I made some changes in the Tango set to match some aspects of the current oficial set. http://www.ohweb.com.ar/screenshots/Inkscape/tango-icons-colors.svg.tar.gz -Created a new icon for the 3D box. No more box with trapezoid :-) -Added colors to the geometric primitives -Unified and tweaked the drawing icons (now all point upwards) -Created a new icon for the gradient tool -Created a new icon for the flood fill tool Maybe some of them need some tweaking. It's my first time creating tango icons, but I think they are acceptable. I don't like the color icons, but I'm trying to reach a compromise and see if people who prefered the oficial set find this set acceptable. I'll try to tweak the bucket icon a little, maybe to make more evident the part of the dripping paint (separating more the paint blob of the bucket). I didn't change the tweak icon, please let me know if you think it should be changed. I find the hand icon more appropriate, since that tool allows some sort of manual tweaking, some humanization. It's a very complete tool and it would be very hard to find only one icon for all its features and I think -let me know if you don't agree- the "finger" icon covers pretty well the idea of the tool. Besides, that tool is a transformation tool, not a drawing tool, and the current icon is so abstract that may be interpreted as a shape tool. Another icon I didn't touch was the connector tool. Which python

Hi, all. I found a small problem in build.xml that broke the build. In the "cxxtest" target, the path of the python executable was set to /target/python/python.exe . The problem with that is that the python you want at build time is the one that is native on your build machine. So on Linux, it would be /usr/bin/python or whatever. For win32/Mingw native builds, it would be preferable to add ${devlibs}/python to the PATH in mingwenv.bat rather than to explicitly invoke the one in /target/. Just "python" should be correct. Can someome please commit this? I don't want to commit the cross-compile version and break native/mingw. bob

Some have single black oultine, others have a second inset line (tweak took), others have no outline (gradient tool), others have multiple outlines (zoom tool). The black outline ends up disappearing in black/dark themes, so it's not usable without a light outline for strokes (bezier and freehand drawing tools). The oficial icon lacks consistency. It looks unfinished because too much icons look too different in style than the rest. If somebody takes the current oficial set and makes it more normalized, I bet that people who want Tangos won't be so against the current set. I'm not a Tango zealot. I find it better than the current set and I have my arguments to think that it would be better to put them as default. But i'm not against improving the current one, at all. Gez

Trouble in debug inkscape on MacOSX

Hi everyone, I am student and I am looking for a way to debug inkscape, I have followed the instructions of the Debugging Tips for OS X and the CompilingMacOsX. The compilation works, I execute this line "Inkscape.app/Contents/MacOS/inkscape" every things is right but when I try to put a breakpoint in a source file like in main.cpp, gdb display that: No source file named main.cpp. Make breakpoint pending on future shared library load? (y or [n]) I have try to change the source directory, with the command directory [path] but nothing change. I don't know what can I do to solve my problem. I am working on MacOS 10.5. Both look childish. That's because of the colors. Now both look like a plastic children toy :) I have to admit that that's an opinion based on the current trends, not in an usability test. Of course different colors are easier to identify, but now the trend for design applications is to use desaturated interfases and icons. A multi-color icon theme looks cheap. Not because it is cheap, but it's something similar than when you watch an original Star Trek episode: all that lights and sounds looked high tech back on its days, but now they look old. (this metaphore is appliable to Knight Rider episodes too :-) But, apart of the colors, the current set lacks sistematization. sorted LPE list

Hi all, I just committed code that should sort the LPE list alphabetically. I have not tested it for other languages other than English. So hope this works for Japanese too for example... Since I programmed it in a general function, more enumerations should be sorted now. I hope that is not a problem. (for example filter combo boxes should be sorted now) Cheers, Johan

How to handle invalid input files

Hello all, there is this bug report about inkscape crash on invalid svg input file: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/320987 The question here: Is there any standardized method how to handle invalid input files? eg show an error dialog or show an additional message line? Right now there is no message at all. The user does not get informed if inkscape can not render correctly. Even the user can corrupt the svg by typing some nonsense data in the xml editor. The single shades thing was a suggestion based on how the other applications implemented their icons and on the idea that primitives are sort of "blank" objects, not something with a pre-defined style. Of course the rapid identification of the icons is a valid argument in favour of the colored icons. But I think that when it comes to frequent use items as toolbar icons users tend to memorize the position of the icon more than its shape or color. But there's a proposal to replace a set with a lot of problems for a complete, stylized and systematized set. The current Tango set has coherence. The current default set has a lot of style problems (some have chiseled look, some don't, some have saturated colors, some don't, some have outlines, some don't, there isn't apparently a color palette or some guides about how to combine the colors). It's functional, but it has a lot of problems. And fixing all those problems would require an incredible amount of work, a work that has already been done in the Tango set. You may dislike the Tango set, but you can't deny that the current state is more streamlined and look more polished if you put two screenshots together. My suggestion was to put Tango as default just to see the users reaction. As a test. Another solution would be to add a GUI for selecting different themes present in the icons folder. But I still think that a finished set is better for the default look. Gez.

Tango icons as default set.

Since the Tango icon set for inkscape seems to be pretty complete and revised, I'd like to propose making it the default set in SVN (of course mantaining the current set as an alternative for people who preferes it). I know it is already possible to test the set easily, but I think that making it the default set will force users (of the development versions) to test it and will be a good opportunity to see if the general consensus is to leave it or roll back to the current set. It may be helpful to discover some bugs, too. What do you think? I haven't commit rights to do the change myself, so i'd like to ask someone who do, to apply the change if there are no objections.

Interactive extensions? (Scripting console)

Glimmer Labs has been designing an interactive scripting console designed to provide a consistent UI for multiple languages and multiple programs called MediaScript. Currently it works standalone or as a GIMP plugin and handles several dialects of Scheme and soon will have python support. MediaScript is written in C using the GTK toolkit and will eventually be multi-platform as well. Unlike our previous scheme scripting console for Inkscape, MediaScript is a fully-featured editor with tabs, indentation, highlighting and more. (Apologies for the lack of communication about the cessation of work on SchemeInk and the development of it's successor, MediaScript.) I was looking for ways to add support for scripting Inkscape but I have not found a way to do so interactively. That is, all of the support for scripting seems to be a one time interaction, either through the command line or through menu items that call an outside program and pass it some information. Is there any API (similar to libgimp) that would be more suitable for this purpose? Is there is an incomplete system being developed I may be able to devote some time to, rather than hacking out a workaround? I remember hearing about some work that Bob Jamison was doing in this area and seeing some code stubs but I can't seem to find anything about it in the current code. Inkscape promotion in Colombia

Hi there! I apologize for using this list, found it most related to current topic. I've got a proposal for you. Here in Colombia there is the SENA<http://www.sena.edu.co/portal>, a government service for training people -mostly youth and low income- in several trades by technical degrees and courses, graphic design among those. As far as I know, they've been using Corel and traditionals so I want to introduce Inkscape to them. I've found someone who can help pushing into the SENA office here in Cartagena<http://www.flickr.com/photos/mariedoucet/sets/72157611795508388/>. A first step would be to prepare an introduction material for this person, something she finds atractive and digestible (bear in mind she's a bureaucrat). I think it would be of great help, given that SENA targets people who can't afford licensed programs, as well as a window for Inkscape with a big chance of national coverage. Would you be interested? Clamwin is flagging the 0.46 installer as infected....

Hi Guys, a user on the inkscapeforum has reported that clamwin is finding Trojan.Downloader-65039 in the 0.46 installer from sourceforge. I downloaded and installed clamwin and used it to check a fresh download and can confirm it flagging it. Any suggestions on what to do with it? Cheers John

Hi all, I am very sorry that I have been extremely busy with the day job since Thanksgiving (last Thurs in Nov, for you heathens (j/k) :-) ) I am going to put some text on the wiki how to build libs on win32/mingw for the bundle. It's actually quite easy. I'll start putting info on the site this weekend. But in the meantime, if you want to be able to add libs to the bundle (or build Gtk how Tor Lillqvist does it) you should download MSYS in the meantime. Several people have been trying to contact me about rebuilding Boehm-GC with a different option. I received your emails... sorry I was away at the time. This works for me, but since I rarely build for Windows I wanted to alert others in case this may turn problematic: cxxtests use python, but they assume there's a python executable in the path, which may not work for everyone, so I switched that to use ${devlibs}/python/python.exe -- bulia byak Inkscape. Input Devices cleanup

I just noticed that we have two "input devices" commands in File menu. Please whoever did this, decide which one we will use and delete the other! In general, I would propose a "bus tomorrow" rule as a general guideline for committing stuff to our SVN: Before committing, imagine you are hit by bus tomorrow and cannot continue your work. Is your work so far still better off committed? That is, please do not willfully introduce duplication in the code and especially in the UI unless this solves some problems for the user (not you). What you commit must not be perfect and complete (nothing is ever perfect or complete), but it must be immediately useful for something and must not introduce confusion for the user. An exception can be made when your commit does not change the UI; committing unused code is still bad but can be tolerated so long as it's hidden. But two same-purpose commands in the menu or two indistinguishable LPEs are not acceptable in any case. Either we do the switch or we do not. If you expect users to give you feedback after comparing the two commands, forget it. People are too busy to bother. If not ready, do not commit; if ready, just make the switch, as early in the release cycle as possible, and be ready to answer angry emails :) -- bulia byak Inkscape. Hi all, I am very interested as well in getting JavaFX 1.0 support ready for Inkscape. I 've spent last holiday time to play with previous version and made some developments for javafx-out.cpp, javafx-out.h. I had no previous experience with inkscape, but I pretend to support the following features... - JavaFX 1.0 syntax - gradients with some limitations (bugs) in radial gradient support - gaussian blur - images - texts I tested everything under openSUSE 11.1 (x86). Of course, I am using netbeans 6.5 with Mac version of JavaFX 1.0 :) I've checked my updates against some known examples I found on the web. The "crash on start" bug seems to crash inkscape right AFTER calling (and exiting) the first idle loop. I haven't looked deeper into this, but from what I'm seeing I'm guessing there is some memory corruption/initialization issue. This could also explain the different behaviour on different platforms.

