I thought that everytime a update affecting the translations is made, the one who did it should use the webform to tell the translators to update that. Webmasters should be encouraged to filter webform messages to a special folder, maybe. But you can never expect that all translations will be up-to date within 24h. On many pages, there will be english messages if no translation is available (e.g. screenshots, news, status) As i am pretty new, i don't know how the changes to download.php look like. If there are mostly updates to links, then i'd suggest to place them in variables in download.php and <?php echo $lnk_release ?> in the include files. caliga

Generating improved EPS/PDFs for transparent bitmaps before PS/PDF supports transparency

I wonder if you've considered an interim solution to generating better EPS files and PDFs for Inkscape drawings with transparent bitmaps. I would like to run and idea past you. I am unfamiliar with Inkscape from a developers perspective, so it may be worthless. In case it's not, here goes. If we exclude bitmaps which are rotated or skewed, it seems that one could use Inkscape's SVG -> bitmap capability (demonstrated by the PNG export) to resolve the transparency and generate a resolved bitmap that could be used instead of the original tranparent bitmap when producing the EPS/PDF. If a transparent bitmap covers the rectangle defined by its corners (x1, y1) to (x2,y2), you can calculate the dots per inch of the in the x and y dimension taking into account any scaling applied by the user. Use Inkscape to render a bitmap of the rectangle (x1,y1) to (x2, y2) at the maximum of resolution (perhaps min {300, max {x_resolution, y_resolution}}). Use this bitmap instead of the orignal when creating the PDF. Of course, this idea can be improved upon. For example during the bitmap rendering phase, it would be better to render only the bitmap and elements below it (i.e., things that could actually appear in the transparent parts of the bitmap and not things above). If SVG's bitmap renderer can have different x and y resolutions, match the original bitmaps x and y resolutions. Alternatively, you could render the bitmap at a higher resolution to make sure the background elements that show through the transparent parts appear smooth at reasonable printing resolutions. I suppose you could even handle scaled, rotated and skewed bitmaps by rendering at high resolution a box that includes the whole scaled, rotated and/or skewed bitmap. Then take the resolved bitmap and undo the scale, skew and/or rotation to generate an unperturbed bitmap that when scaled, rotated and/or skewed will produce the contents that the renderer produced. I am guessing that in 90% of the situations, bitmaps aren't rotated or skewed, so it may not be worth solving the general problem. Well, what do you think? I recently made a poster with a radial gradient as the background and several logos (tranparent bitmaps) were on top of the gradient. I ended up exporting as a high resolution PNG, converting to TIFF and then converting TIFF2PDF. Inkscape looks like a fine program. Tom

Also, I noticed when running your test suite that it gives a couple warnings on lines 62 and 66 about uninitialized values. Not sure what's causing that. Oh, and regarding the downloading of files from SF, thanks for the advice, you're right, and I'm re-thinking the approach for that. I may be able to do it directly to a mirror, without any need for screenscraping, which would be superior for obvious reasons. Bryce

--new-canvas?

Hello, regarding C++ification, I've reached a point with Desktop where the class would be suited for inclusion in a Gtkmm environment, were it not for its dependency on SPCanvas etc We have now three possibilities: 1. forget about Desktop, incrementally improve the code in UI::View::Edit, first by separating Edit into Edit/EditWidget. After that, steal from Desktop what's needed. 2. Separate EditWidget from Edit. Discard rest. Rename Desktop to Edit. 3. Before worrying about 1/2, implement Gtkmm canvas under Desktop, enabling it via --new-canvas for testing. After that, goto 2. I have questions for those in the know: Is it technically possible to have everything as is, plus only a Gtkmm canvas? If so, would you prefer having a Gtkmm canvas tested first, instead of the Gtkmm UI? I have made a branch CXXIFICATION_VIEW_AND_WIDGET for work until now. As the next steps might not fit this description, should I create a second one GTKMM_CANVAS and merge them back later separately? (This appears cleaner to me.) ralf

Ich habe mir das Programm auf meinem Rechner gespielt, weil das was ich gelesen (im internet) habe sich gut anhörte für mich. Da ich aber kein Fachmann bin sende ich euch meine Probleme. Pls. read that they state Win98 as a "obsolte os where apperantly no developer is interested anymore." I dont know wether this is the voice of the whole gtk devel group or yust this one person. So what is our plan ? Can anyone give some feedback on the status of the code inside src/dom ? How much works is still to be done to have xpath support working? I noticed that xpathimpl.cpp is actually just a stub, so I suppose that there's some work left to do... is anyone working on this? -- lode

I'm working on getting the roadmap up to date for us. Assuming that we shoot for the usual 2-3 month development cycle for 0.44, what things are people hoping to focus on working on? Three features that have come up repeatedly in this thread are interapplication cut/paste, layer dialog, and ps/eps/pdf import support. Is anyone interested in working on one of those features for 0.44? If we could get progress made on one or two of those features for the next release I think it would make a good achievement. Bryce

Libre Graphics Meeting

Hi all, A few weeks back, I sent a call to arms for a conference I'm organising with David Odin in Lyon next March. Since then, a lot's happened - we've confirmed the dates and location - CPE Lyon, the 17/18/19 March 2006. And we've started assembling a line-up. The main purpose of the conference is to get the developers of different projects in the same place, and talking. The other main purpose of the conference is to have the developers of those projects meet their users (and vice versa), and in general to chill out, maybe get some work done, and have a good time. Jon Phillips will be giving a talk on Inkscape, OpenClipart and creative commons, someone from Blender will be coming to present Project Orange (I hope), and there will also be presentations of Scribus from mrdocs and MrB, and the GIMP, although I don't know by whom yet. The current plan is to have 2 very light days of presentations on Friday and Saturday, and to consecrate Sunday completely to impromptu BOFs, hackfests, demos, brainstorming sessions, whatever happens. Should be fun, and I'd really like to see a good showing for Inkscape. Can people interested in attending please add their names to teh GIMP wiki at http://wiki.gimp.org/gimp/LibreGraphicsMeeting (we'll have a better site soon). I'm releasing another version of the clip art browser. Lots of bug fixes, some performance improvements, code cleanups, and a new installation procedure (yes, yet another). Installation is now 3 steps, and hopefully easier than ever: 1) Satisfy the dependencies of Python 2.4 and PyGTK 2.6. 2) Download and run the following script, which installs the python setuptools: http://peak.telecommunity.com/dist/ez_setup.py 3) Run "easy_install clipartbrowser" As you can see, I've switched the installation system from Makefiles to the python setuptools. The setuptools are still under development (they're apparently going to be included in python 2.5), and I'm still very much learning how to use them, so the packaging isn't as polished as it needs to be, but this makes installation a breeze. Eventually, it should allow arbitrary python dependencies to be intelligently installed as well using the same process. I'm still working on getting this integrated back into the Inkscape effects menu, that's next on the list. As always, feedback greatly appreciated. Greg

Hard Freeze Lifted: insufficient stability

Existing show-stoppers will take sufficient amount of time, and will involve sufficiently non-trivial bug fixes, that it is more productive to lift the hard freeze for the moment. However, the feature freeze remains. Currently, our best plan for making a release soon involves backing out (or at least disabling) the following changes: - SPDesktop C++ification. This transformation was too rushed; has introduced at least two show-stoppers. Clean-up changes are good, but should be done cautiously, e.g. by breaking into small changes that can each be verified with reasonable confidence. The SPDesktop change has demonstrated itself not to be safe, so we'll back it out. - Connectors. Michael is now back from overseas and can work on this, but its current state (with crashes) isn't releasable. - menus.xml. Introduces menu localization problem. It has been useful in allowing ppl to play with the menu layout, but there's no particular reason for the functionality to be in the released stable version: it is currently for experimenters rather than customizers, as the file format still doesn't handle when menu items get added or removed from the default menu layout (e.g. new or changed functionality). Most remaining bugs are either not regressions (so don't present a reason not to replace 0.42.2); or are platform-specific (so I can't test whether they're regressions or not, and we could consider updating inkscape on other platforms in any case); or have a priority number lower than about 7 so I've assumed they aren't show-stoppers. (I forget whether I've looked at all priority-7 bugs or not.) pjrm.

