more gradient options

Hi, I spent some time to find out what would SVG gradients future would look like since users would appreciate more gradients options than just linear and radial. We have multiply RFEs that are related to this issue. According to http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG2Reqs/ "SVG may include more types of gradient elements. Potential gradient elements include conical, rectangular, Gouraud shading, triangle mesh, Coons patch and shaped fill (with gradient offsets determined by the distance from the edge of the shape). [SVG 2.0]" So, more gradient options is currently considered for SVG 2.0. Currently even 1.2 is not ready, which means we might have more gradient options only in 3-4 years. I'm curious if we can live with it next 3-4 years or if we could somehow let SVG developers know we need it in SVG 1.2. What do you think? Alexandre

I do not like the idea of zipping the files, it's not svg once it's saved and it's just getting around the problem rather than facing the clarity issues with linking/embedding images. admitidly the option would be good for prof's but I'd expect them to know the tool. I don't really care about what the user 'should' be doing, that is totaly the wrong way to think about users (and it's an attitude that kills linux too) I think we should make it clear what the options are, regardless of what your personal bias or the way to arrange the options in terms of menu's/option boxes, properties. We should have it arranged so the user does not even have to think about adding an image or linking an image and the way you arange the options will reinforce to the user the way in which these work. The problem of users thinking that inkscape is broken because it links to images because of the bias of InDesign profs should be dealt with in a way that serves all our needs but does not 'preach' to the users on how they should go about their work. -- #::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::# #::.. http://www.doctormo.co.uk/ ..::# #::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::#

I totally agree with the points raised by Eric, adding my points that with copy/paste of image date (not a file name or href) then it would be dangerous to create a new file instead of embedding (user does not know what is being done). also the options in Erics post to do with changing between linked and embedded would take care of anyone who wants to paste linked images, handing the option to the user is always more useful, although I suspect most linkers would want to select the file or D&D it. As for copy/paste filename that should be handled as a link leaving the option to embed to the image properties. Drag and Drop should work the same as the OS, so embed normally, link when [ctrl] is held down (or how ever the os deals with it) perhaps changing the icon to show the diference. Information should be provided so when an image is selected it should say on the status bar: Relative/Direct Linked Image: [href/dir] or Embedded Image: [size] [type]. These are points to consider when improving the user interaction with external images. Best Regards, Martin Owens PS. Inkscapers, Should inkscape refuse to load a file that includes an <image element which references the svg file itself? I don't see anything in the svg spec about how you're supposed to exit their (accidentally enabled?) recursion and inkscape 0.43 runs to 1.3GB of ram very quickly (I'm not brave enough today to see if it goes all the way to the OS barrier, but I don't see any signs that it wouldn't.) I'm not sure I understand what you mean, but if it's something that can allow objects to be edited in scope of the object but also allows those objects to be displayed. I now know alot about xml/svg dom and objects but my C is still out of date, I should get back into it and help out with the coding. Barcode svgism

If I wanted to modify inkscape to include not just the ability to add barcodes but also the ability to edit them when desired but also save then in a way which does not diminish the editing abilities... I was thinking of saving both the grouped standard svg data which makes up the barcode (so it could be rendered in any standard svg viewer) but also the extra information as an inkscape svg extention which allows one to edit the barcode again when the page is loaded or even print with printers that allow barcode instructions (more effect). I created two new modules in the subversion repository. Both of these are because Bryce has been bothering me for months to add them :) Now as a project to learn SVN/SVK I have! -- inkscape_marketing http://svn.sourceforge.net/viewcvs/inkscape/inkscape_marketing/trunk/ This is a place for all marketing materials that are used in Inkscape promotion. Currently I put all the presentations and fliers that I've done. I also put the trifold brochure done by MrDocs in Scribus in there. I hope that others will put their presentations, articles, fliers, etc in there also. -- inkscape_testfiles http://svn.sourceforge.net/viewcvs/inkscape/inkscape_testfiles/trunk/ These are a bunch of files that I've used in Inkscape testing in the past. Mostly they are weird filenames/formats for testing extensions. Other contributions to the collection are welcomed. --Ted

I can confirm that Inkscape fails to start on Mac OS X 10.4.4 This applies both to the current version (package from the Inskscape site) and the older version supplied by Fink. If any one actually has had inskcape start fully on OS X 10.4.4 please report. This does not seem to be a "prebinding" isse. Inkscape seems to partially start, by its window never opens. Inkscape worked ok in OSX 10.4.3 Duncan

Duplicate /js tree

Hi, all, I don't know why a duplicate /js directory appeared after the migration, but of course it is unnecessary. I am removing the one in /extension/internal/scripts. This is because Perl and Python in that directory are embedded via SWIG, which doesn't seem to support Javascript anymore. JS more properly belongs with /dom anyway, where is is being embedded directly. I did a make after this delete with no problems. If anyone has a problem, let me know, or feel free to hack the Makefile_insert thingy for it. Thanks to <rwst> for telling me about this. bob

Dev Group: When I work with SVG, I generate as much of it as I can, then I hand edit. I use a lot of tools while I'm doing this. I was a draftsman ages ago, I'm a spec author, and I'm very fussy. I've written a few graphics viewers and editors and use most of the available ones from time to time. So I'm a pretty educated user, I don't have much patience for tools that seem broken. I find the InkScape UI to be intuitive (for me anyway) and a pleasure to use. I hate reading docs, and I haven't read any of yours yet. I did look at them though, they look great, and the ability to experiment with features right in the help docs is a killer app. FWIW, I just felt like dropping a line to say that you're doing great work, a huge asset to the SVG community. -- Cheers! I've been pondering the object style minibar, and come up with a variation on the current idea. It's not a huge difference. Basically fill and stroke get their own square areas, and stroke is a thick outline rather than a solid box. That way it's immediately clear which is which. The boxes are divided diagonally -- the upper right side of each box is the paint with full opacity, and the lower left side is the paint with the actual opacity, over a checkerboard. The absence of a fill or stroke would be represented by the traditional red-on-white slash, and probably unset by a question mark or something (to match the fill and stroke dialog). I think I'd also like to see the traditional red-and-white slash in the fill and stroke dialog as well... There's a mock-up attached. Comments/critiques? -mental

I can see it is indeed the rendering issue I suspected; the hairline is an artifact of an antialiasing technique used by Inkscape and many other vector graphics renderers. Essentially, a shape partially covering a pixel is simulated by making that pixel semi-transparent. This looks acceptable in most cases, but there are a few cases it behaves badly for -- exactly adjacent edges, for example. Here's the deal: when the border between the two shapes doesn't fall exactly on the boundary between pixels (this is why zoom or scrolling can make a difference), you end up with one shape covering part of a pixel, and the other shape covering the remainder. Shape A: Shape B: +---+---+ +---+---+ |AAA|...| |...|BBB| |AAA|...| |...|BBB| +---+---+ +---+---+ Obviously, if we overlap these, we should get a pixel whose color is 50% A and 50% B, right? +---+---+ |AAA|BBB| |AAA|BBB| +---+---+ Well... problem is that by the time they're combined, the renderer has already flattened these partially-covered pixels into flat pixels with transparency (alpha). The information about which portions of the pixel are covered by which colors is lost. Using only the alpha information, if you composite A at 50% alpha, and B at 50% alpha, you get a pixel whose color is 25% the background color, 25% A, and 50% B (assuming B is "above" A in the stack). Hence, a one-pixel seam of 25% background color shows through... There are better antialiasing methods available which don't exhibit this problem, but they are less often used because they are generally slower (so are likely to see the problem with other renderers too). We can't really do anything about how it'll appear in other renderers, but Inkscape should probably implement one of the better antialiasing methods as a special "high-quality" rendering mode. -mental

