what an which problems have emerged. Hi everyone, I just wanted to clarify what exactly the problem described in this bug is: 904962 (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=904962&group_id=93…) At first it sounds as though fonts are actually not showing up at all for some platforms, but I'm wondering if the problem now is simply that the UI doesn't separate font family and variants beyond what CSS allows (so no small caps, outline, swoosh, etc). feImage filter

I have been working on feDisplacementMap but I havent figured out a way to test my first drafts of code since the displacementmap test on the SVG 1,1 full test suite also depends on feImage. That sucks! So, I stopped working on fedisplacementmap and started to implement feImage. The specs say that feImage should behave similarly to the image element. So, I imagine that it may be possible to not duplicate code. But I tryied to look at sp-image.cppand I dont know exactly how to reuse it. Could anybody help on this? Juca

Hi, Is anyone actually working on fixing the font problems (ie, no styles except the very basic ones)? This is a total show-stopper for professional use. If no one is working on it, is there a guide to how to start on working with the Inkscape code, submitting patches etcetera? I'm not sure that I'll have much time to work on it but I am a programmer and I have worked with Linux fonts quite a lot over the years. I really like Inkscape and use it for design work (real, paid design work) quite a lot but it always hits a wall when a client is already using use a font which Inkscape can't handle but has to be incorporated, like Helvetica Black, which happened yesterday. There is almost nothing else which causes me to have to revert to Illustrator now other than font handling and I'm starting to really resent Illustrator because of it. Thomas Worthington

Reading the SVG specs, I see that there is a big chunk of C code in the feTurbulence filter effect spec. What is the copyright status of this piece of code? Is it public domain? After all, it is inside the specs, would them sue us if we copy&paste it? I agree that the user should be in control of exactly which instance of a filter he is editing - he might have a blurred object that is then composited which he wants to again blur after the composite. There is no way you can code the dialog to determine what instance of the filter he intends to adjust. I'm not familiar with the current implementation, so please pardon my ignorance. However, I think it is necessary to have a list of filters on a pane of the dialog (much like the layers dialog) in order of implementation for the object/group which can easily be chosen for editing. They could then be named (?) and kept track of that way if so desired. It's a familiar method already, and seems to me the most intuitive way to control the filters. Of course, then you might even have some sort of indication (maybe an icon) of what filters are affecting the object, but which are applied to a different subset of objects (group), which could then be chosen and edited. It might be fairly complex, but something like this: choose the filter, a dialog asks if you want to switch the selection to the group affected by the filter (if it's different from the current selection). Make sense? It does to me, but I'm the one thinking it...

For example, you can see that now inkscape renders correctly the 4th test in the SVG1.1 test suite. latex+pstricks export: bug and requests of dev

Hello, This export possibility is brilliant. I think there's a bug in the handling of stroke colour (or width) for paths: saving as latex+pstricks a path with no stroke (but a fill colour) gives a path with a stroke in the tex file. Also, there's no dialog offering *not to* save text as curves, as is the case with the postscript export. This is a pity, since one could then include latex commands in the text (as is possible with xfig). One could always explicitely convert (some of) the text to paths in order to prevent it from being interpreted by latex. As well, keeping track of the labels in the saved tex file would help. They could even be included as PStricks "nodes", so additional pstricks commands could be added in the latex document (such as an arrow between an element of the drawing and an element of the latex document it's included in). Anyway, thanks a lot for this brilliant tool! I'm using Inkscape as well for fun as for work (scientific sketches), and it's great. Resizable 3D boxes

Hi everyone! Good news! 3D box coding finally has had a new visible effect: Boxes are now resizable 'in perspective'. The current version by default provides three handles for each box, two on the front face (which we consider lying in XY plane) and one on the rear face (for the Z direcion). (As a sidenote, observe that the labelling of the Y and Z axis has been changed compared to the last version.) The first two handles can be used to arbitrarily resize the box inside the XY-plane, the third one obviously resizes it in the direction of the Z axis. When Shift is being pressed, the movement temporarily becomes constrained to a single axis for the first two handles and switches to occuring inside the XY plane for the third handle. (Try it, this is more intuitive than it sounds.) However, this is only one of many possible scenarios. As an alternative, I have implemented a second variant where the box has four handles and all but the circle-shaped one (which acts as a kind of 'master handle') use constrained dragging by default. It is possible to switch between these two variants using the corresponding toggle buttons in the 3D box toolbar showing three/four knots, respectively. These buttons are for convenience only and will disappear once the definitive behaviour is settled. I would very much appreciate your feedback what kind of behaviour you consider most intuitive. This could certainly also be a mixture of the two, or there could be a different number of handles, or they could be at different corners, or ... Tell me what you think is most natural. (It probably depends on the perspective, too; try toggling the states of the vanishing points from infinite to finite using the corresponding buttons and see whether this makes a difference). BTW, the 3D box tool now has the shortcuts Shift-F4 and X so that it's not necessary to manually change line #143 in widgets/toolbox.cpp to unhide the toolbox icon. In case you are wondering why this new feature has taken so long since my last email: I have constantly been refactoring the code under the hood because it was extremely cumbersome at that time, making expansion and implementation of new features rather difficult. But I believe that the current internal representation is sufficiently elegant and generic so that further development should be much quicker (and with a lot more visible effects anyway). Next I am going to attack the style issues Bulia mentioned in one of his last emails (sorry that this has lied idle in the meantime). Alternatively, I could implement draggable vanishing points first. Bulia, what do you think is more important? Hi all, I'm having Richard and mental review a patch with most of the tref stuff implemented. There are some small issues with it still and I will be fixing those issues, but I'd like to get the bulk of it versioned in the meantime. With this submission, you can open a document with a tref and see the content get updated when the source is modified. Also, I wanted to get a clear consensus on what I should work on next. bulia mentioned that the CSS stuff would be good (bulia, can you remind everything precisely what you were referring to when you mentioned that so we are all clear?). Also keep in mind that I intend to stick around (though probably not as frequently) after the official program ends. So hopefully we'll see text improve more and more over the next year! Finally, look for a blog post that summarizes my feelings on the program so far. You may find it interesting given that this is my first experience with open source. Gail