Colin felt that we can only use "better fitting" terms if the english ones are also adapted... i think, terms should be self-explanatory, if possible. live shape for example: if you translate that to german and back you might get lifeform ;) well, i know Nortons live update also doesn't improve health, but anyway, a direct translation is impossible So, here are some suggestion of me: live shape -> dynamic shape (because it is similar to dynamic offset) dynamic offset -> dynamic object/form/shape well, maybe live shapes and dynamic offsets should not have the same name, but still they act similar. but "object with dynamic outline" is a bit cumbersome. linked offset this is hard. i'd name it "linked dynamic object" or "controlled dynamic objekt" even more "dynamic object (controlled)" because it is just the same than the parent object, plus it can be controlled by the parent object. maybe the objects name could be "dynamic object (controlled)" and the menu entry "create controlled dynamic object" or "derive controlled dynamic object" also this menu entry should only be available if a dynamic object is selected, but this may be a different topic ;) inset/outset (this is more a german problem, we just couln't find an appropriate translation) also not so simple, as "shrink" / "expand" (current german translation, there is no in/outset in german) do not really tell, that this is not a resize. Is that correct, that this scales orthogonal to the normal? how could this be expressed? a few days ago we voted for "aussenkontur/innenkontur", meaning sth. like "outer/inner contour" but now i think this is wrong, as is does not create a new outline, but scale the original object. hm... new ideas: path -> translate outwards ("nach außen versetzen" oder "nach außen setzen") path -> translate inwards ("nach innen versetzen" oder "nach innen setzen") path -> expand ("expandieren" oder "nach außen erweitern") path -> collapse ( ??? oder "nach innen ???) well... maybe we can just leave that one... colin: i just thought we could return to "schrumpfen" and "ausdehnen" but in fact, not the path is shrinked, but the surrounded area: more slim/slenderize ("schlanker"/"abnehmen") and rise ("zunehmen") another thing is, that inset/outset does not reflect that it is similar to the dynamic offset (or better dynamic object) phew... enough said and done for today... As there was some talk about exporting to different formats, i'd like to thow in another one... OASIS came in my mind. the open document format. Karbon14 uses it yet and i'd guess OpenOffice's drawing app also will. This may not be an important goal, as the format is not popular yet, but still i think inkscape should support it sooner or later. But maybe we don't need to bother about that and get that ability from the Uber-Converter. ;) caliga

I just committed a conversion of the whole UI::View::View hierarchy over to the collector -- you can't do leaf classes individually and have it work right. Has to be everything in the hierarchy. Not 100% sure I got the code straight because it was a very quick job, but I think so. I'll keep testing. Important thing for everyone to realize: just like refcounted GObjects and so forth, GC::Anchored objects start with a "refcount" of one. No need to refcount them a second time after you create them. I've made this even more explicit in the CG::Anchored documentation which I would encourage everyone to read... -mental

I just had a look at the SPDesktop code and noticed that you're not inheriting from GC::Anchored anymore. That's not safe. Without the anchor, how is the garbage collector supposed to know that the SPDesktop shouldn't be collected while the desktop widget still references it? Remember that the desktop widget isn't and can't be managed by the collector itself... If you do switch to manual allocation with the collector like that in the future, please also switch to GC::Managed<GC::SCANNED, GC::MANUAL> instead of GC::Managed<>, so the object won't get automatically collected. (GC::Managed defaults to SCANNED and AUTO) -mental

What is proper transform/scaling behavior?

Thanks again for Inkscape, it really rocks. Does anyone know what the proper behavior is for scaling objects via transform attributes? Is the stroke supposed to be scaled or not? I figured there would be just one answer, but the svg-rendering programs are all over the map here: http://web.mit.edu/jonas/www/anisotropy/ I ran into this when looking at the PS & PDF output of both Inkscape and Batik; at first it appeared to be caused by people assuming SVG's transformation matrices worked the same way as ps, but then I can't quite figure out what the hell the Adobe SVG viewer is doing... So I'm curious to know what the Right behavior is, or if this is an ambiguous region in the standard... Thanks again, inkscape is amazing... ...Eric

Status bar help texts visibility

Hi, last June there was a thread in this list regarding the visibility of the status bar texts. Sometimes the text string is too long to be seen completely, especially on smaller screens. Has there been any more discussion on this issue? Should I file an RFE. I also made a mockup of a possible solution to this problem; a kind of "frame" that can be toggled visible/invisible when necessary by clicking a button or using a keyboard shortcut. Hi, With the chance of being told to RTFM (whats an M anyway?, I still havent read the Scribus ones!).. Where is the/Is there a Convert Text to Path option in Inkscape? (0.42.2) Why? Because importing text in an SVG into Scribus is ugly, due to a) limitations with our text frame sizes, b) PostScript vs SVG text definitions (IIRC). TIA Craig Scribus Team

Hi all, Okay, it sounds like from the earlier discussions that there is a rough concensus to do 0.43 as 100 points worth of RFE's followed by 100 points of bug fixes, then a hard freeze, and so on through the release. I'm going to start counting from Sept 1st for the RFE's, and will begin counting bugs as soon as we hit 100. Should be fun. :-) I'm curious to see how swiftly we can reach the hard freeze point. Hi, Looking at roadmap I realised that with current extensions infrastructure there should be just one simple step to have pdf2svg import - to write an inx file and to put pdf2svg files in right places. I thiunk I have succeded with the first part, but failed with the other. When I try to import a PDF file, Inkscape tells me: Can't locate Math/Matrix.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /etc/perl /usr/local/lib/perl/5.8.7 /usr/local/share/perl/5.8.7 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.8 /usr/share/perl/5.8 /usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at /usr/share/perl/5.8/Parser.pm line 20. Inkscape 0.42.2-0 static RPM package

Hello, Better late than never, they say. Anyway, I've set up a static build environment today and tested it on the previous Inkscape release. The resulting static RPM installs and works fine on my RPM-based distro (SuSE LInux 9.3). It would be great if it could be tested on other systems, though. Well, I suppose that means I'm volunteering for the creation of static RPMs from now on :-) Now, should I upload inkscape-0.42.2-0.static.i686.rpm to SourceForge right away or should I just don't bother and wait for the 0.43 release? Anyway since I've realised it's only 2.5K, the entire list can now see what a mess it is. All my work was done with version 12 files, but since the UI of CorelDraw hasn't changed fundamentally since version 9 at least (and in fact I can name some bugs that have been around since then too) I'd be surprised if the file format has changed. The large differences you're seeing are almost certainly due to the compression (zlib) which will have the effect of magnifying even a one byte change (eg a creation timestamp). Richard.

