Making GTK UI for inkscape preferences dialog.

Hello everybody, I was trying to add radio buttons for some optional preferences, this GSoC, to allow for attribute checking. I therefore, with discussions with Tavmjong and Josh, decided to add this kinda UI in the SVG Output pane of the preferences dialog to the right hand side area : Incorrect Attributes: Remove ( ) Warn (x) Ignore ( ) Incorrect Style Properties: Remove ( ) Warn (x) Ignore ( ) Style Defaults Remove ( ) Warn (x) Ignore ( ) As you might realize, that each button, takes up one row. Therefore, if some button on the left hand side of this UI corresponds to another button, and has a row width set to some higher value, the UI breaks and become like this. Incorrect Style Properties: Remove ( ) Warn (x) Ignore ( ) Too much gap between Remove and Warn options, the reason being, the row in which Remove lies has the width set to some higher value and hence this weird UI. Therefore to tackle such a thing I made a DialogPage inside a DialogPage. Like SVGOutput in itself is a DialogPage and I made another DialogPage named AtrributeChecking and attached it to the right hand side. This kinda solved the former problem, but another problem came up. Now when I expand the preferences window, this right hand side buttons keep moving to the middle like this Remove() Remove() Remove() like this the on dragging and expanding the window, the buttons keep going in the right hand side direction. DXF output extension

Hi all, I just added support for clones in the non-pstoedit DXF output extension in trunk. Would be happy if people could do some testing. I also removed the DXF-comment from the DXF output because KLayout does not support that. Should we not rename this extension from "Desktop Cutting Plotter (AutoCAD DXF R14)" to just "AutoCAD DXF R14" ? There is another pstoedit-based output extension called "AutoCAD DXF R12", but this one is not available by default (and requires some extra work to get it going on Windows), and does not support layers. Hello all The branch at lp:~tweenk/inkscape/gsoc-caching contains the first testable features of my performance improvement project. The SVG drawing is rendered to a separate surface, so it doesn't need to be redrawn every time there is an editing control drawn over it. The responsiveness of path highlighting in complex documents is improved dramatically. If you turn off real-time updates of paths and leave only real-time updates of outlines on in node editor preferences, there is also a significant improvement in responsiveness when editing complex filtered paths. To fix some breakage with clipped groups (appears to be a Cairo problem, but I couldn't isolate it) I have substantially changed the rendering pipeline. Clipping paths are now rasterized and the drawing is composited with them using the IN operator. This allows us to handle nested clipping paths and clip-rule correctly. As an unrelated improvement, text objects can now be used as clipping paths. Regards, Krzysztof

Mesh update

Hi, At last weeks SVG Working Group meeting it was resolved that meshes be accepted as part of SVG 2.0. It was decided that meshes should be treated as geometric primitives if defined outside a <defs> section and as a paint server if defined inside. I've put my code into a branch that can be obtained at: bzr branch lp:~tavmjong-free/inkscape/mesh It must be linked against Cairo trunk. I've made a few changes since the SVG WG meeting. The attribute 'stop-path' has been rename 'path' at the WG's request. The code now handles 'stop-opacity'. There are five example SVG files in the share/examples directory (their names all begin with "mesh") including one that shows the effect of setting an opacity of less that 1 on two corners of a patch. The examples can also be seen at: http://tavmjong.free.fr/SVG/MESH/Mesh_Inkscape.html Note that there is no ability to edit the meshes, it only handles meshes used as gradients, and that there are frequent crashes (possibly in the cairo code). SVG to PNG

Hi, I use Inkscape on a GNU/Linux server with no graphical user interface in order to convert "large" SVG files generated by a software of mine to PNG. Actually Inskcape is the only software I've found that is able to manage the SVG TextPath correctly, even imageMagick does not process TextPath. I would like to know if some of you know a way to speed up the loading process of Inkscape (I believe it loads tons of things even if it's used to "only" convert files in command line) or if some of you know another software able to convert SVG files containing TextPaths quicker than Inkscape.... Build times

What kind of build times do you get when doing a complete clean build? And on what kind of machine? Currently I'm only working on a notebook (three years old, and lets just say I bought it for the daylight readable screen and light weight, not its performance) and frankly this is starting to be a nuisance. Usually a complete build takes about six hours or so, but recently it took as much as ten hours... (Probably because part of the time I was also doing something on the side, but still.) As a stop gap measure I've now started using ccache, but obviously that doesn't help much when doing normal builds. So I'm beginning to consider buying a new machine and am wondering what sort of improvement I can expect from what kind of machine (using a complete clean build as a kind of benchmark). BTW, I'm running Windows with btool so this is without making use of both cores of my machine. If anyone has any tips for building Inkscape on Windows using two cores, I'd love to try it out and see how much of a difference that makes.

Windows packaging for 0.49

Hey All, I have a couple things I'm going to look into for 0.49. One thing is offering msi installers. The other is potentially providing a native 64bit version as well. There was recently a discussion, I believe on the gtk list, about using OpenSuse's build service to compile windows binaries. I checked, and indeed there is a 64bit version of Inkscape compiled for Windows as well as all necessary 64bit libs (I have yet to test them, but it's planned for this weekend). It's a little different since they're packed in RPMs and use an "interesting" directory structure. However, I bet with a little bit of scripting we could automate all aspects of this and possibly add in re-packaging it and pushing automated nightly builds to modevia. Thoughts? Cheers, Josh

Rendering bug with some filters (Cairo?)

I found a rendering bug in The two Inkscape Cairo versions I use (10404 and 10514) with the "Non realistic 3D shaders" filter effect. It's linked with the first "Composite" in the tree and particularly visible when it's set on "XOR" (which is often used in thsi kind of filter). Inkscape 0.48.1 render them correctly. Adding node with ctrl+alt

Hi all, When you add a node to a path using the nodetool with ctrl+alt, it maintains the selection of previously selected nodes. This is extremely annoying: consider adding a node, moving it a bit, adding a new one, wanting to move it but then the old one also moves... (thanks Alessandro for pointing this out to me). Is this desired behavior? If so, is it ok to add an option to reset selection to only the newly added node? Ciao, Johan

Raw penstroke handling

Hi, I'm new to this list and haven't been using Inkscape for long, but I think this one belongs on this list. I asked elsewhere whether it was possible for Inkscape to record, edit and playback penstrokes through the calligraphic tool, and the answer was a negative one. So I went away and thought about it. I wrote a quick C header (at http://chalisque.com/c/penstroke/stroke.h) to illustrate the idea. It's quite short at present, just capturing the abstract idea, so I've included it at the bottom. (I'm not interested in compiling it yet, so don't comment about the //comments if these are not legal in C yet.) The thinking took me beyond Inkscape, but its use in Inkscape (and possibly GIMP) was its raison d'etre, so I think Inkscape developers are probably worth talking to, but consider this. Suppose there was a generic (at the level of GNOME or Unity or whatever) method to capture and manipulate raw penstrokes which could be analysed to produce other slightly different penstroke objects and which could be saved, loaded and passed from application to application. I could draw something in Inkscape, take the raw penstrokes that were used as input, pass them to GIMP and run it through one of GIMP's brushes to produce a bitmap image that could then be re-imported into an Inkscape document (so as to be able to efficiently use GIMP's filters and brushes) etc. For now I am just asking some of you to consider the possibilties and think ahead to the possibility of these facilities being available (whether Linux only or everywhere Inkscape runs I'll leave to other discussions.) Hi all, To follow up our recent discussions about building against an external copy of libgdl (https://launchpad.net/bugs/792115)... I have played with the code, and here is a summary of my findings: The Inkscape fork of GDL is branched from gdl-0.7.7, which was released a loooong time ago. There have been very substantial upstream changes/bug-fixes since then. In particular, our version uses lots of deprecated/obsolete GTK calls, meaning that Inkscape will fail to build against GTK 3. We therefore need to fix this issue fairly quickly. Our fork of GDL introduces a couple of new features. Here are the main ones I can see: * Focus switching between docked dialogs, with tab/arrow-key bindings * Ability to create a docked dialog using a pixbuf icon. I have forwarded a patch upstream to GDL (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=652248) asking if they would be able to merge any of our changes. The upstream developer was very supportive and helpful, and had a few queries. However, I'm not an expert on GDL/GTK and I'm not in the best position to comment. I see three options for fixing the problem: 1) Build against external GDL right away --- This should be easy to do, but we'd lose our changes for a while. However, I'm not sure any of the changes represent essential Inkscape design features and we'd be able to reimplement them when they appear in the upstream API. 2) Merge our changes into upstream GDL 2.30 and copy this into the Inkscape code --- This will take a bit of fiddling around, and it still relies upon us working with forked code. I have managed to make a branch of inkscape with gdl-2.3.0+changes that compiles and runs, but it is buggy (no colour switching and some graphics glitches). Unfortunately, my GTK knowledge is not good enough for me to do this by myself. If anyone is able & willing to help, I can push the new branch. 3) Don't fix it yet! --- Wait until upstream have implemented all the changes (in GDL >=3.1.1) and then switch over. However, we have no guarantee of how long this will take, and we will be unable to support GDK+ 3 builds until we switch! Please let me know what you think! AV

