Strange fill/stroke settings in freehand tools after fresh install

Hi, after freshly installing Inkscape (rev. 21524), the Pen/Pencil tools produce lines which are filled black but don't have any stroke. This is very counterintuitive. The small info field in the toolbar (on the right hand side) displays "Fill: None, Stroke: Black (000000/1)" (these are indeed the values specified in preferences-skeleton.h for the freehand tools). However, both in the Fill & Stroke dialog and in the Preferences it says: "Fill: Unset, Stroke: Unset", and this probably explains the strange appearance of the drawn lines. What's happening here? Why are the values in preferences-skeleton.h not correctly taken into account? I think this should definitely be fixed before 0.47. Max

Hi, I haven't seen any bug hunt scores. Are they posted somewhere other than the developer's mailing list? I think having the scores on the developer's mailing list helps stimulate bug fixing as it makes the release more real. I can help with this if given a bit of guidance. I also am having a hard time keeping track of all the details of the release as most are buried in old emails. Hi, Navigating through bug/wishlist reports, I found this old one<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171993>that was declared invalid, but I'd like to discuss a little more. It's about clones behaviour in general. The 'svg' specification is very limiting with this respect, but I think there are svg compilant ways to get more freedom. What I dislike in inkscape/pure svg clones: -color/style management: it's very difficult to have objects share shape but not color. The parent's color has to be set to 'undifined', hence looking black, which generally means you'll have to hide it (as for custom stroke width, dashes..., they require the svg editor!). Moreover, one might want to have some clones share the fill color but have custom stroke, and/or someother share the stroke color but not the fill.This is doable using intermediate clones, but definitely not handy. -transform management: create an object A, create a clone A' of it, put A' in a group G. Now select A and G and rotate them. A' is rotated twice!!! This is definitely non intuitive, and means you'd better move the parent object to a specific layer and never use it directly in your drawing if you don't want to bump into pretty bad situations. -more generally, making a difference between the parent and the clones will always induce unexpected or non intuitive effects. IMO, parent and clones should be prefectly symetric. One naive way to improve this would be to have our own "inkscape:clone" objects of course, and let them behave exactly the way we want. I'd like to suggest another intermediate option. I think svg clones are mainly disgned for "internal" use. My experience is that each time I had to use them, I indeed did end up putting the parent in a separate layer (at least away from the main drawing) and work with clones only. We could automate this process: When an object is cloned, not only the clone is created, but the parent is also moved to a special hidden layer (or in the defs, why not?, or simply hidden) and replaced by another clone. + all visible instance of the "thing" can be manipulated, grouped, transformed, uniformly. + it makes it possible to let the clone inherit only some style properties of the parent: at creation time, the parent's style would be moved to an "inkscape:default_clone_style" attribute, and the style itself would be set to undefined. Inkscape would compare clone's style to the "default_clone_style" to detect user modified properties, and maintain all style changes accordingly. +finally, it would be so nice to be able, whenever the user attempts to node-edit a clone, hide the clone itself, replace it by a temporary copy of the parent, and transfer the modifications to the parent. Of course, there are issues: in particular, the parent may appear as a reference anywhere else in the document. Changing it's style to undifined might have unexpected results. One solution would be to use an intermediate object: an inkscape special object that would be a linked copy of the parent, but have the style attribute set to undefined, and have the clones point to this linked copy. Ok, this might sound too complex. This can be declined in softer versions: for instance, instead of making this automatic and transparent to the user, we could at least offer the possibility *at least offer the user the possibility to automatically move the parent to a separate layer *when the user attempts to set the style of a clone when it does not make sens, suggest either setting the style of the parent or setting the parent's style to undefined and transfer the actual style to all existing clones. svg transformations help

Hi to all, while working on a lightweight svg editor implemented as firefox extension I ran into problem and now need some help to understand the fundamentals of nested svg transformations. The basic matrix concatenations work well but when I start to rotate an element which already has a skew transform applied I got it working well only if I prepend the rotation matrix to the transform... so far good but rotate an element which resides inside of a group things get more complicated. I tried with inkscape and found it will apply a matrix and also change the width and height and even the stroke-width of the rect I used for testing like: <g transform="translate(100,100) skewY(10) skewX(25)" id="g15"> <rect id="skewPath23" x="-222.08493" y="237.81218" onclick="incrementTransform(this)" width="138.00793" height="101.14107" transform="matrix(0.8490597,-0.5282969,0.9708449,0.2397086,0,0)" style="fill:#ff0000;fill-opacity:0.5;stroke:#330000;stroke-width:0.35443538" /> </g> works well but how to understand? Regressions(?) in rendering tests

For some reason the rendering test bugs/bug181995.svg now gives a blur that is wider than it is tall (which is not the intended effect). The normal blur test still passes though, so it might have something to do with transforms. I filed a bug at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/395197 In addition livepatheffect/ruler.svg suddenly renders differently (in a relatively subtle way), someone who knows what the intended effect is should have a look to see what's best (I haven't filed a bug). JavaFX support for Inkscape?

Hi Inkscape developers. I'd like to see if there is anyone interested in working on a JavaFX plugin for Inkscape. Please let me introduce myself. I'm Josh Marinacci from the JavaFX engineering team at Sun. JavaFX is our new platform for graphic intensive applications that runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux (as well as phones and TVs in the future). Recently there have been threads on a few mailing lists asking for JavaFX support in Inkscape so I thought I'd see if there was anyone in the developer community interested in creating such a plugin. Let me explain what this means. Today we have something called the JavaFX Production Suite, which is a set of plugins for Photoshop and Illustrator. They let you export graphics from those tools and then integrate them in an app you are building, adding animation and event handlers directly to the graphics. I put together a screencast to show you how it works in Photoshop: http://blip.tv/file/2288262 We simply don't have the developer resources to create plugins for tools other than Photoshop and Illustrator, but we also don't want to leave open source and Linux designers out of the loop. We'd love to help some in the Inkscape community build such a plugin. We can provide technical support and specs, and answer questions. I think it would be pretty easy for an experienced Inkscape developer to build such an export plugin. The underlying .FXZ format is basically a zip file containing images and some text metadata similar to XML. It should be pretty easy to generate. It's my understanding that there was a previous effort to create an Inkscape plugin (Silviera Neto was working on it, I think). Is this plugin still under development? These are my humble suggestions: 1) when moving the guide (no modifiers) you always also move (and snap) the origin, that goes under the cursor, in 2D (so wherever you click you always grab the guide at its origin: why moving the guide keeping the origin at the original distance from the grab/snapping point?); this behaviour would be consistent (=intuitive) to what happens when you create a guide; 2) if shift is pressed when clicking, the guides always rotate (snapping to what's around or, if you press ctrl after the rotation is started, to absolute angles, i.e. always starting from 0, using the step specified in the preferences for when rotating objects); 3) if ctrl-shift is pressed when clicking, the origin moves constrained to the guide (snapping to what's around projected perpendicularly to the guide; if you want something different you can create a new guide and snap to the intersection, while creating a guide perpendicular to a given one is not always straightforward; this is a general consideration regarding snapping while constrained). 4a) the circle should appear when hovering on the guide (so whenever it becomes selected); or 4b) the circle should appear when you start moving the guide in 2D (so under the cursor), or when a modifier is pressed (but you must select the guide also, to avoid having all the origins of all guides in the drawing appear whenever you press a modifier, maybe for doing something else with another tool); Points 2) and 3) could be implemented as they are now (i.e. you get the two clicking on the guide at different distances from the origin) provided that the cursor and status bar indications change correctly to show the difference (now they don't). This would eliminate the ctrl-shift modifier. Now to be more precise again : admitting I work with the future corrected version of Inkscape, I select an object or a picture in my document, I click on a filter in one of the lists in a Filters submenu while the filters.svg file in Inkscape directory is the same than today. Will Inkscape new version add to the filter the instructions needed to display the filter like it displays in Inkscape today ? Sorry, I am a visual person and not a coder (if I could I would... but at the moment no time to go further in this direction I am afraid) and I try to understand the most clearly I can because I must evaluate which kind and amount of work will be needed to adapt the results of my work if necessary. Hi, all. Is there any kind of Inkscape regression files that we can use for testing new releases? I'm thinking about a collection of files that systematically incorporates certain kinds of path effects, patterns, color management testing and so on to make eyballing bugs easier. *If there is none, here's my suggestion*: For example, one file would be for testing the new "Path Effect Editor" and could have 10 sample paths which each is using one of the available effects. Beside each path, there's an bitmap to show what the path is supposed to look like which makes it very easy to compare the desired path effect to the actual effect. At the same time, these files would be kinda educational, since the instructions for producing each effect could be written on the canvas right next to the paths. *Here'**s the same type of files for Blender:* http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/ "Regression files are .blend examples showing systematically all features we test before doing a release. turbulence filters