Scribus cmdline import/export (patch)

Hi Peter and Craig, A while back we discussed an idea of packaging the scribus pdf/ps import/export code for use with Inkscape, since Inkscape's pdf/ps (esp. EPS import) support is so poor. However it occurs to me that another solution would be to simply give scribus some commandline options for doing import/export. E.g. scribus -i filename.eps -e filename.svg Inkscape would then be able to make use of scribus' import/export capabilities via its extension mechanism. Since for all practical intents and purposes, people would need to use scribus for getting eps/pdf converted to svg for use in inkscape already anyway, I don't think this imposes much additional dependency hassle for them. I looked into the scribus code a bit to see how this could be implemented. I wasn't sure how to call the import/export plugins, but I sketched out the code for handling the -i/-e commandline options as a start... See the attached patch. I put TODO's where the code to invoke the import/export plugins would go. I think that if it supported command line options for your input/output operators, scribus would become more widely useful, especially for commercial users (look at http://www.pdftron.com/store.html). With the completion of the bug party today, it is time to move into the hard freeze for Inkscape 0.43, under the watch of our release wardens pjrm and joncruz. Today's testing unfortunately did not cover all of the new features, but we did manage to bang on the connector code really hard, and scared up a number of bugs in it (no showstoppers, but a couple crashes and a lot of odd behaviors.) We attempted to get the inkboard feature working, but did not succeed in establishing a working connection, so there's at least one bug there... We closed about 10 bugs today, mostly invalid/dupe/outdated, but there were a few fixes. pjrm and joncruz will be the release wardens for this release. All changes to the codebase must go through them. Do not commit to CVS; instead post your changes as patches to the tracker with your rationale for why to include them before or after the 0.43 release. Peter and Jon will decide when the codebase is ready for release. This may include requiring specific bugs be fixed, or tasks to be done. I will continue to track tasks for the 0.43 release, but it will be up to them whether to wait until all those tasks are complete or to decide we are ready to release with some tasks still unfinished. Okay, I made a couple changes to the Makefile.PL and moved the .pm's into the lib dir and the script into the scripts/ dir, where they should go. Also I fixed up the authors list (good of you to include all of them!) This package installs ok on my machine. I had installed all my prerequisites like this: # cpan -i Math::Matrix # cpan -i Text::PDF::File # cpan -i PDF::API2 Then I could run pdf2svg. Again though, my results with it were not very good. Probably these issues could be fixed, however it would require knowledge of Perl to do so. I think it may be better to focus on using Scribus for PDF import instead though. What do you think? inkscape crashes and freezes gdb when clicking on a square that is rotating

Hi in inkscape cvs when I create a square and start rotating it with ] and while it is rotating i click on it, 50% of the time inkscape segfaults. As it does it also freezes my terminal. Because of that I couldn't really make a bug report since I have to switch to ctrl+alt+f1 and kill gdb from it and all my output disappears.

Bugs making it hard to translate tutorials

Hi! While i translated the basic tutorial i came across some things. Some are caused by KDE, some might be bugs, some are caused by my german keyboard layout. As there will be customizable keybindings, some problems might dissolve gracefully... :) There should be default keybindings for different keyboardlayouts then. Well, here are the trouble makers: :) - There is no gradient tool if i press ctrl-f1 - the edit menu should contain the Esc key for unselcting all. - alt+klick does not work with kde, its used there. if its possible, id override the kde setting. if not, there should be a second way to do that. Maybe Alt-Gr. (meta?) - i cant use ` or shift- ` ... in fact, i need to press shift to create an ` . Hard to press Shift+` if you need shift to create ` :) so, no zooming with that key! if we will have localized defaults, id recommend our # / ' key or the ä/ö keys for german. - rotate slow with shift+[ ] does not work. i need to use alt-gr+8 or 9 for [ ]. maybe that causes trouble. oh, btw... we could scale in one direction with crtl-alt+numpad... RFE for that? :) hm... and shift to scale in two directions? okay... think that was it... Caliga

Im Quelltext werden die Umlaute natürlich nur mit einem UTF-8 fähigen Editor korrekt angezeigt. Ich bitte zu beachten, dass UTF-8 nichts mit HTML-Entities zu tun hat. (wie & auml; o.ä.) Xara / SVG translator project

Got some good news... Eric Wilhelm, developer of the Uber-Converter and member of the Inkscape community, is being sponsored by Xara to develop a graphics converter to allow Xara and Inkscape users to more easily share documents. Xara's full press release is here: http://www.xara.com/press/pressrelease.asp This tool will benefit both Xara and Inkscape. Xara will gain support for an important graphics file format quickly becoming a standard in the Open Source community. Inkscape will gain a new file converter that will allow Inkscape users to more seamlessly convert to and from Xara. In addition, due to Uber-converter's "hub" architecture, this may enable support for several further file formats. For some background... this effort came about after Charles Moir of Xara and I had some discussions about how Xara could become more involved in the Open Source community and the Inkscape community in particular. Since Xara does not yet support SVG, a xar2svg/svg2xar effort was clearly a logical first step. With Xara providing this code under the GPL, it makes a valuable contribution to the community, too! Anyway, it's great to welcome Xara to the Inkscape community; I hope we'll be able to work together with them even more closely in the future. Bryce

We're now in feature freeze, and already past half-way towards achieving hard freeze. We've named our release wardens and I'm already hearing some discussions regarding sorting through packaging issues. We've got some work to do to get through the must-fix bugs, but given that we've had a short time since 0.42.2, I think even this will go smoothly. The number to check out this time is the number of feature requests. We dropped the total from 471 a couple months ago to under 450 now, or from a ratio of 62% to under 50%. Quite a jump! Where the project needs help right now is in closing bugs. We have our bug tracker quite well under control, but there are 258 open bugs, and it would be wonderful if we could cut that down significantly before the 0.43 release. win98 crash on startup with 2.8 libs

I spent half the night debugging this crash today - gdb no longer works, so I had to do this by scattering printfs in the code. I localized it to this: gtk_option_menu_set_menu(GTK_OPTION_MENU(us->menu), m); in spus_rebuild_menu() in unit-menu.cpp. It's called when the first units menu for the selector toolbar is created. Both pointers are valid. I know gtk_option_menu is deprecated, but it must not crash! We have lots of old code with gtk_option_menu and absolutely no resources to rewrite them all. If I comment that line out, it goes farther, but eventually still crashes somewhere. I have no energy left to figure out where. Now, there's also an error box with the same "pango error" as the one I fixed for 0.42.2. As I understand it, it's caused by the crash handler's attempt to write prefs on exit. The prefs file is read OK but writing it out is broken (again). However, this only happens after the gtk_option_menu crash. My conclusion: We have to roll back to 2.6. The gtk 2.8 seems to be really really broken on win98. I don't see how we can work around this. Opinions? -- bulia byak Inkscape. Draw Freely. http://www.inkscape.org