Mac Build

Hey, my newest build is now available here: http://rapidshare.com/files/184307760/Inkscape.dmg It's bigger than the previous ones cause this time I included all the python stuff. I also ditched the launcher. Because the launcher install script also compiled/installed the clearlooks theme, the theme is not included for now. But this should be easy to re-add. I'm not really sure if this fixes anything, but I'd like everyone who can to try it, and maybe post the error logs. Thanks.

interactivity-related new feature

I have just added event attributes (onclick, onmouseover, etc) to the object properties dialog. it is working nice for Inkscape SVG but not for Plain SVG. how do I preserve these attributes in plain SVG also? Also I am unsure about the usage of onload attribute but I have put it there since it is defined in the spec. JucaBlues commit log: added interactivity attributes to the object properties dialog. If you want to test it, create a new document, draw something, select it, ctrl+shift+O, expand the Interactivity expander and set: onclick to window.location="http://xkcd.com" onmouseover to this.style.cursor="pointer" Save as Inkscape SVG (currently not working for Plain SVG) then open this SVG file in Firefox to see the result.

Error "Too many heap sections" on Windows

Hello, I encounter serious problems running inkscape with larger files, or using inkscape to build OpenStreetMap binaries. When the files become to large, I get the error message "Too many heap sections" and inkscape exits. There is a way to fix this, I found this: http://osdir.com/ml/programming.garbage-collection.boehmgc/2006-01/msg00006… And there is already a bug against inkscape: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/168914 Now I wanted to compile my own binary on windows, using the instructions in the Wiki. But the (usually helpful) devlibs already contain libgc.a, and I found no docs how to create this file :( I wanted to create libgc with the LARGE_CONFIG parameter in the makefile, and then build inkscape with this new libgc to check if the problem is gone ... Can anyone help me to do this, or point me to the appropriate docs? potracelib.cpp breaking svn since r20512(?)

Hi Folks, I'm trying to build inkscape on debian(sid) from the svn trunk - it fails with the error detailed below[1]: The last time that potracelib.cpp was touched was r20512: Revision: 20512 http://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/inkscape/?rev=20512&view=rev Author: tweenk Date: 2009-01-13 02:27:04 +0000 (Tue, 13 Jan 2009) Log Message: ----------- Improved version reporting. Add SVN revision and custom status to version string on Linux. ... inkscape/trunk/src/trace/potrace/potracelib.cpp ... That was over 2 days ago now, so I'm assuming others will be having the same issue - Am I missing something obvious wrong with my build process or is it broken? I made these mockups some time ago (sorry the spanglish :) http://www.ohweb.com.ar/screenshots/Inkscape My idea was to define the profiles and rendering intents for soft proofing in a per document basis. When I showed JonCruz the mockups, he explained to me that each graphic element in an SVG document can have its own profile, and gave me some reasons of why that dialog was better (which I didn't understand very well at the time and I can't remember now). I don't know any possible scenario where one could need different profiles in the same document, but I guess there is one (I'd really appreciate if someone explains it). When I worked with proprietary packages I only needed an RGB and CMYK profile for the document, and conversion between RGB and CMYK where performed considering those profiles. Maybe I'm missing some other usage cases that may need another combination. Gez

Extension system

Migrating to GIO for file handling means modifying the extension system rather extensively, so I think it might be worth refactoring it as well, keeping compatibility with existing extensions. Currently there is a class for every type of extension, but they don't define much - everything of substance is handled by the "implementation" class which contains methods for everything. A subclass of it is mandatory for every extension. I understand the reason for this was to support XSLT and script extensions transparently, but I don't think this is the proper way to do it. Since each extension only provides one function (either an effect, or an input filter, etc. but not more than one of those types at a time) the proper inheritance would be e.g.: Extension -> Output -> XsltOutput Extension -> Effect -> ScriptEffect Extension -> Input -> SvgzInput If there are common methods among XSLT or scripted extensions, those could be put in a separate class from which all other extensions implemented in this way derive (multiple inheritance). This wouldn't preclude putting more than one function/effect in the .inx file, since more than one object could be created for a given .inx file by the manager. There should also be a proper manager object, instead of some things being done via Extension::DB (which BTW is not a singleton but a statically constructed object) and some via global functions. GIO would be used in input and output extensions - parameters to save() and load() would be GInputStreams or GOutputStreams instead of filenames. This way extensions could save to memory and to remote locations without any special handling in the extensions themselves. Do you have any other ideas for improvements or changes? Hi, spiro mode in freehand pen tool does not make sense. I'd suggest to remove the button. Even for bezier tool the spiro mode is not that useful, as you don't see the spiro while drawing (which would be nice indeed). But since you still draw beziers and spiro just gets applied _after_ path finishing, you could likewise apply it via the path effects dialog. Thomas

Disable the snapping toolbar

I never use snapping, and this toolbar takes up lots of space (which I have in very short supply on a 1024x768 display)! Please add a way to turn it off ASAP. I haven't noticed any in the preferences. It would be best if right-clicking it brought up an option to disable the toolbar. I've had a quick look at Inkscape's dll imports using dependency viewer, and it looks like it imports libpoppler3 about a dozen times or so... Any idea why it behaves like this? It might not directly give problems, but it seems a bit odd nonetheless.

New Mac Build(s)

Hey, I offered to do some mac builds on a more or less regular basis. I got native to build (but could build x11 too), and now I'm in the process of packaging it (there are still some issues with the app bundle script) I hope to resolve these tomorrow, or maybe write my own, simple script if that doesn't work. So anyway on irc verbalshadow just told me to say hi to the list and that eventual problems / upload possibilities would/could be handled here better. I'll continue with the packaging tomorrow cause it's going to be 5 am soonish, but currently I have the following issues if anyone has a quick thought on one of those. I was under the impression I could use osx-app.sh for native packaging too, but so far: (note: in the paths below /opt/local/ is the macports install path passed to "osx-app.sh" with --libraries) /opt/local/etc/pango/pangox.aliases is not in my macports install (which it tries to copy) so is this a file specific to x11 pango (pango was installed with macports using +no_x11 ofc) Also the script is looking for: /opt/local/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.0.dylib /opt/local/lib/libgdk-x11-2.0.0.dylib Only in a native version those would have to be: /opt/local/lib/libgtk-quartz-2.0.0.dylib /opt/local/lib/libgdk-quartz-2.0.0.dylib And so far I'm not quite sure how it gets the impression that it needs the x11 version, at first I thought it was hardcoded in the script, but it's not. Version reporting improvement

The CMake build system doesn't seem to be functional (link failure), so in the meantime I have an improvement to the Automake one. I added a micro-library libinkversion.a that contains only the version string. It is built from a single source file which is generated based on configure.ac $(VERSION) and SVN information (if present), and is only replaced if it changes. This way the About box always has the SVN revision, with only a relink necessary (it would have been necessary anyway in most cases). The version string looks like: 0.46+devel r20503 custom The first part is the version from configure.ac; The second is the SVN revision; the third part "custom" is only present if there are any files modified in the src/ directory with respect to the SVN repository (checked with svn status -q). Because of the way "svn info" works, the version will be wrong if you compile after commiting all changes (it won't have "custom" added even though it should). Currently I don't know how to handle this, but this shouldn't be a problem as this feature is mainly intended for users and testers. designing fonts within Inkscape

Now users can design a font within inkscape, save it and then open the SVG file in Fontforge in order to export a truetype font (or other system font formarts fontforge supports). This improves previous workflow of font design using Inkscape which involved creating one SVG for each glyph. Now user only needs to create a single SVG file containing an SVGFont. Glyph kerning settings for the font can also be defined withing Inkscape itself with live preview. The kerning management still needs some improvements but is currently functional at least. Improvements in the SVGFonts dialog: * In Global Settings tab you can define the font family name. Other attributes should be added to this tab in the future. * Glyphs tab allows the user to: ** see a list (combobox) of glyphs available in the currently selected font. ** add/remove glyphs ** edit glyph name and unicode ** set the glyph curves based on a given path (selected from canvas). Same feature for the missing glyph. * Kerning tab allows user to: ** add new kerning pairs ** adjust kerning values of selected kerning pair ** live preview while adjusting the kerning values Code refactoring: * Inner classes DocumentProperties::SignalObserver and FilterEffectsDialog::SignalObserver were duplicated code and another instance would be needed in SVGFonts dialog. So, I moved it to Inkscape::XML::SignalObserver (in helper-observer.{cpp,h}) * changed SPGlyph->glyph_name and SPGlyph->unicode from char* to Glib::ustring * added sp_remove_resource to the release method in sp-font.cpp * glyph curves used to be stored (in d attribute) and rendered upside-down. Now that bug is fixed. Sorry about this huge commit. I got one week away from the Internet during a xmas travel. SVG Fonts UI suggestions (and crash on text dropdown)

Hi Felipe! Truely, thanks for your great work on the SVG Fonts part of Inkscape. This is coming along fast and has great potential! :-) You asked for some ideas, and here's a small flood of them; I'll CC the inkscape-deve list too so there is a public record. Feel free to put any of this into the feature-tracker or whatever if its useful :-) I just built the current SVN build, if I put down some text with the text tool this non fatal error appears on sterr: ** (inkscape:1119): WARNING **: Family name Bitstream Vera Sans does not have an entry in the font lister.** And then if I select the font drop down, Inkscape aborts: ------ ERROR:xml/repr-css.cpp:52:void sp_repr_css_attr_unref(SPCSSAttr*): assertion failed: (css != NULL) Emergency save activated! Emergency save document locations: New document 1.2009_01_13_09_57_54.0.svg Emergency save completed. Inkscape will close now. If you can reproduce this crash, please file a bug at www.inkscape.org with a detailed description of the steps leading to the crash, so we can fix it. Aborted ------ This happens even if it is the very first thing I do :-( If I avoid doing this, and go to Text menu, SVG Fonts, I can see easily how to make a new font, rename it "aaaa" as a ID and as a Family Name, add a glyph, give it a Unicode character encoding by typing one, and draw a large glyph on the canvas and click "get curves from selection" to add it to the font. If I then select a text box, go to Text menu, Text and Fonts, I can't find this font in the list of fonts. :-( So that would be the #1 feature to add :-) Also if I make a textbox and write and select a few chars I added to the svgfont and then some I didn't - "abczx" - and click the "Missing Glyph: From selection" button, nothing happens. Also, it should generate the preview text only using the currently instantiated glyphs, as FontForge has implemented with public code in its font dialog, and http://adhesiontext.com/ also implements. * A 'kerning/metrics' preview, with a table of the right bearing value, the implicit total width and left bearing values, and kerning pair exceptions to these. The FontForge window allows spacing to be done interactively by dragging glyphs, which is nice. Glyph list tab: have a 3rd column listing the individual glyph width (currently can't see a way to change this at all, only the global width) Glyph list tab: Being able to load a FontForge 'encoding names' list, which is just a text file like this: 0x005F underscore 0x0060 grave 0x0061 a 0x0062 b These are created via FontForge's FontView window, Encoding menu, "Save namelist of font" item. Glyph list tab: have ability to show Unicode values in other typical formats, like 0xABCD. General: Once a set of curves have been selected and 'got' associated with a glyph, I delete them by modifying them to create the next glyph. If I then want to go back and change an existing glyph, I can see no way to reinstantiate it on the canvas and edit it. Glyphs: Having visual displays as well as the lists currently in place generally, and here a glyph palette sub-tab that is clickable instead of a list of glyph names and Unicode values; General: A new tab for metrics with interactive and tablular access to the 4 metrics values, plus kerning pair values; Preview area: Previewing its own tab, and being able to change the size of the preview text with a slider, and a number input to specify exact point size, and panning along the preview if the preview-string is long. General: When a tool palette is floated, such as the Align and Distribute palette, it has certain sections. A+D has 'align' 'distribute' 'remove overlaps' ' connector' and 'nodes'. It would be nice to be able to float these individually, but I guess this is a limit of GTK. With the SVG Font palette, there are tabs instead, and I hope it might be possible to make these 'floatable' more easily. For example the kerning tab quickly gets a long list of pairs, and if I'm working just on the metrics at the moment, I don't want to clutter up the screen with the other parts of the single huge palette at the moment. Shift + Draw Improvement

