language problem

Hi, if I put the cursor over one of inkscapes tool-icons, a line pops up, that describes the function of the tool. I would like to know, how this sort of pop-up-line is called in english. In only one of this pop-up-lines I found also the keyboard shortcut for the tool (shift-F2). I would like to ask the devellopers to put the keyboard-shortcut in the pop-up-line of every tool. It would help a lot to all the people who don't use inkscape every day. Thanks, Hago

0.48 alpha report

Downloaded the 0.48 alpha package and started to play with it. My first interest was the capability to use CMYK colors. Before 0.48 the doctrine was that you could use three out of four CMYK colors but not 4 out of 4. With 0.48 as you move one CMYK slider one of the others tends to jump back to zero but not always. By fiddling some I was able to establish rich black at 60,40,40,100. Given that internally Inkscape is still using the RGB color model I wonder if this is a color that will actually be used for output. There are several swatch bars available but none seem to be expressed in CMYK terms. If in fact all possible CMYK colors can be expressed in RGB terms then it should be possible to use pseudo CMYK colors on the Inkscape color bar and pass these shades on to e.g., Scribus in RGB format. Hi, I'm trying to import some pages of pdf files generated with LilyPond. I need to import the scores as pdf, ps or eps because there are built-in postscript drawings that could not be generated by LilyPon's svg backend. I have made a copy of LilyPond OTF fonts into /Library/Fonts (have also tried ~/.fonts and ~/Library/Fonts)... (the files are: CenturySchL-Roma.otf CenturySchL-Bold.otf CenturySchL-BoldItal.otf CenturySchL-Ital.otf emmentaler-11.otf emmentaler-13.otf emmentaler-14.otf emmentaler-16.otf emmentaler-18.otf emmentaler-20.otf emmentaler-23.otf emmentaler-26.otf emmentaler-brace.otf) I can use these fonts if I start a new document in InkScape, but it fails to find the fonts if I try to open or import a pdf page. It seems to be an "import" issue, because I can open these files in Illustrator (I don't want to use it) and the fonts are recognized by the inkscape if I try to create new texts... Could it be a Inkscape/import bug? Does anyone have any suggestion about how to load the ps/pdf/eps lilypond documents? thanks, josé -- http://zepadovani.info

I'm now in the process of optimising and documenting my Inkscape extensions that implement the International Orienteering Federation mapping standards. There are some areas of the extensions that I would like to improve to make them more universal / intuitive. 1) Currently, a number of my routines apply formatting and patterns of tags or dots to paths (strokes). I would like to extend the routines to also be compatible with rectangles and arcs / ellipses. I assume that the routines to do most of what I want already exist in one or other of the 'helper' files like cubicsuperpath, pathmodifier and simpletransform, but as yet I've not worked out how to make them work for me. I need to understand how to implement the following from within a Python extension: a) Convert a rectangle to a path. Will rectToPath in pathmodifier do this and, if so, what do I need to provide for self amd node? b) Convert an arc/ellipse to a path. Will ArcToPath in cubicsuperpath do this and, if so, what do I need to provide for p1 and params? 2) I also need to understand how to apply a transform to a path (i.e. embed the transformation into the path so the transform is not required) so that effects applied to a heavil transformed path (as can happen when using ellipses / arcs) are applied correctly. Will one of the routines in simpletransform do what I want and, if so, which one and what would I need to supply to it? 3) I still need to provide the capability via an extension to convert a line into two lines of a given line width and a set distance apart. This will need to work with curved paths, both open and closed. The way that I would do this manually in Inkscape would be to create a stroke, duplicate it, set the widths of the two strokes such that the lower is the width of the two lines plus the gap and the upper is the width of the gap, convert both strokes to paths using Path - Stroke to Path and then to use the Path - Difference function to leave two lines of the required width and separation. How could I go about recreating this from within a extension? Is there an easier method to do this, given that the two lines should not be joined at the ends? Still outstanding from a previous request are a couple of unanswered questions (rephrased): 4) Ho would I go about detecting whether a point lies within the bounds of a closed shape passed to a Python extension? Is there an existing routine in one of the Python extension 'helper' files that can do this? 5) How would I go about implementing a method to detect collision / distance between dots from within an extension? I'd like to implement something similar to the 'Remove Overlaps' capability available within the 'Align and Distribute' dialog as part of the routine generating the dots, but with a single (polar - sqrt(x^2 * y^2)) variable related to the user-selected dot density determining how close the dots can be placed to each other. I can see that this could get complex when the area, and hence the number of dots, gets large. With regard to these last two, I believe there may be something possible using py2geom, but where do I find details of this? What are its capabilities and are they documented anywhere? ----- Jon