Hi, I think translating the Xlink attributes (shown in the link properties dialog of a linked object) is too specific. Anyone wanting to make sense of the attributes would have to know http://www.w3.org/TR/2000/CR-xlink-20000703/ and the link in the TRANSLATORS comment anyway. Don't you agree that these strings should show up in non-interpreted English? If so, these strings should not be marked as translatable. Here is an example: #. Hi all, When I have opportunities, I like to try out Inkscape for some of my freelance work and take notes. My freelance work is mostly doing artwork for those t-shirts you see in kiosks at the mall. Think "Coolest Grandpa in the World". A lot of tracing and finishing of scanned drawings. Anyway, I realized that I had a lot of notes from over several months and I thought I'd finally gather them together and send them to the list. I love the MMB panning and zooming, especially now that I can MMB pan even while I am in the middle of drawing a path with the pen tool. Is there any reason that Shift+MMB+drag couldn't serve the same function as LMB+drag with the zoom tool (zooming in on the area you've just dragged a box around)? I think it would really complete the middle mouse button as a document navigation tool. Shift+MMB+drag currently just pans the document, the same as regular MMB dragging. Dialogs pop-up to the front whenever I hover for more than a second over a toolbar button or menu. They appear to pop up simultaneously with the tooltips. This is under Win2k, It works correctly in Ubuntu. Is there any way that the HSL color picker could be fixed so that changing the value of one component would not affect the values of the other components? For instance, setting S to 0 often snaps H to 0 also. Other, less drastic value changes occasionally occur too. It is frustrating to pick out the exact hue I want, only to have it change when I start tinkering with the saturation or lightness. Align nodes is nice, but it would be more useful if there was an option to align to the center or average of the selected nodes. I love the node editing tool, especially now that i can drag curve segments and double click to add nodes! I use Illustrator at work and at home for freelance jobs and I must say that the path editing UI is one area where I find Inkscape to be head and shoulders above AI. The only problem is the speed. Forgive me for mentioning it (since I know everyone is aware of the slow rendering), but more than any other drawback this is the one that can turn using Inkscape from a pleasure into a headache. I've brought this up before, and people mentioned profiling, but it is a little bit over my head. Connector avoidance fix for ellipses and translated objects

Hello, I have posted a fix for the previously discussed problems with connector avoidance for circles, ellipses and arcs as well as translated objects. I am curently in the UK with a very bad internet connection and very limited computer access so I can't easily read mail or get on Jabber to tell where we are in the release. Also, please check it compiles fine because while I fixed the problem on my laptop, I had to copy the changes by hand to get them anywhwere near the internet, and coulndn't connect to any of the machines at Monash where I would actually have been able to compile the change. There was never much of a thaw after 0.42! Ideally, the tree should be open just after a release for new work including patches for minor bugs, also for developers' prized features, as there will be a period for stabilisation before the next release. Just before a release, the emphasis should be on testing, packaging and to a lesser extent on 'blocking bugs'. Cutting down the number of open bugs by commiting is highly likely to expose other bugs or problems with the code that require stabilisation and should be done (IMHO) early in the release cycle. Bounding Boxes

Hi, I believe there is a problem with the way bounding boxes are calculated. At the moment the calculation assumes that lines have a >Round< join and cap style if the stroke is visible. This means, for example, that the bounding box of a 30-60-90 degree triangle does not preserve the proportions of the triangle and that a triangle with a Miter join style extends past the bounding box. It also means that a non-horizontal or vertical line with a Square cap extends outside the bounding box and that a line with a Butt cap doesn't reach the bounding box. I can't see any advantage to this particular definition. A better choice for defining the bounding box would be to use the entire visible area covered by an object. Advantage: More intuitive and probably what most people would expect. Disadvantage: More CPU intensive? May not be what is wanted for lines with markers - could ignore. There may be occasions where a different definition could be advantageous such as defining a bounding box assuming a Miter join style or using only the nodes (both preserve the proportions of regular objects). Using Inkscape.

Hi, First let me thank the developers for the fantastic Inkscape. I have a couple of questions about its usage. (It's a wish-list, really. I am using Inkscape 0.42.2). First, when using Inkscape on a large file such as this one: http://www.liv.ac.uk/~gband/shift_class_classification.svg it's impossible to zoom out so one can see the whole picture at once. Secondly, it would seem to me that one should "export" to file types which are not rich enough to recover the whole file, and "save" to other file types. But in Inkscape one has to "save as" (for example) Postscript. Then, if you want to keep a master copy for later editing you has to save as .svg as well, forcing you to keep choosing between the two filenames. This also seems inconsistent with the command-line switches where there is a --export-ps switch. Can't "Export bitmap" be turned into "Export", offering a choice of bitmaps, and remembering the chosen filename? Thanks, gav.

I've got a few bugs open for Win32 issues, and a few ideas on how to address them. What I don't have is a good way to compile or run Win32 tests here on my Mac. :-) What would be helpful would be anyone who could either build win32 versions with some tweaks or anyone who could run quick tests with those builds. Especially given our freeze state, I don't want to check anything in to CVS that hasn't gone through actual build and user testing. So... If anyone could help with either of those aspects (I've had a few people mention this in chat), just drop me a quick email directly and say if you can compile, test, or both. (no need to clutter the mailing lists to responses to this) Thanks.

web-site translation / gettext

Hi, I didn't catch up when you were discussing details of i18n implementation for our beloved www.inkscape.org. All I want is to point out that web-sites can be translated via gettext just like applications. Example is http://audacity.sf.net, where you just download a .pot file (from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/community/translation), translate it in KBabel, poEdit, GTranslator or whatever else and commit it to CVS or send to one of developers. When anything at ("on" is the right preposition?) the site updates, .pot files updates as well (currently manually, but this could be done automatically, I think). Translators then only need to merge changes tro translations and send them back to developer or commit themselves. This is quite handy. Compiling problem on win32

This is too bizarre... with fresh CVS, the newest libs, and a new install of mingw that's all up to date (fresh install, not upgrade), I am unable compile. I have everything in default locations so I am sure that is not the issue. It appears that it might be translation related since it references i18n stuff, but I could be mistaken. Hi , in the current CVS version I miss the print-direct function, is it only a wrong default in meues.xml ? When I delete all my personal settings and restart Inkscape I miss this menue. I've just today discovered WinLibre, which does this: http://www.winlibre.com/en/index.php It comes in two variants: a 650kB version that allows you to select which components you want (like a net install of a gnu/linux distribution), or a 171MB version suitable for putting on a CD. However, I don't yet know to what extent WinLibre engages in packaging activities: i.e. do they just grab the Windows binary that we provide, or do they get the source so that they can share libraries between the programs ? (If it gives any clues, the News page mentions handling package dependencies, and that it uses InnoSetup 5.0.) Is there anything we can do to work more closely with WinLibre ? (Another compilation of Free Software for Windows is http://www.theopencd.org/. It has a good reputation, but it doesn't yet include Inkscape, and my impression from a couple of minutes at their web site is that they just use the binaries provided by individual projects rather than do much packaging/integration work themselves. multiple selection and transform

Hi list, I would like to gather opinions about a particular usability point of inkscape and maybe suggest a change in the way transformations are applied. When selecting multiple objects and applying any transformation, they are treated as a whole. For example a rotation would rotation all objects around the center of their combination. I think it might be better to apply the same transformation to each object (and rotate each one around it's own center). Indeed, if you want to treat these objects as a whole you already have the possibility of grouping them (which is only one click), applying the transformation and then, possibly, degroup them if you want to further edit each object. On the other hand, let say you want to rotate at 45° twenty horizontal text items around their centers you will have to apply 20 times the same transformation. In addition, consider you want to rotate multiple selected object of 90°, there is at present an "inconsistency" in the transformations: objects are treated as a whole when rotating them with the transform palette but each object is rotated individually when using the "rotate by 90°" buttons of the GUI. More bugs with stroke

Just a few more bugs to report with the stroke dialog: 1) on a circle, the stroke width value spin button only increases even when trying to spin down. 2) End Markers a) for a line pointing to 8:00, the start/end marker is reversed, and then won't change b) at times the end marker popup does not display all the choices, or when you select one, it jumps to another. I would rank these as medium level bugs.