Hello ! As a designer I am a fan of the Shift + Draw feature which is so useful for example when using the Calligraphy tool. As a svg filter effects designer and because objects groups management is promised to increase in importance in this area I would suggest an improvement to it. At the moment if you select a path, press Shift and draw, when you release the Shift key the newly created path combines with the previously selected one. What I would suggest is : - if the selection is an object it would work like it does now, combining the paths ; - if the selection is a group, then when you release the Shift key your new path (or any newly created object) is simply added to this selected group. That could add a new functionality to this feature without changing anything in the UI ! kindly, ivan

I don't understand a lot about it. But I would tell you that the basic need is to separate inkscape code in at least 2 threads: one for rendering and the other one for user interface (functional parallelism), so that the user interface dont get non-responsive when the user is dealing with a drawing too complex that requires a lot of cpu power. Another thing that could be interesting is to use multithreading to speed up inkscape's algorithms. There are algorithms that we use that can be separated in various threads (data parallelism) so that multicore users will benefit from better performance (each CPU core chews a piece of the data at the same time). There is already one feature in Inkscape using data paralelism. It is the algorithm that renders the gaussian blur filtering primitive. We have used OpenMP to implement the threading of this algorithm. It detects the number of cores you have in your machine and then decides in how many threads it will split the for loops. But it wasn't coded by me. I am just telling you what I heard here on the list and on IRC. I guess we should keep this conversation on the list so that other people could help you too. More than two months of rendering tests

I've run the rendering tests for a bit more than two months now, usually roughly once a week. The results have actually been relatively stable, considering all the refactoring work going on. However, there have been a few notable changes. The good news: the number of passed tests has gone from 96 to 105 and the number of failed tests from 65 to 56. The bad news: we have three tests that crash at the moment (introduced between 2008-12-28 and 2009-01-04), and some of the changes in the number of passed tests were due to a rejudging of some the filter outputs (basically there appear to be at least one or two wrong references in the W3C test suite, and Inkscape currently simply doesn't handle the color-interpolation properties, while the actual filters are fine). You can get more details at: http://home.hccnet.nl/th.v.d.gronde/inkscape/ResultViewer.html I intend to continue running the tests as before in the near future, but am still most definitely interested in any additional help in further automating these tests and/or writing the tests. Specifically: - I currently run these tests by starting a batch file on my notebook, basically when I feel like it. A machine which could run this using a timer would be great (it would have to compile inkscape, run the tests and upload the result, possibly generating an e-mail if there are any regressions). - I currently judge any new results (so results which don't match any existing reference). Usually this is fine (most of the time there are only about 1-3 new results), but any help would be appreciated. Of course this would be a lot easier if the machine running the tests could also serve the output images (then a small on-line application could be made for letting people judge the new results). - I'd like to change the comparison algorithm used. Currently I'm using perceptualdiff, but I would like to use something which simply allows for a given error threshold (maximum error and/or rms error). Obviously extra bonus points for an algorithm that can do something sensible for comparing curves (the SVG standard says something about curves having to be within one pixel of the "true" curve or something). - Any additional tests (based on bug reports for example) would obviously be welcome. - I'd love to be able to link a bug report to a certain fail result (linking it to a file is probably not a good idea, as one test may exhibit different bugs over time). Any ideas and/or implementations for doing this would be great. Note that currently the system cannot distinguish between two fail references, so some easy way of specifying for which outputs the bug holds would be very nice.

Color-interpolation properties

I found out at least one source of differences in rendering of filters between Inkscape and Batik/W3C test suite, and that's the color-interpolation-filters property. This property determines the color space used for filter operations (color-interpolation does the same for gradients and normal compositing), and Inkscape doesn't support it at the moment. The problem is that by default color-interpolation is set to sRGB and color-interpolation-filters to linearRGB (sRGB before the gamma adjustment)... There was probably some rationale for this, but it's a pretty big nuisance, as it means that we'll probably have to convert to and from linearRGB for each application of filtering (as the conversion is very much non-linear). Also, this means that pretty much any file that uses filters should actually be rendered differently from how it is rendered now (and often quite visibly different). So it might be a good idea to do something about this ASAP, to minimize the impact. So, now my question is: What to do about this? There are a number of possibilities. First of all, Inkscape could start setting the color-interpolation-filters property to use sRGB. This would probably be a very quick "fix" and at least ensure that any new files created with Inkscape will render the same in other (compliant) viewers. Obviously this wouldn't resolve problems with current files. The main other possibility is to add support for color-interpolation-filters. Obviously this is the right thing to do in the long run, but it's also tricky to do it right. Quality (and probably performance) wise it would likely be best to allow the conversion to be part of the filter, as for example gaussian blur already uses increased precision internally and could apply the conversions with little loss in quality. However, it would obviously be much easier to simply write conversion functions and call them before and after applying any filters. And even if support for color-interpolation-filters is added, it might still make sense to set it to sRGB (or set color-interpolation to linearRGB), as letting the settings be different results in non-intuitive behaviour like having normal compositing behaving differently from the equivalent feBlend and feComposite modes.

I have added a button to the Interface page in the Inkscape preferences dialog that will remove all items of the "File -> Open Recent" menu. The code was commited in the svn revision number 20503 and the feature will probably be in the next stable release, I hope. Could anybory review my code, please? extension namespace

Hi there, is it possible to make the new namespace for inx files optional? I see no real benefit for the namespace, but it is a real drawback that all previous custom extensions will become invalid (until you add the namespace to the inx files). When we release 0.47 lots of users will be confused and will report bugs for this I guess. Thomas

Hi, Since recently we have an OBJ importer in form of an extension. IIRC there was a debate how this extension should be implemented better (real importer vs. extension). So, I've just stumbled upon http://assimp.sourceforge.net/ -- Open Asset Import Library, which is designed to help importing various 3D scene files into applications. It covers not just Obj, but also 15 more file formats, including 3D Max and the like. Could be a good GSoC2009 project for somebody, especially if importing would come with live preview :) Alexandre

That's allright now ! I did a mistake in the package source address... Inkscape 0.46 Devel runs now on my Kubuntu ! I am happy to be able to continue filters development. That will be a little bit slower because at the moment I am very busy to write a book. But these days I also tried the compatibilities between Inkscape and Fontforge and I am sure svg filters will add something new in my font creation ideas... Calling init_gtkmm_internals()

I found that to make rendering of feImage filters work correctly I have to call Gtk::Main::init_gtkmm_internals() before trying to use Gdk::Pixbuf. If this is not done it complains about not being able to wrap GdkPixbuf. With this change it suddenly seems to work just fine. However, I have no idea where it should be put. At the moment I put it in nr-filter-image.cpp (because that was were the problem was occurring), but it would probably be better to do it while starting Inkscape. However, it should also be called for Inkview. And perhaps it should be called after/before some other things? So, if someone who is a bit more familiar with GtkMM (and Inkscape's initialization) could have a look at this, that would be great. This very simply change will make feImage's with references to files work automagically :) (There are probably still a few caveats, but still.)

JavaFX 1.0 support

Hello all, I know from this blog http://silveiraneto.net/2008/11/21/inkscape-and-javafx-working-together/ that there is JavaFX support build in the latest (0.46) build. BUT the problem is, that this support is for pre-1.0 releases of JavaFX. Silveira (the guy from the blog) postet in his todo list, that the 1.0 support will come on Dec. 2nd. But there is still nothing in this direction, right? I posted a comment on his blog, asking for the progres without any reaction. Maybe somebody here can take up this topic. Recently there was a contest held on DeviantART to promote breast cancer awareness and early prevention that was sponsored by DeviantART, MGM (yes, the studio), and the Susan G. Inkscape release schedule and project items

Hey all, First, an official Happy New Year to you all! I'm breaking down this email into a few sections below. Releases: A newer release of Inkscape will be going into the next distro release cycle. Whether this is 0.46.1 or 0.47 is what needs to be determined. I know that with at least a handful of us, there is a great desire to make it 0.47. However, this may not be feasible (or preferable) for any number of reasons. A vote is definitely in order for this. We should have some sort of brief discussion about what are the most compelling reasons to either make it 0.47 or not 0.47. (I am aware that 0.46.1 has been discussed before, I've unfortunately had health issues preventing me from actively working on it, but with my current doctor downtime, should be doable) Build Systems: Discussion of the possibility of switching build systems to cmake or btool has resurfaced again recently. It seems like the obvious goals should be that we use one build system on all platforms and it be something that is maintainable by multiple individuals. From my understanding all three build systems in the mix are crossplatform. Is there an updated comparison list of the benefits and drawbacks of each? Personal experiences? Given that I almost exclusively build on linux these days, it doesn't impact me greatly and I don't really have a preference. Version Control: In the past we also discussed potentially switching to a dvcs such as git or bzr. I'm pretty sure we all know the benefits of using a dvcs, and it seems (I may be wrong) that a modern dvcs is a little friendlier with tags and branches (which would be nice to use more in the future). We have a handful of people who I know are working with bzr on a regular basis, would anyone like to chime in on if it seems like a good "successor" to svn for our project and if it would be a worthwhile switch? Bryce, Ted, Mental, Kees? Anyone think git would be a better choice? Future Releases: After this extremely long development cycle, and the amount of future refactoring we're still looking to do, I think we need a new stable/devel branching strategy for the future. Or at the very least, a bleeding edge branch for GSoCers and the like in addition to main devel. Also, it would be great to have regular releases that tie into the distro release cycles (with minimal benefit of easy PR). Anyone else care to chime in? That's all for now... I think the next release should be the top priority to vote on and discuss now, because if people want it to be 0.47, we need to get crackin'. Cheers, Josh

I would like to be able to add svg view tags like <view id="myview" viewBox="34 38 92 99"> </view> and have the bounds of the viewbox be associated with a rectangle. Ideally it would be bound to the rectangle so that editing the rectangle size, shape or position would modify the view. The purpose is to allow me to link between SVG diagrams in a useful way. Is this supported? Is anyone working on it already? If not and I can find the time to implement it, would it be a useful contribution? Any suggestions or comments are welcome (remember that I have not yet seen the code base). - Jody

So I've just taken a look at http://inkscape.org/doc/devdocs.php and I have several questions: 1. Do you find this information overall sufficient? 2. Last changes to http://inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/DeveloperManual date back to February 2007. Would anyone mind having a look and saying whether something needs changes? (btw, our wiki outputs errors again) 3. Does the flowchart at http://inkscape.org/doc/devdocs.php really reflect current state of source code? 4. Same question about class hierarchy image. Hi all, I am working on some testsuite fails, and am now stuck on painting-marker-02-f.svg. Apparently, the stroke thickness of the markers should be inherited from the path they are on. This does not work in Inkscape. How should this inheritence be done? (is there an example of how this is usually done in inkscape?) Thanks, Johan

using inkscape -> plotters in windows...