Changed bitmap handling

Hello all, As you guys are aware Chris is working on putting some bitmap editing tools into Inkscape for is GSoC project. There's a couple things that are difficult on the user interaction front that I wanted to bring up and see what people think. Basically, there are two types of images: embedded and linked. There is two types of linked images that are read-only and ones that we can write. So what should happen when someone does a bitmap operation on these types of image? How should undo/redo be handled? I'm leaning towards saying "always embed" at this point. It's simpler and probably does something similar to what most people want anyway. We don't need file dialogs or temporary files. What does everyone think about this? Chris, did I state the problem correctly? --Ted

Probelm with PDF import / PNG export

Hi, I'm sending these PDF, SVG and PNG files to report a strange behaviour with the PDF import in Inkscape. The following applies to Inkscape0707150130 on Windows XP SP2 The attached file: It is a PDF-X1a 2003 (full cmyk, PDF1.4 compatible) it is the PDF specification that is the most simple and standard for offset printing. No layers, no spot colors, etc... This PDF has been produced by Illustrator CS2. The problems: - The PNG export: the PNG exported from the attached PDF is horizontally mirrored and cutted (see attached PNGs). G9.png was exported with "export selected objects" right after the importing of the PDF. G10.png was exported with "export selected objects" after I moved the logo to the center of the A4 page. LOGOdusicacouture.svg is the SVG saved by Inkscape right after opening the PDF. Looks like there is a mirroring that occurs when saving/exporting from this file, even if the PDF itself shows properly in Inkscape (see attached screenshot screenshotPDFopen.png) - color: When importing this PDF, the color is wrong. The original color (which renders the same in Illustrator, Corel Draw, Photoshop (when rasterized), Indesign) is C44 M58 Y86 K35. Inkscape shows C00 M27 Y61 K60 (alpha 100%). Also, I'd like to help testing more toroughly the PDF import feature. I have tons of PDFs created by a bunch of different programs and I can even create required PDFs (PDF-X3, PDF-X1a:2003 and others) from different applications. Hi guys, I've submitted some patches to add support to export to OCAL feature patch over WebDav today. It's working fine for me. So, if someone could review this code, I will be grateful. Thanks to Jon and Ted, it's using gnome-vfs library. The neon library dependency was avoid =) Rigth now, it's impossible to interface with ccHost over WebDav, but I'm working on it. Poppler on win32

John Cliff helped me get his build of Poppler in win32 into the library bundle. http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32libs/gtk210-070715.7z I tweaked init.cpp and build.xml to use it. The latest build today should have it. Builds after 070715: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32 It is building right now, so I don't know the time yet. It looks like it does definitely import simple PDF's. From what I've seen, it imports curves (to be expected :) but no images or fonts yet. Good start. bob

OK, I figured this out. By default poppler does not install all the headers. 3d buttons with Inkscape

The filter inkscape developers have done nice work. With the current SVN version it is possible to make a shape looking like a button (see attachments). I noticed several things by testing it: - Adding a feOffset let Inkscape crash - There is no GUI, for setting the attribute in2 of feComposite to SourceGraphic if you don't count the XML editor. - The Grahpic looks similar but not equal on Firefox 3.0a6. The Graphic produced by Inkscape graphic is darker. The question is: Is it a bug in Firefox or Inkscape? Opera 9.20 display the Grahpic without the filter effect.

Hi, When you call a dialog of the last used extension, change or don't change settings and click "Cancel", extension still runs and produces output. Reproducible at least with Spirograph, Gear, L-Systems, Graph Plotter. By the way, do we want to bind some keyboard shortcut to "Previous Effect Settings..."? Alexandre

unset stroke, clone and stroke width

Hello all, I remarked a behavior that I find counter intuitive when dealing with clones. It also seems to me like it is just a bug in Inkscape's UI and that the underlying SVG rendering is correct. When cloning an object, the properties of the clones (color, opacity etc.) can be edited only if they are "unset" in the original object. Therefore, I expect that when I unset stroke on the original object I should be able to edit all aspects of the stroke of its clone(s). While this is true for color, this is not true for stroke width, line cap style, opacity and all other properties. However if I manually edit the original objects properties and remove its stroke width, line cap, opacity etc. attributes, it is possible to change them in the clone and Inkscape displays it fine (apart from markers that are not retained). I have done a file in which the behavior is showed for all attributes I could think of: http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/inkscape/test_unset_stroke.svg So I think that when unsetting stroke, all stroke attributes should be removed, not only color. Exporting svg into png.

Hi. Maybe it isn't bug or it is allready solved but I have problem when exporting svg into png. When I export my logo or any artwork with blur effect it cut it. For example i made circle with blured border (or stroke) and I export it to png but after export i see cuted blur to non blured stroke. I need to make four aditional shapes arrange them so my circle is in the center, export them and then cut my circle in gimp. I would like to see in next release a support for exporting blured shapes without cuting them.

