Inkscape 0.92pre3 released

The 0.92pre3 source package has been released and can be downloaded from: https://inkscape.org/en/download/source/ This pre-release adds GUI support for a preview of a potential last minute new feature we are considering inclusion in 0.92, mesh gradients. It is our hope that raising visibility of this awesome feature will help motivate its inclusion in the SVG 2.0 specification, which is approaching finalization. Please try the feature out, and if you like it please advocate for its adoption by web browsers and other SVG using applications. Whether we actually include it in 0.92 depends on hearing plenty of positive feedback. We'll also be paying attention to reports of problems. Packagers are encouraged to prepare binary packages for the platforms we support. Thanks, Bryce

Freenode cloaks available

Hi everyone, For those of you that use freenode IRC, and who would like to show affiliation to the inkscape project on IRC, there is a possibility to have account cloaks. Basically, what changes is that when you join a chan, the message would be "Mc [~mc@...1522.../developer/mc] has joined" instead of "Mc [~mc@...3446...]" with no cloak or "Mc [~mc@...3447.../mc-]" previously. It will also appear in the /whois information, etc. The format would probably be @inkscape/developer/<preferred name> for devs, but we can also give @inkscape/translator/<preferred name> for translators, /board/ for board members, etc. If anyone is interested, just drop me a line on #inkscape or #inkscape-devel . I'll fine-tooth-comb the various workflows this weekend and make a comparison for reference. Personally, I'd be thrilled if paste-style worked on flowed text again. Jabier's idea sounds good to me though at a glance. Hi all. Today I need to draw something with text and I want to sugest improvements to 0.92 if posibol. 1.- Remove set default text format definition whith only click. Is hard to use well, give usualy bad results and most important text default styling is changed magicaly to the final user. I know it and be brong on tenxt editing several times in the same doc. 2.- Line height changes not work correctly if there is selected text, is hard to change baseline once the text is entered, finaly I become coping the text and pasting into a new text item 3.- If you change the size of a text, baseline is not updated and also become to "bug" 2 Sorry for my english, Jabier.

Ubuntu 14.04 lts cmake build blows up

This may be related to my other thread about "bzr update", where it complained about Conflict: can't delete src/libgdl because it is not empty. Not deleting. bzr update "can't delete" warnings?

Hi all, What should one do about this situation? bzr update <many messages omitted> Conflict: can't delete m4 because it is not empty. Not deleting. Building 0.92 with cmake following instructions in README fails on LM18

Hi everyone, I've been trying to build 0.92 (first the pre2 package from the website, now the version directly from the repo (~inkscape.dev-inkscape-0.92.x-r15145.tgz). I've followed the instructions for cmake in the README file ( mkdir build cd build cmake .. make make install) and the result was (translated from German): [ 79%] Building CXX object src/CMakeFiles/inkscape_base.dir/version.cpp.o make[2]: *** no rule to create target „src/inkscape-version.cpp“, needed by „src/CMakeFiles/inkscape_base.dir/inkscape-version.cpp.o“. End. CMakeFiles/Makefile2:597: the rule for target „src/CMakeFiles/inkscape_base.dir/all“ failed make[1]: *** [src/CMakeFiles/inkscape_base.dir/all] Fehler 2 Makefile:127: the rule for target „all“ failed make: *** [all] Error 2 Same result both on an upgraded Linux Mint and on a fresh LM18 install in a VM. Are the instructions misleading, is something missing/broken on my system, or is something wrong with the 'settings' for cmake? Or something else? It works with the autotools option, but (at least for 0.92pre), the compiled version contains a lot of stuff (LPEs, mesh - think that was removed recently) that I thought wouldn't be in 0.92 yet. (I'm on Linux Mint 18, Ubuntu 16.04 base) Can anyone help? Regards, Maren

Hi all. I have a proposal for the SVG group about patterns. In a pattern definition if you extend the with and height, the result is a gap between objects in pattern. if you reduce the width/height in less ammount than the original item/s bounding box, the result is croped and not too much useful in my point of view. My proposal is the patern mix with colindants to alow make seamless pattterns easy, without any extension, clones and extra staff. And if the order is based on each item in the pattern, not based in the full pattern, this make coolest effects without colisions. I home this seems useful. Cheers, Jabier.

