I need to point our website at a channel that could be more open to people joining from our website. Should we have an #inkscape-user irc channel and keep that open? Martin,

Hi all, I just saw this great bug movie by ~suv: https://launchpadlibrarian.net/151627755/ellipse-tool-r12602.gif ~suv used a tool called LICEcap: http://www-dev.cockos.com/licecap/ I think it is a great tool for bug-reports and for small feature demos. Unfortunately, although it can capture mouse clicks, I think it does not capture modifier key status (Ctrl+click for example)... Cheers, Johan

measurement tool

The new tool is nice, but how do I set the origin to anything other than the lower left corner? I want to use it to measure distances between arbitrary points. There must be a shortcut (such as Shift+click) to set the origin, and the current origin must be indicated on the screen at all times while the tool is active. The shortcut to set the origin must be added to the tool's statusbar hint. Also, "Font size" must be removed from the tool's controls - it's pure UI preference, not something you change in the document, so its presence here is quite confusing. I'd suggest placing it into the tool's page in Preferences. There's a funny bug: when I drag with Ctrl to snap and stretch the angle to 180 degrees, the circle arc turns into an ellipse.

Rev 1 Maths

Hail Devs, In display/sodipodi-ctrl.cpp:133 has some interesting maths. It does int((float(value) - 1.0) / 2.0 + 0.5) ... which is a bit redundant. My tests in python show that this produces the same output as int(float(value) / 2.0)) for all ints and floats. But this code has been there since MentalGuy committed rev 1. and It's passed through 2 developers since who thought it was sane. So I guess I need to make sure this isn't some C++ trick before I simplify it. Best Regards, Martin Owens

Update on the Metadata refactoring

Hi everyone In the beginning of the summer I set out to refactor the metadata code for Inkscape. In the end this turned out to be a bit bigger project than expected (as always? ;) ) but here is a short update. The last update was from the beginning of July which showed a GUI mockup [1] for the metadata tab. After that the gui was to be implemented in Inkscape but we weren't sure if the mockup was what we really wanted. Therefore in July/August we moved to python to be able to faster create and iterate over a prototype. The prototype can be found at github [2]. The goal in the long run is to create a C or C++ library with Gtk+ container which is ready for use in e.g. Inkscape that can handle everything that has to do with attribution and licenses. Related to this, work has also been done with a firefox plugin [3] and with mediagoblin. Code can be found on Github [4]. The short term goal here is to be able to show the "lifespan" of an image, "Creation -> Upload -> Download -> Create a derivative work -> Upload", and the attribution and license should stick with the image. So when it comes to the metadata refactoring it's pretty far away at the moment for pushing to trunk in Inkscape. I've now started my full time studies again so my goal for the fall is to at least take care of some bugs and try to learn a little bit more about the Inkscape codebase. Hi, First, congrats to Matthew for some very nice work. I've just given the latest code a quick test and I've got a few comments. I certainly haven't thought thing through carefully but I would be interested in what others think. I start by opening a new (from Templates) Letter in landscape mode. 1. The Template dialog tells me I am about to create a 612x792 pixel drawing. But the size of the drawing in the SVG file is set to 11in x 8.5in. Pixels are no where to be seen. 2. I create a default grid. The grid spacing is in "pixels" or 1/90 of an inch. I would expect it to be in fractions of an inch (1/4 or 1/10). 3. I set the grid to 1/4 of an inch with major grid line every 4 lines. Looks good. Now I create a rectangle 1 in x 1 in. Ooops, it is 0.99999988 x 0.99999988 according to the XML dialog. 4. I use the XML dialog to set it to exactly 1 x 1. Hmm, why isn't it 1in x 1in? 5. Ah ha, the viewBox is set to 0, 0, 11, 8.5. This means that the "user unit" aka "px" is equivalent to 1 inch. Maybe this isn't so bad, but it means I can't mix different units inside the SVG file. If I use "1in" for a dimension, it will be interpreted as 90 user units or 90 inches. My 20 "pt" text is stored as 0.277777776px in the SVG file (and shows up as 19.99 in the font-size widget). My thinking is that it might be better to set the viewBox to 0, 0, 792, 612 and then explicitly use dimensions with "in" if that is what the user wants. Tav

Hello to all. I made a new branch [1:bendFromClipboard] that make a bend liveeffect with a full draw in clipboard using pen or pencil stroke. It use the combo box in pen/pencil toolbox. I have this on mind time ago but need to credit Vinícius for the videos about his "Trace Pixel Art" feature, that refresh me. The code is working, need review -im not a c++ developer- and has one bug with selection. I explain: When all is done i call to "selection->set(obj)". "obj" exist but this code is ignored. Staging website - graphics sources

As I've worked piecemeal through small content updates on the staging.inkscape.org website I seen we need new graphic assets, especially for homepage banners, screenshots, and community gallery areas. The gallery on the existing website has operated as a timeline of version development and features. I think the new website gallery could be presented more as an showcase of artwork/design. But where should these images come from so this can be populated? My query in simple form is: from where should we source images for the new staging website? And how should permission-seeking work for using others' art? I've compiled below some areas where I see this could be crowd-sourced. Bryce, Is it possible to just set the amount of pixels per unit in Inkscape? The use case is as follows. I have a work flow that uses files created in Inkscape and I want to use 10px per mm. Why? Well,.. that way I can easily use these files in a web site editor where clients can edit the file and give it back to me. At this moment I have to contend with the insane 3.45etc. pixels per mm, bloating my files by a factor 9 or so and conversion errors on their way back into Inkscape that goes all Inches again. Writing a script for that is hell and it makes operations on the browser client a tad slow as it has to contend with constant conversions from 3.45etc. to wanted scale, to back to Inkscape hardcoded 90pdi, back to mm etc. Relations get lost and anyone manually checking the SVG code cracks his head (okay, 12mm border on a A4 page, so the x,y should be where again? 3.45etc. and that times 12, makes..ehm. Okay,.. calc,.. calc,.. now the right side should be exactly..duh). Would be so nice if it was just 120 left and 1980 right. I can dream those numbers and checking that is easy. My code would start making sense and I have no conversion loss. This whole sad nonsense would be over if I could just use a pixel / unit setting in Inkscape that allows me to define exactly how many pixels I want to use in the SVG file for what amount of unit. Wouldn't matter if those would be Inches, Meters, Zorkmits or whatever as long as I can define those lengths somewhere. I would think that for vector graphics, a pixel per unit setting should be fairly straightforward and we can prevent this hapless Inches to mm or whatever conversion swapping, work at much better precision (integers!), probably speed up things a bit with it and lo and behold create a wee bit cleaner files. For people that make icons it would be nice as well I bet to be able to set a 10 px:1 pixel ratio and have nice clean files. For anyone in the metric system, using a pixel per metric unit setting would be an absolute bliss. I could finally read my files and I would think that viewPort settings are intended to do just this. Define the friggin scale it is in. Refactoring low level calculations on shapes

Inkscape in Git

I've written a guide to how our developers can use git while developing inkscape: http://staging.inkscape.org/en/develop/using-git-repositories/ I've modified the required regular documentation to link these pages in too, we should have no problems allowing people to use git. The hosting provider we use for inkscape's code is launchpad. I like launchpad and I also think it would be way too much work to move inkscape to a less-useful project host like github or savanna just for git based remotes. Hopefully this kind of compromise on the client side can allow developers to not feel put out about our choice in repository technology.

Hey Devs, I'm calling on those who know to help write out new debugging page here: http://staging.inkscape.org/en/develop/debugging/ It needs to contain the information on the wiki here: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Debugging_Inkscape As well as information about logging (enabling, different log options), using gdb and links to where to get gdb help or a gui for gdb. Anything extra such as compile flags to improve logging and using cout or g_warning or g_info statements in code and when it's good to use them. I'd also like something about how to use the multiple packages we have in the trunk ppa system to narrow down a problem. I think SUV has this magic already, allowing other bug hunters and devels to know how to set that up would be very useful. Best Regards, Martin Owens

Launchpad Administrator changes for Inkscape

The Launchpad administration team for Inkscape handles commit access requests, and various other duties on the launchpad website. We keep the team limited to six people, which means adding a new admin requires swapping with one of the others. Ted Gould has decided to step back from the team, and allow Krzysztof to take on adminship. Welcome Krzysztof, and many thanks Ted for your service! Bryce P.S. a few other admins are due to renew membership in October; if they choose not to renew, then we may need to ask for volunteers to fill those slots. I will follow up later if this is the case.