Hi... First, how do you people do this? Window drivers are a nightmare! For instance, where do they start and where do applications end? People are talking about HPGL, SVG ... I just when round and round w/the Graphtec drivers for their C200-20 and C100-20 plotters. I am convinced they not only control the plotters but also translate depending on the application. That is, I have been told, that printing from Word using the graphics found in the Word's WordArt feature can actually cut on a Graphtec Craftrobo. How would this be possible unless the driver were also translating the output of the Word application. Guess I'm really asking, in windows, using inkscape, is the accepted "go-between" format between application and drivers PostScript? So, if anyone dares to write a windows driver, they can at least count on that much? Also, I understand that the "pipe the output feature" of inkscape was recently broken (during a revamping). Is that true? Has it been fixed? ...thanks

CMake status

This was raised in another thread, but I think this issue is fairly important - what is the status of CMake? Having three parallel build systems (homebrew buildtool, autotools and CMake) is at least awkward. I understand that migrating to CMake would allow us to remove the Windows build system. On the other hand, figuring out how to compile Inkscape on Windows using MinGW and MSYS would do the same. I'm going to take a random stab in the air and say we are about 70-75% complete with the Conversion to 2Geom. Hello all, I am trying to extend the preferences by an /i18n/language entry in order to switch the user-interface language by inkscape preference settings. But using the svn devel it does not load /save the user default preferences in the /home/user/.inkscape directory .!? When I delete the .inkscape directory I expect that inkscape recreate the whole structure from scratch. But this is not the case. The version 0.46 does so. Any thoughts ? Adib. ---

Hello, I try to write a python script that help drawing diagrams (i.e. syntax diagrams). A node in this typ of diagram, is a rectangle with rounded edges and a centered text caption in it. In the script, I need the bounding box of the text, for the calculation of the correct node rectangle size, to hold the whole text in it. But how can I get the bounding box? SVG Fonts and PDF import

I understand that there's now some support for SVG Fonts thanks to Felipe Sanches' GSoC project. I would be great if the people responsible for the PDF import plugin added support for PDFs with embedded fonts (i.e. different than those installed in the system). This way I could open LaTeX documents in Inkscape without text breakage. Also of use would be an export option that embeds all fonts in the SVG (with a checkbox specifying whether to embed entire fonts or the subsets used in the document), so that fancy text could remain editable in portable documents. Crash in console mode resulting from rev. 20388

Inkscape suddenly crashes for me when using the command line export functionality (in some cases at least). It seems to crash in SPDesktop::doc2dt, probably due to a null-pointer dereference. This function is called from sp_item_i2d_affine now, since rev. 20388. And this was also one of the few revisions since I last updated, so it could very well have to do with this revision. My guess is that there simply isn't any instance of SPDesktop when Inkscape is used as a command line executable. So possibly the error isn't in sp_item_i2d_affine as such, but rather in the fact that it is being called at all. If anyone with a bit more understanding of this area of the code could have a look that would be great.

NEW: Converting text to path produces a group

Converting a text or flowed text to path (Ctrl+Shift+C) now produces a group of paths, one path for each glyph of text, instead of a single monolithic path as before. Apart from easier manipulation, an additional advantage is that if your text contained styled spans (i.e. fragments with different color, opacity, or other properties), these styles will be preserved by the corresponding glyph paths after converting to paths. -- bulia byak Inkscape. Grid snapping do not work anymore

Hi, In rev 20168, grid snapping was working correctly, because when I was drawing a new polygon, new points where added at lines intersections of a axonometric or a rectangular grid. But it is not working anymore in rev 20383 (maybe corrupted in previous revisions) the snapping only occured on grid lines, not points. Maybe an option should be added in the "Snap to grid" section of the Snap tab with two checkboxes: - Snap to grid lines - Snap to grid points And when the two are checked the snapping power of grid points should be increase.

My fault - I used graphics-magick-compat-dev instead of image-magick-dev. It works now. Another question: What about cmake? It does not seem to work. Is there no support for cmake as of now? Component transfer W3C SVG test suite reference wrong as well?

I had a good look at the filters-comptrans-01-b test, and it appears that the W3C's reference image is wrong for this test as well (earlier I found the same for their Gaussian blur reference image). I have no idea what the problem is and whether or not the reference is indeed wrong or that it is some weird color space issue or something, but for the moment I'm assuming that Inkscape's output is right. I again filed an issue in the W3C issue tracker.

"Shape" suggestion: draw simple path when there's nothing on the clipboard

Right now, when you have Shape: Clipboard enabled, but nothing on the Clipboard, then you literally draw a blank. It can be very confusing upon start-up, especially since the warning message isn't in a very visible position. Users are bound to get confused if they're unfamiliar with the Shape feature, I thought there was something wrong with my development build at fist. Here's a rather simple solution: when there's nothing on the Clipboard, then have a default where the resulting path is a normal path with no shape applied. Problem solved. The warning message (Nothing on the Clipboard) can still be displayed.

rendering performance regression

I see a significant regression in rendering speed for some days now. I have build backups from Nov 07 and Dec 08, when I open the same file, the newer build needs approximately 4 times more time to display the file, zoom, scroll etc. than the older build. This makes editing of large files almost impossible. Operations like selecting or moving items on canvas likewise behave very slow. What could be the reason for this? Any ideas? Thomas

Gradients disappearing

Running the rendering tests again this week I encountered a regression in the rendering of filters-comptran-01-b (from W3C SVG test suite). This test contains four rectangles with the same gradient, one without any filter and three with three different component transfer filters. Last week the four rectangles in the filters-comptran-01 test were still rendered with the wrong colours, but they were rendered. This week two of them are not rendered anymore... As far as I can tell the component transfer code wasn't touched during that time though, so I have absolutely no idea why this suddenly happens. Now the question is, should a bug be reported? And if so, what is this the actual bug? As far as I can tell feComponentTransfer isn't supposed to work anyway, so filing a bug seems a bit pointless at this point. However, as it doesn't appear to be related to a change to the component transfer filter it might actually be an unrelated bug in disguise. So, any ideas on what could be causing this?

Sudden surge of regressions/changes in (filter) rendering

I just ran the rendering tests again, and compared to last week there were suddenly 16(!) new results. I've had a quick look at some of them and they all seem to be regressions related to filter rendering (affecting quite a lot of different filters). Could anyone who has touched the general filtering code in the last week please recheck their work? (I'm currently swamped with work, so I have no time to go after this myself.)

CharTypes.h et al

Hello, for the second day I'm trying to compile inkscape and growing more and more desperate. Compilation fails with: In file included from extension/internal/pdfinput/svg-builder.cpp:19: extension/internal/pdfinput/svg-builder.h:32:23: error: CharTypes.h: No such file or directory In file included from extension/internal/pdfinput/svg-builder.cpp:20: extension/internal/pdfinput/pdf-parser.h:29:24: error: goo/gtypes.h: No such file or directory extension/internal/pdfinput/pdf-parser.h:30:20: error: Object.h: No such file or directory (and ~3 more pages of induced errors). I've tried to google and stuff, but to no avail. What do I need to have installed to get those header files? (I've seen that they come with xpdf, but that's not quite it - and they don't get installed to /usr/include anyway.) So either some horrible hack is required on my part or these include files come with something very basic that is auto-assumed, and nobody bothers to check for it in ./configure. Can someone shed some light into this? Thanks, Michal

Hey people, Just a quick note: to run ./autogen.sh succesfully with latest revision, I had to update intltool to v0.40.5. This was the error I got before updating: Running intltoolize --copy --force --automake ... cp: cannot create regular file `po/Makefile.in.in': No such file or directory intltoolize: cannot copy '/usr/share/intltool/Makefile.in.in' to 'po/Makefile.in.in' Please fix the error conditions and try again. Fedora 9 is still only at v0.37.1, so I had to manually copy some files from the Fedora 10 preview release. Diederik

New snapping features

Hi all, In the latest revisions you will notice that Inkscape now has a snapping tab in the preferences dialog. It contains some non-document specific settings, such as for example the snap indicator toggle. There are some new parameters too though: 1) You can now specify the snapping delay (as promised a few weeks ago) 2) I've added a slider which controls which type of snapping Inkscape will prefer. When multiple snap solutions are found, then Inkscape can either prefer the closest transformation (when the weight-slider is set to 0; this is the old mode), or prefer the node that was initially the closest to the pointer (when the slider is set to 1). The way Inkscape calculates the preferred snap has been improved too, which should lead to more predictable snapping 3) There's a toggle to force Inkscape to only try snapping the (source) node that is closest to the mouse pointer, à la Coreldraw. When this mode is enabled a snap indicator will shortly be shown at that node. This will give you maximum control of the snapping which is useful for more complex drawings with many nodes. Parsing a command line to argc/argv

I'm getting back to work on the GIO transition. The first thing that must change in order to move to GIO is the parameter parsing (to open files it's best to use Gio::File::create_for_commandline_arg, and for this filenames in filename encoding are needed). However, this will interfere with the shell mode. I don't think this is an useful feature - an embedded scripting language would be a lot better - but probably there's someone who relies on it, so it should be preserved until there's a replacement. I would like to reuse the option parser from the main application, but then I have to parse the command line into argc and argv myself, because that's what g_option_context_parse accepts. Does anyone know whether there's an "officially blessed" way of parsing a command line into argc and argv? "make check" doesn't run unit tests

