Get Previews from the Open Clip Art Library
by E. G. A.
Just an absolute newbie running Inkscape 0.48.2 in a well working,
really beautiful, vintage declared but loved computer (2.1 GHz PowerPC
G5 & Mac OS X.5.8).
To get Previews from the Open Clip Art Library*, it is needed to be
registered at the openclipart.org site and fill up the user account data
in the Inkscape Preferences**?
* File > Import from Open Clip...
** Import/Export > Open Clip Art Library Username & Password.
Thank you.

Fw: [Inkscape-devel] Website Down

Original address for user list was wrong. So this is just sending the
message to the user list.

Hah! Yes, I just got a fatal delivery error (from my isp) on that reply.
It definitely does not work either way ;-)

Combining text converts to path
by Brynn
Hi Friends,
I just stumbled on this and find it surprising. I just want to make
sure there's not some reason for this, before I at least consider reporting
it (one way or another).
If you combine 2 text objects (Path menu > Combine) they become
paths!
I realize that Combine is a command(?) for paths. (Or at least it's
supposed to work on paths, if "command" isn't the correct word.) When I
tried it, out of curiosity, I expected to get an error message in the status
bar that one or both objects is not a path. So I was surprised that the
text was converted to paths.
Actually I was hoping it might combine 2 or more text objects into 1
text object. Yes, I know the proper way to do it is cut/paste. But that
can be tedious, and I was hoping combine might just do that quickly. (And
yes, I thought about grouping, but I didn't want a group. I wanted a text
object.
Hhmm, after further testing, this must be intentional, because
combining 2 or more shapes converts them to path as well. Wow, and using
combine on just 1 shape object converts it to a path too. Let's see....yes,
using combine on a Group of shapes converts them to a single compound path!
I can see where this can be convenient, especially it saves a couple
of steps for a group -- if one knows about it. But is it really
appropriate?
Hhmm, well this is inconsistent then. When combine is used on a
group of 2 text objects, it's changed to a compound path, but it's still
ID'd as a group of 2.
Shouldn't it throw an error in these situations, rather than convert
to path? And for the group of text, the "Group of 2" seems
incorrect....assuming this whole 'combine converts to path' is intentional
in the first place.
Thanks for any comments,

Problem with snapping
by Pierre Massat
Dear all,
I am new to Inkscape, and I'm very much in the discovery phase.
I'm trying to understand how snapping works (I am aware of the snap
controls bar, of the snap tab in the preferences, and of the snap tab in
the document's properties). It seems to work all right when creating a new
object. However no snapping happens when moving an existing object. This
behavior is very counter-intuitive to me. In GIMP for instance when
snapping is enabled it works when moving objects too.
Is this the normal behavior ? If yes, how can I do precision work when
copy-pasting objects (I need to draw a timeline, with 120 rectangles, one
for each month for 10 years) ?
Thank you very much in advance for your help.
Pierre.

0.91 display issue
by Brynn
Hi Friends,
I'm using 0.91 and this is in the 32-bit (exe installer) version, on
Windows 7, sp1, 64-bit. This problem does Not appear in the 64-bit version.
And I haven't seen it in any other image. I'm not sure what it is about
this image, that might be causing this.
Attached are 2 screenshots of the display issue, as well as the SVG
file.
In the past, when I see this sort of problem, it's related to a
large file size, and can be fixed (temporarily) by scrolling the affected
part of the image off the screen, and scrolling back. But this is (a) not a
large file, and actually quite small, and (b) not affected by scrolling.
It is affected by zooming though. The screenshot was made at 847%
zoom. As I zoom in or out, those lines move to different places, and more
or fewer lines appear, as the zoom changes. But the only way to get rid of
the lines is to zoom 200% or below, and I just can't see the image well
enough to work on, at that size. So I can't figure out how to keep working
on this image.
If this is a bug, it's probably already been reported (or at least
known). But if not, let me know and I will report it.
Mostly I'm posting to find out if anyone knows what's causing this,
and how I can get rid of the lines. They make it hard to work in the area
of the artifacts, because the artifacts don't move....or rather they do
move. If I move the object, the artifacts move right along with it. I
suppose I could change the zoom by ten percent at a time, to try to force
the artifacts into a different area. But I'm hoping for better solution.
I thought it might be some corruption of the file, since I have not
seen this problem in any other image, that I've worked on in 0.91. But I
pasted the drawing into a new blank file, and still see the artifacts
(that's inks-display-issue2.png). Hhmmm....there is an imported raster
image in a hidden and locked layer, which I switched to Optimize Speed
display, so I could see the pixels. Maybe somehow related to that....except
that I've done that in other, much larger files (where I've zoomed much
higher), and didn't see these artifacts.
Thanks for any info or tips to fix it :-)
All best,
brynn

vector-effect: non-scaling stroke
by m .h. van der velde
Hi all,
I’m playing with SVG content generated outside Inkscape that uses the ViewBox property.
I’m experiencing two problems there, can somebody maybe help me with that?
1) It seems like inscape ignores the ‘non-scaling stoke’ vector effect. My view box is 30 x 60 (no units) large, the stroke width is 1px. But is seems like Inscape interprets it as 1 view box unit - and draws the stroke way to thick.
2) The same seems to apply to text. The font size seems to be interpreted as view box units, no matter what unit I define for the font-size (pt, mm, px) Also, the interpretation of the font size seems to differ between browsers and operating systems! Sometimes rendering the font way to large and sometimes way to big.
And, related to 1) and 2), I noticed when saving a SVG from Inkscape, that Inkscape doesn’t define any unit but the SVG’s work fine and accurate. Even if I define a box to be 100mm x 100mm. Is there a ‘conversion’ between mm and ‘units’ going on somewhere. Is there a convention how units in SVG correlate to ‘real world’ dimensions such as mm or inches?
Thanks for your help!
Maarten
(Btw, I would love to mention the website that generates these SVG's, but I do not know if it’s appropiate to do so?)

Creating flow diagrams with Inkscape
by W. Martin Borgert
Hi,
in the past, I created flow diagrams (e.g. https://xkcd.com/627/) using
Dia. While Dia is a marvellous program for such kind of diagrams, it is
quite limited in its design and layout capabilities.
Now I'm looking into Inkscape, but I encountered some problems:
I draw a create a rectangle and place a text object inside and
align the text object horizontally and vertically with the square:
+‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾+
Ask someone
for help
+_____________+
Later on, I change the text:
+-------------+
Ask someone
for help
or give up.
+-------------+
Unfortunately, now I have to re-align again. Is there any way to do
this automatically like in Dia?
Also, I would like to adjust the height of the box accordingly.
If this is not possible out of the box, but would it be possible to
write a Python script/plugin to do it? Can Inkscape run a plugin
automatically e.g. on every text change?
TIA & Cheers
