Hello! I'm interested to work on the proposal to separate the SVG canvas widget from the rest of the program. To submit the application to Google I'm asked the description of the project and I have just sent the text from the wiki. I don't know if I'm going to complete the project, but it's worth trying. What should I do to have my application approved? Problems running current cvs

Hi, I updated my local cvs and compiled today's inkscape version. I had to update my gc version to 6.5 (was that a correct move?) Did the regular autogen.sh -> configure -> make -> make install (configure went with the "--prefix=/opt" option in order not to screw up my working inkscape). No errors, all went fine. Now if I run "/opt/bin/inkscape" it does nothing, "/opt/bin/inkview" works as expected though. Any ideas?? Thanks -- Lucas Vieites Fariña Dept. Build failure: need errno include in latex-pstricks.cpp

Hi, I'm getting a build failure (from current public CVS) using GCC 3.4 on Fedora Core 3; it claims to fail because errno is undefined in src/extensions/internal/latex-pstricks.cpp . The attached trivial patch just adds an "#include <errno.h>" to that file; builds and runs fine (as far as I can tell after only a couple of minutes of use) with this. Do you prefer that even trivial issues like this are filed in the bug tracker, or is just hitting the mailing list OK? Translations and Shortcuts with ALT+something

Hello, there is this shortcut for ie. ALT+D to get the clone. But ALT+D ist also in the Menu the mostleft item <File> wich is in German <Datei>. There are two possibilities: 1. change the shortcut for the function in the translated language 2. change the translation of the menu iten so it becomes an other shortcut but 1. I donot feel confident as the shortcuts are across all translations the same no learning needed 2. specially this menu point has a very common translation, an other word would sound strange there How to proceed ? Using GNOME CVS and Bugzilla?

I'd like to ask a question (or rather two): * Are there any plans on using GNOME CVS and GNOME Bugzilla for Inkscape development? Since I've already searched the website and the archives for answers, but didn't really find them, I'd also like to also ask: * Would you be interested in using GNOME CVS and GNOME Bugzilla for Inkscape development? Remember, using either one does not require that you are part of GNOME Core in any way, or that you are required to have any dependencies more than what are already in Inkscape at the moment. To be precise, this is what is required for a piece of software to be in GNOME CVS: http://live.gnome.org/NewCVSModules Notice the lack of "you must use gnome-print", "we will dictate what you should use", "you cannot interoperate with any other platform", "using cvs.gnome.org means you have to eat babies", and so on. ;-) So why would I suggest that Inkscape be using cvs.gnome.org and bugzilla.gnome.org? Well, doing so would make it much more easy for GNOME contributors to contribute to Inkscape (when given permission of course), and obviously also the other way around. I come from a translation perspective, and cross-software contributions are especially important for translation. The GNOME Translation Project (GTP) has more than 115 language teams and many hundreds of translators translating into those languages. We're usually quite successful, and many applications that are placed in GNOME CVS get completely new translations within only a few days. Also, since the translation teams in the GTP cover all of GNOME, the translations are often very consistent in terms of terminology etc. So not only is (at least most of) the software HIG-compliant, it's also consistent in translated terminology. But in order to do that, GNOME translators must have easy access to the software to translate. The reason it currently works is because all translation teams have access to cvs.gnome.org, and so they can translate not only all of GNOME Core, but all other software that's inside GNOME CVS, like Gimp, Dia, Gnumeric, Sodipodi, and so on. What the GNOME translators cannot easily do is translate applications that for some reason are hosted outside of GNOME CVS, like Inkscape. In order to solve that problem, Inkscape would have to be in GNOME CVS. So being in cvs.gnome.org would really be a boost in terms of translations (and probably also other contribution-related areas as well). I'm confident that you'd see quite a lot of improvement in the area of translations just moments after a migration. I hope that it comes without saying that if you should decide that you want to host Inkscape on cvs.gnome.org, I will personally help as much as I can with the migration process. Loosing current layer

Okay, Getting stuck in DFW because of weather was frustrating, but it meant that I got Inkscape stuff done :) I've got it so that I new window does not pop up for script based effects. But, you loose the current layer (and a warning prints on the console). Not good. I think what I want to do is be able to find every window that references a particular document, and figure out what their current layer is. I couldn't figure out a way to do that. It looks like the list I want is in the Inkscape::Application, but I can only get that through a private variable in SPView (or Desktop). Am I missing something on how this should work? --Ted

What are your development tools?

Hi everybody, As I have some time until July for "doing nothing" a few hours a day ;) , I'd like to volunteer for doing something, ie. Inkscape things. I'm learning C++ currently (Stroustrup's book). I use Ubuntu Linux on i386 and did quite some programming using Python and PyGTK in the last few months. What is needed / do you use aside from cvs, g++ and a text editor? (And what text editor, as I used Emacs, tried Vim, and use gedit currently. No flamewars please, I'm glad there are so few of them here :o) , just "I use editor foo (because ...)".) Do you use Valgrind, any test suites, gdb / ddd ... ? Where do I start to learn how to use them? Also, do you recommend some literature / books, as I did not (and most probably will not) study computer science? (I have a "Design Patterns", Gamma et al, here.) I have a small budget for good material. I also wonder about more exotic things - do you print out code you wrote for review (my printer doesn't work atm), do sports, drink coffee (I'm not going to do that, just wondering), gather regularly on Jabber - anything that might be of interest in terms of a programmer's life and how to get / remain productive. Hey all! Since we will be releasing a new version of Inkscape in the near future, we need to have a new about screen done. So... we will now have our second official contest for the Inkscapers on DeviantART. If you are not currently a DeviantArt member and are interested, please use the link below to sign up to be able to show us what you can do. Basics: *Our goal is to show off what inkscape can do in a somewhat artistic manner with the intent of giving credit to all of the project contributors. *We also recommend using a current CVS version (nightly build) to attempt to show off some new features. Nightly builds can be obtained from our downloads page (link is below) under the "Development Versions" section. *Upload your submission to your gallery or scraps on DeviantART and post a link and description at the link below. Inkscape Project joins Google's Summer of Code

Google has accepted the Inkscape project as an available mentor for their Summer of Code program. In this program, students can undertake a coding project for the mentoring project. Google will award $4500 to the student for completion of the work, and donate $500 to the sponsoring organization. John Cliff was instrumental in motivating us to get involved, and will be serving as the primary coordinator and point of contact. He will help link students up with Inkscape developers and keep an eye on the overall process. Translation doubts

Hi, I'm updating the spanish translation for the 0.42 release and I'm running into some doubts: /src/dialogs/tiledialog.cpp - line 817: "Equal Height": Is this a verb like in: "I'm going to make the height equal, I will equal the heights.", or rather "These objects have the same heights, they have equal heights" - line 886: "Equal Width": idem - BBox: Is this short for "bounding box"? Hello, I'm trying to create a viewer based on the inkscape SVG viewer. I based my viewer on the code in inkview.cpp. But during execution I always get a segmentation fault when I call sp_document_new. I create a LayoutRenderer and on that object I call the function renderLayout. Starting the Inkscape 0.42 release process

We had tentatively selected today as the starting date for the Inkscape 0.42 release process. I sense people have been looking forward to this day, and are ready to see a new Inkscape release. :-) It's been quite a while since our last release, and so many of our newer developers don't have first hand experience with our release processes. Here's a brief run down of what we usually do: First, we enter a wrap up phase called the "Frost", where developers are encouraged to bring any features they've been working on to a suitable state for formal release, stop adding any new features, and to start focusing on bug fixing. Generally this phase only lasts for a week or two. Next, we enter a bug fixing phase called the "Feature Freeze". We identify some bug fixing goals, using a scoring system that folks have found to give a fun challenge. A list of "must fix bugs" is also generated, that the developers want to see fixed before a release is allowed; we usually don't get every one of these bugs fixed, but we certainly try to leave as few open as possible. I will be posting daily reports on our bug status as we go. Translations, documentation, release notes, and so forth also need to be updated and finalized. This phase can go on for several weeks, depending on how bad the bugs are. Once all of the must fix bugs are fixed and all the objectives have been met, we enter the "Hard Freeze" phase. Two "Freeze Wardens" are named and all development is done as patches submitted to the freeze wardens for review and integration. This phase is intended to be quite short - a matter of days. This is intended to give us a final QA focus. Finally, we tag and branch the codebase, create the packages, and proceed with the release. :-) For Inkscape 0.42, I estimate that going through this process will take on the order of one to two months. It is driven largely by how quickly the bugs can be fixed, so please plan on contributing some time to this effort this month, and hopefully we can make swift progress towards our goal. Bryce

Dear developers of Inkscape, I have made one observation, that could help to improve Inkscape. I noticed that EPS files that are output by the `Save as' dialog start with ,---- | %!PS-Adobe-3.0 `---- However, the documentation for GSview (for instance) states, that EPS files start with ,---- | %!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0 `---- and that is one of several prerequisites for an usable EPS. I'm far from being an expert on EPS, however inserting `EPSF-3.0' manually did for me the trick to make GSview treat the exported EPS files as real EPS. I use Inkscape (Inkscape0505310200.zip) on a MS-Windows platform. Franz.

