How debug you under windows?

Hi, Im new here. I have check out inkscape from svn and build its under WinXP like describe on http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Win32Port. It was very easy. Many thanks for this. Next step I will look into the code with a debugger for lerning how inkscape work and find the right place for my modifications wishes. My question: Are there any way for debug inkscape under WinXP with a IDE integrated debugger (e.g. DevC++, Code::Blocks, Eclipse/CDT or MS Visual C++)? How debug you under windows? Thanks in advance! "Repeat last action feature", need some advise

Hi, all, For a specific bug I needed fixed (doesn't affect Inkscape, as far as I know), I built mingw cross- and native-compilers with a particular bugfix patch applied. Win32 builders don't need to upgrade unless they want to. However, they do both have the latest win32api and mingw-runtime libs applied. Minion font problem

I own Adobe FontFolio 8.0 and have strange problems with Minion font family. Those fonts render correctly with GIMP and Scribus, but not Inkscape. If I somehow manage to get them on canvas, they get totally messed up when picking Bold or Italic faces of the same using Font dialog, but not if I use secondary toolbar for the same purpose. Anyone experienced similar problems? Thanks in advance, Vlada

Hello all, Here is my application, please give me comments so I can improve it. Most of you know me already but I decided to write a biography anyway :) What happened to grids? Yesterday I committed my grid framework implementation which facilitates easier grid implementation. I think the grid GSoC project should focus more on technical 3D drawing then only on grids (see http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=38507645) I decided to have a go on a topic I had not worked on yet. I am very enthusiastic about the live effects, especially after a reassuring IRC chat :) Unfortunately I was not able to pass this enthusiasm onto a friend who is too psyched up about some other GSoC project where he gets some DSP hardware to work on... CorelDRAW Import

I'm here, like several others, because of Google's SoC. I am a Master's student in Mechanical Engineering at Southern Methodist University. I have kept an eye on Inkscape for several years, but I have only rarely had occasion to use it. I, like everyone else here (it seems), am interested in adding facilities that will make Inkscape easier to use to make 3D drawings. Being an engineer, I am also interested in being able to use it to make orthographic drawings. Aside from the 3D box tool, there are several features that might prove useful for 3D drawing: 1) Isometric/Axiometric grid 2) Diagonal guides (converging to a vanishing point) 3) Drawing with a prespecified transformation 4) Make Ctrl-dragging a node observe the object's transformation matrix 5) Perspective transformation (this would require somehow extending SVG's transformation mechanism) 6) Support for snapping non-node corners of rectangles I would be happy to work on any of these features over the summer. The usefulness of the first two seem obvious (to me), but the rest may take some explaining. Being able to set a transformation before you start drawing would allow you to, for example, set up drawing top faces for an isometric drawing, and have the rectangle tool work properly for those faces. Similarly, it would be useful to have a convenient way to move a node only along the basis vectors of an object's coordinate space, thus moving horizontally and vertically in the conceptual image. In conjunction with the previous two items, a perspective transformation would allow the same manipulations of orthographic images to be applied to perspective images. As for (6), this is usually taken care of by bounding-box snapping, but that doesn't work when the rectangle has undergone a transformation, making its corners not at the corners of its bounding box. Also, for bug #1674596, would an acceptable replacement for "Export Bitmap..." be "Render to File..."? This seems like an ideal bug for me to figure out the patch submission process because the change is only one line (I think; I haven't been able to test it yet). -- Eric Sumner

NUBIE: extending pstricks output; printing subsystem

Hi folks, I'm looking into fixing (text doesn't appear in output with latest SVN) and extending it to support embedding text as text. During a preliminary familiarisation hack, I've introduced a function: PrintLatex::text(Inkscape::Extension::Print *mod, char const *text, NR::Point p, SPStyle const *const style) (using ps.cpp as an example). I need the position of the text, and I was hoping that p[NR::X] and p[NR::Y] would give this, but they have the value 0.0000 0.0000 I'm new to cpp and Inkscape. Can you advise where I might be going wrong - and any wiki documents I should be checking in addition to PrintingSubsystem best regards, richard

I've become interested in Inkscape again and I'd like to figure out a good way to contribute. Here's a couple things I thought I'd throw out there: 1) I'm used to Bugzilla, has there been any discussion about moving away from a Sourceforge Bug Tracker into something a little more powerful (in terms of search? 2) In Mozilla, anyone can submit a patch to a bug, then the admins/super-reviewers must accept and merge the patch. Is there a mechanism for this within Inkscape? For instance, I'd like to report a bug against a SVG tutorial and then post a suggested fix for it that an admin can take and merge into the codebase. Similarly, my ambitions would be to get into the source code of Inkscape eventually and attempt another patch (this is more of a long-term goal though). Basically is there a way for the "casual" developer to submit patches in a standardized way? Thanks, Jeff

Security updates to Inkscape

Just before 0.45.1 was going to release I happened to do an audit of Inkscape's use of printf-style format strings (and the "..." argument). Unfortunately, there were multiple vulnerabilities[1]. Aaron gracefully delayed the final release so I could get CVEs issued, and notify other distributions. The basic problem the use of a *printf call directly on a variable without a format string. For example: printf(variable); vs printf("%s",variable); In the former, printf will parse any format chars in "variable", including the dangerous "%n", which allows for arbitrary memory overwriting. When functions use "..." to take in format strings for later processing by a *printf function, you can end up in the same situation. (Sorry to pick on ishmal's code, but it's a good example.) From the recent security fix commit: - status(event.getData().c_str()); + status("%s", event.getData().c_str()); "status" was defined as: virtual void status(const char *fmt, ...); Now, since the code is *filled* with format string "..." usage, it can be a real pain to find them all. Luckily, gcc has an attribute to flag a function as acting like a printf-family call, and Glib has a macro to create this attribute if gcc is being used as the compiler. So, now "status" is defined as: virtual void status(const char *fmt, ...) G_GNUC_PRINTF(2,3); The two args in G_GNUC_PRINTF point[2] to the format string variable, and the "..." argument. In the case of a class (as above) there is an implicit "this" argument as argument #1, meaning the format string "fmt" is really arg 2, and the "..." happens at position 3, as reflected in the G_GNUC_PRINTF usage. These markings, combined with the gcc compiler flag "-Wformat-security" will issue warnings about missing format strings, and do other strict type-checking. I've added this to the default CFLAGS as well. (And -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2, which adds even more protections via glibc.) Overall, many format issues were corrected[3], only a few of which were security-sensitive (37 files changed, 120 insertions(+), 111 deletions(-)). When making new "..."-using function, please review the glib macros for appropriate attributes, and take care to use them safely. I'd especially appreciate it if someone could look at: ./display/sp-canvas.h:SPCanvasItem *sp_canvas_item_new(SPCanvasGroup *parent, GtkType type, const gchar *first_arg_name, ...); This seems to be a NULL-terminated list (and not a format string, obviously), but it should get marked as such[4] if that's true. The dom/js/ tree is stuffed with "..." and I did not audit it, since it is not hooked up yet. However, we need to be very careful with it, and I'd MUCH prefer this code stayed outside of the inkscape code base so we can just link to an external library in the event of security updates to those libraries. Hey Max! You seem to share the same enthusiasm as I do. You have beat me to the bug fixing though... I think that if this is possible, it's a really great idea. Our abilities seem to match up well, because as you say, you have a (probably) deeper understanding of the math, and I (may) have more programming experience given that my major is computer science rather than minor. Yet I imagine we are both sufficiently proficient in both aspects. I guess we can wait and see what the good mentoring folks say, but if we can come up with complementary proposals where we each have separate and sufficient work, I imagine our chances are good! I should note, though, that there are many suggested projects I am interested in, which somewhat deters me from wanting to come up with my own ideas ;) Instead, I may just try to put together a killer proposal for the suggested project ideas. We'll see what happens. My point here is mostly that if you turn out to be more suited for the 3D tool, there are no hard feelings. We should both put forward multiple proposals if possible and it would be nice if we could both get in. Looking forward to seeing how this will play out, Gail