Hi All, Trying to compile Inkscape, using MEPIS version 3.4-2, (which is the most current version). I managed to install the libpng and also zlib but then on trying once again to configure I am told that libgc is needed. Hi, is anyone else having trouble using the sourceforge patch tracker? I'm trying to upload an updated translation but I keep getting "forgotten" by SF. When I log in I can perfectly access and edit my personal details, but when I go to the Inkscape project page and try to upload a patch I keep getting the warning that I must log in and I can't upload a patch as anonymous user. Should I send the file to the list? Arpad? compiling Inkscape

Hi All, Trying to compile Inkscape, using MEPIS version 3.4-2, (which is the most current version). I managed to install the libpng and also zlib but then on trying once again to configure I am told that libgc is needed. I downloaded and unzipped these files (binaries, no?) but what do I do with them? I am kind of new at this. Can anyone help? I have used Inkscape in Windows but want to migrate. Thanks so much.

Problem with Snapping/new Document Properties pannel

Happy New Year to everybody and let 2006 be the year when Inkscape rules! I recently tested the new document properties pannel on mac os X. I think I am a bit late for that but I liked better the first one (with frames) because it was more compact even if it was not HIG compliant. Would it be possible to have the metadata tab scrollable and the others more compact so that the dialog is smaller. I keep this one open very frequently to change snapping settings and I think it would be really nice to have it smaller. Another problem is with snapping and the freehand and bezier tools: snapping to grid seems to be always on for these tools as long as the grid is displayed and whatever the status of snapping is in the Document Properties pannel (even before the it is changed). Is it the desired behaviour? If it is it should be the same for all tools and it does not seem to be the case. Finally, the current distinction between "screen pixels" and "px units" is not really clear to me. what are px units? 1 px unit = 1 grid unit? may be it could be explained a bit better if it is to be kept. Thank you in advance for considering this. I would happily fill a bug report for the second problem if it is necessary. JiHO. PS: for testing purposes the new document preferences pannel is in the last two dev builds for mac os X (24 december and 4 january). btw, is there no way to have the downloads for these builds mirrored and handled by sourceforge? because the download rate is awfully low and the download fails very often.

I am using Windows ME to try to load INKSCAPE 0.43-2 after installation - but it crashes. ODG format?

Does anyone know how well we support the Open Document - Graphics (ODG) format? Is there an ODG<->SVG converter? ODG is part of the OpenDocument Format used by OpenOffice. There's a listing of apps that support it here, and it'd sure be nice if we could get Inkscape listed there. arcs/elliptical arcs in path data

Inkscapers, I just noticed that inkscape uses elliptical arcs in its path data (not if you draw a path, only if you draw an ellipse -- but it uses the <path> element rather than an <ellipse> element I guess because <ellipse> cannot represent rotated ellipses or elliptical arcs.) However, it seems that any sort of union or offset on these ellipses causes them to be converted to bezier curves. (Simplify seems to also convert them.) Xar only supports bezier curves in the path data, so this would have to be converted. It looks like postscript conversion has a similar issue in that its arcto does not support ellipses. >From the info that I've been able to find, an ellipse can only be approximated with a quadric bezier curve. Is that correct? Can anyone please give me some hints as to whether the inkscape source has anything that would be generically usable for converting ellipses to bezier? I've been digging through the source starting with extension/internal/ps-out.cpp and it appears to be leading me to ps.cpp, but I think I missed the conversion. Page properties - size errors

Hi, I'm running cvs version of Inkscape 0.43 and I'm having trouble wtih the paper size. When I create a new document I usually use A4 paper size. My default units are mm, and according to the Document properties an A4 sheet of paper is 248,03 x 350,79 mm. This is incorrect, should be 210 x 279 mm. When I accept this setting and return to the main window I create a vertical guideline at 0mm, which goes correctly to the left edge, and another guideline at 210mm, which goes correctly to the right edge. Strange... On the other hand horizontal guidelines go wrong; a hor. guide at 0 mm goes correctly to the bottom edge, but a guide at 279mm goes way below the top edge. Another curious thing is that, although it uses 248,03 x 350,79 mm as the size in mm for A4 when I change the units to cm, it sets the page size to 21,26 x 30,07 cm. It didn't convert correctly. How to reproduce this: - Open a new document. - Open "Document Properties" (Shift+Ctrl+D) - Set page size to A4 - Set units to mm (note the width and height) - Set units to cm (note the width and height) If this is a know "feature" I'll wait for it's solution, otherwise I'll be happy to file a bug. font not working

Hey guys! I've a font consisting of 18 styles... it's in pfb as well as afm, pfm and inf format. I've not clue, which files I actually need, but I think the pfbs are the ones, because they have a preview :) Anyways, when trying to use them in Inkscape I see the list with all the different styles, right as one would expect, on selecting the font. However, the styles aren't rendered properly. Is it an Inkscape or an Pango bug? Abiword and OOo skrew up as well, but after all they can't handle that many styles anyway. Scribus doesn fine. problems with linked offsets

Inkscape version: 0.43 (Debian package, i386) If you create a "linked offset", and then move the primary object to which that offset is linked, the offset moves FARTHER (in the same direction) than the primary. Watching this process in the XML editor, it appears that moving the primary inserts a "translate" block into the SVG code for the offset, which was not initially present. If this tag is removed, the offset will then recenter on the primary at its new location. Rotating the primary creates similar problems. The linked offset will NOT rotate, but it does move around, although in this case the "translate" tag does not appear in its SVG code. I don't know whether this behavior is intentional or not; to me, it seems kind of disfunctional, like some vector transformations are being applied in the wrong order or something. It's easy to reproduce; it happens every time. So is this behavior a bug, or a "feature"? -- Ian Bruce

If anyone feels like testing, now would be a good time to checkout from the svn and start playing with it. I am using Windows ME to try to load INKSCAPE 0.43-2 after installation - but it crashes. All that I get instead are the following error messages back to back: PANGO ERROR**:file shape.c:line 75 (pango_shape): assertion failed:(glyphs-> num_glyphs > 0) aborting... export dialog breakage

