landscape printing?

I know I saw someone else post something about this. I cannot seem to print in landscape mode in Inkscape 0.46. I used a slackbuild from Slackbuilds.org on Slackware 12.1 (source compile). I tried the workaround posted on the site below, but lpr apparently expects a printer directly hooked to a parallel port and mine is a network printer. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/219640 I also tried printing to a file and then to the printer (an HP LaserJet 6MP hooked to an HP JetDirect 300x Network printing interface), I still got portrait mode. I suppose I can do everything in Landscape, then group the whole works and rotate it 90 degrees, but I am wondering if someone has found a workaround for this.

outline-drawing for specific layers and general performance-improvements

Hello, currently i'am working on an relativly complex drawing. its a cinema seatplan.with all those detailed seats inkscape is renders really slow and freezes a lot of times. the outlinemode is working well but it would be nice if i could turn it on for only one or more specific layers. this is a feature-request.. some others ideas to speed up inkscape? its fine for simple graphics but gives a slow-motion-feeling at bigger jobs. i've read some discussions about multicore-support and i would also appreciate that. normally i'm a software-developer so my point of view is perhaps a little bit different from that one a normal user has. i know that this isn't a trivial thing but imho it has to be done to moving on to the magic you can do with adobe's illustrator or the freehand-thing. i'm not shure but i think that illustrator cannot do that too. whats about rendering with the gpu? a pluginable renderingsystem to be platform-independent. ok.. for now.. greetings and have a nice day :) -- Mit freundlichem Gruß Dennis Schulz Fon: +49.203.73 82 0 95 Mobil: +49.160.78 75 4 66 http://www.port42.org http://www.nuenni.de

bug?

Every once in a while, I get a path that I can't change the node type on or that won't let me draw out both control handles with shift/click on the node. I can pull one handle out, but when I go to do a second handle, it just moves the node itself instead of drawing out the handle. I am running .46 on a Slackware 12.1 installation.

Good Grief to Grids

Okay, I'm getting really cheesed with the grids on Inkscape. Why does the grid spacing adjust when I zoom? And, why is it not at least proportional to the page/objects I'm working on? TikZ/PGF exporter ready for testing

Dear Inkscape-users, For some time now I have been working on an Inkscape extension for exporting to TikZ/PGF format for use with (La)TeX: http://code.google.com/p/inkscape2tikz/ It is similar in nature to the pstricks exporter already available in Inkscape. One obvious difference is that it relies on the PGF macro package. Another difference is that the output is higher level and easier to modify. Text is exported as plain TikZ nodes There are still a few rough edges, but the exporter is already in a usable state. My question is: Is there a more comprehensive documentation somewhere about the several modules, classes and their methods and attributes? How to set mm to px ratio

Hi, Is there a way to specify mm to px conversion when exporting svg using inkscape --export-png? The --export-dpi doesn't help because it's overwritten by --export-width. What I want is have one svg - map. The image will be exported for different zoom levels, so the pixel size of exported image will vary. But pixel width of roads should remain the same. In batik, I can specify road width in mm and then set different different mm to px ratio for each zoom level to get the same road width at all zoom levels. But I can't find such option in inkscape. Is there some way or workaround how to do this in inkscape? -- Jiri

Surprising response to a bug

I've been using Inkscape for along time now - over 2 years - and all my schematic drawing are now in SVG form. I always work in landscape, using a template file with a standard frame etc. When I upgraded my distro to debian lenny, I noticed that it now carried Inkscape version 0.46. I didn't think a lot about it, although noticed there were oddities with the new way of setting out grids. This was a minor nuisance, but was quickly rectified, and the overall behaviour seemed improved. It was only recently when I tried to print out one of these files I realised there was a serious problem. Looking around the 'net I noticed that a lot of other people had the same issue (can't print landscape). However, when I went onto the bug tracker to see what was happening, I was quite astonished to see this had been assigned a low priority. I don't understand how a printing failure on a graphics package can be thought of as unimportant. The only practical workaround I can find is to save these as pdf then use evince to print them. I'm considering going back to v 0.45 but that will mean re-doing all the grid settings again. I fully support the work being done on inkscape and have been singing it's praises to anyone who'll listen, but I really hope this gets sorted out sooner rather than later. -- Will J Godfrey http://www.musically.me.uk

svn-19741 node tool crash

I just updated svn to 19741 and it has an odd crash situation - If I open a document or create new and add objects, I can manipulate the objects with either the select tool or the node tool with no problems. However, if I convert any object to a path and select the path with the node tool, Inkscape crashes as soon as I click on the path. I also tried drawing a rectangle, converting to a path and selecting with the select tool. Then I chose the node tool so that the path nodes are displayed and I tried rubberbanding 2 of the nodes. The moment I let go of the mouse button, Inkscape crashes. file format for printing