Hi devs, I've just been playing with 0.92pre2, and found 8 (!) new LPEs that aren't mentioned in the Release notes (some of which I don't have a clue as to what they do). It's cool that there appears to be so much more to discover :) Will they all make it into into the stable version? Could someone add a rough description into the release notes for those that will be in 0.92? If there isn't time for fleshing it out, I'd offer to add screenshots and work on the text a bit (when I understand what they all do). Bug in dxf-import.py line 443

Hey guys, there seems to be a bug in dxf-import.py in line 443: w = 90.0/25.4*vals[groups['370']][0]/00.0 This always crashed with a division by 0. A quick look reveals, this has to crash. I found a bugfix online which makes this line: w = 90.0/25.4*vals[groups['370']][0]/100.0 That helps and provides the desired results. The question is if this is the desired value or if the developer intended a different number? Cheers, Timo

"Convert CSS attributes to XML attributes" breaks rendering in external applications

Hi, I have tried to submit a bug report via launchpad multiple times during the day but it seems to not like me today, thus I am submitting it via the ML. When I save an optimized .svg with the option "Convert CSS attributes to XML attributes" enabled with Inkscape 0.91 (Ubuntu 16.04), any application that I have tested but Inkscape do not display some parts of an image with the resulting file. I managed to create a MWE that should be handy enough for a successful analysis. Attached you can find the original Inkscape .svg and two optimized .svg files created with the CSS option turned on and off respectively. When the option is off then all applications render the dot fine, when it is on only Inkscape recognizes it. KR -- Dipl.-Ing. Change in behaviour: Import image auto-groups the image

In trunk, all images dragged into the canvas are automatically put in a group. Is there a reason for this change? It's been a bit of a pain over the last few weeks, because: 1. It requires ungrouping the image, or clicking into the image group to view image properties 2. It requires the same to trace bitmap. Any ideas as to why this change was made? Thanks. :) -C

Supporting Inkscape: What are the best ways?

Hey folks. So I've recently branched out into several FLOSS communities, and so I'm exposed to a lot more wishlist items. Generelly they are things on the roadmap, and many have to do with the SVG spec. When someone expresses a need for *x-feature* I generally send them to this page to help: https://inkscape.org/en/support-us/svg-standards-work/ I was wondering if this is the best thing to do. I get a lot of requests to help the project from people who I help get to grips with Inkscape and other FLOSS. Can someone provide a list of current links to parts of the project that need financial aide? I can sort out who to send where (based on the features they are interested in). 0.92: Middle mouse button not panning?

I just noticed in 0.92-pre2, at least on Windows, the mouse middle button does not pan anymore. On 0.91 installation, same machine, middle mouse button pans. [ If enabling "scrolling" by space key (checkbox "Mouse move pans when Space is pressed"), that kind of panning works, however you need to have the canvas "focused" for this to work (you get this gratis with middle mouse button), so it's really inconvenient in comparison. ] Can anyone confirm with Linux build, or on another Windows machine? This feels more likely to be me having some corruption in my installations, than an actual regression, so I hesitate to report it just yet. Cheers,