Just as a matter of interest, I now have CVS building on a 10.3 machine with fink unstable. The only dependency that wasn't in fink was libgc; I downloaded and installed 6.5 the old-fashioned way and it worked fine. Note that (when building using fink libraries) you will need to specify -I/sw/include and -L/sw/lib in your CXXFLAGS and LDFLAGS when running configure. -mental

Heya, I just read your nice interview at groklaw (http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20050130002908154). First of all, this is really exciting, but I wonder if you could write up more about what is needed of Inkscape for this new format. I see in your interview you note that there is a needed filter for Inkscape, but it is not clarified what this means. I'm cc'ing the Inkscape development list about this. I just wonder how this OpenDocument format (the newly standardized open office xml format) relates to Inkscape and what you are asking to be done. Or do you want a filter that say one has an SVG file, then one can convert that to an OpenDocument file. I don't think that would be difficult. But, what about OpenOffice support for the SVG file format? Please copy me and/or the Inkscape-devel list and I will make sure they get the response. dialogs cleanup

Before we can think about a release, one thing we absolutely must do is clean up the current mess with dialogs. Everyone who did dialogs recently (and there were a lot) did it in their own incompatible way. (Personally, I attribute this to the lack of attention and leadership from the initiators of the gtkmm transition, but there's no use to argue about that now; let's just fix what we have.) Recently I've been working on the Dialog and DialogManager classes in ui/dialog, and I almost fixed them with regard to things like transientizing, remembering geometry, and F12 behavior. There are remaining issues still but I'm pretty sure I'll be able to fix them. Unfortunately, many dialogs do not use these classes or use them in a wrong way. The old gtk dialogs need not be touched at this time; they are OK as they are, and we can always convert them later. What needs to be fixed urgently is the recenty added gtkmm dialogs, all of which are broken in different ways. The simplest dialog to use as a template is ui/dialog/messages.cpp; another is ui/dialog/memory.cpp. To create a dialog, you need to pass the prefs path (path in the preferences.xml for the dialog settings; make sure it exists in preferences-skeleton.h) and the verb that creates the dialog (make sure it exists in verbs.h/cpp). E.g.: Messages::Messages() : Dialog ("dialogs.messages", SP_VERB_DIALOG_DEBUG) You also need to register the dialog's factory in DIalogManager constructor and to make sure its verb in verbs.cpp does the right thing: case SP_VERB_DIALOG_DEBUG: dt->_dlg_mgr->showDialog("Messages"); break; Also don't forget to remove your own F12 handlers, event handles, transientizing code, title setting, size setting etc. if you have it in your dialog classes. This is all in Dialog now. Not only will this stuff finally work as it must, but this will lead to a significant reducing of code. Here are the dialogs that need to be converted: Align: Unless Aubanel Monnier (who coded it initially) shows up, I think I'll have to take this one. View/Scripts and Path/Trace Bitmap: Bob, these are yours, so please take them. This needs to be done ASAP because currently these two are totally disfunctional - they don't show up when you call them. (This may be because they used ui/dialog code in some partial way and this is now broken after my changes there.) Object/Grid Arrange: John, this one is yours, please convert it - also ASAP because it's broken in the same way as Bob's ones. Object/Swatches and Help/About Extensions: Jon, these are yours. I know you did your own implementation but we now need to unify things. You can move whatever useful code you have into Dialog, but _that_ must be the root class of all dialogs now. No more duplication please. This will also fix the many problems your dialogs now have (such as popping up after being closed when any new dialog is opened). Jon, Bob, John: Please respond to this message with your estimate as to when you will be able to work on this. If you cannot handle this now or in foreseeable future, we'll need to call up volunteers for this work. Of course, please also voice any questions or objections you might have. translatable strings

As you may know, Inkscape strings are facing a small problem : at the moment, the string _"H" is used in different contexts: as an abbreviation for Hue and for Height (see my clumsy patch proposal : http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1203796&group_id=9…) After taking a look at different mailing list and at Inkscape's wiki, it appears that the wiki links offers some good indications (cool). See http://www.gtkmm.org/gtkmm2/docs/tutorial/html/ch20s03.html in "Same strings, different semantics" But the solution suggested (adding some extra characters) is not really welcome. A much better approach can be foud here : http://developer.gnome.org/doc/tutorials/gnome-i18n/developer.html in "Don't use too short messages". So if you are OK with it, I'd be very interested at: - first improve the current state with short strings (XYWH, RGB, RGBA, HSV...): my plan would be creating some xywh_string = _"XYWH", rgb_string = _"RGB"... strings that would be translatable and then pick from those strings in the code replace H by xywh_string[4] or hsv_string[3] depending on the context - then improve our conformance against gnome HIG with : - increase the use of plural syntax (see "Plurals" in gnome-i18n) - improve the way Inkscape manages marked up string (see "Avoid markup wherever possible" in gnome-i18n) It would be a good opportunity for me improving my understanding of the code of Inkscape without the hazard of breaking everything. Spanish translators suggest that we include the html/png versions of all tutorials into the Inkscape distribution as well. What do others think? I'm afraid this will blow the size considerably, especially if we include all languages (as we do for SVG tutorials). Maybe it's time to create language-specific distributions, at least for French and Spanish? Does anyone have experience with automating such things? Path Parsing

Bulia, this morning there was another path parsing bug in the tracker and so there is another patch. I have a path parsing question that I do not think is answered by the svg spec. All commands may be followed by any number of sets of parameters. So L0,0 3,4 7,2 is actually L0,0 L3,4 L7,2 Moveto implies Lineto. So M0,0 3,4 7,2 is actually M0,0 L3,4 L7,2 How should one interpret this: L0,0 L3,4 L7,2 Z 1,5 It would seem to me that it should be L0,0 L3,4 L7,2 Z M0,0 L1,5 Because Moveto implies Lineto and Closepath should imply Moveto because the spec says that any following commands begin a new subpath at the previous subpaths initial point. Project Status Sunday, May 15, 2005 Coding activity appears to have picked up quite a bit over this past month, with 20,000 lines of code added. Looks like there's also been a surge of code documentation activity, with 7,000 lines added, or a 10% increase from what we'd had. Very cool! I hear SourceForge is getting ready to roll out their new statistics system, but apparently this hasn't happened yet. ;-) We're going to continue in development mode for the remainder of the month, and then around June 1st will enter into a bug fix mode to start preparing for a release. We've got over 200 bugs open. I'm not sure what we should set as a goal for the release, but hopefully we can knock that count down significantly. When I am running Inkscape in GNOME on my Mac (installed through fink), I cannot open any files unless I specify files from the command line from the --file option. If I try to use the "open file" dialog, inkscape freezes, eventually a dialog box opens up saying that Inkscape encountered an error, but that is also frozen, and if I am lucky another dialog opens up giving me the option to force quit (i guess this is a GNOME dialog box). Using the "kill" command works otherwise without a problem. 1 - Start Inkscape in GNOME running on fink 2 - Click "File Open" Icon OR 1 - Start Inkscape in GNOME running on fink 2 - Go to "File" menu, and click "Open" The odd thing is that this only happens when I run Inkscape from GNOME (within Xnest, or when running X11 in full screen mode). If I run Inkscape with quartz-wm, no GNOME, things work fine (except, of course, that drop down menus appear behind the windows). Has anyone encountered this before? Marcus

I have attached my initial draft of a LaTeX export internal extension I wrote. It currently uses PSTricks so is very similar to the PostScript extension. It currently does not implement gradients, transparency, text, images and has some problems with unit conversion and seems to be rotated awkwardly. During the startup it says that extensions will be disabled. I use WinXP German and have ActivePerl and Python in my path. Printer dialog interface

My wife and young children do not know command line Unix. At http://developer.gimp.org/NEWS, one thing jumped on me: - added an option to make the dock windows transient to the active image display I haven't tried it yet, but from the description, this is exactly what Inkscape does for its dialogs. FINALLY. For me, this was by far the worst usability problem with GIMP (and with Sodipodi/Inkscape, until I invented the transientize hack). About a year ago I spent quite some time trying to persuade them that this hack, while being a hack, is still better than no solution at all. Looks like they have finally agreed :) This is big news, even if this option is off by default. At least now we can be telling people that GIMP is not really that much worse than Inkscape, if you know the right option to enable :) It's also good that now that we both implement this behavior, we can exchange the code and fixes, and maybe join our forces to make it less hack-ish and more standard. -- bulia byak Inkscape. dangerous duplication - please fix