Confirmation of dates for the Gimp? Conference

Hi all, So - we've decided on dates for the facilities for a GimpCon 2006 - March 17/18/19 in Lyon, France. The provisional plan is to have 2 days "open to the public" presentations of free software graphics software. The third day will continue to be open to the public, but there will be no talks planned. The day is available to developers to do a hackfest, or have meetings, or chat & drink beer. Perhaps all 3 :) I've confirmed talks from Oyvind Kolas on a general image processing talk, featuring his non-linear editor and the (future) new core of the GIMP, a talk from Sven Neumann on the GIMP, and a talk from MrB and mrdocs over at Scribus. I will also be contacting OpenICC, littlecms, GutenbergPrint (formerly GimpPrint), Krita and Xsane, to see if their developers can come, and if they're interested in giving presentations. This is going to be a cool weekend. It'd be great to have a presentation on vector graphics. Unfortunately, I don't know if there are any Inkscape developers in Europe, and if there are, whether ye're interested in getting together. Please drop me a line ASAP. David mentioned he wasn't going to get Inkboard ported to Bob's PedroXMMP library before the feature freeze kicked in. Do we consider this work an effort to add a feature or fix a bug? Website translation procedure

Hi all, pistoncito asked about how to do translations of the website currently. I figure this suggests we need some sort of documentation, so here's a start. It sounds like we will need to change this process once we figure out how to do the automatic web browser language detection, but until that gets sorted out, we should use this process. I'll also post this to Wiki so folks can update it as better approaches are worked out for it. http://wiki.inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?WebsiteEditing Translating the Inkscape Website ================================ 1. Do a CVS checkout of the website module. 2. Create a subdirectory at the top level with your language code. I.e.: inkscape_web/es/ 3. Copy pages from the main site into your subdir structure, and begin translating them. Look in the other translated areas for examples of what needs translated. Note: The tutorial translations in the doc/ directory are handled separately from the website translation. These are the files in inkscape_web/doc/*/ that have .XX.html extensions. You do not need to do anything about these pages. Note: The translation of doxygen, wiki, and the various SF pages are separate from the website translation. You do not need to do anything about these pages. 4. Add a flag for your language in the images directory. It should be named inkscape_web/images/flag-XX.png. (where XX is your language code). Next add an img for the flag to inkscape_web/includes/header.php See how the other flags are done in that file as an example. 5. Add a news item to the index page announcing your translation. You are encouraged to write it in both English and your native language. 6. If you have CVS access, then commit your changes to the site. See the Website Editing and Working With CVS documentation for directions. If you do not have CVS access, then show your translation to one of the Inkscape administrators for review. They will then give you access to CVS and the website, so you can deploy your changes. Bryce

Hello, a quick glance tells me there is no RFE I as beginner with the code could possibly implement in short time, so I want to offer my help in the host reorganisation away from SF. Maybe people can use this thread also to collect things that have to be done in this regard. My limitation is that I have no broadband internet, nor a 24h line at my hands, though. Heya, Greg and others... I finished the Makefile for packaging and installation for clipartbrowser (check out from cvs as module: clipartbrowser). Please check it out and test it out. Greg, I think clipartbrowser.py should be renamed clipartbrowser, and then it needs to be installed into /usr/bin Right now everything is by default getting installed into /usr/share/clipartbrowser I removed the installation into Inkscape's extensions directory and focused on just getting the Makefile to build zip, tar.gz, tar.bz2 and make install and uninstall working. Please check over so we can do the first release of clipartbrowser under the Inkscape project and add it to the main sf.net Inkscape page. There is still more to do, but these changes should move it closer to being a nice good linux citizen standalone from Inkscape. Hi Guys! :) I talked to bbyak and he told me, to ask here if it is possible to have a localized version of www.inkscape.org, like www.inkscape.org/de/ I guess, the the News are stored separatedly, so a translated page could use the original messages until they are translated, too. Maybe one of the spanish users (must be some of them :) ) is willing to translate the website, too, so it's worth the effort. :) I made a concept of how a the translated website could look like. Hello, I set my kde to theme all gtk2 apps with its own theme which is baghira. If I run inkscape under this setup and go to Object - Transform inkscape crashes with this QPixmap: Invalid pixmap parameters QPainter::begin: Cannot paint null pixmap QPainter::setPen: Will be reset by begin() QPainter::setBrush: Will be reset by begin() Emergency save activated! Emergency save completed. Inkscape will close now. If you can reproduce this crash, please file a bug at www.inkscape.org<http://www.inkscape.org> with a detailed description of the steps leading to the crash, so we can fix it. Segmentation fault So it is the fault of my themes and such and maybe being too cutting edge but I also figured out a fix for it I put this into ~/.inkscape.theme "include "/usr/share/themes/Mist/gtk-2.0/gtkrc" style "user-font" { font_name="Arial 12" } widget_class "*" style "user-font" gtk-theme-name="Mist" gtk-font-name="Arial 12" and then run inkscape like this GTK2_RC_FILES=~/.inkscape.theme /usr/bin/inkscape So inkscape uses the Mist theme and everything works fine!

Deleting a node with Ctrl+Alt+click

Hello, I've just noticed that one can delete a node from a path with the node tool by Ctrl+Alt+clicking it. This is so useful I'm surprised I don't see this mentioned in the Release Notes for 0.43. Was this already working before the /extremely useful/ recent additions to node editing? Also, I don't understand this, also in the Release Notes: "As in Selector, if you press Shift before starting to drag, you always get a node selection rubberband rectangle (even if you start on a path [but not a node!])." P.S. If double-click creates a new node, shouldn't double-clicking a node delete it? -- Jean-François Lemaire

There's been a proposal to create a new list for Spanish speakers. Does anyone have any comment on this before I set it up? Also, I'm thinking that for language-specific user lists we should require at least 3 people pledged to using the list before we set it up. Does that sound okay? Gtkmm.org announced their 2.8 release today. Since this one includes a bugfix for exporting Gtk::TreeViewColumn that we need, I built Glibmm and Gtkmm for our win32 bundle. It also includes the recent updates to Cairo 1.0 and Gtk2.8.3. I've implemented a gtkmm'd replacement for the About dialog, which includes the now-standard "License" and "Credits" dialogs, a-la Gnome. The "Credits" dialog includes all the authors and translators (it's easy to add a "documenters" tab too). Right now, the license and people lists are hard-coded in src/ui/dialog/aboutbox.cpp, but I'd like it to load from "COPYING", "AUTHORS", and (the new) "TRANSLATORS" files instead. That'll come next. :) To make the TRANSLATORS file, I made a quick dump of all the translators I could find in the po/*.po files. Arpad, is this a "correct" list? I did a quick sort on it by first name, since I just wanted to get something in there. There are strange width issues with the gtkmm'ified canvas view. I'm sort of just working around it at the moment. Hopefully this can get straightened out as we move more stuff to gtkmm. Also, can someone more familiar with memory allocation in gtkmm look over my code and let me know if I did anything silly with pointers/allocation? (Oh, and I disabled the "show license" verb since that's now part of the new about dialog.) -- Kees Cook @outflux.net