Page border display uncomplete

Rev 10495 on kubuntu When page shadow is disabled the horizontal line at the bottom of the page border disappears at launching. If you disable and reactivate page border it comes back. But if you scroll this line ouside the document window (up or down) it disappears again when you scroll back. ivan

GtkObject deprecation

Hi All, I reported bug #813212 <https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/813212> a couple of days ago, which deals with the deprecation of GtkObject in GTK+ 3. I have taken a quick look at fixing the problem, but there a couple of things I'm not confident about. Perhaps someone with more GTK+ experience could help out here? One of the main issues here is that SPCanvasItem (our custom implementation of GnomeCanvas) is a subclass of GtkObject. GNOME Evolution got round this problem in their own copy of GnomeCanvas by changing the parent class to GObject. This introduces a couple of issues that I could use some help with: 1) What do we do about the "::destroy" signal? GObject has no such signal... there is a "::dispose", but is it functionally equivalent? Can we just rename all the gtk_object_destroy calls to g_object_run_dispose, and replace the custom GtkObject.destroy implementations with GObject.dispose? Does the same apply for GtkObjectClass and GObjectClass? 2) What do we do about the GtkObjectFlags enumeration? This is deprecated, and no equivalent is available in GObject. Can we just add a typedef for a "SPCanvasItemFlags" enumeration in sp-canvas-item.h, and add a "guint32 flags" member to SPCanvasItem? Thanks, Alex

Hey All, Windows devs, what version of Win are you all running regularly? Do many still run XP or 2000? (I know user-wise they're still pretty common, just not sure in our circle) On the Linux side, I'm trying to get a feel for how old the distros everyone uses are... does anyone lag any older than one "LTS" for example? Do people tend to upgrade with every release? For me, I tend to run whatever the next release of Ubuntu is (so I'm using what will be 10.10 for example)... what can I say other than I like bleeding. ;) On the Mac side, what are your upgrade habits? There is relevance to me asking this, but I will hold off on sharing until there's a bit of feedback. Cheers, Josh

Hi I'm using devel versions from PPA for trunk and I noticed that the about screen doesn't show the revision number (it just shows "0.48+devel r"). It showed the revision number in previous versions, so I assume something broke there (I can't tell when, but at least in the last two trunk builds from PPA) Gez.

Hi, all! I use inkscape version 0.48.1 r (May 14 2011). Yesterday i saw a strange behaviour of a text element. Inkscape show me the text from the file: <?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes"?> <svg width="210mm" height="297mm" version="1.1" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"> <text x="72mm" y="38mm" dx="0mm 2mm 4mm 2mm 4mm 2mm 2mm 2mm"> <title>some title</title> 12072011 </text> </svg> as "1 20 72011", instead of "12 07 2011". If i delete the title element or comment it, the text element show me as needed. Is this a bug or may be i do anything wrong? Thanks.

When I try to compile trunk I get: Make error line 303: problem compiling: In file included from src/libnr/test-nr. cpp:13:0: ./src/libnr/in-svg-plane-test.h:7:25: fatal error: 2geom/isnan.h: No such file o r directory Any ideas? Seems like a weird kind of file to be missing, so am I using the wrong version of GCC or something? (This is on Windows, using the latest devlibs and trunk.)

Debugging Inkscape on Linux

Hi all, If try debugging inkscape using gdb on Linux, then you will have noticed that in some cases xserver will become unresponsive. This happens for example if you hit a breakpoint or assert while you were dragging an object. Years ago, one of our developers blogged about a trick to run gdb on a virtual terminal and have inkscape still run within the xserver. I cannot recall however who it was and were it was posted, but it was a cumbersome workaround anyway because you had to operate gdb from a terminal (something I've never been able to master). I've now learned a better way to do this, using gdb from within Elipse which allows you to inspect any variable by using your mouse only. That's a level I can handle ;-) See http://developer.gnome.org/gtk-faq/stable/x461.html for an explanation. I couldn't manage to get the first option working (btw --sync has been deprecated as of recently, see http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/test/2011-February/097248.html). New color system/swatch for Inkscape

Hi, I was approached the other day by Gabriel Vano (Cc'd in this message) from Give Life Color System (http://www.givelifecolorsystem.com/FreeColors.php) to help him contact someone on the Gimp dev list to ask if they would be interested in adding this new color system to their software. As Inkscape is using the same type of file for swatches I thought I'd give it a try, and it worked fine as you can at the bottom of this screenshot ( http://www.codexion.com/files/inkscape_givelifepalette.png). Do you think it might be interesting to add this swatch by default in future versions of Inkscape? Hi, I'm working on the javascript interface[1], and my mentor gave the idea of implementing syntax highlighting. In order to do that, I was thinking of using gtksourceviewmm. Is it possible(desirable) to add this lib to Inkscape? Should I keep the version without the lib, and then use some ifdefs and a "./configure" flag to choose between the two? License of Inkscape Tango icons?

Dear Inkscape developers, my name is Carsten Fuchs and I'm the main developer of the Cafu game and graphics engine, http://www.cafu.de We're currently in the process of updating the user interfaces of our graphical editor applications, i.e. the Map Editor, GUI Editor and Model Editor. So far, our new icon sets are based on own artwork and icons from the GNOME Icon Theme 3.0, which is licensed both under the LGPL v3 as well as under CC BY-SA 3.0. After a lot of work, we're still lacking about half a dozen icons, and found that the Inkscape Tango icons (tango_icons.svg) would not only be a perfect fit, but are also very nice and wonderful! Do we understand right that the Inkscape icons are released under the same license as the Inkscape source code, the GPL v2? If so, would it be possible to release them under, for example, the CC BY-SA 3.0 as well? I'm asking this mainly because we're offering the Cafu engine both under the GPL v3 as well as under custom commercial license. At the same time, it generally seems widely unclear how the software-oriented GPL applies to artwork: e.g. if we exported about six icons from tango_icons.svg to PNG image files, and shipped them with our apps (both source code and binary editions) as separate files, i.e. not embedded in any executable or other file, and load them at runtime, would that still require us to omit them from our commercially-licensed packages? I'd be very grateful for your consideration and advice. This seems orthogonal to the current Verbs+SPAction custom framework used by Inkscape. I would like to start with a simple question: What is the benefit of Verbs versus GtkAction? bug in changing gradient color

Hi all, I just "tested" this bug with few inkscape-trunk revisions (Win32 and Natty). It is present for any inkscape-trunk versions bigger that 10349 (I didn't check earlier versions). now I use 10359 and the bug is still present. Steps to reproduce : Open a blank file - Draw a rectangle - Assign a color - Make a gradient using the gradient tool OR using Fill tab option - Edit the gradient, chose the color node then try to change colorspace to another one (CMYK, RGB, etc). - Bang. Black background in active sliders

Recently I've notice that active sliders have a heavy and thick black background, different than when disabled. (By the way, notice also that the "Opacity (%):" label is not grayed out). Is this intended? Personally I'd prefer having the same thin rail in both cases. Inkscape license + potential problem

Hello I am wondering under what license Inkscape actually is. Most source files don't have the full GPL copyright notice which specifies the version, they only say "released under GNU GPL". This would suggest that most of the code is GPLv2+. There are also several files dual-licensed under MPL and GPL. Our Launchpad website states that Inkscape is under GPLv2. However, I encountered a file which is GPLv3 only, apparently copied from GIMP (src/util/expression-evaluator.cpp). If we really are GPLv2, then including this file is not legal, as GPLv2 is not compatible with GPLv3. We would need to change our license to GPLv3 or GPLv3+ to include this file, or contact the original authors for a GPLv2 or BSD license. PS: our Windows devlibs also seem to be in a "gray area", because most of the copyright information is not present, which might break the license terms of the libraries. I'll try to remediate this by adding the license files from each package, once I have some spare time (i.e. not very soon). Regards, Krzysztof

(Sorry, my bitmap was too big at first time) This bug doesn't exist in 0.48.1 I saw it this morning in rev 10355 on Kubuntu Couls someone confirm it before I fill it on Launchpad ? When blur is combined with a Composite "in" some vertical dark lines are shown on rendering and exporting to bitmap. If vertical blur is set to zero the lines change to dots. If a little amount of black is added they disappear (here I decrease luminance and that works too). ivan