SPGenericEllipse "d" attribute

Hi all, While fixing bug #1227193 i have encoutered strange behaviour of SPGenericEllipse. When a new ellipse is drawn, the "d" attribute in corresponding svg:path element is set by SPGenericEllipse::write and contains arcs. However in SPGenericEllipse::update_patheffect, triggered by document idle handler, "d" attribute is regenerated from SPCurve and has other value. Instead of two arcs there are four curve elements. I would like to address this issue. Since those are my first steps in inkscape development, I have some quesions. 1) Should I add arcto method to SPCurve and make both SPGeneralEllipse methods generate the same "d" attribute value? 2) Why there are two different methods that generate "d" attribute value? Should one of them (sp_arc_set_elliptical_path_attribute or sp_svg_write_path call in update_patheffect) be removed? 3) Should static function sp_arc_set_elliptical_path_attribute be c++-fied to private member method? Right now, I'm working on updating wiki pages related to my project. Of course, if anyone of you has any suggestions for fixes or cleanups related to things I've been working on, I'll be glad to include them after the GSoC. Removal Of Objects from Selection

How can I keep track of objects being removed from the selection ? [ I have been digging through the desktop.cpp/inkscape.cpp/selection.cpp files and couldn't find any noteworthy construct that let me do it. ] Also, if I bubbled up signal emission, how can that be achieved ? If widget A contains B which contains C. So I want "released" signal of A to be invoked when "released" signal of C is invoked. Two Week Status

Hey Devs, Two weeks ago I sent a message asking about a new Inkscape release. Over the past two weeks, we've managed to close the vast majority of blocking bugs and of the last 3, 2 are in progress: In Progress #850992 Top layer, Blend mode is multipy, Pattern disappear In Progress #953992 Imported pattern fill disappers while transforming Triaged #1005892 Patterns applied to text objects are blurred The other blocker is our cairo render issue, which I'm counting on the fix being delivered to our build system and making sure we have the library in our ppa/trunk ready to go. I'm wondering if I can get someone to work on this? We have 16 regressions currently reported: http://tinyurl.com/o9lq44w and I think about 2 or 3 floating in the mailing list which people are working on already. We have 56 bugs targeted to 0.49 reported: http://tinyurl.com/l3glywq and these will probably include the above bugs. It looks like our GSoC projects will take a week or three to settle and clear. Although it looks like the majority of work is in already. I think we're in great shape for a release target. [CAD] Status report

Hi, I made the code more useable and fixed some selection issues. Also, points can now be in groups. A point is added to a group by selecting the group (and nothing else) and shift-clicking to create the point. I am working on a UI to add one or more existing points to a group. Undo/redo does not yet work properly together with the connector context, I had one crash and the point handles do not yet get updated when undoing/redoing. I am working on this. [ It has to be hooked to "released" signal of RecolorWheelNode ] + Handling removal of objects: This is the problem area right now. My mentor replied this morning (my time) with an approach to handle removing objects. I am going to try working with that. If this goes downhill, I'll try Sebastian idea. Either way, I plan to stick around and am determined to finish what I intended when starting with GSoC. Rending Multiple Times?

Hey Devs, I'm investigating bug lp:850992 (very hard to track down), and I notice something odd. Each time I group or ungroup two objects, the render code on DrawingItem is called many times. I want to know if this is expected and typical behavior since we could be wasting lots of resources re-rendering the same item ever time we click on it or move it. Weird fallback mechanism for input data in python scripts

Hi All, I found some unexpected behaviour with inkex-based extensions if a non-existent SVG filename is specified. To reproduce: cd share/extensions ./gimp_xcf.py non-existent-file.svg Expected behaviour: * Script exits with an error message "Unable to open non-existent-file.svg" Actual behaviour: * Script silently falls back to reading from standard input, and appears to freeze. This appears to be caused by the fallback mechanism for obtaining data streams in the Effect.parse() function in inkex.py. At the moment, it does this: 1. Try to read file specified as a function argument e.g., my_effect.parse("this-file.svg) 2. If that file can't be opened, try to read the file specified in self.svg_file 3. If that file can't be opened, read from stdin This could lead to some weirdness e.g., e = ProcessImportantData() # Specify the wrong file name somewhere e.svg_file = "wrong-input-data.svg" # Later, try to read from the correct file, but with a typo e.parse("correct-input-data-with-typo.svg_BORK") # When we apply the effect, the "correct-input-data-with-typo.svg_BORK" file doesn't exist, and the script will silently fall back to using the wrong data file. e.effect() I have attached a patch that changes the behaviour so that the same order of precedence is maintained, but the script will fail if the specified file cannot be opened. I'm not the best Python programmer, and I don't know the precise intended behaviour of the extensions system, so please could someone review/comment? AV

And I am of a similar opinion that if money is being paid for development, let's try targeting it to the stuff we need the most that volunteers don't want to bother with. That sounds very logical. If you would indulge me to blather on a bit more on this topic... I think one problem with the bug bounty programs was that they paid on a per-bug basis. But like I think someone else pointed out, often 90% of the work is just learning the codebase; then the developer could swat a dozen bugs all at once. So, we might want to organize the work as not to fix a specific bug for $, but to fix a collection of closely related bugs for $$$. As to whom to find to do the work, there are a number of options. Hiring an existing Inkscape developer seems least-risk; they will have already climbed at least part of the learning curve and demonstrated their ability and dedication. But finding one who is available and interested could be tricky. Alternatively, we could find a cheap external developer. I think this would increase the administrative workload, and likely wouldn't result in an ongoing developer. But for particularly unenjoyable work, maybe that's acceptable. And there's probably half a dozen other ideas. We've had good success with GSoC, and so something that builds on that (Winter of Bugs?) might be worth thinking about. There are also possibilities beyond just direct paying for development. For example, if we increased our presence at conventions that might pull in more ordinary volunteer developers. Training is another avenue I think could be good. Either arranging some development tutorials ourselves, to help users graduate into developers, or even sending existing active developers to developer training classes (to learn new tricks for performance optimization, debugging, etc.) I am also a big believer in the power of bug triagers to help make bugs easier to fix, such as by helping gather stack traces or document steps to reproduce. This may seem minor, but it's a prerequisite to finding a developer and is tedious work so could be hard to find a volunteer. We would need this person to be reliable and responsive, able to talk with the lawyers, and prepared to make tough decisions. In fact this was my main counterargument to Brad's suggestion; he indicated the conservancy would love to help on the financing/legal end, but part of the management of this would have to come from us. This has been essentially the same problem the board has run into with other proposed activities - someone needs to take the coordinator role to get it organized. So that's my thinking. Before we start really talking about a paid bug fixer, we need someone to volunteer to do coordination and administration. Or lacking a volunteer, it's an important enough role we could consider making it a part-time paid role, particularly if we could raise enough money for multiple efforts. Bryce

I was trying to optimize the location of all points (not only control points. Sorry for the useless email, but I just wanted to share my frustration. Signals Help

Hi all, I have a conceptual doubt. Suppose widget A houses widget B which hereby houses widget C. Can I associate same strings "changed", "updated" etc.. with individual signals of each widget A,B,C. Also, when I emit a "changed" signal will all three widgets execute their call backs ? Notes for r12550 (Status Bar Text)

Hey Devs, In r12550 I had to do more changes then I expected fixing bug lp:1199192 and I want to FYI them here. At first I thought the broken collection status was from my previous work. But it turned out the functionality had been gutted by refactoring work from elsewhere. (C++ification I think) So I decided to continue the work and re-factored this too. Each object now has a new display_name() method which returns a translated const char* for use in the status bar. description() now returns everything but the display_name (some fixes in consistency here too) and getDetailedDescription returns the whole lot plus mask/clip info. This getDetailedDescription is used in the single item status bar and replaces the vanilla description(). This should improve information about clip/mask and give more consistency for single items. display_name() is used to get a list of types. For Ubuntu users, PPAs seem to be a commonly used solution to this type of problem. This would be straightforward to implement and I shouldn't think it would cause that much surprise to users. For non-technical users I can see how the process might be a bit inconvenient; is that what folks are worried about? If we're really just concerned here with developers being able to build Inkscape on 12.04, I'm sure they could handle installing junk from a PPA. Another option is to get the dependencies added through backports. As a general rule they never backport libraries, so this seems like a non-option for cairo / pixman, however it might be worth checking into if people feel the PPA solution is insufficient. Pixman and Cairo are both well maintained, so you never no. I've seen crazier things accepted. If the need for newer cairo/pixman is narrow enough (i.e. just the downscaling fix), rather than put the libs in-tree, what about just adding an autoconf check for the cairo version, and then just #ifdef the appropriate code, so inkscape will build and work with old cairo/pixman (with the bug) as well as newer cairo/pixman (with the fix). This seems like it would give the most flexibility for everyone, without being terribly messy. Carrying an #ifdef to 2017 might be more palatable than two entire source trees... Bryce

I proposed a merge: https://code.launchpad.net/~vinipsmaker/inkscape/libdepixelize/+merge/185237 The code is based on current practice, I think (grep is my friend). The changes between my choices and the code that inspired me was favoring C ++ish interfaces when available. I have to say that Inkscape is pretty huge and took me some time to finish this integration. The whole libdepixelize was developed with Inkscape in mind and integration was very straigh forward. There are options to generate voronoi diagrams, B-Splines and optimized B-Splines. I'm still working on B-Splines optimization and it's not possible to get a optimized output right now, but the interface is done and after I implement this step the only update required will be a "libdepixelize release bumping", with no code changes required to Inkscape itself. I went beyond Kopf-Lischinski to preserve more color information and the result is quite nice, but when you have a really evil gradient the result will be worse. The "worse" result is caused by a small bug (can and will be fixed) and have small artifacts (no crash, don't worry). Also, I made a major refactor on a large part of the project that will make it 4 times more maintainable and greatly abstracts memory layout access. The memory layout access abstraction is important to implement the suggested improvement (cache oblivious algorithm) by Nathan Hurst. I improved the "depixelize" binary, so it can be packed by distros. This is what I remember so far, but there were a lot of changes and I'm sure I'm missing some one. Hi all, Sorry for not being able to give a report for the past two weeks. I was in regular touch with my mentor though, as well as Josh. The project stands as such: 1.) The nodes are added to the wheel when a new object is added to the active selection. 2.) Removal of nodes is a tricky issue. We are working on that currently. 3.) Updating of objects on the canvas was achieved earlier on. That snippet has to be used for active editing after the removal issue is solved. >From discussions with my mentor and Josh, we all concur that the project can only achieve its first half into completion in the given time frame. I'm a little confused because the bug is about pasting objects, and I can only assume that we get a pointer to a block of data when someone pastes things in and we stuff that into an image object of some kind. Filter Display and Cache