This morning I committed most of the DOM source to src/dom. I spent the rest of the morning removing warnings, and getting the compile to work nicely on win32. I will add the Makefile_insert when I get a chance. Until it is hooked up to the autotool tree, it should not hurt anyone's build. I included the .idl's, so that people can see how the main .h's try to follow the w3c specs. Now that it is committed, its glaring unfinished-ness will coerce me to work on it until it is done. :-) Bob

But I also need the freehand drawing (F6) very often and don't want to demote it. Next move the file(s) to their proper final location. Finally rename SPDesktop to Inkscape::UI::View::Edit. I found for the renaming, that it helped to create a typedef. Note that there are some forward definitions of the class that get in the way; I wasn't sure if it was better to remove them or to try to refactor them. Ultimately, though, at some point you have to just start going through the whole codebase and rename stuff. I've just realized a rather big problem with menus.xml: it tends to freeze the menus in the state they were in at the time menus.xml was created. If we release with it in its present form, it means that users may not see the benefits of future menu reorganizations. -mental

Hi, Is there a way to publish a document as package including the images that are linked to the document. It would make it far more easy to send inkscape work to someone per email and also to move documents to other file structures. I know inkscape is able to show a base encoded image but this makes inkscape very slow, so this is probably not the right method. If not would it be possible to create a extention which could save a file as tarball or zip with the images in it? If so I will try to create it? Hey guys! I don't quite get it. I kinda assume that I'm just not understanding how I can add colours to a custom swatches palette. I mean swatches have been around for quite a while now, but so far I don't see the point in it, if I can't create my own palette with custom colours. Please help me with this. Xar file format (aka Flare) and Xarlib

Before I forget.... It seems Xara was at one point trying to compete with Flash and released their Flare file format which later came to be known as Xar. The anti SVG and SWF proganda is almost funny and it is about as interesting as reading a file format specification can be. The Xar specifications are available on the Xara website http://www.xara.com/support/docs/webformat/spec/ There code seems to be available for processing the file format and the terms of use do not seem draconian so it might be possible to make use of it and maybe allow Inkscape to import Xara files. Given how interested bulia is in Xara perhaps he is already aware of this but I hadn't heard any mention of it before (on the list/wiki/bugtracker) and thought it might be of interest. Hi, inkview compiles fine under Win32. At least it was not part of the distributions. As is has been ask already do want to ship inkview in the next release ? The changes in the makefile are minimal. Adib.

gtkmm .exe and Windows

Hi there, While not a strictly Inkscape-related question, Inkscape is one of the best gtkmm/c++ apps around (or at least I hope, as I noticed you started with gtk/c), so I thought you might be able to help. I'm experimenting with gtkmm and have the simplest program as outlined in the docs compiled as a Windows .exe, here's the code: #include <gtkmm.h> int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { Gtk::Main kit(argc, argv); Gtk::Window window; Gtk::Main::run(window); return 0; } My problem is that the resulting .exe opens the console Window along with the GUI, Inkscape doesn't do this, and I wondered how you achieved that. Maybe i found a bug? Here is my SVG-File http://mindb.de/t/schatten-r.svg But if i render it as png i get this result: http://mindb.de/t/schatten.png As you can see (http://mindb.de/t/zoom.png) the bottom-shadow is darker thant the upper-shadow (and the right one darker than the left. Is this a bug?

gtkmm .exe and Windows solved

Well it does seem I have a knack for asking obsolete questions, although I really was stuck with this problem and Google wasn't helping, it seems a fresh pair of eyes did the trick. The problem was that it was running in the console subsystem, as opposed to the GUI windows subsystem. Solved simply by adding the flag -mwindows to g++. Autorouting Connectors

Hello all, The Summer of Code has offically finished up. I've since caught up on some sleep and a few non-SoC things. I've also fixed up the obvious bugs, so this seems like a good time to announce what I actually achieved with the connector tool. Autorouting polyline connectors are in CVS and work well. However you manipulate them, they will avoid objects marked as 'avoided'. Objects can be marked as 'avoided' or 'ignored' via the connector context toolbar buttons. Tricky to explain, but easy to see and understand... just have to play with it. The following wiki page has instructions and further discussion: http://wiki.inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?UsingTheConnectorTool There are a couple of obvious problems: * Connectors are drawn to object's bounding boxes, rather than edges. I have a couple of ideas and some code to address this, so it shouldn't be too long till this is in the codebase. * Bounding boxes are used for the avoidance code, i.e., lines will route around a diamond as if it was a rectagle. The routing code deals with polygons so it's just a matter of me or someone else properly implementing the NR::ConvexHull class. There are plenty of other features I plan to add, some that have been requested by people already. Toolbar marker (arrow head) controls being one of these. See my TODO list on the wiki or in connector-context.cpp. Please have a look at the wiki page, and try out the connectors. Then add to the wiki page with ideas/problems or open bugs/RFEs. I've really enjoyed working on Inkscape the past two months, and as I said in an earlier mail, I feel like this time has got me over the initial hurdle of learning the codebase. I feel much better placed to comfortably contribute in the future. Basically, expect me to become a regular on the mailing list and Jabber. :-) Also, one of the things I've noticed as a result of the Summer of Code time is the real community aspect of the Inkscape project. It's a really open, welcoming community. I'd heard of students working for other projects who really didn't have much contact with their mentoring organisation, and were still waiting for accounts for CVS etc at the end of August. Tree changes for DOM stuff

With the help of Bryce, I am planning on (finally) adding the DOM code to the tree, even though it's not done. This will give people a chance to look at it while it is in progress. Some changes to the tree were necessary: /src/ecma and /src/xpath are gone /src/dom is created /src/extension/script/js is moved to /src/dom I updated the win32 Makedep files, and the win32 build works nicely. It looks like configure.ac has no missing dependencies, so hopefully the unix build won't be broken. If anyone has any problems like this, check out the makefiles listed at the bottom of configure.ac. No, xpath and ecma are not gone. xpath is now part of DOM. Since Swig no longer supports JS, is behooves us to bind JS directly to DOM, hence the move there. Hopefully as we begin hooking things up, we can have some fun with this. Bob

We're in the early stages of the planning - and now's the time to stand up & be counted. The GIMP conference, which may become a more general Free Graphics conference, if other people like the idea, will be held in CPE, Lyon, in March or April 2006. We have 4 possible weekends (Friday/Saturday/Sunday) available. The first is the weekend of St. Paddy's Day (the patron saint of Guinness), and David Odin's birthday - 17/18/19 March. The second is the weekend afterwards, when there's not much on - 24/25/26 March The third is the birthday of Dave Neary (me!), and April Fool's Day (think of the press release possibilities!) - 31 march/1/2 April. The last one - 7/8/9 April. We need to decide when the conference will be on soon, to reserve space in the university, get in contact with youth hostels, figure out what's going to happen, and work up some sponsorship. hello, in case you're wondering, my recent commit moved SPDesktop from GObject to C++/sigc++. Fortunately, it was only necessary to touch about 80 files for this reorganization. However, some issues are unresolved at the moment, and I'll pursue them ASAP: - slideshow is probably broken - compiling inkboard was not tested, probably broken A crash on shutdown was removed in the last minute. There might be more, in spite of five days of testing, so don't hesitate to report. Regards, ralf