Code cleanup and minor tweaks

Hi Campbell, I just wanted to thank you for the recent improvement to our codebase, such as in revision 10359. Getting things fixed such as not passing 'false' in to pointers helps in many ways, including reducing the number of odd, hard to reproduce bugs. I also just wanted to point out a few minor style points that could help. One is with the use of "NULL". That is more of a C macro that in C++ has be replaced with the simple use of "0". I've looked into this point with coworkers and others at various points, and can try to dig up more details if you need them. The other point is in using whitespace. I realize that in your recent changes you have been preserving what already existed, but it is helpful if "cleanup" that touched lines left them with nicer spacing also. We have some info on our coding style page, but the gist is to put spaces between things, but not in the middle of things. :-) That is, space around keywords, operators, etc, but not between a function name and its opening paren. For example, this line you touched could be improved by spacing it thusly &&((l!=NULL&&!edge->isEnd(l->id))||l==NULL) && ((l != NULL && !edge->isEnd(l->id)) || l == NULL) Suddenly that makes the logic and the referencing easier to read and follow. It also gives more visibility to areas that could be made clearer with more parenthesis: && (((l != NULL) && !edge->isEnd(l->id)) || (l == 0) ) if I compare those right on top of each other, the legibility change should show up: &&((l!=NULL&&!edge->isEnd(l->id))||l==NULL) && (((l != NULL) && !edge->isEnd(l->id)) || (l == 0) ) Depending on the font, that might even reveal another problem. In general I strongly dislike single-letter literals (except for the common 'i' in for loops, etc). And even worse is the single letter variable 'l'. In fact, in the font I'm typing with at the moment I can not tell the difference between the lower-case-letter-el, the capital-letter-eye and the vertical-bar-pipe-| (lI|). What is worse is some fonts even make the numeral -one indistinguishable. But this is a side rant on a given bad variable. If you happen to be touching enough lines, consider giving it a better name. Anyway, thanks for the help in this area and the opportunity for me to point out to some of the other newer people on the list what sort of tweaks can help our codebase be more legible and maintainable.

Extensions and Warnings

I'm trying to solve a bug with my deviantArt stash extension. It produces warnings because poxy webkit with bleedin java and god aweful html decide that it's a great idea to shout out to the world a whole bunch of version information, including any javascript errors that happen in the loaded pages. What cute is that I told the inx to load a bash shell which loaded the python script and to dev/null everything. That didn't hack fix it. I tried redirecting sys.stderr to a file, somehow it still manages to come through. Please tell me there is a way to stop inkscape from reporting warnings from python extensions? There is no reason to report warnings to users unless they can be formatted in a nice way and these can't be. Martin,

Removing dead Inkboard code

Hello As part of the general theme for the current development cycle, which appears to be "in-tree forks & cruft must die", I have completely removed Inkboard. Here are the reasons. 1. This code is seriously bitrotted and was disabled for a long time, with no one stepping up to put it back into shape. 2. It is behind times. A modern implementation would use something like Telepathy instead of a homegrown XMPP library. 3. Even if it worked, there is a very good chance it would have several remote execution vulnerabilities. 4. I'm not even sure Inkscape is the proper place for such functionality. It's cool, but it looks very much like feature bloat to me. People can do this much better using Google Docs drawings, which can be exported as SVG. 5. The fact that there were no loud complaints about the disappearance of Inkboard around version 0.47 indicates that few people were using it. Regards, Krzysztof

versioning scheme, take 2

Hey all, Almost two years later and there has been no consensus. It is being brought up again due to a brief discussion with JonCruz via IRC. So, does anyone want to change from the leading 0 scheme at this point? Jon mentioned potential of 4.9 as opposed to 0.49, or the year/month method as Ubuntu uses for example, if 0.49 is released in Aug/Sept it would be 11.08/11.09. Bryce had also suggested a year/current system hybrid a couple years ago when last discussed, such as 2011.0.49 (which I guess I'd rather see something like that go more like 11.49). So... thoughts on if we should do this? My vote? Yes... we need to have a solid leading number because that matters (psychologically) to a number of users. Besides, with Google & Mozilla incrementing version numbers in their software so quickly, it makes me feel less like we need to hold to a very developer oriented version numbering scheme. (come on, Thunderbird even flat out gets to skip a major digit, so that lessens the blow if we did do decimal bump for a 4.9 or whatever else imho) Cheers, Josh

If you think you have found a case where Inkscape makes the "wrong" decision (that is, it outputs a longer string than necessary), that would be a bug and I'd love to hear about it. If you're seeing it mostly choose relative coordinates, that is because it favors relative coordinates when all things are equal (this tends to avoid switching between the two, as relative coordinates are hardly ever worse than absolute coordinates). > (BTW, the the length of the path data would be better minimized were the > coordinates smartly rounded instead of such values as -113.000006 > or -12.99999) If you see things like that there can be a number of things going on. One problem is that Inkscape (currently) has to write out values in the decimal number system while internally it uses binary numbers (of course). This leads to a whole host of problems, not the least of which is cases like the ones you give (although generally integers aren't a big problem, so that's a bit weird). Then there is the problem that as you move things around (or even place things) Inkscape works with limited precision and errors might accumulate. When the error gets large enough you can get numbers like the ones you give. Inkscape does round the numbers it writes out though, and you can control that through the preferences. Making numbers "snap" to integers when they deviate from an integer by more than the allowed tolerance is problematic at best. Now, unfortunately you do not give the full path in which you see these numbers appearing, but if these are from relative coordinates then there is a good chance that it is a bug. Suppose that you have set Inkscape to use only 4 digits, and you have a line from 1200.2,0 to 1210.4,0. Using absolute coordinates this would be "M 1200,0 L 1210,0". Using relative coordinates this SHOULD become "m 1200,0 l 10,0", and NOT "m 1200,0 l 10.4,0", and Inkscape does have code to deal with this. So if it does not act like this, then you have found a bug and I'd love to know about it. Especially the -113.000006 has me worried a bit, is it from an actual path? If so, can you please send me the full path data? There is a chance that it is legitimate (again, Inkscape can make a locally suboptimal choice if that ultimately leads to a smaller string), but it does not happen that often, so I'd like to see what happened here.

Using xpath in Inkscape code?

I would like to be able to select nodes using XPath: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/798640 I naively assumed this would be trivial but when I dig in the code it doesn't seem like it is. In particular it is not immediately obvious how to convert between Inkscapes DOM model and libxml2:she model. The simplest way I can think about now is a workaround involving loading the file with libxml2, and find the nodes in that tree instead. I can't be the only one wanting to do things like this. Currently inkscape does a rather weird font substitution (at least I, as a user, can't tell how and when it works) and there's no clear indicator of that substitution except the warning icon in the font selector once the text element is edited. In my experience (both with libre and proprietary applications) automatic font fallback has never been completely succesful and frequently it's more problematic than helpful. Manual selection of the replacement is always annoying but at least less dangerous. To make it worse, there's no visual indication that fonts have been replaced in Inkscape, so things can look fine at a first glance when in reality they are very wrong when you sent the artwork to print, exported, etc. Automatic font fallback can be useful for document accessibility, but from a graphic designer perspective it's too dangerous to be considered as a viable option. Since I consider Inkscape a design application I'd say it's more important to actually KNOW that the original font isn't available than finding a quick replacement (which potentially could completely destroy the original design because the character set isn't complete, metrics don't match or simply its style is different). IMO the ideal solution would be the use of embeddable fonts as it was stated before, but meanwhile a safer choice would be to replace the missing fonts using the default (or yes, using some font replacement technique) but making it visually clear the the fonts used in the document aren't the originally assigned, using some highlight or visual cue of some kind. But anyway, before speaking about how fonts have to be replaced, Bug #168658 should be addressed since it's too dangerous for artwork integrity.

Hi, I'm using inkscape for various projects, and I'm now concerned about automatically rendering graphics for my game project. However, several images are rendered from the same SVG file, with different layers/objects visibles. While --export-id (and --export-id-only) is helpful in some cases, it's not always sufficient. Therefore, I think hiding certain objects with a new command-line option such as --hide-id would be a worthy improvement. Allowing multiple --export-id might be useful too. Regards, Thibaut Girka.

Guideline snap rotation absolute/relative

In rev. 10303 guidelines shift+ctrl rotation has been changed to consider the guide initial angle as base. The absolute rotation was made by purpose, it was not a bug to be fixed. Guidelines are absolute objects and it was decided to make them snap at absolute angles, regardless of their initial orientation. Also, now a relative rotation is made possible by the new math in input fields feature: just open a guide, then write a +15 in the angle field and it's done. Personally I find the "relative" option of little usefullness. Should I need it, there is already a simple way to obtain it, while I use a lot absolute snapping so I can "recycle" guides already on screen rather than throwing a lot, having to clean them one by one. More: the math needed requires trigonometric functions and this makes me think that repeatedly rotating a guide will inevitably lead to rounding errors so you could eventually end up with a guide not starting from where it was at the beginning. This is a huge problem for technical drawings and would force me to carefully avoid using this function (this means always opening the guide menu and input the desired angle or always start from a vertical or horizontal guide and make a single rotation!). I ask for reverting back to the previous behaviour, please. Or add a different modifier for the two options (but we already know that there are less modifiers than the functions involved with guides...). Regards. Hi. Thanks for setting the PPA! Is it possible to change the name of that builds from inkscape to something like "inkscape-devel" so it doesn't replace the stable build from repos? Inkscape is one of the main tools in my pipe and I give it a heavy daily use, so I cannot afford to have an unstable inkscape, but I don't want it to keep me from testing the new stuff! Hi Everyone, I am on the process to resume my work on Inkscape I did about css. I was using svn, now I have a new computer so I start again fresh with bazaar, so far so good. Since its running Windows 7 x64 I decided to give a try to mingw64. Compiling btool went fine, however when running it allocated 4 gig of memory and stalls. A quick look didn’t help figure out what could be the cause and now I revert to x32. Now I wonder what is the ground of using btool today. Is it still a necessity ? Other projects compile both on Windows and Linux without any specific tool. It would also help to benefit from a real incremental build. Any ideas of what was already tried around btool ? Also if there is already some ideas of having Inkscape addins let me know. Johan and I authored most of the system but I had given up on getting it to link properly and than went on hiatus from working on Inkscape. At the end of the configuration generation it should tell the developer what libs are not being used. Similar to what KDE's Calligra does currently. For Experimental features I'm find with this. CMake update

