Easy way to push attributes up?

Is there any easy way to push attributes up the heirarchy? Say I have 20 objects in a group that all are drawn with the same stroke-fill-etc, and I would like the group to now have those attributes (so the underlings all inheret them instead of have them explicitly). Is there any way to ask inkscape to push these common attributes up the ladder? Also, one big deal with GTK+ used to be the ability to key bind anything in an appliction. Hello, fresh thread. I installed numpy from source (*) and put a link to it into the inkscape extensions folder. Perspective 0.45 and numpy

Hi, wondering how to get 'numpy' installed on my Kubuntu Dapper system so I can muck about with perspective tool. I installed 'python-numeric' via apt-get but that puts 'Numeric' into the system-wide Python directory, not the Inkscape one. I have not had much luck with making links from /usr/local/share/inkscape/extensions to /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/Numeric either. I also remarked: self.q['y'] = docheight - self.q['y'] - self.q['height'] in summersnight.py as per Tav's suggestion. Font size: Pixels vs. Points

I've written a simplistic Python script [1] that will change all of the font-size units in an SVG file from pixels to points. The script doesn't actually do a conversion it simply replaces the unit suffix of px with pt. If you create some text in Inkscape with size 10 and save it; font-size:10px Run the script on the file; font-size:10pt Open and edit the file in Inkscape; font-size:12.5px This is a workaround for the bug that the UI never shows the units (pixels) associated with font size numbers and it is difficult to specify sizes in units other than pixels [2]. This is the quickest hack I could put together when I realized that the text in all of the figures for my thesis was the wrong size, therefore it hasn't been tested much, so if anybody uses it you should take appropriate precautions (e.g. backup your data). Clearly this is an ugly hack, but if there is no interest in fixing the underlying issue, or it's to painful, I could put together something similar as an effect. It seems like a better solution would be to, at a minimum show, what unit font size is in. When setting the default font size in the toolbar specifying a unit results in the correct conversion, so maybe a more general fix wouldn't be to hard. Unfortunately, trying to specify a unit when changing the size of existing text or doing anything with a unit in the text dialog doesn't work. Hi all, I just downloaded the latest packages for GIMP on Windows. GIMP and GTK have two separate installers and GTK installs itself in the Common Files directory. Cannot Email Inkscape created PDFs as attachements

Hello. I have successfully created PDFs of my Inscape projects and they look/work perfectly on my PC, however when I try to email them as attachements to someone else the recipient just sees a plain text batch file and code. Does anyone know what is happening to the PDF by being emailed? Bulia, It just occurred to me that I've mixed up some terminology. When I've said "filter", I really meant "effect". Can an effect be created that would randomize rotation, size or transparency of selected objects based on the pixel color of a bitmap below each object's origin? - Tony

V0.45, exporting PDF => result without images

Hi, seems like the never ending story. After spending about a day for the drawing, I finally found out, that I can't get it to the print service just like that, because all images are not included within the created pdf. I looked up the mailing lists, googled like hell, read wikis, tried the hand made "effects-extensions" via ghostscript, used the command line option "--export-pdf". Same result: no images in the pdf. Great program, but if I only can see the result on the screen, the whole thing is questionable. However, maybe I've just missed *the* hint, that will do the job. So, the way for best results would be File => Save As... => PDF? I just need any way, to get that thing out as it looks on the screen! Any help appreciated. Cheers, Holger

Selector's scale handle modifiers

Currently, when you scale an object by its scale handles in Selector, you can use the following modifiers: Ctrl+mouse drag scale preserving aspect ratio Shift+mouse drag symmetric transformation (around center) Alt+mouse drag slow movement The "slow movement" mode with Alt simply scales the object by 1/10 of your mouse movement, the goal being increased precision. This mode is inherited unchanged all the way from Sodipodi. In my opinion, however, it is weird, counterintuitive and not at all useful. It also has no analogs in other tools. So my question is, will anyone complain if I remove the "slow movement" mode? On the other hand, one useful thing that's missing is the ability to scale the object to 2, 3, 4 and 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 etc of its current size. (This is possible from keyboard by Ctrl+> and Ctrl+< but not by mouse). So I'm thinking about enabling the Alt modifier to do this "quantized scaling". Among other things, this would enable the often needed transformation: flipping an object around one of its bbox edges (by Ctrl+Alt+dragging a side handle). Thoughts? -- bulia byak Inkscape. Howdy! I've just discovered the stamp tool. One thing that is missing... randomization of the object's attributes. It would be nice if this tool allowed for randomization, kind of like the Tiled Clones tool. Until something like that comes to be, is this something that could be cooked up as a filter? Could a filter be created that randomly rotates each individual object in a selection within a given range of values? How about this... could a filter be created that sets the rotation of the individual objects in a selection based on the brightness of an image's pixel value underneath the object's centerpoint? How to copy these features from Adobe Illustrator