(I'm not sure if this will get through to the list, so I'm cc'ing those who did commits to the relevant dir) Today I reviewed our po files and noticed a lot of new UI strings coming from the ui/ directory. This needs to be fixed immediately, or at least before we declare the string freeze and call the translators to update translations. These new strings are really a very bad idea for several reasons: - They are duplicate of strings found elsewhere, but often non-exact duplicates (or their originals have changed since they were copied). This means a lot of useless extra work for translators, dangers of further desynchronization, etc. - These strings are sometimes "fixed" wrongly. For example in stock-items.cpp, someone wrote "Select _Original Clone" instead of the "Select _Original". This "correction" simply does not make sense; what is meant is "select the original _of the_ clone" but even in that form it's wrong because it is applicable not only to clones. - Most strings in ui/view/edit.cpp have hard-coded shortcuts in them, e.g "Next zoom (from history of zooms) (Shift+`)". This is absolutely intolerable, for obvious reasons. The old code has special provisions for generating shortcut strings for the UI, and losing that is a serious regression. I can see several approaches to fixing this, please choose one or more as appropriate: 1. If this ui/ code is unused and is not going to be used, simply delete it and regenerate the po's. 2. If it is currently unused but may be used later, at least remove it from the list of po sources, so it does not contaminate the po files, until it is fixed properly. 3. Rewrite the code so that, where possible, it takes the strings from the standard central location. For example all verbs have their commands and tooltips in verbs.cpp, so copying them over into ui/stock-items.cpp is very very wrong. 4. Where 3. is not appropriate and you want to move some of the strings into some new code or structure, do this ONLY when that new code or structure is fully workable, and then immediately delete them from the source location, so that there's no duplication ever. Until then, use some placeholder strings in your code and make sure they don't get into the po files. As you may have noticed, I'm _constantly_ revising and copyediting the UI strings, because it's such an important aspect of the UI. Please don't undermine my efforts. Inkscape 0.42 and gtkmm

Hi all, Recently I've been appraising how much work it's going to take to achieve the goal we set for 0.42 to get converted to gtkmm. The choice to switch to gtkmm was made at the very start of the project, so it's always been one of our biggest goals. Several actions we took in our earlier releases were geared towards this end. In fact, we've been planning to convert to gtkmm for several releases now. Of course, this is not a trivial undertaking. Initially we approached doing it piecemeal, one dialog at a time. Several dialogs got converted, but we noticed that each dialog turned out surprisingly different than the others. This is where I got involved - to try to help establish some common practices for implementing dialogs. I also figured that even though I had other stuff I wanted to work on (i.e. markers and extensions), for project priorities it was probably more valuable to pitch in with getting progress on the gtkmm stuff. Today I think the new dialog code is pretty good. There is a base class we can use for dialogs, that provides the common behaviors, and a DialogManager to better track their memory and instantiation. The individual dialogs still need to all be converted over, but we've already got a handful converted, and there's another handful that are already in gtkmm but just need to be restyled to work with the new code. So now, the rest of the dialog conversion work *can* be done piece by piece, without risking problematic inconsistencies. However, converting to gtkmm means much more than just converting each dialog; the main interface (toolbars, buttons, canvas, etc.) also needs to be turned into gtkmm code. This requires conversion of SPView, SPSvgView, SPDesktop, and SPDesktopView. SPDesktop alone is a pretty big project; I've been hammering at it bit by bit for the past few months but feel like I've barely made a dent. It's pretty frustrating; I feel like I'm pulling the proverbial thread from the sweater. Anyway, given what it looks like needs to be done, I don't really have the time/patience/energy to see the View/Desktop work through to completion by myself. There are other things I want to do for Inkscape and Open Clip Art that are higher priority to me. If someone else wants to work on it, I can share what I've learned and explain what it looks like needs to be done. Finally, given this, I see no point in continuing with the goal of completing gtkmm for 0.42. It's just too much effort, compared with the number of people committed to working on it. I hate the idea of having to yet again bump it to the next release, though. If it couldn't be achieved for 0.39, 0.40, 0.41, and 0.42, why would we think it could be done for 0.43? I think that given the lack of activity, the most logical thing is to just postpone it indefinitely. The work just seems to get in the way of making releases, and given that people are more interested in working on misc. individual things rather than gtkmm, anyway, there's little value in setting it as a goal; it just sets up expectations that are proving unachievable. The desire for a release is clearly much higher than the desire to finish implementing gtkmm at this time. Thus, I would like to propose we scrap the remaining plans for 0.42 in the roadmap, and go ahead and start the 0.42 release process. Opinions? Bryce

Hi A few days ago, I've submitted small patch and Bulia has kindly commited it. This patch was focusing on /src/select-toolbar.cpp so that X, Y, W (idth), H (eight) strings become translatable. The problem is that now, in all .pot file, H can conflict with H (ue) of the color tab of clonetiler.cpp dialog. See the following extract of fr.po # Hue (in HSV) # Dialog item #: src/dialogs/clonetiler.cpp:2170 src/select-toolbar.cpp:424 msgid "H" msgstr "T" and the attached screenshots So I'm afraid my idea of having those strings translatable was not so good, and my patch, a dummy one... Defaulting gnome-vfs to yes

I've committed a change to configure.ac which defaults the GNOME VFS feature to 'on' if automake detects that the Gnome VFS library is present on the system. Keep an eye out for bugs; I've fixed all the ones I've known about. As a reminder, the GNOME VFS feature makes it possible to specify a URL on the commandline when starting inkscape. I.e.: $ inkscape http://mysite.org/foobar.svg It will load the svg file via http into memory and launch Inkscape. There is no support for this in the File Open dialog at this time; it still works only with local files. I don't have any plans to change that, so if you want it, feel free to add it. Bryce

Doesn't allow external stylesheets, doesn't allow more than one <style> element. (Or rather it ignores all but one of the <style> elements, possibly changing which one it respects based on which was most recently re-read.) See notes below. - No editing interface other than the XML editor. The limitation of just one author stylesheet per document is an oversight in libcroco datastructures. Dodji (libcroco maintainer) agrees it's a libcroco bug, and the CRCascade or CRStyleSheet data structure can be changed accordingly. (The way most of libcroco implements `list of T' is for the T struct to get next/prev members, i.e. add next & prev members to CRStyleSheet, add cr_stylesheet_* functions for accessing this list, and leave CRCascade unchanged. Not saying I like the current scheme, but I think we should use the same scheme throughout libcroco, and consider changing the scheme throughout libcroco at once.) Meanwhile, Inkscape will also need changing: SPStyleElem's read_content method will need to update just its own CRStyleSheet, and we'll need to make sure that the list of stylesheets in the CRCascade matches the order of their occurrence in the document, so that we get the right precedence when stylesheets conflict with each other. I don't know the right way of handling external stylesheets. Does any other part of inkscape allow external xlink:href's ? libcroco's CRInput either already allows URLs or at least has it planned. (I don't have the source code handy here.) Handling @media rules and <style>'s media attribute is a Simple Matter of Programming. gtkmm - DialogManager in SPDesktop

I've added the DialogManager into the old SPDesktop. This means that the current codebase can now use the new dialogs via DialogManager. It also means that the way is now open for anyone that wishes to create new gtkmm dialogs using the new dialog code. I have hooked in one dialog - Messages (aka ishmal's Debug Dialog). I chose this because it's a finished dialog, and because I figure it's not as critical as some of the drawing dialogs, in case it misbehaves. If you wish to create a new dialog, please feel free to use the Messages dialog as an example. To add a new dialog, the process is straightforward: 1. Create a .cpp and .h for your dialog in src/ui/dialog/. The dialog must derive from Dialog (see dialog.*). 2. Add your class to DialogManager. You do this by adding an #include to dialog-manager.cpp, add a member pointer to the DialogManager class in dialog-manager.h, and a get*Dialog() routine (you can just cut and paste from one of the other dialogs). 3. Add a menu item and shortcut key for your dialog. See verbs.cpp and interface.cpp. I think you'll find that creating dialogs with the new system can be done in about half the code as before, and maintenance is greatly increased since the common boilerplate code is factored out into base classes. Also, the classes are simpler in that they have fewer pointers, and don't need to handle their own instantiation; DialogManager takes care of this. Fewer pointers and less need for memory management implies fewer opportunities for bugs to creep in. Also, since DialogManager is used for accessing dialogs, there is no need to include the dialog headers in other parts of the code; theoretically this should cut down on include header nesting and make compilation work a bit faster. Some caveats: The preferences loading/saving code isn't implemented. This means that dialogs won't "remember" their settings between program runs. However, there is code to track this info in there, so should be straightforward to hook up if anyone wishes. As well, some of the code for transient behavior is there, but not all, so transient behavior is probably not right. Feel free to fix; it's all implemented in the Dialog base class so only has to be fixed in one place, and then all dialogs will behave correctly. Bryce

English tutorials converted

May 1st, 2005 — Thanks to the active help from the community, all English tutorials that we had in SVG are now converted to DocBook! From within Inkscape, they are still available as fully editable SVG which you can play with, but having the DocBook source makes it easy to produce any other formats or renditions automatically. In particular, all converted tutorials are now availble in HTML, linked from our Documentation page. What's next? We have several of the tutorials translated into several languages. It's best to have the source specifications and the script that generates them in the source tree, and have them be authoritative. And generate the code as part of the build process. Because Things Will Change, and the last thing you want is to tempt people into manual hacking of generated code. Do see if you can hoist some of the stuff that's currently generated into non-generated superclasses though. Anything that gets repeated multiple places is screaming for refactoring. The platonic ideal is that there should only be one place in the entire codebase which is authoritative for a particular pattern of code. -mental