This wiki page: http://www.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/TestingInkscape says that "make check" runs the unit tests written in the CxxTest framework on Unix systems, but in fact it doesn't. The only tests which are actually run are the ones using the old homegrown utest framework residing in src/utest. I'm no expert on Inkscape's build process so I'm not sure how to fix this. Bug in SVN with certain HID devices

Hello Everyone, I did an SVN yesterday and after compiling I got this error: ERROR:preferences.cpp:488:Inkscape::XML::Node* Inkscape::Preferences::_getNode(const Glib::ustring&, bool): assertion failed: (pref_key.find('.') == Glib::ustring::npos) After further investigation, I realized that the pref_key my program was crashing on was that of my keyboard/mouse: Liteon Microsoft Wireless Reciever 700 v2*.*0 When I removed the assert from the code the program started properly. I believe the assert is checking to make sure that the first instance of a period is coming at the end of the pref_key, or that one does not exist? Either way, why are you checking for this? Script to export image

I have to thank all of you guys. You helped me a lot. Mr. Bulia Byak, Jamie Kimberley, John Bintz and others. You are all right. The Inkscape is a great software but not for what I was trying to do. The ideas that Kimberley and Bintz gave to me was perfect. ImageMagick was the right answer to my problem. I did this: - I exported the entire SVG to a single PNG file. That gave me a file with a bit more than 19MB. - I converted the PNG in a MPC file with ImageMagick, after a long and very careful reading of its documentation. This gave me a file almost 4GB long. - Then I made a batch script, much more simpler than the other one, to export all the 29,232 parts that I needed. Amaizing, it took less than 4 hours to export all parts. I loved ImageMagick and all its powerful. I already known it, but never occurs to me that it could do the job. Thank you again, guys. Script to export images

Hi, All. I already wrote this question in the inkscape-user list but no one came to me with a good solution. My problem is that I have a SVG image too big. In fact is more than one. They are five SVG files with size of 20880 pixels width by 37800 pixels height. I have to export PNG files of slices that must have 180 pixels width by 150 pixels height. I know that I could do this creating an array of squares in a separate layer and, using the batch export, export every peace. The problem is that I need that every PNG file export must have an specific name. They must have the theis X and Y positon from where they come from in the original image. For example, if one PNG came from a peace at 0:0:180:150 it must be named "0x0.png". The peace that came from 180:150:360:300 must be named "180x150.png". I already made a batch file (I am using Windows XP with Inkscape 0.46) but it is too slow. I left it running almost 16 hours strait and it didn't finished the first file yet. There is someone that can help me with that? Is really important. Thanks a lot. Bug in W3C test suite?

Currently Inkscape renders the W3C Gaussian blur test (filters-gauss-01-b.svg) visibly different from the reference PNG provided by the W3C. However, from what I can tell it might not be Inkscape's problem... (Or is it?) This spreadsheet: http://home.hccnet.nl/th.v.d.gronde/filters-gauss-01-b.ods shows some graphs of data extracted from the reference PNG and Inkscape's output, as well as some artificially created data. The top and bottom graphs correspond to lines extracted at y=220 and y=320, and they show that Inkscape's output matches pretty well to the reference PNG. I've only included the green channel of the reference PNG, but the other channels match as well. The interesting bit is the green channel in the middle graph (corresponding to y=270). I've applied for a bugzilla account at the W3C to file a bug, but in the mean time, did I make some mistake in analyzing this or is this really a bug in the W3C test? Also, what on earth could cause such a weird mismatch? And in an interesting twist, Batik gives more or less the same result as the W3C reference PNG. I've had a short look at their blur code, but without spending hours (if not days) to delve deep into their code I really can't tell what causes the difference in behaviour. BTW, the strange fluctuations in the left part of the bottom graph are due to text appearing the reference PNG (which has been removed from Inkscape's tests to make it easier to compare images automatically).

handling of bugfixes for particular cases

Hi, I just fixed bug #190424 and #168777. These are about incorrect font size when creating text in a document, that has a viewBox attribute. My patch does not fix the lack of viewBox handling in general, but only for text tool. Actually Inkscape needs a proper generic implementation of viewBox handling I think, but this is probably a larger piece of work. I'd like to know how our policy is for such cases. Go for the easy fix now, and revert it once the proper general fix is done? Or postpone the whole issue until it is properly fixed? Thomas

As of rev 20252, Inkscape on Windows won't start claiming it needs mingwm10.dll. I found it in MinGW and copied it to the build dir, then it worked fine. Hi, Sometimes a question about CDR importing back to the inkscape-brasil maling-list and the problem is the uniconversor name variation. To support this variation i put a test on uniconv-ext.py . Inkscape does not render Khmer script correctly

Hello List members, I have a problem with Inkscape in Ms Windows. but in Linux (openSUSE 11.0) it renders Khmer script correctly. I have to say that I like the Recent Documents from Inkscape being listed in my Gnome recent documents list. However, what I didn't expect was that when I cleared Gnome's recent documents that it would also clear the list within Inkscape. Is there any potential way for us to work around this or does this come with getting the integration? Cheers, Josh

Changing the gtk2 theme for a self-built OSX nightly

Hi, I followed the advice from http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CompilingMacOsX and compiled the latest revision for OS X (downloaded yesterday). As far as I can tell it's working well. It's just that my self-built version uses a somewhat strange gtk theme where only the sliders are looking Aqua-like. The latest available prepackaged nightly build for OSX uses a theme that is much nicer and I would like to change the theme for my self-built version to look like the prepackaged build. Is there some way to do that? Automated transparency removal for EPS export

Dear Inkscape Developers, I use Inkscape regularly to edit figures for scientific publications. Because I like to use transparency effects but many journals only accept EPS files for publication, I ran into the well-known "transparency and PostScript export" problem. First I used to remove the transparency by hand as described in the "Tips and Tricks" tutorial [1]. This has been a hard job and sometimes it is virtually impossible. To facilitate this task I have automated this workaround (removing transparency by adding shapes covering the overlapping areas with the corresponding mixed color). So far I am quite happy with that solution, although it obviously does not work for gradients etc., and I would like to include it in the official Inkscape version. In this regard I have a few questions to you: 1) Are there any general objections to add this code to Inkscape? 2) Where would you place this function in the UI? (For my personal use I have added the item "Remove Transparency" to the Path menu, which probably is not appropriate.) Related to this question is the question how to deal with the limited ability of this approach in order to not confuse or annoy users (e.g. when they use it with gradients). 3) Where would you ideally add the code for this feature? Currently I have added four functions sp_remove_transparency*() to splivarot.cpp. I chose this file because of the relation to sp_selected_path_intersect(). Also, I have copied some code from sp_selected_path_boolop() to get the intersection shapes and I suggest to put the common code in a more generic boolean operation function in order to avoid duplicate code. Found a bug in Inkscape 0.46

Hey, Attached file demonstrates a bug in Inkscape 0.46. The bug is related to stitch sub-paths and the behavior is Inkscape crashes. The instructions on how to simulate the bug are in the file. Basically I combined a four-node square path with a two-node line path and stitched them together. When the left-hand node in the line path is deleted Inkscape gives a message that it has crashed and when I press ok it closes. Deleting the right-hand node works fine. I've discovered Inkscape yesterday and I've been playing with it. I absolutely love it and I can't wait to get my hands on the 0.47 release. I'm not into graphical design and I don't consider myself talented in drawing or any art form for that matter. Yet with Inkscape and the fabulous screencasts and documentation I rock! I've also added two of my creations to the flickr group. Thanks for all the hard work and I'm glad I can help out. Steven

Applying the marks to the artwork area is fine, but in certain situations you need to use the paper area as a container for several originals (for instance, placing front and rear of a brochure in a same document). Of course there's an easy workaround, and it only takes to create a document sized as one of the originals and reuse the crop marks in the other, but crop marks to selection would be very useful anyway. I've just read a previous comment, and the author of the "cut marks" extension offers you to join forces and work together. Your extension looks more polished than the other, but it already has the feature I mention (using the selection's bbox as area for the crop marks). It would be nice to add that to your extension. Another interesting feature would be using guides as placeholders for fold or die-punch marks. About the registration marks discussion, I also find the V shapes too exotic. Generally I only see superposed circles with crosses in C, M, Y and K channels. However, I don't see anything wrong with using both. The circles with crosses on the corners, and the V shapes on the middle. What do you think?

bzr usage

Hi all, Trying to use bzr and launchpad, I bumped into a bunch of newbies questions... (I'm not sure any of them makes sens!) Should I do bzr branch lp:inkscape like indicated on our inkscape launchpad web page? if yes, how are sourceforge svn rep and lp:inkscape related? lp:inkscape does not look like being uptodate. How do I commit to svn? (more over, this seems to break buildtool under windows, because of svninfo... but this is another story) Should I use bzr-svn to checkout the sourceforge svn repository? hm. It's extremely slow. Can I still register my branches in launchpad then? Am I missing a straight way to use my local svn tree to work with bzr?... Anyway, some basic guide lines for newbies and ignorant people like me would be very helpfull ;-) Thanks. jfb.

A near to generic CMYK profile

Hi all, I and Nicolas will join our work about printing marks, but the printing marks need to be printed with pure CMYK color components. And specially the register mark must be printed with all 4 colors to test the alignment of the separated printing. So, the Inkscape already suport ICC profiles and soon it will export PS and PDF with color profiles. The printing marks will be ready for this, but to work we need a ICC file to link in the SVG. Someone could propose a near to generic CMYK ICC profile? I only find ICC files about specific printers, and is writen in some places that "is no generic CMYK profiles"(???). git-svn trouble / lost revisions?