They provide instructions on how to properly create an SVG file for their app, but specify the following: "Make sure the Font Subsetting is set to "None (Use System Fonts)", Encoding is set to "ISO 8859-1 (ASCII)" and CSS Property Location is set to "Style Attributes."" I can't seem to find any comparable settings in Inkscape. How can I know if I'm "compatible"? Also, they talk about a "layer palette": "...layers palette allows you to see all grouping levels on your map. This will allow you to make sure all objects are properly grouped before exporting. [...] all dynamic objects must be grouped with a text while all static objects must remain ungrouped." I couldn't find similar functionality in Inkscape to view the layers (or at least I don't think so). Marco

Dropper not working

For some reason, since I upgraded to the second Beta of 0.45 the dropper tool hasn't worked. I'm running the final version 0.45 and the issue is still present. With both "Pick Alpha" and "Set Alpha" set it always picks the RGBA value, 00000000. With "Pick Alpha" disabled I get ffffff. Selecting an average stroke colour works. It's only when attempting to pick a single pixel does it not work. For some reason, if I search long enough, I can find stray pixels that can be sampled. Not often can I get their true colour though. I can sample colours from bitmaps I use in the drawings. Tablet - Panning doesn't work with Pen

I have a button on my Wacom Intuos3 tablet assigned to "middle click" with the intention of using it when I need to pan the canvas. When I hold the button and move the pen, nothing happens. If I hold it and move the mouse the panning works fine. Is there something I can do to fix this? Hi! Is there a way to select a node as a snap "target"? What I want to do: I have an irregular (so non rectangular) shaped object, which has points which should snap to the grid, when I move the group (so I can easily lay another object of another shape but same kind next to it and the points meet). These points are not on one of the center-lines and are also not the edges. Is there a way to do this? unable to export bitmaps

I'm not sure if this is a bug or if I'm plain too dumb to check the right prefs: I'm unable to export bitmaps. Here is what I am trying to do. It's actually quite simple — and that's what drives me nuts: I am creating a banner. It has • a background foto • a logo with a blurred drop shadow • a slogan All three parts give me trouble — it's maddening! 1. the slogan: I had to create it in a different program and import into Inkscape because the required font doesn't appear in the font menu (see: [Inkscape-user] fonts on OS X). 2. the drop shadow of the logo doesn't appear blurred anymore after exporting to (Cairo-) PDF. 3. as a work-around for 2. I tried to a) export to PNG instead and b) create a PNG solely from the drop shadow to use instead of the blurred vector logo. Neither the bitmap background nor the blurred shape appear in the output. Making a Bitmap Copy (Alt-B) somewhat worked, but delivered a result which was cropped with the dimensions of the un-blurred shape — bummer! Anyway, I've already spend hours on something that would take me only minutes in Illustrator — if that stupid piece of software only didn't think it had to increase file size and memory usage proportionally to the dimensions of the artwork (the banner is 70cm x 210cm)! How frustrating. Sometimes I think they invented the computer (and the wheel for that matter) only to make our lives more complicated. Well, maybe I'm just too dumb to hit the right switch after all… Somebody throw me a line! Cheers, Sebastian

fonts on OS X

I've mentioned this once before on this list: There is some issue with certain fonts (or variants) not being available in Inkscape on OS X. I think it might be an issue with Apple's dfont format but I'm not sure. Is anybody else seeing this? Anyway, it can render a program quite useless if you happen to not be able to use a requred font… -Sebastian

0.45 crash on OS X 10.4

After upgrading to 0.45 Inkscape always crashed on launch. EPS Transparency support

Hi, I've been encountering the problems caused by eps's lack of tranparency support quite a lot lately. The problem (and some work arounds) are described here: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=38244491 The best option appears to be outputing a pdf and using acroread to convert it to an eps, this then "flattens" the tranparencies, while keeping them in vector format. I was wondering if anyone else had a better (and open source) solution to this problem? If I wanted to investigate adding support for transparency flattening to inkscape where would I start? Does inkscape export to eps natively or is an external tool used? Many Thanks, nw --

Hiding/showing layers via command line?

Hi, Is there any way to hide and show layers in a Inkscape document with command line arguments before saving? I have an image that has buttons for a webpage, and on different layers there are the normal, selected and rollover versions of the buttons. I have a nice script to automatically output the buttons with command line options, but right now I have to go into the GUI, select the different layers, and run my script. It's not that much work, but I thought it would be neato if I could do all this from the command line. thank you, sness.