Lately the export dialog got broken: you can't click on Selection, it always goes back to Custom with some wild w/h values. It's basically unusable because of this. There were no suspicious commits to export.cpp so the problem is elsewhere. I'm very busy with work right now and cannot investigate further. Hi all, The good news is that svg2crs foo.svg | crs2xar > foo.xar is almost working. The bad news is that I can't figure out the "right way" to get inkscape units into inches. I found some constants in src/unit-constant.h which tell me that 90 units / inch is set at compile-time, but it seems like the svg file should contain something which makes that explicit. Of course, the svg spec only rambles on about user-agents determining something from their environment, but that seems way wrong for the uber-converter (what's the dpi of your terminal?) I guess svg was never intended to convey real-world dimensions? So, it looks like 90 units/inch is a good assumption, but I don't like to assume. To everyone who uses snapping in Inkscape: We plan to make _screen pixels_ (not px units) the default unit for snapping distance, so that e.g. snapping at 5 pixels remains the same distance on screen regardless of zoom. The question is, do you still need absolute (not zoom-independent) units for specifying snap distance? If so why? If there are no voices in defence of abs units, we will remove them altogether and use _only_ screen pixels. Hi all, I noticed that inkscape will add a Lineto and explicit coordinate values to the end of any paths that have a closepath command (e.g. from an external source.) (I'm running 0.41 if that makes a difference.) This lineto does get followed with a closepath command, so I guess that would take care of the linejoin issue (though how to join at a zero-length edge seems rather indeterminate.) Is this a desired behavior? If so, why? Extensions on win32

Hi, all, again! For some time now, people have been struggling with getting extensions to work on win32. They have been burdened with downloading Perl, Python, PyXML, etc and installing them. We have been carrying Perl and Python DLLs in our distro for the purposes of internal scripting for a while. The interpreters can be invoked ok, but we have not been supplying any supporting libs. I have been saying for months that we should have enough of Perl and Python in the library bundle to be able to provide this in the distro. However, I guess that I have been too lazy to actually work on it. Today I started experimenting with getting Python to work, and have had some success. I added a small class (win32 only) to dynamically add the ./perl and ./python subdirectories to the app-specific PATH for Inkscape. I also updated the Python subdir in the bundle to one that already has PyXML installed. This seems to work, as far as Python is concerned. I am in the middle of uploading a new build and a new library bundle with the new capability. The build is currently too big, with the entire Python lib included, but people can experiment with pruning things out of it to see what can be left out and get the size back down. It will be a while before it is uploaded, but it will be at http://inkscape.org/win32/gtk28-051226.7z Bob

100% Zoom for default new document

Hi All, I've been tutoring inkscape around the place recently and one comment that keeps comming back is how small the text tool is by default. I couldnt reproduce the issue until I realised that the default new document is scaled down to show the whole area of the canvas-area the window. This means that the default font-size of 12pt actually appears quite small for all first time users ( who are only just discovering how to zoom and use all tools ) Picture this : You're a first time user who has executed inkscape and discovers the toolbar on the left hand side of the window. All tools work great however the font-size of the text tool is quite small making all text operations feel uncomfortable in comparison with the other tools. I propose we alter the default document to be viewed at a 100% scale so that all tools visually balance the way they would on the output media. what do you reckon?

I've just committed a new icon theme created by Plácido Sousa. I think it looks really good and encourage everyone to have a look at it. I think some of these icons are clearer and convey their meaning a tad better than the current ones. I'd be interested in the others' opinions. Hello all, I was doing some production work for some DVDs and wanted Barcodes on my production. I used inkscape and so I wanted to get svg barcodes. The problem was the only things I could get to make svg barcodes on my mac was (perl) (GD::Barcode) which creates a gif barcode but with the use of GD::SVG you can make svg barcodes. I found this to be way too silly and couldn't even get GD libs installed so being a perl programmer I used online guides to create SVG::Barcode module which has only simple dependancies on SVG module. Panning mode modifier keys

Hi Bulia, I'm wondering about the use of both Shift and Control for the right drag panning mode. Is there a reason both have been used? I've just implemented it in Scribus using the Control right drag version but tbh I don't think we need both Shift and Control versions. Does Inkscape? It doesn't seem to differentiate. cya Craig

shipping pyXML with the binary package for OS X

Hi all, Manuel Kostka just tested a binary version of pyXML for OS X and it worked fine. It is small enough (4MB, 1MB compressed) so it might be included with inkscape for mac os X in the dmg package. would there be any "legal" issue with this? what should be done with respect to the pyXML project? Michael, pyXML would have to be added to the package and therefore to the macosx packaging directory. do you think it could be done with another EXTRALIB as for libXinerama for Panther or do you think it is better to let the user move it to the correct folder (and mention the last update date in the readme)? Inkscape init strange behavior... [nasty crash on saving]

Hi all As I tested some grid snapping highlighting features I'm currently working on, I found a nasty bug causing a big crash. I just reproduced it 2 minutes ago with the last devel cvs. Open inkscape, open "document properties", check grid on, close "document properties" (optionnal), hit Ctrl-S. [CRASH] with a little debugging infos it seams that during inkscape init, an SPDesktop is created, filled with a SPnamedview filled with a SPdocument... and then, before the user can do anything with the app, a new SPnamedview is created as long as a new SPdocument... but the SPDesktop don't know about it, so it still knows the "old" SPdocument passed to him earlier but not the "new" one... So toggling grid display and hitting Ctrl-S reaches sp_document_maybe_done() in document-undo.cpp with an "old" SPdocument (which doesn't seam to have been destroyed so it's probably still there in memory), and the third assert (on doc->priv->sensitive) crashes the app. As I'm no application init guru (hum... I'm no guru _at all_), could anyone who knows desktop/namedview/document combination have a look at that ? Is this double namedview/document normal ? I reproduced that with an empty document AND with an svg document of mine opened through a parameter in shell. The new Document Preferences dialog looks good. I have one comment about the Page tab. It is not immediately obvious that one can click on the colored rectangles to set the background and border color. In the case of the Background color, at least on my installation, one has a barely visible white rectangle on a grey background. The default Border color is easier to see but still there is nothing to indicate that this is a button until the mouse is placed over it. Another note, I think it would be better to have all Snap options turned off by default. Tav

SGI IRIX MIPSpro crashes

Hi, all developers, I have been trying to port Inkscape to SGI IRIX platform using MIPSpro compiler. It is running now except that some menu entries kill it. I had asked in the #inkscape channel and got help from MenTaLguY yesterday. The symptoms: Selecting some menu items will cause Inkscape crash. These menu entries include # View\Messages # View\Scripts # View\Icon Preview # Object\Swatches # Object\Transform # Object\Align and Distribute # Object\Grid Arrange # Help\About Memory MenTaLguY observed that the dialogs behind all but one (Icon Preview) are GTKMM based dialogs. The problem might or might not be related to C++ ABI mismatch. I then re-built GLibMM, GTKMM, and Inkscape using the same settings. However the problem remains. So I am sending this email to the list and hope experienced C++ developers can give me more insights. All these problems are now fixed, both for interactive scaling by mouse and for numeric scaling via the Controls bar, and for both values of the "Scale stroke with objects" option. Among other things, this means that stroked objects no longer lose snapping on scale, and that the "Default scale origin" option in the Selector tool preferences finally works as designed. Win 32 tablet support

