Edges of polygon surface

Hi, I'm exporting 3d surfaces from Mathematica. This creates a large number of polygons where neighboring polygons have two equal vertex-points. Following problem: Although no stroke is used for the polygons and the coordinates of neighboring polygons are exactly equal, theres a teeny tiny space visible between them. One hack around is to scale every polygon to 100.01% so that it overlaps a bit, but this is no solution. Does anyone have hint for me? I can of course provide a sample svg if someone wants to have a look. Cheers Patrick

Some PDF viewers are not following the PDF specification (which is still authored by Adobe) too well (in part because of the lack of methods for validation in ISO 32000-1), Adobe Acrobat is the benchmark to assess the validity of a PDF file. PDF remains de facto a proprietary format, not an open standard, even after the 1/07/2008 evolution (I am a Foxit fan myself BTW).

Open svg file with specified 'step', 'unit' and 'border' values from the command line.

How can Inkscape open an existing .svg file with pre-selected Inkscape & Document options? Is there a command line option to specify a template other than the default, or specify preferences without opening a Dialog? I've played with the --verb-list and grep'd through hundreds of extensions for the past 6 months, and haven't found an answer. I need to set the 'step' value to 56.25, set the document and ruler units to 'cm', and set the border values to 3cm. If you have concrete examples of setting these values outside of the GUI, that would be appreciated. If there is no current way to do this, how do I submit a request to add a command-line option to specify document & inkscape prefs without using the --Dialog options? - Susan

Ink 0.48.1 gradients and PDF

Hi, Noticed today that if you have gradients that go to alpha 0% then they do not show up in a (save copy) PDF. I have fairly old software, so perhaps my gnome PDF thing is out of date, but when I made the gradients go to white + alpha 100% (i.e. opaque) then the gradients worked in the PDF. Any word on the rules in this regard? \d

Mad thought - clones and paths

Hi, Here's a situation: You have an original path, say a seagull. You make a clone for someplace else. But, you need that clone to *act* more like an actual path than a clone. Say you want it to punch-out (subtract) from some other path. Now you could use the original seagull path, but that can be dangerous because it's your master drawing. To punch out some other path, you would have to *move* the 'master' to the precise position and then make a copy and fiddle with z-order and then do the subtraction op. And, say you are doing this many times - adjusting as you go. Now, if I could make a "path clone" and use it like a tool, that would solve the problem. I alter the master, the path-clone changes. I re-punch the other path. Loop until satisfied. There are other situations I have found where I wish a clone could be a path and still be a clone, I just can't recall them. Would there be some way to drive this by Python? I could point a path at a clone (or the master) and say 'take this shape' (i.e. an update of the path to match the source). It would be great if the two could remain linked and auto-update as the source changes shape. \d

Variable blur around a shape

Hi, is it possible to have a blur on (say a circle) that is bigger on one side than on the other? I need some shadow areas that have a stronger blur (wider/larger) along some sections that on others - all one shape though. Perhaps there's some clever way to do this with clipping or masking? \d

Hi Inkscape users and developers, I would like to remind the Inkscape users that the call for participation of the annual SVG conference is due in a few days. The conference takes place from October 17 to 20 at the US east coast, in Cambridge, MA. As one of the organizers I would like to invite Inkscape developers and users to present on topics related to SVG editing. We often had an Inkscape dev representative at the past SVG Open conferences presenting the current improvements or discussing problems related to the SVG file format. We also have an Inkscape representative (Jon Cruz) on the conference reviewing team. This year, the conference host is Microsoft, but the organization is from an independent committee that changes from year to year. Hi, Just popup inkscape to do a little drawing and something strange is happening. I can select tools, colors any menu and option but I can't do anything to the canvas. If i select the pen tool I can make a stroke. or a square using the square tool. Nothing. I check that the layers is not locked and tried opening existing images and it's the same the image is dislayed everything looks fine but I can't do anything on the Canvas. Any idea? Fill Tool Oddness

Hey all, I can't seem to use the fill tool in Inkscape (v0.48 on OS X). Trying to fill a rectangle object with a 0.010 mm line width (stroke color: blue) with no fill while sectioning off a chunk with a two-node straight line cutting through the upper half. I tried filling the area, but it only filled it and left a weird uneven margin on the end ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/25968780@...2823.../5552182877/). Clicking the white margin doesn't do anything. I also tried changing the line width to something thicker, making it the same color as the straight line, but same seems to have no effect. Checked for gaps, found none. I also tried changing the threshold, but that just made it not fill anything at all. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, -- david [.dh] huerta heatsynclabs.org

For example: I have: - Datasource [XML] that contains a list of data items - The Visual Representation (as an inkscape file) - A script that would combine the two and produce a pdf based on the datasource specifications I know I asked a similar question to this before, but I was wondering if anyone had success at automating this task. -Steven

transparent png

Hi all, I am trying to create one PNG image with a transparent gradient (from gray to transparent). All is fine but when I save as .png the part which should be transparent is actually white. I did check the document preferences. The color is white and alpha is set to 0.0. What I am doing wrong? Thank you @Simeon