Hi Dev's, Over the weekend I found inkscape's cmake files were not working and took the time to update them, * What Works * - building on linux - auto-detecting libs - basic installation - generating config.h, inkscape-version.c - all source & headers listed in CMakeLists.txt * Whats needed * - Inkview target - Options from configure's --with/--without - a CMake module FindDBus.cmake, probably other libraries which are optional too. - CMake currently doesn't install translations, hicolor/icons, or man pages. Probably you already discussed this when first adding CMake but I checked on build times and IDE integration. Including all source files in the CMakeLists.txt files is important for IDE's mainly so they are aware of the headers. I double checked inkscape's source loads in QtCreator/Netbeans & Eclipse. To ensure cmake doesn't get out of sync with the source there is a script which parses the CMakeLists.txt files and makes sure file lists are value and don't miss any newly added files. ./CMakeScripts/cmake_consistency_check.py While a time test at this point is not quite fair, since cmake misses translations & linking inkview I ran one all the same :). Not including configure times and built with "time make -j6" on a 6 core system. cmake: 3min, 38sec. automake: 5min, 56sec. So writing to say the cmake files are (basically) working and if you're a developer who likes fast builds and IDE integration, this part works now. If there is some especially important thing I miss out, let me know and Ill try add it. If other devs want to add support for OSX/Windows, link inkview... etc, that'd be great too. -- - Campbell

Help regarding libcroco node-iface structure

Hello everybody, I am a student selected for GSoC 2011 in inkscape and have undertaken the CSS standardization project. I am currently converting libcroco to be in sync with inkscape's version of libcroco. Now I also have to deal with the tests already provided with libcroco. Test #(1-4) went perfectly, but in test #5 I have to modify the code so that it used the new libcroco function. In that test, initially there was xmlNode and xmlDoc from where we were getting data for instance in one function we had *CRXMLNodePtr a_node = xmlDoc->children*. But libXml has been removed and we do it some other way. This is what I need help in. May anybody please throw some light as to what do we use for initializing parameters for libcroco parsing as in what are the initial values of CRNodeIface and CRXMLNodePtr. Connector Tool

Hey All, It would be really nice if someone would look into some of the issues with the connector tool, especially since they keep adding up and rarely get redued. It seems that at this point it is unmaintained and unfinished, which to me puts it in the same category as the our disabled technical/lpe tool. Meaning that if it doesn't see love by the time we're wrapping up 0.50 (or whatever that version will be), I personally feel that it should be disabled at that point and will request a vote. I know people have used it, it's cruft is in their documents, but if it's not going to be given a serious go, it makes no sense to have it. Just wanting to bring the issue up with plenty of notice. The latest build for Slackware is 48.1. It requires updates of a dozen libraries newer than what comes with Slackware 13.37. The first library I tried, GTKMM was not available from its home site. So----what about Inkscape 48? will it work with the older libraries that come with slackware 13.37? How far back in the Inkscape line do I have to go to find a version that will work with the libraries in Slack 13.37? Typically the libraries date back to Oct 2009. -- John Culleton

Hi all, I'd like some usabilty input for this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/791098 It requests an option to have the Save a Copy dialog always open in the current document's directory. The Save As... dialog already has this option (preferences > save). Should I add an option below the Save As... dialog option in the preference dialog, or should I use the same setting for both dialogs? Large but small change heads-up

Hi, I just wanted to toss out a heads-up on change 10254 that I just pushed to trunk. It removed the outdated/unsafe SP_DOCUMENT_DEFS() macro, and changed about 58 files. Most of those were just a few lines, however, so it should not cause any major conflicts. However if anyone has some pending work, now might be a good time to re-sync from trunk so as to avoid potential extra steps being needed when committing.

Given that the recently updated devlibs required modifying trunk to compile, it seems logical to just ship out the fixes that have landed in the 0.48 branch since .1 was released. In keeping things up to date and all of that fun, the 0.48.x branch is currently upgrading on lp...so I just wanted to give a heads up to everyone on that (it will just be like when we upgraded trunk). It should hopefully be done in a few hours. If anyone has and questions or concerns, please let me know. Also, if you know of any "must have" fixes which don't already exist that you think should make it, please let me know. Cheers, Josh

Hi, I'm writing a Live Path Effect, and I'm trying to get the label and/or id of the path to which the effect is being applied. Win32 build broken?

Hi, Apparently there's something broken in the current win32 build with the new devlibs r22. Without the devlibs installed (or in a different location), Inkscape returns an error message stating that libgcc_s_slj-1.dll can't be found, and then exists. With the devlibs installed, Inkscape launches as expected. Reproduced with the modevia's file (10216) and a local build (10215). No problem with the trunk revision 10204. Regards. -- Nicolas

The inkverb-* methods are interactive and theres a lot of them. So ‘m-x inkverb-calligraphic-prefs’ in a buffer using inkorg-minor-mode for example, will bring up the calligraphy preference ui. The inkverb-* methods are mostly ui related and take no arguments. The inkdoc-* methods are related to object creation and manipulation and are not (yet) declared interactive. Finding the right Inkscape operation in Emacs can actualy be much more efficient than using the menus in Inkscape. Especialy if you use some M-x booster such as Anything or Icicles." Hi everyone! Long ago I have mentioned a little observation process with a few Inkscape users and mentioned some 'papercuts' that showed up. As I have mentioned it before, papercuts are not quite bugs, so I have started to enter them in a somewhat structured manner at http://cuts.thinking-garment.com/. A bloggish, hideous website with bad humor on top and a missing search function, among other things. Time permitting, I will continue to add more from the notes I made way back. Of course I will try to see if they still apply to newer Inkscape versions. I hope this is useful in some way. Please feel free to suggest how/where/why this could be more useful. Recent surge of spam in the wiki

In recent weeks, Inkscape's Wiki is increasingly targeted by (presumably) spam bots which create a new user and a new page with spam (including uploaded images) [1]. 1) Could the wiki use tighter rules for the creation of new users (captchas?) that can't be exploited as easily as apparently the current configuration? 2) Who does have admin credentials to change the current wiki configuration? 3) Who else does have admin rights to clean up (delete pages, block user accounts)? Hi, A while ago I asked the Inkscape list whether there was interest in an implementation of my curve sketching algorithm (see the thread at http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=24902605). There seemed to be interest and I wrote a cleaner (and much faster) version, although this took longer than I anticipated. There are still a bunch of improvements possible, but at this point it's quite usable. The code and a windows installer for a demo binary are available at http://code.google.com/p/cornucopia-lib/ and there's some documentation. I am completely unfamiliar with Inkscape's codebase, so the integration would need to be done by one of the Inkscape devs. As a proof-of-concept, however, I wrote a very crude replacement of the bezier_fit_cubic_r call with a call to Cornucopia in the pencil tool (patch attached--of course, you have to build and link to Cornucopia to try it). For the real thing, I'd need to find a better mapping from the "smoothness" slider in Inkscape to my myriad of parameters. Is someone interested in working on this? I would, of course, help in what way I can (although I'm pretty busy these days and my response latency may be high occasionally). Thanks, -Ilya

Hi, I have a question about the handling or not-handling of the viewbox attribute in symbols when using cairo export. I tried to export a map from openstreetmap to pdf and got http://s1.directupload.net/file/d/2504/thghng78_png.htm as result. Cairo branch builds on win32, what next?

I just committed a patch that completely removes the win32.cpp/.h that were causing build problems (and apparently weren't used anymore). Apart from ripping out some printing related code that wasn't used anymore this also removed the is_os_wide function. Although this function is in principle unrelated and could have been kept, I decided to get rid of that as well. This means that any remaining support for Win9x/ME that depended on this is now gone (as far as know we didn't support those windows versions anymore anyway, so it was just extra baggage). So, what next? I might have encountered a pretty serious regression in text rendering, but I haven't looked deeper into that yet. (And it might be known already or it might be something specific to my set up.)