Results of comparing zoomed out with regular zoom: regular: memory percent: 6.6% -> 23.6% buffers/cache: 224 -> 310 zoomed out: memory percent: 5% -> 12.5% buffers/cache: 217 -> 254 The zoomed out numbers are very similar to the numbers for just previewing each file. So it appears that you are correct that the memory problem is in the renderer. Ok ... I think I fixed all the bugs in CompositeNodeObserver, so I've comitted my patch. I've not gone through and verified that it fixes all the layer etc. bugs yet, but if it doesn't it should at least make the remaining work of fixing them much easier. The commit ensures that two of my "five invariants" are now observed: * a listener should not receive events that occurred before its registration * a listener should not receive any events at all once it is deregistered Hmm, and actually also that "fifth and a half" invariant: it should be safe for a listener to unregister itself. The patch also had the effect of disabling the 'is_interactive' flag for attribute changes. However, the work I'd done since it had been introduced made a (much cleaner!) replacement very easy. [ I've not actually entirely purged the is_interactive flag yet, since that will require changing a lot of files, but I will do so once we're satisfied that these changes are working out. ] I've been testing most of the night, but please test yourself and see if you turn up anything. I'm still worried that some code somewhere was written that inadvertantly depended on a violation of the first invariant above. -mental

I just thought I would check in and see if there is anything new going on in the extension realm. (Ted, have you found any time to start working on the interpreter property and absolute paths?) I have recently created an effect that draws microtonal and multiscale stringed instrument fretboards. Sounds very useful doesn't it :) I have also started working on an effect to do isometric path extrusions. I think may have taken this idea as far as I am able. Either way though, the memory keeps going up as I go through more slides. Set the INKSCAPE_DEBUG_LOG environment variable to a filename, and Inkscape will write a structured XML outline of its activities there. You can take advantage of this when debugging your own code. For example, if you want to highlight the changes that happen during a function, you add this to the top: Debug::EventTracker<Debug::SimpleEvent> tracker("my-func"); (if the function isn't inside the ::Inkscape namespace, you'll need to fully-qualify the type names) After you recompile, any (logged) events that happen during a call to your function will appear grouped under a <my-func> tag in the log. For example: <my-func> <set-attribute node="element(0x8956a218)=svg:g(#g123)" name="foo" value="bar"/> </my-func> (How it works: the <my-func> tag is written from the EventTracker's constructor, and </my-func> is written from its destructor when it goes out of scope.) If you want to log fancier stuff (e.g. taking advantage of attributes) you'll currently need to write your own subclass of Debug::Event and use that instead of Debug::SimpleEvent. Note that EventTracker will not create a Debug::Event object unless the log is turned on, so you don't pay a performance penalty when you're not using it. See src/xml/simple-node.cpp for some examples (which are sadly probably more complicated than they need to be). -mental

Memory Problems

I have a presentation of about 50 slides. When I go through the slides with inkview, it quickly eats up all of my memory (512 mb). I dont know a proper way to describe the memory usage, so I will list some info: Memory only goes up when I change slides. If it sit on the same slide, it is fine. If I just go back and forth between two slides, memory will increase each time I go back and forth, until it eventually levels off. Then I can flip back and forth between those two slides without any increase in memory. When I flip to more slides, memory goes up again. I can go through the whole presentation once, and memory will go to a certain value. Going backwards, or going to the start and showing slides again will continue to increase the memory. Eventually, after playing with the slides for about 15 minutes, inkview will crash, and print "Killed" to the console. I am basing my statements about memory on "ps aux" and "free -m". I will be glad to do anything else that anyone thinks will help explain the memory usage. I will be glad to send the presentation to anyone also. It is about 7 mb uncompressed. layer add hang

The layer addition hang appears to be due to the failure of the "change handlers should only be called for events that happen after they are registered" invariant I mentioned. Basically what is happening is that on a layer switch, the layer selectors each register a new handler (after unregistering the old one), but those handlers immediately get called for the event that has already happened, repeating the process and creating an infinite treadmill. The obvious fix is to defer addition of new change handlers to the list until after all the existing handlers have been called. Of course that is not a sufficient guarantee for the recursive case, but hopefully there are no recursive changes involved here. -mental

Hi, As the latest nightly build break shows, I'm not plugged into Inkscape development enough to keep the specfiles accurate. In particular the packages broke because I was still trying to copy the lib directory which no longer exists. Maintaining these specfiles is trivial. If somebody wanted to take them over I'd be happy to help and also happy to continue running the nightly build system. If anybody is interested please let me know. thanks -mike

This is a follow-up to a post made back in January regarding Inkscape's presence on DeviantArt (DA)... Over time, more and more artwork is being submitted to DA that was created using Inkscape. Since we had initially started the "Inkscape" group/account on DA, we quickly realized that there are two groups of people that have exclusive needs to be met. 1) The DA Inkscape artists needed a hub to share work, talk inkscape, have friendly competitions, etc. & 2) The developers and new users of Inkscape need a place to view/show a gallery of quality images made in Inkscape by the DA community. The problem with having one account is that it DA has policies such as restricting the use of favorites from members of a group, which given the mutually restrictive needs (due to their policies), we needed a separation of interests. So... onto the announcement. http://inkscapers.deviantart.com/ is now *the* place for all DA Artists that are Inkscapers to gather for all of the fun. plan for Postscript import

I've been examining our options for importing postscript without requiring a bajillion evil dependencies, and I think I've arrived at a plan. 1) write a postscript to SVG converter in Postscript and use that for our Postscript importer 2) write a bare-bones standalone Postscript interpreter (doesn't need to implement any rendering, just provide a dummy postscipt device) and ship it with Inkscape Until #2 is finished, we can run the converter using Ghostscript, which is still two fewer dependencies than before. I've got prototypes for both #1 and #2 in CVS in the module 'ps3convert'. The prototype interpreter is written in Ruby and isn't really functional yet, but the converter (currently encapsulated in the ps-svg shell script) already works for the basic stuff. Running the converter: ./ps-svg blah.ps > blah.svg Caveats with the converter: * it's a proof-of-concept; hence the code is horribly ugly * it doesn't yet do text, gradients or clipping paths * the image in the output SVG appears above the top of the page, so you have to scroll up to see it Also one last caveat: I'm not promising any timetables on this stuff. So don't bug me to finish it. You'll probably find giving me patches to be the more productive alternative. -mental

hi, looking at the code, the mapping of the xml node types to GTypes seems a bit inflexible and assumes there's a one to one relationship. i was thinking of using a specialized SPGroup to implement a feature, but when the group operation is invoked from the UI it only adds the svg:g xml node; a listener callback is invoked and an SPGroup is created. i could use my own tag, but this would mess up other svg viewers unnecessarily (the feature i want just has to do with how the group is handled during interaction not with its display). ideally, i'd want to use something like <svg:g inkscape:variant="my special group">...</svg:g> so i'd have to use the element's attributes as a secondary key to cause it to create MySpecialSPGroup with modified behaviour. the alternative would be to use a different tag or add the new behaviour to the normal SPGroup (which seems bad from a design perspective). any thoughts? regards, rob ---- Robert Melby uucp: ...!{decvax,hplabs,ncar,purdue,rutgers}!org!arcsin!rm

Jon, It's good to see the swatches being worked on. Shift+click now works, which is excellent. Some comments: - please remove the padding between the swatches (not only does this waste space, but also makes the colors harder to discern due to a well-known optical illusion) - please make it remember the display mode and the loaded palette across sesssions (and the window size/placement too, of course) - please do something with the menu and X buttons, they are rather ugly (why don't you just copy them over from Gimp, they're nice there) - please fix it to not display the scrollbars when they are not needed - could you add a "no color" button to the beginning of each palette, which would set "none" to either fill or stroke - what is eek-preview.cpp? is it temporary? if not could you please rename it to something more useful? -- bulia byak Inkscape. gtkmm / TreeView

Hi Murray, Speaking of gtkmm, one observation/request: We've noticed for Inkscape it would be __really__ handy to create a certain kind of dialog using the TreeView control. For things like the layer editor, extensions, preferences, XML editor, and so forth, we need hierarchical management of various XML and SVG trees. Basically, these dialogs use a TreeView widget on the left, which allow navigating through the tree and selecting an item, and then the right side of the dialog is updated to display widgets appropriate to that selection. This is a uber-common style of dialog for file or config management, etc. etc. Pull up Inkscape's XML Editor to get an idea of what we need. However... The problem has been that hooking up TreeView with all the code to manage the widgets, signals, and XML tree looks really intimidating. We've not been able to find an Inkscape volunteer brave enough to dive into it. Anyway, my thought is that this style of dialog would probably be extremely useful to other gtkmm users (in fact, I'd been planning to contribute it back to gtkmm if/when it got developed), and that perhaps the gtkmm team might be able to help in creating it? I think we could give a lot of ideas on the design and of course lots of feedback and testing as we incorporate it. NEW: more pen&pencil tweaking