I've had similar concerns before when writing scripts for the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) and some Javascript bookmarklets so these suggestions are based on a fair measure of experience, and some of things I wished I'd had to help me write my scripts. First there is the problem of translation. I'm not sure how we can help translate third party extensions/plugins/scripts/whatever*. I would guess that perhaps certain strings would keep coming up over and over again such as Angles, Detail, Gradient, Path, or something like that so maybe Inkscape could provide some kind of stock labels which would get translated once then any script writer could reuse them (something like how Gnome stock lables are supposed to work)? The other problem - and I've seen this a million times with GIMP scripts - is input checking. The inkbar script fails if the required 12 or 13 characters are not provided, which isn't very forgiving. (In the case of inkbar the rest could probably be padded with spaces.) In general scripts will require input checking, and hopefully this isn't something each script developer would need to writer their own collection of checks and tests for (because in that case testing is unlikely to happen at all). In the case of Python scripts (and any other scripts) there is something of a delay between the time the user sets the values and then hits OK (lets call that stage 1) to execute the script and then another delay before the script runs (stage 2). In practice this delay is usually quite short but delay and errors could be avoided if there was some immediate error checking as the user types to make sure a letter is not typed into a box where only numbers are allowed even before the OK button is hit (stage 1). After the OK button has been hit other checks may also be necessary. (Sorry very tired, I'll stop and try and explain better later, but I think I should probably have phrased things for developers in terms of preprocessing and postprocessing like on Web based forms as an example of how much easier extensions might be.) Anyway, I could do with some help contacting the author of the Inkbar barcode extensions and I hope to get a lot of use out of it (and help make it easier to use, provide an English translation, and anything else i can think of). I do believe it could gain inkscape a lot of attention in small businesses and more. (Useful as Inkbar could be for me I'm not saying I'd want to include it by default, not yet anyway. Inkscape for artists.) Off to see if I can modify the script to group the output to keep things tidy and stop them from falling apart. I explain you my problem: I would have the necessity to modify the attributes of field STYLE of an object to regular intervals of time. More in the detail, I would have necessity to write a “extension” of Inkscape that reads the data of an object (rect, path, star, etc.) from a DBMS and he applies them to the present object on the screen. When you are in the debugger, issue the command 'bt'; this should give you a backtrace to show the functions that were being called to reach this crash. You will probably also need to specify which thread you're debugging; since Inkscape is single threaded we don't have directions on this, however they can be found on the internet - Ubuntu has good directions for debugging multithreaded applications. A technique that I find useful to help identify bugs like this is to set a break point in the code somewhere prior to the segmentation fault, and then step through the lines until the segmentation fault, and look at the values of some variables that might be causing the problem. Generally segmentation faults are caused by mis-used pointers. For instance, trying to use a pointer with a NULL or undefined value. Regarding adding multi-threaded capabilities to Inkscape, this is something which we have avoided. In part, it makes debugging more complex, and it opens a large class of bugs that are challenging to deal with. We've also heard that some of the libraries we use may not behave as well when used in a multithreaded app. If it is very important for you to have the multithreaded capabilities, please explain why; otherwise you may wish to go single threaded to save yourself a lot of difficult work. Either way though, it's exciting to hear of your work on animated diagrams in Inkscape! I'd love to hear more about it. For me it is not binding that my extension is multithread, only interests to me that to regular intervali of time they can be applied of the changes to of the present objects on the canvas and that they have a particular ID or one particular LABEL. Summer of Code 2007 - Possible application?

Hi everyone at the Inkscape team, my name is Maximilian Albert and I am currently a student of mathematics with minor subject computer science at the university of Heidelberg, Germany. This email serves the purpose of introducing myself to the Inkscape community because I am considering applying for Google Summer of Code 2007. For your convenience I have split this email into several sections. I apologize in advance for its length, but I figured it might be helpful to be a bit more verbose and give you a chance to get an impression of me (at least, as far as this is possible via such a rather impersonal medium as email). 1) Current stage of my education. Right now I am in the final stage of my Diplom thesis in mathematics (the Diplom is roughly equivalent to a combined bachelor and master degree). I expect to complete my thesis in the next few weeks. Subsequently, there are four oral examinations the last of which will probably take place in late autumn or even further towards the end of the year. Passing these will finish my studies. 2) How I got interested in the project. I learned about Google summer of Code only about one week ago when I accidentally stumbled across the corresponding webpages. I was fascinated by the concept right from the outset, but with regard to the current state of my studies quickly jettisoned the idea of applying. I figured it would be illusionary to try and tackle an additional project of this extent, given that I will probably be spending most of the time in summer learning for my exams. However, the idea kept lurking in the back of my mind, and since I found myself more and more excited about the project's concept, I thought it over and came to the conclusion that there actually is a very good - and, most importantly, realistic - chance to successfully work on it. By now I am very much willing to give it a try. The point is that I can probably choose the dates of my exams in such a way as to keep the period during which SoC is supposed to take place completely free from any other duties. At this point you will probably be thinking that I am much too over-enthusiastic and therefore running the risk of completely misjudging my capacities. Please be assured that I definitely won't submit an application unless I can 100% guarantee that I will be able to commit my full time and power to the project. I am well aware that this requires very careful planning and organization. But I proved more than once in the past that precisely this kind of "double burden" makes me tap my full potential (this is also why I am mentioning it at all instead of keeping you in the dark about it). I am sure that in case I should really come to the conclusion that an application is realistic, and should I be chosen, I would be of great benefit for the project. 3) Why Inkscape? Having decided to wholeheartedly think about getting involved, I browsed the list of mentoring organizations and was delighted to find Inkscape among them. Way back in the last millenium ;) when I was still working under MS Windows I had made my first experiences with Adobe Illustrator and got even more fascinated about computer graphics and visualization than I already was. After my switch to GNU/Linux many years ago I discovered Inkscape and since then have used it working on a handful of projects, most of which were fun ones only of interest to myself. But some examples are actually used as the logos on my choir's website. See the main page at http://www.kammerchor-alumni.de as well as the several subcategories (unfortunately the site is in German, but clicking on the icons shouldn't require any advanced language knowledge ;)). Recently I have been following the improvements and breathtaking new developments announced on the Inkscape website. More than once I thought about making a contribution (in fact, I already made a tiny one in the form of reporting bug #1598337, but I guess that doesn't really count). Lacking a concrete starting point, however, and above all the necessary time during the preparation of my thesis, I had to postpone the idea. Therefore I was excited to learn about the opportunity of getting involved in the framework of GSoC. 4) My experience in (graphics) programming and open source development To tell the truth, in Heidelberg the demands for computer science as a minor subject with regard to concrete programming tasks are not the highest. Therefore most of the programming I have done so far were smaller projects for my own amusement. However, when working on a practical at the visualization group of the Interdisciplinary Center of Scientific Research [1] which was required for my Vordiplom (a kind of pre-degree), I was lucky in that I could bring in an idea of my own which developed into a very fruitful and quite extensive project. It was concerned with the development of a program I dubbed HyperView, which serves as a tool for 3-dimensional visualization of 4-dimensional spheres, using the Hopf fibration. The projects' documentation can be found at http://pille.iwr.uni-heidelberg.de/~kugeln/ (Luckily, I prepared it in English at the time.) Be warned, however, that the code has not been maintained since the completion of the project in 2003, and I am not even certain that it will currently compile. In recent times my extensive hobby of making music (singing in particular) and in this connection preparing score arrangements and even composing short pieces has led me to get involved with Lilypond,[2] a free(TM) musical typesetter and automated engraving software. My first small contributions were the creation of a new notehead (requested by a composer on the mailing list), a small bugfix and one or two bug reports. Right now I am working on a couple of small to medium-sized projects ranging from the creation of further noteheads and other symbols to the implementation of a new style for microtonal accidentals (used, for example, in contemporary pieces as well as Eastern European and Asian music). All of these are close to being finished, and I hope them to be included in one of the next few development releases (as soon as I will have submitted them). As far as my general programming knowledge is concerned, I am proficient in C, C++, HTML, (shell) scripting, and even such an excentric thing as metafont. ;) Furthermore, I am knowledgeable to different extents in a couple of other languages/tools, including Scheme/Lisp, Python, Perl, sed, and awk. 5) Ideas for a SoC project The most severe problem I am facing right now is that in the short period since mid-week (when I discovered SoC) I haven't yet been able to develop really great ideas about possible projects I could tackle. My primary intention so far has been to get acquainted with the source code (see also point 6 below) and to find out for myself if it would make sense to submit an application (which the way I see it now I would almost certainly answer in the affirmative). Of course, I browsed your website where first and foremost the description of the planned 3D box tool captured my fascination. I believe that all of the ideas related to it that are mentioned on the webpage are certainly both tractable (although the whole lot is doubtlessly too much for a single person during a SoC project) and promising to be fun projects. The underlying mathematics are definitely comparatively trivial from a mathematician's point of view, but judging from my experience with HyperView (see point 4 above) - albeit only on a gut level, without having thought about details yet - I suppose that a lot of small problems can be avoided by choosing the right design approach. I think that my knowledge of the underlying algebra would definitely prove very useful in this regard. Unfortunately (for me, at least ;)), I saw that Gail Banszkiewicz has already exchanged her ideas with you about this project (I may have missed other peoples' contributions on the subject since I only skimmed over the mailing list archives). I certainly do not want to come into conflict with her, especially since she has contacted you much earlier and seems to have more precise ideas. So I will have a deeper look at the other projects described on your website and will also try to come up with and crystalize out my own ideas. On second thought, the shared interest of two people could also be a great advantage because maybe there is a way to split the project into smaller parts which can be tackled more or less independently. If it were possible to agree in some way on a certain design or common interface prior to the start of the project, the two of us (or even more students if interested and accepted) could work independently on their specified task(s). In the end the various features could be combined to yield a much more powerful tool than would have been possible if worked on by a single person alone. Does any one of the mentors who is more into it than I currently am see a possibility for this? Of course, this is only a vague idea and would certainly require Gail's and other people's approval. And I would like to reemphasize that I definitely don't want to thwart anyone. Just thinking aloud ... 6) Completed tasks and open issues related to an application Following the recommendations on your website, I have tried to get acquainted with Inkscape's source code and internals. This also served the purpose of deciding for myself if it would make sense to apply. IMHO, the results have been encouraging. ;) Yesterday I checked out the svn version and compiled it on my system, which worked more or less smoothly. After agreeing on very short notice to participate in a singing project last night, ;) I have been concerned today with fixing bug #1671665 (randomly chosen from the list). This afternoon I was already about to write that my progress looks promising. Waiting until tonight turned out to be a good decision, however, because in the meantime I was able to actually fix the bug. The fix is submitted as patch #1683338. Please feel free to have a look at it and make comments if you wish. This completes half of the required bugfix task, I believe. It is unlikely that I can work on a second one tomorrow but I will do it in the next couple of days and keep you posted on my progress. As I said, it will also take me a few more days before I can finally decide if working on a project this summer really makes sense. Definitely the last thing I want to do is waste both my and your time with a healf-hearted application that is doomed to failure due to misjudgement and bad planning. Dear Inkscape team! I'd like to post a few info here for the benefits of all travellers to LGM. 1. I know the website of LGM is outdated. I expect things to be straightened up in the coming days. :) 2. Meanwhile, the Create wiki has been updated : http://create.freedesktop.org/wiki/index.php/Conference 3. Visa. Please review the VISA info as it might apply to some of you when travelling to Canada. 4. Rooms. We have dealt a LGM special price on rooms at the Student Residences of the uni hosting the LGM. All info is on the wiki. What has guided me is to allow LGM participants and especially the devel teams to be together most of the time (remember we only have 3 days), have internet access and enough room to organize meetings. All that into a calm environment. The residences are on the site of the LGM at less than 5 minutes from the main auditorium. Arrival date : May 3 (Conference starts on May 4). We may be able to arrange things if you want to arrive earlier. Please let me know. And we also want to avoid getting people lost in the city (Montreal is a North American city, quite extended...) and taking up most of their time getting from their hotel to the LGM site and back. I have made a reservation on 50 Single rooms + 5 Cosy Suites (with large bed) and there are lots more room there if needed. On each other floor of the residence people have access to a Salon that can hold a good 10 to 12 people meeting and we also have access to another 3 large rooms for meetings with more than 20 persons at a time. 5. Sponsorship. I am deeply concerned by sponsorship. We have to be able to help people get to the LGM. So far, I am still waiting on confirmation but sponsors have shown clear interest in helping us again this year. OpenICC in SoC