Unexpected behavior in Inkscape 0.47

Hi all, I ran into some unexpected behavior in Inkscape 0.47, running on Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit. When you duplicate and move diagram connectors, they don't move as expected. This happens on diagrams whose page size and/or orientation has been changed, and doesn't happen when the page size and orientation have never been changed. SYMPTOM REPRODUCTION * Open a new diagram * Create a diagram connector * Click the "select and transform objects" button * File->Document_properties->Page_orientation, change to landscape * Select the diagram connector * Ctrl+D to duplicate * Shift->Right The Shift->right moves the new connector down instead of right. From my perspective this is unexpected behavior and indeed when the page size is left at default, shift->right moves the connector right as expected. MECHANISM OF THE ANOMALY When you change the paper orientation, it puts a "transform="translate(0,-308.2677)" attribute within the <g> node of the Inkscape XML. If you remove that attribute, the anomaly goes away. If you put the attribute back, the anomaly returns. WORKAROUND When starting a new document, do any paper size and orientation settings immediately on the blank diagram, then remove all transform=translate attributes and save. Diagram connectors will then work normally on the drawing as long as the paper size and orientation aren't changed. I have no idea what side-effects this workaround would create, but I haven't observed any. WHAT I'VE DONE This looks to me to be something like bug number 479553, "Moving shape with connectors, connectors go wild", so I appended my findings to that bug report (https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/479553). MY QUESTIONS: * Is this a known problem? * Is anyone working on it? * Is this fixed in later versions than 0.47? * Is this considered a bug? * What side effects occur when deleting transform=translate attributes? * Can anyone else reproduce this behavior? * Is the problem that the transform=translate shouldn't be there, or is the problem that connectors don't properly respond to the transform=translate? * Is there anything I can do to help get this behavior fixed? Justification of text on an arc?

Hi If I draw an arc and some text, select them both and then Text->Put on Path, I get the text 'left' justified on the arc. I would like the text _centre_ justified. How do I go about it, please? Jim

William, it would help to see the bitmap or converted path to see if what I'm suggesting will work, but it was scrubbed. Here's what I would suggest. Make sure that your converted bitmap is indeed a single path. You will get feedback about this in the taskbar when you select the object. If it says '1 group' or "two paths" or anything else selected, you must ungroup, etc, until you have a single path. A single path can of course have many many separated shapes in it with space in between them Then, in the path menu, choose 'ungroup'. You should then see your shapes separated into a series of selection boxes all selected at once. Click away with the selector, then select individual circles. If you have overlapping circles, they will become a single object in a single path. Hope this helps. Dear all, I have a bitmap with many circles inside it, and I would like to manipulate each circle individually. I have already converted the bitmap to svg by using Trace Bitmap inside inkscape, but I dont know how to "ungroup" the vectorized figure and manipulate the circles individually. SVG Open 2010 conference - Last Call for an Inkscape contribution

Hi all, As every year we are organizing the SVG Open conference (http://www.svgopen.org/2010/). This year it takes place from August 30 to September 1 in Paris. Inkscape was always present in the past couple of years through presentations of Jon Cruz, one time also a keynote. His contribution was always one of the highlights of the conference. Inkscape is the most powerful SVG editor we have at hand. It would be very nice if the Inkscape project would be represented at the conference. I am sure there are plenty interesting aspects in Inkscape that would be worth being presented at the conference. If you live close by and have time and interest in presenting Inkscape, both from a developer, but also from a designer/user point of view, you are still welcome to submit a short abstract until June 9. The official abstract submission deadline is over, but we are still accepting late interesting submissions. Possibilities with Inkscape extensions