Changes in building

Just wondering if there have been any recent changes in the way Inkscape is built, particularly in Windows. For some odd reason, Eclipse CDT suddenly thinks that Inkscape.exe is not a recognized executable when it comes to debugging. It was fine for many weeks before this one. Since everyone else seems to be having success with the PDF import, and since poppler is a C++ library, it seems possible that the heap corruption is the result of a C++ ABI mismatch between the build of poppler you have installed and the version of g++ you are compiling Inkscape with. Could you try installing a recompiled poppler and see if that makes a difference? -mental

Ted, Yesterday for the first time I tried live-update effect on a large slow document (about 1Mb with lots of blur etc). It was a torture. I could not even adjust the number of paragraphs because it froze on every change for a long time. You made the effects themselves asynchronous - that is nice. But in situations like this, the actual effect run takes only a small fraction of the total time; a lot more time is spent by Inkscape itself on saving and then reloading the large file. And since Inkscape itself is not asynchronous at all, this freezes everything including the effect dialog. Async script extensions

Hey all, So I've finally got my work on switching the scripting extensions over to being a call with parameters instead of a parsed string on the command line. At the same time I've made them asynchronous, which has some nice side effects. Basically, this all involved reworking large portions of the scripting code -- which brings the possibility of breaking things. Two areas in specific that I'm worried about: -- win32. Some of the functions I've used had notes on what does and doesn't work on win32, but the documentation was sparse, and I'm concerned it was incomplete. -- internationalization. I know we've had problems in the past with this code and different locales of filesystem and UI. I believe I kept all that code in place -- but history means that those with the complex setups should be extra observant when noticing how their SVN builds run. So other than those concerns, enjoy everyone. I hope this will add a lot of usability to the scripts, especially some discoverability to the parameters. Have fun, Ted

Hi, A question in a design forum on drawing exact logariphmic spirals in One Well Known Application :-) triggered my interest to a way doing same thing in Inkscape. In fact Inkscape operates in other terms than all the geometric sources I read so far overnight. Divergence (or Linearity) sounds very much like Ratio, but 1,618 simply won't work for any amount Turns I've tried :) Apparently , if I divide Turns by 0,618 and input the result into Divergence, the resulted spiral will look pretty close to a Fibonacci spiral, but not exactly it. This brings me to a point we I don't quite understand what I'm doing :) Does Inkscape simply lack documentation to help people do the calculations? Can Inkscape make it easier for users by providing presets that would lock existing Spiral tool's options to some ratio so that one could pick, say, hyperbolic or archimedean or logarithmic spiral and draw as many turns as (s)he wishes? Hey xl cheese, I'd recommend doing a clean checkout again from "https://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/inkscape/inkscape/trunk" instead (note the inkscape at the beginning). That will ensure you won't run into the issue a few of our devs recently have. Also, since you're on Ubuntu, I'd recommend pulling up a terminal and doing "sudo apt-get build-dep inkscape" which will pull down the dependencies for you. I will be honest that I can't offer anything good advice-wise in trying to get eclipse to work as I've never used it. Gail, do you want to chime in? However, if you want to know the standard way to build (again in a terminal), after the initial checkout or when I make clean I do this: "svn up && ./autogen.sh && ./configure && make && sudo make install". Then I just typically do "svn up && make && sudo make install" after that. I also CCd the devel-list as well to get others input to perhaps help with Eclipse (and it's a good place to ask development related Qs in general)... Hopefully the above is at least a little helpful for you... * Draging the scale handles with Alt now scales selection by an integer factor, i.e. up to 2, 3, 4, etc. times the original size or down to 1/2. 1/3, 1/4, etc. of the original size (in any of the two dimensions independently). This replaces the old and rarely used "slow" scaling mode with Alt. Admittedly this use of Alt is not very consistent with others - I would prefer to use Ctrl for that but it's already used for preserving ratio. At least, this mode is much more useful than the Sodipodi-era, very counterintuitive old "slow" mode where a move of the mouse pointer resulted in 1/10 of the displacement. -- bulia byak Inkscape. 1. I moved the 3D box tool back under Rect on the toolbar - it's definitely one of the shape tools and most logically belongs with other shapes. 2. I moved the filter effects dialog to Object menu under Fill and Stroke, instead of the Effects menu. SPStyle now uses SPFilterReference

I changed SPStyle to use SPFilterReference for linking up filters, the same as filters use to link up to each other. This simplified SPStyle code (got rid of ad-hoc hreffing, etc) and fixed at least one bug: now filters are no longer lost when you undo an effect from Effects menu. Of course there may be gotchas, so please report to me any crashes and misbehaviors in filters linking (but not rendering - that is Niko's domain now, my changes should not affect that). If all goes smoothly I will similarly switch SPStyle's paintservers (gradients and patterns) which will fix a bunch of other long-standing bugs. -- bulia byak Inkscape. My investigations have lead me to this little gem in edgit-widget.cpp: void * EditWidget::getWindow() { return this ; } This surprised me a little as EditWidget is a subclass of Gtk::Window. EditWidget is cast into a void*, then in SPDesktop::getToplevel it's cast into GtkWindow*. Can someone explain to me why EditWidget::getWindow returns a void* not a Gtk::Window*? why is the type thrown out? Am I missing something here? I'm very surprised that this series of casts works at all. I assume that the Gtk::Window class contains GtkWindow* as the first member. Shouldn't this be fixed? GTK+ and GTKMM problems