They rely on GTKmm and gettext as well, and use NullSoft installer. If anyone has packaging knowledge and is willing to help fellow free graphics software developers, please ping me for contacts. Additionally, and this is, well, just my humble (yeah right :)) wish is that we (Synfig and Inkscape) should cooperate as projects. We don't have the manpower to do animation, and they don't have the manpower to do better SVG importing (they don't have SVG _ex_porting yet, AFAIK). New SpinButtons with math ops

Hi all, The last few days I added functionality to spinboxes: you can now type simple math expressions, like 100+20, 55*2, these kind of things. The code to add this functionality was taken from Gimp, very nice! You can try it out in the transform dialog for example. Works also in the toolbar, but... see below. It also works with units. You can write things like "2 cm", and it will be converted to whatever unit you have selected. Or you can write "(2 * 2 cm)*5 + 3 in". Toolbar spinboxes also have this functionality, but lack the unit stuff. (where it would be really convenient :( I will not work on this unit functionality in the toolbar. Maybe someone else can work on C++-ifying the "ege action" stuff and widget/toolbar.cpp, a first step on the way to getting there. In all C++ UI stuff it is easy to add, and let me know if it is missing somewhere. Ciao, Johan

Weird text problem in Cairo branch

The attached SVG (which I just made using the cairo branch) has three text objects. One with "$x$", one with "$y$" and one with "$z$" (without the quotes obviously). In 0.48 this shows up just fine, but in the Cairo branch only some of the characters are shown (those that are shown appear to be complete). In particular, for most fonts only the x and the z appear (so no dollar sign or y), and for some fonts (like Times New Roman) all characters disappear... Is this a known problem? Can anyone reproduce the problem? Any ideas on fixing it?

To be quite honest, I really want to be able to use stroke styles more effectively, but there's something I find extremely annoying about having to open such a huge tab just to get an arrow on one end. For that tiny arrow I have to temporarily hide a third of my workspace, often covering part of the lines I'm working on (and I have wide screen). I forgot if this has ever been proposed, but could there ever be a checkbox in tool options or on the side of the tool control bar, where you can click and add options onto the tool control bar? What I'd like to have is a simple set of three drop-downs + dash: [ ] [ ] [ ] Dash: [ ] The drop-downs only show a visual preview of the markers, not the names. I know many people Don't want it, but want options completely different from what I want, thus the toggling options, like "Visible buttons" in Libre Office and other office programs. Can this be achieved simply in GTK right now?

Hi again :) Okay so after previous feedback, that the comboboxes for the fill type and fill rule were not optimal (i.e. it is quicker to click a button than select something from a combobox), I have ammended the mockups, adding back in the buttons. Howto - linker dependent linker flags in makefile - help needed

Hello developers, we run into a little problem while dealing with upcoming gcc 4.6 compatibility. Any help for a "good" solution appreciated. Full story below. But under OSX a native apple darwin compiler is used that do not know this option. Hello I have updated my Cairo branch today, as a step towards merging it. There is one new regression, namely feImage does not handle aspect ratio. It will be fixed before merging. IIRC, there is a problem with CMS output, the editing controls are not using custom XOR blending, and there are build failures on Windows. Does anyone remember any other bugs? Regards, Krzysztof

Faster rounding, might break?

Johan mailed me a link to this site: http://stereopsis.com/sree/fpu2006.html Based on the routine proposed there I just implemented faster rounding in Gaussian blur (the IIR code uses it extensively). In my tests this speeds up blurring by about 10-20%, not insignificant for such a small change. However, the procedure does make use of the internal representation of a double, so I'm a little worried about it breaking on different architectures. If you use a non-Intel architecture it would be great if you could try out the Gaussian blur currently in bzr (it's rev. 10144) and see if anything goes wrong.

I'm probably not the first to suggest this, but why not offer a set of keyboard shortcuts that corresponds (more or less) to the default shortcuts used in Adobe Illustrator? I've worked with Illustrator for years and the shortcuts are second nature to me; I'd like to use Inkscape but learning another set of shortcuts is not exactly appealing.

Thank you. *Proposal:* *Implement KML SVG translation* Both SVG and KML are XML format data which can be used to present marks/paths/polygons/images on map shaped display. They have so many elements in common. SVG format is used on INKSCAPE but KML can be displayed on Google earth. It would be nice to have a tool to convert the two types of data files. Hence it can increase the popularity and generality of INKSCAPE. Since both of them are XML, the best way to transfer the two types of files is to utilize the xsltproc command within the libxslt library. This command reads and converts a defined XSLT transformation template to the desired XML format. The libxslt library has already been implemented and widely used in inkscape. Hence the task in this project is to implement the transformation template of XSLT file. However, there are a few things which need to be brought to our attention before getting started on the XSLT transformation template. 1. Both KML and SVG data can be compressed for saving space. To deal with compressed files, there is an existing library “zlib” in inkscape. It can be used to compress/decompress files to generate a proper format. 2. SVG data displays in 2 dimensions while KML is 3D. SVG data contains graphic effects such as filter, and animation, which is difficult to be represented in KML files. This means only partial information of the source file can be converted to the result file, such as points, images, polygons and lines, etc. 3. The speed of the xsltproc command is relatively slow when processing large data files. If possible, we need to implement some pre-processing logic to the conversion tool to improve performance. *Background and skills* *1. *Development experiences of GPS product for sail boats. This project was done in C++/MFC in windows and embedded c on a pre-designed portable device. The software on Windows could load KML files which contain the sailing waypoints info and it calculates the best sailing routes based on the waypoint info. The software could also send the KML waypoint info to the device via Bluetooth. This project involves the KML parsing, writing and processing. So, I have strong skills in XML and KML. I have done similar KML parsing in C/C++ before. I used Gzip for unzipping binary KML. This project seems relevant and achievable with my skills and experiences. *2. *Game development I worked as Software Engineer with a local company that is a leading game studio (Top 50 in the world) for over 2 years. They are very large games (e.g. NBA 09 Wii, FIFA 10) uses very similar architecture design with Inkscape. It uses C++ and makefile. After browsing Inscape source code, I found similar points to my experiences: - C++ Many years experience. - CMakeLists Research on digital image processing, using open source libs ITK and VTK which are using CMake and CMakeList. - XML GUI approach Experience from work. The internal build tools I used is a wxWidget application which loads the pre-defined XML format gui data. - Wxwidgets - Knowledge of SVG, a type of XML. Feel comfortable working on SVG, e.g. primitives, different shapes, text and fonts. Knowledge of SVG, KML, and open source development from both work and school. *Project goal* KML SVG translation via XSLT - For use of Inkscape with Google Earth or Maps Implement a XSLT template which could convert some useful info between KML and SVG, my current thought is like this: KML < ---- > SVG Points < ---- > circle/dot Lines < ---- > path Polygons < ---- > path Screenoverlay < ---- > image Implement C++ object to do the pre-processing to get rid of any unused nodes or elements, this could increase the performance of the xsltproc in the later step. Implement GUI for this tool. If I have time left, add the support for KMZ and binary SVG by using zlib. Quoted info form Inkscape wiki: Develop a translation (likely XSLT) between KML and SVG so KML files or icons can easily be created, edited, or viewed in Inkscape and for use in Google Earth or Maps. This becomes another piece in utilizing Inkscape's SVG editing capabilities in the geographical community ("geo" Inkscape). Several of us have discussed this as a potential Google Summer of Code project. I would be happy to serve as a mentor. *Implementation planning:* The general approach is to define a XSLT transformation template to convert between KML and SVG. Tool xlstproc will be used from libxlst which is in Inkscape code base already. Defining the convertible element list is the first thing. OpenClipArt importing parse error

Not sure how to go about getting help on this so I am posting here. Inkscape Version: Inkscape 0.48.0 r9654 Problem: Open Clip Art import/search dialogue results do not appear. Error Message: On console, I see the following when searching for "router": % inkscape http://openclipart.org/media/feed/rss/router:1: parser error : StartTag: invalid element name <!doctype html> ^ http://openclipart.org/media/feed/rss/router:1: parser error : Extra content at the end of the document <!doctype html> ^ Suspicion: It would appear that the Open Clip Art web server does not like Inkscape's ":1:" being appended to the query. Setting margins in "Resize page to drawing or selection"

Hi, I needed to add a margin around my drawing and noticed that setting the margin in Document Properties/Resize page didn't work, so I went ahead and looked into the code. I just commited a fix (r10145). Another weird behaviour is that when using the "Resize page to drawing or selection" for the second and subsequent times, only one margin is updated after clicking the button even though I change values in all four (the others are reverted to their remembered values). Of course it's a problem when you want to take the artwork created in Inkscape to other applications (for instance Scribus, which apparently uses 72 dpi for imported SVGs) I'm aware that adding that option (real world units in the type dialog assuming 90dpi) won't be a good long-term solution, but I'm sure it will be well received by a lot of people as an acceptable interim solution. Type size in pixels was reported as a bug several times. Probably people working for web don't care, but designers creating brochures, posters and things that have to end up printed, are more used to DTP points than to any other unit for type. With that change things will be better for that part of the userbase, and won't be worse for anybody, since the real units confusion is already installed with the current implementation in most of the tools.

