GSoC Mentor Summit/Reunion
by Josh Andler
Hello Board,
TL;DR first: Does the board want to fund any additional delegates travel &
room expenses for the reunion if we have anyone chosen by the lottery?
This year for the 10th anniversary of Summer of Code, Google is holding a
special Mentor's Summit (Reunion) which is a little different than in the
past. In addition to the normal 2 delegates we get to send where Google
funds up to $2200 (up to $1100 per person) in travel expenses plus covering
the room, they will hold a lottery for others to be able to attend as well
(however, it is at their own expense as well as the room cost). The people
eligible to attend the Reunion and enter the lottery are any of our
previous GSoC participants (admins, mentors, as well as students).
I wanted to find out if the board would be in favor of funding the travel
and room for anyone from our organization should we have anyone enter the
lottery and be chosen. I have not brought this up to any of our previous
participants yet for obvious reasons, but need to do so soon. One of the
other things that is different this year is that we need to decide far in
advance who will be attending. We need to have everything finalized by
6/20, so people responding to this soon would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Josh

LGM Reimbursements and the SFC travel policy
by Tavmjong Bah
Hi,
We received some flack over the reimbursement requests I submitted for
LGM. We violated the travel policy several places. Here are some points
to keep in mind for future travel:
1. Airplane tickets must be purchased 14 days in advance unless
permission is obtained in advance from SFC.
2. A screen capture showing the airplane ticket search must be
submitted. This is to document that the ticket purchased is within $100
of the lowest available fare.
3. Do not submit food receipts, currency exchange fees, etc. Instead
request a per-diem.
4. Currency exchange rates are determined by the Bank of Canada
website.[1] SFC will do the conversions.
5. You must state what currency you want to be reimbursed in, even for a
PayPal account. (That was not clear in the policy.)
I've attached a copy of the travel policy for future reference (it
doesn't seem to be on the SFC website). Anyone traveling at Inkscape's
expense should read the policy carefully!

[Referendum] GSoC Reunion Travel Sponsorship
by Bryce Harrington
A majority vote of the current board members is required for this
matter.
Proposal:
Sponsor costs for GSoC participants to attend the GSoC Reunion
according to the following schedule:
* Up to $1500 each for GSoC admins who have served 2+ years
* Up to $1000 each for GSoC mentors who have mentored for 2+ years
* Up to $500 each for students who successfully completed their
mentorship, and who continued contributing outside GSoC.
Josh Andler will act as event coordinator to provide a point of
contact for attendees and to collect expense info for reimbursement.
[ ] a. Yes, approve this funding proposal for whomever gets accepted
[ ] b. I might vote yes for a more limited proposal
[ ] c. No, do not provide GSoC sponsorship
Background:
Inkscape has participated in the Google Summer of Code Program for many
years now. We've got a lot of good code, several good developers, and
a good bit of cash from this participation.
Each year Google also has a yearly get together after the summer is
done. We've had on average 3 people interested in attending each year.
This year is the 10th anniversary and Google is holding a special
Mentor's Summit (Reunion). Google will sponsor the usual 2 delegates we
get to send, funding up to $1100 each in travel expenses and room costs.
In addition, Google will hold a lottery for others to attend, but at
their own expense. Eligible participants for the lottery include
admins, mentors, and students.
We don't know how many lottery slots will be made available to us, but
they estimate 220 total lottery winners covering a total of 190
mentoring organizations. So on average I guess we can expect something
on the order of 1-3 people.

I got "Refactoring" and to be honest, other than reading the inspiring
first chapter haven't used it much. It did motivate me to spend three
weeks to completely rewrite the horrible style handling code.
I also bought myself the other two books. "Effective C++" was my nightly
reading for several weeks. I found it quite useful as I rewrote the
style code. I also completely read "Tour of C++". I found it quite
interesting (I can't wait until we can use C++11!) but I found it a bit
superficial. I think the "C++ Programming Language" would have been more
useful (years ago, I learned all about the STL using the 3rd edition and
C++ in general from the 2nd edition).
I do think the book campaign was a great idea and would support it
becoming a yearly thing.

Re: [Inkscape-board] Inkscape: books
by Martin Owens
Hi Johan,
Thanks for the prompt to write something about the book. I received "A
Tour of C++" by Bjarne Stroustrup. The book is most useful as a
reference, explaining lots of aspects and designs that go into making C
++ and the ways people generally make programs in C++.
What I found missing from the text was more practical experimentations.
I find myself having to read it a few times over before any of the
information seems to sink in and this might be become I'm a more
practical learner.
I would recommend the book to anyone as a reference, but perhaps a
companion book or tutorial set to expand it's effectiveness.
Best Regards, Martin Owens

Fwd: Inkscape: books
by Johan Engelen
(sent a mail to all book receivers and CC'ed it to the list but it did
not accept my email address. 2nd attempt)
Hi all,
Could you give me some feedback on the book campaign?
Have you read the book, liked it, tossed it, wished for something else,
recommended it, have it next to your keyboard, gave it to a friend,
never looked at it, read front to back, read specific parts, etc..
Thanks!

google+ page management
by Alexandre Prokoudine
Hello board,
Since I'm not really involved with the project anymore, I only post
relevant stuff from the Inkscape's Google+ page when I have time,
which is once a month at best. I don't believe this is good for the
project. Hence I'd like to transfer the ownership of the page to
someone else who can be around regularly.
Currently these people are managers of the page: Josh Andler, Tavmjong
Bah, Uwe Schöler. ~suv was invited, but she never accepted the role.
Please use your own judgment who should be owner (there can be only
one), and who should gain (currently missing) management access, then
let me know.
Thanks.

Legal Statement for Output
by Martin Owens
Hello,
I've been following a Gimp thread about the restrictions or limitations
on the creative output in Gimp. Of course there is no restriction and
our license covers the software not the output. But some companies are
concerned or have questions.
So the question is: Should we put a notice/disclaimer/information in the
about screen stating in plain [local-language] that output from inkscape
is not restricted/copyrighted/limited and is owned by the creator suject
to local laws etc etc.
I'm not sure of the wording and maybe the SFLC could help bake a nice
sentence for multiple Free Software creative groups.
Thoughts?

[REFERENDUM] LGM Attendance 2014
by Bryce Harrington
The board is requested to vote on the following matter:
Proposal:
[ ] a. Cover travel and hotel expenses for up to 5 Inkscape
developers to participate in LGM 2014, maximum of $500
per developer.
[ ] b. Do not cover expenses for Inkscape developers to attend LGM.
Background:
LGM is an important meeting for the Libre graphics movement. This is
a good place to showcase our upcoming release, Inkscape 0.91. Having
Inkscape developers get together is always a good thing. Having
Inkscape developers talking with others in the Libre Graphics
movement might even be better.
Unfortunately, it is probably too late to have a developer propose to
give a talk on Inkscape at the meeting.
