Linking objects to a path for quick and easy bending around

Is there some way that I can link objects to a path so that I can change the path and have the objects follow it? I've made an SVG to demonstrate what I mean (in this example, I had to move the objects manually to match the path. Replacing all stamped copies of an object

Say I have an object (a circle for example) that I have stamped a whole bunch of times by draging and clicking the spacebar. Is there an easy way to replace each of them with a different object stamp? Sort of an object search and replace? -Rob A.

[NEW] blend modes moved to layers

Because SVG has problems dealing with blends on non-top-level children (in our case, that generally means non-layers), I've moved blend modes selection to the layers dialog and made it per-layer rather than per-object. If you have existing artwork with blend modes on individual objects, or want to create new artwork with blend modes on individual objects, that can still be done from the SVG filters dialog. -mental

using inkscape to convert svg to jpeg - from a plugin

Hi, If you might have noticed, I posted a message about the plugin/extension I wrote to upload images to Flickr/Picasaweb. An important part of this plugin is to convert SVG to JPEG, because both of the above services don't accept SVG images. So the solution I am using in the current version of plugin is, using ImageMagick's "convert" command to do the above image format transformation. This is not an elegant approach, in my opinion. I can't get it to work on windows, etc. I know Inkscape can let you save an SVG image as jpeg. But don't know how to do this programmatically. My extension works as an "output" extension, so it is triggered by the filename extension (.web). This mechanism pretty much isolates the extension developer from having programmatic interface with inkscape functionality. So I am not sure how I can access inkscape's svg-2-jpeg functionality, if at all there is an API exposing it. It is also a possibility to fork another inkscape instance as command line and use --export-png to convert to PNG (I think flickr/picasa will accept png). But the conversion result was very poor when I tried it. When the SVG image contained some simple black lines on a white background, the resultant PNG contained only black lines and no background. Any suggestions around these ideas will help. Thanks in advance. Cheers! Jayesh

Hi all, As some have already noticed, we have a new website for posting usage questions about Inkscape: http://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/ This is different from the bug tracker - it's for when you have questions about how to do something in Inkscape. It's nice, in that it allows keeping track of if your question has been "Solved" or not. Developers can then easily and quickly peek in for any still open questions. If it turns out your question is really a bug or feature request, it can be easily bumped over into the bug tracker appropriately. I notice that a huge amount of the traffic here on inkscape-user@ has been usage questions; I hope Answers will give a more powerful and reliable way to gain an answer to your Inkscape usage questions, and allow the inkscape-user@ list to focus on more artistic and technique discussions. :-) Bryce

Handling objects in stacks

i have been attempting to 'unstack' items returned from potrace. since i often have many groups stacked as a result of multiple scan passes, it can get difficult to manage them. Development packages for OS X (About screen contest)

Hi everyone, Thanks to the help of several people, there are now recent development builds of Inkscape for PowerPC (G4-G5), as well as prebuilt python modules for all machines (ppc and intel) and all python versions currently available on OS X (2.3 - 2.5). These new builds are available on modevia as usual: http://inkscape.modevia.com/macosx-snap/?C=M;O=D Python packages are integrated into the application so drag Inkscape and drop it somewhere on your machine (e.g. in Applications) and everything should "just work". There are two PPC packages (dec24 and 16774) which should work on Tiger and Leopard and one i386 (Intel) package (16834) which, unfortunately, is Leopard-only. PDF export stroke bug?

Hello everyone, and happy Xmas! I noticed a small thing, dunno if it's a bug or not. Attached you will find: - svgsource.svg This is the svg source of this test - ink_0_44_1.pdf SVG file exported with Inkscape 0.44.1 (Sep 9 2006) - ink_0_45_devel.pdf SVG file exported with Inkscape 0.45+devel (Dec 8 2007) All the exports are made in commandline, using the following command: inkscape -z svgsource.svg --export-pdf=xxx.pdf --export-text-to-path While stroke in ink_0_44_1.pdf seems correct, there are broken points in ink_0_45_devel.pdf (for example, look the top-left corner of the "B" letter). Any thought about this? It works with a past version, what may cause this in the SVN i'm using? Thanks in advance, Alex

