Hacking Sessions

Hi, I propose we have two hacking sessions: The first would be at RedHat in January as proposed by Máirín Duffy. This session would focus on GTK problems and the user-interface. I think the opportunity to have RedHat GTK+ experts help us is too good of an offer to pass up. A specific goal would be to improve the Mac OSX port which is suffering from GTK related canvas redraw issues. I envision this hacking session be small so it would be easy to organize. It would be open to only those who have already dealt with GTK, Mac OSX, interface issues, or have deep knowledge of the Inkscape code base. Candidates to invite include: su_v, LiamW, Johan, JazzyNico, Alex Valenis, and Jon Cruz. We can ask Martin to coordinate event. This can be viewed as a "warm-up" session where we can gain some experience in organizing this type of event. The second hacking session would be at LGM in April. This would be a larger session, open to all Inkscape developers and covering more issues. What do you all think? Tav

Inkscape Website T&C

Dear Karen, Sorry if you're not the right person for this question. Please forward tot he right person at the Conservancy. I'm Martin, the webmaster for inkscape.org, we're currently offering the ability to upload files into galleries (10MB quota) and soon will email users alerts if they are involved with translations or when a new release appears etc. These website services should probably mean the website needs a terms and conditions, which would inform users of the limits capacity and service remit we're going for. Something like: "this website and it's services are provided "as is", and you should not expect the services to continue to work or serve any particular need. Your files should never be assumed to be safe here and you should back everything up. Plus we'll email you announcements and other alerts if you want, see your profile settings for details." We could do with some help putting together the right language in the right way to make it clear to users. Thoughts? Best Regards, Martin Owens

IRC meeting for hackfest planning and fundraising

When: Tomorrow, Monday Sept 15th at 12 noon (3pm eastern) Where: #inkscape-devel on Freenode IRC Who: Inkscape team; Karen Sandler Karen and I will be discussing plans/ideas for an upcoming Inkscape hackfest. The principal topic we want to discuss is the fundraising/budgeting side of things, but other aspects are within scope. All are welcomed to attend, but this will mostly be interesting to people wishing to help out in organizing the hackfest and/or fundraisers. Bryce

We talked some about how the PyPy proposals worked [0] for the PyPy community. I mentioned to Bryce that he could follow up with you from that February thread and discuss the fundraising plans. We also discussed some planning for spending funds -- and discussed the fact that having something you want to *do* with the money makes fundraising much easier. I mentioned the idea of funding code sprint travel, and Bryce mentioned that might indeed be something Inkscape wants to consider soon. So, I told him he could follow up with you, Karen, about planning and details related to that. It's not required, but it's a good idea to use the (R) symbol, as it puts others on notice that "Inkscape," the Inkscape logo, and "Draw freely" are all registered. You don't have to go overboard; you should add it to the About Inkscape graphic, for example, but you don't need to use it everywhere that you use name "Inkscape" or display the logo. The fact that Inkscape has published a trademark policy goes a long way towards putting others on notice about our rights in the marks. GSoC Mentor Summit/Reunion

Hello Board, TL;DR first: Does the board want to fund any additional delegates travel & room expenses for the reunion if we have anyone chosen by the lottery? This year for the 10th anniversary of Summer of Code, Google is holding a special Mentor's Summit (Reunion) which is a little different than in the past. In addition to the normal 2 delegates we get to send where Google funds up to $2200 (up to $1100 per person) in travel expenses plus covering the room, they will hold a lottery for others to be able to attend as well (however, it is at their own expense as well as the room cost). The people eligible to attend the Reunion and enter the lottery are any of our previous GSoC participants (admins, mentors, as well as students). I wanted to find out if the board would be in favor of funding the travel and room for anyone from our organization should we have anyone enter the lottery and be chosen. I have not brought this up to any of our previous participants yet for obvious reasons, but need to do so soon. One of the other things that is different this year is that we need to decide far in advance who will be attending. We need to have everything finalized by 6/20, so people responding to this soon would be appreciated. Cheers, Josh

The affidavit filing fees amount to $100/registered mark, or $300, and are required to maintain the registrations. I would also strongly recommend filing affidavits of incontestability for each of the marks as well. Basically, we'd be asserting that: - the marks have been in continuous use for 5 years - there are no pending legal challenges to the marks - there have been no final decisions adverse to our claim of ownership of the marks. The incontestability affidavits would strengthen the presumption of validity of the marks, and render them immune to certain challenges. The USPTO charges an additional $200 per affidavit, so the total cost would now be (3*200) + (3*100) = $900. If that seems pricey, we could consider only filing the incontestability affidavits for only a subset of the marks (e.g., just the "Inkscape" literal mark). I will plan to file the maintenance affidavits either way. How would you like me to proceed re: the incontestability affidavits? Please advise/confirm.