Hi All, I'm a student considering applying to GSoC for Inkscape, and I'm wondering how you guys feel about multipage support as a project. I asked about this on the IRC channel and it was pointed out to me that multipage support was dropped from SVG 1.2, so the state of this in the SVG standard is kind of up in the air. Is the lack of an official standard a show-stopper? If not, is this even something you'd like to see worked on at this time? Or are there other, more pressing, features or issues that you'd prefer to see applications on? Thanks, Jason

[PATCH] Setting grid origin has no effect (bug #561503)

Hi, I've been looking into the cause of this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/561503 As far as I can tell, the bug is exposed when the spinboxes are initialized in CanvasXYGrid::newSpecificWidget(). (display/canvas-grid.cpp). Starting on line 732 or so, there is a series of calls to setValue() on the origin x/y and the spacing x/y RegisteredScalarUnit instances. These calls to setValue() end up setting the setProgrammatically flag to "true", which is supposed to be immediately cleared in the on_value_changed callback, *BUT* for the origin boxes, the on_value_changed callback is never called, and the flag never gets cleared. The initial value of the spinboxes is "0", and we're setting them to their default of "0", so my guess is that GTK doesn't bother to call on_value_changed in the case that the value hasn't actually changed. So then when the user changes the widget for the first time, it has no effect because the first call to the on_value_changed callback only clears setProgrammatically instead of actually doing anything. I wasn't totally sure about the best way to fix this. It's not clear to me why Scalar::setValue() doesn't just do a "setProgrammatically = false" after the call to the widget's set_value(). It seems like it would be simpler and more robust than clearing it in each callback. However, I assumed that there was some sort of reason I couldn't see for leaving it up to the callbacks to reset it, so my (attached) fix is to make Scalar::setValue() not do anything at all if the new value is the same as the old value. This fixes the issue at hand, however, as su-v pointed out to me on the IRC channel, it seems odd that this isn't a more widespread problem. What about all the other spinboxes that default to zero? I'm not familiar enough with the codebase to know why the bug was only exercised in that particular area. As an aside, what do you guys use to debug Inkscape? I tried just using gdb, but I found that setting breakpoints changed the behavior of the program (!), so I ended up just printing to stdout with debugging info, which is quite tedious. Cheers, Jason

First of all, is anyone using our doxygen docs, or does anyone care about the format? Our current usage is a bit inefficient, so I've been thinking of cleaning it up a bit. First on the hit list are those annoying "@brief" instances. proposal to enhance the python extensions

Hi everyone, I've been lurking on this list and making extensions for Inkscape in python. (I'm also keen on the dbus scripting but I use windows so no good for me right now...) I have had difficulty understanding what some of the extensions do and in writing my own I have discovered the notebook tab. I want to suggest using the notebook tab at the top of each extension to help document how they work. Here is a screenshot of a suggested UI from my Lasercut box extension. http://www.flickr.com/photos/33807726@...2603.../5569339514/ Extra tabs could break up the info for clarity and show data like author,url, etc So I propose: - supply a template for people writing extensions to use as a starter - and some docs/tutorials on making extensions in python - modify the existing extensions included in Inkscape to follow this guideline - maybe fix broken extensions if there are any (I haven't tried every one) But I don't want to do something the dev team thinks is a waste of time, and I am unsure of the translation issues with such an approach. Merging the Cairo branch

Hey, So, I really think that we should entertain the idea of merging the cairo branch into trunk. The plan has been for us to not release 0.49 until it is ready, so the couple outstanding bugs in cairo shouldn't be a huge deterrent. We could also set up a PPA to produce the trunk builds of cairo & pixman so that fixed libs are easily installable in the meantime (at least for people using debian-based systems). I was talking to John Cliff and he put forth a very good point which is that we really need to get as much testing as possible on it prior to a release. Before it gets asked, yes Jon, color management is broken in it atm. The likelihood of it getting fixed in a branch as opposed to trunk is next to non-existent though... So, would people be okay with a little breakage of existing functionality to get more testing of a cairofied Inkscape? bulia, I included you in the to line here to help gauge the acceptability of this proposal. GSoC project ideas

Hello I'm not 100% sure yet whether I'll be able to participate in GSoC 2011, but here are my ideas. They can be used by other potential participants. 1. Selections A lot of functions in Inkscape operate on the current selection. This includes things like moving objects to another layer, creating a bitmap copy, etc. This leads to a lot of unnecessary code duplication when some other function needs to reuse selection-specific logic in a way that is not tied to the UI. It also precludes any useful implementation of scripting (e.g. one that does not need to modify the user's selection every time a script is run). In order to rectify this, we should create an object that represents an arbitrary collection of SVG elements. It would work like the selection we have now, but would not be tied to any UI elements - it would just represent an ordered set of elements that can be passed to functions. 2. Fix flowtext Use svg:switch to fix flowtext. Make svg:switch transparent to the SP tree - e.g. a switch should not have its own SP element, the active part of the switch should be transparently included into the SP tree. This can be accomplished by allowing every object to have more than one representation. 3. Make XML private Discussed before. Was the object of a previous year project, but the main effect of that was mass renaming and moving of code into classes rather than any meaningful improvement in encapsulation. The main thing we need is an ability to create SP nodes. Right now we create XML nodes and rely on SP tree callbacks to construct the SP node for us. 4. Typed XML tree The XML tree stores strings, which is rather wasteful and leads to a lot of boilerplate in SP object implementations. We have enough knowledge about the document at the XML level to know the type of each attribute and CSS property based on its name. Storing parsed values would save space, particularly for embedded images, at the cost of slightly more expensive saving. GVariant could be used. 5. GTK3 compatibility This would involve removal of deprecated code, so that Inkscape compiles with both GTK2 and GTK3. 6. 2geom improvements Move and rewrite code 2geom to the point where it can take over the job of livarot, libavoid, etc. Document the new code and make sure it fits nicely with existing code. The scope of the project could be limited to implementing Boolean operations on paths. 7. Rendering speed improvements Further work on the Cairo branch in several small sub-projects: a) Instead of re-rendering the same pixels every time a new tile of a filter is rendered, cache them until the rendering is done. The implementation could involve allocating screen-size bitmaps for each layer of a filtered object and filling them with data in small increments. b) Render editing controls to a separate image that is composited on top of the drawing, so that what a path outline is highlighted, there is no need to re-render the object under it. c) Render each layer of the drawing to a separate image; alternatively, render 3 images: everything below current layer, current layer and everything above. Anyway, I just wanted to state that I am going to attempt to apply for gsoc sometime late next week. I'm currently trying to get a grasp of the gtkmm wrapper in order to press that knowledge to fixing some bugs and getting those two patches in before April 8, though there's a great chance I won't be able to due to the amount I need to learn. Even if I fail to get that far this soon I will continue attempting to help patch up the code during the summer, whether it with gsoc or not, hopefully I can be of some help. [GSoC] SVG + javascript

Hi inkscape-devels, I've been lurking for a while, but didn't introduce myself yet. I'm Fernando Lucchesi, and I am at my third year studying Computer Engineering at Unicamp, Brazil. I am a member of the CS/CE Students' Union of Unicamp(CACo), where my role is roughly to do "graphical stuff", almost always using inkscape. That includes posters[1], t-shirts, etc. Since I rely on Inkscape so much, it was about time I got to contribute with some code. For that, I am willing to participate on this year's GSoC. (I realize that only using Inkscape doesn't mean I can hack it, but it means I want to see it get even better) Last year, I was playing with SVG/JSONP trying to make a widget to show the cafeteria menu[2]. While doing that, I realized that the javascript support could use some love. Searching a little, I've found this blueprint: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/inkscape/+spec/scripting-ui So I would like to work at something along those lines. I've chatted a little at the Inkscape Brazil mailing list, and already got some pointers. These are the ideas so far: -Enhance "Object properties > interactivity" by replacing the text boxes with combo boxes containing every javascript function/method available. To do that, it would be necessary to parse both external and embedded scripts. -Open embedded scripts on an external editor (perhaps blocking the svg edition while doing that). It would be a way to follow the unix philosophy of using the best tool for every job (inkscape - graphics; vim/emacs/some ide - code). That script list would be located at "document properties > scripting", under the external scripts. As Aurium pointed out, the name of the tmp file would have to be meaningful not to scare the user, so perhaps using the script id could be an option. Also, the way to create new scripts would be at the same interface, you'd just need to define the script name/id at its creation. -At the same place there could be a list of svg elements using script events. -We could encourage people to use .js files for scripts, since it is good practice to separate the structure from the action (like with html/js). The problem, however, is that by doing that there would be 2+ files instead of a single svg, making the distribution more difficult. As a way to solve that, inkscape could have an option to automatically embed external scripts, so there would be only one file. There should be some config regarding scripts on another server (so you don't save a static version of JSONP data, for example). Then, there would be the opposite direction, taking the embedded scripts out to the corresponding .js files. This wouldn't be restricted to scripts previously inserted by inkscape, but all embedded scripts. The name of each file to be created would be asked, except for those that came from a .js in the first place, since its name would be saved on the tag. Another option is to use the id defined by the other interface instead of asking. So, how could this fit into a GSoC project? (I'm yet to send the 2 patches, but I've already pulled the code from bazaar, successfully compiled it and am having a look at the bugs at launchpad). Brightness and Lightness

Hi all The latest inkscape.pot update draw my attention on the terms "Brightness" and "Lightness". I supposed they were the same, but according to the filter names "Brightness, custom (color)" en "Lightness, custom (color)" in the menu "Filters" > "Experimental", there is a difference between brightness and lightness. Some progress on OSX/aqua, and how to go further?

