Dear PLC, ===== Background ===== following approval of the Hardware policy, we have received the first three hardware requests. According to section 3b ibid, I'm creating these votes. Vote 1: Adam Belis is requesting a Microsoft Surface Pro 9 for testing purposes, a laptop / tablet with stylus. Estimated cost: 1900 USD (https://lists.inkscape.org/hyperkitty/list/inkscape-board@lists.inkscape.or…) Vote 2: Vaibhav Malik is requesting a Macbook Air for working on cross-platform issues in Inkscape, such as those that came up during the GTK4 migration. We've received some excellent entries for the About Screen Contest! Community Voting is open now through April 21 (ends 23:59 UTC)! The topic for this years' contest was "Growth". This first round of voting is the Community Round. Voting will be ranked choice voting, so click the checkbox next to each artwork to vote for as many ― or as few ―artworks as you'd like. Requesting Hardware - Surface Tablet

I would like to request Hardware from the project. Specifically Microsoft Surface Pro 9 i5 16 GB RAM + keyboard + drawing pen. My current Laptop is old and the battery is almost dead. It would be useful for me to have this device for working on Inkscape UI designs but also for testing Windows builds of Inkscape and pen support. Dear PLC, I'm requesting a Macbook Air under the "Contributor Hardware Policy" for working on cross-platform issues in Inkscape. The technical specifications of the requested Macbook are as follows: MacBook Air M3 13 Inch Model 16 GB RAM 8 Core CPU 512 GB SSD Price: INR 154900 or $1860 The product is listed at: https://www.apple.com/in/shop/buy-mac/macbook-air/13-inch-m3 René suggests going for the 15-inch model but I don't think that screen size would be a problem. Also, I have a 24-inch monitor that can be paired with the MacBook if the need arises. Device policy is submitted and vote has been successful. https://inkscape.org/*leadership-committee/ Martin: Fixed some issues on the bugfix accelerator program (about 9h this week). Tried to work around an issue where in one distribution ImageMagick doesn't have JPG support by adding a test for it, and also adding tool-specific shortcuts to the preferences interface. Mike: Tried to adapt Look & Feel of master to GTK3, adjusting differences PBS: Brought Spellcheck back. Is looking into GTK4 regressions, and working on speeding up the Font dropdown. Some discussion about how to implement this best in GTK4. For rendering, waiting on feedback on cross-platform support for OpenGL. René: Tries to fix master CI for Windows. Helpful contributions by Max Gaukler. Next version for MacOS is in the works as well, xz fallout. Is checking the GSoC 2 patches for formal criteria. Marc suggested that the cutoff for the 2 patches is close to the decision date. Tav: tries to come up with a solution for editing text in imported PDFs, as there are currently only manual kerns, no spaces. Vaibhav: This week, I worked on fixing some regressions in the text and font dialog on master. Most of the regressions in the font tab are fixed, but I'm confused about the placement of the font size selector without breaking the symmetry of the dialog. Any inputs are appreciated. Requested machine: Mac mini: Apple M2 with 8 core CPU, 16 GB memory, and 512 GB SSD. 1268 € Magic Keyboard English/US. 109 € See https://www.apple.com/fr/shop/buy-mac/mac-mini René suggests that 16 GB of memory is the mininum for compiling Inkscape quickly. Contributor Hardware Policy

==== Background ==== The developer team would like to improve cross platform support, and one measure towards that goal is to improve the access to Windows and macOS machines for core contributors. With merging the GTK4 branch, there is new interest in such a program. Martin and I have drawn up a policy for this program, which is attached. It mostly combines my previous email with your comments, plus some context around it. We've decided against excluding mice and keyboards, although I understand where the objection comes from. As other peripherals, such as color-correcting screens, stylus-like devices, etc. they may be relevant for improved hardware support (e.g.macOS specific keyboards, the touchpad and stylus included with Microsoft Surface keyboard covers etc.). I would, however, expect that a developer who returns a keyboard would at least wipe it a little bit! Again, the policy is directed at proven and trusted contributors. We'd like to test out the procedure of the policy, so if it passes, I'd ask the four people listed in the last email to request the hardware as per section 3. ==== Vote ==== a) Approve the attached hardware policy. b) Don't approve the attached hardware policy. c) Other: .... Dear PLC, The current iteration of Google Season of Docs, a program which connects FOSS projects with professional technical writers, is accepting applications by organisations until Monday. * We have come up with 2 project ideas. * Every organisation can submit at most one proposal. The guidelines for a proposal are given here: https://developers.google.com/season-of-docs/docs/org-proposal-template?hl=… * If the proposal is accepted, the organisation must hire exactly one technical writer to perform the work. "Technical writer" is a very loosely defined term, and this technical writer may already be a project contributor. * For both proposals, there would be one interested technical writer from within the project. * All financials are managed via OpenCollective. The SFC is working to create an OpenCollective account for us / them in time. * In any case, general project finances will be unaffected. The proposals are listed on https://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/Google_Season_of_Docs_2024. Please read them, and respond with your preference until Sunday evening. If you have any improvement suggestions for your chosen proposal, send them as well. Note regarding proposal 1: There's a caveat here that we didn't include in the proposal, and that has to do with licensing. The SFC needs to check the original contract of Tav's with the publisher to decide under which license the updated book (and its source) can be published. In Tav's opinion, a CC license on the output (i.e. the website) should be possible, and moving the book to the inkscape.org domain as well. However, Tav would also like to keep certain rights to the book, such as preventing others from selling it as a book (so a CC-NC-* license), but also keeping the option for him to sell it. This might need a CLA on the repository of the book and definitely needs legal work.