Hi, Isn't our turbulence filter producing darker output than expected? The attached svg file is borrowed from the w3c test suite, and also contains the expected png output: our render looks draker. I bumped into this trying to use turbulence as a displacement map: the displacement always globaly shifts the image downward and to the right. This is because the avarage value in each turbulence output channel is not 128 but much darker. I think this is a bug... (maybe premuliplied alpha versus normal alpha color mode?) Am I wrong? jfb.

Tweak Tool Colour Jitter - feedback on variance

I've been playing with the Tweak Tool in an effort to create something sparkly, like a Disco Ball (but not really). I've given the array of objects some colour then used the Tweak tool to jitter the Luminance. The problem I have is that the jitter effect doesn't come close to covering the full spectrum of luminance values. So the result has a distinct lack of contrast and looks more matte than sparkly. With maximum pressure the range of jitter always pulls towards the middle of the spectrum and instead of getting a range of values between 0 and 255, I get a range between 90 and 150. I find this is true for saturation also. I then used the jitter tool with luminance and saturation modes. The result is pretty much the same for both groups with a relative small range of variance. I may not be thinking correctly about how this feature works. I imagined that greater pressure would create more variance in the spectrum. The last time this happened it was because the default location of the preference file had changed; has that happened again or do I need to start digging through the code? ICC on color picker

JonCruz, I've been looking at the dropper-context.cpp code. It deals with sRGB colors only. I think that we should be able to pick an ICC color using the color picker. But there are some issues here: 1) the color picker acquires the rendered sRGB image of the document (a NRPixBlock) and colects the color of a single pixel (or an average). These pixels can be the result of compositing various layers of semi-transparent objects. We will need to implement icc-color compositing on our own if we wish to pick an equivalent color in the transformed color space. 2) Colors can be altered by filters, which are calculated in sRGB. So, it wouldnt be possible to pick an equivalent ICC color even when we are trying to pick a color from a filtered object that has an icc color in its fill or stroke. 3) how to deal with compositing of mixed color spaces? I.e. how to mix sRGB with icc transformed colors? Or even... how to mix colors in two (or more) color profiles? This seems to be hard to solve... I'd like to know what's your (JonCruz and Inkscape devel team) opinion on that subject. Juca

Hi there! I'm a member of a national organization here in Colombia, which is promoting a candidate for next presidential elections. This org has got Groups in several Departaments, and each Group has got several commitees. I'm suggesting them to use a mailing list to enhance communications among commitees, Groups and the whole org. We'd like mailing lists like yours, with a single addres for every list (like your @lists.sourceforge.com) and one list for each commitee (like your inskcape-devel, inkscape-user, inskcape-translator...). I know your list is powered by Mailman, but I'm far from skilled at such. I need something free (we're lacking resources), easy and web based (I have no computer of mine, I work on Cyber-coffees). Could you please help? I really appreciate your opinions.

EAN-13 barcode generation success :-)

Hi all, Further to the recent bugfix on the generation of EAN-13 barcodes, used for book jackets and many other kinds of product packaging, I wanted to carry out some real-world tests. I printed a real ISBN for a forthcoming book in EAN-13 format on to a sheet of plain 80g/m2 copy paper using Inkscape and an ordinary HP Laserjet 3050 desktop laser printer. I then took the print to my local library, who scanned it for me using their hand-held barcode scanner on the borrowing desk. The library computer recognised the EAN-13 on the first swipe, and decoded it back to a ten-digit ISBN. I'd like to thank all the Inkscape developers for this killer plugin. Cheers! Daniel

icc-color on feflood filter

I have coded (in my gsoc2009_color branch) icc-color handling in the feFlood SVG Filter. There is no way to set an icc-color for the flood-color parameter in our current filters user interface. But it will properly color-transform an icc-color if it is declared in the SVG file. I have manually edited an SVG file in order to test it. JonCruz, I'd like to ask for your code review of svn revision 21632. Am I doing it right? Should I keep doing it in other portions of the code? Juca

Some insight into crash in EAN13 barcode generator

Hi all, I was excited to see the barcode generator plugin in Inkscape 0.46, finally I can make my own EAN-13 barcodes for book jacket designs :-) I ran into this bug though, while testing 64 Studio 3.0 beta 3, which is Ubuntu Hardy LTS based. The Inkscape package is the same binary as in Hardy. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/inkscape/+bug/334073 I think I found the cause, a bug in the plugin. If you select Barcode Type as EAN13 and enter 13 digits into the Barcode Data field, which is correct according to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Article_Number you get the error as shown in the Launchpad ticket. If you enter any number of digits other than 12 or 13, it warns: Can not encode '97819050823' into EAN13 Barcode, Size must be 12 numbers only No barcode was generated However if you enter the first 12 digits of an ISBN-13, Inkscape will generate a bogus EAN-13 barcode, which will probably not scan in book stores because it has the final checksum digit missing. I think there's been a mix-up between 12 digit UPC barcodes and 13 digit EAN-13 barcodes used for book ISBN's. Sorry if this is too obvious and you knew about the problem already. If anyone has a barcode scanner available, I would love to do some quality control testing on this feature, because once it's printed on the back of the book, it's too late to change :-) Cheers! Readability of user visible messages

Hi, It would be great if somebody for whom English is a native language could go through user visible messages and take care of those unclear of them. I'm specifically referring to live paths effects, which is full of things that are difficult to understand. For instance, Celtic Knot has two options: "add stroke width to interruption size" and "add other's stroke width to interruption size". And we still have a lot of places where it's not clear in what units of measure the function works. "Fuse nearby ends" in Pattern Along Path LPE is one of them. Varios SVG Filter primitives too... Would be great to have that sorted out before strings freeze. Alexandre

po files update and string freeze date

Hi, I was browsing the svn tree through the web (to get the last es.po file) and I saw that 14 hours ago there was an update to "inkscape.pot" but the last "make inkscape.pot && update_po_files.sh" was three weeks ago. Now, I know that this is done regularly to keep the po files merged but, as release date approaches maybe it would be a good idea to run the script more often (at least after every update of the main pot file). Also, the RoadMap here: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Roadmap has no dates but I remember having seen a roadmap with dates. Does that still exist? or was it my imagination? Hello, I've updated my split text extension! See more details in: http://nerdson.com/bin/split/ It doesn't split flowed texts. I couldn't put the splitted elements in the same position they were before (because of the way flowedText data is organized), so I decided to not support this type of element in the extension. I'd like to know if there's a way to get the X and Y of a flowed text. Apparently they are determined by the position of the flowing shape... I'd like you to test it and if possible, put it on 0.47. More Font Selection Fun