OpenICC has also been selected for Google's Summer of Code. There's a blog entry on it at http://www.valdyas.org/fading/index.cgi/software/iccsoc.html And their main page on it at http://freedesktop.org/wiki/OpenIccForGoogleSoC2007 I point this out in case there are some students out there who aren't as interested in SVG and Inkscape directly, but who are interested in various color issues. We should be interested in OpenICC as the work there is good for graphics apps and professionals, and Inkscape will gain more integration of it over time.

Font size: Pixels vs. Points

I've written a simplistic Python script [1] that will change all of the font-size units in an SVG file from pixels to points. The script doesn't actually do a conversion it simply replaces the unit suffix of px with pt. If you create some text in Inkscape with size 10 and save it; font-size:10px Run the script on the file; font-size:10pt Open and edit the file in Inkscape; font-size:12.5px This is a workaround for the bug that the UI never shows the units (pixels) associated with font size numbers and it is difficult to specify sizes in units other than pixels [2]. This is the quickest hack I could put together when I realized that the text in all of the figures for my thesis was the wrong size, therefore it hasn't been tested much, so if anybody uses it you should take appropriate precautions (e.g. backup your data). Clearly this is an ugly hack, but if there is no interest in fixing the underlying issue, or it's to painful, I could put together something similar as an effect. It seems like a better solution would be to, at a minimum show, what unit font size is in. When setting the default font size in the toolbar specifying a unit results in the correct conversion, so maybe a more general fix wouldn't be to hard. Unfortunately, trying to specify a unit when changing the size of existing text or doing anything with a unit in the text dialog doesn't work. New transform idea: Quick XForm

I've been working an a drawing that involves a lot of little objects that have to be placed in the right spots, and I've found that it's cumbersome using the regular transform tools. I have a new idea (please tell me if it's been done before) for a tool that will make this much easier. Basic synopsis: a tool that transforms an object based on a single mouse drag, combining moving, rotating, and scaling into one. This makes transforming an object much quicker and more natural. Hello, remembered of me! I'm a student graduating in Computer science Engineering and I'm leading a thesis on the Vectorial Diagrams Animated in Inkscape. I had successful to insert of inkscape a "parallel" Thread to the main program, that it reads of the regarding data the characteristics of an object and then assigns them to the object by means of the endured function sp_repr_set_attr(nodes[i],style.c_str(),attrib.c_str()); nodes[i] -> it is a carrier of gunlayers "Node" (std::vector<Inkscape::XML::Node *> nodes;) style & attrib -> are strings. But after this call, the program crasha and it is closed without some message. By means of the debuggher they are successful to understand that there is an error of Segmentation Fault: Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. ---Type <return> to continue, or q <return> to quit--- [Switching to thread 3236.0x6a8] GC_clear_stack_inner (arg=0x47429a0 "", limit=2284336) at misc.c:293 293 misc.c: No such file or directory. in misc.c Current language: auto; currently c You can help me to resolve this problem being given to me some council to follow? Need some input on bug #1540195 (snapping problem)

While looking into bug #1540195 I ran into some dilemma. This bug occurs when a bounding box is squeezed in between two vertical guides and makes it hard to pull the box out of its squeeze. For more details have a look at http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1540195&group_id=9… The original post includes a nice sample file. This is what's going on: 1) Both the 4 points AND the boundingbox (also 4 points) are snapping, as requested in File -> Document Properties. 2) The origin is set to be at the boundingbox edge, as requested in File -> Inkscape preferences -> Tools -> Selector This will not work in the situation described by bwalle. When snapping the boundingbox, the origin must be at the boundingbox. When snapping the nodes, the origin must be at the farthest opposite node. This is what's going wrong: when dragging the edge at the right, both the bounding box and two additional points will be trying to snap to the left guide, even when dragging the right edge far to the right. The left side of the boundingbox is not being transformed, as it's exactly at the origin. The two additional points though are slightly off the origin, and will be transforming almost invisibly. These are causing the troubles. It's difficult to describe exactly what's going on, the best thing to do is to just try it. This is what we could do: 1) calculate the origin ourselves, instead of obeying the preferences. Should this option even be removed from the preferences? Why is this option available to the user at all? 2) filter the snap points in the snapmanager, to only snap the points or boundingbox edges that are being moved. Points close to the origin could simply be discarded. 3) When dragging the boundingbox, we could feed the snapmanager only the points at the edge being dragged. But this doesn't handle the snapping of a complex object consisting of many points 4) ? Does anyone have any suggestions or pointers? Regards, Diederik van Lierop

Hi, While working on translation of inkscape.org into RU, I noticed several things I'd be pleased to have feedback on. 1. Documentation page. 1.1. It has a "Translations" section which is not quite related to docs. Should we introduce a separate "Translations" or "i18n" page with information on status of supported languages and basic info for new translators? 1.2. Publications (Overviews). Those brochures are nice, but _very_outdated (0.39). Could we "hire" some artist to give them a new life? 1.3. Example SVG Files. This is not related to docs as well. Maybe we should introduce a basic PR page for SVG? 2. Showcase page. Very outdated. Latest entry dates back to 2005. Don't we have something newer to show people? ;-) 3. Status page. NEW: flood fill

Inkscape now has a very rudimentary flood fill tool. It works by performing a bitmap-based flood fill on a rendered version of the visible canvas, then tracing the resulting fill using potrace and placing the traced path on the canvas. You can access it by the paint bucket icon in the toolbar. It places the rendered path onto the current layer, so you can have a layer on top (in my case, "Inks") and select the layer below ("Colors") and do the fills so that they always appear below the inks. This tool is in a very basic state, and there are issues with rendering accuracy and memory usage. Some improvements that I can see being done are: * If the [Ctrl] key is held down, clicking on an object changes the fill color to the current fill color, and [Shift]-[Ctrl] changes the stroke color to the current stroke color * A way to either manually or dynamically increase the resolution of the rendered version so that the accuracy of the flood fill is better Try it and let me know what you think. Selector's scale handle modifiers

Currently, when you scale an object by its scale handles in Selector, you can use the following modifiers: Ctrl+mouse drag scale preserving aspect ratio Shift+mouse drag symmetric transformation (around center) Alt+mouse drag slow movement The "slow movement" mode with Alt simply scales the object by 1/10 of your mouse movement, the goal being increased precision. This mode is inherited unchanged all the way from Sodipodi. In my opinion, however, it is weird, counterintuitive and not at all useful. It also has no analogs in other tools. So my question is, will anyone complain if I remove the "slow movement" mode? On the other hand, one useful thing that's missing is the ability to scale the object to 2, 3, 4 and 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 etc of its current size. (This is possible from keyboard by Ctrl+> and Ctrl+< but not by mouse). So I'm thinking about enabling the Alt modifier to do this "quantized scaling". Among other things, this would enable the often needed transformation: flipping an object around one of its bbox edges (by Ctrl+Alt+dragging a side handle). Thoughts? -- bulia byak Inkscape. Hi all! I was chatting with Bulia Byak (I believe - please correct me if I'm wrong) on your IRC channel yesterday about Google's Summer of Code. I just wanted to introduce myself to everyone and say that Inkscape is definitely a project I'm really excited about having the chance to work on. More on that in a bit. In the near future, I hope to write the list again with some ideas on possible projects for SoC. So, a bit about me. My name is Gail and I'm a student at Carleton University. This is my last semester of computer science, after which I will be pursuing a masters of computer science in September. My area of interest is computer vision / graphics / computational geometry. This originally stemmed from the fact that, growing up, I have been really into graphic design in a hobby kind of way. My favorite software has been CorelDRAW, and I even got to work at Corel for some of my co-op terms. I worked on the text engine for DRAW X3, so I imagine it will be a good idea to propose projects outside that area to avoid that nasty IP issue ;) The software is quite large, so there are many areas that I never even touched upon. And so you can see why Inkscape is an exciting project for me. I haven't used it much in the past, but was able to recently pick it up quickly thanks to my experience with vector graphics. It looks like the software has an awesome base already, and lots of potential for new and innovative tools. I like your culture of enforcing high usability that was implied during my IRC chat. To me this is a very important aspect that is often given too little weight. That's it for now... If anyone wants to know more about me, please feel free to ask, and if anyone has any big requests for projects this year, I don't mind working with that! And like I said, I intend to play around some more with the program and come up with some new ideas as well. Until then, Gail

If someone else wants to take a look, my guess is that it's "simply" a matter of getting the boundingboxes right. Basically what I did earlier was adjust the visible area (or something like that, I'd have to check) of the export area to the entire image. Usually this doesn't mean that the entire image is drawn for each stripe, but especially if you have objects spanning the entire image this probably could (I couldn't figure out exactly how this all worked, when I tried actually modifying the clipping code I got some results I didn't expect). What it should do instead is just extend the current stripe by the amount needed by any blurs in the current stripe. One theory I had about why modifying the clipping code didn't work (for me) and why the current set up does work was that perhaps some calculations where creating bboxes with negative coordinates and that possibly something didn't like that much, since I suddenly got off set images and so on, but it's mostly guesswork. BTW, if someone gets this fixed there is a good chance it would also fix bug 1643892.