Hi All, After the discussions of a few weeks back, I'm working on a (supposedly) minor mod to correctly set the parenting of the file dialogs. Many inkscape modal dialogs do not have the inkscape desktop correctly set as their parent window, so that in Windows, at least, it becomes possible for the user to hide a file dialog, say, behind the inkscape desktop by simply clicking on it (as mentioned in bug #1431528) for example. For the file dialogs, correcting this is fairly simple: there's a version of the Gtk ::FileChooserDialog constructor which has an extra parameter allowing you to specify a parent window. Now here's my problem: It's fairly easy to get the GtkWindow* of the desktop window - C style, from a SPDesktop pointer. However, the Gtk ::FileChooserDialog constructor requires a Gtk::Window&. The obvious solution to this is to use the Glib ::wrap function which takes in one, and returns the other. The problem comes when you have to tidy up. If you do a C++ delete on the desktop's wrapper Gtk::Window* returned by Glib::wrap, it doesn't just destroy the wrapping, but also the desktop window itself. So that if you press OK or Cancel in a file dialog, gtkmm responds by completely closing down inkscape - which is rather a shame. What I really want here is "temporary wrapper" just to satisfy FileChooserDialog. There seems to be rather a lack of documentation about all this - or maybe I don't know where to look. Am I right in thinking that while all inkscape dialogs use Gtkmm, the main window is based on plain old GTK+ ? If not, is there a way I can get a reference to it's underlying Gtk::Window rather than a crumby GtkWindow*? If so, would it be appropriate to create a wrapped Gtk::Window at the beginning of the life of the SPDesktop and stored inside, only deleting it after the desktop is finally closed? - so that the SPDesktop::getToplevel would instead return a pointer/reference to this Gtk::Window, rather than a GtkWindow*? [I seem to be the only one using SPDesktop::getToplevel]. As much of a PITA as all this is, I would like to find a solution, because it's not just the file dialogs that are suffering from a lack of parentage. It's even possible to put the About box behind the desktop - which is just a bit yucky. Oh and sorry about the ^Ms Joel

Need some input for solving UI bug

Revision #15307 fixes bug #1740146, in which changes in the document-properties dialog are written to the wrong document when multiple documents are open. In registered-widget.cpp, we used to have if (!repr) repr = SP_OBJECT_REPR (sp_desktop_namedview(dt)); but this won't update "repr" when the focus has changed to another document. Just removing the if-statement did the trick, but this is also needed for the other controls. We have two other options though: - make "repr" a local variable instead of a class-variable. Why should it be a class-variable after all? - have a mechanism to notify the class of changes in the focus and update "repr" accordingly, but I don't see a reason for doing it like this. I'm not very familiar with the GUI stuff yet, so some pointers in the right direction would be appreciated. Diederik

Crashbug on fixing XML node creation.

Hi all, I am about to fix a bug in the code... /display/canvas-grid.cpp line 229: newnode = xml_doc->createElement("inkscape:grid"); newnode->setAttribute("type", getSVGName(gridtype)); repr->appendChild(newnode); Inkscape::GC::release(repr); <--- this line should be there but isn't When I add that GC::release line, a strange bug appears. When repeating grid creation and undoing by pressing the new button and then pressing ctrl+z, first it works fine, but after a number of repetitions Inkscape crashes (svnhead, WinXP). Okay, I've committed some updates, which I think fix most of the minor issues. -- Effects without GUIs work now -- The working directory for scripts is the same as the working directory for Inkscape instead of a temp directory. I don't think this fixes all the win32 issues -- but it is the same as before. -- Parameters don't have extra quotes -- Removed plugin code to the SVN history --Ted

I think that you're going to have to keep things at the repr/xml level because I don't think that we currently have a way to take the data modified in the SP_ level and reencode it back into a PNG for the repr level. So, it'll be better to have IM build the PNG and place it on the XML node as data. Then Inkscape can pull it into the renderer. Not as efficient, but it should work without having to implement some crazy PNG stuff. (again, the people on -devel may correct me :) ) --Ted

back-compatibility: font name quoting

It looks like recent trunk has begun putting single quotes around font names with spaces in them; I believe this is fine in terms of the CSS spec, except that recent released versions of Inkscape can't parse that and end up using the default font (generally bitstream vera) instead. Ideas? -mental

n00b questions

Hi, Given that I'm pretty new to the Inkscape developement world, I had a couple questions. The first is this: what hurdles stand between Inkscape today, and v1.0? I love using it, and I've now completely migrated over from CorelDRAW. I'm really keen to see Inkscape develop and become more and more popular, for a couple of reasons: 1. it's good for the world, and 2. more users mean more developers which means more features/innovation more quickly - which is good for me! v0.45.1 is great, and v0.46 will be even greater. I'm now happy to use Inkscape for most of my design work. It's not perfect - it's a bit rough around the edges, but in general it does the job pretty well. From my point of view, the app needs a bit of polishing here and there to improve slickness, but generally it's in pretty good shape. However, reading the roadmap it says that we're at least 11 releases away from v1.0. If you're roughly on a 6 month release cycle, that puts v1.0 at least 5 years away! Surely that's not right? I worry that until Inkscape gets to >v1.0 it will be seen as "experimental" and "unstable" by many. I worry that until 1.0, the app will languish, not attracting the user base or developer base it deserves.. Companies won't trust it, and Ubuntu probably won't bundle it for example. So to rephrase my question: how many of the tasks in the roadmap are *truly* necessary? Maybe I'm being niéve, but surely inkscape doesn't have to be all things to all men - even at 1.0. Many of the ideas seem tantalysing; I can't wait. But surely we need to sort between "must have" and "nice to have". We can add the "nice to haves" into v1.1, or v2.0 just fine, no? I'll ask my second question in a second e-mail.