shared whiteboard mode

I am new to inkscape, and don't use chat much, but am very experianced with Linux overall (I've been useing linux as my desktop for over 10 years now), but I am having problems figuring out how to get the shared whiteboard to work. I got as far as getting a ejabberd server running on my laptop, and I could get two instances of inkscape to see each other enough to be able to do a chat, but I can't get something I draw on one page to show up on another. looking for info on this type of problem on the inkscape website is frustrating, there are refrences to inkboard, and then after I dig further I see that it's been integrated into inkscape for a couple of years now, but I can't find any mention of it in any documentation or tutorial. any suggestions? Assign URL to object?

Hi all, recently, I started using embedded SVGs on my web site. Now I would like to make certain objects (say, a circle) clickable by assigning URLs to them. Does Inkscape/SVG support this, and in case that it does, how is this done? I'm assuming, if at all, it would have to be by using the XML editor. Bucket Fill

I couldn't figure out why bucket fill didn't seem to work lately - I finally realised, the grow/shrink comes up as 100000 by default so it *does* work but the result is nothing like what is expected. Shouldn't the default for the grow/shrink be 0? My Scalable Vector Graphics Don't Scale

Hi Folks, This is probably a newbie kind of a question but I couldn't find the answer in the docs or FAQ after 30 minutes or so of looking. When I create an drawing and save it as .svg the image doesn't scale when I open it in Mozilla Firefox or embed it in HTML. Examples: The following image is in SVG format and scales when the browser is resized (I don't know what was used to create this SVG): http://www.carto.net/papers/svg/samples/canvas_norelief.svg The following image was created in Inkscape and doesn't scale: http://frankgilroy.com/uploaded_images/bootstrapgirl.svg Is there a simple setting that will update the XML in the SVG file to allow for this scaling? Hi, wieing at the source code, the not scaling svg has defined width and height. instead the one witch is scalling right don´t. have you tried to remove this properties? Frank, it is an issue with the image viewer, not with the XML file itself. I use Opera - and it scales correctly in this browser. Another example is Gnome's default image viewer (in Fedora, I forgot its name). It doesn't scale the SVG, instead it stretches it (with interpolation) as if it were a raster image; at least this is what happens on my computer. Alex Railean

Interesting. I'm assuming you're on a Mac. Safari on Windows doesn't scale my Inkscape created image either. And when I embed the images in HTML they don't scale in any browser I tried. I haven't tried it on my Mac yet, I'm on a work PC at the moment. Regardless it seems the images should scale when embedded in HTML. Does anyone know the XML tag that controls this? I noticed in the Map image referred to below that the dimensions of the image are specified but when I tried to manually remove them from the Inkspace generated XML it didn't help. I've never seen graphics rescale when I change my page size. Opposite to what was originally asked, how would one force objects to scale with the page when the page size is changed? I see mention of a viewBox attribute. Is that something that is only available through manual editing of the XML, or does Inkscape have this feature per object? If Inkscape isn't capable of doing this (yet), could it be a useful feature? - Tony

match properties

Was thinking. In AutoCAD we have this feature called "Match Properties". Basically, if you have two different objects with different properties, say color, layer, or linetype, one can select the source object (the one with the properties that you want) and apply it's properties to the target object. Is there anything in Inkscape that is similar? heathenx

To bring some water to the mill, I had a "squashed" image problem importing in Scribus (those also on that list saw it). The image I drew is based on a vectorisation of a picture through VectorMagic, the vectoriser of Stanford University, which did add the viewbox attribute to all files I created through there. It is possibly also the case of files created in AI ! viewBox="0 0 132 175" A small Inkscape file does not create such an attribute. But is there indeed a place in the Inkscape GUI where it is visible? Cédric

About PDF Import and a font name problem.