About the svn-head builds posted on inkscape.modevia.com: are these done automatically or is building manually initiated? (just out of curiosity) More seriously: the quoted time of the build is that PST, CET or...? :) (it can be important when people want to test after bugfixes) As for debugging: the website says to run "gdb --symbols=inkscape.dbg inkscape", however this does not work for me. I use "gdb" and then in gdb I must enter: "file inkscape.exe inkscape.dbg" (note that the order in which the filenames are typed is essential). Then one must enter "run" to run the prog, etc. (I think it is most clear to explicitly write to enter "run" on the website). And... while I am busy: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32_inkscape_org/win32buildnotes.html needs to be updated for the current buildtool. This helps new developers tremendously. Work toward scripting

Several people have asked me to let them know if there is anything they can do to help out toward DOM scripting. I came across something today that would be of excellent help. It is quite possible that ActionScript might turn out to be a much better fit than Spidermonkey as our JS engine, since it is C++ and we would be able to use C++ inheritance rather than Spidermonkey's C bindings, which are hard to understand, convoluted, and incredibly verbose. We would need to test this out first, however, to make sure that it is feasible and worth the effort. What we would need is a MinGW build of ActionScript. The free Mozilla version of this is called Tamarin, and is available at: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/tamarin/ The code can be checked out via cvs: cvs -d :pserver:anonymous@...1680...:/cvsroot co mozilla/js/tamarin The problems I found are mostly these: 1. there are a lot of _asm{} chunks distributed through the code, and when they include a chunk with #ifdef WIN32, they assume that you are using MSVC. What they really need is to split their #ifdefs for win32 to _MSC_VER and __MINGW32__. MinGW needs to use the same asm code as the linux-ia32 pieces. 2. setjmp in mingw is defined as a macro, so when they wrap that in a macro later, there is a problem 3. GrowableBuffer has some Intel asm in one place, but -no- gcc asm version. Someone needs to write the 10 lines gcc-style. There are others. If the hacks are clean, we could help out the Mozilla guys by sending them a patch. They could use this for Linux, too. So if people are really serious about helping out with scripting, this is a good place to start. Thanks. bob

You probably know PostScript does not support Unicode thats why Inkscape creates own "Subfonts" for each font before using in the document. This is the reason for the "-ISOLatin1" in the font name. The second PostScript issue is that it does not handle font names containing spaces. There have to be brackets around. There will be no easy patch in the next future and you will be save if you convert fonts to strokes before. I will have an eye on that. HTH, Adib. PostScript printing problem

The short story is that this would print correctly except as a bitmap: http://home.earthlink.net/~tyrerj/files/OG/ogp_open_window_logo_0.svgz This appears to be an inherent problem with PostScript, but I'm not certain about this. If so, it would be necessary to first transform the SVG file into one that could be converted to PostScript vector format. I also tried the blur filter and had the same problem, it won't convert to PostScript vector format. -- JRT

I just committed the first of a few changes to the file dialogs. Round one here gets rid of the "Append filename extension automatically" checkbox and instead updates the extension live in the dialog. Give it a spin and see how it works. A few more will come in later.

NEW: cairo rendering in outline mode

I was curious if cairo is in fact slower or faster than our current renderer. I didn't feel like converting us totally to cairo yet, but we have outline mode which is much simpler and perfect for tests like this. So in about 3 hours (of which 2 hours were spent figuring out a known bug in cairo) I converted our outline mode rendering to cairo. The result of this experiment, after I adjusted the tolerance of cairo to match our outline mode quality, is near parity. That is, cairo is about as fast as our own renderer, at least for outline mode (i.e. lots of paths but no gradients or transparency). However this claim needs to be qualified: - It is only true for the latest version of cairo (tested with 1.3.14). Versions 1.2.x are noticeably slower. - This uses image backend to render to a memory buffer, and therefore cannot use any hardware acceleration. Using hardware-accelerated backends will require much more drastic changes in Inkscape's architecture. - Even with image backend, currently cairo is used _only_ for path rendering, each path going to its own temp buffer, and these buffers are later composed together just as they were before. I suspect that if this is optimized by allowing a single cairo context draw all of the paths in the drawing into a single buffer, performance will improve noticeably. In any case, since this does not make for any speed regression, and since it fixes at least one bug that our native renderer had in outline mode, I committed this. Please test outline mode thoroughly and report if you find any problems. Buildtool fix

Running buildtool today, there was an occasion where gcc stopped with an error, but there were only warnings on the output. Turns out that the code handling the piping of the messages from the shell was buggy. No wonder that people wanted a listing file. I don't have that file yet (soon), but the warnings and messages are -much- better now. Also, the latest MinGW mingw-runtime has gettimeofday() defined, while older versions do not. If you have a problem compiling buildtool with g++, try compiling with: g++ -O3 -DHAVE_GETTIMEOFDAY buildtool.cpp -o btool.exe I guess that later, when most people have the newer mingw, that can be changed to NEED_GETTIMEOFDAY for the Luddites. :-) bob

NEW: Command line options

Hey, So I added in some new command line options that are fun. * --verb-list will list all the Verb IDs and their names in Inkscape. This makes writing your own menus and hotkeys much easier as you can easily find out what the choices are. * --verb followed by a verb ID allows you to specify a verb to be called on every document opened by Inkscape initially from the command line. * --select followed by a node ID will allow you to add a node to the list of selected objects. Now, initially I thought these would be really good for performance testing, and that was my driver. You could do something like this: $ time inkscape --verb=FileClose my_complex_file.svg And get a reasonable number. But, now, with the selection, I think it can be much more useful than that. You can call effects, or any other verb, then FileSave and FileClose to automate all kinds of things on your diagrams. Have fun, Ted

To answer Bryce, i would be glad to merge efforts with other people. If those people who wants to contribute are mainly for a wiki solution, i'm ready to take if there is a possibility to transform it in more standard format. So my proposal/question would be : 1. make test on transforming wiki to docbook as mentionned 2. clear our mind on the subject 3. open a real space on inkscape.org for this 4. should work from scratch or on basis of mine or kevin's work ? 5. make some ToC to show where we should go 6. have our own release note in purpose to match as soon as possible inkscape releases (was until 0.44 for me in frech) 7. define internationalisation strategy and process My vision of the manual is not giving tutorials (inkscape has already that) but more something like a help file that give precise infos on functionnalities. Core Developers would be first interested in helping the manual or keep close to manual writers (with a reciprocity, of course ;) ) These functionnalities can be illustrate with examples or step by step description if needed. About tav's manual, it is evidently very good and i encourage it as any articles on inkscape (i write myslef some in magazins, soon one in Linux+DVD). But as discussed with Colin Marquee, it would be nice to have an inner help browserthat could be distributed in a different package (see gimp). Some words in the wiki about it. Hope it helps Cedric

Inkscape Project Status

Just to give some visibility into some of the work bubbling away these days: Cairo renderer: Bulia has taken point on investigation of conversion to Cairo. Some tough problems have been uncovered but we're gaining a clearer picture of what needs done. Presently this looks like it will require an all at once brute force approach, rather than incremental refactoring. If so, we'll need to reach a decision on how to undertake that while minimizing disruption to SVN HEAD users. Build system: There is definitely a concensus that our current build system sucks. Options include CMAKE, Bob's buildtool, or just a cleaned up automake. We really need to have interested parties mind meld and find a single solution. Version control system: Mental has been experimenting with git and trying to get it to operate with svn. This study is still very early on, but if it works out well, one day we may begin encouraging developers to use git. Bug tracking: I have been experimenting with use of Mantis with the goal of replacing our SF bug tracker. It looks good, but the principle issue is how to migrate the bugs and their history from SF to Mantis. I'm also interested in seeing if it can be combined well with Drupal, maybe along with Pootle. Any drupalheads out there? Manual: We've got a good unofficial non-free manual/book and several [semi-]official incomplete free manuals. There is discussion about if efforts can be combined to produce a good official free manual. Anyway, I've probably missed something, but I think that covers the pending changes that are percolating. Most of these would benefit from discussion, so we can make sure there is a rough concensus favoring the change - so if you have concerns about any of these changes, now's a good chance to bring 'em up. Yep, i know that Ryan. Docbook is sometimes quite heavy to use. But this is the standard way to do this. All the documentation project use Docbook (see inkscape tutorials for example) because it is precise, XML base, and that we have many commands to transform it in HTML, PDF and many other format. Wouldn't you really like to try again, even if i have to proofread ? I'm also testing some possibilities via OpenOffice since there is a tool to convert ODT to docbook. Atthis time, some tag are missing, but i'm sure we good succeed in this way. hi all, i have a query about the _official_ user docs for inkscape. i am wondering if it is being developed actively at the moment, and if it is, how do i help out? i have found bits of information about it on the wiki, however it refers to the docbook files in the CVS. i cannot seem to find these files in SVN. is the docbook stuff ancient history? if so would it be feasable to use the wiki as a collaboration tool for developing the official user docs more? sorry if this is all in the wiki somewhere, but the details (to me at least) seem a bit sketchy and spread out a bit... cheers, ryanlerch