There have been a number of bugs recently reported about problems with tablets on Win32: bugs 1281512, 1335301, 1379654, 1380883. These relate to either the mouse being treated as a pen, or the X and Y axis being reversed. Similar problems are known on gimp under Win32, and the problem seems to be in gdk. I made a patch to add #ifndef NOEXTINPUT around all the template code, which lets me compile without extended tablet support (the tablet will work as mouse or pen, but there is no pressure or tilt support). So I'd like to get this into CVS, what do I do next? The patch is conservative, there are no changes to the code unless NOEXTINPUT is defined. James

In the statusbar, * The Stroke indicator also displays the stroke width of selection (averaged if there are multiple objects selected with different stroke widths), located to the right of the stroke color/transparency swatch. Left-clicking on it opens the Fill&Stroke dialog with the Stroke Style tab selected. I'm seeing a clash of intentions with packaging/win32/inkscape.nsi (as of revision 1.14) and Makefile.mingw (as of revision 1.49.) inkscape.nsi is looking for "inkscape/README", while Makefile.mingw only copies "README.*" in the dist target. I suggest changing Makefile.mingw to allow README to be copied by dropping the dot in the filename. I noticed this now that I make'd clean. The calendar contest on deviantART

I propose we give a crazy extension to it or put it on hold. My thought is that we can aim for the calendar to be ready for the middle of '06. We could then make it an 18-month calendar that will go through the end of '07. Doing this will give everyone time to work on new pieces and refine older ones. We'll also get better quality entries and hopefully people will get other great features to work with in the interim as well. I don't think that just extending it for a shorter period of time will do anyone any good. If we're going to associate Inkscape with any fund raising merchandise, we should aspire to give people their moneys worth. Any thoughts? -Josh

A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity to meet Brandon Sanders when he visited OSDL about a conference he's organizing. He's also a long time Inkscape user and fan. Brandon's also involved in IBESI, an org that helps ordinary people create and run R&D projects. He's been looking for good guinea pigs. It struck me that this could be one way to meet our PDF export/import needs. It seems to fit Brandon's model very well. The community needs this feature badly, and users may be willing to fund development if there's a solid plan and concensus. I didn't move on with that, in part because of the unclear prospects of our renderer and whether it will be replaced by anything. However apart from renderer, filter support needs a lot of new code at the SVG level. And this is what we can start doing now, it won't be lost in any case. We'll need to add an SPFilter object and make it implement the SVG specification for the svg:filter element, and we also need CSS support for specifying filters. This is all pretty straightforward - a lot of the logic can be borrowed from SPGradient which has a similar mode of operation. I hereby call for volunteers for the SPFilter task. You won't see immediate result from this yet, but it's a good task for novices who want to learn a large and important part of the codebase. (For one thing, you are unlikely to break anything by adding it :) If and when the SVG/CSS support is ready, I will probably be tempted to add a quick and dirty blur support to the renderer, no matter whether it's going to be replaced later or not. Save and Open as .ZINK (was zip with images)

Hi, I enhanced the first extension, which was able to save a zip archive with svg and images, with an extra extension which is able to read the archive instantly. I changed the zip-extention to .zink which is of course a combination of Zip and Inkscape. The output extension creates a zip and makes all image hrefs relative. The input extension does the reverse: it unpackes the zip and before printing the doc to stout it replaces all image hrefs with the exact path of the temp dir. The svg in the archive is named content.svg so its easy to open. Of course a file with metadata can be packed be also, but I wanted quick results and I don't really know what to store in such a manifest because everything is said in the svg. It works rather smooth. You won't notice that this is not the native file format. You can open a .zink make changes and click CTRL-S so it save the .zink-file again. NEW: Translatable .inx files

Okay, I figured out the intltool magic, and the user viewable strings in the .inx files should be placed inside the .po files. I can't figure out how to make my Inkscape run in a different language, so I can't test to make sure that they show up translated. But, I believe that they do. The strings definitely show up in the .po files. -- Translators -- If someone could go through their translation and make sure that all the GUI is translatable. I think this was the large set of strings that couldn't be translated. As far as I'm aware the entire interface should be translatable. -- Extension Authors -- The inx files now support having an underscore in front of anything user viewable. So an attribute like "description" now also supports "_description". I've changed all the ones in CVS. --Ted PS - I'm really behind on the list, if you expected a reply from me on something, I hope I'll get to that today. Sorry.

opening EPS, PS and SK files on Ubuntu Breezy (may work on other distros)

As asked on the Jabber Conference Room and IRC channel, it seems some people (and I was one of them too) can't open EPS files in Inkscape. I realised that the *.eps option didn't even show up in the masking filetypes during File/open. So I tried to find why and found what to do in order to make this work. Some (All) of these steps can be easily done on every linux distro I think Could someone else try these steps to give feedback ? I don't really know where to say this, so I try here, maybe someone will be kind enough to complete, test and put it somewhere on the wiki for desperate users... mtou --------------------------------------------------------- * In order to be able to open *.eps files, you need gs (ghostscript) installed AND to be able to open *.ps files (as read in share/extensions/eps_input.inx) * In order to be able to open *.ps files, you need pstoedit installed AND to be able to open *.sk files (as read in ps_input.inx) * In order to be able to open *.sk files, you need skconvert, which comes with sketch, which as been recently renamed to skencil I think (as read in sk_input.inx) So, what I done on my ubuntu breezy distro was to install all that was missing in these dependencies. sudo apt-get install gs pstoedit sketch Now, *.eps, *.ps and *.sk filetypes can be opened in the breezy inkscape package. But... some error still occur during the conversion from an sk file to the final svg file. In fact, to open an eps file, we ask gs to convert it to a *.ps file, pstoedit to convert it to an *.sk file and then skconvert (via ../inkscape/share/extensions/sk2svg.sh) to convert it to an *.svg file inkscape can open and edit. the first 2 conversion worked very well, but the last one, using skconvert was broken. The guilty is the sketch version (0.6.15-1ubuntu2 as I speak) which has a broken feature while reading the file and trying to parse the sk file (sketch bug report here : https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=105470&aid=1025599&group_…) So I uninstalled the "broken" sketch package, and tried to install the debian unofficial package from http://www.nongnu.org/skencil/download.html Its dependencies were broken because it needed python2.3 and the 2.4 version is already installed on my computer, so I threw it away not to mess up with my libraries. Last thing that could have been done was to compile the last sketch(skencil) version from source So I downloaded the skencil-0.6-17.tar.gz tar ball from http://www.nongnu.org/skencil/download.html copied it in my /usr/src and then untarred it (for ubuntu users : make sure you are in group src to be able to write in the /usr/src directory) then go to the skencil sources directory and try the setup to configure my system lacked python, tcl and tk development packages, so I need to install them sudo apt-get install python2.4-dev tcl8.4-dev tk8.4-dev after that, when you try to configure (./setup.py configure), it works like a charm you then need to compile (./setup.py build) and install (./setup.py install) if you want to install this in the directory you want (and I highly recommend that no to mess up with the package system), you just need to pass an --prefix option to setup.py when it's fully installed, the skconvert works very well and inkscape load eps, ps and sk files without a hitch ----------------------- For developpers now : The errors reported when the import does not work is really not user friendly When sketch isn't installed, the only thing inkscape tells us is that the tempfile /tmp/XXXXXXsdfgjndrg.svg is not found Could someone look to change the *.inx files to require a _working_ version of sketch and no only the skconvert utility ? Is it hard to do ?