Hey Devs, I've just pushed r12525 which should fix an error where moving filtered items wasn't using the right bbox. http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/trunk/revision/12525 What concerns me is two things: That this was effecting text elements, but not other items suggests that _bbox and _item_bbox were different for text but not for other items. Which is odd and should probably be fixed too. The other is that I've removed the now unused compute_drawbox. It mentioned converting to user units and I may have inadvertently hurt something there by using area_enlarge instead. Any unit people want to confirm this is safe or unsafe? Hello Jabier, I think for testing it's best if you install your trunkinkscape into a separate folder. Let's say you've got your sources in/home/jabier/Inkscape/trunk, then you should build it like that: ./autogen.sh ./configure --prefix=/home/jabier/Inkscape/trunk_install make make install You can then run src/inkscape and it will find the filesin your local trunk_install directory. If Gimp can reach out to their genuine user base and get artists into the feature, then they stand a chance. OTOH if they can only communicate to other developers, or a selection of users who are fanatical. Then the funding will be hard to raise. Fix for blocker bug #953992, Imported pattern fill disappers while transforming (regression)

Hi devs, I might just have fixed this blocker bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/953992; well at least the problem cannot be reproduced and I haven't noticed any new regressions, but I am not sure if this fix is correct. Let me try to explain: When a pattern is imported, e.g. from Adobe Illustrator, then it might have a view box set. This is just fine, as this viewbox is accounted for by Inkscape. Now when an object that uses this pattern is moved, a new pattern is introduced to account for the translation. So we now have: object -> mother pattern (with transform) -> child pattern (as imported) The child pattern has a view box set, but the current code only considered the viewbox of the newly introduced mother pattern... which didn't have a viewbox set. This is why the pattern wasn't drawn. I've modified the code to consider the viewbox of the child pattern instead. This works for the files attached to the bug report, and doesn't seem to break anything. However, isn't this all a bit too fragile? What if both the mother pattern and child pattern have a view box set? Is there a teeny-tiny wibbly-wobbly subset of documents in which this can actually occur? ;-). BTW, our stock patterns do not have a viewbox, and neither do patterns generated from objects. This is why this bug was only visible for imported patterns. Also, this bug was introduced when moving to the new cairo rendered in which a significant part of pattern rendering code (in sp-pattern.cpp) was modified. Thanks, Diederik

As for the release of the staging website, I'm still planning on releasing what ever content we have in Novemeber 14th to live. I figure everyone will be happy with it by then. [CAD] Status

Hi, this week I ironed out all crashes I could find and fixed the libavoid routing I recently broke. I fixed loading/saving of documents containing connectors and points (yay!) and back-ported the parts of the code that would need C++11 to compile to pre-C++11. Tomorrow I will test more complicated libavoid routing and make a plan for object inclusion/exclusion selection and make a test build to verify everything works on a clean system followed by a few test runs inside valgrind. Remaining TODOs are icons for the toolbar buttons, undo handling, some more advanced point manipulation functions (mainly putting points in groups/taking them out of groups) and, finally, rebasing everything onto upstream. And there is the mystery of the lost cursor, but I think I'll figure that one out. The current code can be found at [0]. [Recolor] Signals, Selection and more

Hi, I have been at work the whole day today. I fixed all crash related issues. Right now, when I select objects on the canvas, a respective node is added onto the recolor wheel. The node is draggable and changes color accordingly. I haven't added the xml related code that shall modify the color property on the canvas. I am trying to fathom if I can somehow use the selection object to keep track of which object was just deleted. Adding the nodes to the wheel is not a problem, deleting it from the wheel is. If I toggle the selection of an object, its node should disappear from the wheel. I am guessing it has something to do with *selectModifiedConn *? Also, if an object in the selection changed its color, its node should be automatically updated. This again has to do with the selection. [CAD] Status

Hi, this week I changed the SPPoint selection to use Inkscape's normal selection mechanics instead of the control-point-selection.cpp. This has the advantage that selecting points and connectors at the same time is not quite as bad a hack as it would be otherwise. Doing this I introduced a new signal for selection/deselection in SPObject. I also changed the UI a lot to make it possible to reconnect connectors. SPPoints are now created by shift-clicking into the document while the selection is empty. If the selection is not empty, shift-click toggles the selection of the object under the cursor. Control-click should work as expected with groups. Connectors are terminated by clicking on the end point or somewhere in empty space (in which case a new SPPoint will be created on the clicked location). Sometimes stray points still appear because I have not yet found out how to delete SPPoints without crashing Inkscape. I am working on that. Connector deletion appears to work now. SPPoint deletion still has its issues. After deleting a SPPoint, Inkscape crashes with ominous memory corruption errors. I was unable to find the cause of that so far. I will push a commit later that allows easy reproduction of this. Sebastian

It seems to work fine, but there is a new message at the beginning: Unable to find: DialogScript ** (inkscape:14139): WARNING **: Unknown verb name: DialogScript Is that something old that has been partly removed, or is it something new that has been partly implemented? Hi all, I was able to spot the reason for the crashes. It was the type-casting that was causing a pointer nullification. With a few modifications I was able to fix that I got to render the nodes onto the wheel. Rethinking revision 12471

I recently became aware of revision 12471, and overall, I am afraid that the way in which it was implemented is detrimental to the readability and future maintenance of the Inkscape code. Presumably the underlying function it implements is to allow changes in the ratio PX/IN, and other units of measurement, and I have no issue with that goal. However, prior to 12471 all of the unit relationships were neatly set up in a set of defines in src/unit-constants.h which defined things like PX_PER_IN which were used elsewhere in the code. These evaluated to static values, and the new ones do not, but that does not negate the usefulness of the define. 12471 removes all of these defines and makes substitutions throughout the code where PX_PER_IN is replaced by Inkscape::Util::Quantity::convert(1, "in", "px") My first criticism is that the new quantity is at first glance, indeterminate. Is it converting IN to PX or vice versa, what does "1" do? My second criticism is that eliminating the defines results in hundreds of substitutions in 12471 that are entirely unnecessary. All that was required was to change the defines in src/unit-constants.h, for instance from #define PX_PER_IN (PT_PER_IN / PT_PER_PX) to #define PX_PER_IN Inkscape::Util::Quantity::convert(1, "in", "px") after which virtually no changes elsewhere in the code are required. By doing that, the existing and relatively clear code, like: p0[X] = (p0[X] * IN_PER_PX * dwDPI); need not become the obfuscated (to my mind) form: p0[X] = (p0[X] * Inkscape::Util::Quantity::convert(1, "px", "in") * dwDPI); Before 12471 PX_PER_IN already evaluated to a complex expression, and the whole point of the define was to let the compiler handle that mess and only present to the programmer a short easily understood term. 12471 is a step backwards in this regard. I was reviewing the templates work by Jan Darowski and it got me thinking about the FreeDesktop.org XDG spec; it has a provision for a templates directory that we should be using instead of (or as well as) ~/.config/inkscape/ which is hidden from the user. Hi, Recap: I made a separate container for RecolorWheel. Initially there was an initialization error that crashed the application. As pointed out by Krzysztof, the std::map<std::string, RecolorWheelNode> had to be explicitly initialized which made the crash go away. The Recolor Dialog box renders perfectly. Invoking the DialogBox in Inkscape was causing a crash (before the explicit initialization of map) . Unfortunately, the application still crashes when I draw a new object on the canvas. Basically the crash happens when I select an object on the canvas. I was debugging the errors in gdb using g_message but here is the tricky part: When I run the inkscape.exe without gdb the application crashes only when the RecolorArtwork Dialog is active and an object on the canvas is selected. But, in gdb the application starts constantly giving the warning: " HEAP: Free heap block a90b8f6 modified at a90b8f6 after it was freed. " As a result the application doesn't get to the point where I can invoke RecolorArtwork and debug it. My latest branch can be found at: https://code.launchpad.net/~moduli16/inkscape/recolor . Fix for #771957: interleaved text and graphics in pdf+latex output

The current implementation of pdf+latex renders all text objects (LaTeX) above all graphical objects (PDF). I needed to export a figure with text interleaved with graphics---essentially bug #771957---so I implemented a simple fix for it. I'd like to see this (or, more likely, a modified version) merged for 0.49, but I'm not sure who maintains the pdf+latex renderer. Please let me know how to help. There was a placement drive in my college (which took place in October every year but was pre-poned to August this year) and hence I was busy studying. I resumed work on the project from 17th August. In a previous discussion with Ted and Krzysztof , it was concluded that making an all-together separate ColorSelector class for RecolorWheel would be better and much more convenient to code. I was busy doing that this week. Now what remains is to hookup the signals for the recolor wheel. The class nesting of Paint-Selector, GimpWheel etc has me caught a bit right now. Solving bug #166371 - SAX parser