Here's an update on where we are in getting the release out. 1. Windows packaging seems to be shaping up well. Packages for 0.91pre1 are posted to the website. Hopefully we'll see 0.92pre2 packages soon. OSX still appears in need of volunteers to get packaging sorted. It looks like we may be forced to omit this from our release announcement plans, but let's give it a few more days. If anyone is working on or plans to work on OSX packages, please contact me ASAP. 2. DPI Scaling bug #1389723 - We still need someone to work on this bug; there have not been new comments. *** We still need someone to adopt this issue and run it to ground. 3. Disable unstable features, bug #1589340 - I pushed the MESH option fix. suv's summarized the remaining bits needing done and this looks straightforward to get finished. 4. Fonts not shown in font manager (Win32), bug #1416674 - This is now dropped as a release blocker. It still needs added to the release notes. 5. About screen - Work is under way here; hopefully this can get taken care of quickly. 6. Release Notes - Apart from perhaps adding a few more known issues, we are probably at a point we can consider the Notes complete. I agree with everything Bryce said. Most of that was merely time constraints. There's a lot I would change tbh, mostly tweaking and timing of things. It was a challenge to get everything in there, and a lot of the issue had to do with syncing the action with the music properly. It was a great learning experience, and the things suggested will certainly be fixed on the next version. The way it showcased the features in real time was pretty stunning. The one that stuck with me the most was the on-canvas gradient editing, I suppose because it involved shiny color. The font measurement stuff was amazing too, maybe because I'm a sucker for dimensions. :-) The new guide features went by a bit too quickly to grok what the change was. The setup part for node tool dropdown was a bit slow, but when it got to the actual feature it jumped too quickly so it's hard to see what the actual feature was. The symbol dialog, find with mouse wheel, and paint order examples felt spot on. Live path effects as well, however I know there's been a *ton* of cool work here and wonder if this section could be expanded. Drag and drop layer ordering looked pretty slick but I didn't follow what exactly was going on. For the new file format support, I wonder if it would be permissible to include the logos of the respective products? Differentiating between the import and exports might be worthwhile. Some of those, like visio import, I thought we had for a while? Hello Maren, Hello Martin, Eduard uploaded some packages to the gallery. He now stuck in the proccess copying to the 0.92pre2 gallery. The gallery is visible in the "copy to" for "Developers" where he is "Uploader". Pls. adjust Eduards group membership or gallery ownership accordingly. Maren, Saying that I prefers you refer to the gallery item, so that people can access packages as they are uploaded. similar to https://inkscape.org/en/*developer/galleries/092pre1/ So you avoid having cross server links or dead links. I have a work to our UI group, It's about the feature described in this video [1] - rotate workspace There is a recent discussion higly recomend to read [2]: We need to define the way to handle workspace rotation: There is no realtime rotation, so we need to select an angle and start redraw, so the option to a tool to it become a bad idea, except we have a pixel preview of current workspace to "phantom" the rotation as Martin point, but not sure about it The rotation is done by the current workspace center, no problem where the document are on it. We need to define: * WIDGETS * Shortcuts 1: Shortcuts. only one direction, a modiffier [XXX] rotate by prefs rotate steps with [XXX] modifier rotate in 45 or 90 degree from 0 could be a option 2:Widget. Two options: Popup from button or toolbar, there is some discussion about in [2] I want it defined to know the way to take, both have things good and bad. 0.92 release status (volunteers needed)

A number of different things need to be done to get the release out the door, but presently these are the top priorities: 1. Packaging for Windows and OSX - Has anyone taken a shot at doing Windows or OSX packaging for the snapshot releases? I'm worried when we get to the point of doing the release announcement, we may not have packages supporting all platforms. I would be ok if we end up having the initial release be Linux-only but I know most people would be disappointed if we don't have simultaneous platform support. *** We need volunteers to work on/coordinate packaging for each of these platforms. If no volunteers are available then we'll drop that platform from the release announcement plans. 2. DPI Scaling bug #1389723 - This appears to be the last serious regression that really *has* to be fixed for the release. Good news is that there is already a proposed fix and a plan in place for resolving it. There is no named assignee, although several people have been working on it. But right now it needs more eyes to review and test it, with a particular look at usability and how the fix will be accepted by affected users. *** We need a core developer to take a coordinational role for this bug and help shepherd the proposed patches to a resolution. No particular experience with the problem is needed, just available time to test, track remaining issues, and chase down people to address them. 3. Disable unstable features, bug #1589340 - I've landed most of the proposed changes, but there is one more to do (comment #11, essentially re-introduce the fix for bug #619903). *** We need someone to apply the fix for bug #619903 to the 0.92 branch. If no volunteers are available, then I'll take care of it when I get some time. 4. Fonts not shown in font manager (Win32), bug #1416674 - This is platform-specific on Windows but appears to be relatively bad for folks. Its not a 0.92 regression but was a regression on 0.91. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a clear path to a fix, and we do not have an assignee for the bug. *** We need someone to record this bug as a Known Issue in the release notes. *** We need a skilled developer to investigate the bug, identify a solution, and volunteer to be the assignee for the bug. If no volunteers are available, I'll drop this as a release blocker. 5. About screen - Josh and Martin were coordinating work on a contest here, but I don't think it got kicked off. I understand Josh has been quite tied up with other issues, so perhaps someone could volunteer to assist with the grunt work of getting this off the ground? I think there's still going to be adequate time to do a contest if it gets going soonish but I don't want to delay the release on it; worst case we can just rev the number on 0.91's about screen. *** We need someone to volunteer to assist here, or possibly to take over the task of organizing the contest. *** We need someone to meanwhile rev the current about screen number to 0.92, in case the contest can't be done. 6. The Release Notes look pretty good, but as we near to the release we need to finish reviewing and copyediting, and make sure all new features are adequately described: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Release_notes/0.92 7. New snapshot release - I've been procrastinating on this since I'm not sure anyone's actually packaging them, but I'll try and get another one out soon. Thanks for your answers! Inkscape 0.92pre2 (beta) released