Hello, I try to add some new Python scripts to Inkscape in a project with my students. We need information where the ".inx"-file interface is described. There are other types than only int, bool, float or string to be passed to the script. But we did not find a description how to. Can anyone give us a hint where to find the file format definition of the ".inx" file and where to find some working examples? 2nd question: If anything is detected to be wrong when the script is running, is there a way to inform the user about it? Artists and designers of all ranges are invited to make a logo to help identify the project. Judging will take place by contributors to the project, Alex Roberts (bovinity), Liftarn, and Zeimusu, who will select the winning logo. The last chance to submit submissions is March 14, 2007 at 11:59 PM PST. After that, the judges will select a logo within five days from the submission closing date. Getting menu items from class Desktop

Hi, Newbie question follows: I'm trying to fix bug #1664790 ("Display mode toggle doesn't update radio button"). Today's the first time I have delved into the Inkscape sources. I've got the hang of how the menu UI portion is generated automatically and how verbs work (more or less). I've also been able to trace my way to the Desktop class's setDisplayModeNormal( ) and setDisplayModeOutline( ) functions which is where I should implement logic to toggle the radio button change for it to happen. Question is, how to get the GTK widget handle for the main menu bar? I couldn't find any helper functions in Desktop nor any in events.cpp TIA, Irfan.

The recent morbid talk of creating a branch for cairo conversion work makes me think, wouldn't an SCM like git be a huge facilitator for such work? In my mind the one thing that makes branching such a negative is SVN. IMHO SVN is branch possible but not branch friendly. I've only used git for a few small (and mostly linear) projects at work. So I don't have a huge base of knowledge to speak from. I know mental has been doing quite a bit of research into the workflow for using git locally in combination with a central SVN repo. He would be much more capable to comment on its suitability for Inkscape. (Hopefully he will summarize his for the rest of us sometime.) One apparent downer is git's level of support for win32. So I thought I'd take a chance to mention a couple of the options in case anyone wants to check them out. 1) git via cygwin. Two major complaints I've heard are: a) that git is slower on cygwin than it is on native unix. Well, of course it is but rarely do you see a comparison with SVN on windows. I did just recently run across the following quote: "Note: At the time of writing, GIT does not run natively on MSWindows platforms. Several projects are underway to port GIT to Windows but they are not complete yet. It is possible to use git on Win32 via Cygwin, but with slightly worse performance (note: v1.4.5 has several performance enhancements on Cygwin) though even on Cygwin GIT is much faster than CVS or SVN." -- http://docs.moodle.org/en/Tracking_Moodle_CVS_with_git b) installing cygwin is complex. Perhaps we could lessen this perceived complexity for our devs by providing a unified package as we do for libraries. I recall seeing a few packages that distribute portions of cygwin like this. In case anyone wants to try, the most detailed description of running git on cygwin that I have found is at http://git.or.cz/gitwiki/WindowsInstall?action=show . 2) mingw git fork. Two different Inkscape SVN freezes

Ok, there are two recent freezes that I've witnessed (one pointed out by Johan). Both occur with current SVN. First, I've got a file (our icons) that with a particular object selected, if you switch tools inkscape freezes up. I will file a bug report and attach file shortly so others can check it out. Johan's is also easy to reproduce. Run Inkscape in GDB on win32 (both of us tested on XP specifically) and select a file from the "open recent" list. It doesn't freeze outside of gdb and doesn't freeze in gdb on linux. So it seems a little strange. Anyone have any thoughts? (other than filing both bugs formally) -Josh

Several improvements make canvas panning and scrolling smoother and more interactive in complex slow-rendering documents: * When panning by the middle mouse button, Inkscape no longer attempts to redraw the canvas while your mouse button is pressed. Any redrawing only happens after you release the mouse. As a result, the newly revealed parts of the canvas are somewhat more "dirty" but the panning is smoother than before, with few if any "hiccups". * Previously, if you start panning with middle button while Inkscape is still redrawing screen in a complex drawing, panning sometimes completely failed or moved canvas just a little step. Now it is guaranteed to pan the canvas all the way from mouse-press point to mouse-release point in any case, even if sometimes it fails to show the intermediate positions. * When pressing and holding Ctrl+arrows to scroll canvas, Inkscape normally accelerates scrolling so that each next scrolling step is bigger than the previous. Previously, in complex drawings this acceleration sometimes got interrupted, which made scrolling annoyingly bumpy and slow. Now this is fixed so that scrolling is smoothly accelerated even in a slow-rendering document. * The default starting speed and acceleration of Ctrl+arrows scrolling are slightly increased. Hello Bryce, I have posted 12 screen shots of increasing complexity here: http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/oaktree/jcb/applets/polymorphappletcaptures.html Sliders modify control point lengths and angles (Mirror, Twist, CP1 and CP2). These are calculated from the turning angle of the turtle. Control point length default is 0.33333 * last distance travelled. My other 2D version is a HyperCard stack written back in the early 1992. This outputs PostScript (Adobe Illustrator 3 file). It generates a host of other shapes (cogs, spirals, shells etc) and uses the same principle of "live" shapes, generated procedurally. Markers - fix for 'none' bug

There was a bug in the recent marker work where markers weren't getting removed from lines if you picked "none". I had disabled the code that makes the 'none' marker work, because doing so prevented an event cascade. So this fixes the event cascade - basically, this temporarily disables the "changed" signal handler when we're updating the marker menus, so the changes don't trigger additional "changed" signals. There is still one bug I know of - if you click on one of the numerical entry boxes on the stroke style page, before clicking the marker dropdown, then when you open the marker dropdown you see two separators rather than 'None' and one separator. But this bug has been around for quite some time. Let me know if you spot any other bugs. Bryce

Addition of fill to Calligraphy tool

Hi guys, I've Modified the calligraphy tool to create a fill shape as well as a stroke shape. The 2 are grouped so they act like one object in selector. Patch is in the tracker, #1666582 still todo: * Need to fix the setting of the styles of the 2 objects, they just get the current style at the minute, want to fill the stroke with the current stroke, fill with the current fill. * Want to put a check box in the toolbar to enable/disable generation of fills, so that people wanting the old way of working can have it still. Its been a long time since i touched the codebase, and I'm very rusty, so would appreciate some code review before this gets commited to svn. comments are welcomed, just cant promise how swift updates will be. Obtaining compiler warnings

Does anybody know a way to neatly catch compiler warnings on windows? I'd like to only see a list of compiler warnings, instead of the complete compiler commandline as it is now. Grip snapping to visible grid lines only

I was just experiencing an issue with grid snapping: I wanted objects to be pixel-aligned, so I turned on a 1px grid with snap. However, Inkscape only draws lines every 10px or so, and this is the snap I end up with. I have to zoom to 800% to be able to get single-pixel snap, which is too close to be able to see what I want to do. I went to report this as a bug but it's already been reported as 1505815 which is marked WONTFIX on the grounds that this is intentional. What's the rationale behind this behaviour? Without wanting to revisit it too much if this has been discussed before, I can think of only one reason why this is beneficial: 1. What you see is what you get. Whereas under my expected behaviour (specified grid was respected) 1. What you specify is what you get. 2. Zoom-independence. 3. Can work at 1:1 and use grids finer than 8px. 3. Everything else I've tried works this way eg. XaraLX, Flash Put another way, would anyone have any objections to re-opening this? Dan

Extension parameters

I wanted to slight modify webbrower_* extensions so that they directly bring to the web page in the relevant language when it exists. I thought the good way to do that would have been to give the address as a translatable parameter that is not set by the user, but I didn't find how to do that, it seems impossible. I guess it is impossible, since there are several extensions for visiting a web page. Am I right ? Do you have an idea to work around my problem ? Maybe using a parameter proposing the different languages to the user ? Romain

Marker menu dynamic updating

I've committed a fix to one of the marker menu bugs. Previously, the marker menu had been split to show markers in the <defs> above the line only if they were non-stock markers. However, the problem happens that if one alters the stock marker in the <defs> section without changing its ID, it doesn't show at all in the menu. Now, the menu shows ALL markers from <defs> above the line, regardless of whether they're stock or not. This obviously has the downside that for people who use a lot of stock markers, the menu will get cluttered, however I suspect that may be a less common use case than we thought initially. Also, a more important underlying change is that in order to do this I've added some svg preview cache code based on code used by the icon renderer. This allows us to render each marker preview once, instead of three times (once for each menu), and avoids performance trouble if the marker menu is dynamically changed. (I needed to dynamically update the marker menus when selecting stock id's to ensure that if you select a stock id, it immediately shows up in the above-the-line markers in all three menus.) This will also eventually help solve a problem where if you have the fill-and-stroke dialog open when switching between two docs with custom markers, it doesn't update properly; I haven't fixed this, but just need to figure out how to hook in with the callback for "document selection changed". (This dynamic marker menu underlying structure is also needed for future anticipated changes to the marker system...) Bryce