Hi, I have made some little progress in a local branch on an OSX?aqua version of inkscape. I would like to know what the best way is to give these changes back to inkscape. Many patches? A branch on launchpad? Would a branch ~gellule-xg/inkscape/aqua work for now? Can it be made available to others later, before a merge back in master? So far, I have workarounds for: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/487144 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/721448 I am also able to get rid of the launcher script used for the X11 version and put the inkscape executable directly in the application bundle. I have also started using ige-mac-integration to determine the correct paths to use throughout inkscape. I am currently working on the relocation of the libraries into the application package, one step before the production of the disk image. Is anyone familiar with install_name_tool and the -headerpad_max_install_name or -headerpad linker flags? I might need a little help there. -Gellule/Julien

Missing libgomp-1.dll from mingw

Recently I get this error when compiling under Windows XP: Make error line 708: copy : file /c:/mingw/bin/libgomp-1.dll does not exist I have a file with the same name under mingw\lib\gcc\mingw32\bin: is it the same that has been moved for some reason? Latest try with rev 10122 (devlibs 21). After a break of a few months I tried to get inkscape to compile again over the weekend but ran into a strange issue. Inkscape compiles just fine, but if I try to run it it crashes immediately (and yes, I've done several clean builds by now). Unfortunately I'm not at my laptop right now, so I can't give you the exact error, but I'm wondering whether anyone has had a similar issue and/or knows something else I could try. I'm using TDM's GCC 4.5.1 (sjlj, and I have also tried the 64 bit version, but that fails to build inkscape at some point) on Vista, and there are no other mingw installations present (anymore). The source is unmodified, I have updated devlibs and I have done a clean build. I have also downloaded a "nightly" build for a slightly older revision (the latest I could find), and although that worked fine, updating my source to the same revision and doing a clean build of that did not. I've even tried moving my inkscape.exe into the folder of the downloaded nightly build, without success. Interestingly just running inkscape(.com) seems to do nothing... (No crash, no output, no Inkscape, nothing.) The crash is pretty much immediately after startup and seems to come from loading(?) lcms, but according to gdb's backtrace it crashes from some function having to do something with (stack?) frames (sorry, don't have the details with me at the moment). I googled it, and it appears this function is somehow associated with relocation of dll's. So, sound familiar to anyone? Any ideas for what else to try? I also think the "sprint" idea is a really good one, while donators vote for "top wanted features" to be coded during the sprint. It could also be helpful to do the following for each feature: 1. Note what needs to be done (what needs to be implemented). This is to give donators an idea of what they're "paying" for (they deserve to know when the feature isn't That simple to code), but also so that potential developers who don't know how to contribute could see the top listed features easily and know where to start. 2. Estimate roughly how much work it'd take (at least try to note if it'd take a long time or just a couple of hours). If you organise a sprint, this means donators will better understand why Feature X hasn't been completed yet (because it takes "1000 man-hours" to finish all the dependencies). 3. Also describe clearly what the feature does and how the user benefits. Inkscape features can be pretty technical (Cairo), but users will understand if you say "You can use it to accomplish [cool effects]/[serious office work]/[compatibility with other software]/etc., or "It will speed up parts of Inkscape by 20%." Or even "doing this will allow us to then implement Feature Y that all of you want." 4. Progress should be documented clearly, like on a blog or such. 5. As an alternative to sprints, some or all developers could agree to all commit to working on the top feature (without meeting up), either periodically or when total donations reach a certain milestone. I'll also mention as a side note that although bounties never worked for Gimp and Inkscape, paid development did work for Krita last year. What they did was get a developer (Lukáš Tvrdý) to develop for Krita full-time during several months thanks to donations. Krita has a blog, so every week work on Krita development, including Lukáš', was documented (when money is involved, transparency is important). You can read the log on krita.org (start from the last page). Lukáš coded and improved several brushes engines, improved speed, fixed lots of bugs, etc. I think anybody who observed the progress will agree that Huge progress was made thanks to that, it was very exciting to read week after week. Of course, it's not an arrangement for everyone, it just happened that a capable developer could be made to work full time on Krita thanks to donations, so it can't necessarily be reproduced for Inkscape. It's just an example of donations that can work, in case you decide not to go for a sprint.

Changing path libgomp in build.xml

I noticed that with the latest TDM MingW libgomp-1.dll isn't in the location where build.xml expects it. But I'm not sure in what version this change (I assume it changed) was made, nor which versions of MingW other developers are using. Assuming that most developers will eventually update their MingW (if they haven't already), I think it would make sense to change it in BZR, or am I missing something? (If no one starts protesting I'll make the change in a day or so.) For reference, the old location was: ${mingw}/lib/gcc/mingw32/bin/libgomp-1.dll The new location is: ${mingw_bin}/libgomp-1.dll

A couple of days ago I mentioned to Prokoudine an idea that probably is worth to discuss. It's a known fact that bounties never worked for Inkscape and GIMP, but that doesn't mean necessarily that money wouldn't help. What is needed is to find a different way to use the money that comes from donations and could come from companies (like linux vendors, for instance). This isn't a new idea. It's just a mix of some ideas that already work (crowd funding, GSoC, hacking sprints, etc). Instead of picking individual feature requests, developers could make a list of targets, following project's roadmap. In that point community (and companies interested) could express their needs and wishes, and project active developers could decide if some of those requests fit with the existing plans. Once a targets lists is created and cleaned up, developers should make an estimation of time and people needed to reach those targets. The idea is to group those targets in small "packs" so it's not too ambitious to expect their completion in a limited period of time. Also in that stage would be good to define if more people than the available is needed, and what upstream projects are connected to the planned goals in order to contact their mantainers and communicate what would be needed and in what timeframe. Once that information is ready and available publicly, then money comes into play. People can start to donate and companies could be contacted to get sponsoring. That money wouldn't be used to pay for features. The idea is to organize a hacking sprint, giving developers a chance to meet and more importantly, companies could lend developers who could benefit from having core and active developers in a common physical space to ask them about project particularities. This would be also a good opportunity to document code and details that could be useful for other developers in the future. I think this could refresh the motivation of existing developers and attract new people, while at the same time it could make companies commit to the development of graphic applications. After all, having quality applications is what free operative systems need to reach more people and be more interesting to users, so this could be a good opportunity for linux vendors. I know this is just an idea and it making it work it won't be as easy as talking, but at least I'm interested to know what developers and the rest of the community thinks about it. Is it possible? Could it work for projects like Inkscape, GIMP or Scribus?

Anyone willing to help with testing/reviewing? IMHO this would fix an annoying issue with linked offsets. Extensions - Slider in Int and Float widgets

Hello, Revision 10103 adds horizontal sliders to the Int and Float extension widgets in order to make parameters a bit easier to handle. It perfectly fits large numbers (colors or angles related values) but may be less efficient with small range parameters (as in the SVG calendar extension). Thus I've implemented two modes (mimicking the radiobutton parameter), full (default, with slider) and minimal (no slider) that can be used by adding an appearance="<mode>" attribute to the int or float element in the inx file or internal extension structure. The size of the slider is the same for all widgets, 200px (about the same as the sliders used in Gimp). Please test and comment! Regards, -- Nicolas

Command line interface on Windows

Hi Inkscape community, Thanks for the app, it is proving to be very useful. For whatever reason, the .NET framework does not include any kind of SVG handling -- so Inkscape has been endlessly useful. I'm using it for a pretty simple purpose - converting SVG files to PNG or JPEG images. I'm just following the instructions from the FAQ to let the devs of our common usage of the CLI. possible save dialog bugs on Windows

I'm only seeing it on a single machine at work, but please take the time to see if you can reproduce it. perhaps it's just that one machine. I waited for 48.1 just to be sure it's not already solved but it seems like I still have this problem: When I create a new file and then attempt to save it, I have to explicitly add the "svg" extension. If I don't, the file is saved without an extension. Another issue I see on all both home and office machines: When I do a "Save As...", the save dialog opens with the file name field empty, when in most other applicatios it contains the current file name. Both issues are on Windows, I haven't tested on my Linux partition yet.

