GSoC Mentor Summit/Reunion
by Josh Andler
Hello Board,
TL;DR first: Does the board want to fund any additional delegates travel &
room expenses for the reunion if we have anyone chosen by the lottery?
This year for the 10th anniversary of Summer of Code, Google is holding a
special Mentor's Summit (Reunion) which is a little different than in the
past. In addition to the normal 2 delegates we get to send where Google
funds up to $2200 (up to $1100 per person) in travel expenses plus covering
the room, they will hold a lottery for others to be able to attend as well
(however, it is at their own expense as well as the room cost). The people
eligible to attend the Reunion and enter the lottery are any of our
previous GSoC participants (admins, mentors, as well as students).
I wanted to find out if the board would be in favor of funding the travel
and room for anyone from our organization should we have anyone enter the
lottery and be chosen. I have not brought this up to any of our previous
participants yet for obvious reasons, but need to do so soon. One of the
other things that is different this year is that we need to decide far in
advance who will be attending. We need to have everything finalized by
6/20, so people responding to this soon would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Josh

[tony@...41...: affidavits to maintain & strengthen registration of the Inkscape trademarks]

Subject: affidavits to maintain & strengthen registration of the Inkscape trademarks
Hi, all: FYI, I will be filing affidavits required to maintain the
registration of the Inkscape trademarks[1] with the USPTO. The affidavit
filing fees amount to $100/registered mark, or $300, and are required to
maintain the registrations.
I would also strongly recommend filing affidavits of incontestability
for each of the marks as well. Basically, we'd be asserting that:
- the marks have been in continuous use for 5 years
- there are no pending legal challenges to the marks
- there have been no final decisions adverse to our claim of ownership
of the marks.
The incontestability affidavits would strengthen the presumption of
validity of the marks, and render them immune to certain challenges. The
USPTO charges an additional $200 per affidavit, so the total cost would
now be (3*200) + (3*100) = $900. If that seems pricey, we could
consider only filing the incontestability affidavits for only a subset
of the marks (e.g., just the "Inkscape" literal mark).
I will plan to file the maintenance affidavits either way. How would
you like me to proceed re: the incontestability affidavits? Please
advise/confirm.
Best, -Tony
[1] as a reminder, the three registered marks are: the "Inkscape"
literal mark (i.e., the word itself); the "ink mountain" logo; and the
"Draw Freely" slogan.

SWAMP
by Johan Engelen
Hi all,
Is this something we want to sign up to?
https://continuousassurance.org/
After a quick browse around their website, they seem to offer a platform
that runs static analysis tools. We can run them ourselves (and have
done so not so long ago), but it is nice to have a website do it for all
of us. (unfortunately, not many of us compile with clang; I gave up the
fight on Windows a while back, and will have to try again later)
cheers,

[REFERENDUM] Tav attendance at London The Graphical Web and another SVG Working Group
by Bryce Harrington
Board members, your vote is also needed on this additional matter:
Proposal:
[ ] a. Approve funding Tav to attend the London SVG WG meeting and
The Graphical Web conference as outlined below, for a total
of up to $1550.
[ ] b. Do not approve funding Tav.
Background:
I (Tav) would like funding to attend the London SVG working group
meeting, held August 22-26 just before The Graphical Web (TGW,
formerly SVG Open) conference. I would also like back-up funding to
attend TGW conference in Winchester, England should the event
organizers not be able to fully fund my attendance (they have fully
funded me the past few years and have committed to partially funding
this year but cannot make a full commitment yet).
This is a critical time for SVG 2. The new features I am responsible
for include mesh gradients, hatched fills, and auto-flowed text. The
move to "CSS based" text layout which brings in auto-flowed text (with
a natural SVG 1.1 fallback) requires a lot of work which is easiest to
do face-to-face. Critical decisions are made at these meetings
(i.e. dropping SVG fonts). It is important to have Inkscape interests
represented. Progress on SVG 2 can be followed at:
https://svgwg.org/svg2-draft/
The London meeting is being held in conjunction with TGW. I will be
giving an SVG talk at TGW, high lighting Inkscape's support for new
SVG 2 features.
Approximate cost for London
5 nights lodging/meals $600 (in University dorm room)
Approximate costs for TGW (if organizers can't fund),
Transportation $200 (via train)
4 nights lodging/meals $400 (in University dorm room)
Conference fee $350 (should be waved)