Some time ago I switched the "add mode" on by default when you go to Pen or Pencil tools. This makes it easier to continue the selected path, but if you just want to draw a new path, this may be annoying because it insists on creating a subpath of selected path. So now I changed that behavior so that: o When you start drawing outside of the end markers of the selected path, that path is deselected and you are drawing a new path (not a new subpath of the selected path as before). Hi there, Pasting style (Shift-Ctrl-V) on text objects does not change the font family of the target. For instance, I have a text object A in Times New Roman, italic, size 12. I want to make it Arial, regular, size 18, just as another text object B in my document. So I copy text object B, mark text object A and hit (Shift-Ctrl-V). I expected object A to be Arial, regular, size 18 now. It is regular and size 18, however, still Times New Roman. Bug or feature? The problem is how to get the parameters in and out of the Inkscape preferences file. If you look on the menu, there is a way to call the last effect with the previous settings -- this is a very useful feature that I'd like to maintain. In order to do that, Inkscape needs to know the extension's preferences. I'm not sure of the best way to get this done. The only way that I can think of is to have the script return the preference values to STDOUT, but that doesn't feel like a good solution. Ideas are welcome. --Ted

Hi Inkscapers, i've submitted a few patches with some French translations (I apologize for having worked so slowly): - update of .po file (I had warned Fred, the latest updater of this file last week) - synchronization with latest (well, until a few days ago) of basic and advanced tutorial the other tutorial are also arriving - added French to .nsi file - translated /Hacking & /Readme to French So my remaining tasks are : - finalising the remaining tutorials, and take the opportunity to update once more fr.po file (I really think that having some coherent vocabulary between software and tutorials is important) - convert them to docbook - update keys.xml I was wondering if some French-speaking guys would agree to share some efforts on translating the different release notes, plus some other readme files spread in the cvs. If yes please contact me so that we can synchronize on this regards, matiphas

stupid problem creating woven ribbons

Hey folks, I've just started using this wonderful masterpiece of a drawing tool, but soon ran into a big problem. I wanted to create a web design with interwoven ribbons, and when I saw the calligraphy tool I thought my problems where solved. But one object can only have one z-index, not multiple - which does makes sense, but means the ribbon is either on top of or below another. So I thought, mmh... I might just slice them up in between and give the parts different z-orders, which actually worked. The problem is, I want the ribbons to have an outline, and so the seam has an outline too. And I have no clue how to get rid of that now - and can not continue on my design :( I have posted this on the request feature list already, but sorry I am so eager to get this behind and go on drawing... so I'm wondering what do you devs say about that? ..and thx for such a great program ;) Marcel

Hi, In Inkscape 0.41 on Suse 9.2, I always set the rulers and everything I can find on measurement to millimeters. Only the cursor coordinates, in the bottom left corner of the main window, is shown in some other unit (100 mm = 125 units). Is it possible to set this to mm's too? Tutorial conversion

We started to convert Inkscape tutorials into DocBook, with SVG and HTML (and potentially other formats) generated automatically by XSLT stylesheets. The Basic tutorial in English was the first to be converted; here it is in HTML: http://inkscape.org/doc/basic/tutorial-basic.html (obviously there's no interactivity in HTML, but at least it's now printable). If you want to help, pick your favorite tutorial (drop a note to the devel list first, to make sure it's not yet taken), check out the doc-docbook module from our CVS and follow the instructions in the file README to convert it into DocBook and extract illustrations as separate SVG files. This is simple work but it will be great help to the project, since it will make much easier to update tutorials, translate them into other languages, and write new ones. Oh, and if you want to edit or translate or tutorial, please wait until it's converted and work with the DocBook version. (Better yet, convert it yourself :) -- bulia byak Inkscape. Now back to the text copying discussion. Everything was going fine for quite some time. Now I find that there are a few paragraphs in the advanced tutorial and in the tracing tutorial that I just can't copy. In tracing I cannot copy "the user will see the three filter options" to the end. In advanced I cannot copy the final three paragraphs of the editing paths section. Is it just me? Aaron Spike

Wiki style breakage

The recent changes (edit 303 of the main page) to the Wiki made it 'break' for me. Basically, the page no longer plays nice with narrow windows. http://inkscape.org/wiki_uploads/WikiAtWork.png Remember, many people don't browse with windows maximized. It's well known in the print world that landscape mode is not conducive to reading (which is why magazines, books, newspapers, etc. avoid it). So be sure to check any style changes with windows both ways. Thanks.

Hi all, Just a note to say that svgslice has been updated: http://www.digitalunleashed.com/downloads/svgslice/svgslice_0.12.tar.bz2 No inkscape extension yet (I'm working on that next) but it does fix a few bugs, in case anyone has been struggling with it. There are four demo files included, and the coordinates of the slicing in the last one are incorrect. The problem seems to be that Inkscape doesn't respect the units you select in the toolbar for rectangles, but perhaps I'm misunderstanding something there. Currently, I'm not handling unit conversion, and the different inkscape unit options (document, grid, etc.) all have to be set to the same units. I'm sure there's some unit I could treat this as and then convert, but it looks like a bug, since it's in different units from everything else, and seems to resist change. Autogui isn't fully functional yet, so I don't know if it should be put in a screenshot. If you want to put these effects into CVS it is fine by me. I will continue tweaking these and adding more effects as ideas come to me. As long as CVS gets a fresh copy occasionlly, I think it would be great. I haven't figured out how to write an inx file that works on Windows and Linux. So as they are the effects only work on Linux. As part of a school project, we are to develop a software which converts SVG files to PostScript. After looking for and testing different solutions, we figured out that Inkscape was our favorite to do this job. Nevertheless, Inkscape does not come up to all our expectations. Therefore, we would like to do some improvements which could benefit the whole community of Inkscape users. First of all, we wish to improve the management of fonts in the conversion process. In addition, we intend to add backup for transparency and superimposing in the export to PS (likely the way of Adobe Illustrator). Eventually, if not short of time then, we could focus on enhancing the Inkscape command-line interface (in the idea of processing many files in a row (batch process)). Now, here we go : if anyone around has already worked on these issues, and is ready to communicate with us, so that we might start on a firm and good foundation, we are more ready than ever to listen to everything you've got : information, advice, tips, whatever. I have considered using svg (partly to learn), but instead of actually coding the necessary svg strings directly in the source of my application, I would like to employ a somewhat higher level library. I.e. instead of fprintf(svg_stream , "<path id=\"%s\" fill=\"%s\" ....>\n",id,fill_type); I would like to do (using a hypothetical svg library): svg_path(svg_object , id , fill_type); Now, my question is whether Inkscape has (i.e. is built on) a library which somehow provides this functionality; or if you have another library to recommend which would provide this kind of functionality. As you can see from the code snippets above my language of choice(?) is C, so it must be something which can be linked from C. Okay, from both Bryce's and Bulia's e-mail I don't think that I was entirely clear. I was only thinking about extensions that are distributed from inkscpae.org, I could definitely see others providing extension packages or collections of their own. (I expect KPT to start shipping Inkscape extensions any time now) I understand Bulia's argument of this being a little too early, I think that if we take that approach we should definitely decided when is mature enough. Release 0.43? When there are 100 extensions? Though, I could definitely see waiting until we have more. Refactoring in action

Just thought I'd toss out this note "Refactoring in action" or "How I implemented an RFE in under an hour" This morning I changed things so that the CMYK color slider mode now has values that range form 0 through 100 instead of 0 through 255. In and of itself that was no big deal, and the ammount of code change needed was minimal. What is interesting, however, are the principles that came into play in doing it. ------------------------ I addressed RFE 994177 "CMYK 0 - 100 not 0 - 255". The first thing was to see if it was needed. Having worked with various media places and artist before, this was a simple one to see the utility of. Not earth-shattering or anything, but something that would make artist and designers working in print a little more comfortable. So, yes, it should be done at some point. Next question was how much effort would it take. Since I'm in the middle of addressing color issues in general, a lot was fresh in my mind. Then looking into the code I saw it was in very good shape, and prime for reuse. So the level of effort needed should be low. Now came the fun part. As I went into the code, it was pretty clean and easy to understand. More importantly, it already was setup to mainly separate the UI presentation from the underlying data model itself. In this case, the sliders would need to change depending on the 'mode'. But... the slider widgets were not played with directly, but instead were attached to instances of GtkAdjustment. It turns out that GtkAdjustment is pretty much a 'model' class to represent ranging data in an abstract way. So... my next step was to look at what needed changing. I first was going to set things up to change the sliders manually when the mode was switched. However, as I moved forward I realized that things were almost clean, and only needed to get set. I just added a 'range limit' member to track which limit the range was using. Now the really good news was that the functionality I needed to hack on was already moved out to a pair of common functions (get1 and set255). And instead of needing to change those to take a parameter, I just needed to make the code respect the limit already a member of the 'model' class being used (GtkAdjustment). I no longer needed to keep a parameter, and so didn't need ot pass it in or have different functions to do different values. I did rename those two, just to make things a little clearer on their use. But that was just a minor tweak to make things easier to read down the road. I did a little find/grep magic to check where things were used and clean them up, but I was done fairly early. Building and testing took up more of the time. Here is a quick summary of the files I changed: src/widgets/sp-color-scales.h 1.8 src/widgets/sp-color-scales.cpp 1.13 src/widgets/sp-color-slider.cpp 1.10 src/widgets/sp-color-wheel-selector.cpp 1.9 sp-color-scales.h: * renamed get1() to getScaled() * renamed set255() to setScaled() * added _rangeLimit (this actually can go away now) sp-color-scales.cpp: * set default range limit * use rangelimit in constructing adjustments * changed get1() and set255() to meet the GtkAdjustment limit instead of hardcoded values * set the range limit when switching modes sp-color-slider.cpp: * only the get1/set255 function renaming sp-color-wheel-selector.cpp: * changed _adjustmentChanged to meet the GtkAdjustment limit instead of a hardcoded value. ======================= Summary: Things went very fast because of a few things: * The code was fairly clean and easy to understand to begin with. * Common functionality was pulled out and centralized into common functions instead of being repeated in-line. (fix it in one place, and it was fixed everywhere) * There was a nice separation of UI and data model. Functional logic dealt with the data model, while the UI was just a slave to it. (in this case there was the RGBA color value and the GtkAdjustment models in play) Those combined to make it quite easy to change the UI without negatively impacting the functionality of Inkscape itself. The more we can allow for this type of refactoring, the better Inkscape can be. So I'd like to encourage everyone to try to keep principles like this in mind. Oh, and a big thanks also goes out to all the developers who were in that code before me.