Hi, I recently tried to update my git-svn repository for Inkscape via "git-svn rebase" as usual. Another strange thing: I downloaded a fresh checkout using svn only (not git-svn), and the revision numbers in the log jump from #19921 directly to #20226, although clearly there were other commits in between. The log entry for #20226 says something about merging a branch. Could it be that accidentally some revisions got lost in the process and that this is also what confuses git-svn? How can it be fixed? Multithreaded blur using OpenMP

Using GCC's support of OpenMP (now also in MingW!) I had a stab at making the outer loop of blurring parallel (the loops are typical DSP loops and shouldn't even throw an exception, so it should be perfectly safe). On my dual-core system blurring (a large image) is approximately twice as fast, so it seems to scale really well. As I don't have access to a Linux system at the moment I haven't modified the Makefiles to add support, but it shouldn't be too difficult (see the changes to build.xml). Also, I've made it write a log to be able to analyze the performance, but it uses Win32 specific functions for timing. So, if anyone would like to have a go at making it work on Linux and/or testing it that would be great :) The number of threads defaults to whatever omp_get_num_procs() returns, but on my system this doesn't work... So to use it, set the number of threads in the preferences, using: <group id="threading" numthreads="1" /> in the "options" group (so it's /options/threading/numthreads). Obviously this is not the most efficient way to do this, as new threads are created for each blur. But so far the overhead doesn't appear to be too bad, compared with the actual blurring operation. And using OpenMP the impact on the code is minimal, I only had to put two #pragma's before the blur loops, allocate the temporary data it needs for all threads and add some preference for the number of threads. So if this works out it might provide a relatively easy way to start making use of all these dual- and quad-core machines people have lying around doing almost nothing these days :) Patch attached, if wanted I can also provide a binary for Windows. This version writes a log file (blurlog.txt) that lists how long each blur takes. Note that inkscape also needs mingwm10.dll to run with this patch. As it isn't included with devlibs at the moment you'll have to copy it to Inkscape's directory manually (it's in the MingW bin directory). cut/crop marks extensions

Hi, Recently a Perl extension called "Cut marks" was added to SVN. I must admit I didn't have very good feelings about this, because Windows users who are majority of our user base or at least very close to it will have an extra step of installing ActivePerl to be able to use it. IMO, having several programming languages supported is fine as long as extensions work everywhere out of box. We already have functionality available on one platform and not available on the other and it probably wouldn't be wise pushing this even further. Hi all, I've just added a new lpe to fill a shape with rough hatches. It's still at an experimental state. As usual, I'm in trouble with the parameters. They are purely technical atm, i.e. they are the onesI used in the code to control the shape of the hatches. But what is technical-oriented is generally not user friendly (in particular, I was not able to supply tips for some of them). Please try it, and suggest user firendly parameters (from which the technical ones would be deduced). Ah, and yes, bending needs improvement, and growth has no effect atm... Anyway, I hope you'll like it ;-) jf.

verbs and the undo stack

I am not so sure about the mechanics of the undo stack and the meaning of verbs. I have coded an improvement to the user interface for embedding color profiles in a document and I have used the sp_document_done call. The patch is attached. Could anybody review it? It adds a "remove" context menu option in the "Embedded color profiles" box that appears in the "Color Management" tab in "document settings" dialog. Undoing and redoing works ok, but I am not sure aobut the verbs. I expected it to call the update() method onde the user press CTRL+Z or SHIFT+CTRL+Z so that my widgets would be properly updated. Craft Robo can cut directly from inkscape?

Hi... Been talking to Lucille across the pond and understand that people are cutting directly from inkscape to Craft Robo paper cutters using (I believe) the Craft Robo 5.1 software package. As I have not heard anything about this here (support for non standard Graphtec cutter protocols) I assume the Craft Robo 5.1 software package uses a Craft Robo USB driver that identifies and interprets the Post Script output (nuts, should have ask Lucille how inkscape was setup) of inkscape. Anyhow, if true, this would be great for Craft Robo users. However, I doubt that Wishblades (North American versions of Craft Robo) cutters will benefit. The old blue and new pink Wishblades identify them selves differently and have not (in the past) worked with the Craft Robo software. Doesn't seam fair as the old blue Wishblades are no longer supported by Xyron going forward into Windows Vista from what I understand. Yeah, I'm going to buy more stuff from Xyron, NOT! You can still cut from inkscape to a Wishblade but you will need to in Linux, have Python and Glade installed and use that Python script we've talked about here on this list (I'll have to look up the URL if people are interested). So, are there still people interested in porting that Python script to windows? I've tried, but haven't been able to figure out how to create a USB driver under Windows. From all that I have read, Windows is a real mess when it comes to creating USB drivers (i.e. you can find companies that will do it but they charge $1000s, ouch...)

Sorry my previous question about kiosk mode was misleading. We already have a kiosk mode (the window manager is configured to only allow the browser). I was asking what would be the best way to limit users to one directory in the Inkscape dialog boxes. We don't want them to be able to browse the file system. Thanks, Stan

Difficulties in backtracing a crash on XP

Hi, Bug 292077 is giving me quite some difficulties in pin-pointing it. It crashes Inkscape, but I can only reproduce it on Windows (not on Linux), and only when I'm _not_ running gdb. To make things worse it even requires quite some patience to reproduce it. How does one find the cause of such a bug? I've tried attaching gdb after the crash (is that possible at all?), and sprinkled around lot's of std::couts, but I didn't get any closer. I could use some pointers here :-( Apparently it only crashes when snapping is enabled, but it looks like it's not the snapping code itself that's crashing. The bug report is here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/292077 It's been around at least since v0.46, according to this report. Inkscape cannot open *.svgz (compressed Inkscape) through File -> Open (command-line works ok though)

Hi there, I noticed that Inkscape bails w/ an error message 'Failed to load the requested file <filename>.svgz' when trying to open a compressed Inkscape file through the GUI. However, it can still load the same file just fine if I pass it to inkscape through the command-line: $ # this works ok $ inkscape myfile.svgz ...when it errors out, I get the following error message on the command line: Entity: line 1: parser error : Start tag expected, '<' not found � ^ To reproduce: 1 - create a new file 2 - add a shape (I just did a simple red square) 3 - save as 'Compressed Inkscape SVG (*.svgz)' 4 - close and re-open inkscape GUI 5 - in the GUI, File -> Open <your saved file> // this will result in the error 6 - open same file through command-line // this will open ok I don't know how long this behavior has been around, I only started using compressed SVG's recently, but I see the behavior as far back as rev 20150.. I also keep rev 19967 handy (there seems to have been a performance regression since this build, when zooming in/out.. the canvas seems to refresh slower... but that's another matter altogether), and it suffers the same problem BOTH through the GUI and command-line. Sebastien: You can work with inkscape's default units (px) and export your artwork at 90dpi from the png exporter and you'll get 1:1 conversion of vector pixels to raster pixels. The same applies to the image imports, inkscape will take the real pixels and place them on the work area using 90 dpi. Of course the feature that you're proposing is interesting and would be very helpful in several situations. This has been already discussed and if I remember correcly, there is a similar suggestion in the wishlist. Could you please check in the bug tracker if it has been already reported? If not, you can create a detailed feature request. Gez.

Grid snapping slowing down operations

Hello, I'm using Inkscape grids extensively and some operations like resizing a rectangle or drawing a line using the pen tool push my CPU to 100% for 10 to 30s. The grid setup I use it the following: - Pixels - Origin: x=0.0, y=-15.0 - Spacing: x=2.0, y=2.0 - Step: 10 lines And then snapping is turned on for nodes and snaps to paths, nodes and guides with a distance of 1. I've been experiencing these slowdowns on two Ubuntu machines, and the problem still shows with the latest realase (8.10). I'm running Inkscape 0.46, built Oct 24 2008. -- Sébastien

Hello, I'm doing UI design using Inkscape and it is important for me to be able to adjust the DPI on a per-document basis. In practice, I want to be able to adjust the number of pixels per inch (or cm) so that I can make UI wireframes bigger or smaller without losing the pixel-precision. -- Sébastien

[PATCH] Fixing strings when exporting to JavaFX files

A little PR for the Inkscape Docs team: We recently got our Inkscape Manual (the fruit of our Book Sprint) put on Lulu (http://www.lulu.com/content/4617381). You've probably seen the article by the Russian on the inkscape.org which has a link - if not, check it out! The published book, while being a reasonably finished work of good quality, is not comprehensive. We would like it to be more so. Here are some things that will help us to continue with this work: 1. Sales of the current version (somewhat limited 1st EDITION!!!!) on Lulu will help us afford a future Booksprint. 2. Contributions to the manual on our Floss Manuals workspace are greatly needed. Of course, as this needs some coordination, it's best to start on the inkscape-docs list (signup at lists.sourceforge.net) to find out where to begin. 3. Magical powers to generate whatever good thing we want without much effort. If you can help with any of these things, that would be GREAT! In particular, getting word out and posting the link to the Lulu store would be of great benefit. JF

Hello, I'm trying to get my build environment up and running under Vista and am running into a compiler error: src/display/nr-svgfonts.h:37: error: 'cairo_text_cluster_flags_t' has not been declared I'm using the command-line tools and I'm building against the most recent source from SVN. I got the most recent devlibs zip and mingw from http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32libs/. Does the devlibs archive have the correct cairo includes? Thanks! pete mcquain

Smooth transitions in Bézier paths

Hi, I hope you don't mind if I increase the traffic on inkscape-devel even more ;-) At some point an idea popped up to only snap to nodes at discontinuities in paths, and not to nodes at smooth transitions from one Bézier segment to another. This is more intuitive (less "Hey, what it is Inkscape snapping to now?") and might increase performance. Problem is that in the object-snapper I only have access to SPCurve, which is a wrapper for "old-style" NArtBpath. It's easy to find out whether a point is inbetween two Bézier segments, but how do I find out if a transition is smooth? I guess that should be done by comparing the control points, or is there an easier way? With the transition to lib2geom, will the NArtBpath be deprecated in favor of the Path class? (that would make this rather exercise useless in the long run). Any pointers would be appreciated here, Diederik

Somebody undid my changes to the files in src/bind/, so I'd like to discuss the doxygen convention used for files here. I already said about this in another thread but it wasn't too visible. Even if that's the case we could put a (C) notice on the main page so that other pages are not cluttered with duplicated information. A lot random crashes in recent SVN version

Note: Subject of this mail is not a complaint. I just wanted to bring this to focus. Here's the backtrace of one that looks like snapping related. I can repeat these crashes, but it happens mostly while dragging objects around and panning using middle mouse button. BTW, Looks like one needs to press middle mouse button absolutely still for some time in order to pan around. Also doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, that's the workaround. At least here. LPE on groups with shapes

Hi all, Did group LPE ever work on shapes in a group? I.e. I have a group with stars in it, then apply bendpath on the group. The SVG is correct, but Inkscape displays the stars unbent. 2geom update: new Rect and OptRect

