draw a path consisting of straight lines and arcs

Hello, I want to draw a path which consist of straight and arc segments (the arcs are tangential to the straight segments). Is this doable in an easy way? Or another approach: is it possible to give fillets to selected corners of a path consisting of straight segments? (I am afraid the answer is no, but who knows?) Thank you Daniel

Try the following: - find a file called default.svg in your Inkscape installation directory (apparently in share\templates on Windows, on Unix-like systems it's in /usr/share/inkscape/templates). If you use a localized version, pick default.LANGCODE.svg instead (e.g. default.de.svg) - edit it using a text editor - find the sodipodi:namedview element - add attributes inkscape:window-height, inkscape:window-width, inkscape:window-x and inkscape:window-y to it (or change them if they are already there), with values that make the window fit on your screen (for example: inkscape:window-height="600", etc) - save the file I have not tested this though, so it might not work at all.

That depends on your operating system and window manager. Judging from your mail user agent, you appear to be using Windows. There, I would advise using the window menu, which you can access either by pressing alt-space while the Inkscape window is focused, or by right-clicking its taskbar button. There you will have choices to minimize, move, close and maximize the window. (These instructions are taken from my memory, I don't use Windows.) Hope this helps.

Overlaying svg files from the commandline

Hi, Im trying to create svg files in an automated manner (with unix shell scripts, command line tools, etc.) All output must be in SVG so that I can open the resulting files later in MS Visio and/or LibreOffice. I figured that one way to achieve this could be : layer existing svg files on top of each other. For example, I might have a (relatively) large svg file that draws a piece of grass or a lawn or something. I then have a (relatively) small svg file that draws a tree. I then draw the tree svg on top of the lawn svg a at a few different places at coordinates x,y. The end result would then be an SVG file of a lawn with some tree's in it. I was wondering if, and if so how, I could achieve this with Inkscape ? So far Ive only managed to convert a single svg image to another svg image like this : inkscape ./foo.svg --export-plain-svg=./bar.svg Is there a way to place small svg files on top of another large svg file, at specified locations in the large svg file, from the commandline, with Inkscape? Hi When opening a file the inkscape window opens partly off screen so the controls to close, maximize and minimize are off screen and I cannot move the window at all. The menu with file, edit,. is also off screen. How can this be fixed? Thank you for your help jake

Main Inscape Window Colour Scheme

I have installed the 64-bit version of Inscape for use on Windows 7, but the colour scheme is dark grey, so that the icons do not show up clearly. The 32-bit version has a cyan colour scheme. I cannot see any option in preferences to be able to change the background colour from grey to cyan. Is this possible, or must I install the 32-bit version? I am very impressed with the program, which will be used to prepare drawings for cutting out parts for making model trains and buildings. Mick

Can't ungroup Conditional Group

Hi, I'm attempting to ungroup this object http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c3/Two-stroke_engine_moving… When I try to do so in Inkscape it identifies the object as having a Conditional Group of 1 Object but then says there are No Groups in the selection when I try to ungroup it. Is this a problem with the file or Inkscape? Students can't affect > each other, because at the frontier all the tasks are independant. When I was doing development on Launchpad we used Kanban, so I'm reasonably familiar with the process. But it's nothing magical, it is just a way to organize and coordinate sequential interdependent tasks. It still requires a fair bit of upfront planning and coordination. It's like our traditional Roadmap system on steroids (I bet we could even implement Kanban *within* Inkscape with a bit of coding if we wanted.) The team I was on had only 6 members, and frankly Kanban was a bit overkill for us. I think it's best suited for larger teams. Or maybe teams with finer grained tasks than we had, or that require more intensive team coordination. So, I would love to play with Kanban more in team coordination, but I think for GSoC even if we did have 2-3 students working together I'm skeptical it would help all that much. Bryce

Inkscape has been invited to join as a member of the Open Invention Network. On Tuesday, the Inkscape Board voted in favor. In so doing we pledge to never use patents aggressively against the Linux System. We would never do this of course so the step is merely symbolic, but an important symbol. We are joining almost 750 projects and companies from the software industry (see http://www.openinventionnetwork.com/licensees.php) in a pledge that covers over 2,100 Open Source packages. This helps to reduce risk on the core Linux System and other middleware technologies. Quick Note & Question