Hey, So as we're talking about GSoC I also realized it's time to come up with an idea for a senior project. Here's the one I'm thinking about proposing. I'd love it if anyone has any ideas or suggestions about how to improve it. SVG Crunch SVG is a XML vector graphics format standardized by the W3C for use in the Web. It is currently supported by most major browsers and is increasingly being seen on websites. As it continues to grow in popularity economic pressures will start to come into play. Even though bandwidth has become cheaper, it is still not free. This project is to create a utility to remove excess information in an SVG file to reduce its overall size. Phase One -- Basic XML compression -- There are some basic things that can be done to an XML file to make it smaller. Things like removing spaces and carriage returns. Also renaming name spaces from things like "mathml" to "m". The optimizations are simple but important. At the end of this phase the file should be no different to an XML parser. Phase Two -- SVG Compression -- SVG provides several ways that file size can be reduced as part of the format. These some of these include: using a "pointer tag" (use) to refer to objects that are identical; allowing style to inherit down the XML hierarchy; groups to take style for a set of objects; and many more. These optimizations should be applied to the document in order to reduce the size of the file. At the end of this phase the files should render no differently on an SVG renderer. Phase Three -- Display specific compression -- As a vectored format SVG provides elements that can be rendered at any resolution, but rarely does a graphic on the web need to be zoomed in at 1600%. This phase of the compression should focus on removing the precision of numbers and in some cases removing points that are unnecessary based on a target resolution provided by the user. At the end of this phase the files should look no different to a human at the target resolution. This project will be developed and published as an open source project. There is definite "method to the madness" for making UI changes, but afaik there hasn't been a definitive location for outlining the general guidelines on UI changes. Hey all, I thought I'd write up a quick summary of SCaLE, hopefully everyone else who was there can add to (and correct) what I've put here. -- The Booth -- I was a bit concerned that this year we'd just run into the same people as last year. That was definitely not the case. On the most basic level, I'd say that 50% of the people we talked to hadn't heard of Inkscape. We definitely got the word out there. But, I think there were some other notable conversations. - Both of the companies doing network monitoring are interested in doing network maps using SVG. I thought that was pretty cool. They were talking about SVG even before we talked to them. - We got visits from two people from studios in LA. I don't really believe that either will turn into anything, but it was interesting, and probably good to get buzz into that community. Interestingly, one asked if Inkscape was in RHEL 4, and I didn't know. I talked to the Redhat guys, and they built the package right there. There is now Inkscape for RHEL 4 :) - We met the editor of Linux Gazette, and his wife. Apparently she was needing vector illustration to make the move off of Windows. She was trilled to find a way to move to Linux. - We talked with a guy who works at RPI and wants to remove the Adobe CS from their curriculum and replacing it with Open Source tools. Apparently they don't really teach the tools, as much as they use them to teach about work flow. So each student has to buy the full suite for a minor amount of functionality overall. He's working to change that. - Linux.com stopped by. Their overview was pretty flattering, and now is on the Inkscape site. He asked if I'd do an interview, and I didn't realize it was going to be video. You can now watch me stumble over my words trying to say something insightful. - I did an interview with the booth next to us (everyone else was scared). They hired a 'booth babe' to make a video asking stupid questions of conference attendees. It was cute. But I have to harass John Tabor for giving me misinformation about the whole thing :) -- The BOF -- We had the bird of a feather which went very well. We were a bit shocked that they didn't leave the projector in the room, so Josh wasn't able to show all the artwork he collected from folks to show off Inkscape. John showed a little bit of mapping stuff as we had a good group of people huddling around his laptop. There were several people who just wanted to know more about Inkscape, but there were some experienced users also. In particular, there was a guy from Ticketmaster that uses Inkscape to prototype websites. Overall, it was a good crowd and discussion, and we could have definitely gone longer than the hour we were allotted. -- The Talk -- I gave a talk about Inkscape Extensions, with the goal of inspiring new developers to jump on board. I was really worried that it was going to go long, but I was actually about 10 minutes short. They said that it was going to be recorded, but it was not. Josh has some video, but the audio isn't good. Hopefully some post processing will help. Whew. After a not-too-fun delay, I'm finally back. I got a dev environment going based on Darwinports too, so I'm finally on GTK+ 2.10.7 instead of the 2.6 that Fink had stalled at. And for my first large commit, I fixed some DOS line-ends that had come around when I wasn't looking. I just wanted to point that out in case someone had been working in one of those files and gets some conflicts.

I just looked through the last two months of the Cairo Mailing list. I found it encouraging that even though we don't have any Inkscape advocates working explicitly on perfecting Cairo's PDF output, they continue to move along and make advances. When we get around to fixing the gradient rasterization issue, I think it will feel really nice to a continuous (no matter how gradual) stream of PDF enhancements for free. Just a little extra encouragement, if anyone has the desire to look into this. In previous versions, Inkscape didn't allow you to group a single object. Yet in some cases, this operation is useful (for example, to blur the clipped edged of an object). So now this limitation is removed. Let me know if you find any problem with this. NEW: batch export and slicing

* Batch export: The Bitmap Export dialog (Ctrl+Shift+E) got a new checkbox, Batch export all selected objects. This checkbox is available when two or more objects are selected. If it is checked, instead of exporting selection as a whole, Inkscape exports each selected object separately into its own PNG file. This uses each object's export hints (i.e. export filename and DPI) if they are remembered from a previous export; otherwise, the filename is created from the object ID and the DPI is 90 pixels per inch. Caution: Unlike regular export, batch export overwrites all existing PNG files without warning. This makes it possible to implement all kinds of image slicing and automated export scenarios. For example, if you are working on a web site design, you can create a separate "export" layer. In that layer, "slice" your web page image into separate areas by creating invisible rectangles with no fill and no stroke. Select each rectangle (by Tab/Shift+Tab, or by switching to Outline mode where even an invisible rectangle can be selected by clicking on its outline) and export it into the corresponding filename (which gets saved as that object's export hint). After that, if you do any changes to your graphics, it's very easy to reexport all the slices: just switch to the "export" layer, select all in that layer (Ctrl+A), and export with the Batch export selected objects checkbox on. This functionality replaces the "groups to pngs" extension which I'm going to remove. If you know of any reason why it should stay, please speak up. -- bulia byak Inkscape. Hi Folks, I would like to have pstricks export prompt me to 'export text as path'. This would allow me to export text as text - and hence use latex annotations in my inkscape drawing. I've checked out and compiled inkscape 0.45+devel on my suse 10.1 machine (64bit). There is apparently some loss of functionality (bug?) in pstricks export since my previous version of inkscape: pstricks doesn't appear to be including text during output. I can reproduce this problem by: 1. start inkscape. 2. use the text tool and type some text. 3. save to filename as pstricks. 4. examine the filename to see it is empty apart from headers. I appreciate that this is the devel package - but thought that if this section of the code was currently in development, some kind sole might give my give my feature request some consideration at the same time! best regards, richard,

Stroke color

Hi devel, If I remember well, when I was using CorelDraw, a right click on a color of the palette was the action to change the color of the stroke of an object. I find it more logical than Shift+click, since you have two things to paint, and two buttons on the mouse ; and why Shift rather than Ctrl or Alt ? So I thought it would be a good idea to enable right click to paint the stroke, since it isn't used. Of course, we would keep shift + click until another better use is found, since many users are used to this. If you think it is a relevant feature, then I would agree to implement it. It would be my first coding contribution, an occasion to put the hands in the code, and learn about glib, which I don't know at all. What do you think ? Romain

So, this is a major component of the project and RedHat has developer(s) working on this. Offline one developer asked me who wants to be in the discussion about this. I connected up their interest with discussion about inkboard, since the device has mesh networking, they want to have collaborative sketching/drawing...cool! NEW: GNOME-VFS from Open/Save/Export

I'm trying out the bulia-style announcement. I applied a simple patch that allows us to use non-local URIs in addition to local paths via Gnome-VFS by using GTK file chooser on the Open, Save ___, and Export dialogs. This means you can use webdav shares, samba mounts, sftp/ssh shares, now...basically, any backend that gnome-vfs supports, we should be able to use. So, in effect, one could work on files from a bluetooth phone filesystem (if so inclined ;). Before, Gnome-VFS support, Bryce setup as a configure-time option, --with-gnome-vfs, which appears to be turned on by default (even without the configure-time option). And, one could open any URI that gnome-vfs supported from the commandline. So, now we have the added capability So, please test this out. Also, I'm curious if/how this works on Windows and Mac OS X. Sorry to forward a few of these to the inkscape-devel list, but I think its an interesting issue for us to deal with, especially as so many open mobile/ubiquitous devices are on the horizon, plus, it helps us track down memory leaks, etc. Mental, this seems like it might interest you a bit? Also, could some others comment. What are the top five ways we can practically lower these memory requirements? Inkscape 0.45 crashes during the start on Mac OS X 10.3.9.

Hi there, The problem is already mentioned in the subject. For starters, I must admit, that I never had problems with X11 applications, including previous relases of Inkscape. I am using the ibook G4, so it is not related to the Intel architecture. When I start Inkscape 0.45, I have a messeage about long time need for caching the fonts etc., and after clicking "OK" the Inkscape disappears from Dock, and in Console I can see following output: bash: no job control in this shell dyld: /Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/bin/inkscape-bin Undefined symbols: /Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib undefined reference to _FT_Get_BDF_Property expected to be defined in /usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib /Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib undefined reference to _FT_Load_Sfnt_Table expected to be defined in /usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib Some other people have the same problem on their Macs, and the bugs have been reported on bugtracker here: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php? func=detail&aid=1654068&group_id=93438&atid=604306 and here: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php? func=detail&aid=1652913&group_id=93438&atid=604306 Please, fix this bug ASAP, or find some remedy, if this is caused by local settings.