I've now nearly completed my project to implement the International Orienteering Federation mapping standards in Inkscape - three mapping standards, one of which has two symbol scales - which has resulted in a large number of extension files. In order to simplify things, I'd like to be able to have, for a given subset of the symbols, four separate INX files each calling the same PY file where a parameter is passed to the PY file, not user selected, indicating which INX file has made the call. Is this possible? Is it possible to specify a variable in an INX file and ascribe a value to it without presenting the user with some form of parameter input? Also, I'd like to be able to produce a routine to fill an inkscape closed shape with randomly sized (between a lower and upper size) and positioned dots where the user can alter the density of dots and where dots will not overlap / touch / be closer than a specified distance between them. This raises a number of questions: 1) Is it possible to specify a slider-type input tool in an INX file? 2) Is there a Python command or a routine in one of the Python extension supporting files (simplepath, etc.) to detect whether a point lies within the bounds of a closed shape? 3) Is there an available routine to determine the area of a closed shape? 3) Are there any simple ways to detect collision / distance between dots? I'd like to implement something similar to the 'Remove Overlaps' capability available within the 'Align and Distribute' dialog as part of the routine generating the dots, but with a single (polar - sqrt(x^2 * y^2)) variable related to the user-selected dot density determining how close the dots can be placed to each other. Expanding text

Hi All, I'm wondering if there are some good text tools in Inkscape or maybe the new .48 version. It seems very difficult to do things such as expanding text where for example the first letter of a word or sentence is say 10 points high and the last letter is 70 points high. Is this easily done? Inkscape seems awesome except for the text tools but maybe I'm missing something. It would be nice to convert a piece of text to one object and distort it accordingly. Not each letter as happens now. Any help or pointers greatly appreciated. Thank You George

inkscape for rapid "paper-based" prototying

Hi list I use inkscape for "paper-based" prototyping. I use layers for each screen and print them to test the prototype with users. Now I thougth instead of printing I could use inkscape directly. I noticed theres a property dialog for each object. So the question is if it is possible to use the "onclick" action to bring a defined layer to the front. Example: the layer "Main-Menu" is the top layer. On this layer is a button- object "Configuration". If I click on this button, the Configuration layer becomes the top layer. This way I can do exactly the same as I would do printing all layers. Is something like this possible? If someone know how to realize this, I would be very happy to get hint's code-example or whatever it takes. thanks for any hints ~nos

Grouping text and shadow loses blur

I am trying to take a piece of text, make a white copy to make a shadow which I have slightly blurred with the Object Fill and Stroke tool, but when I select one, hold down the shift key to have both selected, then Group them, the white shadow loses it blur. Input Devices Settings in current bzr version not stored permanently

The input devices settings (for extended input, e.g. tablet) have changed some time ago to a different format. Now, I can set the stylus device to Screen to have it pressure sensitive as expected, and it is also stored as this in the preferences.xml, but on reload if forgets this setting. My stylus device is called Stylus0, the eraser Eraser0. Setting the eraser to screen mode, in the preferences.xml I see something like <group keys=";;;;;... axes="x;y;pressure;xtilt;ytilt;wheel" mode="screen" id="E:Eraser0" /> but no such entry for stylus or Stylus0 exists and is created... -- Cheers, Alex

Printing problem with imported PDF and added bitmap

People, I am using: inkscape-0.47-2.fc12.x86_64 I: - opened a PDF form - added some text but also my signature - saved the changed form as SVG and exported as a new PDF - sent the PDF to the responsible person (a Windows user) but although she can see the signature on the screen, it doesn't print (I presume she is using an Adobe viewer). I think she was able to get around it by doing a print screen and saving to a doc file? This could be a problem if it happens all the time . . Ideas? Inkscape symbol templates (newbie question)

I am relatively new to Inkscape, and am looking to use it for general vector drawings, but in particular drawing diagrams (single line electrical diagrams). As such, is there anything similar (sorry for the comparison) to Visio's symbol templates, where one can store recurring symbols and simply insert them (and create custom symbols to add as the need arises)? Any ideas on how best to manage this in Inkscape (or indeed any other recommendations?) would be greatly appreciated; likewise if there are any single-line symbols available? Thanks, Mattias

How to use Type 1 fonts in Inkscape?