I had been very busy and I forgot to say that in the OLD number 19 of Spanish version of Linux Magazine I wrote about Inkscape 0.44. I wrote about the new (on inkscape 0.44) features and some inkscape's examples logotypes made by me and Included an Illustration from Andy Fitzimon at the header of the first page (He gave me permission). how to including a form in a clone set

How can i link a form to a clone set? If I want to unlink somethink I just go ctrl+alt+D (windows XP) Can go back from there relinking it? - how can i include a new form in the clone set? (I know i did once but I don't know how did I get there) basically I was modifying a set of clones through the main form, suddenly i decide to make a star on top of the clone master and the star was in all the clones as well and whatever i drew I could get the same in all clones. unfortunately I lost that file and I do not know how I did activate such a function. thanks kirk --------------------------------- L'email della prossima generazione? Un-uninstallation?

Inkscape by default saves stuff in the /inkscape dir. When I installed .45 it obliterated (I assumed it would leave whatever files were there) all of my work in the Inkscape Dir when it unistalled .44!! Is there -any- way to undo this? I may have to go into a period of grieving, here. (Lost about 15-20 fairly complex svgs and pngs.) Penrose tiling with different-coloured strokes

NEW: smoother panning and scrolling

Several improvements make canvas panning and scrolling smoother and more interactive in complex slow-rendering documents: * When panning by the middle mouse button, Inkscape no longer attempts to redraw the canvas while your mouse button is pressed. Any redrawing only happens after you release the mouse. As a result, the newly revealed parts of the canvas are somewhat more "dirty" but the panning is smoother than before, with few if any "hiccups". * Previously, if you start panning with middle button while Inkscape is still redrawing screen in a complex drawing, panning sometimes completely failed or moved canvas just a little step. Now it is guaranteed to pan the canvas all the way from mouse-press point to mouse-release point in any case, even if sometimes it fails to show the intermediate positions. * When pressing and holding Ctrl+arrows to scroll canvas, Inkscape normally accelerates scrolling so that each next scrolling step is bigger than the previous. Previously, in complex drawings this acceleration sometimes got interrupted, which made scrolling annoyingly bumpy and slow. Now this is fixed so that scrolling is smoothly accelerated even in a slow-rendering document. * The default starting speed and acceleration of Ctrl+arrows scrolling are slightly increased. Hi I bought a Wacom Graphire 4 classic tablet and I can use it directly on inkscape, as expected, as a normal mouse/pointer. I noticed Inkscape has an 'Input Devices' entry on the File menu, but it says there aren't special input devices available. Is this usual? Cheers Alberto -- Alberto Simões

Scripting the fill style

Hi, Not sure if I should be bothering this list with this, but it may also be functionality currently missing from Inkscape (?) I'm using Inkscape to create interactive SVG drawings that allow the viewer colour in the picture, painting by numbers style (I've attached a simple test svg as an example). The (minor) problems encountered so far are: 1 - Inkscape uses the style attribute on each element to set the fill colour, and I have to manually go through each element changing them for my script code to work. Manipulating the style attribute in code would require parsing to preservation all the other style definitions. Is there any way to force inkscape to save style attributes of drawing elements as separate elements (as I have altered in the attached example)? 2 - should Inkscape treat script element as CDATA, as it currently treats it as a text node and replaces " with " etc.

Beginner's question regarding default_mm template/absolute svg sizes

Hi, sorry if this is FAQ, but I have searched Google and the archive and did not find a suitable answer. I have a small problem. I need to prepare some SVG files for the use with Apache's FOP. Inkscape seems to be the perfect tool for this, so I installed the latest version 0.45. However, I discovered that FOP measures a pixel as a 1/72 inch, while Inkscape measures a pixel as a 1/90 inch. Then I found out that there are default templates of various sizes, and one of them is "default_mm", which actually announces the image size in the <svg> element in absolute units. Unfortunately, whenever I resize the document size, Inkscape falls back into pixel mode when saving the file. What am I doing wrong? Is it an intended behaviour or is it a bug? I found a workaround, namely scaling the image by 72/90, however, I would prefer a clean solution. Thanks in advance for any answer. Klaus

Seymour, Unfortunately a paragraph text one exported is not editable, as it is rasterized (it's then just a bunch of pixels as any other object). The best alternative would be exporting the graphics to PNG and then add the text in the Gimp. Starting on April the 11th and until the 3rd of May, the Galizan government[1], through the Multimedia Center of Galiza[2], will be offering 33-hour courses on graphic design with Inkscape, within a series themed around the creation of multimedia content with Free Software[3].