Resources for Writing an python export script

Basicly I want to take only polygons, rectangles and circles from the svg, perform some operation on them and save the result to my own xml format. Now, I managed to write the inx file. Writing an extension for a new object type

Hi, I see that one can write so called "effect" extensions which are available through the effects menu. But is it also possible to write an extension that allows the creation of a new object type at a position where the user clicks? For example, an extension that allows me to click on a new button in the tools menu. When I then click somewhere in the image, a script is run which creates a predefined object at the clicked position. Thanks! Nathan

Difficulty opening a .ai file

Greetings, I'm trying to open a .ai file without luck. It says "Failed to load request file path-to-file-and-filename." Any ideas? I saw that some folks have been using ai2svg.py, I d/l'd it and I'm running it... it's been chugging away for about an hour with no .svg file in site, (it's still running). I have a fairly decent machine running it, Lenovo T410 w/ i5. Is there meta info in the .ai file that would be of use? The .ai file was probably made towards the beginning of the 2000's if that is helpful. I'm in Ubuntu 10.04, I'm using the native Inkscape version in U10.04, 0.47 Any help is appreciated. BTW I'm in love with the The Book of Inkscape, By Dmitry Kirsanov, I had to let a co-worker borrow it and I was sad to do so! We're both beginning to learn about Inkscape for work. I'm totally in love with this program. I got to sit down with my girl the other day and walk her through editing an SVG.. I think I got her hooked to. I guess I might be whining, but I don't want to bother with Illustrator, what a hassle. -Andy

Command line confusion - Inkscape 0.48.1

Hi, On the matter of exporting pages to PDF, I have been trying to use the cli without much luck. I have observed that if you fit the canvas/page to the selection and then save as a pdf (and tick to use the page) then the PDF output works. Any other way and it does not -- for example, if you give an object an ID and then try to save as PDF only that ID, it's blank. I have many objects --rectangles as pages, with content in each grouped to the rectangle. So, I thought to try the command line for: select an object by ID, fit the page to it and then save a pdf. Something like this: inkscape --select=bozo --verb=FitCanvasToSelection -C -A out.pdf mysvg.svg But that gives a blank PDF. The same actions in the gui work fine. My plan was to then loop that in bash and get a bunch of pageXX.pdf files which I could then join in some way, yet to be grokked. Anyone have a clue? \d

Hello, here's an update on the website. We have made some nice progress and it is defiantly coming along. It's going to be launched in phases. Phase #1 will be the main site with all the content and Phase 2 will consist of various things for the user allowing them to be able to post their own tutorials and plugins etc. However in order to do that we need help! We need the following: 1. content writers to go through the site and improve on the existing write ups. 1. Additional old news needs to be ported over. We ported over all of 2010 and 2011 but we need all news ported over 2. redocking toolbar

map units

Hello, I'd like to draw the map of a building using inkscape, and overlay my drawings with satellite views. A batch program would then modify the map to adjust the position of some points. Then I would like to import the svg file into sketchup and use it as a basis for quick 3d renderings. And now the question: which units should I use for the canvas? The building size is 50x15 meters. My first idea was to use this size as the canvas, but for some reason, in such a case, inkscape does not allow me to unzoom as much as I would like too (I cannot have the full drawing on screen). Is there as reson for this and a workaround? I know many maps and GIS use SVG somehow, how do they choose their basis unit? A Cheers

Rotating the Axonomgrid

I want to use Inkscape to draw some hex-maps and the axonomgrid is perfect for this except I want it rotated 90 degrees. This can be done with a ViewBox. 1. Create your file in Inkscape. 2. Save the file; this is your master. 3. Create one copy of the master file for each page you wish to print. 4. Open each of the copies in an text editor (do this one file at a time). 4a Using the text editor adjust the width and height to be the size of a printed page. 4b Still using the text editor, add a ViewBox with an appropriate offset. 4c. Save the modified file and exit the text editor. 5. Layered pdf?

I read the recent posts on multipage pdf with interest. I was wondering if there is any way to generate multiple layer (single page) pdf files from Inkscape. It seems through tests that this isn't possible and all svg layers end up as one pdf layer. Can anyone offer suggestions on turning a multilayer svg into a multilayer pdf? -Rob A>

Bug in EPS + Latex

Hi all, I just found a bug in the EPS + Latex option. If you have percentage '%' symbols in the text, when those are converted to latex they are not escaped. Hence, the latex get broken in that line. It is easy to fix, by escaping the percentage symbols by hand; however, if you have a lot of symbols it will get annoying to change those all the time. I just want to report it. HTH, adin

The 12th LinuxFest Northwest (linuxfestnorthwest.org) will be happening April 30th and May 1st in Bellingham, Washington. The "low stress Fest" attracts open source users from Portland to Vancouver, BC., as well as locals and internationally known presenters. It's free to attend the expo, the presentations and the Saturday evening after party. There are already a couple of presentations about the graphics side of open source. A presentation on Inkscape would help round out this track. (For that matter, it would be nice to have presentations for newcomers and for people who are more familiar with SVG tools.) Inkscape plugged in a local magazine

It's now been adopted by our town council's quarterly magazine, "Aylesbury Town Matters", which goes out to over 29,000 local households. The first appearance of the comic is in the issue that's being delivered this week, and we were fortunate enough to get the space for a short article as well. Inkscape on Windows 7 pro 64 bit - very slow, unusable.