Hello, I am using Inkscape-0.47 on Zenwalk Snapshot which is a derivative of Slackware. I have installed Ghostscript Standard Type 1 fonts installed in /usr/share/fonts/Type1 directory. But these fonts are not visible in Inkscape. How to make them available in Inkscape? Thanks for your help. Anand

Hi! I didn't find anything on the Interwebs, so I resort to here: I have a Inkscape document that has several texts in in and most of them are properly (as text) output to PDF. But there are some that are rasterised and I do not get it why this is so. I have cleaned up the XML and even if I copy the XML style attribute from a properly rendered text to a rasterised one it gets rasterised. Any hints? Thanks so much, Andi

Why Bazaar?

Why oh why do we need yet another depository program? I can handle svn. I can even handle cmake, though it is a pain. But why not make the nightly update of Inkscape 48 available as a plain old tar ball? The leaders of this project need to understand that users like me use a lot of open source software, Open COBOL, Tiny COBOL, Gimp, Scribus, Gvim, Mozilla in all its variants, Tcl/Tk and so on. Most of these projects stick to the familiar ./configure, make, make install sequence. Scribus just to be difficult insists on the cmake route, and I have finally puzzled that out. I can handle svn (replacement for cvs) with a little help. But what is Bazaar (perhaps bizarre would be a better name) and who else uses it? I guess I will wait for the official release of Ink 48. Compared to the work on Scribus 1.3.5, the development of Scribus 1.3.6 was focussed on stabilising the code base, and especially on weeding out issues that were mostly due to the porting of the code from Qt3 to Qt4. tracing

Hello I have a problem with tracing. I want to trace with centerline so I get a single line which I can edit. That is not possible with podtrace (or is it?) Autotrace seems te do the job. To get that working with Inkscape I must install Autotrace and its GUI Frontline. But although autotrace has a win binary, I can't find a win binary of Frontline. Any ideas? Greeting Jos

Fonts question

Hi all, apologies if this is the wrong place or has been asked before. I looked through the archives, and my searches on Google were fruitless. First of all, I am loving Inkscape. It's amazing. Second, I'm having trouble with fonts. I have a downloaded font Lacuna (http://www.glashaus-design.com/), a really nice free font. The problem is that it comes in two styles: Lacuna Regular and Lacuna Italic, and I can't figure out how to make those two fonts appear as one typeface with two styles. In practical terms: I'd like to select not "Lacuna Regular" or "Lacuna Italic", but "Lacuna", and then have regular by default and the italic style if I hit ctrl-I. Right now to get the true italic font I have to select it from the drop-down list of fonts; if I use ctrl-I I get the faked-out italic instead of the true style. I have tried messing with the fonts.scale file so that Lacuna Regular and Lacuna Italic both appear to be styles of the family Lacuna, instead of two different families, but Inkscape did not pick this up. Any suggestions? Thanks, Drew.

ungrouping a bunch of 3d boxes delete all of them

I've got a drawing in which a handful of 3d-boxes are grouped (and I'm not sure how that happened). I want to ungroup them, but when I select the group and do object->ungroup, all of them just vanish. AFAICT, they've been deleted. If I do edit->undo, the group returns. Help required changing style attributes from a Python extension.