I was preparing to vectorise some images from a website, and to try to save extra steps I decided not to save the images and drag'n'drop (or Open, or Import) them into Inkscape, but to see if I could not just copy the images to the clipboard (in Google Chrome there is a right-click option, 'Copy Image') and paste into Inkscape. It worked, but the transparency in the PNGs turned to black; apparently not just a display issue, because all the raster extensions (that I understood how to use) acted as if it was a regular opaque black, and Extract/Export produced opaque black pixels also. This would not be a problem since I was just using the image for reference, except that several of the images were originally black where not transparent, so I ended up with a solid black rectangle. I tried downloading and importing the images as I would normally do anyway, and this time the transparency was treated properly. Therefore this is not a problem for me, it just seemed like something I ought to understand the reason behind. A quick search shows that people have had related issues in other contexts, due to the fact that transparent pixels in PNG are black by default or something (so the colour can be 0,0,0,0?). Anyway, I thought someone here might be interested to hear about it, or knows more. Thanks! -Arlo James Barnes

The students are supposed to have firm proposals outlining what they will specifically accomplish and what the corresponding timeline looks like. Because of this, it's not really possible to have multiple students working from a pool of tasks to be completed. Honestly, I like your idea, however I don't believe there is a way to achieve this with GSoC that Google would approve of. Cheers, Josh

Hey, my name is Anna, I am a Free Software advocate from the UK. I am working for Open Initiative http://funding.openinitiative.com/ at the moment on their new feature-by-feature Free Software crowd funding platform. I am also an Inkscape user (here is something I made http://fsfe.org/graphics/xbox-infographic.png). So, some a question - which features would you just LOVE to see in Inkscape? What is missing? I will compile a list, using emails, forum posts, Facebook messages and the current list on the forums. I will also be talking to developers of course! I know crowd funding campaigns often don't get past the ideas stage because all the words and pictures are hard work to put together and people are busy etc - but I am here to help prepare the campaigns, which I am delighted to do, for at least the next month. Single SVG file to multi-page PDF

Anyone know how I could layout/hack a single Inkscape SVG file so that I can get a multi-page PDF out the other end? Inkscape -> layout tricks (maybe layers?) -> some process (maybe command line) -> PDF file with pages. At the moment I am laying-out logos and designs on a single 'page' which can be as tall as 9000 pixels. Is there a way to 'chop' a single PDF page like that into smaller chunks? \d

Decatenate/split path commands in svg files

Hi, I'm currently attempting to address a bug in another prorgam called nodebox, whereby the svg parser has trouble interpreting svgs that have their path commands concatenated. Pasting bitmaps from other programs

I just tried something I'm pretty confident I did in the past: I pasted a bitmaps from another program (Irfan View, and later Photoshop) into Inkscape. It was a small bitmap - 24x24 pixels. But no matter what I did it appeared with a size of 11.81x11.81 pixels. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? I tired fiddling with the bitmap preferences in inkscape, and also changing the image resolution to 90 px/inch on the programs I copied from, but nothing helped. I'm using Inkscape 0.48+devel r12395.