Hi, I apologize for asking what I'm sure is an incredibly basic question, but internet answers seem to be too technical for my understanding or non-existant. I don't know which file format I should use in order to send an inkscape generated document off for printing. The file that I'm working with is a fairly simple 8.5 x 11" document. In the past I'd saved a similar document as a pdf to send to the printers, but this time it doesn't seem to be appearing exactly as shown in my inkscape file. Do I need to download Cairo to fix this? I went to that site but felt fairly confused by the array of available options. Is pdf even the best option for printing? Could someone shed some light on this for me? Thanks so much. Julie

Inkscape stuff imported into blender (images)

This first thing involves taking a square in Inkscape and then using some text and the boolean functions to "cut" the text out of the square, i.e. to create a text shaped hole. This was then imported into Blender and a light with the halo option turned on was animated behind the object, pointed toward the camera. http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/4851/halotextvx4.gif This was done by using the gear script, then using various boolean operations to add the letters and the connections between the letters and the gears. Oh man. I figured it out once I examined the file you attached. I was mistakenly setting the fill and stroke to "none" with the 'X" button, not UNsetting them with the "?" button in the Fill&Stroke dialog. It works as advertised now. Silly mistake. Tiled Clones Trace Question

Hi, I'm playing around with the Trace option for tiled clones and I'm having a problem. I'm creating an 8x8 grid of tiled rectangles overtop of a bitmap (I tried this with a gradient filled rectangle underneath as well). Using the trace tab, i can get the clones to be output based on presence, opacity, and size, but I can't seem to get them to be created based on the underlying object's color as is described here: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Tiles-Trace.html I've made sure the base object has an unset fill (which the tooltip and article recommend) but I still can't recreate the example in Tavmjong's guide. Any clues as to what I'm doing wrong? RQ

Tiled Clones - Artifacts?

to adjust the default zoom level on the default document opened by inkscape? I've been playing with some settings in the default.svg file. I managed to get it to open a 500 x 500 px page with no boarder. I'd like to have the page zoomed to fit the screen. I see a setting of inkscape:zoom = "0.35" but that doesn't seem to work as adjust in the zoom level in inkscape has no effect on this value in the xml editor. Patterns. How?

Hello list! I write to you out of sheer ignorance. I generated a pattern with some paths and I'd like to use it as a sort of "texture" and apply it to another path... Is there an automated way of doing this, or should I group/join the paths and repeat them over the path I want to cover "ad nauseam"? I do believe there was a function in 0.46 (or was it since 0.45?) that helped doing that (or so I believe), but I don't seem to find said function. Thanks in advance for any tips!

How to control the rotation of objects?

Hi again! I now have a different question. This time it has to do with rotating objects. Is there a way to control how much an object is rotated other than the 90° function? Something similar to the GIMP's rotation tool where you can choose the actual number of degrees by which you want to rotate a given object? Dealing with patterns (see my other post) I am attempting to generate a pattern off different rotation angles of some paths, however I find it very difficult to obtain the desired effect by manually turning every shape into the position I want it/need it to be 100% symmetrical. Is there a way to assess the rotation of objects? (sorry if my n00bishness shows, but I'm a n00b!). Just for the record, I'm attempting this in Inkscape 0.46 on Fedora 8.

Slicing and selecting

Hi, Found myself trying to slice-up a page and realised that I can't select the rects that are 'invisible'. I make them alpha 0% so they won't show, but then I can't select them. I followed HeathenX's tut on youtube, doing everything the same way, but he selects the hidden rects click-click no problem, I can't do that on my end. Is there some trick to this? \d

Snap to grid when pasting

Hi, Apologies if the issue is already known, but I haven't found anything by making a Google search. When I recently switched to Inkscape 0.46, I discovered that objects are no longer snapped to the grid when pasted from the clipboard. It used to work before and I was finding that quite handy. In the "Snap" tab of the Document Properties dialog box I ticked the "Enable snapping" and "Nodes" options. The release notes for 0.46 say that grids have undergone big changes. Did that behaviour get lost during the refactoring? Is that a new option that I missed? Many thanks for this wonderful software, Vincent

state of SMIL? + SVG animation workaround suggestion

I have been trying to learn more about SMIL recently. The concept sounds great but I am very concerned about the progress of this technology. Some of the SMIL links on the W3C site are dead and many of them are from the late 90'S. Is SMIL just about dead? On a more positive note, I had an idea that I hope will be helpful. Regardless of what technology we use to generate an animated SVG, the animation is unlikely to be available to the masses with IE sucking as it does. I really am not qualified to offer tips to anyone here but on the off chance that no one has thought of it, perhaps we could generate an SVG animation locally, use a screencasting application and then save it as whatever-common-video-format. With a browser identification we could then load the animated SVG to the browser that supports it and the whatever-common-video-format to the others. -Patrick

Unfortunately, I cannot build skencil anymore after switching to Tcl/Tk-8.5.3 Does Inkscape (SVN) really need skencil for anything (like export to postscript)? alt key on OS X

trouble selecting text

Hello, I'm a new inkscape user, and I've run into some trouble selecting existing text in a document. At first clicking on the text seemed to do the trick, but now the program seems to interpret my click as me wanting to input a new separate line of text. I can't find any mention of this problem in the manual or tutorials. Any advice? Julie

Minimum Hardware requirements to make inkscape useful.