If a font (such as Helvetica - quite a common font) has a "Medium" weight then selecting this in the "Text and Font" dialog box correctly changes the preview text but as soon as one clicks on "apply" "medium" is changed to "bold" and the font set accordingly. For the record, the Undo History has been around since 0.45. If you're inclined to improve it, wait until afte SoC. Otherwise know, it's been around for a couple versions w/o any major issues. NEW: font family list usability

The usability of the font family drop-down list in the Text tool controls bar has been improved: it no longer steals focus, all keyboard shortcuts work as designed (Alt+X to access the family control, Alt+down to open the drop-down list, arrows to move in the list, Enter to set chosen font) and the completion feature works (start typing a family name and a pop-up list with possible completions appears). Remaining problems that may be fixed in the future versions: * The first opening of the drop-down list of family names may be slow if you have many fonts installed (the delay is Inkscape generating the previews for all fonts). * By default on Linux, the drop-down is shown as a menu (gray background, wide panel without horizontal scrolling) instead of a list (white background, narrow panel with horizontal scrolling). The menu style is inconvenient because of its excessive width. To fix this, find your ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file and inside the style that applies to all widgets, add GtkComboBox::appears-as-list = 1. For example: style "user-font" { font_name="DejaVu Sans 10" GtkComboBox::appears-as-list = 1 } widget_class "*" style "user-font" Windows version uses the list style by default. I should add that, after several days of tweaking this, starting from a patch by Felipe, I hate GTK more than ever. Its inconsistent behavior across platforms, poor configurability (can anyone please suggest how the list style can be set programmatically, not via an rc file? this style property is read-only in GTK!) and ambiguous documentation are really a shame. In the end I fixed everything except the above listed issues, using a few weird tricks but nothing really insane (standard GTK widgets only), and I think it should be good enough to release in 0.47. If and when someone comes up with a more advanced solution, it must be at least as good usability-wise as this one. I tested it on Linux with GTK 2.15.4 and on Windows XP. Hi, According to ChangeLog last July there was support for Windows clipboard introduced. However on Linux copy/paste of paths still doesn't work between instances and Inkscape doesn't seem to announce it sent something to clipboard for other apps as well. GIMP does support pasting SVG paths from clipboard, but ironically the only application that is supposed to do that in fact doesn't do it. Amusing, eh? :) So, what can we do? Alexandre

I was fixing the bug about the svg version attribute not always being written, and came across two issues. The first is minor, but the second is one for a bit of collaboration. First is that I found our default version we've been adding is "1.0". Thus we end up with <svg = "1.0", whereas it really needed to be updated to "1.1". That bit of code has not been touched since Mental first imported things, so I'm very sure it is just an oversight. The second is that we are still adding this to every file: sodipodi:version="0.32" Is it safe to remove that now? I'm pretty sure we don't need to keep compatibility with SodiPodi anymore. I'd like to be about to clean up our use of the "sodipodi" namespace altogether... but that is really a large and involved task and most likely not one for now.

multiple desktop use cases

Do you ever use multiple Inkscape windows simultaneously (or know people that do?) If so, how, and under what circumstances? I am working on an Inkscape scripting API through GSoC and am trying to decide how to abstract the desktop concept. I would like to do this for two reasons. One, if it is not at least partially hidden virtually every method would need a desktop argument, incresing complexity without much tradoff in terms of flexibility. Two, the concept is not one that I think script writers should need to worry about and the terminoligy only makes it more confusing for the uninitiated. Of course I'm not everyone and so I want to get opinions on how working with multiple desktops simultaniously is useful for people so I can figure out how much functionality to expose. When I have a draft layout of the API finished (soon) I will ask for more general feedback on use cases people feel are not supported. Thank you for your feedback, -Soren Berg

Using inkscape-21256 snapshot (because release version has bug causing core dump when attempting to change fill color as reported numerous times). src/display/nr-arena-shape.cpp has #include <fenv.h> But I don't see any use of floating-point definitions, FE* macros, or fe*() functions. I commented that line out and inkscape built fine. (Also some platforms don't have any fenv.h.) Also src/live_effects/lpe-dynastroke.cpp uses fmin and fmax. Some platforms don't have that. So I added to src/live_effects/lpe-dynastroke.cpp : #define fmin(a,b) ((a)<(b)?(a):(b)) #define fmax(a,b) ((a)>(b)?(a):(b)) Also work/inkscape-21256/src/display/nr-filter.cpp refers to fmax but it is commented out.

Hi, Could we possibly try to include two currently disabled LPEs into 0.47? I'm particularly talking about: 1. Mirror symmetrically, which resolves multiple times requested symmetric drawing mode 2. Booloops, which makes Spiro a lot more useful. For now I moved all entries for currently disabled LPEs and the LPE tool itself from POTFILES.in to a newly created POTFILES.ignore so that translators have less problems. Alexandre

Disconnected Arabic Letters on Mac OS X

Hello Folks, Did anybody check that? I have version 0.46. past versions also fail to do the task, when I install them on my Mac OS X 10.4.11. The letters appear but without being connected. Hey guys, I remember surprising some of the old Inkscape devs when I confirmed that the systemLanguage attribute does in fact work with Inkscape. (one language at a time). Today I created an svg to sent to a friend who does translations, with notes on what parts of the svg do what. I tested it in eog, Firefox and Inkscape. Inkscape's only bug was that it didn't take into account language variations. So en_GB would show up for en_US in a switch. Eye of Gnome on the other hand did the variations correctly but failed to not render tags with incorrect languages outside of switch tags. Hi, Before we hit strings freeze, it would be great to do something about Pedro (XMPP client). I know that this feature is by no means complete and is supposed to be rewritten more or less from scratch, but what we have currently is something optional that is always in English. In my not very humble opinion even such a feature should be localized. Keeping something that is not ready but somewhat available unlocalizable intentionally doesn't really sound wise to me. Could we please have this fixed? Another thing is that some messages are actually marked for translation and don't work. So I'm tempted to move them to POTFILES.ignore, because they don't make any sense to translator at the moment: even if they rebuild Inkscape with --enable-inkboard they can't even check what it looks like. Reducing the number of control/tool bars