It's some un-upgradeable FC3 -- yum upgrade shows some missing openssh deps or something -- with glib updated manually to 2.0. With the previous glib, Inkscape would not compile. I'll try to recompile Inkscape on FC4, or replace that distro with another one. Project Status September 1, 2005 Lots has happened over the past month, including a new 0.42 release, completion of the four Google Summer of Code projects, several really useful features including pressure sensitivity, enhanced node editing, and extensions, and some project infrastructure work, such as a new RSS feed at http://inkscape.org/inkscape.rss. We've seen a number of articles and mentions of Inkscape in various magazines and online news sites. We've just initiated a new Inkscape Tester community. This group is being organized to focus on testing of robustness, usability, performance, etc. This is just getting started, so if this sounds interesting its a great time to get involved. I'd like to revisit the issue of shipping Windows package with their own Python/PyXML. By now I use Aaron's python extensions all the time, they are immensely useful. Not as convenient as native solutions would be, but still a lot of fun and an important part of my design work. The current instructions page for Windows: http://wiki.inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?GettingEffectsWorking/Windows is way too scary for an average user. Python alone might be OK, but PyXML on top of that is certainly too much. I think very few dedicated users would venture into this. So, what do you think about including a minimum Python/PyXML into the Windows installer and enabling extensions by default? Locale settings on windows

There have been a few issues now and then with gettext and friends on Win32. A few related tracker items are [ 1250581 ] WIN32: Inkscape uses locale settings for determining UI lang [ 1246076 ] Mixed languages in UI [ 1246463 ] Language Selection Option / Menu Entry After talking with Peter some last night, it was bubbling around in my brain, and kicked out a work-around. This will need to be tested/refined, but the basic approach could be to hook into things right at program startup (over in the Win32 bits). At that point we could check if LANG and/or the other POSIX environment variables were set. If not, we could then just query the Win32 NLS calls and then build up and set LANG and LC_* properly. Some preferences could be set to affect this, and perhaps override it with explicit user values/choices. The details need to be hammered out, but I think this is a good work- around to allow us to get a better user experience on Win32 without having to get libc changed, etc. I wanted to toss this out in case others were still pondering things today.

Google Summer of Code projects

Hi all, The Google Summer of Code projects are due to wrap up by September 1st. We've been quite thrilled at the progress made from the SOC students, but as they say, all things must come to an end. We've not received direction from Google about the next steps, which is kind of weird... I have expected we'd see some directions by now. Possibly we'll hear something tomorrow? In any case, based on what we've been told in the past, we expect that we're going to need to go through a review phase where the mentors check the student's work and decide whether it is acceptable. I think each mentor will have his own set of criteria to judge from, but there are some expectations that I suspect will be weighed heavily on: * Has the code been checked into Inkscape CVS? * Does the code function well enough that people can at least test it out? * Has the developer participated with other inkscape developers to ensure that bugs are fixed, requested changes made, etc.? * If the developer has "bitten off too much to chew", have they triaged the requirements and implemented an adequate subset? Of course, if the code implements 100% of what was mentioned in the original proposal, that's even better. ;-) But as long as it meets most of the requirements and shows that the participant has been successful at learning Open Source, I would think it would be acceptable. DXF export is now possible... At my website (http://ucsu.colorado.edu/~squiresm/), that hopefully will not be needed much more, I have posted .inx and .sh files that will export to dxf using pstoedit. I found that dxf is already supported, there are a fair number of features that I haven't explored. The conversion seems to be ok. I also have more functionality in the dxf import. Layers are supported and I have turned linetypes back on. The linetype is a little buggy because it is defined in two places and I have tried to make a good decision about which definition takes precedence. I also fixed problems with bulges in plines and lwplines. The files are there for color conversion, but I haven't included the color yet in the SVG. I am open to people sending me their favorite dxf and then I test it against AutoCAD (there is a license at school) or if you test a file and you don't see what you want then let me know. Eric: Along those lines... you are right the projection of a tilted circle on a plane below should look elliptical. I will fix that sometime later. Hi all, Now that 0.42 is done, I thought I'd send the extension version of svgslice for others to test and consider for inclusion. It's pretty basic: just saves marked sections of the image into separate PNG "slices", and generates a basic XHTML file that lists the slices. Most notably, no equivalent layout is done in the XHTML file, so that it looks like the original SVG drawing. Problem is, there are many ways to do that in CSS, and the most obvious way (absolute positioning) is probably not much use to people. I suspect it would lead to bad web pages, or just get in the way of proper hand-crafted layout, and people who want to use a WYSIWYG CSS editor to move them around easily can still do so. Note also, that the slices will be saved in Inkscape's current directory. If you load inkscape by double-clicking on an image in a project folder, and save the XHTML file in the same folder, then this is fine -- your startup directory will be that folder, and images will be right alongside the XHTML file. But if you start inkscape from your home directory on the command line, or from just running it via a menu entry, and then load and save a file in another location, the PNG slices will end up in your home directory (at least on unix; windows might save then in C: or "C:\Program Files\Inkscape", or something like that. At the moment, there's nothing I can do about that, since inkscape doesn't CD to the output directory before calling the extension, and doesn't seem to provide the extension with any idea of where it is actually saving stuff. Personally, I'd like to see that issue fixed for 0.43. But either way, it'll be good to hear if this works for others, if there are any bugs, etc. So please give it a test, and let me know :) Installation ============ Save both attached files in your inkscape extensions directory. If that directory is somewhere other than /usr/share/inkscape/extensions, then you'll need to edit the paths in svgslice.inx to reflect that. Obviously, this will have a different path on Windows. Maybe someone could edit the svgslice.inx file, and post it here for other windows users? Usage ===== * Draw something. * Create a layer called "slices". * Draw rectangles in this layer representing the areas you want to slice (note: it helps if you make the rectangles semi-transparent) * Optionally, name any/all slices by using the built-in XML editor to edit the "id" attributes of the rectangles. * Hide the slices layer. * Choose "Save as..." from the File menu. * Select "XHTML file with PNG slices" as the file type to use. * Enter a filename (e.g., "test.xhtml"), and save. Hey all, I'm releasing version 0.4 of the Clip Art Browser. This, of course, is the release of the browser thats meant to be the final product for the purposes of Google's Summer of Code. Grab it from http://download.berlios.de/ocalhelper/clipartbrowser-0.4.tar.gz Hopefully, installation is even simpler now. The indexing process for local clip art, which could be a bit confusing, has been integrated into the GUI, so that now, you really only have to extract and run. The README has been updated, but if you have trouble getting it to work, let me know. Ironically, the one feature that no longer works is, uh, working as an Inkscape extension. That should be very simple to do... it just need to figure out how to have the executable that Inkscape calls launch the browser as a separate process, but this has been surprisingly tricky in python. If people would like to put this in 0.43, I can get this fixed tonight if needed, but I assumed that it probbaly wouldn't be. I also figured that the effects menu isn't really the appropriate place for something like this, and we'd have to semi-hardcode it into some other menu later anyway (I think Jon mentioned something about this earlier). This isn't a final product, of course. I look forward to continuing to improve it, and hopefully getting more into the code of Inkscape proper over the coming months. Some places in inkscape use inkscape:connector-avoid (attributes-test.cpp, and the spelling of SP_ATTR_CONNECTOR_AVOID), and some places use inkscape:avoid (sp_object_read_attr and sp_object_setAttribute). I think I prefer inkscape:connector-avoid. Or is it intended for the same attribute to be used for removing node-node overlaps? (Whether as a once-off operation, e.g. using Tim Dwyer's implementation, or the dynamic linear approximation stuff that njh & I did for UIST last year.) If so, then I'd go for inkscape:avoid, and change the enum to SP_ATTR_INKSCAPE_AVOID. pjrm.