For myself I would like to see as much live updating in inkscape as possible. The more visual feedback the user gets, the more fluid the app will feel. If using an effect were like compiling a program, then: no, you wouldn't want to update every time you change a line of code. Compiling is slow, and the intermediate results are completely useless. However, we're trying to help te user be artistic. Effects generally run quite quickly, and the intermediate results are often useful in helping the user find the magic combination of parameters that create just the right effect. Live updating needn't make inkscape feel slow if: 1. script threads run at low/medium a priority so the rest of the app/system don't lock up. 2. script execution is quickly aborted if the user changes a parameter, or presses cancel. On a connected topic: would it be worth adding some kind of optional progress API to the python set? This way potentially long running scripts can give some feedback as to the percentage progress that has been made. I think this could be useful when doing live preview, or when doing the final render. Being with the project for a few years, I can tell you it's seen nothing but steady growth and adoption. It seems that once people understand why it's not "1.0", they get past the superficial numbering. Honestly, if people choose software based on version number, they're not properly evaluating all candidates. That said, if people view Inkscape as a general purpose vector editor and not an SVG editor, if we hit 1.0 without full color management support and rockstar pdf output, things would look really bad to them. Oh and as for Ubuntu bundling it... two of our core devs are Ubuntu developers, so if we will ever stand a chance, it probably lies more with their powers of persuasion (and user demand) than a superficial number. ;) For the record, the first thing that Ubuntu utilizes on your computer at startup (GRUB) is only 0.97, or rythmbox which is a default install is at 0.11, etc... so I don't think numbers matter that much. So... if you want to get things moving toward 1.0 you can either polish up the rough edges you see, or work toward SVG Tiny compliance. Either way, it moves Inkscape forward. :) -Josh P.S. Bulia and Carl Worth (a core Cairo dev) know what fixes we need. There are 3 or 4 of them I believe. A couple which are pretty serious. One relates to spurious lines showing up when zooming in. Another relates to Masks not rendering correctly (which you could possibly look into on our end to make it compatible with how Cairo currently wants masks, as it would be faster than waiting for the fix on Cairo's end - per Carl). And there is one or two more that I don't recall offhand. Honestly, before any faster hardware rendering, the biggest benefit we get is half the memory consumption... not to mention free renderer upgrades as Cairo improves. > Or are there other things to think about? or is it simply a work in progress for the assigned developer? Here's my second question: how's the cairofication coming along? For me this would be a truly killer feature: fast hardware rendering in OpenGL. What problems stand in the way of us switching over before the next release? I heard about the problem with off-centre elipse gradient fills. Is this the only sticking point? Couldn't we just cludge it by composing the gradient out of loads of bilinear filled triangles, or by a pile of ellipses? Or couldn't we put pressure on the Cairo guys to add support - wouldn't having Inkscape use their engine be a big incentive for them to grease the weels? Or are there other things to think about? or is it simply a work in progress for the assigned developer?

I assume you refer to the gtk+ stock icons that are being used in the stable windows builds, and yes, they fit in somewhat bad on windows. However, new gtk+ stock icons are coming in the next stable release (gkt+ 2.12?). These should blend in a bit better with other windows applications. Toolbar Icons in Windows

I have a question about standard toolbar icons. I notice that when I run inkscape in Gnome in Ubuntu, the system provides some of the standard icons in toolbar for things like Open, Save, Print, Cut, Copy and Paste. These Ubuntu provided icons look really good (are they Tango?). However, in the Windows version of Inkscape (or is it GTK+ ?), the standard icons just look a little dreary, and washed out. Is there any chance that the Windows users could have brighter icons which follow the Windows style guidelines? - like the Silk Icons (http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/silk/), or for that matter any icons which follow the Tango style guidlines? Sorry to keep posting comments about such seemingly trival details - I'm just stickler for details sometimes.

new API: XML::Subtree

I've introduced a new API for monitoring changes to subtrees of a given XML tree. It extends the existing change notification API for XML::Node by providing an attachment point for NodeObservers to observe changes to an entire subtree in the document, instead of just a single node. The main difference is that rather than registering a NodeObserver with a Node via Node::addObserver, you create a Subtree object for that node and add the observer to it instead. XML::Node *some_node; XML::NodeObserver &observer; ... XML::Subtree *subtree = new XML::Subtree(*some_node); subtree->addObserver(observer); ... subtree->removeObserver(observer); delete subtree; // XML::Subtree is manually manged I'm going to do a more efficient implementation of XML::Subtree eventually, but that shouldn't alter the API given here. -mental

With xml2po, translators would get regular po files to translate, with all the positive effects (no manual looking for string changes; more dedicated tools than for Docbook; familiarity of amny translators with the format; translator credits for free (even though we don't pull them yet for the About box); strings from included images are in the same file; the Gnome people are using it; and probably some more). I am using xml2po for the German translation since pre-0.45, and it worked quite well so far. I have started automating the conversion process to HTML/SVG (to the then intermediate Docbook XML) in SVN. So if there are no valid objections overriding the plusses, I will soon start converting all translated Docbook XML files to the po format. Please submit any translated XML files that are not yet in SVN. I think now is a good time to tackle that process, considering that 0.46 is probably a while but not too far away, and there are quite some efforts going into tutorials recently (thanks Ryan :). Effects on Win32 (and side note)