Image export to EPS: black background

Hi all, Inkscape is great! Just finished my master thesis and used it for quite some graphics.. I had one problem though. I have a drawing with a single image on the page. Displays fine. When saving this image to EPS, the image would get a black background. When exporting to PNG and then converting to EPS (GIMP), all works fine. Alphabetical order internationalization

If I want to sort a list of strings in alphabetical order, obviously that is dependent on the alphabet being used. How do I find out the order of the alphabet being used? Or, better yet, is their a function to rank two strings based on that alphabet? I don't see anything to do this. The standard functions just seem to use ASCII numbering, which of course doesn't really work for any language besides English. What happens when you sort by name in Nautilus? Is this a known problem I just don't realize? --Ted

[Desktop_architects] Portland: The Linux Desktop Integration Interface

One of the things that's come out of the desktop architect's meeting was the need for something to simplify having to choose between GNOME and KDE. This need has spawned a new project called "The Portland Project", formed by leaders from KDE and GNOME (and a bunch of other projects). Briefly stated, the goal of the Portland Project is to make KDE and GNOME work so well together that a software developer could choose either Gtk or Qt at their whim, and it will "just work" and fit natively for either desktop environment, including look and feel, themes, services, and so on. Alex Graveley (Gnome) and George Staikos (KDE) agreed to lead the task force and will each invite one additional member. The goal of the task force is to prioritize integration points, solicit feedback from ISVs and identify existing functionality in Gnome and KDE that can be used to implement Portland, and possibly provide a first draft implementation. The task force will do a first report out before Linux.Conf.au (End of Jan, 2006) The goal is to have the first version of Portland ready for inclusion in LSB 4.0 which is scheduled for the end of 2006. In order to reach this goal it is important that Portland is available in early 2006 so that it can be included in distributions before LSB adoption. It is understood that the first version of Portland may not be able to address all integration points and that additional versions may follow. PDF Export/Import via Cairo

Hi all, I talked with Carl a bit more today about the PDF functionality with Cairo and what it'd take to use it with Inkscape. Here's some additional info. Carl, correct me if I've captured any of this wrong. Some clarification on libsvg, when Carl said he wasn't supporting it, I interpreted this to mean it needed another maintainer. He clarified this; the reasons he had forked libsvg from librsvg originally was to try out replacing its libart backend with a cairo backend. Now that librsvg uses cairo as it's back end, there's no reason for libsvg to be used, and in fact it lacks capabilities that are in librsvg. So... The plan going forward would be this. svg2pdf as it exists now is probably ok for a start; it's at least better than we got now, and fits within our existing system. I think it's mainly going to be a packaging issue to hook it into our extension framework. Beyond that, svg2png needs to be modified to use librsvg instead of libsvg. This is probably a fairly simple task, as svg2png is a really short bit of code. I told Carl about UberConverter. He wasn't sure if the design of Cairo's PDF functionality would match UberConverter's structure, so a crs2pdf via Cairo may not be the right approach. Carl also mentioned something called Poppler(?) which does PDF _import_, that works in conjunction with Cairo, and that would give us a good round-trip to and from PDF. PDF Support in Inkscape

Hi all, I've been noticing a LOT of requests for PDF/PS support in Inkscape. Either export or import or both. I'm fairly certain that this is the #1 top feature need for Inkscape right now. Over the past year or so, I've been fishing around for a volunteer to implement this. But unfortunately I'm coming up dry. Ain't no one I can find with an itch to implement this, not on a volunteer basis anyway. However, there are a TON of users with this need. Some of whom, I'm fairly certain, would be willing to pledge some money towards it. Maybe a little, maybe a lot, who knows. I think if enough people pitched in funds, we could actually make this happen. This is one feature I think we as a community could just force through, by hiring some mercenary to attack and kill it for us, hardcore style. Can you all tell me what you think? I really have no solid idea if enough people would be open to this plan. Are you a user that'd be willing to pledge $100 or more towards this? Are you a developer that'd be willing to commit to doing this work for some $k? Or do you have some ideas on how we could make this need get met? Please email me and let me know what you think. I mentioned that we'd heard that Cairo's PDF export wasn't good, and asked for the skinny on that. Here's the gist. Cairo's original mission was for screen and print perfect PDF, so what you see on the screen is what you get on the printer. Originally this was done by just creating a bitmap snapshot and embedding it in the PDF. This *looked* great, but of course is a heavyhanded solution. Later, someone created a new PDF backend for Cairo, but when they got ready to release 1.0 they saw that it was woefully inadequate, so Cairo 1.0 wasn't able to meet its PDF export capabilities. However, Carl says that actually has been their number one area of focus for the next release. This release is scheduled for Dec 15. He recommends we withhold making conclusions about Cairo's PDF until that release. Also, I asked about some sort of pluggable cairo-based svg-to-pdf converter, and this immediately clicked! He'd written a svg2pdf tool based on (an old) librsvg that does this. This is in the Cairo tree, and my guess is that this is something we could wrap up with an extension and immediately use. Perhaps the inkscape developers who are conversant with Cairo stuff could briefly mind meld with those who do extensions, and we can have Cairo-based PDF export in a matter of days. However, there are some caveats. In theory, this should work on Windows, but Carl's never tested it. So some of our Windows (and OSX) Inkscapers might want to put some time into this, too. I know PDF export is probably *most* important for users on non-Linux platforms so this testing is absolutely critical for y'all. Second, Carl says he's not providing any support for the libsvg module that this tool depends on, and in fact it's missing some features - filters, markers, transparency, etc. that we're definitely going to need. Thus, I think if we are going to invest time and/or money anywhere, this is the spot to do it. I'm not sure exactly what form that'd take - would we migrate code from inkscape into libsvg? Or the reverse? Would we collaborate with the librsvg people? Would we take over maintainership of libsvg? What do you guys think? Are we as a project interested in handling maintainership of libsvg? Regarding Google Summer of Code, I heard that they're also planning a Winter Summer of Code and/or a follow up next summer, but haven't heard confirmation. Also, even if they do, there's no guarantee Inkscape would again be accepted as a project... Also, I think the work may be more than one college kid could handle. ;-) So, I think we need to not count on Google for this one; if we do get in again, I think we'd want to divvy out the work in smaller chunks anyway, so even best case it wouldn't give us a total solution. Someone asked about the check from this last time... Yep, it just arrived via FedEx on Tuesday. :-) Early on we'd thought it might be good to put this towards some sort of sponsorship, so certainly adding it to the pool for a PDF solution is a possibility, if there's a strong enough concensus to use it for that. There's something called RUDI that is getting a lot of discussion as a solution to better desktop integration - sounds pretty cool. The C++ ABI breakage has gotten a lot of discussion; Kegel says the gcc devs have committed to stabilizing their ABI so these problems may diminish. There's a strong feeling that there should be a stable package of GNOME/etc. libs for Windows, so each ISV/project doesn't have to statically link and ship their own copies. Carl and Mike Shaffer of Mozilla were discussing a lot about Cairo performance; sounds like there's much work going on in that area. John Waugh of Ubuntu told me about something called 'Dogtail' that sounds like it's a powerful way to do testing, and suggested we use that for Inkscape. An idea occurred to me - some of the exercises we're doing here with pens and cards seem like they'd work *much* better on top of Inkboard. I think it would be useful to record an inkboard session and then create 50+ simulated sessions all talking to the same document, and fix whatever breaks. Inkscape could totally rule as a conference collaboration tool. Wiki Spam, more security. time for accounts yet?