Hello After fixing the XXE vulnerability, Inkscape can no longer read SVGs that use entities in URLs. Notable cases include SVGs saved from Adobe Illustrator. There does not seem to be a way to replace these entities without reintroducing the XXE vulnerability. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/166371 I just wanted to point out that the best way to solve this would be to use libxml2's SAX parser or the newer XmlTextReader parser to directly construct the tree of Inkscape::XML::Node's, instead of postprocessing the XML tree obtained from the DOM-like parser. With this approach, we could intelligently substitute only string entities and ignore entities that point to URLs or external files. An additional bonus would be a reduction in memory use and load time, since the libxml2 DOM tree would not be created. http://www.xmlsoft.org/xmlreader.html Regards, Krzysztof

Hi, I have an SVG file which I want to burn using a laser cutter, and I was hoping to use inkscape to remove the overlapping line segments which are causing a problem with the laser cutter. (Where two lines in different shapes overlap, the line is cut once for each shape, leaving a heavier line). Hi, This week I mainly squashed some bugs. The current code [0] still requires -std=c++11 in the CXXFLAGS. Connector creation is working properly now, without stray points left over afterwards. Points can be selected in groups which can be transformed (scale, shear, rotate, translate etc.). Simple orthogonal routing and straight routing work. Libavoid routing works as far as there are no objects to be avoided (I did not yet test it with objects to be avoided). Multiple connectors can be connected to the same endpoint. Remaining problems are: * When moving a connector in selection mode ([F1]), sometimes a stray point appears somewhere inside the bounding box of the original connector (strange one!). * Connector aborting does not work yet. I deactivated these 10 lines for now. * There are some open UI questions: - How to disconnect connectors? - How to re-connect connectors to different endpoints? - How to edit SPPoints as parts of groups? How to move them into groups? - Probably some more which I forgot * Libavoid routing is still untested. * Sporadically, I manage to get the UI into some infinite recursion. Sebastian, Good to see you're making some progress squashing bugs. I've played around a little bit with the code. Here are a few observations: 1. Points (ports) need to be shown on the screen independent of whether or not they are attached to connectors. 2. Creating a connector should use a pre-existing point (port) if the cursor is near a point at the start or create a new point if it is not. The same thing should happen for the end point. 3. A distinction needs to be made between dragging a freely movable start/end point and moving a connector end from one port to another. 4. In your current code, drawing a simple connector creates a start point and an end point at the beginning of creating a connector. At the end, a new end point is created but doesn't seem to be actually used. 5. There needs to be one final redraw at the end of creating a connector. Since getting something out of Doug is like pulling teeth, I've put together a page on what I envision SVG 2 connectors to look like.[1] The key point (no pun intended) is that connection points can be defined using percentage values related to the objects they are part of or to the connector end points themselves. The one problem I have is how to specify a connection point inside a <symbol>. I hope to discuss this at the next SVG Working Group meeting. Your feedback (or anybody else's feedback) is welcome. Hi, This week, again I feel I spent way too much time in gdb I moved the code from using SPKnot for handles to ui/tool/ControlPoint. I did this not for dragging (SPKnot has built-in dragging) but for the selection feature of SelectableControlPoint s. Connector creation by dragging or clicking both ends works now, live preview works, saving connectors works. Remaining are a couple of segfaults: One when closing inkscape without saving just after a Connector has been created while the connector tool is still active, and one when I try to drag an endpoint of the connector. This one is actually quite tricky, I have not yet been able to track down its cause properly. Another issue is that when a Connector is created with two clicks (but *not* when it is created via dragging), I have a leftover SPPoint at its start. I think I know where this comes from, but I have not yet found out how to properly delete a SVG object in inkscape without segfaulting. And finally, though I can save SPPoints and SPConnectors just fine to SVG, I can't load them yet. I would appreciate some eyes on the connector creation code in SPConnector.cpp with respect to the SPPoint dragging segfaults. I am not very confident of my work in ref/unrefing things in the connector context. The code can be found at [0]. To compile it, add -std=c++11 to your CPPFLAGS. It still needs that for a little variadic template I wrote. I will change this to a bunch of non-variadic ones for pre-C++11 before integrating. Gtk+ 3 test-binaries now in PPA

Hi All, Daily builds of Inkscape with experimental support for Gtk+ 3 are now available in the trunk PPA. I've named the package "inkscape-trunk-gtk3". So... 1. We now get early warnings about build-failures with Gtk+ 3. However, please remember to do a local test build with Gtk+ 3 support before pushing any major GUI changes to trunk. 2. It's now easy to test the Gtk+ 3 version on Ubuntu without needing to manually build from source Note that there's a bug tag "gtk3" for tracking the (numerous) runtime errors [1]. Boolean ops (again!)

Hi devs, I'm looking at Boolean operations (particularly Difference ops) on real-world SVG files again, and I've come across another bug, which I've reported here for posterity: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1209281. This comes with a sample SVG file which might reproduce the bug. Note that I say "might" because it is reproduced on the current trunk on my x86 Ubuntu 12.04, but not on the latest Windows build I'm running (0.48.4). I aim to have a look into what's going on here and hopefully come up with a patch - I've looked through the livarot code in a bit of detail now, and I think I understand at a basic level how the various path-intersection algorithms are implemented (particularly wrt quantization of coordinates and the implications for the sweep-line method). Meanwhile, a couple of questions: 1) While I expect I'll be able to fix the current unstable behaviour (occasional copying of topmost path's coords into bottom-most path during difference operations, for too-small paths that "fall through" the quantization grid), the whole requirement for quantization in livarot is a bit unsatisfactory. Longer-term, it might be nice to switch to a path-intersection algorithm without the quantization restriction, and that deals better with degenerate cases - perhaps something like the CGAL 2D intersection methods ( http://www.cgal.org/Manual/beta/doc_html/cgal_manual/packages.html#part_VII… I believe this part of CGAL is GPL licensed, is this an issue? Thoughts? 2) I keep coming across code in Inkscape that could be improved with the RAII pattern (particularly, things like: { Thing *t = new Thing(); ... do stuff with t ... delete t; } When writing new code, I'd much prefer to use smart pointers, e.g. { std::unique_ptr<Thing> t(new Thing()); ... do stuff with t ... } Obviously things like std::unique_ptr and std::shared_ptr require (part of) C++11. I note that parts of inkscape use boost::shared_ptr - is use of boost the way to go in this case, to keep support for older (non-C++11) compilers? Thanks Eric

Basically, a couple of dead files were not removed from the POTFILES.in list. Staging website blueprints up

All the current webpages are now reflected in blueprints for the staging website: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/inkscape-web I've used the nomenclature of "+" to indicate child pages, and to include the parent page in the title. There are a number of blank pages still existing: *about+overview *about+screenshots (at least not much) *community *community+gallery (limited) *learn *contribute *contribute+contributor-stats *develop (not much more than descriptions and links to the child content) What stands out to be in this review is that _many of the parent pages are blank_. I also understand that this is the staging site which has not been completed. I would prefer we not simply fill a void by adding content, or simply add links to the content on the child pages. Rather, is there a strong reason for these parent pages to exist at all, beside simply adding a category for the necessary child pages? If there is a vision for these pages I would like to see that reflected in our blueprints. Otherwise I think we may see need to consider a revision of the menu structure to keep a simple site and not loose users in the multiplicity of pages. I would love to contribute more in filling content, if suggestions can be made within these blueprints or through the mailing list! Thanks. --Jared

Somewhere halfway, there is some error checking it seems, that sets size explicitly to some hardcoded default value of 12.0. But again this is never used in the method. Is it a bug? [CAD] Next steps, a trivia question and discussion of the semantics for what objects a connector should avoid

Hi, I'm moving on refactoring the connectors code. I just changed the toolbar a little bit so every connector type has its own button. During refactoring, two questions arised: 1. What does "Ege" as in "EgeAdjustmentAction" mean? 2. What semantics do we want concerning which objects are to be avoided by a connector? A little elaboration on the second question: Currently, Inkscape uses libavoid to route object-avoiding connectors. All object which should be avoided by the router are added an "inkscape:connector-avoid" attribute. This does not, e.g., allow an object to be avoided by certain connectors and ignored by others. I can currently see three obvious solutions to that problem: * Avoid objects based on group/layer membership. E.g. avoid any objects on the same top-level layer but ignore others. * Avoid objects based on a "tag". This is not unlike the current approach, but I would really use a class instead of an own attribute for this to be easily interoperable with other implementations of this, especially a potential javascript router as discussed with Doug Schepers from w3c, who is currently working on a SVG connectors spec. Personally, I favor the second solution since I think it is less hacky and more flexible. I think it would be a sane choice to have connectors avoid objects by default and to explicitely mark objects to be ignored while routing. If you wanted a connector ignoring any objects you could just use the non-libavoid routing types I am just adding. * Any combination of the above If you have any thoughts on this, please share them with me ;) I'm now moving on to implement (somewhat minimalistic) "points" as described in [0] so I can then head towards renovating connector-context.cpp. My latest commit to launchpad breaks in an assertion when drawing a connector since it needs these changes. The commit before that should work, though. These "points" will be placed whenever one places a connector's end, except if one places a connector's end on an existing "point". When drawing a connector, all visible points will be rendered as knots. This enables template-based diagram elements which are just are groups that contain a shape and one or more points for the connector to attach. I will remove any logic from connector-context responsible for handling anything but two endpoints (if you want to draw a connector with multiple "stops", just chain together multiple connectors) and remove the "snap connector end point to connector's intersection with destination shape outline"-logic since I do not think this is too useful. XMLCh ch = get(p); if (p != '{') { error("@page requires '{' before declarations"); } Shouldn't that be if (ch != '{') ? It happens a number of times in that function and looks like a bug to me. Hi, I just pushed some changes to launchpad that fix the GObject instantiation problem I had [0]. I am now explicitely initializing the members to 0. Next comes some cleanup integrating the feedback I received. The current code allows one to place SPPoints and SPConnectors in the document, the three major problems left are state handling in the ConnectorContext (dragging does not work yet), live preview (the "red curve" is not displayed/updated yet) and a missing/superfluous display->doc transform. memset on SPStyle