Okay... first off, I nuked my svn checkout, xmingw, and my gtklibs... Then brought everything back up-to-date and clean at that. Cross-compiled for win32 and fired up inkscape on the win32 box. The error I reported yesterday persisted (about not finding python25.dll). I manually moved the dll file from the main inkscape dir into the python subdirectory where python.exe resides. This solved problem of not being able to find the dll. However, effects still do not work. When I try to run effects (interpolate is my example here) I now get output stating: "python: can't open file 'share\extensions\interp.py': [Errno 2] No such file or directory" For the sake of trying to find a workaround (like the dll), I copied the "share\extensions" directory structure with the contents into that python dir as well (hey it worked for the dll). Unfortunately, this did not fix it. It seems like this may be more related to our library upgrade and new python than the changes Ted made. I really want to make sure that people will still be able to use effects on win32, and it seems like the sooner we can know if there's a problem, the better. Anyone else building for/on win32 having a different experience? Again, note that I'm cross-compiling, not compiling natively. Side note: Bob, the gtkrc file copied to "inkscape\etc\gtk-2.0" has the correct change I suggested. But, the gtkrc file that is in "inkscape\share\themes\MS-Windows\gtk-2.0" does not have the change and it is the one inkscape actually uses. -Josh P.S. Hi again, I'm currently working on a patch to add support for native file dialogs for windows users. It's worked out pretty well, and I'm almost finished. I have one slight problem though: parent windows. In the GTK version, sp_file_open_dialog (in file.cpp) is called from inside FileVerb::Perform in verbs.cpp. But how is it possible to get the GdkWindow object of the windows in which the verb was invoked? If I have this I can add it as an extra parameter to sp_file_open_dialog, to enable both the GTK, and Win32 file dialogs to be correctly set as child windows of the document's window. Hi Inkscapers, I was just talking with a friend while he is working on some diagrams in inkscape, and he wants to be able to have items in multiple groups. (This is a network diagram, so for example it would be nice to have a set of all nodes, to be able to change color and style, but then also put various subnets of nodes into their own groups so they can be transformed as a unit.) Looking into it a bit it seems that this is really a limitation of the way svg handles groups, and since both groups and layers in inkscape are implemented with svg groups I guess it's not possible to use a set oriented approach like this? Any ideas why groups are limited in this way within the svg spec? I can imagine a number of situations in which it would be nice to change style attributes or script or transform on different sets of potentially overlapping objects. Any thoughts on this? -Jeff

Hi everyone, following Gail's example, I would like to post a short note on my progress, too, and at the same time announce version 0.1 of the 3D box tool. :) Well, that's probably too much of a promise. It is _extremely_ limited, the only thing it may be useful for is giving an impression of the envisaged behaviour (also see http://www.rzuser.uni-heidelberg.de/~malbert/core_functionality.shtml ). I'd appreciate comments, although I admit that there is not much to comment on yet. ;) All you can do at the current stage is create a box in a fixed perspective. No dragging of corner nodes is possible yet, nor of vanishing points (VPs) or perspective lines (PLs), nothing. Although you can of course treat boxes as "normal" groups of paths and edit them in the usual way. However, since currently the transform method is not implemented, you should hit Ctrl+Shift+G and Ctrl+G before doing so (in order to ungroup and regroup the paths representing the faces, which removes the 'sodipodi:type="inkscape:3dbox"' attribute from the group so that it is not recognized as a 3D box any more; this mainly fixes issues with undo/redo). In the current fixed perspective the edges of the box are drawn along parallel PLs directed towards "infinite" VPs in x-, y- and z-direction. You will notice, however, that as soon as the 3D box tool is activated, three points are drawn on the canvas. They represent "finite" VPs and it is possible to switch between "finite" (i.e., the PLs meet in the respective VP) and "infinite" (i.e., the PLs are parallel) in each direction by toggling the corresponding button in the 3D box toolbar. The VPs will be color-filled when their state is finite. Sorry that they don't disappear again when switching to another tool, but I didn't want to invest a lot of time in making them work better when I need to rewrite the code anyway as soon as they become draggable. BTW, already drawn boxes are not updated live yet, toggling the VPs' states only affects the drawing of new boxes (also note that when the VPs are white they don't affect the drawing of boxes, although they appear on the canvas; this is a bit counter-intuitive when using the tool for the first time). Since the functionality is so limited I decided to hide the tool's icon for the time being. To make it visible, simply uncomment line #129 in src/toolbox.cpp. You can also change the position/direction of finite/infinite VPs by setting the corresponding values in src/box3d-context.cpp (starting from line #122) and recompiling. Very inconvenient, I know. And if anyone wants to design a *nice* icon for the toolbox, you are most welcome (I haven't invested any time in that so far). Well, I really hope to make faster progress starting from next week. I have just handed in my Diplom thesis (whose completion took a lot more time than expected) so that I could only work part-time on SoC during the past weeks. Cheers, Max

The details really do matter. The dialog should not be nearly the same (all except for that one little thing), it needs to be exactly the same. When one calls the OpenFileName API you get the open file dialog for the version of windows which you are using. But, I suspect it'll be impossible for use to make clones of the file dialogs of *all* windows versions - especially when you take forwards compatibility with future versions of Windows into account. This is why we need to use the Windows API. I'm very impressed that the Print dialog is now the native windows file dialog - it just looks so much better! For versions of Windows before Vista, there is scope for making slight changes to the dialog by modifying the "dialog template". This basically allows you to add extra controls to it. Vista has a slightly more refined, better supported way of allowing you to do the same thing. So there would need to be different code for all versions prior to vista to all versions vista and onwards. I would say that is the way windows works almost every app has a slightly different spin on what their apps open dialog looks and functions like. Sure most use the base open dialog as a base for their implementation but its still different, some even implement completely different looking and functioning ones, that's every version of office that i can remember and many other graphic apps. I just want to make sure that we think carefully about the downside for multi-platform users and issues is may cause with helping users. You use one application on several platforms, wheras most people use one platform and several applications, so we really need to optimise consistency on a per-platform basis, not on a per-app basis; simply to satisfy the expectations of the users. Hey... I'm glad a couple of people agree with me, so I'm not going crazy. I think trying to embed GTK in Windows native in GTK seems like a very hard, risky, and potentially ugly way of solving the problem. I'm much more in favour of implementing an shell thumbnail extension to achieve our goal, mainly because it would be a more Windowsy solution, and would result in less hassle. This would solve the SVG preview problem for XP and Vista users, in Inkscape, and allow them to thumbnail across the whole system, which could be a significant selling point! That's a good tip. I agreee with you also that we need to do better with the parenting. The problem extends well beyond the file dialogs. That's currently not passed into sp_file_open_dialog, but should be. (infact, very few verbs use it, but they should). Hey... I'm glad a couple of people agree with me, so I'm not going crazy. I think trying to embed GTK in Windows native in GTK seems like a very hard, risky, and potentially ugly way of solving the problem. I'm much more in favour of implementing an shell thumbnail extension to achieve our goal, mainly because it would be a more Windowsy solution, and would result in less hassle. This would solve the SVG preview problem for XP and Vista users, in Inkscape, and allow them to thumbnail across the whole system, which could be a significant selling point! Is there any reason why sp-ellipse.cpp uses .552 as the ellipse-to-bezier constant rather than something with a few more digits: 0.55228474983079356 I know it probably makes little visual difference, but why not use the exact number if you have it? I certainly wouldn't use 3.14 for PI. So why use .552 when you mean 4*(sqrt(2)-1)/3? --bb