Hello, I have to import PDF files on a daily basis from PDF drivers such as Adobe PDF printer driver or PrimoPDF and when importing one thing I have recently learned as I am starting to work with inkscape is that the Font names seem to not get imported properly and perhaps this is a known bug. If the font used to print to the Driver is for example Times New Roman, when it is imported to SVG in inkscape it is converted to the name TimesNewRoman and the missing spaces are the main problem in the font name. If I use a text editor and do a search and replace on TimesNewRoman and replace it with Times New Roman then the font is used properly. I would hope this can be easily corrected. I have another question and I don't know if there is somewhere you can already do this. It would be nice if the X= value could be limited to just a single X coordinate rather than a list in my type of work so that the text string is a single string in positioning. Example: x="-3.296843 1.747382 2.3432245" could just be x="-3.296843". Is that a possibility? Vacuum defs minor problem

I'm not sure if this is only my problem or not, but vacuuming defs only seems to work when the file is freshly opened/reverted. If I make changes to a file that causes new defs to be created, then delete something else that no longer needs some defs and do a vacuum defs, it does not. If I save the file and then do a vacuum defs, it still does not. Only if I reopen and then vacuum or save then revert then vacuum does it seem to work. It's not too big of a deal, but the file size is reduced a little when the unused defs are no longer there, and I normally do this before saving without thinking about saving, reverting, vacuuming, and then saving again. I'm on XP SP2, and this seems to be the case with 0.45 and a development snapshot I've recently downloaded. Brian Vanderburg II

More control over gradients

First of all thanks for such a great product. I know that full control can be achieved by directly editing the file, but I don't know how much Inkscape might still change. After looking though the files produced by Inkscape, I know that for each item that uses a gradient, a special 'dummy' gradient is created that uses the 'real' gradient. This makes it where each item can have it's own transforms for the gradient. But, what if I want two items to use the same transforms, the same 'dummy' gradient. I could use a clone, but what if I have an ellipse and a rectangle, but both I want to use the same gradient. Here is how it currently works: linearGradient1234 (real gradient with real stops) | |- linearGradient2345 (dummy gradient uses 1234) | | | |- rectangle (using dummy gradient 2345) | |- linearGradient7890 (dummy gradient uses 1234) | |- ellipse (using dummy gradient 7890) What I want to be able to do is this: linearGradient1234 (real gradient with real stops) | |- linearGradient2345 (dummy gradient uses 1234) | |- rectangle (using dummy gradient 2345) |- ellipse (using dummy gradient 2345) So that any transforms I apply to the gradient used by the rectangle will also affect the ellipse. Perhaps something that would be nice would be a 'graph' editor for gradients (and for other things maybe as well) that would show the 'real' gradient, and any 'dummy' child gradients connected, grandchild gradients,etc, or something where you can define the actual relationship however you want. Then, when assigning a gradient you can select from not a gradient list only showing the 'real' but a tree, where the items in the root of the tree are the top gradients and sub-items are child gradients that use the top gradients or their parent gradients (support for any level of nested gradients, grandchild gradients, etc) When editing a gradient for an item, the ability to 'pick' which gradient is being edited would be nice as well. For example. If my document is like this: linearGradient1234 (real gradient with real stops) | |- linearGradient2345 (dummy gradient uses 1234) | |- rectangle (using dummy gradient 2345) | |- linearGradient7890 (dummy gradient uses 2345 which uses 1234) |- ellipse (using dummy gradient 7890) When editing the gradient of the ellipse, I can choose to edit gradient 7890 which would only affect the ellipse, or I can edit 2345, which would affect both the ellipse and the rectangle, or I can edit the stops of 1234, which would affect both. This would also make it easy to have a master transformation in 2345 that affects both and a fine-tuned transformation in 7890 just for the ellipse. resizing page without resizing drawing?