I committed the patch by Jasper which implements a faster blur algorithm, so now the Gaussian blur must be noticeably faster in the SVN trunk. Everyone using gaussian blur, please test the new code with regard to: - any especially bad artefacts? (as before, lowering quality in Preferences > Filters introduces some artefacts, but they look reasonable, I think even nicer than with the old algorithm) - how much faster it is on your images? (test on different zooms and with export; we need some estimates to put into the release notes) - is the range of quality/speed settings adequate? or would you like to have a still faster/lower quality step? - any other problems? -- bulia byak Inkscape. Here are some things that were added to SVN since 0.45 but not yet announced here: * Smart redraw: With complex images and/or on slow computers, you may have noticed that Inkscape redraws the screen image in horizontal strips, and these strips are painted sequentially top to bottom. Now this direction is automatically changed based on where your mouse cursor is. In particular, if mouse is closer to the bottom of the area to redraw, strips will be painted in the bottom-to-top order. This significantly improves the responsiveness and interactivity in some situations. For example, when you are node-editing the bottom part of a complex path, the entire path needs to be redrawn on each change, but now this redraw starts from the bottom and therefore the you see the effect of your changes at once - i.e. while screen redraw may still lag behind your mouse movement, this lag is less noticeable. * If the selected object(s) have gradient in fill or stroke, the selected style indicator in the bottom-left corner of the editing window now displays a live gradient preview prefixed by R or L to indicate Radial or Linear gradients (instead of displaying "L Gradient" or "R Gradient" text labels as before). Also, this and other similar widget now use italic font face to indicate None and bold to indicate Unset. * In Gradient tool, when you have one of the gradient handles selected, its style (color and opacity) is reflected by the selected style indicator (left of the statusbar) and the Fill&Stroke dialog. Previously, opacity of a gradient handle was reflected as fill-opacity and stroke-opacity; now it is reflected as master opacity (the "O:" spinbutton in the selected style indicator, the "Master opacity" slider in Fill&Stroke). Hi, I am needing the ability to make a layer non printable. Can some one point me to the right area in the code to possibly activate this feature? I did some searching and found the attribute sodipodi:nonprintable here http://inkscape.modevia.com/doxygen/html/attributes_8cpp-source.php on line 00037 but it does not seem to work on a layer or graphic when I use that attribute in the xml editor. How can I activate this attribute?

Inkscape on OLPC?

Heya, one of my top priority projects at CC now is OLPC. I talked with the pres. of software and content, Walter Bender today and I intro'd myself and mentioned Inkscape, and he immediately said, "Oh cool, I use Inkscape all the time. Want to port it to Sugar?" "Sugar is the core of the OLPC Human Interface. Its goal is to turn the Laptop into a fun, easy to use, social experience that promotes sharing and learning." http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Sugar Has anyone tried to build Inkscape with Sugar? Is anyone interested in doing this? It is a cool thing to have happen, as they are needing a drawing program, and this could help us springboard into the process of refactoring and lib'ification more, as the device has memory/space limits and a targeted demographic, kids. Build System

How many of us understand how autoconf and friends work? How many are able to effectively edit and maintain the build process? I spent a few days during the 0.45 dev cycle working to add soft linking for libssl. Most of my time was spent in total confusion. And when I asked around no one among us was able to give much help. I find this a little scary. And I wonder if there isn't a different build system out there that more of us could become proficient in. For lib2geom Verbalshadow decided to give CMake a try. I'm not sure what led to this decision. I think he looked at Scons and a few others first. Maybe because a huge project like KDE is using it. I found out recently that our sister project Scribus is also switching to CMake. On SourceForge, we've reached the #2 most active project slot. Inkscape 0.45 has already been downloaded over 25,000 times, not counting the .exe package (traditionally the most popular). We're getting a bit of an upsurge in bug reports, so if you have some spare minutes over the next few days, make a habit to peek at the newest bugs in the bug tracker (sort by Open Date with state==Open). I have noticed that FOSS is basically an "anarchist" way of developing software. Some "natural order" is required. Fractal art is also "anarchist", but it's beautiful. Imagine a base InkScape cross-platform package which depends solely on GTK. Now visualize each "fork" as a flavour. A fork in the tree is one for the 3 most used platforms: First Desktop (Macintosh) Free Desktop (GNOME, KDE, the "light desktops") Propietary Desktop (Windows) that's 3 main forks. but let them happen. just keep the same versioning (ie: no preference among platforms). The Adobe folks said something wise, "use the software of your choice in the platform of your choice". Let's grow up, propietary software was never "evil" and there's a triad of main platforms. A triad of main flavours. Each platform has it's own "quirks", but that make each unique. I propose a 4th platform: ZenSUI It's experimental, based on pure OpenGL 2.0, with "legacy dependancies" of GTK and Qt. It will be paid software libre, because I don't want to stop eating. It will NOT use either the desktop methaphor nor the 3D ui metaphor. It will be a 2D, Unix-only, OpenGL-based user interface. It will be Simple, Transparent, Consistent User Interaction (a SUI not a GUI, and not a CLI) It will allow configurability for the 3 "main personas": developer.designer.user and it will use less than 1 GB of memory in a flash drive connected through eSATA (that's the base "ZenSUI computer"). ZenSUI will use an "information metaphor"; it's information centric (no difference between local and external, the user should know that). It will be the first peaceful-anarchist-corporation*1 of 150*2 members or less. And I, as founder, am the first member. There's room for 149 eager, talented software and interaction producers. The name of this community is ZenSUI.Net (not the generic .Net escuse of a language that made Microsoft). Hi all 2 years ago i opened and inkscape account on openusability. Nothingimportant happened there until last weeks. A usability student wants to work on inkscape. We have 2 or 3 weeks before she is ready to work on it, and then make proposal and studies during 3 months. We, me and bryce, already made some proposals to her, but anyone can send me more. It can be usefull one day ;) Plus, we may need some help to implement UI proposal. With some help at the beginning i guess i could work alone with her at the end, any contributor are welcome. cedric

At the weekend I'm down to give a talk about SVG and Inkscape at my local LUG (Hampshire, UK). Several members of the LUG have expressed an interest, in that they don't know Inkscape but they've heard lots of good things about it. Videos of the talks are recorded and made available through our website and on Google videos. I was just wondering if anyone had any insightful comment they might wish me to convey (about SVG or Inkscape), or perhaps a favourite tip for using Inkscape? I'd be particularly interested in anything which might leave people with the urge to install themselves a copy and have a go. I'd also like to take this opportunity to congratulate everybody for their hard work in getting 0.45 out of the door. Dan

win32 official packages update

I see that some archives for win32 were uploaded last night. Great! I've removed the pre2 exe from the dl page because I think it could do much more harm than good. I hope it being there didn't disuade our win32 packager from uploading an exe for 0.45.0. Oh btw, who is making these win32 packages?!? :-) It would be really great coordinate with you on the matter. There are some win32 packages stuck in the upload queue too. One pre2 build from one of Bryce's attempts. And I notice a 0.45 zip. Hi all, To know each other a little better I propose to ad a section of "who made Inkscape" @ www.inkscape.org Since it's Free and Open Source Software (aka FOSS), we don't "get paid". More or less, I don't believe in an ego (read Minsky for more info about the buddhist concept of no-self/anata)... BUT one of the ways of "getting paid" in the hackers (as in software developer of software libre) world is to: be recognized as good software developers. ie: I can put the following line: "human-machine interface software developer of inkscape" in my resume (Curriculum Vitae) to get a job... since (I) "have the habit of eating" ^_^ I propose that we elect some developers and put one 512x512px mini-blog image (at most). I chose to be the last entry (in this year, 2007 CE). ...I don't care about ego. (...flam3s over the Net pass through emptyness, aka insults to me are ignored so don't even try =P). This images can link to our personal websites... etc ...we lose ~75% of communication when chosing "plain text communication" instead of "real-world personal in-the-same-place communication" so, any questions about this simple idea? -- http://www.zensui.org

Envelope extension fix

Inkscape 0.45 features a new Gaussian Blur SVG filter. Sponsored by Google's Summer of Code program, Gaussian Blur allows you to softly and naturally blur any Inkscape objects, including shapes, text, and images. This enables a wide range of photorealistic effects: arbitrarily shaped shades and lights, depth of field, drop shadows, glows, etc. Also, blurred objects can be used as masks for other objects to achieve the "feathered mask" effect. Numerous other new features, enhancements to existing features, and bug fixes have been included. A history dialog allows you to browse your change history. Many new extension effects are added including Pattern along Path and Color Effects. There are performance improvements to rendering speed, on the order of 2-3% in general, and up to 5-10% for drawings using heavy transparency and/or radial gradients. Compositing quality is also improved through the removal of banding seen in gradients. The Inkscape community invites anyone to contribute to the project. The project is now working on the upcoming 0.46 release which will focus on the initial stages of adding SVG animation support, increasing the apps PDF functionality, and other refactoring tasks. For all the use I get out of inkscape, I'd like to pitch in with this. I figure it would be a good way to get my feet wet, and I've been hawking this list long enough. The most coding I've done is some really basic php scripting, but I'm somewhat familiar with the basics, so if someone would tell me what to do, I'd be happy to pitch in. Crash handler locks X

Sometimes Inkscape crashes while performing an operation that grabs the X pointer. It displays the crash handler window but the Ok button can't be clicked. In fact the entire X session is locked. I have to log into a tty and kill either Inkscape or the WM to be able to continue. Of course we don't crashes to happen, but I wonder if calling XUngrabPointer() in the crash handler would prevent them freezing my desktop? Dan

Patch from Debian has been applied to SVN HEAD: "Custom default templates can now be specified per-user. Start a new document, make any customizations you wish - such as changing the paper size - and save to ~/.inkscape/templates/default.svg. Johan: I noticed that as a result of your patch here: http://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/inkscape/inkscape/trunk/src/exte… now Inkscape always saves file with sodipodi:modified="true" because you moved the omod->save before that attribute is set to NULL instead of after as before. Was there any reason for it? It looks wrong, sodipodi:modified should never be saved I think. I fixed it by moving the NULLing of that one attribute before the actual save. Dropper tool broken in 0.45pre and trunk?