A new 0.92pre2 source package has been released and can be downloaded from: https://inkscape.org/en/download/source/ I'm calling this the Inkscape 0.92 'beta'. All scheduled features are complete at this point, and bug fixing work is mostly finished (except for a few remaining known issues we're tracking). Packagers are encouraged to prepare binary packages for the platforms we support. Testers are encouraged to install and use this as if it were the release. At this point we're primarily looking for a) packaging errors, b) installation and build breakages, and c) regressions from recent bug fixes. If you find particularly severe/critical issues, feel free to contact me about them. Ordinary bugs should be entered into the release notes as Known Issues, and worked on in trunk for 0.93 or 0.92.1. Users are welcome to use this as well, just make sure to plan on upgrading to the actual release when it arrives; there are still a few more odds and ends we intend to add to the release. I'll follow up later with an update on our release status and some follow-up tasks. Thanks, Bryce

Hi there, I lost enthusiasm. I got the pt_BR translation file already in 50% and could raise it to 62% but it cost me 2 or 3 full days. In this journey, being alone, is more or less a burden.. I wish I could team up with Duarte who is a disciplined and diligent translator... but for pt_PT and not pt_BR. hehe. It's tough. Are there some guidelines or do we simply include all of them, even if they're mostly outdated? How was this handled in the past? Since languages seem to be hardcoded in "src/inkscape-preferences.cpp" we probably can not just drop those languages during packaging. Otherwise the language would still be offered as a choice, even if it's not present (which is is also an issue if the user decides not to install translations during installation). FYI current language statistics are attached (I hope it get's through), otherwise a copy is available from [1]. Diff support between revisions of an svg with hieghlighing support.

I think it would be nice to have a diffing tool inside of Inkscape. The idea is that we find areas that have change between two versions and it would visually hande a box around the idea showing what had changed. Ideally as a lay that can be turned on and off. I know my work would be better if there was a way to show what changed between versions without needing to look at the svg code itself. Do you think this kind of thing could work? BR, Jason Brower

Hi Friends, I've recently been contacted by a long time Inkscape user and former active moderator on InkscapeForum.com. (Technically she still is a moderator, but not active for some years.) And I think she also used to help with bug management and testing. And many of you may recognize her as the co-author of PacktPublishing's "Inkscape 0.48 Illustrator's Cookbook". Mihaela, aka prkos, is ready to become reinvested in the project, after having drifted away to work on other things for awhile. She has some good ideas for outreach and bringing in more diversity, and I think some ideas related to marketing, which she will have to explain, because I don't understand that kind of thing. I don't know if she wants to help with bug management again, as before, but maybe after she catches up to the version 0.92 era. And she said she wouldn't be opposed to working on a sequel to the Packt project. Ooohh! Mihaela, I forgot to mention this privately. Recently within the project, there has been some drive to create an open manual, which would be editable by the community. And we also want to make it more of a step by step manual, and more focussed to beginners. And this is as opposed to our current manual, which is copyrighted (can only be edited by the author), presently out of date, and a little more theoretical, and helpful for advanced users. It's a great manual, which has served the project well. But there have been a lot of complaints from beginners about a lack of documentation at their level. So we don't want to get rid of Tav's manual, but just have another manual available. The current state of those discussions is to use a project which was started by a French team (aaii, why can't I remember to save that link?!). It's another FLOSS manual. We're waiting for it to be translated to English. And once it is, we hope to be able to use it as a base to build the new open manual from. Maybe you might like to help with that? Also, some of her ideas will help us with the forum project too! And I'll be letting the committee know about that privately. So, welcome back Mihaela! Complaints concerning github issue removal

Hi I noticed last week that issues on github were disabled. There are now 2 complaints in a pull request concerning this. https://github.com/inkscape/inkscape/pull/20#issuecomment-251752290 Anyone able to answer them with some explanation? I assume code will eventually move to git/github/gitlab but we are not there yet...but I'm not sure what to answer "waldyrious" and "shakaran" on Github at the moment. 0.92 release, windows packaging, .msi vs .exe