Hi mjwybrow, A small bug exists in the code of the file: libavoid/timer.cpp After running the code on an AMD64 system: Error: clock_t is not 4 bytes Aborted This snippet has a bug: if (sizeof(clock_t) != 4) { fprintf(stderr, "Error: clock_t is not 4 bytes\n"); abort(); } Its always a good idea to never compare a size_of with a constant (unless in things like configure scripts or with very lowlevel program code). I havnt read the rest of the file yet (so I dont know why you insist on having it 4 bytes), but it is obvious that such structures have different sizes on different architectures. Based on prior releases I expect it may take several weeks to a month to go through this release process. I'd like to propose that we target Sept 1st as our feature freeze point. This release of librsvg contains a few critical fixes. It fixes the dpi API which mistakenly got broken in the 2.11.0 release. It also improves the pattern used to recognize svg files in the gdkpixbuf loader so that your desktop SVG files will once again work. Clip Art Browser 0.39

I'm releasing version 0.39 of the clip art browser. Naturally, this is an almost-ready snapshot of the next major release, 0.4. Installation works the same as with past releases, although I don't think Jon's very cool Makefile will work. The two big missing features that will be added for 0.4 are making the "Import Clip Art" gui (it requires threading, and pygtk threading always drives me nuts), and some kind of progress bar during the retrieval of large result sets. For this version, a ton of code was revamped, and the result is a significantly more usable and more extensible product (I think). The interface, in particular, was violently redone. http://sharelinux.org/?q=node/1 You'll have to index your clip art using the indexClipart.py script before using it. Also, for now, I wouldn't reccomend using the ocal_net module with it, simply for performance... once I have a progress dialog, that will be more doable. There's a ton of changes in here, most of which were inspired by the recent thread about the project on this mailing list (in particular, Nathan's xml category-hierarchy idea proved useful). Also, this version is significantly more independent of Inkscape. I'll provide more documentation soon, but check out the config file; you can now have it open up images in arbitrary programs that you specify, all cleanly integrated into the UI. Feedback, as always, is very welcome. I'll try to have 0.4 out by, oh say... Wednesday :). Greg

You can't use virtual functions in GObjects. At all. Introducing a virtual function to a class changes the resulting object layout in a way that is wholly incompatible with GObject. If you need something virtual-like before a class hierarchy has been transitioned away from GObject, you _must_ use the normal GObject mechanisms for that (i.e. adding an entry to the GObjectClass-ish vtable and then writing a (non-virtual) wrapper method that calls explicitly through that function pointer). -mental

Bugs in Stroke Dialog

On Inkscape 0.4.2.0, I've run across a few bugs with strokes: 1) With end markers, Left arrow is bigger than right arrow (assuming something like Arrow1Sstart, Arrow1Send) - seems to do this for large,medium,small arrows 2) The entry box for dash spacing will not accept any values 3) The combo popup for line end types gives different choices - sometimes large arrow is available, pick another marker, then large becomes available again. Plus there is often a large blank portion of the combo list.

UPDATE! So, sf.net is completely unsecure now for the web server to write data. So, I have a solution to move the wiki to fd.o and make it work there temporarily. Unfortunately, we are coming to the limits of using sf.net. The librsvg team is happy to announce librsvg 2.11 librsvg is a SVG rendering library maintained by Dom Lachowicz and Caleb Moore and used among other places in the GNOME desktop. This release of librsvg is the result of 6 months of development. Caleb Moore spent a lot of time reorganizing the code to enable adding DOM support to librsvg. This code reorganisation had a lot of other positive side effects too, like improved stability and consistency, and last but not least improved rendering speed. There is also a great host of rendering fixes by Caleb to things like gradient positioning, patterns, namespaces, inheritance, marker rendering and text rendering. Also in this release is better clip paths handling and handling of out of order references and other file references. Dom Lachowicz have worked on full support for conditionals and made vfs support work better in addition to merging patches and bugfixing. In addition to this we have a host of smaller changes including: 1. rsvg cannot handle a relative path (309234) - Josselin Mouette 2. librsvg tries to open files twice (309220) - Josselin Mouette 3. rsvg behavior keeps aspec ratio when only width or height (309233) Josselin Mouette 4. Clip Art Browser

Hello Greg, I have tested your browser outside of inkscape. 1.) The first time the app loads, there should be all image loaded, or some kind of random image, or some kind of text that says search for what you need...basically, users need help. 2.) When dragging in clip art, could it land in Inkscape where it is dropped? Is this an Inkscape or a Clip Art Browser issue? 3.) Where are the titles for all the clip art? 4.) Could the right pane collapse, or be collapsed at the beginning? 5.) Is there a way to add a light preferences menu, or a button to this. I wonder if it is wise to put a menu or some kind of icon bar in this app. I'm leaning towards icon menu rather than a menu because it will be used inside apps for the most part. 6.) When doing a search, the app goes non-responsive for long periods of time which is bad IMO. 7.) Could you add some kind of link to the image or to the open clip art library that says "get more clip art" 8.) When running the Clip Art Browser, Inkscape is blocked and appears frozen so then it is not possible to do drag and drop...not good! This should be fixed. The Clip Art Browser should be spawned, the pid recorded, etc, so that Inkscape controls that process, but so that Inkscape can continue... 9.) The name of the program, Clip Art Browser needs to be made consistent throughout the code 10.) You need to make the clip art indexer take an argument as to where the clipart folder is, and then it needs to also take an argument for where to install the index.dat it generates...if this arg. is not passed in, then generate that file in the same dir. as where the script is run. 11.) There should be some kind of information in the GUI as to how many images are at the apps disposal. 12.) Some kind of browse by category would be nice. 13.) Some kind of browse alphabetically would be nice too... :) I've attached a Makefile which should go into the main directory for your app. Now ppl. can do make install and uninstall. Also, now it will be quite easy to do more testing, as users have a way to get this in and out of their extensions dir easily. Should Greg's program be a new project on the main Inkscape page, or should it be moved into the extensions directory? Now that I have made a makefile I'm in favor of making it its own project. Also, it is usable by other apps, so it can be standalone. vacuum defs not working properly

Hey guys, there still are problems sometimes with vacuum defs and I finally managed to reproduce it! I've two files, gnome-fs-network.svg and and gnome-fs-client.svg attached. When you import the gnome-fs-client.svg into the gnome-fs-network.svg (I use drag and drop for this) delete it again and vacuum defs, no defs will be deleted. Save the file and close it. When you open it again and do "vacuum defs" it'll clean up quite a few definitions definitions. I thought there was a bug filed about this already, but can't find it right now. Does anybody have any clue, or should I go ahead filing a new one? David

Ah very nice. I shall try this tonight. I am looking forward to not using the windows version, which is still great but I would rather use my linux box. Many thanks for the quick reply. The solution there ultimately is to do export CPATH=/usr/local/include in your build environment. You will probably need to add /usr/local/lib to your LD_LIBRARY_PATH as well. That should get you through configure.