[REFERENDUM] Tav attendance at Santa Clara SVG Working Group Meeting
by Bryce Harrington
Board members, your vote is needed on this matter:
Proposal:
[ ] a. Approve funding of up to $900 for Tav to attend the Santa Clara
SVG WG meeting as outlined below.
[ ] b. Do not approve funding Tav.
Background:
I (Tav) would like funding to attend the Santa Clara SVG working group
meeting, held as part of the annual W3C "TPAC" meeting October 27-31
just after the GSoC mentor's meeting. I am already schedule to attend
the GSoC mentor's meeting with Inkscape funding (see GSoC
resolution). This request is for the additional cost of staying for
the SVG WG meeting. (Santa Clara is next to San Jose, where the GSoC
meeting is taking place.
This is a critical time for SVG 2. The new features I am responsible
for include mesh gradients, hatched fills, and auto-flowed text. The
move to "CSS based" text layout which brings in auto-flowed text (with
a natural SVG 1.1 fallback) requires a lot of work which is easiest to
do face-to-face. Critical decisions are made at these meetings
(i.e. dropping SVG fonts). It is important to have Inkscape interests
represented. Progress on SVG 2 can be followed at:
https://svgwg.org/svg2-draft/
Approximate cost for Santa Clara
6 nights lodging/meals $900
The W3C organizers have waived the conference fee for me.
Note: The SVG WG is meeting the last two days of TPAC. I will either
attend the CSS WG meeting the first two day or I will visit a friend
during that time. In the latter case, I will use only half the
requested amount.

LGM Reimbursements and the SFC travel policy
by Tavmjong Bah
Hi,
We received some flack over the reimbursement requests I submitted for
LGM. We violated the travel policy several places. Here are some points
to keep in mind for future travel:
1. Airplane tickets must be purchased 14 days in advance unless
permission is obtained in advance from SFC.
2. A screen capture showing the airplane ticket search must be
submitted. This is to document that the ticket purchased is within $100
of the lowest available fare.
3. Do not submit food receipts, currency exchange fees, etc. Instead
request a per-diem.
4. Currency exchange rates are determined by the Bank of Canada
website.[1] SFC will do the conversions.
5. You must state what currency you want to be reimbursed in, even for a
PayPal account. (That was not clear in the policy.)
I've attached a copy of the travel policy for future reference (it
doesn't seem to be on the SFC website). Anyone traveling at Inkscape's
expense should read the policy carefully!

Hi all,
I thought you guys might find this data informative. I recently got
access to our CLI Ledger data, and sorted out how to generate reports to
get a sense of our project's funding and expenses.

This first table provides a high level view of our total money received
and paid since we joined the conservancy. We've spent a little over a
third of the money we've collected.

if you have any other questions let me know and I'll pass them along.

SVG WG meeting and GSoC Mentor's conference
by Tavmjong Bah
Hi,
I would like to ask for additional funding to cover attending the SVG
working group meeting in Santa Clara just after the GSoC mentor's
meeting (travel to/from the GSoC meeting is covered by the previous
referendum on the GSoC reunion). The SVG working group will meet two
days during the annual "TPAC" meeting (the joint meeting of all W3C
groups). I may also attend part of the CSS working group meeting which
is on two different days. I am asking for a maximum of $900 to cover
hotel and misc. other expenses. The W3C has waved the meeting fees for
me. Depending on the exact meeting schedule, I may only need to stay in
a hotel for two or three nights but am asking for support for the full
six to allow some flexibility.

SVG WG meeting and The Graphical Web conference
by Tavmjong Bah
Hi,
I would like to ask for funding to attend the SVG working group meeting
in London (August 22-26) just prior to The Graphical Web (TGW)
conference, formerly SVG Open, in Winchester, England (August 27-30). I
would also like to ask for back-up funding to attend TGW (where I will
be giving a talk) if the organizers are unable to completely fund my
attendance (the have the past few years).
The estimated cost for attending just the SVG WG meeting is 600 dollars,
this about 500 dollars for five nights in a university dorm room (London
hotels are very expensive) plus 100 dollars for misc. expenses.
If the TGW organizer's are unable to completely cover my expenses (train
to London/Winchester) there might also be travel expenses ($200),
conference fees ($350), room charges ($300 for a dorm room) and $100 for
misc. expenses. I expect that at least the conference fees will be
waved.
