Announce SVG::Metadata 0.16 release
by Bryce Harrington
SVG::Metadata 0.16 has been released to CPAN and will become available
shortly at:
https://pause.perl.org/pub/PAUSE/authors/id/B/BR/BRYCE
This release enables the --delete option to work for individual svg
files specified on the commandline. This capability removes the
metadata from the svg image, which is useful if you wish to replace it
with new metadata.
Enjoy,
Bryce

nice eps output
by Chris Pickett
Hi,
First of all, I really really love inkscape, and am using it for all my
technical drawings. If it had support for easily adding text to
objects, and connection points, it would be even better ... but I'm sure
these things or similar things have already been requested.
I would like to include the attached inkscape .svg file in a latex
document. Using the png might work, except that I can't use pdflatex
because I am making slides with prosper (which uses eps and is therefore
incompatible with pdflatex ...). So I am stuck with eps.
If I export it to eps, it renders badly in all viewers I've tried,
whether in eps or pdf form (gsview, ggv, acroread, gpdf).
I can get it to look nice if I import a png into the gimp and flatten
the layers in the image, and then export to eps. However, this (a) is
somewhat painful (especially for tens of images), and (b) doesn't
preserve the image perfectly.
Is there any way to get eps files out of inkscape that the viewers I've
listed (preferably acroread) will display properly, without taking the
svg->png->eps multi-application route?
Thanks,
Chris
P.S. I have gotten nice eps files out of inkscape before, but only
black and white ones without any transparency / alpha-channel stuff.

units
by Aaron and Sarah Spike
The other day I was trying to draw a path to scale in inkscape 0.39
(Debian unstable) so that I could borrow the path data, put it into a
pdf and print a path to scale spanning multple pages. I noticed that I
don't quite understand units in inkscape and I was hoping someone could
help me understand.
On the page tab of the document preferences dialog Inkscape appears to
use 72 points to one inch. The units in the path data seem to be 90
units to one inch. What units are these? Is there a way to make Inkscape
store the path data units as inches or centimeters?
If I change the grid units to inches in a new document, the ruler inches
change to inches. When I open the document again for editing the ruler
units switch back to the default mm and the grid units stay inches. Is
there an independant way to control the ruler units or a way to sync
them with the grid?
Is there a way to change the cursor position units? They default to
points but change to ruler units while transformig objects.
Thank you,
Aaron Spike

Printing Oddities
by Veall, Crispin
Hi All,
I seem to be having great difficulties printing anything from inkscape onto my
printer (Epson Stylus Photo 870). If I attempt to print anything, it comes
out as a large grey square, with the vaguest hint of the darkest parts of the
image elongated down the right-hand side.
I've tried using print direct, print image as bitmap and piping through lp,
and kprinter, to no avail.
I can print out to a laser printer at work, but that's a raw PS one. Any
suggestions on what to check, how to narrow down the culprit, or how to
clarify what's wrong most welcome.
I've tried to compile inkscape with --gnome-print, but that completely failed
(I've raised a bug on this).
Apart from that, I'm really impressed with Inkscape - a big thankyou to all
who've helped with it.
Cheers,
Crispin

Potrace not functionnal ?
by PENNEC Vincent
Hi,
I ran the win32/20040917 version (french translation) and I can't get
potrace to run.
I:
launched the app
opened the file/import menu and imported a png
selected it (click on it)
opened the Path/trace bitmap menu
Everytime (4 tries on different images) I get a message saying
Inkscape.exe:2052 Warning Trace::convertImageToPath: object not an image
What do I do wrong ? (Should I fill a bug report ?)
Thanks,
Vincent

[Clipart] RFA: Request for artist (fwd)

Hi
I'm (together with a friend) the responsible for organizing the next
year european perl conference (YAPC::EU::2005) at Braga, Portugal.
We would like to have a kind of logo, or so. We would like to have it
on a scalable format too. I know this is not the correct mailing list
to post this, but, is there anybody interested to help on drawing such
a logo (camels and so)?
Unfortunately, I can't pay for it.
Cheers,
Alb

Well, I tried to upload the example file to the bug tracker, but it's
too large(>256k)
Is there somewhere else that I can upload the file to?
Thanks,
Lee

gtkmm-2.4 required for cvs
by Michal Zeravik
Hi,
I'm very curious and try to get cvs state,
but I've got error message during configure
that gtkmm-2.4 is required.
I'm using updated fedoracore2, but there are
gtkmm1210-1.2.10-2
gtkmm2-2.2.12-1.1
gtkmm2-devel-2.2.12-1.1
gtkmm1210-devel-1.2.10-2
packages installed.
Should I wait for gtkmm2-2.4.*.rpm
or you can help me?

Crash occuring when copying an object with tile fill.
by Lee McLain
Hi Everyone,
I have gotten this crash to occur almost a dozen times, so at least
it's consistent!
The first step is copying an object from one document to another
that contains a tile fill. When the object is pasted, it does not
contain the tile fill from the other document.
Then, when the fill/stroke dialog is either selected or turned on,
Inkscape crashes comletely. Most of the time it will save a
work-in-progress(very nice!)
I am running Inkscape 0.39 on my HP ze4125 laptop running Suse 9.0,
kernel 2.4.21-243 with 256mb RAM.
The bug has been logged on the SF bug tracker list.
Thanks,
Lee
