I had a great opportunity to see Bryce today here at LinxCon North America. We discussed various topics, including how to do more fundraising for Inkscape and what plans Inkscape has for using such funds it wants to raise. We talked some about how the PyPy proposals worked [0] for the PyPy community. I mentioned to Bryce that he could follow up with you from that February thread and discuss the fundraising plans. We also discussed some planning for spending funds -- and discussed the fact that having something you want to *do* with the money makes fundraising much easier. I mentioned the idea of funding code sprint travel, and Bryce mentioned that might indeed be something Inkscape wants to consider soon. So, I told him he could follow up with you, Karen, about planning and details related to that. Anyway, I am primarily sending this email just to (a) pick up the February conversation that petered out and (b) make sure Karen and the rest of the Inkscape committee is up-to-date on what Bryce and I discussed today. Since the Inkscape marks are registered, Inkscape has the right to use the (R) symbol instead of the TM symbol. It's not required, but it's a good idea to use the (R) symbol, as it puts others on notice that "Inkscape," the Inkscape logo, and "Draw freely" are all registered. You don't have to go overboard; you should add it to the About Inkscape graphic, for example, but you don't need to use it everywhere that you use name "Inkscape" or display the logo. The fact that Inkscape has published a trademark policy goes a long way towards putting others on notice about our rights in the marks. GSoC Mentor Summit/Reunion

Hello Board, TL;DR first: Does the board want to fund any additional delegates travel & room expenses for the reunion if we have anyone chosen by the lottery? This year for the 10th anniversary of Summer of Code, Google is holding a special Mentor's Summit (Reunion) which is a little different than in the past. In addition to the normal 2 delegates we get to send where Google funds up to $2200 (up to $1100 per person) in travel expenses plus covering the room, they will hold a lottery for others to be able to attend as well (however, it is at their own expense as well as the room cost). The people eligible to attend the Reunion and enter the lottery are any of our previous GSoC participants (admins, mentors, as well as students). I wanted to find out if the board would be in favor of funding the travel and room for anyone from our organization should we have anyone enter the lottery and be chosen. I have not brought this up to any of our previous participants yet for obvious reasons, but need to do so soon. One of the other things that is different this year is that we need to decide far in advance who will be attending. We need to have everything finalized by 6/20, so people responding to this soon would be appreciated. Cheers, Josh

The affidavit filing fees amount to $100/registered mark, or $300, and are required to maintain the registrations. I would also strongly recommend filing affidavits of incontestability for each of the marks as well. Basically, we'd be asserting that: - the marks have been in continuous use for 5 years - there are no pending legal challenges to the marks - there have been no final decisions adverse to our claim of ownership of the marks. The incontestability affidavits would strengthen the presumption of validity of the marks, and render them immune to certain challenges. The USPTO charges an additional $200 per affidavit, so the total cost would now be (3*200) + (3*100) = $900. If that seems pricey, we could consider only filing the incontestability affidavits for only a subset of the marks (e.g., just the "Inkscape" literal mark). I will plan to file the maintenance affidavits either way. How would you like me to proceed re: the incontestability affidavits? Please advise/confirm. Trademark Affidavits

Howdy, So I'd like to propose that we file the incontestability affidavits on the name and the logo, but not the slogan. I really like the slogan, but I don't think it's as important to the project overall. We should file maintenance on the slogan though. So I'd propose this motion: I move we file maintenance affidavits on all three marks (name, logo and slogan) and incontestability affidavits on the name and logo. Total would be $700. Ted

The incontestability affidavits (aka a §15 declaration) are a one-time thing -- and, a one-time opportunity. If we ever wanted to file them, we'd have to file them within this current window. However, we would need to still need to file a declaration of continued use (aka a §8 declaration), as well as an application for renewal (aka a §9 application) every ten years for each of the marks in order to maintain each registration. In other words: once this we file these affidavits, we won't need to do anything to maintain these registrations for another ten years. But, to maintain the marks, we would need to file paperwork (and submit filing fees) every ten years after that. Hi all, Is this something we want to sign up to? https://continuousassurance.org/ After a quick browse around their website, they seem to offer a platform that runs static analysis tools. We can run them ourselves (and have done so not so long ago), but it is nice to have a website do it for all of us. (unfortunately, not many of us compile with clang; I gave up the fight on Windows a while back, and will have to try again later) cheers, Johan

Background: I (Tav) would like funding to attend the London SVG working group meeting, held August 22-26 just before The Graphical Web (TGW, formerly SVG Open) conference. I would also like back-up funding to attend TGW conference in Winchester, England should the event organizers not be able to fully fund my attendance (they have fully funded me the past few years and have committed to partially funding this year but cannot make a full commitment yet). This is a critical time for SVG 2. The new features I am responsible for include mesh gradients, hatched fills, and auto-flowed text. The move to "CSS based" text layout which brings in auto-flowed text (with a natural SVG 1.1 fallback) requires a lot of work which is easiest to do face-to-face. Critical decisions are made at these meetings (i.e. dropping SVG fonts). It is important to have Inkscape interests represented. Progress on SVG 2 can be followed at: https://svgwg.org/svg2-draft/ The London meeting is being held in conjunction with TGW. I will be giving an SVG talk at TGW, high lighting Inkscape's support for new SVG 2 features. I am already schedule to attend the GSoC mentor's meeting with Inkscape funding (see GSoC resolution). This request is for the additional cost of staying for the SVG WG meeting. (Santa Clara is next to San Jose, where the GSoC meeting is taking place. This is a critical time for SVG 2. LGM Reimbursements and the SFC travel policy

Hi, We received some flack over the reimbursement requests I submitted for LGM. We violated the travel policy several places. Here are some points to keep in mind for future travel: 1. Airplane tickets must be purchased 14 days in advance unless permission is obtained in advance from SFC. 2. A screen capture showing the airplane ticket search must be submitted. This is to document that the ticket purchased is within $100 of the lowest available fare. 3. Do not submit food receipts, currency exchange fees, etc. Instead request a per-diem. 4. Currency exchange rates are determined by the Bank of Canada website.[1] SFC will do the conversions. 5. You must state what currency you want to be reimbursed in, even for a PayPal account. (That was not clear in the policy.) I've attached a copy of the travel policy for future reference (it doesn't seem to be on the SFC website).
