new post - wish list
by Andrew Kurn
I would like to post a wish list item. I'll tell you the topic.
You tell me whether I can post it to the new forum (possible?)
and whether I should (advisable?).
The current user interface for drawing and editing splines
(Bezier) is bad.
I like the Gimp one much better, but partly because I'm used
to it.
We can go into detail, but this introduces the topic.
Let's improve the spline interface. How to do it?

new forum, what happened? make a plan?
by brynn
Hi Friends,
As I mentioned a couple of months ago, I've lost my patience over this
whole "new forum" issue.
I've been given the impression that we're (as a community) going back
into limbo with the forum situation, and holding our breath that there are no
more black eyes resulting from the lack of (effective) management of
InkscapeForum.com.
I don't understand why. Why risk yet another black eye? Do most people
just not realize everything that's happened due to the lack of effective
management, over the years? Or everything that could still happen? Shall I
elaborate? Or maybe most people just don't care, since they don't use forums
anyway?
What yet needs to be done to make the new forum live and close the old
one? To me, it has all the features it needs. As far as I know, the only thing
that's still needed is load testing (lots of users at the same time).
If we can start it within 6 months, I'd like to propose that we make a
concrete plan (as much as possible, given that this community doesn't function
well with deadlines). Of course I'd be glad to help create such a plan.
If it requires more than 6 months more work, I would propose installing
a php forum (SMF or phpBB) and start it right away. Then some day, if the
Django-integrated forum is ever ready, we can switch over to it.
Thanks for any clarity on this issue.
All best,
brynn

Inkscape 0.92.4 bugfix release
by Bryce Harrington
Inkscape has launched version 0.92.4 with increased stability. This
update delivers some notable performance improvements for filter
rendering, saving and moving paths (with a live path effect), and the
measure tool.
Download Inkscape 0.92.4 packages here:
https://inkscape.org/release/
The key improvements in this version will enable Inkscape users to do or
experience the following:
* Align multiple objects as a group relative to a single object
* Write image data to standard output
* Experience extensions working faster within complex documents
* See improved speed when deselecting a path with many nodes
* Ungroup text elements won’t result in changed font size of children
* Able to print and / or print correct paper size with printers
(especially Canon, EPSON, Konica Minolta)
* See improved performance of the measure tool when grids are visible
* See proper opacity of partially transparent embedded bitmap images in
PDF export
* Able to Shift/Ctrl-click on control handles of shapes without crashing
* Build Inkscape with up-to-date poppler library 0.72.0 – useful for
Mac users building with Homebrew
Translation and documentation updates
-------------------------------------
The Icelandic and Brazilian Portuguese user interface (UI) translations
have been updated. Inkscape’s Ukranian and Hungarian documentation
translations have also been revised in this version.
Join an Inkscape project team
-----------------------------
There is always room for developers, especially those who can help with
the following:
* Package version 0.92.4 for Mac
* Prepare the upcoming Inkscape 1.0 to be usable on MacOS
* Help with programming a great UI for some of the new features in 1.0
* Help fix bugs and implement new features
* Wrangle Python
Head here https://inkscape.org/contribute/ to find out more about
joining the ranks.
Inkscape is always happy to welcome new contributors to help complete
documentation and other elements of the project that are translated into
many different languages. The project is seeking support with interface,
documentation and other content translation. If you would like to
contribute, head to https://inkscape.org/contribute/translations/
Another great way to help Inkscape is through Vectors, who are the
marketing, outreach, and promotion team for Inkscape. Designers,
artists, marketers, writers, and anyone enthusiastic about bringing
Inkscape to more people in more places, is welcome to join.
Inkscape alpha version 1.0 seeking testers
------------------------------------------
As the project advances towards an alpha release of version 1.0, the
Inkscape teams are seeking developers interested in testing the alpha
ahead of release.
Download 1.0 alpha at:
https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.0alpha0/
Report new issues in Inkscape's Inbox:
http://inkscape.org/inbox
Watch Inkscape.org https://inkscape.org/ and social media channels for
the latest details on the progress of the 1.0 development work.
Mac OS: Inkscape needs your help
--------------------------------
As few Inkscape volunteer developers use Mac, the project needs someone
who knows how to automatically package a .dmg file, to enable Mac users
to test the alpha version, along with Mac equipment to run continuous
integration jobs.
If you're interested in working on this, please introduce yourself on
one of our discussion channels, and keep an eye out for other Mac
volunteers to work with on this important task.

Issue tracking for Inkscape moves to Gitlab
by Bryce Harrington
Hi all,
As of this week, the Inkscape project is shifting to Gitlab for issue
tracking in place of Launchpad.
https://gitlab.com/groups/inkscape/-/issues
We've been using Gitlab for our code hosting and other purposes for a
year and a half now[1], and have found it to be reliable and
convenient. We didn't migrate Issue Tracking until now, so we could
take time to make sure we had a plan:
1. Going forward, new bug reports should be filed only in Gitlab.
2. Launchpad will remain available as a historical archive of our bug
reports. Filing bugs there will remain possible for now, but
discouraged.
3. Bugs in Launchpad that are still reproducible in Inkscape 0.92.4 or
newer can be re-filed on Gitlab and closed on Launchpad.
We are planning efforts to help organize the migration work and keep
track of progress. More info on this will be coming soon.
Eventually, when the necessary bugs have been migrated, bug reporting in
Launchpad will be shut off.
We're enthused about this change, and hope you too will find gitlab a
more user friendly way to report issues, and we'd love your help
triaging and solving Inkscape bugs.

PDF import broken?
by Johannes Bauer
Hi there,
I've been using PDF import to get stamps printed by the German postal
service and include them into my custom labels for a while now. Always
worked perfectly. Recently I upgraded to Ubuntu Mate Cosmic (Inkscape
Inkscape 0.92.3 (2405546, 2018-03-11)) and suddenly I noticed that there
are some bugs with it.
First, when I choose "internal import" when opening the PDF in question,
some text (not all interestingly) is messed up and replaced by black
diamonds with a while "?" in its center (similar to the character that
shows up when there's unknown Unicode characters).
When I instead choose the "poppler import" the imported data looks
perfect first. However, when I then copy and paste the image into a
freshly created Inkscape document, the text becomes very small and
messed up.
I've a package which includes the original PDF with which I can reliably
reproduce the behavior on my system as well as screenshot of how it's
supposed to look (looks perfectly in evince), and what the two failure
modes look like in inkscape. It's available here:
http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=23794298134224596755 --
I've never used that hosting service so in case it's junk and you cannot
access it, please let me know.
If anyone could have an idea on what might cause this, I'd be super
interested to know.
Thanks a bunch,
All the best,
Joe

Text extensions
by Hildegard Bingen
I'm relatively basic Inkscape user trying to learn some new functions. There are two extensions for text that I can't figure out at all: Extract and Merge. I haven't been able to find any directions. Can anyone tell me what these do or where to find information?
Thanks!