SVG Support in the Wiki

Hi All, I was in the process of trying to construct a wiki page for the spirograph extension I was working on a couple of months ago. There's not very much to say about it, but I've got an SVG of the output to demonstrate with. The SVG support in the wiki seems to be rather broken, as you can see: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Spirograph. Normally I'd just cut my losses and upload with PNG, it's just that I think the wiki of an SVG editor probably should have it's SVG support configured correctly. What do we think? Joel Holdsworth

Compiling with btool in Windows Vista

Hi Everyone, I'm just in the process of trying to get involved with the development of inkscape, and I've spent the last few weeks trying to compile it by various methods. The btool method (as suggested here http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Win32Port ), is the simplest way, and in the end, the only way I can see to compile inkscape in Windows (although I have tried several approaches). Inkscape can be compiled no problem on a fresh install of Windows XP - I tried it on Virtual PC this morning. However, (and you may already be aware of this), it does not compile properly on Windows Vista, my main OS. First, mingwenv.bat runs successfully, whether running in an administrator or normal console. But there's hitch on the next step. The problem relates to g++ I think. If I do the step: "g++ buildtool.cpp -o btool", I get back the response "g++: _spawnvp: No such file or directory". It is possible to get past this step by compiling with btool with cygwin. However once you try and run btool.exe, you get the output printed below, which you may notice contains the killer line "i686-pc-mingw32-g++.exe: _spawnvp: No such file or directory". I think this must all be a problem with g++ in Vista. I'm not sure how what the dev team can do, but I think the wiki should be updated at least. Wiki and Planet Skins

you may have noticed that the wiki and the planet skins have been changed to come into line with the inkscape website. (im not sure if the wiki skin is the default yet, but if you want to set the skin as your default in users prefs, that will work - the skin is unimaginatively called "inkscape") if there are any problems with these, or you have some suggestions for improvements, feel free to discuss them, and i will try to include them... i intend to try to get the posts on the planet looking a bit better, maybe even displaying them in speech bubbles similar to http://planet.gnome.org/ cheers, ryanlerch

Effects error dialog

Could someone puh-lease help me. I'm translating the python extensions to use lxml and the effects error dialog is really driving me nuts. It is modal and it doesnt' stay ontop of the inkscape window. This makes it the most annoying dialog ever. This is a Win32 problem. I run and effect that generates an error. I switch to a text editor to fix the error. I click back on inkscape and the error windows is below inkscape so I have to minimize all the other windows and then move inscape to the left or two the right to read or close the dialog. To make matters worse the dialog is always placed in the middle of the inkscape window, so I have to move inkscape every time. I tried to hack the dialogs ontop hack for this dialog and failed. I added a class called SPTRefReference, similar to SPUseReference. It extends URIReference. When I try to instantiate it in my tref struct's init function (tref->ref = new SPTRefReference(SP_OBJECT(tref));), just as the SPUse struct does, it won't link. Something about missing definition for SPTRefReference's vtable. Anyone know what step I am missing? Probably something small or maybe related to this particular compiler (which I have not used before; at least not on Windows). Much appreciated, Gail

Hi all, In my quest to implement <tref> I have been examining the <use> element. In its implementation, there are several members related to the connection it makes to the element it wants to use. I'm trying to sort out which of these is necessary because it seems that there is some duplication. SPUse has the following as members: gchar * href; SPUseReference *ref; sigc::connection _delete_connection; sigc::connection _changed_connection; sigc::connection _transformed_connection; But SPUseReference is in fact a subclass of URIReference. Does having this make the other members redundant to a point? Similarly, SPTextPath uses a subclass of SPUseReference called SPUsePath, which contains all the same sigc::connection stuff that is stored in SPUse. Is it possible that SPUse could strip itself of the connection stuff and maybe even the href (not sure exactly the need for that one) by replacing the SPUseReference with SPUsePath? Most importantly, is there any reason that SPTRef could use SPUsePath to refer to the element it will take character data from? Thanks, your help is much appreciated :) Gail

Layers Dialog Mockup.