Hi all, I just came across this piece of code: memset(style, 0, sizeof(SPStyle)); That looks terrifying! SPStyle is a huge struct, containing member objects (sigc::connection) besides just simple integers and enums. CPPCheck complains with "Using 'memset' on struct that contains a virtual method.". I can't find any virtual methods in SPStyle, but still it looks like a bad bug. I have disabled that line of code, and added extra re-init lines in r12452. Please have a look and confirm the fix. [Tracing] Library integration/API design

So, I reached a point where I know how the next steps can be implemented, but, differently from before, the next steps on libdepixelize can have a big impact on how it will be integrated on Inkscape. I decided it would be a good thing to discuss this matter with other developers. Currently it's possible to represent simple paths on libdepixelize (see this), but to implement the full Kopf-Lischinski algorithm, I'll need to have paths with "holes" and I'll need to use complex path representations with enough expressive power to communicate things like "point start in A, then do a Bézier to C...". I don't want to create a new interface to represent paths, because this interface already exists and it's called SVG. Dear All, I have enabled automatic testing (make check) in the trunk PPA, so we'll now have an early warning system for runtime errors. Please can I draw your attention to the known test failures [1]: #1202271 cxxtest: preferences-test.h fails #1208002 cxxtest: svg-length-test.h fails (in progress) #1208005 cxxtest: svg-path-geom-test.h fails #1208013 cxxtest: curve-test.h fails #1207502 cxxtest: svg-affine-test.h fails At the moment, PPA builds will (correctly) fail if the extension tests fail, but will still succeed in the case of errors in Inkscape itself until we fix *all* of the broken tests above. It therefore makes sense to try to fix all of these in time for Inkscape 0.49 so that we have a correctly functioning unit test system. 2 questions: Walk through all nodes and the two "different trees" SPObject/agnostic XML

I'm trying to walk through a complete document and get all nodes of a specific type, in this case <metadata> to populate the new metadata GUI. My best bet now is to get the current active SPDocument and start to iterate from the root node, depth-first. I've found the sp_repr_lookup_name in "src/xml/repr.h" which do exactly that but stops at the first hit so I would have to wrap it somehow and run it multiple times. If I've understood this correctly it will work on the agnostic XML backbone and not with SPObjects which I should be using but then again RDF implementation doesn't use SPObject in its current state. Am I on the right track or totally lost? (within repr-util.cpp it seems like you can iterate through a XML::Node's all children with the help of firstChild() and next(), perhaps better than using the c facade function, but will it work with RDF nodes?) So to my second part, somewhat related, In sp-object.h a comment says "[...] SPObject layer is bound to the SPRepr layer, closely following the SPRepr mutations via callbacks." We have the typed object layer with SPObjects and the agnostic XML layer with SPRepr. The confusion for me now is concerning variable naming, I think, throughout Inkscape codebase both "repr" and "node" are used as variable names for XML::Node objects. Is SPRepr the old "name" for XML::Node? If yes, this would mean that everything below Inkscape::XML do work on the the agnostic XML backbone layer and not the SPObjects, have I understood this correctly? Regards -- Christoffer Holmstedt

Member initialization is already done before the constructor is even entered, and member destruction happens automatically after the destructor returns. I'm fairly sure this will lead to problems at runtime. 2. A lot of the constructor code should be changed to member initializers. See e.g. the constructor of SPItem. 3. Class names such as CSomething are reminiscent of MFC. The prefixes should be removed and the classes put in namespace Inkscape::SVG (since they represent objects in the SVG). 4. "#pragma once" is not used in existing Inkscape code. For consistency you should use standard include guards. 5. singleton.h should be merged into sp-factory.h. Singletons should be avoided where possible, so a separate singleton header is not a good idea. Boost doesn't have a singleton header for the same reason. 6. The virtual methods should be made protected, since they are not intended for use outside of SP node implementations. Hello all, Because I'd been stuck on the second goal for so long, I decided to get on to write the GUI subsytem, which was actually my third and final task for the midterm evaluation. I have written the paint_recolor_nodes( ) function successfully. Here is a screenshot: [image: Inline image 1] The black outlined, white colored (with color inside) are the intended nodes that will function in the final render. Now I'll move onto writing the events that trigger repainting and node dragging. I cannot work on these events making actual changes till the brick-wall issues are resolved. Hi Johan, In the thread on GObject instantiation you happened to raise an interesting issue that probably warrants some good discussion. You had mentioned that adding more to the headers "Saves some time wading through lengthy .cpp files only to find an almost empty function". Do you think you can expand a little on your use case where this type of practice is an issue? That is, can you give a quick description of some of the steps you would be going through when this problem pops up? I know that different people have different learning and processing styles. (As an extreme example I've even worked with someone whose workflow was impacted by a change in Emacs that limited the number of open windows to only a couple hundred.) It would be good to be sure that we try to get things structured well for easier maintenance, etc. Thanks.

GObject object instantiation problem

Hi, I'm currently having some problems allocating GObjects. I just added a class called SPPoint [0]. When I try to instantiate an object of that type (whether through SPObject/sp_object_child_added or manually from GDB using g_object_new does not matter), g_object_new returns an GObject* that contains a zero class: {g_type_instance = {g_class = 0x0}, ref_count = 0, qdata = 0x0} (this is not good as it breaks everything else about G_OBJECT). I was able to track down the problem to g_type_create_instance returning that when passed the new SPPoint type: (gdb) print sp_object_get_type() $13 = 20593552 (gdb) print sp_point_get_type() $14 = 20619024 (gdb) print *((GObject*)g_type_create_instance(sp_point_get_type())) $20 = {g_type_instance = {g_class = 0x0}, ref_count = 0, qdata = 0x0} (gdb) print *((GObject*)g_type_create_instance(sp_object_get_type())) $21 = {g_type_instance = {g_class = 0x16ec560}, ref_count = 1, qdata = 0x0} I'm currently building a glib with debugging symbols to further track down this problem. [Units] Completion of Phase One

I have now eliminated "unit-constants.h", removing the last of the duplicate general unit code. The one remaining section of somewhat duplicate unit code is the "SVGLength" class, but that is specific to the SVG specification, not general units. I plan on leaving it alone for now but may make it a child class of "Util::Unit" during phase two. I have submitted a merge proposal for my branch [1]. I don't seem to get what you mean by "values" and "building blocks"? Is it necessary to create a class just holding a key and a value? Wouldn't a std::map suffice? 1) The SPObject class exposes a method "connectModified" which you can use to register a sigc::slot with the modification signal. This should work I hope. Or look at "src/ui/dialog/document-metadata.cpp". Inside this file there's a method called "on_repr_attr_changed": /** * Called when XML node attribute changed; updates dialog widgets. */ I don't know why this does not work currently. 2) Sorry? When the xml tree is modified, the corresponding SPObject is automatically informed, I don't think you have to do anything there yourself. When you want to update the xml node after you made a change to an SPObject, just call the modified SPObject's updateRepr method. 3) Yes, I think so. The SPObject will stay, not as a struct but as a real class ;) . For the moment you'll have to get into creating a derived GObject "class". This shouldn't matter for understanding, though, I just converted the tree to "real" c++ classes. SPObject is the base class for all tree nodes. As you can see in the first pdf, every svg element has got one counterpart of the right class in the object tree. Whenever a change is made to an xml node, it informs the tree node belonging to him by calling for example onUpdate(). The tree node then updates its internal state. Whenever possible, one should work on the tree nodes and leave the xml nodes alone. You'll find lots of information on this in the inkscape wiki, e. g. "Changes in the XML tree are automatically propagated to the object tree via observers, but not the other way around-a function called updateRepr() must be explicitly called." As the rdf information is not a drawable object (-> SPItem subclasses), it should probably derive directly from SPObject. Maybe you could then add it as a member to SPMetadata. I'm not quite sure how to handle that best either. We should wait for some more opinions. or just try it out :) . [CAD] Status report

Hi, the last few days I dug myself into connector-context.cpp, making that thing compatible with the routing changes I did last week. So far, this has proven quite a task and I am not done yet. A snapshot of the current changes (not yet compiling since I'm midways in it) can be found on launchpad[0]. The main missing parts (apart from actually connecting everything back together after ripping it apart) are fitting g_signal and sigc++ together and getting all the rainbow-colored curves right. Handling missing point attribute in input SVG