Effects Tarball

I created a few more effects today. A path randomizer that randomly nudges path nodes and control points within a specified radius. A path segment straightener that straightens bezier path segments in two different ways. And a random tree generator. The tree generator uses a really simple little Turtle class that draws with SVG path data instead of pixels. Very basic but I think it should be enough to make an Inkscape effect out of just about any of those fun little fractal routines done in LOGO. Available export formats

Hi, I'm in need of knowing the available export or interchange formats for Inkscape. I normally use Inkscape to create graphics for the web, but now I created a design for a publicity flyer and the printer (the guys who are going to print the flyers) only work with CorelDraw 10. How can I export the svg to a format Corel understands. I've been googling a bit and I know newer versions of Corel import svg directly (at least version 12) but I'm stuck on this one. screwy export

When I use export, it seems screwy with the DPI. I expect that if I change the DPI to 72, and then change the size of the exported image, the DPI should stay the same. It is really wacky and unlike other graphics apps for the DPI to change when I change the image size, and vice-versa. Actually, most apps, like gimp, etc have locks to constrain dpi and proportions (see attached screenshot). Anyhow, export use to work well for me to do exporting for web, but now is strange. Is this a problem for anyone else? Yes, I understand the logic that the size changes because there are then more pixels per inch, but I don't agree in how it acts. Once someone sets dpi in this, then the exported image should stay the same size and just have a higher DPI, but same size. Thoughts on this? Am I wrong here? Am I smoking something? Whats the deal?? Extensions Package

We've talked about before, and Aaron and I have recently talked about it, should we package extensions? I'd like put some ideas and questions forward so that people can rip them apart and we'll end up with something good :) The basic idea is that we may want to start shipping extensions packages somehow separately from the core Inkscape package. There are several reasons for this: -- Dependencies. The dependency checking in Inkscape will always be a toy when compared to dpkg and rpm. And, we don't want to require every package in Debian just to install Inkscape. -- Versioning. It might be more reasonable to have effects on a different release schedule if there were a larger collection of authors. Something more like OpenClipart's monthly release. -- Modularity. If we ever expect for people to be able to ship extensions for Inkscape from outside the project umbrella the tools to do so need to be good, and packing some of our own extensions externally would force use to make them reasonable. Reasons to just throw everything into the Inkscape tarball and live with it: -- Simple. Releases are a pain, more releases need to be justified. -- Complete Solution. Have you ever seen a public forum where someone posts a new program, and then 90% of the questions are "What theme did you use in the screenshots?" Multiple places to get extensions means that everyone won't have the same set. I think, that there is compelling reasons to start a new package for extensions, which brings the next points: how should it work? -- Granularity. Should each extension be it's own package? Should they be grouped by functionality (input/output/effect)? Should they be grouped by common dependencies (inkscape-extensions-{python,perl,pstoedit}) -- Versioning. I'm kinda thinking that we should just do <inkscape major>.<inkscape minor>.<extension release> That way extensions could be released independent of Inkscape, but still, you know what version of Inkscape they are tied to. Okay, I think that was verbose enough for now, if you made it this far I'm impressed. --Ted

Supporting <style> elements

Hi, all, Last night, user <giordano> came onto the channel and showed an SVG file exported from Visio, which did not render properly on Inkscape. Printing issues

I've found 2 major issues with printing (v .41): 1) getting it to print on my fedora system - lp or lpr won't work - the bigger problem is that users shouldn't even have to mess with lp or lpr 2) it won't print a zoomed image - just the original size 3) while we're at it - how about a way to save the zoomed image size to replace the actual size Gimp offers a much better print dialog box, addressing all of the above issues, can we capitalize on that ?

Also, it seems likely that Freehand will be either discontinued or at least downplayed so as to not hurt Illustrator, which means a lot of users will have to migrate. All this gives us a certain opportunity.

Command line extension options

Hi all, Long time no see! It'd be nice if you could pass in options to the EPS exporter on the command line. In other words, I'd like to be able to do inkscape -p '> file.eps' file.svg like I can now, but to be able to specify that I don't want text converted to path. What's the best way to go about this? I'm sure I could add a specific command line option, but it seems that perhaps there should be a more generic way of passing options to extensions. Any ideas? Cheers Carl

Win-Build with GTK-Wimp

Hey guys, today I'll be leaving for Lyon, where I will hold a course on design and public relations. I thought I'd be really cool to have Inkscape as a small giveaway, but frankly unlike gimp the win builds have the standard gtk-theme included, which doesn't really rule that much. What would be cool is to have it build with GTK-Wimp (and my icon theme) I'm not sure, how big of a job that is, but if it's easy to do, I'd really appreciate someone doing this within the next week, so that I can already distribute it. command line png export and hidden layers in .40?

That last release of SVGSlice was pretty poor, I'm afraid. Mixed up the versions of files I had, and since Inkscape is currently crashing on my ppc machine, I hadn't noticed. Anyway, I think it's all fixed, but in the process of testing for a new release, I've noticed that Inkscape 0.40 on my x86 box seems to export the hidden slice layer along with everything else. Is 0.41 the first version to support ignoring hidden layers on command line PNG export, or do I need to start bug hunting this one? Cleaned-up inkscape windows icon

Hi, all. I got weary of looking at that amateurish 32x32, 16 color icon that I made last year, which overlaps the boundaries and has a white (not transparent) background. I tried several times, and got a better-looking icon, inkscape32-16.ico. Crash with SVG file as argument

Hello, Whenever I try to launch Inkscape with an SVG file as argument it crashes and I get the message "emergency save activated" With any other type of file it doesn't crash. Does anyone notice the same behaviour? I'm running Inkscape CVS compiled with --with-gnome-vfs under SuSE Linux 9.2 if that makes any difference. Jef

Interesting to see that our linecount has been reduced a few thousand lines over the past month. Mental has been doing a bunch of code cleanup, so I would guess this has caused some linecount reduction. Several folks from the Open Clip Art Library have started a 'Planet' site for aggregating RSS feeds from developers in various graphics projects. http://openclipart.org/planet/ We're still in deep development mode. In addition to Mental's major cleanup work, Bulia has been continuously adding cool new features, Bryce is working on hooking up a Gtkmmified canvas, Jon Cruz is inventing new Panel and Palette metaphors, Cyreve is busily revising the text layout system, Peter has been fixing bugs and adding helper ffunctions, Jean Lemaire has made some improvements to the layer commands, Jon Philip has been helping with gtkmm on the Dialog Manager code, and probably more that wasn't listed in ChangeLog. There's been a rise in scripting interest lately, and I understand work is underway in writing an Inkscape manual. General-purpose projective transforms

Hi, I saw on the web a CS course paper by a Prof Chuck Stewart of RPI, about a simple mechanism for achieving projective transforms. http://www.cs.rpi.edu/~stewart/math_vision/lec9.pdf Basically you take 4 corners of a rectangle (like the corners of a selection marquee), a, b, c, d. Move one or more of the points to a', b', c', d'. Calculate the transform of the points (and the rectangle they describe) to the new points. Apply this to the selected object(s). Once this generalized projective transform is working, it can be specialized to its various subclasses, such as perspective, affine, shear, skew, etc. An easy way to achieve this, IMHO, would be to constrain their movement via the keyboard. Does this appear to be a valid new feature that we might want? Let the ratio be r = h/w. o Find the four corners in the image. Inkscape nightly builds now weak link against gtkspell