Hi all, I've been using Inkscape (version 0.45 under Ubuntu) for a couple of months mostly to make technical drawings and diagrams for use on Wikipedia. I love it, but there's just one thing that's driving me nuts! There's no way to resize the page without resizing all the objects in it. For example, I may have an object that's exactly 36×24 mm on an 8×10" page. If I change the page size to A4, all the objects change their size. The only way to restore it is to calculate the *exact* scale factor and then rescale them afterwards... and even then there are sometimes some rounding errors :-( So is there a way to resize the page without scaling the objects within? Hello everyone! strange to say, i need your help once more. As usual by me, it's a bit complicated... It may seem a bug, but i also think it may be me, so here's the explanation. NOTES: i'm using Inkscape 0.45+devel (Dec 8 2007) All of this is done via PHP, no human action. Here i am reporting values dumped from the PHP script itself The issue: Plz cosider this simple code: <svg width="2160in" height="2160in" viewBox="0 0 2160 2160" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xml:space="preserve" shape-rendering="geometricPrecision" text-rendering="geometricPrecision" image-rendering="optimizeQuality" fill-rule="evenodd" clip-rule="evenodd" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <g id="text_4" transform="translate(1080,1080)"> <text id="text_4_1" transform="translate(0,0)" style=" text-anchor:start; font-size: 90; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; fill: #000000; fill-opacity: 1; stroke: none;">SCHOOL BOARD</text> </g> </svg> It's simply a textline inside a big canvas. What i need to do is to export in PDF only the text_4 object. I need it perfectly trimmed, so that the PDF will be exactly sized over it. As the export-id option seems to work only for PNG export, i tried to do this: - use query-width and query-height to find "text_4 object" size - create a new SVG using the resulted values as width and height - finally export the new SVG in PDF The results of the queries on the avobe file are: inkscape -z svgfile.svg --query-width --query-id text_4 => 66073.068 inkscape -z svgfile.svg --query-height --query-id text_4 => 8594.1 NOTE: I queried text_4 and not text_4_1 because sometimes i will have multiline texts here, and so other text_4_2, text_4_3, etc... inside text_4. text_4 is the container, i need all the "text_4_xxx" in the same PDF. Anyhow, for this specific case, i also tested the query on ID text_4_1: as expected, same result. Values are "SVG user units", which are 90 DPI. So next i divided the values by 90: 66073.068/90=734.1452 8594.1/90=95.49 And finally i create the "last" SVG file: <svg width="734.1452in" height="95.49in" viewBox="0 0 734.1452 95.49" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xml:space="preserve" shape-rendering="geometricPrecision" text-rendering="geometricPrecision" image-rendering="optimizeQuality" fill-rule="evenodd" clip-rule="evenodd" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <rect x="0" y="0" width="734.1452" height="95.49" style="fill: none;" /> <g transform="translate(0,95.49)"> <text id="text_4_1" transform="translate(0,0)" style=" text-anchor:start; font-size: 90; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; fill: #000000; fill-opacity: 1; stroke: none;">SCHOOL BOARD</text> </g> </svg> As you can see, it's the same identical "text_4_1" line, there's nothing there to alter it. lxml + numpy (on OS X PPC but not only)

Hi everyone, In order to provide out of the box python functionality on OS X for the upcoming 0.46 release, we'll bundle the python packages Inkscape uses in all flavors (i.e. ppc and intel, for every version of python). I would need someone who has these packages installed to send them to me: - lxml and numpy ppc with python 2.4.* - lxml and numpy ppc with python 2.5.* These two versions of python are *not* the one shipped with Mac OS X Panther or Tiger. They are typically obtained via MacPorts, Fink or the binary distribution of Python for Mac. MacPorts versions are in / opt/local/Framework/Python/.../lib/site-packages. Versions for the binary distribution of python are probably somewhere in /usr/local or in /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/2.4/. I am looking for two directories in site-packages, unsurprisingly named lxml and numpy. If no-one has them already it would be really nice if someone could compile them for me on a PPC machine. This is really simple: - download lxml and numpy (from their respective homes, google is your friend ;)) - decompress them (usually already done for you) - in terminal sudo python setup.py install - go fetch the directories where they where installed (check the latest terminal messages), zip them and contact me. Thanks in advance. PS for the more knowledgeable around here: I am acting under the assumption that packages such as lxml and numpy are incompatible between point versions of Python (2.3 vs 2.4 vs 2.5), which is what I read somewhere. If someone has indication that this is not true, it would be very nice to point my mistake: things would be simpler and Inkscape won't grow too fat if we can just ship one version of the packages (the sum of all pyton packages will probably be around 70Mb, compared to the 80Mb of Inkscape itself, it seems a bit overkill...). Best Practices for making maps