Gimp, Scribus, Inkscape and our sK1 already faced with this problem. CorelDRAW has passed this milestone in ver.10 I think you remember that we have presented Cairo-based rendering in sK1 on LGM2007 and since that time we have a lot of experience in this issue (whereas "cairofication" for Inkscape is upcoming feature). Using this experience I would say that "cairofication" doesn't resolve all Inkscape rendering problems because Cairo (at least current stable version) is not fast. Concerning our project we have decided reimplementing sK1 and UniConvertor from scratch because the further development of just stuck in the architectural issues. The Wikipedia entry, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dot_Dot_Dot_(magazine) points to http://www.dot-dot-dot.us which looks more like something, but the site doesn't display well in Internet Explorer (Intentional?) and doesn't have much functionality in Firefox. Hello, here's an update on the website. We have made some nice progress and it is defiantly coming along. It's going to be launched in phases. Phase #1 will be the main site with all the content and Phase 2 will consist of various things for the user allowing them to be able to post their own tutorials and plugins etc. However in order to do that we need help! We need the following: 1. content writers to go through the site and improve on the existing write ups. 1. Additional old news needs to be ported over. We ported over all of 2010 and 2011 but we need all news ported over 2. --query-all and hidden objects

Hi guys, When a group's children are all hidden (style="display:none"), --query-all command line parameter does not list this group's geometry. All of its children are listed. But not the parent. Another observation is that if one of the children is visible, then the parent's geometry is listed. Is there a specific reason for this feature? Or is it a bug? Thanks! -- -- V. Hello again! This evening I have been working hard to update the Tango Pasodoble icon theme for Inkscape. The original theme have no icons for the new tools and options and some icons has changed his name. In the future I would appreciate so much you notify me (sending an e-mail to the mailing list, for example) any change in the icons.svg main file (change of names, new icons, etc.) because it is very difficult to compare icons.svg and tango.svg icon by icon, name by name. The easy way to use the Tango Pasodoble Icons is downloading this file: http://www.jesusda.com/files/inkscape-tango-theme/tango_icons_new_0.48.1_v0… There are two folders: 16 and 24. You must copy the icons inside the 16 folder and paste then into your desktop icon theme ACTIONS folder for 16px icons (do the same for 24). Inkscape will load the icons from your desktop icon theme. ;) This option is only for Linux users. I know the icon topic was disscussed time ago, but I think we must do anithing about this: the default icon theme is not so pretty. It does not brings users the hi-quality appearance Inkscape has inside. I know is so difficult to decide and change the icons. I know the tango pasodoble icon theme could be better, but we has no other options. It is great that Inkscape could load the icon from our desktop icon theme, but what abou Mac and Windows users? It will be a nice idea to allow users select the theme via preferences or simply use the tango icon theme as a default one. I don't think you're missing that much, I'm not 100% sure, but it looks like a numerical problem somewhere. Specifically, for some reason Inkscape seems to convert a perfectly straight line segment into a curved segment when outsetting (even if you explicitly convert to a straight line segment first, so that there is no chance that it's almost straight or anything), that seems a bit odd. On my installation (0.48) it seems like it's mostly just the left tooth(?) at the top, although similar effects play up when insetting. Interestingly dynamic offset seems to do better, but it also clearly gives a different result (it rounds cusp corners). But if that's okay for you that might be a way out. In any case, you might want to file a bug report. To do so, please go to: http://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/ and click on "Report a bug" (it's on the right). Partial clip-rule implementation

I don't know what the standard way to submit patches is, but I've attached a patch that implements loading, saving, and computing of the clip-rule property. I'm playing with getting it to work in the cairo renderer. It's a bit of a pain for two reasons. First, the existing fill-rule implementation for clip paths is not just incorrect (fill-rule shouldn't affect clip paths) but is also very buggy. Second, I don't know how to ask cairo to generate a clipping region that is the union of two paths unless both paths use the nonzero rule. That being said, I have a gross hack that at least gets multiple nonzero paths or a single evenodd path right. I'll make it less ugly before I mail it in. I understand approximately nothing about the nr renderer (or whatever the code that I assume renders the editing view is), so I've made no progress on honoring clip-rule in the edit view. What should I do from here? (Note: I'm not really inclined to try to invent a sensible UI for clip-rule. I mainly want to be able to edit my own figures that need clip-rule=evenodd. --Andy

printing - rendering bitmaps

Hello everybody, I hope folks will apologize me asking for simpe end-user advice: When calling the "printing" dialog, there is a tab "rendering". There I can select "vector" or "bitmap" and set the resolution for the bitmap. As I want to print a self-made map with a scan in the background, the "bitmap" option seems reasonalble to me. But lowering the resolution doesnt make any difference, files are as big as they are when I leave the "rendering" tab set to "vector". Is that a bug - or is my assumtion wrong, that this tab should have an influence to the resolution of embedded bitmaps? (Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard, inkscape 0.48 X11) Thanks and greetings, Wolf

Hi Guys, (I apologise if I sent this to the wrong list and if so, if you could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful :] ) My name is Andrew and I have been using Inkscape for quite a while and have always found it fantastic! One thing I have found though, is that while some parts of Inkscape are brilliantly designed, some legacy parts you use a new lick of paint and a polish :) One such part is the part I use most, the Fill and Stroke Dialog. The code is stand-alone (although the aem stuff has been more or less coded with Inkscape in mind) and does not accept file based definitions, the images are hard coded (although relatively easy to alter, I just didn't get around to writing a parser). For integration with Inkscape there are still quite a few things missing, like syntax :) Also, I don't think the method I developed is mature enough to put in Inkscape as is. In my opinion the quickest route to get this in Inkscape would be to figure out a syntax+semantics (how to deal with "exterior" boundaries!) and then write a hybrid solver that uses an analytic solution for dealing with discontinuities and a grid-based solver for the rest. Another question is whether diffusion curves are really the "best" way to go about this. There are some cases where diffusion curves might not give the most intuitive answer and I am looking at alternatives (and so are some other people). If you have specific ideas about what a system like this should support and/or have interesting cases where you feel diffusion curves do not meet your requirements (or where they perform surprisingly well), then please speak up. Custom predefined filters

Hello, Ivan Louette and I have started to work on new custom predefined filters that should make filters use and creation a bit easier. It's not a full filters UI redesign, but only internal extension system based dialogs that provide easy understandable parameters to the existing predefined filters. Now that we have a minimal usable test set (25 available filters in Filters>Experimental), we'd like some comments on this project, and more specifically a *formal* approval that we are heading in the right direction. The project has a Launchpad Blueprint (https://blueprints.launchpad.net/inkscape/+spec/custom-predefined-filters) and a specification wiki page (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/SpecCustomPredefinedFilters). Question about modifying the code for the curve tool

Greets! I'm new here. :) Earlier today I had an idea for an improvement to the curve drawing tool that would speed up my drawing workflow considerably and make it a lot more practical to draw things quickly and precisely with a mouse. Here's what I was thinking: When you're editing a curve, there's a button on the toolbar that sets the nodes along the curve to "auto-smooth". I discovered this a couple of days ago and instantly fell in love with it. At any rate, I was thinking it would be really nice to be able to draw auto-smoothed points with the curve drawing tool, perhaps by holding shift when you click the button, or holding shift, then clicking, dragging, and releasing. Non-auto-smoothed points are great if you want fine control, but if you're trying to lay down some clean-looking curves quickly, auto-smoothing seems to be the way to go. It would be really nice if I could draw them as I go, rather than just clicking the mouse and crating line segments, then going back and converting all of them. Hopefully I'm making sense so far. :) At any rate, I thought I'd poke around the 0.48 code and see if I could implement this feature myself, but I ran into an issue. Specifically, it appears that the code for drawing a curve initially adds points directly into the underlying curve data structure, whereas the code that distinguishes between normal curve points and auto-smoothed points is actually part of the user interface, and not part of the curve itself. Thus, when you add a point onto a curve, there doesn't appear (at least not at first glance) to be a way to easily get hold of the Node object and set it to auto-smooth mode. Here's what I've gleaned from looking at the code thus far: When you add a point by clicking the mouse button, it happens around pen-context.cpp:1272, where it calls pc->red_curve->curveto(...). The node type, however, is actually set from the MultiPathManipulator class, which I don't appear to have access to in pen-context.cpp. Is there a simple way of doing this? Also, kudos for writing code that's clear enough that I have some idea of what's going on after looking at it for half an hour. :) Peace, Bart K. http://opengameart.org -- --

win32 console absolute paths not working

It seems that console (command-line) use of inkscape.exe to export pdf/ps/etc fails with an absolute path on Win32. This happens with SVG files from at least Visio and Dia. (I haven't checked other input formats of flavors of svg.) I use Cygwin on XP, and I discovered this when using dblatex for converting DocBook5 XML to PDF (when dblatex sees an SVG file referenced in XML it calls inkscape using absolute paths). When I test inkscape alone it clearly succeeds on relative paths but fails on absolute paths. (Note that if you want to try this yourself then you have to patch imagedata.py because it calls inkscape with in/out files mixed up -- see: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=3039592&group_id=7… ) I've tried your official/stable win32 installer v0.48, earlier v0.46, and nightly build 0.48+devel r10061 (Feb 21 2011). I also tried setting pythonpath, and other variables, and have made sure my shell knows which inkscape/python combo to use.