Hi all, I just updated 2geom in our trunk. It contains the 'new' Rect and OptRect (and Interval and OptInterval). Geom::Rect can no longer be empty. It *always* contains a rectangle. Geom::OptRect contains a rect or nothing (which means an empty rect). The same holds for Geom::Interval and Geom::OptInterval. For example, boundingbox functions return an OptRect. You have to check whether it is empty or not, before you use the values in the Rect. If you didn't and turns out the bbox is empty, Inkscape will crash :-) Note that Rect's no longer have the method 'isEmpty'. Rect's do have the 'hasZeroArea' method. If this is true, the Rect contains a single point, like a (0,0)-(0,0) rectangle. It's not empty, it contains one point (0,0). (OptRect and OptInterval have the same usage as boost::optional<Rect>) I made Inkscape compile with this update, and tried to fix cases where there was not an explicit empty check. I may have introduced/uncovered bugs, sorry for that. Let us know about what you've found. Cheers, Johan

locking objects on canvas

hello! I create many objects on canvas without using of layers. Sometimes it is impossible to get any object. Inkscape has option allows us to lock object but this is very uncomfortable. Also that doesn't enable us to unlock particular object. Have you ever thought about adding new feature - locking/unlocking object on canvas like in Corel Draw? This is very cool stuff. It doesn't exclude functionality of layers but adds possibility of creating simple things in simple way. Think about icons. Many icons are created on one layer. But managing such objects in further future is terrible. I propose to add new entry to context menu. Clicking on it will show a small padlock on object (like in Corel). I hope that isn't hard to coding but makes sense in my opinion. I also hope I made myself clear. :) cheers, Wojtek Ryrych

Hi all, Just wanted to let people know that the build needs a couple of files tweaked for it to succeed: src/ui/dialog/input.cpp src/ui/dialog/tiledialog.cpp It's minor for both. They just need the lines added: #ifdef HAVE_CONFIG_H #include "config.h" #endif I would have done it myself, but when I svn upped to see if it had been fixed yet by somebody else, I got a fresh copy of verbs.h instead. .dxf input routine

Launchpad and "Fix Committed"

The current practice is to mark bugs "fix released" in Launchpad when committing to SVN. The rationale for this (given by bulia in another thread) is that this way the "open bugs" count is more useful for the developers. I think this is an abuse of Launchpad bug tracking. IMO the rationale isn't sufficient. It creates confusion for users which re-report bugs that have been fixed in SVN, because "fix released" bugs do not show up in search results. There must be a better way of tracking how many bugs have been fixed. Currently I know about advanced search (just search for all bugs with statuses New, Triaged, Confirmed, Incomplete, In Progress) and milestones which can isolate the most important bugs. Another option is to talk to the Launchpad team to include an "Unfixed" count on the bugs page which would exclude "fix committed" bugs. This will be better than abusing the system and confusing the users in the name of seeing some number. I really prefer the previous behavior of the snapping. Now it seems to work fine, but you don't get a visual feedback of the snapping until you release the mouse button. I think that it's questionable from the usability point of view. Snapping result should be visible before you release the mouse click, because the user wants to know if the snapping was successful before that, not after. In the previous versions, the shape was atracted to the snapping point when the pointer entered in the snapping threshold, so you could easily see the end result before releasing the mouse button. Now you can't and it feels like you have no control in the process. For instance, if you need to enlarge or shrink a rectangle beyond a guide and you have the snapping on, it is possible that you get the shape snapped to the guide even if you don't want to, and you'll realize that only after you released the mouse button (thinking that the shape wouldn't snap). Besides that, there are still isues when enlarging or shrinking shapes. Some snapping settings will make almost impossible to scale a shape without being atracted to a snapping point (making it go back to the original size or disappearing). I really don't know about the snapping code (in fact, I don't know anything about code) but it "feels" like there should be a "zone" around the mouse pointer to perform the snapping (and the snapping nodes should be aligned to that zone depending on the axis of the transformation to avoid random snapping) and the snapping should be visible before releasing the mouse button. At the end of the movement, right, but not after the mouse button release. IMO, the current behavior shows some improvements but also some regressions. Just my 2 cents. Gez.

Rendering test results on-line

If you go to: http://home.hccnet.nl/th.v.d.gronde/inkscape/ResultViewer.html you will now see an up-to-date list of test results for Inkscape's rendering tests. It now contains one column, each time I run the tests a column will be added (to the left). It's still pretty bare-bones, but I hope I (or someone else) will find some time to improve it in the near future. I plan to run the tests regularly for at least the next two months or so. I have to run the tests more or less manually though (I created a batch file to automate most steps, but I still have to run the batch file manually, on my notebook...), so I'm interested in any suggestions people might have for hosting (more) fully automated tests. You don't see any test for your favorite rendering bug? No problem, if the bug is already in the bug tracker with the required test files (read on), just mail me and I'll add it. If not, create an SVG demonstrating the problem (small and simple please) and one or more of the following: - A PNG of the wrong output. - A PNG of the right output (preferably exact). - An SVG that should look exactly the same, but is rendered correctly by Inkscape. Then attach the files to the corresponding bug in the bug tracker (or create a new bug and attach the files if it isn't the tracker yet) and mail me (or anyone else who has SVN access). Of course, if you have SVN access you can add tests yourself. I have to agree with Guillermo. While reading the discussion here I was very excieted about new imporvements, but after trying it I missed old behaviour where snapping occured _while_ dragging an object, not after releasing mouse button. It feels somehow more natural to see guidelines working in real time, and in most cases works faster (no waiting for delay or clicking object again because it was not snapped or snapped to wrong guideline). An option to set snapping delay to zero would be very useful for some users... and especially for me :)

Just wondering if theres anyone out there who can confirm if the changes to the recent file list are working for them?I dont seem to have any files showing up in my list, it just always shows the no items found. 2geom SVN warning

There is a file called "!PLEASE DON'T MAKE CHANGES IN THESE FILES.README" in the 2geom directory. It says that 2geom code should be changed in 2geom SVN instead of in the Inkscape SVN, because changes will be destroyed otherwise. Is this warning still intact? Hi, I'm trying to get soft-hyphenation to work in an acceptable fashion before going into deeper details. I want te solve the following task; - In the _measureUnbrokenSpan loop (Layout-TNG-Compute.cpp) soft-hyphens are detected. It can nicely break in such situation. - Currently a soft-hypen is invisible, but clearly the position in the source stream is know. - Based on this position I want to *replace* the softhypen in this rendering run with a '-' - This might need an a priori knowledge of the '-' width Could anyone suggest how to append a Span with only a "-" or replace the soft-hyphen with a hard one in this run? NEW: Auto smooth nodes

Thanks to Thomas Holder for the patch: Auto smooth nodes: a new "auto" node type was added, similar to the one Xara Xtreme has. An auto node is a smooth node which automatically adjusts (rotates and stretches) its handles when this node or its neighbors are moved. This adjustment (same as what you get when you convert node type to Smooth, but continuous) keeps the curve at this node as smooth as possible. It feels a bit like Spiro paths; although not as smooth as a Spiro, it may often be preferable as it works without any Path Effect. Whenever you manually adjust the handles of an auto node or drag the adjacent curve, it loses its auto state and becomes smooth; for this reason, it is recommended to edit smooth nodes with the node handles hidden via a toggle button on the controls bar. Auto nodes are represented by little circles, as opposed to smooth/symmetric nodes (squares) and cusp nodes (diamonds). Inkscape and GIO

GConf integration needs some additional thought and community input before deciding whether to have it or not, so I have a question about another good technology, GIO. Milestone 0.47 in the roadmap has GTK 2.12 listed in the dependencies. GTK 2.12 in turn depends on Glib 2.16 (at least on Ubuntu Hardy), which includes GIO. In fact with the next version, GTK 2.14, the build fails if giomm-2.4 is not added to configure.ac, because gtkmm-2.4 depends on it. So it looks like everything is in place to use it. Can we start making use of GIO now, or do we have to wait some more until it's more commonplace in Linux distributions? [PATCH] Fedora MinGW cross-compiling patch, version 2

This is the second version of the patch to get Inkscape to cross-compile from Fedora MinGW. (1) I've tested that this doesn't break the build on Linux. (2) You cannot set INKSCAPE_CFLAGS in the Win32 test, because then PKG_CHECK_MODULES(INKSCAPE, ...) refuses to update this variable. Thus I introduced a separate WIN32_CFLAGS variable. (3) You need to check for fontconfig before checking for Xft. Otherwise the cross-compiler erroneously picks up the platform native version of Xft, which leads to incorrect linker flags. (4) Use g_getenv / g_setenv instead of getenv / setenv. (5) is_os_vista no longer needs to be commented out. [PATCH] Export to relative paths

Hello! I've uploaded a small patch which fixes Launchpad bugs #168715 and #171869. The patch makes Inkscape treat paths in the Bitmap Export dialog relative to the document's location rather than the current working directory. This allows the user to enter paths like "../css/bitmap.png" and have them work as expected. Help with result viewer for rendering tests appreciated

As you may have seen I put up a simple result viewer for the rendering test results. It's based on Google Web Toolkit and JSON. Both quite new to me, and there are quite some things that could be done, so if anyone is interested in helping out that would be great. Some things I'd love to have in the result viewer: - Better/clearer presentation, for example coloring the results to make it easier to locate them visually. - Some filters for showing only changed results (regressions or improvements) or only specific results (just the New results for example). - Links to the actual input/output images (and difference images?). - Perhaps group the test cases in a tree (they are already categorized to some extent). - Anything else that will make it easier to track Inkscape's quality. Also, if anyone has any other bright ideas about how to process the test result data, let's hear it. Color gestures widget idea

There was a discussion about the color gestures recently. I have an idea how to make them more usable and discoverable. The basic idea is to display a small strip with a gradient under the cursor. To understand what I mean check out any recent version of GIMP or GThumb, load up an image too big to fit in the window and see what happens when you drag on the small four-way arrow in the lower right-hand corner of the window. Instead of a thumbnail, a color gradient corresponding to the setting that is currently being adjusted would be displayed. The feature would be activated by dragging on a small widget with a two-way arrow superimposed over a color circle or a gradient. The appearance of the icon could change depending on what is adjusted (H/S/L) but that's optional. Why this idea is an imporvement over the current gesture functionality: First, it will be much easier to get the color you want quickly. Second, it will be more discoverable. Third, the widget could be reused to pop up similar icons on the canvas to allow the user to e.g. adjust the color of a gradient node (there would be something that enables them, maybe a separate tool, to minimize visual pollution). I believe the "everything on canvas" paradigm is superior to "tweak values in dialogs" and one of the things Inkscape does right, so expanding on-canvas functionality seems to be a good idea to me. [PATCH] Allow inkscape to be cross-compiled from Fedora to Windows using MinGW