The current anti spam system doesn't seem to be effective anymore and it is quite annoying to use, at least with a login system I only have to worry about it once and then save the settings in my browser. (The notSPAM block must be typed every time and it is quite frustrating even the option to use logins and avoid having to confirm everything each time woudl be a big help). I cleared some SPAM links from the main wiki page inkscape-devel(a)lists.sourceforge.net and then noticed the sneaky beggars had added blocks of hidden links which do not actually show up on the page. NEW: Ensure selected objects don't overlap each other

Tim Dwyer from the office next to mine has been working on code to move rectangles by the minimal amount enough that they no longer overlap. Now he's spent a few days adding this to Inkscape (with a little help from me, njh & possibly Brisgeek): in the Align & Distribute dialog box near the existing Clump/Unclump buttons. (Unclump merely reduces overlap, whereas Remove Overlaps completely removes overlap.) You can also think of it like the Distribute edge-to-edge buttons, except that it moves things only enough to ensure that they don't overlap; e.g. if applied to a set of objects that are roughly in a grid arrangement, then the new code probably does what the user wants (preserve the grid nature), whereas existing Distribute edge-to-edge would put the objects in a long diagonal line (unless the user does extra work, acting in small groups at a time). This should be a significant addition to Inkscape's usability for diagramming. Interface changes welcome; e.g. I wonder if it should be in the same box as Distribute; though having the separate box does make it clearer that the Hor/Vert Gap settings apply only to the Remove Overlap option. pjrm.

background icon prerendering performance

As some of you may have noticed, JonCruz implemented my idea about prerendering the icons as a background task. It seems to work very, very well. Good work, Jon. Basically the idea is that the GUI icons get rendered one-at-a-time in the brief pauses between mouse motions or keypresses, when Inkscape isn't otherwise busy. On my lowly Celeron 500, it takes about 60ms (average) to render a single icon; a few icons take a bit longer (as much as 175-200ms). Even while I'm doing other stuff, it seems to take only 15-25 seconds to get all the menu icons rendered, during which time I can draw or navigate around the fileselector or something (the File menu renders first). By the time I start using the menus, their icons have usually been rendered. Compare this to the situation we used to have: formerly, the first time you clicked on the Object menu, on a machine like mine you were guaranteed at least a: 70ms*16 = 1120ms = 1.12s delay. And that's something of a best case. Let's not even think about what it used to be like when we rendered all the icons up-front at startup time... This is a vivid demonstration of how doing the same amount of work more cleverly can make an application feel a lot more responsive. Anyway, I've refactored the code a little bit and also stuck in some timers to assess rendering performance. The g_warnings are temporary; I'd just like to get a sense of how common it is for the rendering of icons to run over 70ms on different people's machines right now. Ultimately I'd like to get some incremental rendering code in place, not just for background icon rendering, but also for other things, like previews in the file dialog. It's really annoying to select a complex file in the fileselector and have to wait for its preview to finish rendering before you can do anything. -mental

For my own biology research purposes I've implemented the curve morphing algorithm by weighted means of strings, which can morph any pair of Bézier curves (or any other set of points that define a curve) with as many weighted averages as the user desires. The primary use is for reconstructing volumes for 3D modelling purposes, but I believe the ability to create average curves (both open and closed curves work), particularly regarding animated SVG, would be a nice feature to have in Inkscape. I lack the knowledge of the Inkscape code base to plug this in myself. If anyone is interested, I can help and learn about Inkscape in the process. The algorithm consists of an ANSI C python module, with the core functionality separated in a pure C file. Extention Collect images/Publish Zip

Hello, I've been busy creating my first extention for inkscape which is also my first python script. Though it needs some work we use it allready and it's is quite usefull. Its called "Publish Zip" and resides in the filters menu. It does the following: - it copies all linked images to the current dir en modifies all links to be relative - it creates a zip containing the document and the linked images. The zip can be mailed and opened by someone else with all images correctly displayed. You can find it here: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1364270&group_id=9… known problems: - Document has to be saved first - to create a correct svg-document in the zipfile pubzip has to be run, then the document has to be saved, then pubzip has to be run again. - it fails with an ugly error when document is never saved before. Unknown problems: - only tested on Linux/Debian PPC To solve the known problems I've a question: Is there a possibility to give a "save doc" command from inside a python script to inkscape? This would fix all above problems. If someone has another solution to solve these problems please tell me. Also another question: Is it possible to put an extention function in the File Menu next to e.g. "Save as"? Snap points or snap nodes?

Hi all, I'm just having a tinker with the grid code; one thing I noticed: the preferences for snapping points to grids/guides uses different terminology: "snap points to..." or "snap nodes to..." Does anybody have any idea which one is right? Also: I'm playing with object snapping. Does anyone know of any existing code within Inkscape to compute straight-line - bezier curve intersections? about dialog tweaks

Home sick today, and not much good for anything else, so I decided to fix some of the visual things that had been annoying me about the about dialog. Highlights: * the splash panel is constrained to the correct aspect ratio, so you can't see any "off-the-canvas" bits anymore * dialog is now automatically sized to the correct dimensions for the splash panel to have its natural document size * the window can still be arbitrarily resized (maybe it should have a minimum size, though?) * notebook tabs scroll when window is resized small * the build label is (in my opinion) positioned more aesthetically -mental

Icon rendering at startup

I went ahead and implemented the idle callback rendering of icons. This should make the menus much more responsive the first time they pop up. I think it's pretty solid as far as being defensive about the state before it tries anything, and drops off the idle list once pending things are complete.