Here's my system. Windows XP Celeron 2.40 GHz 640 MB of RAM I'm running inkscape and it seems to render smoothly until I get in the neighborhood of 300 nodes. Then things start grinding to a halt. I'm looking at upgrading my system which is now 5 years old. Any suggestions on what configuration I would need to make using inkscape enjoyable? It would be really great if I could handle 1000+ nodes without too much hassle. Any tips to increase render speed, ie working in outline mode, locking layers, using clones, keeping groups of nodes small, etc. Thanks! -- I'm not a communist. I can have a potato chip. --Ben Stein

Request: A Proper Layer/Object Tree

Hey all, Is anyone working on something like this, or has it been considered before... Adding a visual tree control to Inkscape which displays the following: your layers, groups, and vector shapes ... with names, thumbnails, blending, and toggles object/group/layer locked/visible states, as well as drag groups (1,2,3,4,none ect). This tree control would also have a setting to define the thumbnail size, and would allow for two way object selecting (i.e. select the obejcts in the tree, and they are selected in the drawing/select them in the drawing and they show as bold selected in the tree). A mock up is here: http://imagebot.org/snapshots/CF9400B2FB51AFBA269FF9F7FA373CBC.jpg This would be useful in finding hidden/locked objects, or objects which are obscured below fully opaque objects, and also allow you to drag the object in to treee to relayer/regroup objects. I know Inkscape has an xml editor, but this idea is so much than that that. What do you guys think?

need help installing software for reading .ps files

I need to open a .ps file. I've installed pstoedit onto my computer. I see from the readme file that I also need to install ghostscript, but each time I try to do this a pop-up window appears telling me I need to install it using win-zip and that this will cost me money. I'm confused. Is ghostscript not open source as well, or am I just clicking on the wrong download? Thanks.

Fix for latency warnings

For those seeing the recent event latency warnings, I've just put in a fix ** (inkscape:27965): WARNING **: Event latency reached 3.290566 sec The main cause of extraneous warnings is a slight difference between the clock used for the GDK event marking and the real time. On my Mac, I observed that the skew was of a constant factor, so I added in an option to compensate for that. On my system the value was 0.9766 (and thus on my system after running for 85 seconds Inkscape would believe a latency of over 2 seconds had crept in). We'll probably need to investigate this a bit more, but getting that factor in should let people with false warnings get things calibrated and see only good ones. If you need it, look for the new setting under the misc pane.

John, Installing on Slackware 12.1 worked ok for me. I needed to install the GC garbage collector from here: http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Hans_Boehm/gc/gc_source/gc.tar.gz Then I ran the Inkscape configure script: ./configure without any additional options. Then make, and make install. I did that after installing Gnumeric which needed 2 preliminary items installing. goffice-0.6.4.tar.bz2 intltool-0.40.0.tar.bz2 gnumeric-1.8.3.tar.bz2 - install with ./configure, no additional options. I wonder if these Gnumeric things supplied anything needed by Inkscape? I'm not sure. Inkscape and Gnumeric are essentials that I really miss now Slackware has dropped Gnome - fortunately it wasn't too difficult to install them. HSL colour picker

Hi, I noticed Inkscape has a HSL colour picker, which is great. INkscape on windows XP

I know I can put up a Debian or derivative partition (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Mbotu etc.) and get to Inkscape 46 fairly painlessly. I also have already an unused Win XP partition. My question is, does Inkscape 46 download painlessly to Win XP or is it one of those kludges where you have to download this to compile that to support something else? I am looking for the easiest path to a fully functioning IS 46. PDF won't open

Howdy, I just did bzr branch lp:inkscape configure, make and install seem fine. The resulting Inkscape doesn't list .pdf in open dialog, errors if I try to open one. What am I missing? Thanks, Kent

SVG web programming OT?

I hope I am not too far off topic here...... There are quite a few resources out these concerning programming SVG graphics but I have not found much of anything concerning SVG web programming. What I mean to say is, how do I take an SVG document and add hyperlinks, css, javascript, etc , to make that document a rich full fledged web site?-Patrick
