organizing external extensions - need a little help
by brynn
Hi Friends,
I'm working on a project to list all the external extensions, on the
same page where I have all the best tutorials listed
(https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php)
I already have a list made -- approx 300 of them. And I've made an
attempt at organizing them. I'm using the current Extensions menu as a starting
place for categories. That seems like the most logical way in which users might
search for them (or expect to find them).
The Render and Export categories have so many that I've made
sub-categories. Plus I made a new one called Animation, which holds both
animation and presentation type of extensions.
But I'm stuck with approx 45 of them which I'm not sure where they would
belong. Plus, I might not have gotten the ones I did organize in the proper
place. Often extensions might fit in more than one category, but usually one is
better than the other.
I wonder if anyone might have some time, to help me out with this? I've
uploaded an ODT file as an attachment in this forum topic (which I've also
requested any forum members who might have time to help).
https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?topic=1261.0
For clarity, these are specifically what I need help with:
-- At the bottom (last 3 pages) is a category called "Unsure". Those are the
ones I need the most help with. Ideally I'd like all of them
categorized....except that there are several extensions I found which don't have
descriptions, and their titles aren't very helpful with knowing what they do
either. So there could realistically be a few left over which can't fit into a
category.
-- There are subcategories in Render and Export called "Other" (among several
other subcats). There should be several extensions from "Other" which can fit
into other subcategories.
-- Generally if you notice any that I put in the wrong place, please move them
to the correct place.
For anyone who can help, please just edit that file, and upload it
somewhere. (The file itself is just my working list. It's not going on the
webpage, so don't worry about the formatting or font. I'll deal with that when
I code the page.)
I really appreciate any help which anyone can offer. And I think it
will benefit the community as well, to have sort of a master list available, so
users don't have to spend so much time searching the internet.
Thank you very much,
brynn

texture extension
by Andrew Kurn
This is to announce a new extension. It generates random
blobs in a rectangle for use in a texture.
There are controls for the roundness, sharpness, branchiness,
number of blobs, and size.
Hope you like it.
If you can think of more controls to add, drop me a line.

Why is inkscape no longer able to handle jpeg files
by Bernhard Kleine
I have win7-64 and are running inkscape .92, gimp, lightroom and many
other programs. The jpeg files from lightroom 4.4 are no longer accepted
by inkscape. Everytime I want to load a jpeg it throws an error. Very
strange! Once converted by gimp to png they are accepted. Most propably
this is a bug. Please let know what to provide to report the error
correctly.
BTW Where do I find the saved files during a shutdown?
Regards Bernhard

custom objects?
by Bernie Cosell
I'm a newcomer to Inkscape so apologies if this is obvious... is it
possible to set up a bunch of "custom" objects? i can do it by putting
them in a separate window and copying them, but it'd be handy to have
them tucked in below box, circle, star, etc. i was thinking about this
because i just recently did that in visio {i think they're called "stencils"
there}. thanks
{and kudos:Inkscape is really quite amazing}

extension categories vs menu
by brynn
Hi Friends,
As I mentioned in a different mailing list, I'm working on creating a
centralized list of all the external Inkscape extensions, which I'll add to the
list of tutorials that I've created on my website/forum
(https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php). I have them all listed (not
uploaded yet), and I'm almost finished categorizing them, as best I can.
I'm going to list them according to where I expect they would show up in
the current Extensions menu. I think that will make it easier for users to find
them. As soon as I finish, I'll probably ask for help (maybe I'll even post the
request later in this same thread, because I'm very close to finished), because
some of them I don't even understand, and others don't understand well enough to
know where they should belong. Plus, many of them could really fit in more than
one category.
But meanwhile, I'm a little confused about something in the current
Extensions menu. I notice that the Stylesheet submenu is separate from the Web
submenu. I'm just curious why Stylesheet isn't a submenu *under* the Web
category.
Can someone explain?
Thanks for your help,
brynn

Yesterday was SMIL and today is Mesh Gradients
by Victor Westmann
Hi fellow inkscapers,
I was amazed to read that inkscape already has Mesh Gradients (since
version 0.92) just like Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator got this exact same
feature in the version 8 (released in 1998). 20 years ago.
But it seems that Mesh Gradients will be removed from the SVG 2.0
specification. My question is WHY?
That made me really sad and wondering: isn't there anything we can do to
prevent that from happening? Can we make a petition or talk to
Mozilla/Chrome/Opera/Vivaldi browser so they can implement this and this
feature, as soon as it gets traction, to be kept in the 2.0 spec of SVG
technology?
Ideas anyone? Is this too unrealistic or we can do something about it?
I remember google chrome almost removed SMIL feature from Google Chrome but
then the feature got traction and started being used more and more... so
they kept it.

Website Testing (upgrades)
by unknown@example.com
Dear Devlopers and Users,
The Inkscape Website is going through some upgrades, from python 2.7 to
python 3.5 and from django 1.8 to django 1.11. There's a pile of other
upgrades since I rebuilt the dependencies from scratch, but these are
the main ones.
I've deployed the new version to http://inkscape.sandcats.io:8091/en/
and I encourage people to hit the website and test functionality. Try different things and feel free to report issues to the inkscape-webgitlab issues tracker if you can (to keep the mailing list clear) but if you can't issues track, then fallback to emailing here.
When ready, we'll hopefully be deploying this new version to a new
server too, so it's all moving hopefully forwards.
Thanks for your help everyone.

Measurement preferences
by Will Godfrey
I work exclusively in millimetres, but Inkscape keeps reverting to pixels. This
is extremely annoying, and I can't seem to find any way of *permanently* setting
all such measurements to mm.
Am I missing something, or can this be changed?