Hi, I've written a patch, enclosed below, which uses relaytool to make gtkspell weak linked. In English, that means Inkscape will use it if it's available at runtime, but otherwise won't. It's like using dlopen, except that fewer code changes are required and it's generally a lot more convenient. This exposed some issue that I am still trying to track down, of a crash deep inside aspell. I am not sure why this occurs, but I see the same problem with AbiWord. I am starting to wonder if this is another C++ ABI issue, because whilst the GCC documentation explicitly states that mixing two libstdc++ versions in the same image will work fine, in practice it apparently does not (or at least, I cannot see any other reason for the failure). If anybody starts seeing crashes inside aspell with the current nightly builds, please let me know and maybe we can track this down. I am having difficulties trying to build Inkscape using the procedures described on the Wiki Win32Port page. I believe I have followed Bob Jamison's directions to the letter. I hate to admit defeat, but I am in need of newbie help. I am using MinGW V3.1.0-1, ink32libs-050202.7z, and a fresh CVS update as of today, 4/10. Everything is installed in the default locations: C:/mingw, c:/gtk. That's exactly the type of thing needed. I downloaded the code and browsed through it. It looks like to create a dxf2svg converter one would need to do this: Create a sub-class of DL_CreationInterface called something like SvgCreator. SvgCreator's job would be to build up a tree of SVG elements from the DXF data as parsed by this library. To do this, in SvgCreator implement all of the virtual methods in DL_CreationInterface - addCircle(), addLine(), addKnot(), etc. Each of these routines would need to create the corresponding SVG element. I.e., in addCircle(DL_CircleData), you'd convert the contents of the DL_CircleData structure into SVG data and add it to your SVG tree. The next question is, how do you build the SVG tree? This is basically just a data structure to contain XML data, so you could probably use some existing XML library to do it. There is also some SVG-specific code out there you could look at reusing, such as Cairo, librsvg, or even Inkscape itself, in the src/xml directory. (Anyone have a suggestion for which lib would be best to use?) Finally, given the built-up tree, you need code to write it out to an SVG file. Presumably, whatever code you've selected for building the XML tree will include some sort of writer function, so in theory you can just call that, and you're done. :-) So to recap, this looks pretty straightforward. To code it you'll need to be moderately comfortable with C++. You'll need to create one class, and hook two libraries together. You'll need to create a makefile for it, and set up the usual packaging stuff too, but this is all pretty straightforward. I think this'd be a 2-weekend project for someone with good C++ skills, and perhaps thrice that (but an excellent learning project) for a C++ newbie. Anyway, wish I had time to do more than just give advice, but I hope this helps. This looks totally do-able, it just needs a bit of coding time. Gtkmmification status

Several people have taken interest in how the Gtkmm work is coming along, particularly in where they could help move it forward. The Gtkmm conversion is required for the 0.42 release, so it's got the high priority currently. We've got a ton of cool features besides gtkmm already in the can, so we have strong incentives to getting gtkmm done. We really don't want to bump the gtkmm work to next release; we've already bumped it for the past three releases, plus we have a bunch of other highly requested features (like the layer dialog) that are dependent on the gtkmm work being in place. Good progress has been made so far, but as you can imagine, reimplementing the Inkscape interface is not a trivial task! We've got most of the bones in place, but there's a lot of flesh to be hung. We had started from the point of Gtkmmifying dialogs. We've made good progress in this area, and have converted most of the simpler dialogs. There's a few challenges still left, such as figuring out how to do TreeView-based dialogs like the XML Editor and the much-anticipated Layer Dialog, however for the most part I think we've got a good framework in place so it'll just be the effort needed to do the conversions. There's still a lot of TODO's in the code for doing things like hooking up preferences, gaining some better abstractions, etc. Jon Philips has been plugging away at some of these items. Converting dialogs to Gtkmm is pretty straightforward. You choose the dialog you want to convert, create a new class derived from Inkscape::UI::Dialog, and go through the old dialog code, migrating function calls over. You look at the manual on gtkmm.org to learn what the C++ versions of the gtk calls are. Usually you can eliminate a lot of unnecessary code in the process (gtkmm is more concise, and the Dialog class takes care of a lot of the basics for you). Meanwhile, Jon Cruz has been experimenting with a cool new idea that abstracts the contents of dialogs into "Panels" that could either be presented in dialogs or embedded in the GUI frame itself. I think this adds flexibility that many users may find quite helpful; it should be possible for someone to adapt the Gtkmm dialog architecture to this without too much trouble. Jizzbug has done a bang-up job of Gtkmmifying all the toolbar and menu stuff. The Gtkmm interface now at least *looks* like the current interface. There's still some optimizations and tweaks needed - button sizes aren't quite right, for example, and we probably need to update the toolbars and menus with recent changes to the main codebase, but these are bite-sized tasks that seem very appropriate for new Gtkmm developers so I'm not worrying about them for now. There's still a lot of chunks of the UI that haven't even been started yet, such as the statusbar and rt-click context menu. They're of medium priority, so I'm not worried about them yet, but they'll definitely have to be tackled before we can make the new UI the default. The highest priority right now is getting the Canvas hooked up. This will be a major milestone to achieve since it'll finally let us *see* SVG documents inside the new interface. With that in place, the work of hooking up toolbars, menu items, dialogs, etc. can finally get under way in full earnest. It looks to me like the path to achieving this is to C++-ify SPView and SPSVGView more, then reimplement SPDesktop and SPDesktopWidget in Gtkmm. This is what I'm focusing on myself right now. Last night I created some C++ member function wrappers for the sp_view* routines, and intend to continue this work through the weekend. Converting SPDesktop will be a sizeable project, but I'm hopeful within a week or so I'll have it in working order, if not completely done. I'm really looking forward to having the Gtkmm work available for us to use in the main interface. Beyond just making the ui code a lot easier to work with, it's bringing in some rather cool innovations we will be able to take advantage of. It will eliminate a ton of quirks in the current UI. It will give users much more flexibility in how the UI is laid out. It will enable us to do some much more sophisticated UI designs, and give Inkscape the advanced UI capabilities that other leading edge GNOME applications have today. :-) As you can see, there's a lot of areas where work can be done in parallel. There's still a lot of blank-page type areas for pure creativity, other areas that mostly work now but need good problem solvers to perfect, and plenty of bulk-work places where C++/gtkmm novices can have a big impact while they learn. I would strongly urge anyone that has some time in the coming months, a little C++ skill, and an interest in pushing Inkscape forward, to think about joining in on the Gtkmm effort. Donation System Proposal

Hi all, The other day we received another donation to Inkscape ($10, less SourceForge and PayPal fees). :-) For about a year we've talked on and off about donations for Inkscape. The major question is not getting the money, but deciding how to apply the money appropriately. Of course, we've had no shortage of ideas... From bug bounties/contracts, to hardware, to developer support, to sponsoring attendance at conferences. I like all the ideas, although some would be more feasible than others. However, the one idea I think I like the best, to start with, is to fund contract work to enhance file import/export converters. I.e., accumulate enough funding to pay a developer to augment an existing xyz2svg tool for use with Inkscape. Here is my reasoning for this proposal: 1. These extensions are distinct from the main Inkscape codebase, thus eliminating a range of potential conflicts of interests, learning curve issues, and so forth. 2. Users *definitely* want to see the file converters improved. This is often a crucially important need for them, and they will see the benefits of the improvements immediately. 3. File converters haven't tended to attract attention from many developers. Maybe they're not considered 'sexy' enough? Using money as a motivator is worth a shot. 4. These converters will have definite value beyond Inkscape. A lot of programs out there are starting to gain SVG support. If we are able to gain good xyz2svg converters, this could benefit them as well, plus would help build the reputation of SVG as a good format for interoperability, which helps all of us out a lot. 5. I emphasize focus on enhancing _existing_ tools over creating new ones for several reasons. First, the work of creating a basic tool that does the first 80% of the conversion is usually not too hard and actually kind of fun; the hard part is getting that last 20%, and that's where I think funding development will be most effective. Also, it can be harder to track progress for development of a tool being written from scratch. 6. We can allow users to contribute to the specific converter they wish to support; i.e., we establish one pool for the AI extension, another for DXF, another for VSD, etc. and allow people to choose which one their donations will go to. Here are the challenges I see for this proposal, and how we'd be able to deal with them: a. Funds collection/distribution: If we get a large number of donations, there may be an administrative overhead to keep track of them. I'll set up an account that allows us to accumulate the funds via SourceForge, and for now I'll just handle the accounting manually. If it becomes burdensome, myself or someone can script it up better. b. Donation fees: Currently, SF and Paypal impose fees for donations. A $10 donation works out to be $8.48. It'd be nice to preserve a larger proportion, but beggers can't be choosers. If someone less lazy than me wants to set up something better, let me know. c. Deciding the contract terms. This is the point I'm not sure about, but clearly we need to have some way of establishing the minimum goals for the funding. I'm open to suggestions, but sure we can figure something out; contracting developers is nothing particularly new. d. Deciding who is allowed to bid on the work. I'm concerned about random people bidding on the work, and also think that the spirit of the donations is to also help further Inkscape development in general. Thus I would be tempted to limit participation to people who have a track record of doing development work for Inkscape. These people will be "known quantities", and will have a stake in doing a good job. e. Deciding when to close donations and open bidding. In other words, how do we decide how much money to raise? It's often difficult to determine how much time it'd take to implement a feature. My thought is to leave this open ended - we simply post what the expectations are and how much $$ has been collected, and when a developer feels enough has been raised, he submits a bid to do the work. This way, "the market" is left to decide what the rate should be. f. Deciding what file converter features to allow donating to. My feeling is that we should just leave this open to the donors. Any donation target that someone puts money against is worth adding to the list. g. Legal/contractual paperwork and such. I'm blissfully clueless here. Maybe this part is the achilles heel of the whole idea, or maybe it's no big deal, I have no idea. But people have paid other people to do work before, and I'm sure it can be sorted out somehow. Are there any plans for a DXF import ? Right now I have to open a DXF in Open Office Draw, save as SVG, then import into Inkscape. Too bad OO is not GPL otherwise could just take that code module and stick into Inkscape, but maybe there are others.