Hi, I'm doing the Fedora MinGW project[1], where we are building up a cross-compiler and comprehensive set of libraries so we can build Windows software from Fedora. Mostly inkscape "just works". Install the dependent libraries such as gtkmm etc. from our yum repo[2], then: PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/i686-pc-mingw32/sys-root/mingw/lib/pkgconfig \ ./configure --host=i686-pc-mingw32 \ --enable-lcms=no \ --without-gnome-vfs make With this command and the patches below I built 'inkscape.exe', and did some limited testing, and it appears to run under Wine >= 1.1.6. (Note that at no point is MS Windows required). The patches and specfile we use are in our development repository[3], and also attached to this email. (a) mingw32-inkscape-20081027-no-gc-version-check-when-crosscompiling.patch You cannot run programs when cross-compiling (not even if you have Wine). This first patch disables a test for the version of libgc which relied on running a test program. (b) mingw32-inkscape-20081027-extra-win32-objects.patch I'm not quite sure why, but a load of Win32 source files are apparently missing from the Makefile.am's. It should be safe to add these for all platforms, as long as the sources files themselves are surrounded by #ifdef WIN32 ... #endif. (c) mingw32-inkscape-20081027-no-is-os-vista.patch The code uses a function called 'is_os_vista' that doesn't seem to exist. Maybe this was added to a new version of some dependency? (d) mingw32-inkscape-20081027-pango-enable-engine.patch Some files don't compile unless you define PANGO_ENABLE_ENGINE. I didn't look into this very deeply, but certainly defining this symbol at the top of the affected files fixes this. (e) mingw32-inkscape-20081027-no-setenv.patch This is a hack we use to remove a reference to 'setenv' because that API doesn't exist on Windows. I hope you find this useful, and maybe you can use it to automate builds and tests on the Windows version. Rich. hotkeys indication

Hi, Recently I discovered that quite a number of users are not aware of mnemonic hotkeys for tools. That is, looking at tools tooltips they only see Fn hotkeys (SVN version doesn't show even them) and they have no idea that mnemonic keys are available. And they don't read http://inkscape.org/doc/keys.html especially since it's not available offline. Thus the question: in case we will still show hotkeys in tooltips in stable 0.47, should we show both? E.g. "Create 3D boxes (Shift+F4, x) or "Create 3D boxes (Shift+F4 or x) Alexandre

Make bug 227949 enter in Milestone 0.47 ?

Hello, I'm not familiar with how "milestones" work and what they are, nor with what "string freeze" and similar are, so I'll ask my question and for your indulgence if it's not a "good" question. In May 2008, I filed a bug which I think is a major annoyance when using 0.46: the bug is https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/227949 and is: ENTER does not work anymore in transform dialog (but does in 0.45.1). I was really hoping that the bug would make it in 0.47, but looking at https://launchpad.net/inkscape/+milestone/0.47 , I don't see it in the list. So, the question is, is that list "closed"? If not, is there a way to make the bug enter in it? Can I "nominate for release" or something? Will that be enough? (I do understand that asking this is "pushing" the bug, but I also think it's a really important feature that the users have lost, in usability). Thanks for any answer!

Hi all, Maybe there are people out here that have time to kill and want to help on Inkscape but don't want to or can't code C++. I'd like to remind you of this years 'Test Suite' GSoC project, which was imo very succesfull. We need artists that can provide SVG files and PNG renders of them; so no coding required! The testsuite can be found here: https://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/inkscape/gsoc-testsuite For some documentation see: http://www.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/TestingInkscape ("rendering tests") What this testsuite does is provide numerous svg files that are rendered by Inkscape to PNGs. The PNGs are then compared to a reference PNG and Inkscape will score a pass or fail for that particular "testcase" svg file. It is a very nifty procedure/tool to see what Inkscape can and cannot do. Moreover, it can be used to track regressions. So where can you help? Add testcase files! If you've created some crazy drawing that uses complicated SVG structures, or LPEs, or perhaps you have a simple drawing with 'corner cases' (lines with zero length, rectangles with zero length, closed paths with start and end markers, etc...).... those are the files we need ! Note that we need a lot of files where Inkscape does something non-trivial but does it correctly! This way we can ensure that will work in the next version. If you can also provide a reference PNG of the correct rendering, that would be awesome :) Check the testcases directory, perhaps your testcase is already there. You can post the testcases on launchpad, mail it to me, or find another way of getting it to us. Ask the maillist if you'd like SVN write access, if you've shown good work in two patches, it will be granted to you. update-inkscape - a build/update bash script (Linux)

Hi there, So a while ago I hacked together a script to do the legwork of downloading/building/installing. To date, I've been using it w/o any real grief (yet), so I thought I'd clean it up and send it out there on the tubes.. who knows, maybe someone else will find it handy (or wants to adapt it to a real package manager or something). Sorry, I'm not savvy on creating RPMs, DEBs, or what-have-you, so yeah.. I can't help with that just yet. At any rate, here's the useage (pretty simple): # first time build from SVN (no source yet) update-inkscape # catch up your build to the latest from SVN update-inkscape # build a specific SVN version (in this case, -r20036) update-inkscape 20036 Btw, some notes about the script: 1 - This script doesn't take care of Inkscape's build dependencies.. sorry, but the package names differ by distro, so unfortunately I have to leave that up to the user to take care of first 2 - Putting it to work is the usual deal.. put it in ~/bin and 'chmod u+x ~/bin/update-inkscape' 3 - I prefer to keep my source in ~/install/apps/inkscape/trunk (you can change this by editing the ${BUILD_DIR} variable) 4 - when it installs - it installs to /opt/inkscape/${revnum} (I keep a couple revs handy in case the latest doesn't work out) - if you ever want to uninstall/remove an old build, simply 'sudo rm -rf /opt/inkscape/${revnum}' (also don't forget to rm the symlinks in ~/bin) - if you ever want to switch your default 'inkscape' command to an older version, simply run 'ln -sf /opt/inkscape/${revum}/bin/* ~/bin' 5 - it uses 'sudo' for the root privilege stuff (which isn't setup by default on Fedora, but it's pretty easy to, let me know if you got q's) 6 - I did away w/ the normal output flood, and instead replaced them with 'busy dots'... sorry, I didn't implement a toggle switch for this - however, output is by default saved to: ~/install/apps/inkscape/trunk/${cmdname}.log ~/install/apps/inkscape/trunk/${cmdname}-error.log - the one downside to this is that 'sudo make install' is unfortunately saved to the unhelpfully named 'sudo.log' and 'sudo-error.log' Let me know if you folks have any questions/run into any problems. Hopefully the script source is clear enough to grok, but my bash-fu is still pretty grasshopper.. so if you've got any suggestions for improvement, feel free to let me know. Cheers. --Mike

Sorry, I got off on a branch and ended up with a bunch of things. I'm just going to flatten and merge... Here's the list. * Added a focus mode activated by Shift+F11. The goal of this mode is to remove all toolbars for a short period so that you maximize screen area. Useful on small screens. Also when you know lots of shortcuts. * Created what I'm calling "Quick Zoom." The idea here is to have a modal zoom for touching up something with fine detail and then returning to what you're doing. This is activated with the letter "Q" on the keyboard. When you release it, you return back to where you were. This will zoom in on selected objects, or if you're in the node tool selected nodes. * Added .svg on the temporary files in extensions. This'll make many of them happier. This only works on recent versions of GLib, but shouldn't break older ones more than they already are. * Moved the Inkscape configuration directory on Linux from ~/.inkscape to ~/.config/Inkscape. This is the new way to do things with the cross desktop naming spec. I'm unsure whether we should be putting crash dumps in .config or .cache though. * Removed 'tools_switch_current' because every usage of it already had a pointer to where it needed to go. Removes usage of globals. * Made it so that dialogs will be transparent when not focused. This is an alternate to having the docked, and one that I like better as I feel it gives me more screen area. You can adjust how much transparency and the speed of the animation in the preferences dialog. (Note: this requires GTK+ 2.12 and a compositor, but gracefully degrades if you don't have either)

Re factoring effort

Since the main focus of 0.47 is refactoring, I'm posting some ideas for discussion I've come up with while refactoring the preferences code (the final version of which just made it into SVN). 1. id-clashes.cpp - this is a stopgap solution at best. The roadmap proposes to solve this problem by making SPObjects ref-aware. I think this isn't a good idea, as it uses a canvas level API to solve an XML level problem. The real solution would be to make the XML tree CSS-aware (to detect ID references in CSS), and handle this transparently by special-casing the "id" attribute so that setAttribute("id", "something") would automatically update every ID in the document. An alternative approach would be to have an XML::Document level API like alterID(gchar const *oldid, gchar const *newid) which would do the same. 2. Tools tree. This is one of the last big chunks of GObject left in the codebase. It's also rather messy - for example, every tool has a gradient dragger but in reality it only makes sense for the Node and Gradient tools. Converting this hierarchy to C++ would be a great step forward. It would also get rid of toolbox.cpp. 3. Namespace proliferation. Many namespaces contain just a few members and their fully qualified names are very long. The record is namespace depth of 4 for internal bitmap extensions and a few other things. Is this level of granularity really necessary? There's also the UI namespace - its purpose is unclear to me because Inkscape::UI::Widget::SuperGizmo conveys no additional information compared to Inkscape::Widget::SuperGizmo. It's obvious to me that widgets and dialogs are parts of the UI, so why put Widget and Dialog namespaces in another namespace? On top of that, names of many classes are redundant, like Inkscape::UI::Dialog::SomeDialog. It should be either Inkscape::UI::SomeDialog or Inkscape::Dialog::Some. BTW: The "using namespace" directive is discouraged in the coding practices. 4. Transferring data between Inkscape and other apps. The new clipboard code is a step in the right direction (by the way - thanks for everyone for fixing the issues with it I weren't able to find), but the "import/export drawing data as some format" functionality should be split off into another function/object, so that the same code is used for importing and exporting via drag-and-drop, the Import and Export dialogs and the clipboard. 5. Memory leak problem (?). Inkscape is constantly eating memory even when idle. Is anyone aware of why is this happening? Also of note is the fact that creating a single rect can take up to 250 kilobytes. 6. Verbs. It looks like verbs.cpp is a reimplementation of Gtk::Action with some extra features. I don't know this part of Inkscape very well but it looks like we could create an Inkscape::UndoableAction deriving from Gtk::Action and use it instead of verbs. We could then use Gtk::UIManager to build menus and toolbars. Please let me know if you have any suggestions / objections regarding those refactoring problems, and whether they make sense to you. gradient fill swap (tooltip?)

speaking of tooltips - I can never remember the cntrl key to swap a gradient fill from inside-out to outside-in. I've thought about what would be the best way to do this in the gradient editor or the gradient edit bars but really haven't come up with something good. Maybe an extra button on the type of fill. Maybe dragging the bars from positive to negative would do it or maybe just a tooltip that gives the cntrl key - well worth the dwell :)