Hello All, I put in the gallery the current screenshots of the .msi installer. https://inkscape.org/en/~theAdib/galleries/win32-installer-screenshots/ I would recommend not to publish the .exe installer for the 0.92 release. reason: The .exe installer is based on NSIS scripts whereas the .msi installer is based on native MS installer toolset. They do not harmonize together, that means a .msi does not detect existing .exe installed Inkscape and vice versa. There will be definatelly problems when both systems are installed "in parallel". The .msi installer has advantages in deeper system integartion (distributable in MS domains) and save removal but currently lacks translation. I do not have download numbers of .msi vs .exe but I think we should prefer the .msi as nr 1. Could we come here to a consens not to publish .exe installer? Best regards, Adib. --

The reason why it's such a big "might" is because it would take some time for this fund to reach the point where it could cover the fees (and we hope to get the forum online much sooner than that would take). I've offered, and I'm sure a lot of people in the community might volunteer to pay or help to pay the fees. But that puts us in a similar situation which we're trying to remedy with this effort (i.e. a single owner potentially disappearing). I would consider this to be a last resort. Has anyone heard of any webhost that might meet our needs; or maybe some kind of program which would pay the hosting fees? Compiling sax parser on Windows

Hi there, I finished sax parser project and I need to test it on Windows. Unfortunately I can't compile it. Is anybody here, who builds Inkscape on Windows and could check my changes, especially loading different file types? To detect file type I use a mime type of file from Gio library. I want to know if the content type is the same as on linux. Precisely: "image/svg+xml", "application/xml" or "text/html" for uncompressed svg, xml and html files and "image/svg+xml-compressed", "application/x-gzip" for svgz. Compiling, running and opening different files is sufficient to know that everything is ok. If there are no warnings of course. Hi. I'm using Inkscape to author a comic and the slow speed for certain things is very annoying. I'm already have OpenMP turned on and using 4 cores. 1. *large blurs are slow* - I'm an expert with writing SIMD code, so I was thinking about vectorizing the Gaussian IIR filter with SIMD intrinsics, even though it's harder than for a FIR. But I noticed there isn't any SIMD code in Inkscape so does that mean it's something to avoid. My first instinct was to optimize those 2 functions, but then I thought why are those even being called every time I scroll through the image? Why not convert the images up front to linear and stay that way in memory? If that can't be done, then my optimization approach is: 1. replace ink_cairo_surface_srgb_to_linear() with a simple 3rd degree polynomial approximation (0.902590573087882 - 0.010238759806148x + 0.002825455367280x^2 + 0.000004414767235x^3) and vectorize with SSE intrinsics. The approximation was calculated by minimizing the square error (maxError = 0.313) over the range [10, 255]. For x < 10, it uses simple scaling. 2. replace ink_surface_linear_to_srgb() with a vectorized implementation of pow(). Unlike srgb_to_linear(), a low degree polynomial can't be used due to the curve having larger high order derivatives. An alternative would be piece wise, low order polynomials. The main question I have is what degree of accuracy is desired? Certainly, it doesn't need double precision pow() since the input is only 8 bits! Is +- 0.5 from the true value (before quantization) OK or do people depend on getting pixel perfect results? UJ

So it's still possible to guard all code behind a WITH_XVERBS if we cannot add that lib as a hard dependency, but in the current state of things yaml would become a hard dependency of inkscape. Hi, all! Im a game developer and using the inkscape for layouting my game screens. Loading_screen_layout.svg one of them. It have g with id pause_button and rect with id sandclock_bound which I use for animation placement. The verbs feature which inkscape already have is have some limitations. The MAX_PATH for example. Also some verbs required user interactions, so I need some eXtended verbs here. Using python script I have load layout as xml and collecting element-id's of interactive elements with "onclick" attribute, for example. Using this element-id list I generate .yaml, which is some sort of batch file. Here is the .yaml file which is used with Inkscape to clean up layout and put button image in separated file with pause_button.svg filename. I've worked mainly with C# and Visual Basic in the past but am looking forward to working with C++ and learning more about it. Here's a crashing .svg file

I'm just gonna leave a crashing .svg file here for developers to look at since it been crashing upon opening, and I was using mirror, rotate copies extension. It crashed when I attempted to scale the entire watch, and then I couldn't open earlier version of the watch. Oh, and I think that arrange tool might need a "center of page" instead of having to type in axis for the rotate part. That would make this watch a lot easier. Other than that, I'm really liking where Inkscape is getting at. I must say that I am using it alongside with Illustrator to get the best of both world.