Hi everyone, With the new snap control bar, Inkscape is becoming quite plump above the waist. Combined with labels that are longer in many other languages than they are in english, this does not leave very much space to draw in the end. See this example in french on a 1280*800 display (i.e. not the smallest around) http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1047321/inkscape/fat_ui.png The width is about half-drawing/half-palette, and, more importantly, the height cannot even accommodate all the tools even in this fully maximized setting. The snap control bar is not very wide but control bars do not seem to be dockable one next to each other. They apparently need to be on top of each other. Is that specific to my version of GTK or a known limitation? Now my real questions: what do you think about removing some of the toolbar items and reducing the number of control bars to two, as before? Do we really need buttons for new document, save, print, etc. when all of them are readily available in the menu and have standard, well known keyboard shortcuts? Having the snap controls in the toolbar make sense because the expose functionality that is more difficult to get to otherwise. But for the rest... My opinion would be: item status why? new remove present just a cm above, in the file menu; well known shortcut open remove idem save remove idem print remove idem + less frequently used import ? export ? undo remove present to reach in the edit menu; very well known shortcut redo remove idem copy remove idem cut remove idem paste remove idem zoom . . align keep it is inkscape specific except maybe: layers ? there is the layers' dropdown already for easy access global prefs remove if users really need to get to the global preferences often enough that it requires a button here, it's probably that there is a deeper problem. Plus this would reduce the confusion between the two because of their very similar icons (as was mentioned earlier on the list). doc. prefs keep Removing that would make enough room to fit the snap bar next to the main control bar. If GTK can't do it dynamically, it would need to be hardcoded, for now. These changes might seem to be at the detriment of beginners, but once again they target: - functions that are similar in most software, so for which the keyboard shortcuts are easier and more efficient to learn - functions that are easily available in the menu. Navigating to a menu is not that tedious especially when the menu is just a few pixels above the tool bar button. I looks like a bad habit carried over from some windows programs rather than like a real design decision on the part of the linux desktops. Plus, other apps (like the gimp) don't have buttons for such things and I haven't heard anyone complaining (about that part of the UI at least ;) ) I hope it is not too late to mention that. Hi, Here are a few interface buglets in 0.46+svn: 1. "Duplicate Current Layer..." has "..." but doesn't open a dialog. 2. Icons for flipping/rotating are not being taken from icons.svg. 3. "Extensions" sub-menu items still use "Effects". 4. "Guide around page" should be "Guide Around Page" for consistency. 5. "Display Mode" radio buttons are not updated if one uses "Toggle". 6. Re. bug fixing before 0.37, could anyone take a look at https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/379817 , which makes a lot of usual operations impossible now (or very very painful to "fix"). Font selection broken on windows

Hi, the font selection dropdown doesn't work on windows, at least in Inkscape21345-0905140303 on Windows Vista. When the dropdown is opened, an inkscape.exe task appears on the taskbar as if the process was running outside of the Inkscape main window. Selecting fonts has no effect on the typed text. Molumen

Kill SPIcon patch

I have a patch that replaces SPIcon with GtkImage, by redefining sp_icon_new and typedefing SPIcon to GtkImage. The amount of changes is rather modest - about 10 files changed. Vectorising Resolution

Hey guys, I've tried to use the fill and vectorising tools in inkscape to create vectors from existing bitmaps; but I noticed an odd effect with the path that all requires two simplify node functions to get the path into a manageable state. Are we currently taking into account the resolution of the raster image we are vectoring in order to smooth out the complexities of the pixelisation? The maths need to be able to reduce the noise from the pixel shapes and try and increase the signal from the shape of the image section... although perhaps this is only useful for cartoon type images. ENOUGH WITH THE ICONS!!!

Sorry about the tone of this message, but... can we stop wasting time and energy on the icons and focus on getting 0.47 out the door? As a (or I believe still the only) release warden for 0.47, I am authoritatively saying, "not this time". My rationale is based on the fact that there are obviously still too many mixed feelings for this change to have been made during the release preparation period. Even after 0.47 is out the door, we shouldn't even bother with a poll until someone adds an icon set chooser in prefs. This way EVERYONE can be happy without having to copy/move files. As a side note... for the remainder of this release cycle... (0.47) How about every time someone feels the need to start or reply to an icons thread, they just go to the bug tracker and try to see if they can reproduce a bug still marked as "New". It's a far more productive use of time and the community will end up appreciating the results MUCH more. Having similar or the same discussion(s) every few months has not changed a thing, nor will it anytime soon. This seems like one of the most ridiculous wastes of resources, to the point that I'm flat out angry rather than aggravated. My wife thinks that we're all nuts with the frequency of these repetitive and non-conclusive discussions. I don't know that I disagree her. :-) Anyways, before I lose my cool and start with the profanity and insults (which I'm on the edge)... let's just be done for now. Sincerely, Josh P.S. Hi everyone, Trying to sort some bugs on Launchpad I dug into icon sizes a bit. In previous conversations, Jon Cruz specified that Inkscape icon sizes are defined in src/icon-sizes.h: enum IconSize { ICON_SIZE_INVALID = ::GTK_ICON_SIZE_INVALID, ICON_SIZE_MENU = ::GTK_ICON_SIZE_MENU, ICON_SIZE_SMALL_TOOLBAR = ::GTK_ICON_SIZE_SMALL_TOOLBAR, ICON_SIZE_LARGE_TOOLBAR = ::GTK_ICON_SIZE_LARGE_TOOLBAR, ICON_SIZE_BUTTON = ::GTK_ICON_SIZE_BUTTON, ICON_SIZE_DND = ::GTK_ICON_SIZE_DND, ICON_SIZE_DIALOG = ::GTK_ICON_SIZE_DIALOG, ICON_SIZE_DECORATION }; However, those definitions seem to have strange effects in the facts. Ideally, it should always have the same height as the color picker (hence be affected by the choice of size in the picker itself, which is not the case currently) . the lock and eye icon of the layer drop down, the zoom icon at the top right corner of the canvas, and probably other places, which display the same issue as the icons above http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1047321/custom-decoration.xcf So there is a common pattern (hence a common fix?). Overall, it seems that stock icons (i.e not Inkscape provided ones) scale, but Inkscape icons do not scale. I understand this since Inkscape icons used to be designed and rendered in a different way. However: - I thought that recent changes to the icon handling would make Inkscape icons behave as the rest (this was tested with rev 21339 and I haven't seen any icon related changes in the svn log since, and with no custom configuration in .config/Inkscape) - even if they do not behave as the rest, they should at least display at their maximum size when the GTK size it set higher that it (32 and 48). Compiling Inkscape 0.46...No Imagemagick found

I posted to the Inkscape User list yesterday regarding missing raster effects from the effects menu (If it appears like I've cross-posted I apologize) but I'm not sure the User list was the appropriate place afterall. Doing some investigative work I figured I would uninstall Inkscape 0.46 on my Ubuntu 9.04 box and compile it from scratch. I noticed that when I run the ./configure it will not find Imagemagick even though I have it installed along with the development package for it. Perhaps this is what is preventing the raster effects from being displayed in the effects menu. Some of you that are running Ubuntu 9.04...have you noticed any of these issues? I'm not exactly sure what I need to do detect Imagemagick. I have not compiled the stable version of Inkscape before. I get that straight from the repos along with all of the other Inkscape dependencies. As a side note I have compiled a recent snapshot of 0.46+devel and the raster effects do display but none of them are working. I would appreciate any help. Miter Dynamic Offset

I'm frequently using the dynamic offset to add a thick contour around the drawing. Problem is, it looks awful when the drawing has sharp edges. Would it be hard to create other types of dynamic offset, e.g. miter dynamic offset (which would look like the outer edge of a miter stroke)? Mentors, since there was no decision made about this, you need to decide how the student's work will be committed (given that we are working towards a release). GSoC Inkscape API project

Hi Soren, At this past LGM I had a chance to discuss several of the GSoC projects with helpful people, including Chris Lilley (of the SVG Working Group). I'd explained my thoughts that what we added should be focused on exposing DOM, first for the SVG itself, then additionally for the UI, since among other things that presents a potential plugin/extension author with a single unified interface/ approach to have to worry about. Exposing things via XPath functions, and DOM events stays in that same paradigm. It also allows us to have a simple way to expose things eventually though JavaScript (but also others). Focusing on DOM, DOM Events and XPath would give a simple paradigm that is familiar to designers, especially since they are taught DOM and JavaScript DOM manipulation in college nowadays. Anyway, once I had expressed that in my opinion that would be a good route to focus on I mentioned that you said you would be considering that among other approaches. Chris then responded basically with "Consider? Why would they do anything else?" We had a bit of a follow- up, but the general result was a consensus that building our API around DOM will give Inkscape the best long-term benefits. I just wanted to be sure to get that mentioned before you jump full- speed into GSoC now, since it is time. Again, good luck, Jon.

