keeping track of our work on the book

Howdy, http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/User_Manual_Status_EN is created to help us keep track of what's happening during book sprint. Feel free to take care of the rest of the table :) The plan for me for today/tomorrow is to finish lists of changes across versions for other tools and then to go reworking and merging that text into the manual. The Inkscape Booksprint is over!! We've worked hard (especially the last couple of days) to get a usable manual, and we believe that we've accomplished that. You can see it online at discuss@...25... Of course, you'll see that the current table of contents has a large number of incomplete chapters. Our goal was to get the most basic chapters finished and usable, so all the Introduction and Tools chapters are fairly complete and in good form. Some are actually excellent. There are other chapters as well which are finished, such as chapters on text, styling objects, etc. You will see that there is some inconsistency in writing and visual style also. This booksprint was a great opportunity to work some of these problems out, so content written earlier and quickly does not strictly follow guidelines that we established, but these things will be worked out as we continue adding content. The exciting thing is that now we have a functional manual repository that will aid in keeping various languages' manuals in sync and that is really very simple to use, so that anyone can help to add new content and keep existing content updated! The French manual is currently lagging (translations will be following, this time, in an amazing reversal, from English to French) and current French content will continue being updated and converted to English as we go. Again, if anyone is interested in helping, please contact the manual maintainers on the inkscape-docs(a)lists.sourceforge.net mailing list to find out what needs most to be done. (Some of us will be sort of taking a break for a while, though, since we're tired from lots of hard work :) Thanks to all who helped support and will continue to support the manual effort!! Thanks especially go to Adam Hyde and FLOSS Manuals for making the booksprint a possibility and a reality. Hello all, I think it's time to speak about our futur work to made on booksprint. It's better arrived and know a little about what exactly we will do. We know, it's for write an english manual of user for Inkscape. If we can write a french manual, too, it's an side effect positiv, but it's not more my goal. After, i can translate it. Fist of all, i thought we have already a TOC. But with my little experience of author, i think this TOC, (very good also) isn't perfect. Floss Manual advice : * only use one Heading One (h1) for the chapter, at the top of the page (and other : * bold technical terms when first used * explain every step, and include clear screen shots for every step * explain all jargon 'inline' * make no references to chapters before or after ) Google need : 40 chapters One H1 for chapter => other organisation of the TOC. Actually our official TOC have Part, H1, H2, H3.... Furthemore i have see, with the same content, the organization change for each goal. What it make for me a little confusion is : The main goal is write a paper book or an online manual ? For me the way to write change a little... Less details on online manual. Short strings and not attention to construct a linear read. Clic in internet is the king. Etc. Print manual : organization of the chapter one after one ; why not creat quick box (like "Be carful", or "HotKeys most used" etc ; I don't know why, but paper editor love them. Maye it was for a good things. Etc. Paper book or online manual, we can organize the same TOC, the same of the kind of organization about our chapter. Here my proposal of a TOC. Be careful it was not "in order" (french expression). Brianna, Great to finally meet you! I think we need to make sure at least one license is GPL in keeping with the software itself. I don't think there's any problem with dual licensing - at least personally - or even triple, if need be. What does FLOSS Manuals require/recommend, Adam? Although I'm not entirely familliar with GFDL (I'll read up on it), it should be fine. More later. JF PS - I'm sending this to the list too, since I think it's an important discussion to have there. It would be most excellent to have your help! I don't know if there are any interested Spanish manual translators ATM. Basically, once we have some finalized text to work with, you'd be free to translate them. We have yet to begin the actual work, but we will probably do some preliminary writing before the booksprint. I wonder if Adam (who is on this list) might give a brief description, if he has a moment, of how the current translation site works, and what we might see in the near future for translation tools? I have yet to look at them in depth and would not want to give an explanation that is incorrect or, at best, lacking important info. Anyway, best thing for now is to monitor the list and participate in the discussions. If you're interested in coming in person, we'd love to have you! A short time ago, those of us who had been actively discussing the manual on the inkscape-docs list agreed that FLOSS Manuals (http://flossmanuals.net <http://flossmanuals.net/>) was our best option for keeping an official manual up-to-date while encouraging non-technical users to contribute. It has a simple interface, is readily available (it is a web application), and there exist translation tools which are being actively developed to provide a usable translation interface. There are many other benefits to using FLOSS Manuals (FM) as well: we would have the ability to organize different setups of manuals / how-tos by arranging existing content into new “manuals”; to generate manuals in different distributable formats (export as pdf, html, and even print online with lulu.com, et cetera). These powerful capabilities create an exciting possibility to build and maintain a dynamic manual with minimal effort. Recently, FM has received a small grant from Google to host a “book sprint”.