I am attempting to implement the full International Orienteering Federation mapping standards (ISOM:2000 and ISSOM:2007) within Inkscape. So far, I've created a GIMP palette containing the standard colours required, using this across the bottom of my Inkscape window. I've also written an extension to generate the required point symbols and produced many of the required fill patterns, incorporating them into patterns.svg. I'm not happy with modifying patterns.svg as this is one of the standard files provided with Inkscape. I've seen the way that the X-moto extensions use dialog boxes for changing .jpg and .png block textures and would like to do something similar for my svg patterns, but this is a medium-term objective. The remaining symbol type that I'm looking to implement is the lines. Different line styles from simple continuous lines of a given width and colour to complex dashed lines with superimposed symbols at regular intervals are required. Given the examples available in the current Pattern along Path and Scatter extensions, the creation of the superimposed symbols isn't seen as a problem. The problem that I'm having is in what should be a simple task - that of changing the style attributes of an existing line. I can create new dash styles by editing the preferences.xml file in my personal user area but, for many reasons, do not see this as as a realistic option and not one that could be distributed to other users. I've been trying to write a simple Python extension that will take a selected line or number of lines and replace the style of the original with a different set of style attributes without changing its path. I've looked through the currently distributed Python extensions for clues as to how to do this, but have not been successful. I've even started looking at the 1000+ page Python 2.6.4 online manual (is this the version of Python implemented in Inkscape?) but this hasn't really helped, although I've picked up some pointers for better Python coding. I'm assuming that there is a subroutine in one of the 'helper' files - inkex.py, pathmodifier.py, ... etc. that would help with this but haven't determined which one it could be. I would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction. Jon

Node tool selection with tablet

Yesterday I pulled a new bzr checkout from Inkscape and compiled it, but found the following problem: When in node tool mode (F2) and selecting some nodes by dragging a rectangle over them Inkscape doesn't get the mouse up event and continues to draw the rectangle as I move the (now free floating) pointer around. If I press again on the tablet, the rectangle becomes fixed, and nothing is selected; the rectangle stays as grahical debris, and everything else is as if I didn't select anything. Using the normal mouse works as before. I use the tablet (XInput) in Screen Mode. In the previous version (pulled roughly one week ago) it worked as expected. I'm not too bazaar-savvy to go back and check out when it did change (in svn I could simply revert, but how to do it in bzr?) -- cheers, Alex

Hey all, This is where 0.48 as a "release" begins! This email will be a little redundant for developers, but will let users know what the current plan is. The next stage (Frost) kicks into gear at the beginning of March in case you were wondering. For right now: *New feature development will focus on wrapping up. *We will identify "make check" issues (we need to make sure things are "friendly" for packaging). *We will run an About Screen contest on DeviantART (which I will announce within the next 24 hours and post all info to both lists). *Ensure that the Release Notes are at First Draft stage. This is primarily a developer task, however, if you are a user and follow development closely and have something to contribute in this area which we may have overlooked, such as fixed bugs, changes in functionality, etc. please contribute. *Update tutorials and other docs (we could use volunteers). Not joking, if you are an Inkscape user and have the misconception that the only way you can contribute is by code, you are missing out on one of the most important things for our users... documentation. If you have time to spare and some tips for others that you're willing to share, please let us know. --- boring developer junk --- I do want to request from developers... most "big" new stuff be committed by March 1st if possible (or shortly thereafter). JonCruz: The swatch previews for "auto" swatches are starting to worry me given that they have not been working for quite a while now (since 0.47 dev cycle). The same goes for the method of editing color (gradient editor rather than F&S dialog). If you will not have time to address these before Freeze, please expect that I will request the feature is disabled again for this release at that time... I will also request that in 0.49 that you not re-enable it until you are looking to actively work on it. Krzysztof: The new Node Tool is fantastic. I know you're actively working on it, but I do just want to make sure that you will be able to set aside a few hours here and there for bugfixing as there are still a number of bugs and features missing from previous releases. Arcadie/Michael: The Connector Tool really is not consistent with the behavior of other tools. If it is not likely to be sorted out by Freeze, I will request that at least the tool controls button for "add connection point" be disabled, as it is not user friendly at this point. Please know that I am not targeting people or criticizing their work. This is a schedule issue and our date of release was horribly far behind schedule for the past couple releases. We will just be sticking to release schedules much more strictly than we have previously, and if features aren't "bug-free"/complete enough to release on time... there's always next release! :) Besides, we're going to be in the trenches w/ 0.49 for a bit by what has been discussed so far. New support for SVG-scalable vector graphics Sure, you can offer a PDF download for complex content like floor plans and org charts, but why not make these decipherable right inside the Web page? SVG allows just that. SVG is a W3C standard for animated, interactive graphics based on paths rather than bitmaps. No matter how much you zoom in on an SVG image, edges remain razor sharp—unlike bitmapped image formats like JPEG, which show degradation as you enlarge them. This holds true for text, too; that's key for the org-chart example mentioned above. In fact, John Hrvatin, senior program manager lead for Internet Explorer, told journalists that IE9 is the first browser that natively supports SVG inline with HTML—previously XHTML was required. SVG is the descendant of VML, which came out of the Visio drawing tool. Other browsers use SVG for the popular map sites, while until version 9, IE has uses VML. "SVG is a huge standard," said Visio veteran and now Internet Explorer partner program manager Ted Johnson. "We're not doing all of it in the first release, but we're doing a tremendous amount of it. Progress on 0.48 snapshot for MacOSX?