Hello, Since it is my first post here, I would like to introduce myself. I'm CS student interested in FLOSS software and C++ development. I would like to contribute to Inkscape to raise my programming skills and do something good this year. I've begun by solving bug #1202753. For polygon elements in input file, that have empty or no "points" attribute SPShape::curve field is NULL. According to comment in sp-polygon.cpp:125 this should not be the case. When points="", sp_polygon_set does not initialize SPShape::curve. Comment in sp-polygon.cpp:169 refers to W3C note: http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/implnote.html#ErrorProcessing. Hi there, I have not been in for quite a while, but now I've got some time to spend on inkscape again! :) I just looked at this RDF thing and I'm wondering whether it should rather derive from SPObject than being so "separated"? I mean, one document has one metadata node and that should have exactly one rdf node in it, shouldn't it? Currently, RDF nodes do not have any counterpart in the object tree... Making a Windows binary

Dear Inkscape developers, I am working on a variant of Inkscape (well, "fork" but with no hostile intent towards such a great project) and while it runs and compiles just file on my Linux box, I haven't managed to make a Windows binary. I tried the native build on Win32 route but `pygobject` is needed (`pygobject.h not found`) for this particular variant. Basically, I think if I just add `pygobject` to the `devlibs`, everything will work out fine but I have no idea how to do this and I was hoping to get a quick answer from one of you since you already know your way around the codebase. If its something easy, feel free to skip the rest of this message which contains details of what I tried. I don't know the first thing about adding the needed paths for cross-compiling with `i586-mingw32msvc-g++` so I failed pretty quickly there (setting environment variables such as CXX worked fine but `make` then failed to find `libpng`). So I tried building on a (shared) Windows machine using MinGW. `buildtool.cpp` compiled fine (with a warning) and running it started the build process with no apparent problem (it didn't recognize the -j flag though) until it didn't find `pygobject.h`, which is obviously missing. I then installed Python and pygobject (using the PyGTK all in one bundle) but that didn't help (pygobject.h is missing), probably because those are runtime libraries with no header files. The entire goal of making such a build is so that I can get some testers. So I'm also happy to hear other options. (I haven't tried a Mac build yet since I don't have access to such a machine to test the output binary.) Thanks for your time (both in making Inkscape what it is and maybe answering my question).

Hello, I started off with the final coding sub-phase for the mid-term yesterday. The whole ColorSelector class and the ColorWheelSelector class and their inheritance is confusing me. I need to get the ColorWheelSelector to access the GimpColorWheel member _wheel of ColorWheelSelector. How do I get hold of that object ? Removal of assumed dead code, tips and trix, workflow and testing(?)

While working on the metadata enhancements I've realised that there are quite a few lines of dead code. Even the entire file of document-metadata.cpp|h seems to be left overs from 0.48 when Document Metadata was in its own window (now within document properties). With limited testing going on (or perhaps just me missing out on it?) what is the best practice to remove as much dead code as possible and nothing more without breaking stuff? ### On a more specific problem I've just tested to remove src/ui/dialog/document-metadata.cpp|h from Makefile_insert and done a clean build though I ended up with a compilation error that I've a hard time understanding. First of all I think that the DocumentMetadata is instantiated somewhere though the error message points to panel-dialog.h which is a template and to "/panel/home-dialog.h" which is a file I don't think exists in the source. Paned vs (H|V)Paned and adding it to metadata-properties, namespace error?

So working on implementing my mockup sent to the mailing list concerning more advanced metadata editing into Inkscape now. Though I've hit an error I can't understand, any help is appreciated. ### My problem The problem I have is that I can add new VBox and ScrolledWindow without problem to document-properties.cpp|h and compile it. When I try to add Gtk::Paned or Gtk::HPaned I get the following errors. error: ‘Paned’ in namespace ‘Gtk’ does not name a type error: ‘HPaned’ in namespace ‘Gtk’ does not name a type I've tried to add it in a mockup outside of Inkscape and it works. Inkscape Website problems and how to help

Hi ! Today I noticed a problem with the new staging.inkscape.org page. In the "overview" tab the about and download buttons doesn't fit in the same row. I checked it using Firefox 22 and Chromium 28.0.1500.52 both in Ubuntu Studio with the same problem. Looking a little bit closer I noticed there is a 100px margin in the css class : #front-banner-overview.buttons-right #front-banner-read-more { margin-left: 100px; } Reducing that margin to 90px ( for instance, and to let some space between the buttons ) should solve the problem. There is another problem with the news pages. It seems to complain about an error with Django 1.5 but no clue about how Django works at all... Also noticed a problem with the drop-down language menu. If you don't move the mouse fast enough the drop-down closes before reaching it. The problem seems to be the top margin in the drop menu. In that space the mouse is not being detected as being in the drop-menu element. I would solve it adding a height fixed empty div inside the drop-menu with white background so it looks the same but not sure if a good solution. I would like to help solving this problems. Design Approach for Directory-Level Extensions?

Hi, I'm seeking advice related to Inkscape Bug #1069248: Feature Request: Add 'Export to hOCR' in Save Dialog https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1069248 I've published a draft implementation of the extension (see comments) and am currently working on the next step, which is to say the ability to create multi-page PDFs from directories of hOCR html files and corresponding images. I have a standalone, draft version of this script based loosely on HocrConverter ( github.com/jbrinley/HocrConverter ); it's functionality I'd like to develop into a second Inkscape extension, if possible. So, two questions: 1) what steps are necessary to include the 'Export as hOCR' extension in Inkscape upstream? and 2) the 'next step' extension ("Create Multi-Page PDF from hOCR HTML Files" or similar): what would be the best way to integrate this into Inkscape? Most (all?) Inkscape exports/effects/operations operate on single documents, so it's a little different in scope. == An alternative method to create text-searchable PDFs within Inkscape is to open an image, create text boxes with opacity >= 0.4% (tested with Evince 3.4.0), then export as PDF using the current extension of the same name. Downsides to this approach are that the text is slightly visible and the loss of structured metadata (i.e., hOCR) which is extensible to other applications (e.g., DjVu, moz-hocr-editor) Sincerely, George

Unit testing

Hi guys, First off, I was wondering how many people out there have been running the unit tests along with builds. Secondly, the system we have now probably is in need of serious updating. Some of the test cases themselves aren't passing correctly, but the framework is also outdated. So does anyone have preferences in this area? Is there some framework we should consider other than Boost Test and Google Test. Or has it not been an issue for others and I should just go ahead and update to whatever keeps things working? Only GimpWheel Mode

In my attempts to operate in the mode when the wheel is being used: I made the following changes (the diff file) - added a 'gboolean _isWheel' to struct ColorSelector - added a function (public) void set_isWheel {_isWheel = TRUE } - added a function (public) gboolean get_isWheel { return _isWheel; } -added a function to paint-selector.cpp 'gboolean isWheel' which returns the _isWheel attribute of its selector. Unfortunately, the value does not stick to TRUE. QuesA: Is this approach wrong ? Is there any intrinsic method by which I can get the information that the Wheel is active ? Hello all, I have successfully implemented the code that enables dragging of the recolor nodes. Right now, any node you drag shall change the color of the entire selection. Hello all, I am unable to narrow down to the mode when the Wheel is active. (in the code) I have been digging through: sp-color-notebook.h/cpp sp-color-selector.h/cpp sp-color-wheel-selector.h/cpp sp-color-scales.h/cpp I also tried using the SP_IS_COLOR_WHEEL_SELECTOR(o) but I couldn't figure out how to design the final function call that takes as the argument, the list of selected objects when the wheel is actively being used (in the sp-color-notebook) and then changes the colors of the individual objects. This is what is holding me back: Where to put the function ? As a member of ColorSelector ? ColorWheelSelector ? or PaintSelector ? 'path' attribute in mesh branch

Hi Tav et al., I noticed that the 'path' attribute was added for meshes in r11406 [1] but it was not listed as being "supported" in attributes.test.h. I wanted to check whether it's safe for me to just change its status to "supported" in the test because it's part of an experimental feature. If we don't do this, the unit test faiils. One possible issue is that the 'path' attribute is listed as only applying to the 'animateMotion' element, while meshes aren't part of the formal SVG standard [2]. Am I reading too much into the meaning of "supported" here? Have I got the wrong end of the stick entirely?! Regression in rev. 12399

Hi Alvin, After updating to the latest Inkscape trunk, I've come across a regression - boolean operations on paths no longer work correctly. It appears that revision 12399 (Shape calculations - do not quantize the coordinates) is the culprit. I believe this commit attempts to fix the issue of path coordinates being rounded (and hence losing precision) - however, it looks like the boolean operation algorithms rely on this rounding to work correctly, and now fail with certain path data. I've attached an example of an SVG file with two paths. If you "select all" and then perform a "Path/Difference" operation, it produces the expected result in 12398. If you perform these steps in 12399, both paths disappear. (If the attached file gets stripped out for some reason, it's also available at https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3442233/boolean_regression.svg). I can understand how this error went unnoticed in simple tests - I tried drawing a couple of rects and doing a "difference" operation and it worked fine. Must be dependent on the exact shape of the path, perhaps my example file contains coordinates that give the difference algorithm some headaches due to floating-point precision issues (numbers being squared etc) that the coordinate rounding hides. I guess the best option for now would be for someone to back out revision 12399. Alvin, hopefully my example SVG will allow you to find the source of the bug! Best, Eric