The 'layer icons' is to big

Hi. I have my own modified Inkscape icons, and I edit the icons again after layout change in the 'icons.svg' a few years back. But with Inkscape 4,8 I have the ugliest vector program on earth. The 'layer icons' is to big, even if I change back to the original icons svg file. But direct after the installation of Ubuntu studio, with Inkscape it was honky dory. Preferences do not change the layer icons, but all other icons in Inkscape. Inkscape 4.8 Ubuntu studio 64 bit 13.10 Maybe: I have my own made icon theme, and it have a old "index.theme" file. I'm using Inkscape to make web flash-style animations. I use the XML Editor to create and edit the SMIL animation tags, so I would like to see in Inkscape: 1.- Improved XML Editor 1.1- This bug fixed: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/663779 1.2- Improved User Interface, more intuitive way to add attributes, change it's values, add and rearrange tags. 2.- SMIL Animation support 2.1- A timeline to see how the graphics change on the animations. I work with printing press, in my experience opacity use to be a issue. I suggest to edit the image in GIMP, KRITA or PHOTOSHOP to the color level that you need and then import the edited image into your design. I'm fairly new to graphics and Inkscape, so please be patient with my ignorance. I created a brochure with text on one layer over a .pdf of a photo at 300 dpi on another layer. I set the opacity of the photo at 15% and exported the file to .pdf and sent it to my print shop. On screen both on my Mac in Inkscape or Preview and on their Windows machines with Photoshop the photo in the background was clearly visible. When they print it with a color inkjet printer it looks good too. Any darker made the text too hard to read. When they printed it on their high volume printer you could not see the photo at all, however. They looked at it closer and told me the darkest area of the photo was 8%. Can anyone explain this and more importantly can anyone tell me how to adjust the opacity to make it come out 15-20% in the final file. This is a fairly large run, so trial and error doesn't work. Freezing guides.

The Perfect Cover function creates guides. I like to add a guide down the exact center of each of the three panels, back, spine and front. This helps in centering objects or moving text on the spine so that he x height of the text was along the centerline. To do that I need to know where the existing guides are. The rulers along the top and left side are not fine-grained enough. I can double click on a guide and get its location via the Guide line dialog. But it is all too easy to move the guide or even snap it to a nearby guide instead. Two features would help me out. If I could freeze guides in place temporarily that would help me access the guide location without moving it. Alternatively if there were a window where all the guides are listed by location, similar to what Scribus uses, then I could calculate and add the center line guides there instead. Currently my only safe path is to snap a vertical line to the guides in a temporary layer so that if the guide moves I can snap it back to the vertical line. Or I can undo the unwanted move if I catch it in time. Antiquarian that I am I prefer measurements in inches. However when I zoom in the rulers still only show tick marks to the nearest 1/8 in. I saw the "DialogLivePathEffect: Manage, edit, and apply path effects (Shift+Ctrl+7)" option, but I would like to know how to set it right. --select=myobject --verb DialogLivePathEffect but then, nothing. How does that work ? I would like to edit the different values inside as well.. Thanks !

Ungroup to text blcks

I have only been using Inkscape for a short while, but noticed a problem. If one has a PDF page with just text produced by LaTeX, then imports this into Inkscape, the text is one huge block, which ungroup does not touch. Is there a solution to this problem? Not all PDF files are like this.... Brian.

New grid creation extensions for inkscape available

Hi, all. I've created three new grid creation extensions for inkscape. The first is an update to Cartesian Grid that allows the use of real units (inch, mm, cm, point) in addition to pixels and allows adjusting the color of each graphic element (Border, X Major grid, X minor grid, X sub minor grid, Y major grid, Y minor grid, Y sub minor grid). The second is a triangular grid creator that can be used to create grids with triangular meshes. The third is a perspective grid creator that creates adjustable 2-point perspective grids. Each of these grids can be useful for hand sketching aids, which is why I created them. You can get the extensions at: https://github.com/cds4/inkscape-grids I hope you find them helpful. Bug in conversion of line to outline

Hi, I've been working on a simple design for a logo. For some strange reason, when I try to convert the lines to an outlined path, I loose some rounded corners, while others remain. Make document square; keep contents centered

I feel like I must be missing something *really* obvious, but I can't figure out how to do this. I have a rectangular document that I need to make square, while keeping the contents centered. I.e., I need to add equal amounts to the left and right side of the document. How can I do this? I've tried simply entering the desired margin sizes in the Document Properties dialog, but it has no effect. Changing the width of the document to match the height extends the document to the right, but it leaves the contents in their current position, which is now shifted to the left. Extension to align boxes around text

Lots of bits of text with boxes around them? Here's an extension to automatically resize all the boxes to fit all the texts with specified padding, all at once. In recent versions of Mac OS X and X11, X11 installs as /Applications/Utilities/XQuartz.app. Could Inkscape look there by default, before asking the user to Browse for it?