Hi, Since 0.47 is really close now, it would be great to have decision if the new auto swatches palette can make it. Jon, this is primarily for you :) Currently there are at least two bugs (1) no auto update for swatch, 2) "Auto" is not marked for translation) and the whole feature doesn't work quite as expected. For instance, anticipated flat fills are created as linear gradient elements (the old dialog we were supposed to get rid of is used for that too). Is there any work definitely planned to iron this out before we hit hard freeze? Alexandre

how to handle unknown LPEs for shapes

Hi all, Currently, when an unknown LPE is applied to a path, inkscape ignores the whole LPE stack on that path and simply draws the 'd' attribute. (so the path is not resetted or anything. the path will look like intended and like it is shown in all other SVG readers). My problem now is: what to do for other shapes? (stars, circles, etc.). I guess the best thing to do is have a popup upon loading the file that asks the user whether he wants to convert that shape to a simple path, such that it will look like intended. I don't know whether this (convert e.g. a star to a path), while loading the file, will make inkscape unstable... Any help is appreciated, Johan

Dashed Path in Inkscape

I've made an extension to produce a dashed path in Inkscape. It will use the Dashed pattern in the stroke style and will explicitly cut the path to correspond to the dash pattern. According to the glib manual for g_try_new: http://library.gnome.org/devel/glib/unstable/glib-Memory-Allocation.html#g-… "Attempts to allocate n_structs elements of type struct_type, and returns NULL on failure. Contrast with g_new(), which aborts the program on failure. The returned pointer is cast to a pointer to the given type. If n_structs is 0 it returns NULL. ... Tool pointer pixmaps

I've uploaded some improved (imho) pixmaps for the tool pointers in this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/325145 --- The changes are: - Tweaked the appearance of 3dbox and eraser - added crosshairs to connector and bucket fill - new icon for bucket fill - Unified the appearance of pen and pencil tools - Unified the size and position of the color dropper icon The icons had different sizes and positions relative to the crosshairs, so I tried to unify that. Now the modified icons fit in a 26x26 square at the upper left of the total area (32x32) so there is space in the bottom left for potential modified versions (for instance adding a + sign for addition, like the gradient tool has). Some icons (bucket fill, color dropper and connector) have a slightly different hotspots now, so they'll have to be adjusted. There are others that can be adjusted, but with these changes at least the set is more homogenous in size and style. The pen icon for the bezier tool is in my opinion confusing, since the pen icon in the UI is assigned to the calligraphic tool. Nobody seems to matter, though. ---- The only change needed is to check and correct the tool hostpot in some of them, but I guess that would be a trivial change (that I don't know how to perform :-) What do you think?

Tango Icons Ready

I have completed converting the Tango icon set made by Jesusda to discrete icons. The only missing icons are in the geometry tool (which doesn't seem to work anyway), but I'll add them shortly. Should I make it the default for Linux? This would be accomplished by installing the contents of a subdirectory named "tango" to $PREFIX/share/inkscape/icons/hicolor. Windows users would still see the "hicolor" directory, but could rename the tango directory to hicolor and see the Tango icons. Linux users could use the old icons by putting them in ~/.icons/OldInkscape and modifying the index.theme file to inherit from their theme of choice (Human, gnome, etc.). I'm preparing a README with detailed instructions. Incorrect handling of <text> without <tspan>

I have been working on a patch for bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/167904 sp_te_insert_line I basically created a working patch (excluding end of string line breaks and probably spacing issues). The patch checks if the text in contained in a text box is a child of <svg:text> instead of <svg:tspan> . If this is true a <tspan> is inserted as a child of the <text> and the string is transfered to become a child of the <tspan> . this This works but it fails for strange reasons. If the text box is selected and the cursor is moved over with the keyboard and a line break is inserted, inkscape crashes. I traced this back to a problem occurring with the Glib::ustring::iterator s being used. In the instances that the patch fails the iterator's values don't match up to their expected value. The problem also occurs after a line break, an undo, and a repeat of the line break. I'm fairly new to the code base so I may be doing things out of order or failing to call a necessary function. I'm not exactly sure why this is occurring after these actions are performed. What can I do to solve this issue. I have posted the code in question to the bug report. I have a feeling this problem is occurring from the layout obtained from the SPItem and the actions that occur afterwards. Thanks

message overwrites rotation value

I had a box that appear to be skewed. So I tried to grab and I saw numbers flashing on bottom window bar, but it kept getting overwritten with "Rectangle in layer Layer 1. Click selection to toggle scale/rotation handles." Maybe that message should go somewhere else? Or the rotation percentage should be displayed somewhere else? What is my workaround for now? Where can I see the number or where can I manually type it in? I am on inkscape-21256 (from yesterday's snapshot).

Jasper, hi, Well, I think (and this happens a lot) that this is the old symptom where the files which are compiled for win32 and those in the unix Automake files are not always in sync. What is the purpose of this checkbox in LPE parameters? Does it work at all? I tried it with Knot, but checking it does not remove the knot on the intersection. Error in color management

There are serious rendering errors in the color management caused by using ARGB encoding used instead of RGBA. Reported with patch in https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/372171. Using the patch makes tho soft proofing match Photoshop's soft proofing.

Bug Hunt for 0.47

Hey All, As with other things, why fix what isn't broken? This release' bug hunt is a combination of the last two bug hunts in terms of functionality and scoring. Again, this is liberally recycling bryce's announcements. ;) Traditionally, we specify a point target for us to reach, and award us points based on the severity of the bug: 3, 6, 9, or 12 points for low, medium, high, and critical. This releases goal is again 500 points. We only give points for true bug fixes - not bugs simply closed due to being dupes, invalid, works-for-me, or whatnot. As with the last release, we won't count fixes to the website, translations, docs, and so on, we'll award points only for true code-level bug fixes. While our Frost goal is to close 500 points worth of *any* bug, when we get to Freeze our goal will be to have 0 Critical bugs, so efforts put into closing Crits will be doubly good! As with 0.45's bug hunt, we do want to encourage work on old bugs. So, points will be doubled for any bugs fixed that have been open for a year or more. Bug Hunt Goal: 500 points Current: 0 points Low: 3 - 6 pts Med: 6 - 12 pts High: 9 - 18 pts Critical: 12 - 24 pts We especially need testers (and bug fixers) for Windows and OSX. We have a tendency to have a number of platform specific bugs, so all the help we can get would be appreciated. If you are a Windows or OSX user, you too can be a big help, simply by browsing the bug tracker and see if you can reproduce the bug, and then add a comment on the bug one way or the other. No technical experience required. :-) I will be posting scoring as we have in the past. Note that the "current" score above is actually incorrect as a few bugs have been fixed since the Frost began. If you can make time to participate it would be greatly appreciated by all. Even if you aren't a programmer, you can help to confirm that bugs are indeed fixed by others. 0.47 App Icon Proposal

I'd like to propose to ship v0.47 with a refreshed application icon. The proposed icon [1] includes special versions for low resolutions guaranteeing a sharp rendition and recognizability. Scaling down or rendering a high detail SVG into a small canvas ends up blurry and unreadable [2]. The icon feels close to being native on all the major platforms. save as convert text to path loses content