The other day, i decided to lock an object using the "lock" checkbox in the properties dialog box, and when i wanted to edit this object again, the only way i could find to unlock it was to edit the XML using the XML editor. New template and palette committed but not installed

hello all, I committed a new template and a new color palette (for use with the Beamer LaTeX package, to produce screen presentations). I just added the files to share/templates and share/palettes (around rev 15000) in svn but I discovered today that, though the files are in a source checkout, they are not installed and therefore not distributed. Is there an extra step to have them installed by "make install"? (I thought that everything in those directories was just copied). Thank you in advance for your help. Fill and stroke properties incompatibility between devel and release versions

Hello everyone, Certain drawings I produce with a recent development version of Inkscape display with stroke and fill attributes as unset in the release version (0.45.1). It is not really a show stopper because it is quite easy to make people install a devel version of Inkscape but it does not help collaboration ("Hey, the image you just sent me is all black!"). I cannot reproduce this on new drawings currently (with devel version 070603200 vs. 0.45.1 on windows) but this file: http://cbetm.univ-perp.fr/repos/distribution_data/tetiaroa/trunk/sampling/s… shows the behavior (NB: you probably have to "save as" and add the svg extension manually on this link. I don't know why but the apache subversion interface insists on treating the file as text). I am the only one seeing this? I won't be able to do some more tests before a while (the logic board of my laptop fried....grrrr) but I thought I would report this before I forget about it. Cheers, JiHO

I think it's a good idea, so long as there are volunteers to handle approving account requests. One thought I've had is if it can be configured to work with LDAP, we could try to shift the project to being more LDAP-based. I have zero LDAP experience, and haven't made any progress on setting this up on inkscape.org, but that's sort of the direction I've wanted to go. Especially since we've also talked about setting up additional software like a forum, translation tool, bug tool, etc. Having to force people to have 7+ separate logins for all these inkscape tools would be annoying at best for both user and admin, so if most could be set up to use LDAP, then it'd save a lot of time all around. Corel Draw CDR importer

Hi, I've just found the sK1 Projekt: http://sk1.sourceforge.net/ It's an Skencil (aka Sketch) fork with an Corel Draw CDR file importer. I haven't tested it but it may be a nice way to convert Corel Draw files to SVG. Perhaps even someone may be interested in porting the code to Inkscape or to a lib that can be used in both programs. Strange glitch (or feature?) in an Inkscape file

Hey all, I just experienced a moment of slight panic - I had a file full of icons (35 to be exact) which I wanted to batch export to separate PNG files. I use a layer below my icons, with transparent rectangles. They are all named appropriately. This is something I do a lot, but on this specific file, batch exporting always resulted in a single file. After much experimentation, I finally decided to take a look at the XML code, and found that every rectangle had this parameter: inkscape:export-filename="C:\2D_Art\icons\AAA.png" (AAA.png is also the name of one of the rectangles/icons in the file) The parameter was identical in all rectangles, and this somehow caused all the rectangles to be exported to the same filename and overwrite each other. A quick search and replace removed it and I was able to export as usual, so problem solved. Still, I'm curious to know what caused it. Where did this parameter come from? Is this something left over from an old version of Inkscape? It was a rather old file, untouched for almost a year. Michael

¡Hola! En la página oficial en castellano dice que hay que dirigirse a aquí para hacer consulta. Espero que tengan soporte en castellano. El tema es que bajé Inkscape en su versión Autopackage. Lo instalo sin ningún problema, pero cuando me voy al menú Efectos>Extrusado me pide la librería PYXML. Me dice donde bajarla y la bajo; pero ésta viene en código fuente y hay que compilarla. Yo no sé cómo se hace. ¿Hay solución para esto? Gracias. Emilio.

Hola Emilio, en primer lugar te sugiero que le eches un vistazo (y que te suscribas) a la lista de usuarios en español: inkscape-user-es@...460... Allí te atenderán mucho mejor. En cuanto al problema que te ocupa, quizás puedas encontrar el paquete correspondiente a pyxml para tu distribución (cosa que deberías mencionar cuando pides este tipo de ayuda). Si no resuelves por ahí, vuelve a preguntar, pero indicando más datos: versión de inkscape, sistema operativo (distribución), entorno de ventanas (Gnome, KDE, etc.) y algún otro dato que pueda se de interés. Where is code for the inkscape prefs dialog?

I've grepped through the sources trying to find where the "Save window geometry" entry in the preferences dialog comes from but I'm coming up with nothing. Where is the code for the prefs dialog? Other than that and a little tweaking, I've pretty much got my patch for remembering window sizes and state (maximized/fullscreen) working. I just need to add the preference to the prefs dialog. --bb

Hello, I wonder whether pdf has the ability to output blur/filter natively. I do a lot now with blur like shadows but the exported pdf is not the same. I already downloaded the pdf reference but there might be to much pages so I did not found the reference. I am looking for something that corresponds to svg filters. Any hints as to which files I should look at for adding the ability to save Inkscape's window position between runs? -------------------------- Proposal: The basic idea would be to add another preference under Windows which is "Restore last window geometry" right before "Save window geometry" The the logic would be to try saved geometry in the doc first, then use the user preference. onStartup: if (startupDoc && startupDoc.hasSavedWindowLayout) { setWindowGeometryFromStartupDoc(startupDoc); } else if (userPrefs.restoreLastWindowGeometry && userPrefs.hasStoredWindowGeometry) { setWindowGeometryFromUserPrefs(userPrefs); } onShutdown: saveLastWindowGeometryToUserPrefs(getCurrentWindowGeometry) This would also save/restore the maximized state as is common for MS Windows apps. --------- Actually my preference would be to reverse the order and always use the userPrefs first if restoreLastWindowGeometry is set, but I'm thinking the other way around would be more politically acceptable with current developers. And I don't think the difference is worth making yet another preference. Suggestions appreciated. This one just really frustrates me. I started looking over the startup code today but didn't immediately find where prefs or window geometry are handled. --bb