Disappearing units on win32

I've verified that the bug described at the URL below is indeed caused by the fact that the _unit_table member is declared statically (as far as I can tell). It's a pretty irritating bug and the problem should be quite easy to fix, I don't feel confident enough with the Inkscape source to provide a proper patch though, could someone look into this? The variable is declared/used in unit-menu.h/cpp in the ui/widget subdir, the UnitTable class is defined in units.h/cpp in the util subdir. For testing purposes I made the static member variable _unit_table into a pointer, made all methods use getUnitTable instead of using the member variable directly and constructed the unit table with new inside the UnitMenu constructor (if it wasn't constructed yet). All the others gtk applications works fine with the gtk-qt-engine and so does Inkscape except for the Align and Distribute Dialog. So, with 0.43 finally out, let's all return to development. The 0.44 will be a "long" "development" release, so you all have plenty of time to try your wildest ideas. (If you start right now, that is :) I would like to list some things that I know are being worked on and that I would like to see finalized for 0.44. I'm not trying to push anyone, just making an overview of the projects I know and care about, in no particular order. Additions are welcome, as are comments - from the developers mentioned below as well as anyone else. Let's use this thread to get an idea of where we are and what we can expect in the future. - GTKmmfication. Ralf Stephan seems to be making a good progress, so I really hope we'll see this coming to some kind of milestone soon, with most of the current code duplication eliminated. An update on the current status would be much appreciated. - Rotation center retention (John Cliff) - a very useful simple patch that just needs to be rewritten correctly. I will then reuse this facility so that keyboard and Transform dialogs honor the center position as well. - Path effects (ACSpike) - this basically means converting all the Python effects (and adding more) so they are completely live and applicable to any path or shape, without losing the editability of the original. We have a pretty good idea of what to do and how to do it. I'd really love to see this implemented, at least bascially, in 0.44. - Memory debugging. No one has been doing this recently. Our memory intake is truly notorious, and I'm sure a lot can be done about that by a dedicated developer. The most natural person for this task is Mental, thanks to his libgc involvement, but patching leaks does not require much knowledge of the codebase (though it requires much special expertise), so volunteers are welcome. - Text UI. I really have no excuses for not implementing the text toolbar. Except for, you guessed it, GTKmmfication being unfinished. For example, I want to subclass the Gtk::Spinbutton to make it easier to add a useful right-click menu for spinbuttons. I can do this now, but again, I'm not sure how much of this will have to be redone later. - DOM (Bob Jamison). We have a Javascript subdir for ages, and I'm afraid it will start to bitrot (if not already) if not put to use. Bob, can you give an update on this? - Layers dialog (Mental). Long overdue. Mental, is there anything specific we can do to help you start moving with that? - Swatches panel in the main window (Jon Cruz). Really a must. A simple change, but one that will change the perception of Inkscape by new users drastically. Jon, what holds you back with this? - Snapping. Lots of problems have accumulated in that area. User complaints are regular. Someone (probably me, though volunteers are welcome) just needs to lay out a plan and attack this methodically. - style.cpp automation - Richard Hughes had some code for autogenerating style.cpp code from the CSS specification. I wonder what is the status of this? - More connectors work (Michael) - specifically, I would love to see an option for connectors made of hor/vert segments only. This seems to be the most useful in practice. (And if we have Path Effects working, one of the first effects I'd like to see implemented is Round Corners. Any effect will be transparently applicable to connector lines.) - Site redesign. We've got a design chosen, so what is the next step? Is anyone working on that? - Windows "dialogs on top" patch for GTK from this bug: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1363297&group_id=9… This issue sucks so big that we simply have no serious chances on Windows until it's resolved. Anyone knows the current status of the patch? - Bug sorting and closing. We're really behind on that. Let's not (try to) clean this up before the release only. Here's the schema I've settled on: <keybindings name="user-visible name for shortcut scheme">  <primary keyval="a gdk keyval name" modifiers="control,alt,shift" verb="VerbName" />  <seconary keyval="a gdk keyval name" verb="OtherVerbName" /> </keybindings> The keyval names are as returned by gdk_keyval_name(). I've comitted a shortcuts.xml file that I've extracted from shortcuts.cpp; it follows this schema. We'll probably move it somewhere else later, but right now it's in src/. No code to read it, yet, but that'll come soon. I think files using these schemas will go in /usr/share/inkscape/keybindings/ and ~/.inkscape/keybindings/. I'm not sure whether the default schema should remain hard-coded or whether that should stay in an XML file. Thoughts? -mental

Hello inkscape developers, many of my colleagues and myself are working in a scientific field which frequently requires the production of figures which are essentially bitmaps with some added annotations. A photograph with an arrow pointing at some feature. And a bar with two T-shaped ends to indicate a length unit. The problem is that most of the images are pretty dark, so what would be required are white arrows and scales. Which is difficult, given how SVG treats markers totally seperately from the lines to which they're attached. It is in fact this shortcoming in that has prevented me from advertising inkscape to my colleagues, many of which use WinDoze almost exclusively to prepare graphics in CorelDraw. For my own use I have created a markers.svg file in which I defined the most important arrows and stops in white, but this is a rather unstisfactory workaround (and it will be hell to explain to users why they should knuckle under restrictions which, from their point of view, have to do only with inkscape's weird data storage format -- all they need in the end is PostScript). Let's face it: there is hardly any case in which one would want arrowheads and other markers to have a different color than the line to which they're attached. Sadly the creators of SVG haven't seen this and provided some marker style option that makes markers inherit the colors of their attached path. So what would be required is that inkscape silently added an additional marker definition for every line color that is used with a marker. Maybe the "Stroke Style" dialog could include a checkbox to turn off this behavior if desired. I've looked into inkscape's code hoping to find a place where this functionality could be added but have found none. Anybody who is deeply familiar with inkscape's architecture could probably add the necessary code in one weekend, while it would take me weeks to just get my head around the entire source tree. So I'd be glad if someone could look into this. Inkscape is a great piece of software, and this would make it even better. -- dunno@...1090...

inkscape 0.43 not building on windows

Hi there, I try to build inkscape 0.43 and CVS snapshot on winXP, with latest mingw and perl/gtk2.8 as indicated on the win32 build page (http://inkscape.org/win32/win32buildnotes.html). The trouble is that some files seem to be missing from the 0.43 source archive found on inkscape website (for example, files under src/dom/js). These missing files make the build fail. When I try to build from a CVS snapshot (http://www.inkscape.org/cvs-snap/) I encounter other difficulties which seem to come from a broken CVS tree. Is it normal ? What is required to build 0.43? The whole thing might well be a shell problem rather than an Inkscape problem after all. The only problem from the inkscape side is: what "shell" is executed to give the PATH and at what level (user configuration files are apparently omitted)? In addition, while looking at the inx files I remarked that to open an eps file Inkscape in fact does: eps --gs--> ps --pstoedit--> sk --sk2svg--> svg which implies that you have sketch installed in order to open (e)ps files. what is the reason not to do: eps --gs--> ps --pstoedit--> svg or even: eps --pstoedit--> svg ps --pstoedit--> svg which work (I changed my inx files and tested) except for the usual problem with ps to svg conversion (see the XML repair wiki page). If using sketch as an intermediate is better, could the dependency be conditional: with only ps and pstoedit, use them, when sketch is present, add the sketch step. it's a bit weird to have to install sketch to have ps import in inkscape... gtkmm memory leaks?