Using inkscape 21256 from yesterday's snapshot. Doing a save as to save as PDF and selecting convert text to path makes me lose my content. Only part is rendered in the resulting PDF. I see this in multiple SVG projects. If I don't check that, the resulting file appears to be a bitmap. Now I realize that in that case the fonts where I added an outline using object Stroke are the ones that don't look good. The others look fine and pdffonts show me those are embedded. (That success is only without using convert text to path.) Although it may look like the geometriy tool is just a step from being finished and perhaps it's already of use for some people, some important things still need to be added before it is truly usable. These involve coding on a fundamental level as well as some careful design decisions, and it is likely that this will entail (considerable?) changes in some of the GC LPEs, too. IMHO it would be advisable to not make these in a rush while releasing 0.47. In this context, I'd once again like to sincerely apologize that my work is still unfinished. Unfortunately, due to sad personal circumstances related to my family it is likely that I won't be able to participate in Inkscape development anytime soon (I can't predict yet how long that may be, I'm afraid), and this post is just a rare occasion since by coincidence I caught a glimpse of Alexandre's question. I will join you again as soon as I can manage, promise! Perhaps I'll be able to do an occasional bug fix during the release process (although frankly speaking I doubt it). While I'm at it, here is one question and two random comments that occurred to me recently: 1) I seem to recall that there is an online tutorial on scientific poster creation with Inkscape. Does someone happen to have a link at hand? 2) The default value of the "Smoothing factor" in the pencil tool is 4, but this often produces paths with a huge number of nodes. Wouldn't something like 25 or 30 make more sense? BTW, does the number of nodes depend on how quickly the line is drawn? 3) After a fresh installation all lines drawn with the pen/pencil tools have no stroke but are filled, which is very unnatural for freehand lines. On the other hand, the defaults in preferences-skeleton.h are set the other way round. Are these settings discarded, and why? Best regards and good luck for the release of an awesome 0.47! Max

We had some difficulties to merge it with the official trunk recently, so it is not up to date (it's a version from 2 weeks ago). If someone knows how to fix this... Tablet stopped work in Dev builds

I just downloaded the Oct 24 Windows build and found that my tablet isn't working properly with it. I can move the cursor with tablet pen, but when I press on the tablet nothing draws. I tried toggling the "Use pressure" button. My tablet still works fine in 0.46 and was working in an earlier build I was using last night (I don't think it was more than a week or two old). Blur and opacity slow

Dear Inkscape developers, first of all I wish to thank you for your great work, Inkscape is extremely useful! One thing I noticed is that using blur and sometimes opacity makes Inkscape behave slow. It's not only when moving / scaling objects that have blur or opacity values applied but also the whole document editing seems to be slower then. It would be great if these features could be optimized in one of the next versions. Please let me know if I should file a bug report on this request. Best Gero Mudersbach

Hi, I only know the "wrong" way to enable experimental lpes: uncomment the line #define LPE_ENABLE_TEST_EFFECTS in src/live_effects/effect.cpp. The right way is via some switch in some config file but I'm not sure. Under windows, I think it's a matter of changing one line in build.xml... *BUT* These effects are in fact experiemental: only use them for testing/debugging/commenting. An experimental lpe will almost surely undergo deep modifications before it becomes non experimental. Either the very definition of its parameters or the way it is rendered might be affected, and in both cases all art work based on it will be lost! So use carfully. (and of course, if you enabled experimental lpes in the "wrong" way, don't forget not to commit this change to svn!) Some lpes are in good shape however. What is needed to enable them is a good collection of tests cases... So if your favorite lpe is still hidden, consider supplying a test file for it. jfb.

Problem noticed with preferences

In working on some code debugging, I noticed that the preferences were not loaded as the program was first using them. Among other immediate issues this had blocked some debug toggle code from ever being invoked. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/367752 As the program starts, preferences are just set to the defaults but not loaded. Then part-way through startup they *do* get loaded. So among other things bits of code might be initialized one way and used another. It would be very helpful if anyone who is looking into a bug might check to see if this is complicating the issue they are working on. If so, then there might be a few cascaded bugs we can reproduce now and then close as soon as the prefs initialization is fixed.

Change in marker rendering

For some reason the marker test in SVN is now rendered differently. It seems to be neither a regression nor an improvement (where it is different from the previous rendering both renderings are in error), but given that we're working towards a release I thought I'd mention it in case it was changed accidentally. Thanks for your Advice Diederik and Alexandre, with regards, to the tools tips, I think once you are proficient with using Inkscape, you won't notice the contents of the tools tips as you know what each Icon stands for. When you are a novice and are just learning Inkscape, (Which I was not so long ago you are constantly reading the tooltips to make sure you are using the right tool and at the same time noticing the keyboard shortcut, and after a few times using a particular tool, you start to remember the shortcut and then start using it, which helps you to become more proficient with Inkscape. Building autopackages requires a willingness to learn about linking and check that libraries are linked properly so as to cause as little trouble as possible. There are also a few places in the codebase where we could use relaytool to make libraries optional at runtime. I think we will require a little bit of help from the autopackage project if we are going to get this service up and running again. Aaron Spike

Hey All, We seem to be in a bad place with our nightly builds. It would be excellent if we could have a few volunteers step up to produce nightlies (or at least builds from every few days). Anyone who can (or would like to) produce builds for Windows, Linux, and OSX would be making a great contribution to keeping us on track to release 0.47 in the near future. If you are interested, please speak up and we will do what we can to get you producing builds ASAP. For the record, this is how bad the situation is: Win32 - April 18th OSX - March 3rd Linux - nothing from this year (Autopackages are over a year old) So again, if lending some CPU cycles and a little time is all you can do, it is still a LOT for the community. Mitigating color-interpolation-filters problems

According to the SVG spec filters can be rendered in either the sRGB or the linearRGB color space, the same goes for gradients and alpha compositing). The latter is controlled by the color-interpolation attribute, the former by the color-interpolation-filters attribute. Inkscape does not handle either of these. Unfortunately the default for color-interpolation is sRGB, while the default for color-interpolation-filters is linearRGB... This means that Inkscape's rendering of pretty much any filter is incorrect (how severe this is depends on the filter). And perhaps more importantly, it differs from how other renderers behave. I don't think it's a good idea at this time to truely "solve" this problem. But perhaps we could make sure that new filters created by Inkscape automatically have their color-interpolation-filters attribute set to sRGB? Hey All, Volunteers needed! Do you want to contribute to Inkscape but don't program? We can still use your help! We need volunteers for the following tasks: Testing SVN/Nightly Build (windows and osx especially) Reviewing and triaging Bug Reports Updating Tutorials & Documentation Reviewing Release Notes for accuracy/completion Writing PR/Announcements for our upcoming release Those are needs we always really have, but, we can always use an extra hand in the lead-up to release. Right now, if we could have a lot of attention put on our bug tracker for confirming bugs, figuring out what has been fixed, tagging things, and just getting it in better shape for the bug hunt, it will make a world of difference to the people trying to fix things. Hi all, I've unhidden the sketch lpe. I decided to remove the "construction line" feature in this effect (it used to place the tangent lines randomly along the input path). My feeling was that the placement should either be tuned by hand, or guessed from curvature extrema or something... Anyway, I felt it was not good enough as is, and would eventually be worth a separate effect (the issue with independant effect is that you need to apply 2 effects on the *same* source path, which is not possible atm --- but no doubt this will come sooner or later! ;-) Anyone having an opinion about this feature or it's eventual splitting in a separate effect? By the way, my dream is that we could import or mimic Blender's 'node' system into inkscape: the effect editor would be a window within which each effect would be a little box with input and output slots (+ input fields + an eventual small window to show the result of the effect), and you would be free to connect ones with others, defining not only a pipeline, but a full graph with parallel ways, etc... You generally end up with a nice plate of noodles, but it's very powerfull. Notice the same thing could be used for both lpe and filters effects. Cheers, jfb.