CMake now working on Windows

Hello everybody, I submitted a merge request of my Inkscape branch yesterday. Thanks to Marc it has already found its way into trunk - big thank you for the quick review. The branch I submitted now has full support for compiling Inkscape on Windows with 32-Bit and 64-Bit environments. It also supports out of source builds and should also work with Unix llike command lines such as Cygwin and MSYS. After weeks of investigation I managed to get locales to work and have an executable icon along with all application icons. Actually, the only thing that it distinguishes from a btool build now is that it does not (yet) produce the inkscape.com console binary. However, that should not be a big deal. In all other regards it should be ready for testing and packaging. I already updated the Wiki page with the new compilation instructions. Hi Inkscapers, For September's board meeting, I'd like to plan on getting together this Friday, September 2nd, at the usual time, noon Pacific, in #inkscape-devel. http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Board_Meetings Last meeting we discussed hackfest locations. My wife's been helping me scope out some awesome places in the area, and we have a good option to present. We'd also talked about sending a few folks to a GNOME event this fall; this meeting will be the last opportunity to get that underway if we want to do it. Another important agenda item is to follow up on the Inkscape Forum transition, and discuss follow up tasks. I've also started working on setting up an Inkscape account on Spreadshirt and put some Q's in to SFC regarding bank info and taxes, but am hoping that will be ready for usage soonish. So I'd like to chat with Mc and anyone else that would like to participate in getting that off the ground. Bryce

Doc scaling compatibility issue (Bug 1389723)

What do you think we should do about the release-critical DPI bug? We need a decision on a course of action. One of the changes we're bringing in this release is changing the definition of px from 90 dpi to 96 dpi, but a consequence of this is that documents created in 0.91 or earlier will become mis-scaled if used in 0.92. This is tracked in the following bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1389723 This is a release-critical bug, the sort that is likely to become a thorn in our side in the near to mid term as users start running into it more and more. Longer term it will diminish as our users move to newer versions, but I imagine it'll take multiple years before it goes away completely. I don't think we should consider reverting the change; it was introduced pretty early on this development cycle so backing it out could cause secondary bugs to crop up. Also, it's a change that has to be done, so if we don't do it this release we'll have to go through all the trouble again next release anyway. One proposed approach is to detect the affected files on load and display a warning with a recommendation to convert the file manually. Javier has posted a conversion tool that could be made use of; it's received a fair bit of testing but there may be some remaining corner cases to sort out; on the plus side with it being a discrete utility fixes could be rolled out for it without needing full Inkscape releases. The other proposed approach would be for Inkscape to internally convert files, so that no warning is needed. In theory this would provide a better user experience, but is going to require a lot more developer effort and thorough testing. I'm doubtful that all of this can be done adequately within the timeframe we're looking at for the release. Both approaches also require a mechanism to detect affected files, which sounds like it may be the tricky part here, as our SVG documents haven't had versioning information we could rely on for this case. Do you have thoughts on other ways to address this issue? Do you have a strong opinion on whether for this release we should use the expedient approach or else postpone the release until the more user-friendly approach can be developed? Or should we reconsider a revert of the DPI switch so we can get the release out and re-enable it post-release in hopes the issues can be worked out? Bryce

Hi Developers, I've just been looking over GitLab, since they've put together a new issues board feature and it's in the open source version of their code, could we have a look and see if it's suitable for our needs? We'd need to check the CI build system is what we need My reasoning is that I have great misgivings about github, proprietary, large almost monopoly, project authority issues. If we can avoid having our code go there, I really think we should try hard not to go that route unless all other avenues are exhausted. Best Regards, Martin Owens

Hi All, Is there still any sense in keeping our support for SVG JAR files? As I understand it, this is an obsolete StarOffice file archive format that has since been removed from LibreOffice/OpenOffice. In fact, as far as I can tell Inkscape itself does not support these archives... only Inkview does. We no longer even provide an explicit option in our build system to support InkJar. Is it OK for me to go ahead and remove support, or does anyone know of a reason we still need this? Best wishes, Alex

Rendering regressions in 0.92

--query-all command line option

Hello, i am new to the source code, although I have worked with C++ before. I am trying to understand why --query-all does not return all objects that show a visible box when the SVG document is viewed using Inkscape. Specifically, a flowRoot will have a box for it when that element is clicked on in the XML editor, showing an x,y,w,h but it does not appear in the output from a --query-all. thank you for your time and patience, Jordan -- Jordan Henderson