Hello, I am posting on behalf of a friend who is stuck on Win7 pro (64 bit I think). He installed the latest Inkscape (as of about Jan 2011) and he cannot use it at all. His laptop is pretty powerful with min 2gigs of RAM; hell, it makes my desktop look like a block of wood! It's very slow to draw, to drag around or zoom. There are no advanced filters, or anything complex, being used - even a blank file with a single line in it cannot be edited. I am asking if there are any windows "tips" for using Inkscape? Is there some kind of "XP mode" or some advice re 64bit/32bit or maybe some graphic driver tips? Perhaps there are known clashes with other fancy windows software - like a colour enhancer (he has some kind of thing that makes his colours brighter on his laptop). Anyone have a clue what I could suggest to him? Thanks, \d

Convert to eps in command line without embed or link prompt

Hi all, I'm wondering if is there any command or parameter that I can set on Inkscape to perform a conversion automatically. For example, if you do *inkscape -E image.eps image.jpg*, then a window appears and ask you if you want to embed or link the image. However, I need to do this conversion for a batch of images; and I need an automatic way of setting the option: embed or link. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks, adin

Can't start on Win7

I was using an older version of Inkscape (not sure which one), and couldn't start it: "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005)." I upgraded to latest version (0.48.0) after an uninstall. I deleted all user preferences too. I am getting the same error. I checked in my AppData/Roaming/inkscape, and all I have in there are empty folders. What do I need to do to get this working?

Importing paths from OneNote to Inkscape via clipboard

Hi, I use Microsoft OneNote to take notes with my tablet, sometimes I need to modify the sketches - and there's no better tool than Inkscape for that. Simply selecting the paths in OneNote and pasting them into Inkscape works as expected. The problem is that the resulting objects have a great number of nodes, so it becomes very difficult to apply any further transformations. Even on a reasonably fast machine, scaling an object takes a while. I made a short video, to illustrate what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOcE7C4_NN8 The workarounds I found are: - press Ctrl+L multiple times to simplify the paths (Inkscape will freeze, but if you're patient - it comes back eventually). Don't be too greedy, if you Simplify multiple times without waiting for Inkscape to update the rendered image - it will crash. - save OneNote's image to a bitmap, then trace the bitmap with Inkscape. This produces objects that have a relatively sane number of nodes, but this operation takes more time and involves the use of other tools- it is not as convenient as copy/pasting. Taking notes directly in Inkscape does not produce good results. There is a delay between the stroke of the pen and the appearance of the stroke on the screen - so I don't see what I'm writing. Apparently, this short-timed lack of feedback is sufficient to make me hate my own handwriting. So, this boils down to 2 questions: 1. can someone suggest a better approach to migrating sketches from OneNote to Inkscape? 2. is there something I can change in my Inkscape habits in order to be able to take notes directly in Inkscape? Illustrator files.

I have a vector file that was originally made in Illustrator. I downloaded it as a zip file. When I unzipped it the file had an .eps suffix. GV can view it. Converted to pdf acrobat reader can view it. Inkscape only gets a black background. Is there a way to manipulate this image in inkscape? divots in bevels

cutting a sharp hole through a blurred object

I haven't been able to figure out a way to do this, but my inkscape skills aren't too strong. I have a drawing that at the lowest level has an irregular glow. It's a freehand path-based polygon with a heavy blur on it. The blur is all alpha. On top of this is path-based, alpha=1 object; nothing special. I need to knockout an interior region of this to an alpha of zero. It's easy to knockout the alpha=1 object with path difference. However, I can't figure out how to cut a hole in the underlying glow-producing path. It's easy enough to do the path difference, but this actually cuts a hole in the glow-producing path which then blurs into the interior, the part I want to be alpha=0. What I'd like to do is kinda multiply the alpha channel of two paths/groups. The (incorrect) approximation of this is to take the png that I produce at the end and map a particular color to the alpha channel. This doesn't handle the anti-aliased edges correctly. Any suggestions?

Gaz: That sounds like a lot of fonts. I'd use a font manager to create groups (based on style, typology, etc.) and load and unload them when necessary. Having so many fonts active will only make difficult to choose, will make applications start slower and won't help much. For linux you can use FontyPython or Font Manager

People, I have been on this list for quite a while because I am interested in SVG but I have to give one of my web sites a new look and feel and it occurs to me that there are some great people out there (who are much more artistically creative than I am) who could design a new logo, style sheet etc for us. I looked at DeviantArt but I couldn't see how to get a message into their system. What I am thinking of is maybe having a competition with prize money for the best SVG suite that is produced - how would I go about this? Is there a more appropriate list for this proposal? Any suggestions? Any suggestions? Hi Phil, maybe the contest is nice idea. The problem is that in this kind of issues the difficulty of decide which design is the 'best'. One possibility is to organize the contest where the prize's selection system is decided crowdly by votations between an open community of designers. If you need this selection and you dont have the device to do it, one choice is build it on your own.