Are there any plans for a DXF import ? Right now I have to open a DXF in Open Office Draw, save as SVG, then import into Inkscape. Too bad OO is not GPL otherwise could just take that code module and stick into Inkscape, but maybe there are others.

Allowed INX param types

NEW: Load from URL

As a configure-time option, Inkscape now supports loading SVG's from a remote URL via HTTP. This is implemented using the GNOME VFS library. This is a library that Inkscape has not had a dependency on previously, so it's implemented as an optional dependency that is controlled during configuration via the --with-gnome-vfs flag. In other words: $ ./configure --with-gnome-vfs $ make $ src/inkscape http://openclipart.org/clipart//animals/bugs/butterfly_jonathan_dietr_01.svg The file is loaded into memory and parsed directly, rather than saving to a temporary file, so it loads pretty fast. Effect errors

I often write effects in Python that raise an exception, and therefore send no output to STDOUT. Inkscape responds with: Extension::Script: Unknown error for pclose : Success /tmp/ink_ext_qL04b1:1: parser error : Document is empty ^ /tmp/ink_ext_qL04b1:1: parser error : Start tag expected, '<' not found ^ ** (inkscape:6769): CRITICAL **: virtual void Inkscape::Extension::Implementation::Script::effect(Inkscape::Extension::Effect*, SPView*): assertion `mydoc != NULL' failed Is that just a healthy warning? I also notice on occasion (though I can not reproduce it on command yet) that I experience a crash soon afterward. So my question: Could stderr generated by scripts be captured into a gui window? This is of course unnecessary because, I can always run inkscape from the command line for debugging. But I thought the information might help users track down dependencies. Aaron Spike

Basepoint of objects

Hi Just wondering if theres any plans to implement the ability to change the basepoint of an object. I just submitted 1178771 for this. It'd be really nice to be able to change the position or rotation based on all of the corners and centre, and perhaps midpoints of the sides of an object. Please refer to Scribus' Properties Palette for an example if its interesting to Inkscape. Craig Scribus Team

Scripting

Sorry I don't know enough about the subject to formulate more proper questions. I'm interested in learning more about the python scripting support. I realize it is a ways down on the roadmap still, but occasionally I hear a bit about it. Is there anything in CVS that I can try or anything I can read to learn more and watch it develop? inx files

I have read through most of the inx files in the extensions directory and I have created a few myself. I would like to learn whatever else there is to know about inx files. Who should I ask? Where should I look (in which source files)? Today I am wondering specifically about the param elements as seen in grid.inx. When I see the param element I expect two things. That there will be a gui facility for a user to change those values. And that those values will be passed to my script. When I tried neither happened. I think I've heard some chatter about the gui not being finished. But I was surprised that the values weren't passed on the command line. Am I at least in the ballpark with how this will work? Craig, I have used the pdf printer route with Inkscape numerous times but have always been a bit disappointed. I tried again this evening using a recent cvs with a test file containing a rectangle (+radial gradient) +star (+linear gradient) + spiral +some text. While this is hardly of mind shattering complexity there was an awful lot of huffing and puffing. Saved as svg the file size was 6KB. Saved as pdf the file size was 959KB. then I changed the gradients to uniform grey. Saved as pdf the file size was still 575KB. Some observations. I am using the PrimoPDF driver as downloaded, and saving in Screen mode. Win2000 and PentiumIII933. The saving takes ages - as in a couple of minutes. However, once it gets there the pdf contains the colour and the gradients. I remember trying transparency as well some time ago and that was ok too. The line quality onscreen is pretty bad but improves with magnification up until the jaggies come in. The slow speed and large file sizes are definitely a concern. I have not looked at what a "realistic" file would be like in terms of time. But if a svg file of say 60KB produced a pdf file of 10MB then I would doubt its use! Having said that, I must admit there are lots of issues with PDFs and even a very fast program such as Xarax. There the gradients/transparencies/other special effects are often changed into bitmaps and produce huge files. Interestingly, exchanging gradients for say 20% grey in Xarax brings the file size back down to sensible figures. We do not seem to have quite got there yet. Xarax also does not seem to suffer the time problems that Inkscape does. However, we know there are time problems and have done for some time. Maybe at this stage we should be thankful that we can get pdfs in this way at all. There are also many PDF printer solutions out there. It would be good for someone to look at a few of them and find out which is the most efficient at this stage. Certainly pdf capability is a limiting factor in my use of Inkscape at present. the subject line is what is recieved after attempting to run inkscape 0.41 from the command line. using the gui interface, it quitely dies, no error messages. this is on gentoo. i've filed bug report #1176668, this happens with the CVS version and the emerge version. there where no other errors reported with or during the emerge. any other troubleshooting that i can do before dumping this version and going back to 0.37, which works fine ? thanks for the suggestions jerry __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New features in Illustrator

Just thought I'd throw the link on the list so you can all see what they're up to... http://www.adobe.com/products/illustrator/newfeatures.html Boy does that "Control Palette" look awfully familiar. ; ) (yeah, I know Xara had it first, but still... goes to show how they're playing catch-up in some areas) The Live Painting and Enhanced Stroke options look interesting... I question how much better their new "live tracing" is, compared to their old tracing engine (as it is supposedly much better). The rest of the "new features" don't look too interesting to me (other than the custom workspaces, which might be handy... but it's something only a fringe crowd would benefit from). Just figured I'd see what others opinions were. -Josh

Palette loading

I got palette loading in last night. It now looks in the /usr/local/share/inkscape/palettes and ~/.inkscape/palettes directories for any Gimp-style palette files and loads them all up. Of course... that was just loading. :-) I'll check in soon to add UI changes to allow switching the palette displayed in the swatches window.

undo crash

Mental, I had to revert document-undo.cpp to 1.21 because your version crashes on any attempt to undo with: ** ERROR **: file xml/simple-session.cpp: line 45 (virtual Inkscape::XML::Event* Inkscape::XML::SimpleSession::commitUndoable()): assertion failed: (_in_transaction) aborting... Sorry I didn't discover this yesterday, was too busy with other things. But please do be more careful with testing before committing.

remembering window size in config

Hello all! I indeed know that it's possible to store window geometry in the .svg files, but now I have this feature turned off. It comes out not really useful in sutuations like described below. What if I want Inkscape to always start maximised, but my friend whom I share my works with wants his Inkscape to start not maximised but with a given window size? All apps I know remember minimised/maximised status and geometry in their configs. Is it possible to be added to Inkscape too, or this is not something you consider needed? Thanks! Artemio.

- When several objects (or a group) are selected and the "snap points" mode is active, only the outermost points or nodes will snap, instead of all points in selection. [patch by Eric Jonas] - In the "snap points" mode, a text object will snap its baseline anchor (the left end of the baseline) to grid or guides. That anchor point is visualized as a little square mark when a text object is selected.

Rotation anchor point & Inset/Outset functionality

I'll probably be told to file and RFE, but... Is there by chance an option that I don't know of so that Inkscape can remember where you've moved the "anchor" or center of rotation for an object for future use? As far as I know, currently when you move that little + ("anchor") to some other position, when you switch to move mode and then back to rotation mode, the "anchor" is centered on the object again. It would be helpful for going back to edit objects between sessions of work (and even within the same one), if it could remember where you last had it. One thing that would be helpful either way though is for you to be able to do our new favorite "ctrl+click" on the anchor to get it back to the center of the object again. (yes I know it's easy and I can switch selector modes and go back and it's back in the center, but not switching tools is even easier than that) And this ties into a thought I had about Inset/Outset... would it be possible to have those functions "weighted"? Basically by using that "anchor" like for rotation, it could possibly pull the inset offset in a different direction other than purely centered. I guess the equivalent for how it would function would almost be like on radial gradients how you can pull the center to some other location and it "weights" the coloring. I know that the inset/outset stuff currently is a fixed amount so it will probably not work, but it was just a thought. I'm sure that once we also have the object transform (from one shape to another) that will probably handle what I'm looking for too though. -Josh

NEW: baseline align & distribute

Improvements in Align & Distribute dialog: o The new Unclump button works the same as in the Tile Clones dialog, except that it unclumps the selected objects instead of the tiled clones of the selected object. o Four new buttons let you align or distribute horizontally or vertically the baseline anchors of the selected text objects (non-texts are unaffected by these buttons). A text object's baseline anchor is the left end of its first character's baseline, visualized as a small square mark when the text is selected. Now you can easily align or distribute lines of text in different fonts or sizes, regardless of whether they have letters with extenders (such as 'y' or 'j') or not. o All the icons in the dialog are redrawn in a consistent style. Buttons are rearranged for clarity. Tooltips are made shorter and easier to understand. Also, Simarilius is planning to move his "Grid arrange" dialog as a second tab to the Align & Distribute dialog.