I'm noticing, looking over the dialog code, that people don't seem to be paying attention to memory management with gtkmm. Now, it may be that folks aren't bothering, simply because the dialogs never get freed, but I'd still rather people do it properly. Here is an explanation of how memory management is supposed to work in gtkmm. Extensions and binary distribution

Inkscape, like many open source programs, uses Python as a scripting language for extensions. This is all fine and good, but unfortunately raises serious issues for binary distribution. A few are obvious: * Windows users don't have it * Mac users probably have an out of date version * Linux users almost certainly have it, but it's probably got a different ABI/API to what is expected The first two do not concern me here. The last one does. The libpython C API varies between systems in an incompatible manner. Python 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 are all in the wild, and they export different APIs. Worse, Python can be configured to use either UCS2 or UCS4 unicode strings. The upstream default is UCS2 but some distributions configure it to use UCS4 - this changes the exported ABI. I'm not sure what the solution to this is. Currently we recommend people do add Python for scripting to their applications, but that horse is long since gone for Inkscape. So we have a few alternatives: 1) Disable Python scripting in autopackage build. That'd be a shame. 2) Enable it in such a way that if libpython cannot be loaded, Inkscape still starts and works minus scripting 3) Figure out some new magic tricks so we can be compatible with all of them (relaytool can help here), for instance by avoiding the unstable parts of the API 4) Drop Python and port the scripts to some other system, like Lua or Mono (3) is the best for the user but requires the most in-depth knowledge of the Python API and versioning history. Statically linking Python isn't really an option, unfortunately. thanks -mike

I'm not sure who's responsible for http://inkscape.org/win32-snap/ so I'm writing to the list. As reported in https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=604306&aid=1275848&group_… these builds crash on exit. The remedy, according to Bob, is to make clean. Please can someone do this so that I can recommend those builds to windows people. Another related issue: Can we have with-debug-info builds in that directory? I finished the conversions of sp_repr_ref, sp_repr_unref and most of sp_repr_set_attr. There are just a few instances of sp_repr_set_attr that require a little more thought, such as these: sp-object.cpp: /// \todo fixme: Exception if object is NULL? */ if (!sp_repr_set_attr(object->repr, key, value)) { ex->code = SP_NO_MODIFICATION_ALLOWED_ERR; } Since sp-repr_set_attr always returns true, code such as this will always be executed. I figured people who are familiar with this code and know what is supposed to be going on should make these changes. So the idea was that this satisfies everyone. Take the case of the text tool - the same point applies. We default to 10pt Arial, but this is a very personal thing of course. Just because you changed the font of a small bit of text somewhere, does that really mean you want all new text to appear in that style? (I see Inkscape is inconsistent here. Edit the colour of an object and this becomes the colour for all new objects, whether you like it or not. Edit the font, and this does not become the new font.) So Xara has a simple, global rule; try to apply any style or attribute with nothing selected and you can make it the default new style (font, colour, fill style, whatever). So we have a orthogonal model, that is actually easier to use than Inkscape (less to learn and less case-specific UI) and is more powerful (it does what Tavmjong is wanting, and gives the user the choice as to how they work, even Bulia's way) I see Inkscape has, for example, as 'Set as default' button in the text dialog. So does this mean that I have different UI for setting the default style or attribute for each of the possible styles or attribute? That's not good surely? Charles

Hi there, Just upgraded from 0.42- to 0.43-1 on winXP and the font used on menus/dialogs seems considerably smaller than on previous versions (did it use the system font previously?) also the menus seem less responsive, taking a noticable time to draw. Is this "expected" behaviour that is due to GTK/GTKmm changes or a change within inkscape itself? Or is it just me ;-)

Now that I have voulunteered to document our schema extensions in teh inkscape and sodipodi namespaces, I realize tha tI have no idea how to do that, where to start, or even if I am using the right words. Help! Inline Function Removal

I'm was looking at getting rid of the Inline Function Removal Janitor Item. For the conversion of sp_repr_change_order to repr->changeOrder, we have some code that expects a return code in tree_move: http://www.inkscape.org/doc/doxygen/html/sp-xmlview-tree_8cpp-source.php#l0… I'm assuming that since sp_repr_change_order always returns TRUE, the proper patch would include removing the variable OK and the assigning and conditional related to it. It seems obvious since you'll get a compiler error if the assignments are not removed. I just wanted to check to make sure my changes are minimal and don't change other behavior. Also, the last time I looked at these Janitor items, I put some questions in the Wiki. It would be great if these could be answered so that this action item could closed. In particular, whether sp_repr_children, sp_repr_unparent, sp_repr_document, sp_repr_document_root are to be included in this conversion. Thanks, -- Rob. http://woodpendant.com

os x packaging problems (in CVS)

hi list, I experienced some packaging problems since I use --enable-osxapp and since the reopening of HEAD (I don't know which of these could cause the problem). I hoped that Michael commits will solve them but here is what I see: 1/. I package with the instruction: ./osx-app.sh ../../inkscape_compiled/bin/inkscape ../Info.plist macosx everything seems to run fine but when I double click the newly created app I receive an error message: "You cannot open the application "Inkscape" because it may be damaged or incomplete." I looked into the app bundle and it lacks the executable so obviously it cannot run. If I run the executable from the command line in my prefix dir it works (but does not find many stuff because I compiled with the --enable-osxapp configuration option). 2/. Then I copied the executable to the app bundle. The message is gone and the application only briefly appears in the dock before quitting and in my console log I have the message: ** (process:10080): WARNING **: Could not open units file 'Contents/ Resources/ui/units.txt': No such file or directory ** (process:10080): WARNING **: * INKSCAPE_DATADIR is: '/Volumes/ files/softwares/inkscape_compiled//share' ** (process:10080): WARNING **: * INKSCAPE_UIDIR is: 'Contents/ Resources/ui' Nothing to do! Though, the ui directory is present in the .app bundle and readable as well as everything inside it. Maybe it looks for it in "/Volumes/ files/softwares/inkscape_compiled//share" which is my prefix dir. It should look where the bundle is... I'm using Xcode 2.1 on 10.4 and I remarked that when packaging gcc-4.0 is used by default while I compiled inkscape with gcc 3.3. could it matter? then, how could I change Xcode's default? Also I compile with an additional option as an environment variable as Michael advised: export ac_cv_lib_intl_dgettext="yes" Any help will be appreciated. With the numerous commits into cvs I would like to build some new development builds so that people could test the new features. "make" still bails with the same error while compiling Inkscape from CVS. This next information might be VERY important (it is either just annoying, or maybe Very telling:) a recent attempt at compiling one of the release candidates for Inkscape 0.43 was COMPLETELY SUCCESSFUL! Imagine my "distress": 1. Just get done with another failed build of Inkscape from CVS. 2. Download and then successfully compile a pre-release that had just come from that same code. 3. Turn right around and attempt to re-compile Inkscape from CVS, and "make" still bails with the same error. It might be better to render the icons as an ultra-low-priority idle task (not a thread, since we're not thread-safe). -mental