Inkscape logo on the wiki

The wiki still has the extremely old and ugly logo instead of the Tango one. (The new one is attached.) Does anyone know who has or can give access to the Mediawiki server, so that the logo may be finally changed? Hi! I'd like to ask, if any one of you have any ideas how should be some additional data inside .svg files kept to enable easy translation? I mean info about the template (name, description etc) and probably, later on, some field names for procedural templates. Is there any recommended mechanism for translation of this data or should I think of something new? Another related question: is adding template info into metadata element ok or should I add a new one? Move Align to Selection

I've been looking at the align-and-distribute code and want to clear it up for use with my new functionality. My idea is to move the core function into selection like this: Selection::align(Geom::OptRect bbox, AlignSide align, bool as_group); That way align-and-distribute can specify the bbox from all it's options and other functions can align selections. It should reduce repetition and allow my code to call more directly into the effective code without navigating the ui specific code. I'd like your thoughts before I spend some time on this refactor. [Metadata GUI] Discussion about improvements

As some of you know I'm working on improving attribution and license features in Inkscape. I've the basic functionality for the backend (modifications in the XML structure) done and have focused on learning Gtkmm the last week. I wanted to show a mockup with Gtk but I was not able to finish it today so I made a drawing of how I want it to be so the discussion can get started. Any suggestions are welcome. ### Current functionality Metadata GUI consist of two "pages" in the document properties tab/notebook view, "Metadata" and "License". ### Limitations Only one entry can be modified from the GUI. With addition of extra metadata elements as child elements for different SVG-elements there must be a way to modify multiple metadata tags. ### Goals Main goal is to give the user an overview of all the metadata included in the document open i Inkscape. ### Discussion In the attached image I've the basic structure on how I envision this GUI could look like. To the left a list view of all metadata elements available, similiar to the XML editor. The right pane include all the settings [1]. The right pane has at the top a preview "image" of the part affected with the current license/attribution information. So in the image I have made a collage of a "car" and a "sun". In the image I've selected the metadata element for the car so only the car is visible in this preview image. This makes it easier for the user to understand which part of an image is affected by the current attribution and license information. As this GUI is very heavy on forms it's hard to copy and paste the information between different objects and could be very cumbersome. Therefore I have added the two options "Copy" and "Append/Paste". This would copy the entire object's metadata to the clipboard and be available to append/paste in another object (instead of copy-pasting ~15 different fields one at a time). License information can be moved to a dropdown/EntryCompletion option instead of a separate notebook tab. (License would also need one Entry field for the URI that is not in the image). Any comments, ideas or thoughts about this are appreciated. [1] In the image I've only drawn "title" and "Creator" but the real thing would include all options available now from the "Metadata" and "License" tabs. Regards -- Christoffer Holmstedt

Hello , This is regarding using the functions in style.h to change the fill color of the object currently selected on canvas. Could you please gimme a reference to how to use these functions in the right way ? What should be the way if I need to change a specific property of the style of the object ? Request for Animation Editor development [with funding]

Inkscape Window Size won't stick

Recently (I'm using an updated development version) I noticed that Inkscape doesn't seem to be able to remember the last window geometry. Well, it does, initially, when I open a document - but a second later the window size changes to a size of 1920X768. Why that size? I don't know, but I have a two monitor setup, both 1280X1024, so it might be 75% of desktop size. I am using the latest dev build on Window 7 64bit. I am not seeing the problem with the stable version. Does anyone have some insight on what might cause this?

[Recolor] Week #2 Progress

Hello, There hasn't been any coding this week. It has been mostly a brainstorming session where I have been looking at ways to achieve the purpose of the tool without interfering with other tools' functioning. The approach of enabling the paint-selector object to color 'active' objects from the selection will spiral into disaster as pointed out by Krzysztof. Now, I plan to directly access the SPDesktop object (again suggested by Krzysztof) and be working with Inkscape :: Selection . There are a few design issues that promptly come to mind which will be discussed shortly. + Firstly, as a followup to my previous question: "How to extract the fill information using the getStyleProperty ( ... ) function" - Is there any other method I can extract the style information ? I see recurring code of the form where a css object is created and the particular property is set using *sp_desktop_get_style(). *Will this be of any use ? I need to fetch the 'fill' property of the style of the object. + Problem of how to know from which objects I can access SPDekstop and related functions. And for the matter, Inkscape::Selection and realted functions too. + I intend to add a structure definition in gimpcolorwheel.c going as: struct WheelColorMarker { gchar id[6]; //the id is always 6 characters long (is thsi correct ?) gchar fill[7]; //#rrggbb in hex } I will use a dynamic array of this to fetch the id and color of the objects selected on the canvas and paint the color wheel with their respective markers. I will need access to functions which can create color into rgb triad of gdouble from the hex code of fill. +Last and the most nerve wracking question: Where do I add the functions that actually will change the colors ? in paint-selector.cpp ? If yes, how do I get access to the selected objects from that class ? Also, I remember discussing this on the mailing list, that if I change the attribute in the XML editor, it automatically gets reflected on the canvas ? Just want to confirm that if I use XML to change the solid colors of the objects then will they reflect on the canvas or not ? Which container used for path nodes?

I'm not sure where in the source tree to look for this, so I'll ask this here. What container does Inkscape use to store the nodes of its paths? I mean, a drawing program would often use (in STL terminology) push_back, pop_back, insert and erase. (I don't think push_front would often be needed.) The contained value type would probably contain a few flags in addition to the x,y coordinates. So I'm curious what container you people chose to cater to these requirements. [Recolor] GSoc 2013: Week 2 Brickwall

Hello, As a follow-up to my first week, I have been digging into numerous source files to get a hold to the functionality that handles coloring objects selected on the canvas ( desktop ) . The file paint-selector.cpp is a generic file which handles the different color selectors like the color-wheel selector( sp-color-wheel-selector.cpp ) which is our attention right now. Now, the FillNStroke class (fill-style.cpp) puts the Paint Selector in the appropriate mode. The Paint Selector then passes control to the color selector which repaints the object on the canvas which is selected. There is just one problem with respect to the demands of my project : The color selector will apply changes to ALL objects currently in the SELECTION list. What I need is that a group of objects are selected, with the ONLY ONE object selected or atleast the color selector thinks so ? Any ideas on how I actually create such pseudo-selection criteria ? I have an approach in mind that goes like this: I can include an extra Paint Selector mode by the name of MODE_RECOLOR and in that mode the desktop handles the selection differently that it maintains a list of background selections and an ACTIVE selection. The ACTIVE selection is what the color selector sees. When I toggle the selection, the appropriate object becomes the ACTIVE SELECTION. There must be many experienced developers here who know the in and outs of the coloring mechanism. Can you guys suggest a better solution/ go-ahead whether my proposed way is possible/ an easier method ? Without a policy on which extensions and how a package of non-core extensions might work. It's worth considering because it allows c). c) Should extensions be committed to trunk. This is code layout. Extensions don't need to be compiled but are packaged and might be better splitting out if we could benefit from smarter reviews from python programmers who might be intimidated by the inkscape codebase at the moment. Testing for inkscape can be done in situ, but testing extensions involves extra steps which could be handled with tools in such a specialised branch. It would be possible for instance to have extensions live in an inkscape-extensions project or branch and for packages to be curated. Like 'ink-generator' but with a "Get More Extensions..." link at the bottom of the Extensions menu that either links to a website page with the packages for non-package-managed platforms, or loaded the right os package list for managed platforms. The additional benefit would be the separation of versions. Extension packages could be fixed, released and integrated at a different speed to the glacial inkscape release process. I'd be interested in hearing from other developers about their thoughts since I can understand that having thousands of highly specialised extensions in trunk might not be desirable but splitting them out might be heretical. There are no major ui changes since last published mockup. I still need to decide which part of the dialog will be scrolled (and how to do it) and how to retrieve templates info from the svg file. You can also see an empty entry in the templates list. Hi! What has been done? Real Inkscape templates are loaded by the dialog. Using the dialog actually creates new document from the given template . Dialog has been added as a menu item to the file menu. Some compiling problems, which appeared after adding the dialog to the project, have been solved What's coming? Retrieving data from the templates file and showing them in the widget. Searching logic. When? According to the proposals timeline it should be ready on Monday. It's very possible that I will do it in time. So, the first big part (static templates) is quiet quickly coming to the end (of course there are few things left to be done). If anyone of you, have some additional suggestions / expectations to the next part (procedural templates), please, write about them as soon as possible so I could take them into account while designing details. Automating an Inkscape workflow