C++11 Best Practices

Hi all, Now that we can use C++11 in trunk (yeah!), what are the best practices? Are there parts of C++11 we still want to avoid? I started to think about this as I noticed in the code some places with perhaps over aggressive use of 'auto'. It seems to me that 'auto' should be reserved to places where it replaces a long, already unreadable iterator type. But it should not be used to replace simple types as this reduces the readability of the code, especially to someone not familiar with the code. For example, I don't see any benefit of replacing: GtkWidget* mywidget = someFunction(); by auto* mywidget = someFunction() Tav

Dear Inkscape Developers, I would be careful with the this!=NULL statement for bool SPLPEItem::performPathEffect as far as I can tell, this is not a virtual function, and there is no reason why the this pointer of a non virtual function should not be NULL. One can call a non virtual member function on a NULL pointer. Not very nice, but some people put such checks into the code as extra safety check on purpose and some even use tricks like calling a function on NULL pointers on purpose, e.g. for saving a lot of checks when the function is called. Hi, There are a number of issues with the Text and Font (Ctrl+Shift+T) panel, including: * Loading. Loading all system fonts can, in some cases, significantly reduce application launch time. * Memory. Loading fonts eats through memory. * Performance. It can be sluggish to scroll through hundreds of fonts. * Panel width. Long font names can cause the Text and Font panel (when docked) to take up half of the drawing area. See attached (http://i.imgur.com/Jx9Suy2.png). 1. Remove the word "font" (the tab menu gives context). 2. Add horizontal scrollbars to account for long names. 3. Add a Preview list box that shows the fonts in the view port for the Family list box. This means that fonts don't have to be loaded until the Family list box view port displays them. Rather than load the fonts at startup, load them at runtime as needed. It's probably reasonable to apply a micro delay (say 50ms) so that scrolling through the Family list box is smooth and fonts are only loaded/rendered when the user stops scrolling for 50ms. Remove the preview from the Family list box. 4. Allow the user to provide custom preview text. Preview list box should present this text. Put a reasonable limit (e.g., 30 characters) on this. Perhaps this could be a select drop-down with various phrases that show all the letters (e.g., "Grumpy wizards...", "...lazy dog", "Cwm fjord...", "0123456789", plus a short history past user-defined phrases). 5. Allow the user to toggle the Preview list box. This could have a significant performance increase for people who don't need to preview all the fonts all the time. It could also save lots of memory. Additionally, it would free up screen real estate as the panel width would decrease by the Preview list box width. 6. Allow user to change font size and units. The size is shown as a drop-down in the mock-up, but the user should also be able to type in a specific size (e.g., 9.5) as per existing functionality. 7. Maybe allow the user to disable the scroll lock between the Family and Preview list box areas so that they can vary independently. Activating the lock automatically updates the Preview list box to reflect the Family list box view port. 8. Provide beefier handles to resize the pane. Resizing it should increase the height of the Family/Style/Preview list boxes, pushing the options (justification, size, space, etc.) down. Clicking on three tiny dots can be a daunting task for people with shaky hands... 9. Never disable the Set as Default / Apply buttons. If pressing the buttons won't do anything, then fail silently. Otherwise, always let the user click them and try to perform the appropriate action. Currently there's a bug where, in some cases, if the user changes the font size (but not the font), the Apply button remains disabled. Removing the code for disabling these buttons should simplify the source code and possibly force the developer to address the font size changing bug. Thoughts?

Snap for Inkscape

Howdy, So I (with some help from others) was trying to make a Snap for Inkscape. My goal was to make it so that, when we have it, we can get the 0.92 release to Ubuntu users on 16.04 LTS. Snaps do work for other Linux distros, but it is preinstalled on Ubuntu. The snap that I built is available here: https://code.launchpad.net/~ted/+snap/inkscape I have it built for i386 and amd64 right now for testing, but we can enable other architectures (armhf? arm64?) when we start getting to a real build. The snap is unoptimized and needs further testing, but I'd love it if other people could install it and send me their results. One major thing missing is the Python libs for the extensions. That's next on my TODO. For information on installing snapd on a variety of Linux distros you can get info here: http://snapcraft.io/docs/core/install Eventually I'd like to get a per-commit build going for the GTK3 release on the edge channel, but trying to get the stable release version working first. CMake migration in trunk