Hi, In both trunk and 0.45 the dropper tool appears to be broken. Steps: 1. Remove preference file. 2. Draw square (it should be blue). 3. Draw circle (it should be red), leave selected. 4. Select dropper tool. 5. Move cursor over square and rectangle, note that the status bar is not updated, reads #000000 alpha 0 if Pick Alpha is checked, #ffffff if Pick alpha is not checked. 6. Click on square, circle turns white (or black of Pick alpha is checked and Set alpha not checked). If it does work, try picking the color from a few more objects. It worked on some of the object I tried after doing a make clean, make install, but failed on others. I didn't see a pattern to which ones worked and which ones didn't. Additional observation: if the dropper tool is click-dragged it works on those objects where simply clicking doesn't. Tested with Fedora Core 6. Note that 0.44.1 works as expected. Tav

LGM 2007 - Press Release - Spanish translation help

Hello all, We are a bit in an empasse with respect to the Spanish translation of our press release (http://create.freedesktop.org/wiki/index.php/Conference_2007_Press_Release) I want to ask if someone has the time to translate the first part of the press release (not the second with the descriptions of the programs). It would be even better if we had a list of Spanish computer and graphic art magazines (email addresses) to send the translations to. We want to fire up the press release on sunday night, after the official LGM website is online. I really apologise for asking that lately, but I really thought someone else had taken care of it. Scheduling of 0.45 final?

Hi all (especially translators), It appears we're very near the time to do the final release of 0.45, so it would be good for us to schedule when to tag the final official 0.45.0. If I understand, there are no further code bug fixes planned for this release, but there is still some work related to translations. Is there anything else we are waiting on besides this? E.g., documentation or packaging fixes? For any remaining work (including translations), can anyone that needs more time please tell me when you plan to be finished? Then we can evaluate when to set the release dates. Regarding translations, it looks like some string issues have been identified and discussed. It's a little unclear what the status of these are, but I found a bug item where we could collect all of this information for the release: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1645093&group_id=… Please, if you know of untranslatable strings, spelling errors, or other such issues that still are not fixed in the release branch, can you please add them to this bug? Gaussian Blur filter

Hi, I've been playing with the Gaussian Blur filter for updating my book and have a couple of comments: 1. In the release notes it states that one can achieve a different blur in the vertical and horizontal directions by first stretching a path, then blurring it, and finally shrinking it back. This appears to work only if the path does not have a "transform" attribute after it is stretched. The SVG standard includes a provision for separate x and y blurring and Inkscape seems to have the code in nr_filter-gaussian.cpp to handle this; this seems to be a more natural way to achieve the desired result. A second blur slider could be added. Or what about using "Blur Handles" that function like the rectangle tool corner radius handles? 2. The term "Blur Radius" in the release notes should be defined. A look at the code reveals that it is the Standard Deviation of the Gaussian. This definition maybe has only meaning to the mathematically astute but one should be able to come up with a meaningful definition. 3. Why is a filter object created (or renamed) every time a blurred object is moved? The filter parameters don't change. Why would the filter object ever be renamed? This leads to the general question of how Inkscape handles SVG files that come from other sources. A number of people have complained about Inkscape mangling their files and I think that this is one example of that. Tav

It seems like overkill (in typical AI fashion) to have SEVEN tools to accomplish these various (but somewhat similar) tasks. My first question is, do we add this functionality to an existing tool or create a new "distortion" tool? I believe (easily) loadable sets of options, presets, and brushes will really help foster more community contribution. Some people may not know how to contribute, but, they may be very artistic and willing to give back. This seems to be the case for every other program with loadable brushes and such. I'm not married to any of the above ideas or even believe that this is the best way to go, for the most part I'm just throwing a bunch of ideas out there to stimulate more conversation about this. :) Also, is it my imagination or does this seem like a prime candidate for the live path effects? I will add items from the discussion to a wiki page once the conversation has built up a little more (and other thoughts/ideas are out there). -Josh

Inkscape roadmap for 0.46 and beyond

Hi all, I think I've mostly finished with the reworking of the roadmap. Thank you to everyone who has provided ideas or critique: http://wiki.inkscape.org:8080/wiki/index.php/Roadmap This shouldn't be taken as gospel, of course. It's likely that tasks will need to be resorted as we move forward, but I think this gives us a starting point to plan around. Two factors I've tried to account for in the prioritization are first, that we have a goal to achieve SVG Mobile (aka SVG Tiny) support by version 0.50, and second that developers are going to want to work on separate aspects of Inkscape in parallel, rather than everyone focusing on one area for one release. Thus I've added categories in each section to roughly define what these different areas are, and have attempted to avoid putting too many tasks in any one area. Please feel free to re-prioritize or elaborate on any of the items here. It would especially be nice if we could more distinctly call out lower level tasks for some of the higher level task descriptions, so that new developers can more easily find things defined well enough for them to work on. Also, linking to mail archives or wiki pages with more info about the tasks would be quite helpful! If you adjust priorities, it would probably be better to move things *later* than earlier. There's no problem with planning to do things far in the future but actually getting them done early! But if we put too many things into 0.46, it could get a bit overwhelming. One of the things that's gotten really clear is that if we really do want to get SVG Mobile support by 0.50, then we're going to need to start thinking about cutting ground on Animation. Fortunately the spec only requires "Basic Animation support", with a subset of the features, so it sounds pretty doable if we give ourselves plenty of time and do some really good brain storming on it. For 0.46, we could focus on conceptual definition - what we want, how it should work, and so forth. I know a lot of people have good ideas on this, so it's probably going to be mostly a matter of getting those ideas recorded and organized, so future prototypers have something to inspire and guide their work. pre2: drop-down lists in extensions on windows broken

I cleared all previous installs and reinstalled pre2 on this winXP machine, but it does not help: in Effects > Generate from path > Pattern along path, the two drop-down lists are empty and cannot be opened. Alan, thank you for pointing this out! Finally something neat from illustrator. :-) This is a bit different than node sculpting. It doesn't require a node selection. There is a cursor with a center mark and an area delimited by a larger circle. As the user clicks and drags the paths are updated in real time. only the area within the larger circle is updated. And the amount of update seems to taper off toward the edge. There are various effects which can be applied to the current path. My take: we could do something like this by partially applying our non existent live effects to a path within an adjustable sphere of influence. Aaron Spike

Crash with bitmap font

I have found that inkscape crashes when opening file dialog (File->Open, Save, ...) if sans-serif font is a bitmap font. I did tests with freetype 2.2.[01], fontconfig 2.4.2, pango 1.15.5 and inkscape 4.43 and svn, but this is old bug. I have tracked down using gdb that this happens when application calls 'pango_ft2_font_get_face(pFont)' in function 'font_instance::InitTheFace()' in file 'src/libnrtype/FontInstance.cpp'. This happens not every time but only with bad 'pFont' parameter, so application can start but crashes with 'internal error' when opening file dialog. It doesn't write to console anything usefull. To test this, in file '~/.fonts.conf' add <alias> <family>sans-serif</family> <prefer> <family>Helvetica</family> </prefer> </alias> in '<fontconfig></fontconfig>' section (and chech that 'fc-match sans' says 'Helvetiva').

Hello, my name is Federico Miliacca and I'm a student of engineering at the University of Roma "La Sapienza" in Italy. I'm to leading a bachelor thesis about the Animated Vectorial Graphics under INKSCAPE. I would have to realize a module that modernizes in real time the color of the edge and the background of the present objects on the canvas of job. The objects will have to be simple rectangles or circles. In the days it passes I have analyzed to the code source and I have characterized many interesting rows (repr-io.cpp - attribute-record.h - share.cpp - etc) in order to understand as INKSCAPE manages the rescue of the objects and to understand here like capturing the same objects from the memory. I asked if you could kindly clear to me as INKSCAPE represents the objects in memory and which rows are use you for this rapresentation. Then I would want to know what you can advise to me in order to realize this module that must read to the label of an object or its id and modify edge and background reading the data from a DBMS. Thanks all you for the aid that me give, if succeed to resolve this my doubt, can continue with the my thesis and complete the my course of bachelor. unclumping

Hello, I'm Romain, born in France. I'd like to contribute to this great project, so I just subscribed to translator and devel (I study computer science), and started working :) I am working on translating fuzzy messages, and I found the message "Unclump tiled clones". I figured out that it was the message corresponding to undo pressing the "Unclump" button when making tiled clones. But when I try this button, the clones become closer and closer, that's quite different from "spreading out", isn't it ? Did I miss something or is it a mistake in the implementation of the unclumping process ? Maybe I didn't understand what clumping is ? Thanks for your help, Romain

Hello all, LGM2007 is about to be launched in full force with PR and so forth and I'm hopeful that someone from Inkscape-land would step-up to help be the contact point for LGM2007 activity for Inkscape. I'm locking down Open Clip Art Library and helping with the conference, so want to get someone else involved with mobilizing the troops and trying to get as many Inkscape users and developers to Montreal May 4 - 6, 2007. Bob, can you be my personal hero? That was perfect! (...looking around office for laurels...) Sorry, the only ivy I have here is a dried out one... I had tried recompiling gtk to a lower version just a bit ago, again to no avail. Then I moved "preferences.xml" to "bob" and it worked like a charm. Sweet! I'll let you know if it continues to do this intermittently in the future as it has in the past.