Hey, all. I'm very excited to play and report bugs for 0.48, though the only compiled binaries I've seen have been for Windows. I'm wondering if a) someone knows of a nightly 0.48 snapshots directory for Mac OS, or if b) someone could tell me what to do to try to compile my own. I want to help. I want to contribute. I want to squash bugs. I want Inkscape to continue to be the best open source illustration application in existence. I'm most familiar with compiling in Linux, e.g. ./configure&&make&&make install&&make clean What do I need to do to get the sources and compile in Mac OS 10.5.8? I've been more of a user than a developer there. Anyone know of a good quick overview that is applicable to Inkscape's sources? I'll RTFM if you tell me where it is. Thanks in advance! Export as PDF with embedded bitmap: resoltion of export in dpi not used, JPEG exported a PNG?

Hi, I want to use some bitmaps (PNG or JPEG file) in Inkscape. If I export the file as PDF and set a resolution in DPI it is ignored. I can change it to 2 dpi and the image still look the same and the file size also does not change. If I use a JPEG file as import bitmap the file size rises. It seem that it is saved as PNG in the exported PDF file. Can you help me with a proper pdf export that reuses the imported file type and the resolution in the export file dialogue. TIA Martin

Reducing the pdf in size.

Just finished my first Inkscape book cover. The pdf is huge, over 16 mb. Can anyone suggest a way to reduce it? I tried changing the dpi for rasterization from 600 dpi to 300 dpi and it just got bigger! The Perfect bound template is found under Extensions==>Render. One of the parameters is for cover thickness. Do I enter the thickness for one side or for both? For example 360 Digital Books asks for a cover thickness allowance of .038 inch. It is clear from the context that this is for both front and back covers. SVG support now embeddable in Firefox 3.6

I don't know about anyone else, but I just found out you can embed SVG instructions right alongside HTML in a web document in FF3.6. But to get it to work, you have to flip on the 'html5.enabled=true' in about:config. You can embed SVG images right inside your html now. Also, the Firebug extension, apparently added support for SVG's namespace to allow tinkering /debugging / seeing how SVG works directly in the browser. An example of intermixed svg is at: http://burningbird.net/svg/example4.html. If you have it enabled, you see a turquoise shaded panel on either side of the text, otherwise, its white. You don't have to restart the browser to toggle it. I have the about:config open in a separate window and searched on 'html5'. Brought up brought up 1 result. Double clicking on it toggles the value. the code has <p>...</p></div><svg preserveAspectRatio='none" viewBox=0 0 400 250" version=1.1" .. </svg> </body> </html> doctype at top (no mention of svg -- it's just part of the XHTML). <!DOCTYPE html> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en"> <head>....