Dear All, I have completed the migration of Inkscape trunk to use CMake as its build system. This is already the preferred option for the 0.92.x release, and the PPA build has been using CMake successfully for the last couple of months. You will still be able to use Autotools or btool builds as a fallback option for the forthcoming stable Inkscape 0.92.x releases (lp:inkscape/0.92.x) but you will need to use CMake for the latest trunk builds (lp:inkscape), and for all future stable releases (0.93 onwards). This is part of a long-running plan to improve our build system, and will be much easier to maintain, and offer much better cross-platform support than our previous solutions. This represents a change in workflow for many developers and maintainers, so please accept our apologies for any inconvenience. We will very gratefully receive any bug reports, or answer any queries about this transition and use them to improve the package. Best wishes, Alex

Hi all, I've already finished my GSoC task, which is "P5. Better data structure for selections". In details I've done: - created ObjectSet class to be a base class for Selection - ObjectSet has a multi_index_container from Boost ( http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_61_0/libs/multi_index/doc/tutorial/basics.h…) instead many containers like vectors, lists and sets - created appropiate tests for this class in GoogleTest framework - replaced some functions returning vector to return range ( http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_61_0/libs/range/doc/html/range/reference/ad… ) - replaced own children list implementation from SPObject with boost intrusive list - added tests for new children list - replaced parameters in some functions (Selection with ObjectSet) - improved spray tool (there is no need to use selection now) Changes are ready and exist on my branch ( https://code.launchpad.net/~adrianboguszewski/inkscape/adrian). They will by merged to trunk in the near future. I'm waiting for c++11 flag :) As I still have about three weeks till GSoC end, I decided to start another project, which is new SAX parser. Investigating about the bug blocking the GTK migration on trunk, I find we can easy remove the widget in a temporary way, retaining the bug open to fix it but having a "working 0.92". Ping me if want to comment a line that cause the problem while the rendering bug is fixed. Also resend the Alex question: ¿If this bug is fixed, can we move trunk to GTK3 now? ¿Any objections? Move to GTK3

Hello All, As far as I've understood it is possible to create a snapshot of the UI in SVG format once you start using GTK 3.x. It would be a great boon for those active in the UI development if there was an SVG version of the UI to tinker with, rather than tonnes of bitmaps to cut and paste around. Can anyone tell me if this is already possible, or are there still constraints by the GTK 2.x code? If not, could someone please create a snapshot for the UI redevelopment effort in SVG format. Removal of GTK+ 2 support in Inkscape trunk

Summary: Removal of GTK+ 2 support in Inkscape trunk is proposed for w/c 2016-08-01. Comments and questions are very welcome. Dear All, We are planning to remove support for GTK+ 2 in Inkscape trunk. A full statement of the reasons and the implementation plans is given on this wiki page: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Notice_of_removal_of_GTK%2B_2_suppo… Please note that under this proposal, the forthcoming Inkscape 0.92 release *will* still use GTK+ 2, but all future releases will require GTK+ 3. As of now, development of the forthcoming Inkscape 0.92 release has been moved to the new lp:inkscape/0.92.x branch on Launchpad. You can grab a copy using: bzr branch lp:inkscape/0.92.x Please prioritise your efforts here on fixing any remaining "blocker" bugs, as listed at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bugs?field.tag=blocker The main Inkscape Trunk branch (lp:inkscape) will, from now on, be used for future releases (>= 0.93). If you wish to work on the code here, you will need to have the GTK+ 3 development libraries (and GTKmm, GDK+ 3 etc) available on your system. This is a major change, and the migration will inevitably cause some difficulties. However, the consensus among active developers is that the current situation of supporting both GTK+ 2 and GTK+ 3 is unmanageable. 0.92 release branch

Hello everyone, I made a branch for the 0.92 release under lp:inkscape/0.92.x. Currently the only change in this branch is the reversion of the SPCanvas widget changes that were causing performance regressions on some platforms. After 0.92, the following large changes are expected: - C++11 mode will be enabled. C++98 compilers will no longer be supported. - Autotools and btool build systems will be removed in favor of CMake. - Inkscape will be based on GTK3. GTK2 support will be removed. - At some point, code will be migrated to GitHub, to take advantage of automatic continuous integration with TravisCI. The bug tracker and answer tracker is expected to remain on Launchpad for the foreseeable future. Best regards, Krzysztof

Building on Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)

Hi All, Thought you might be interested to know that I've successfully built and run Inkscape on the new Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) in Windows 10 Insider Preview. This is a real boost to my workflow and I'd recommend it to anyone else who likes to develop on Linux, but uses Windows for their day job. It's pretty easy... just install WSL [1] and then you'll have a native Ubuntu shell that you can use on your Windows desktop. You can then set up a Linux build in the shell as normal.
