pasting paths into 0.92 becomes rasterized
by Brynn
Hi Friends,
I'm trying to paste the vector Inkscape logo from this file:
https://inkscape.org/en/~inkscape/%E2%98%85inkscape-official-logo-vector
into 0.92pre2, but it's becoming rasterized. At first I thought it might be
because the file I'm working on might be getting big. But even in a new
blank file in 0.92, it becomes rasterized. I've tried countless times.
It pastes the Group of 28 normally as expected into 0.91 stable.
Windows 7, sp1, 64-bit, Inkscape 0.92pre2, exe installer, 32-bit
version. Inkscape 0.92pre2 15127
Anything I can provide for troubleshooting, let me know :-)
Thanks,
brynn

Er, moving servers. I'll get you a recent copy if no one added it to the
official Inkscape repos.
I'll dig it up tomorrow.

Hi Friends,
I'm working on a (probably feeble) about page contest submission,
and I wanted to use the new font. But the link in this message (below)
doesn't work (http://www.opendesignstudio.org/inkscape/euphoria_script.zip).
I got a 404 not found, as well as 403 forbidden (when trying the
tld). For all of those who may be participating, where can we find this
font?
Thanks,

Subject: [Inkscape-devel] Thanks for your votes! We have our new
"DrawFreely" font!
And the winner (by quite a bit, actually) is Euphoria Script!
Thanks to everyone for the votes and helping us choose a new open font.
The new font will be deployed to the website and relevant graphics.
You can start using it now in your inkscape-related materials by
downloading it here:
(includes font and ofl license files).

Have fun, and thanks again for the help!

towards a less confusing/congested Objects dialog (auto-expanding layers/groups, hide HL column)
by Brynn
Hi Friends,
I'm just having my first look at the new Objects dialog in
0.92pre2(beta) on Windows 7, 64-bit, sp1 (exe installer). I was about to
submit a wishlist item on Launchpad, but I think it might be more useful to
have more of a discussion, because there's a good chance I don't understand
all the issues.
First, thanks developers for this awesome feature. For the most
part, I LOVE it!!
I notice that whenever I select an object, (when the Objects dialog
is open), the layer where the object resides is expanded, whether I want to
edit the object or not. If the selected object is a group, the group is
expanded as well. So just looking around the canvas at a couple of objects,
the dialog is already scrolling.
I find it quite confusing with everything expanded. And this is
still a relatively small file, with 4 layers and 25 to 30 objects. Of
course I realize the purpose of this new dialog is to help make things less
confusing. But I just mean the visual appearance is confusing. I can
understand how this automatic expanding of layers can be helpful. But how
can Inkscape know why I've selected an object? For example, when I'm
helping someone in the forum, I'm not planning to edit the file at all -
just look at it.
I wonder if it would work to make the automatic expanding optional
(in Inkscape Prefs)? Or, I wonder if there would be any way to make it so
that whenever you select an object in a different layer from the last
selected object, the layer of the last selected object is collapsed, and the
layer of the new selected object is expanded. Could that work?
Different from expanding layers, I see the HL column, with all those
tiny red color chips represent the highlight color for the path outline. If
the user has disabled the path outline, could this column be hidden?
Thanks for comments :-)

suggest Pen tool set to reg bez curve mode for 0.92 stable
by Brynn
Hi Friends,
I've just downloaded 0.92pre2(beta) 64-bit for Windows (exe
installer) so I could dabble around to potentially submit something for the
About Screen Contest.
When I enabled the Pen/Bezier tool for the first time, it was
automatically in BSplinePath mode. I suggest, for both the sanity of new
users and the sanity of people who regularly help new users, that in the
stable version it should instead be automatically set to Regular Bezier mode
(or whatever the user had been using previously....although I don't think
the tool mode is part of preferences.xml).
I know that you probably want to promote interesting new features,
but I'm afraid this would be seen as more of an annoyance, than promoting
the new feature. This is one of the reasons that so many people are
hestitant to upgrade their computer programs. Because the new versions
*always* work differently, and people have to waste time trying to restore
their program's previous behavior (or make their program look like it used
to) (or sometimes they have to actually learn new things to be able to keep
using it).
Please don't make Inkscape upgrades more annoying than fun, and find
a better way to promote new features. Maybe something like a What's New
page on the website -- that's not the same thing as Release Notes, and only
covers new features. I'd be glad to help write such a page. Or maybe *do*
use the Release Notes page, and make a link from inside Inkscape to
it....like maybe in the File menu or Help menu, have a What's New item.
I'm sure there could be several options to promote new features
without risking annoying users.
And by the way developers, thanks for all the cool new features!
Just don't force them on me ;-)
Thanks for listening,
brynn

HSL tab in 0.92pre2(beta)
by Brynn
Hi Friends,
There seems to be some drastic changes in the HSL tab of the Fill
and Stroke dialog. I've looked through the Release Notes page, but I don't
see any info. Did I just not see it?
These are my questions:
The top bar used have colors from red on the left to red on the right, and
every other color in between. And if you wanted precision, you could use
the numbers from 0 to 255 to set the color. But now, the top bar is
something else entirely. It goes from white on the left, to some 2nd color
in the middle (red) to some 3rd color on the right (aqua). But *none* of
those 3 colors are the color of the object (which I initially set from the
palette along the bottom). If I slide the bar, it doesn't change the color
I set to white, the 2nd color or the 3rd color. It sets some other odd
colors. How can I adjust the color now - especially if I don't want to use
the palette to start with?
There's now a new 5th bar at the bottom, under the Alpha bar. It goes from
white on the left, to the middle color, which is not the color of the
object, back to white on the right. Adjusting that bar seems to have no
effect on the color of the object at all. Changing the number value doesn't
do anything either. What is it for?
The bars on the HSL tab used to be labeled, like the bars are still labeled
on the RGB and CMYK tabs. If they were labeled, it might at least give me a
clue.
Thanks for your help :-)

Test About Screen Contest
by Martin Owens
Dear Users,
I've just updated the website software to host our About Screen
Contest. I'll be running the real contest very shortly, but before then
I need your help.
There is a new gallery which should contain all entries to the contest
here:
https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/=about-screen-contest/about-test-contes
t/
This software update to the website is new, so expect a bug here or
there, but please do try and submit an entry. You can submit an old
entry or a new entry, it's up to you.
It will: Stop you uploading anything other than svg files, uploading to
the wrong category, uploading using the wrong license, uploading the
wrong image size (fixed size in the contest rules of 750x625).
If you find any faults with these or other errors, please respond to me
here on the mailing list, privately by email or by submitting a bug
report to inkscape-web on launchpad.
Thanks a lot!
Best Regards, Martin Owens