Win32 snapshots on Modevia broken?

Hello, For about 2 weeks now, the size of the Windows builds on Modevia is 38Mb, while the size was 44Mb before. I haven't tried to download/install them, because I think they are probably incomplete? Anyone has information about this? Thanks in advance.

Out of Memory Crash

Hi I'm new here, just compiled r21187 on Ubuntu. I'm getting an "Out of Memory!" error when importing an A2 pdf with a large bitmap. I hope to check it's not something funny with my build before reporting a bug. The pdf file is 112Mb in size. Evince on Ubuntu opens the pdf well, but Abode Reader on Windows struggles. Inkscape shows a preview in the PDF Import Settings, but crashes while doing the actual import. A back trace is attached. I watched the free memory while the import was in progress and noted: With Inkscape running - 1195Mb free RAM PDF Import Settings with preview displayed - 1098Mb free RAM Import proceeds and free RAM drops to 48Mb before spilling to swop. 835Mb of swop is used before the app crashes. Total memory usage in RAM and swop before crashing = 1982Mb. Nearly 2Gb of memory is used to import a 112Mb PDF. Seems to me something is wrong. Any ideas if it's my build at fault? Spray Tool is NOT going in 0.47... we can't introduce it so late in this cycle if we want to have a shot at releasing anytime soon. Hey All, In an effort to honor Bryce's work in this department for previous releases, I've liberally copied & pasted what he wrote last time. :) I know that it looks incredibly ambitious with the dates on there, but it IS doable provided people have the time and desire. I'd be interested to see what would happen if we plan a bug sprint weekend on May 9 & 10. We can have whoever is up for the challenge commit to it and see what we can pull off in two days. The following is based on previous release plans. Let me know if there's anything missing. 1. Open development. (Complete) 2. Chill. Development focuses on wrapping up. (In progress) No further refactoring. Identify 'make distcheck' issues Triage bug reports Run an About Screen contest First draft of Release Notes. Update tutorials and other docs 3. Frost. Most development complete. (May 1, 2009) Release Notes should be >90% filled in. Bug Hunt: 500 points Post inkscape-0.47-alpha.tar.gz 4. Feature Freeze. No further development work. (May 15, 2009) Disable features that can't be finished in time. Focus on critical bug fixing. Finalize all tutorials, docs, etc. Finalize all extensions. Translators create translations. Inkscape must pass 'make distcheck' Post inkscape-0.47-beta.tar.gz 5. Hard freeze. Only release wardens can commit to mainline. (May 25, 2009) No further string changes. Printing Resolution

Hi Thanks for a great app. My GIS app has limited print composer functionality and I've been looking for a tool to create fancy titleblocks around my maps. I'm able to export a map from my GIS app and export a titleblock from my CAD app both as pdf files. Using Inkscape I'm able to overlay the titlebock on the map, mask some of the map with a white hatch, save as a pdf and finally print from Adobe Reader. This works well as both the vector titleblock and raster map print clearly. I could save some time if I could print from Inkscape directly instead of going via pdf to Adobe Reader. I tried file -> print -> rendering -> vector, but I lose my bitmap. I also tried file -> print -> rendering -> bitmap -> DPI setting, but always get a low resolution print out. The manual [1] states "The second option is Bitmap which rasterizes the output. There is an option to set the DPI for the output but this does not appear to have any effect (Bug). All drawing elements are rendered correctly but with poor resolution." So my question then is "has this bug been resolved yet?" I searched on Launchpad, but didn't find it. I'm using version 0.46 on Windows XP. I tried to compile the development version on Ubuntu 7.10, but ran into problems with a Cairo library that appears to be too old (1.4). Thanks for your time. Hi guys and girls! Working in Inkscape I've found some inconvenience recently. I often work in Inkscape creating and experimenting with logotypes. I do like this vector application. :) I migrated to Gentoo a few months ago and didn't have time to deal with Inkscape devel especially of dependencies. So, I use stable version now. If I remember correctly there was available many LPE in dev Inkscape, but they disappeared somewhat. I especially pay attention on envelope, which was very helpful. I'm lack of it. I had to use GIMP to use perspective on shapes, save them to png and then trace them in Inkscape which was a little tricky. I hope guys you restore adequate LPE or some perspective tool for users. :) Next issue. Sometimes I have to add some nods on a shape in a straigh line (horizontal or vertical - it doesn't matter). So I adjust a guideline and "cut" shape - that is, add nods. I had a short experience in Blender - the 3D application and still remember helpful tool which cuts shape to add nods (velocities? - I don't remember) on it. I think of a thing that it would be useful in Inkscape too. Operating on nods during play with logotypes is really common - so you often move them forward and backward. I don't mind that the tool (let's call it interactive knife) cuts one shape into antother two like difference. I want it to add series of nods on a shape cause adding them by clicking is very tricky. Imagine - Hold [ALT] keys and LMB and move your mouse - such an interactive selection tool could add nods on a shape (outline). See? I had to use offset or dynamic offstet (excuse me, I don't remember actual name because I use Polish version) just today. I found this feature quite interesting, but in rough use. I needed to enlarge a shape about literraly a few pixels - you know - logo require precission, and found it a little tricky to do it. It would be fantastic to add some numeric fiels for offsets like for width/height. What do you think about it? Some months ago I told one developer about my idea of eraser improvement. He found it quite interesting. So I repeat it. So could you add default shapes for eraser for instance a circle or a square? The tool uses calligraphy mechanism today. Do you intent to improve it before next release? Eraser is quite interesting tool but is really useless as far the calligraphy philosophy is concerned - you know, utterly useless change of angles while moving/turning. Broken icon build

Conical gradient simulation using filters

I've been playing with simulating conical gradients a bit more and have updated the Wiki page with the latest results (including some SVGs and some PNGs showing how they are rendered by Inkscape and Batik): http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Advanced_Gradients As can be seen Inkscape can now render all the required filters properly and in agreement with Batik.

Krzysztof, Please STOP touching the icon code and icons. You have been ignoring the problems others are seeing, have ignored the information provided to you on them, and have been breaking existing functionality. It is clear that you don't understand the aspects that are tripping you up (since I don't believe you're being malicious about it), but you are causing serious regressions in behavior. I've also have had to spend a lot of time unbreaking things that I otherwise need to be able to finish some of the new work I had been adding. Also could you *PLEASE* complete the list of icon renamings that I've asked you for. We need this for compatibility, including needing to use it in some icon.cpp code that you removed yesterday. But the list of name changes is very important to document. In case you're just stuck, I've gotten a start added under src/widgets/mappings.xml Please get that updated with all the changes you've made. Thanks.