Hi all, This is my first post to the Inkscape developer list, so - hello! I've been using Inkscape for various server-side operations as part of a project I'm currently working on, and I believe I've run into the limits of the existing scripting / extensions capability. However, I'll describe my requirements, problem, current solution, and proposed improvements, and see what you think. The requirements: I wish to perform "deep subtraction" of one pre-defined path (let's call it P) from an SVG - that is, to perform a Boolean difference operation against each path within the SVG (let's call them S1, S2, ... Sn) such that a 'hole' (in the shape of my path) is punched through all of the SVG layers. The problem: Inkscape Boolean difference operations operate on pairs of paths, such that the uppermost of the two paths is subtracted from the lower path. The operation may only be performed on selections of two paths (i.e. you can't select 10 paths and have the uppermost path be subtracted from all of the lower 9 simultaneously). My current solution: The obvious approach is to simply perform the Boolean operation once for each path in the SVG, cloning the path P to allow it to be subtracted again each time. That is: Create P Perform S1 - P Create P Perform S2 - P ... Create P Perform Sn - P This results in every path in the SVG having P subtracted, which is exactly what I want. To implement the "Create P" operation, I've written a Python extension that inserts a <path> element into the document (i.e. I can create P by simply executing this extension script within Inkscape). To perform a difference operation, I can use the (somewhat maligned?) command line interface with --select <id of S1> --select <id of P> --verb SelectionDiff and I can automatically call my "create P" extension with --verb <my.extension.name.noprefs>. I therefore just have to ensure all paths in the source SVG have IDs, extract these IDs, and then chain a big long command line together to perform all the creation, selection, and Boolean subtractions. I accomplish the ID extraction with my own Python script (running independently from Inkscape, simply using normal XML parsing code) and get that script to concoct a long string of command-line arguments. The obvious problem here is that for files with more than a few IDs, I run into the command-line argument length limit. I have hacked around this by editing Inkscape's main.cpp file and allowing it to take --select / --verb arguments from a text file instead (note that --shell does not do the same thing - it still requires all commands to be on one shell-line, and the line length has a limit). Clearly this is not particularly clever, although it does work - it means I have my own special build of Inkscape and it uses an extremely clunky "scripting" mechanism. The proposed improvements: I have looked at alternative solutions and have come up with the following: - I could edit the C++ code for Boolean operations such that the difference operation works on more than one path. However this is very specific to my problem, and it's likely that I'll want to perform other Inkscape automation tasks in future that don't use the Boolean ops. - There appeared to be some DBus API at one point but it seems to have fizzled out ( http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.graphics.inkscape.devel/40384 was a useful discussion) - and DBus isn't really ideal for this kind of scripting anyway. - Allow further scripting of Inkscape through a Python API - this is my preferred solution, and also, it seems, several other peoples'. The major drawback is that this is likely to be more coding work. However, I have a suggestion that will solve my immediate problem and potentially be useful to others. If I wrote a Python API that allowed Inkscape extension scripts to execute Inkscape verbs and selections, then I could perform all of the necessary operations inside a single Python extension. I could then run the extension from the command line in the usual way (--verb my.extension.name.noprefs). Initially this might take the form of an extra couple of functions on the Python inkex.Effect object: - do_verb(verb_name) - select_ids(id_list) Then any Inkscape Effect extensions can execute verbs and modify selections as they see fit. Does this sound like a good plan? Any other input? I'm happy to write the code for this if you think it would be generally useful, it seems a bit limiting at the moment that effects essentially have to modify the raw XML document themselves to get any useful work done. If the "do_verb" function was modified to take an argument list (along with the appropriate C++ functions), then it would allow for even richer GUI-free interaction (e.g. automation of "Save As" operations and so on). As every week's update, I'm attaching some samples for fast tracking of the project. The next steps are: - Extract the spline curves from the graph (it should be this week, but I'll have to delay) - Optimize the curve I'll do a presentation about my "hobby project" on FISL and I'll need this week to prepare the surprise examples, the slides and so on. Review Request: Selection Transform Refactor

Hey Inkscape Devs, I need some reviews of my new branch available here: lp:~doctormo/inkscape/seltrans-refactor It's a refactoring of the selection transformation code. Not a complete rewrite, but a considerable change. The aims of these changes are: * To merge center exceptions, making them more natural * Reduce line count by 80 lines, 244 lines removed 164 lines added * Reduce class to non-class to class calling * Identifiable handle type, remove assumptive code that uses other properties to guess what kind of handle it is. I have a feature I'm planning to add in and this refactoring will help with that. LPE: Scaling Skeletons

While investigating bug 616198, I'm showing a weird crash at live_effects/lpe-bendpath.cpp:108 the uskeleton.cuts variable is either not set or not setup correctly and borks. I couldn't work out exactly what to do since it's not anything I can see. I'd love to know what's going wrong with this bug to improve my understanding of C++. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Object-oriented extension development with play-SVG

Hello developers, I'm writing to announce the recent re-release of play-svg, a set of python libraries aimed at generative and geometry-based coding for creating SVG files: https://github.com/cosmo-guffa/play-svg, with some minimal documention here: http://cosmo-guffa.github.io/play-svg/ . It includes some Inkscape extensions for plotting various geometric objects as well as many more scripts demonstrating its use. Currently the extensions are undocumented, though most of them are pretty self-explanatory in live preview mode. My project went defunct in 2009 when the pyxml libraries got canned. I recently decided to dust the project off and get it back up and running. I noticed the Inkscape community implemented the use of lxml and so I decided to do so as well. I'm realizing that having to install the libraries before using the extensions is an impediment to their use. However, I think that they could serve as a valuable resource for extension developers who want to strip out a lot of the lower-level coding that goes on. Particularly, I've implemented object-oriented creation of paths with some useful helper functions and created an object-oriented interface to creating all svg elements. What I'm wondering is, would it benefit the project to include play-svg and its extensions in Inkscape ? If so, how could they best integrate ? I would like to preserve the ability to import the libraries in stand-alone scripts for those who have already installed Inkscape. What could I do for the project to make it as high-calibre as the Inkscape software itself ? Your feedback would be greatly appreciated :) Sincerely, ~Cosmo

Tentative patch for downscaling in Cairo

Hello I had a look at how complex would it be to add correct downscaling to Cairo now that Pixman supports convolution filters. It turns out it this is rather easy. Here is an initial, minimal attempt. It uses convolution filters only if the image is being downscaled by more than half a pixel in at least one dimension. Some discussion: 1. The sampling and reconstruction kernels are picked in a way that gives comparable quality when upscaling and downscaling. I paired box sampling with bilinear reconstruction and impulse (point) sampling with box reconstruction. This gives the expected result for NEAREST filter. BEST filter uses Lanczos3 for both kernels. 2. Subsampling bits are always set to 1, since this doesn't seem to affect quality at all. 3. I am not sure whether this code works correctly for matrices with a skew component. It should be OK for any combination of scale, rotation and translation. 4. This patch causes new failures in the test suite: - recording-surface*: possibly an effect of improved quality. - surface-pattern-scale-down*, surface-pattern-big-scale-down: the reference images should be updated. - pthread-same-source: I have no idea why this is failing, since this test shouldn't even trigger the new code. - large-source-roi: this test attempts to downscale an image which is 30000 pixels wide down to 7 pixels. The filter parameters seem to be created correctly, but they might trigger an overflow somewhere in the convolution code; the output rectangle is white instead of red, as if nothing was drawn. - device-offset-scale: there are subtle differences which look like convolution-related smoothing; I'm not sure whether this is OK or not. Note that master currently fails many more tests, I only listed new failures cause by this patch. Regards, Krzysztof Kosiński

Workflow with bazaar and the append-only trunk (used to git)

So hopefully I will have access to trunk in a couple of days and before committing directly to trunk I want to confirm that I've understood the workflow with bazaar correctly so I don't mess anything up and make it as easy as possible for me to develop. I use Ubuntu and work from the terminal. I've read the http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Working_with_Bazaarpage a couple of times trying to figure out exactly what workflow would suit me. The SVN style goes away directly (I want to do everything locally first and push only when I say so). The git-style branches with bazaar seems somehow forced into bazaar and not very appealing to me. I'm left with the branching and pushing...and I can live with the little longer time it takes to branch the big codebase. My questions: 1) The big "gotcha" is that I shouldn't merge trunk into my feature branch and then push back to trunk, is this correct? 2) If I develop a new feature in a separate branch is the following workflow a correct way to get it into trunk? cd trunk bzr pull (get the most reason trunk first) bzr merge ../myproject bzr commit -m "Added myproject" bzr push Regards -- Christoffer Holmstedt

Hello devs, I spent the first week researching requisite stuff (more or less) so I am not counting that as the first week. [Making 24th June as the start point]. As planned in the Timeline, I have successfully rewritten the colorwheel code and modified it to a new GUI very similar to that of Adobe Kuler's Editing GUI. Here's a snapshot. What it looked like earlier: [image: Inline image 2] What it looks like now: [image: Inline image 3] Notice the following changes: 1. ) The saturation is now handled by the distance of the node (the hollow circle on the wheel) from the centre. As we move closer to the centre, we get less saturation. 2.) The brightness value is handled by a slider below the Alpha Slider. It automatically paints the Alpha bar accordingly. 3.) Clicking on a new spot on the wheel, moves the node there and repaints the selected object accordingly. The next stage through this week will be adding functionality that if more than one objects on the canvas are selected, the wheel is painted with its respective nodes in the correct color areas. What shall ensue will be adding a inner class/data members of nodes to the color wheel with their appropriate events (dragging, selection, deselction, main_node etc). I am currently working on retrieving the objects selected on the canvas. Can someone help me with information on how to use getStyleProperty(gchar const *key, gchar const *def) {...} ? I basically need to check if the style is solid fill and then retrieve the color. I tried these variants: 1.) getStyleProperty("fill","1") = gibes me entire style field in XML editor except the 'fill' keyword written. 2) getStyleProperty("color",NULL) : (null) is returned.
