How's this list: svg (all variations could be mentioned in one spot) pdf xaml (is this available in any windows installation?) png bmp jpg tiff ps and eps dxf (seems to be pretty commonly used with cutters) xcf (gimp native format, definitely important) I think the rest are uncommon enough as to be incidental, and most of these are, I believe, available with a standard installation. We'll just have to weed out those that aren't. Thoughts? JF

Hi Everyone, I've been trying to finish off the FM chapter on working with files, I want to indicate in the manual which formats Inkscape can load and which one it can save. After my last email to the list I started looking at the options on the open and save dialogs. I found some interesting results. some file types I could load or save in my Ubuntu Linux version of Inkscape but not in the Windows version. There was one file type mentioned in the manual that I couldn't find in either the linux or windows version of inkscape (.dia), and there were several file types that could be opened or saved in either the linux or windows version of inkscape, but weren't mentioned in the manual. I'll add the last group to the manual, but what I would like to know concerns the other groups. 1) is there a plug-in that is needed for the .dia file type? 2) why are some formats only able to be saved or opened in the linux version of Inkscape? Are there certain components or plug-ins that are installed with the linux version that aren't with the windows version. I can send through a list of the file types in particular if that helps. Hi all, I've just been working on the FM Inkscape manual (the chapter on working with files), and under the Save Dialog section where there is talk about file formats that can be used, I noticed that alot of them weren't available on the dropdown list in the save file dialog. I was just wondering why is that? as it could be quite confusing especially if after reading the manual you wanted to save a drawing as an illustrator SVG so it could be edited in Adobe Illustrator, but when you go to the actual save dialog in Inkscape there isn't an option for Illustrator SVG. Also I've observed that when a 'NOTE' has been added to a chapter sometimes they are just plain text on a new paragraph while other times they have had a border around the paragraph with a pale pink background. I'm quite happy to give all notes a border and background but I guess we need to set a standard so that we don't have mixed uses and inconsistencies throughout the document. Another thing I've seen is a number of comments specifically aimed at Linux users and I think having a set style for any OS specific content would be a good Idea. I hope this doesn't sound like a moan because it's not, but while editing the manual I have noticed a number of inconsistencies whose use hasen't been mentioned in the Writing Guidlines so Before changing all the formatting throughout the document I thought it would be a good idea to establish guidlines for these situations. And it would be great if anyone else has noticed any other situations where we need to establish style guidlines that they mention it and we can establish consistent styles for each of these situations. Hallo everyone I think the file formats in the save dialog depends on what programs you have on your system. My guess is that Inkcscape check if those programs are available and when you save it to that format, Inkscape will use like libraries from that program to save it into that format. If this is so, we must put a note in the "Working with files" chapter. I have a little problem: I use Ubuntu for all my work, but when I want to use the Internet, I have to reboot into my small Windows installation. I use a nokia 5200 and Bluetooth to make an Internet connection. I've tried everything but I can't get this connection to work on Ubuntu. If someone can help me, please let me know. When you translate a manual on Floss manuals, can you change the chapter's title or does it just stays like the original english one? Regards -- Faith is to believe what you can't see. Hi This is the first time i post to this list. I've been hanging on the #inkscape channel in irc few weeks with nick mapky. Though I think i have not said much anything in there, but maybe someone has noticed me. I started to wonder what documents would be most urgently need translations to finnish language. I might do some translating. I was looking inkscape codebase some time ago, but it seemed to be over my head, so i was thinking maybe i could contribute in some other ways to the project. I really like inkscape, all though the text tool could be more versatile.