Docked dialogs

I'm pretty sure I suggested these before, and if I'm not mistaken I was told there were some implementation problems. But I think these are really important, so here I go again, perhaps someone can come up with a technical solution. I have some issues with the docked dialogs. The first issue is that the dock status doesn't stick across sessions. I always have to re-open them whenever I start a new instance, open an existing file, etc. And in my work process, I always need the fill&stroke and the layers docks open, so I have to re-open the two docks and then adjust the size of the layers dialog (because by default it opens at only two layers height, even if there's a lot of free space to open it in a larger size). Is there no possibility of somehow keeping their status in the inkscape config or the specific file properties? The second problem is the width of the docks. The fill&stroke is excessively large! I have a resolution of 1280X1024 and it still take a HUGE chunk of space. and all the widgets are so large you can barely fit two docked dialogs in the same screen. if you compare that to other applicaitons - Photoshop, BLender, Gimp - you'll see that usually widgets on graphic apps are smaller. This way an artist can keep many open dialogs and still have a large canvas to work on. Lastly, is it possible to add a "layers" button to the main toolbar, to open the layers dialog? We have an "align" button and an "xml editor" button, I'm sure the layers dialog is important enough to also have a button. Tooltips in 0.47

Hi, I've been working on the FM Inkscape Manual which is now focussing on release 0.47 of Inkscape. and while using the development version of inkscape I've noticed that the tooltips for the various tool bars in inkscape no longer include the keyboard shortcuts. The shortcuts were included in the tooltips for the .46 release and I have found these extremely useful in learning the keyboard shortcuts. Also when markers like arrowheads are added to a stroke can the colour be changed? When I change the stroke colour of a path, the markers always remain 'black' when I want them to be the same colour as the stroke. I've managed to do a workaround to add colour to arrowheads, but the path looses it's flexability when I do this. If there is not currently a way that the stroke marker colours can be changed at present, I think this would be a good feature to add to inkscape. Cheers, John Curwood

NEW: PDF import font name translation

(thanks to patch 179589) A new checkbox on the PDF import dialog, "Replace PDF fonts with closest-named installed fonts" (on by default) attempts to replace all font names in the imported PDF with the most similar names of those fonts installed on your system. For example, if the PDF uses the font "TimesNewRomanPSMT" and you have "Times New Roman" installed, that font will be used, which will likely give you a more correct appearance than the unknown font "TimesNewRomanPSMT" that will be displayed as the default sans serif font. This is a temporary fix necessary because Inkscape cannot yet extract the fonts from the PDF files it imports nor can it embed them into SVG; when it gets these capabilities, such font name conversion will become unnecessary because all fonts will be preserved. -- bulia byak Inkscape. An eraser tool for Inkscape

I dreamed of it for a long time : a non destructive eraser tool ! Take a look at its possibilities in the attached file. Simply draw a white line on top of any shape or object (better with deep color for the first try). Then group the two objects and apply the filter ; the white line becomes completely transparent. If applied on a group which includes images or light colors, you can adjust the opacity with the second color matrix : for example enter 10 and -9 as the two last numbers in the last row below. Then if you select the white object with Ctrl+Click, you can modify it, move its nodes, or press Shift and draw new lines, or apply a distortion or any other filter... The possibilities are infinite. Of course not absolutely perfect but already very usable. It's not made to replace the Object/Mask feature but it can complete it. Enjoy ! ivan

Since we are talking about dialogs :) Mental, a while back you added a tab to Layers dialog that says "Layers". It's the only tab there. Are you planning to add some functionality to the dialog for 0.47? If not, maybe it would be wise to revert this change? As it is now, the dialog doesn't look like the rest of the dialogs. Alexandre

PerspectiveObject / Envelope Effect

Hello, I am very interested in the PerspectiveObject feature that is mentioned in the roadmap for milestone 15 / Inkscape 0.49. Has the implementation already started? Couldn't find any information. Also, the link to the example on the wiki seems to be broken. Does anyone know what it was showing? Perhaps I might get my hands on a developer machine in a few weeks, so I might be able to help out. In the meantime, I'd like to try and fix the Python implemented envelope effect. It looks like it's only using the corners of the envelope for the perspective, but doesn't take any curved sides into account. Text split / merge tool.

I've made a simple extension (just lxml twiddling) which, given a selection of a single svg:text or svg:flowRoot, splits it up into separate svg:texts, or, given a selection multiple svg:texts and/or svg:flowRoots, merges them into one svg:text. Splitting in merging appears to the user to be line oriented (actually xpath is collecting flowParas ans tspans). Really handy when you have a list of labels as a single text and want to split them into separate objects quickly. Is it worth including in the distribution (either before or after .47) and if so what should I do with it? And if not, is there somewhere else I should put it? Cheers -Terry

Hello JiHo, I tried to roll back to version 0.44 and to version 0.45 on Mac OS X. I also installed the X11 packaged on under the name X11User_Tiger_intel.dmg at http://inkscape.modevia.com/macosx-snap/?M=D And deleted the mentioned directory each time I rolled back to a previous version and after I installed the X11(prior to rolling back). I still have disconnected Arabic letters - even when I past them from the outside. The thing is that I had a good Arabic support, with connected letters either on 0.44 or on 0.45 (or on both). What could have happened? Any clues? Thanks! Problem with wiki

I think I might have just seen a hidden problem with the wiki. I went to update a page on our versions, and saw contents for our release notes instead. http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Tracking_Dependencies The history listed things as expected, with the time of the last edit corresponding to the time I updated a table on that page. However, the contents were from that other page. Our servers were down for a bit the other day, so it is possible that something got corrupted. Could all of you take a quick moment to skim things and see if any pages are holding the wrong information? Thanks

Two icon issues

Hi, just a quick note on two current icon issues. The first is that some of the icons when rendered from our internal svg are blurring out at different sizes. This one is due to changes made on Saturday, but I should have a handle on fixing very shortly. The other one is a bit of a spill-over issue in icons on some versions of GTK. This mirrors an issue I saw before where some icons in the same setup were being cropped. For default with a size set to 18 pixels, the GTK theme is using 16 pixel icons and causing issues. I'm not sure if this was a bug with those older versions or just not quite setting things up well. With the same setup, I do not see a problem if the gtk theme sets the size to 12 or 14 or 16 or 22, etc. Just that one main size is triggering it for me. So to sum up... if anyone sees the first issue, don't worry; it's being fixed. However, if anyone sees either cropping or junk on the right or bottom on icons of the second issue, please drop a quick response which which platform and which versions of GTK+ these problems are seen with. GSoC, KML-SVG: The proposal, version 2

I have made a more detailed proposal of what might be done, including a rough timeline (actually just the time amounts - I put the timeline into Google Calendar). The basic part is what I find both necessary and lasting to tell that KML files can be essentially displayed as SVG. There are also additional ideas for improvements but I don't feel like I should decide what is important or needed. This is where I am asking you for directions. Initially I was having many ideas of what could be made in this project. Now I'm afraid there is hardly any chance to touch exporting from SVG to KML (except for an extremely simple cases or some silly assumptions) or the import wizard for Inkscape, as in the first proposal. I would rather focus on the KML->SVG transform. Of course, I would like to know your point of view. As for the previous version of application: firstly, I realised that those "configuration options" are not really needed and may be considered as an extension or optional part. Secondly, the mentioned web server requirement issue is no more important. I have adjusted my "framework" for this project and it works fine for static XSLT's which may be enough for the project. I have taken into account the time needed for basic learning, preparing tools, debugging and unpredicted situations, thus the timeline may be quite realistic. Any clues are welcome :-) The plan (basic part) seems to be finishable before the mid-term evaluation, so I am asking for suggestions what else should be done. Hi all, Are there any news on old plans to add multipage support to Inkscape? Having multiple pages would be fantastic. We could then use Inkscape for the formatting of books and magazines, and pdf slides for talks.