Hello all, At the suggestion of a friend, I have downloaded and installed Inkscape on my home PC running Ubuntu. What I would like to use this program to do is to create maps. The maps in question would be maps of a fantasy world (like what you would find on the inside cover of a copy of The Hobbit). Inkscape looks like it would be able to pull this off fairly well, but I wanted to run the idea by the list to see if anyone had done this before. If so, do you have any suggestions on how to make the experience easier? I figure I can't be the first person to do this, so... Also, how hard is it to make an object that is reusable? For instance, if I made a really cool graphic that represented a castle, how could I easily reuse it in multiple maps? Different style when printing using filter effects

Hi! Im wondering, if is it possible, what many CAD application has, namely when I print the drawing, it applies different style and not the normal one. Im thinking like: When viewing vs. when printing(exporting as pdf) black ->black red -> black yellow -> dotted line green -> dot line dot line etc Maybe a button or a menu item to apply the alternate style (before exporting as pdf) and after it, to remove. Or similar to the viewing possibilities (this one would be the best solution so far, but require programming skills): -Normal -Outline -Simplified/Technical/Black&White I think it would be useful for the drawing community too, for ex. somebody need to design a logo in color and grayscale (or when printing in black and white). As a short term solution I think Filter effects is the easiest solution (no programming required). Can somebody help if is it possible or where can I start? Equation Graphing (like geg) in Inkscape?

People, I would like to able to produce graphs from equations like geg (Graphical Equation Grapher - uses gtk): http://www.infolaunch.com/~daveb/ A found a suggestion that this is possible in inkscape: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/TufteStylePresentation but I can't find any more info about how to do this - can someone give me some info? Ideally it would be great for Inkscape to be able to read a script with the list of equations (using some acceptable syntax) and plot them along with axes, grids, area selection, zoom etc. geg has limitations wrt displaying grids, exporting to PDF etc. It seems that this would be useful addition to Inkscape? Using textures

Ok, I tried creating some textures to fill in various items in an inkscape drawing that I'm using to test. I created the textures in GIMP and saved them as PNGs. Performance has been abyssmal, even with small numbers of polygons. Is there a different way I'm supposed to be doing this? Will --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. No, I did not mean to reply to you directly. My apologies. I understand the point that you have made. I have been burned by forgetting to embed images in the past. That's mostly my fault for forgetting (just like forgetting to make my text a path before giving my svg to others). However, if I had an "up-front" feature somewhere that would help me remember then maybe other users would find it handy too. I'm no developer nor a bigwig in the community so I wouldn't expect anything that I suggest to go very far. Thank goodness for that. :) heathenx

tracing lines from a bitmap

I want to trace a map from a bitmap, and using the built in tracing tools I get a reasonable trace. But I was wondering if there isn't a way to trace bitmap lines not as a path shaped as the outline of the bitmap lines, but as a single path going through the center of those bitmap lines. In other words, some kind of line recognition. I tried the edge detection, but that gives you two lines - not really what is required. Thanks for any help.

Your options are limited to either emf/wmf or eps, but I've found that eps produces the best results.... well, at least for _my_ documents that is. Icons do not show up

I installed the development version of inkscape from http://inkscape.modevia.com/ap/?M=D The version that I downloaded and installed is inkscape200711070317.package When I try to run the program, the inkscape window does not contain any icons :-( I am attaching a screenshot of the same. It also prints to the console messages to the effect that it cannot draw the icons. I am also attaching the log of that. Can this be fixed locally or do I have to wait till the next version is released. From the same site, inkscape200710270316.package works well. CAPS lock problem

I am using the development version of inkscape (inkscape200710270316.package). After I choose to enter text, if I press the Caps lock key, it does not light up. But, the characters come out in uppercase. Any pointers to this problem would be helpful. Hello everybody, I created some artwork a while back ago, and needed to create a new version of it. So I opened the *.svg documents but the text is wrong. All text is is put on the same character.
