Hi! Is it possible to select object by their color? I know this feature in Gimp. I have a diagram with 3 curves but the points are not connected and I just want to group them. CPU usage.

Is it me or the Fedora version of Inkscape 0.44 uses more CPU now than 0.43 did? It may have been the case with the other versions I've tried, but it certainly is quite noticeable since I installed the Fedora packaged version. Anyone else noticed this? By the way I'm on FC5 x86_64, and a friend of mine also noticed this on i386.

LaTeX formula rendering. Which pstoedit?

Thanks for the great release. I am particularly excited about Effects > Render > LaTeX formula However, it silently fails for me with the autopackage release on Ubuntu (Dapper Drake). The DVI file and PS files are correctly compiled in '/tmp'. They preview in evince, but are never inserted. If I try to import the resultant PS file, inkscape reports the following error. Failed to load the requested file /tmp/inkscape-latex.tmp.ps I presume there is a small inconsistency between the versions of pstoedit. I see the following version string. pstoedit: version 3.42 / DLL interface 108 (build Jan 19 2006 - release build) : Copyright (C) 1993 - 2005 Wolfgang Glunz What further steps can I take to track this down? no radial gradients!

noooo! i've just done a fresh subversion build of inkscape and radial gradients no longer work. i can choose radial gradients and change the colours, but it just colours the whole path in only one of the colours. i'm off to submit a bug report. john m.

Changing from portrait to landscape and back

I'm using 0.44 and whenever I change from landscape to portrait, my image on the page shrinks in size relative to the page. I have to keep scaling the image up. When I change from portrait to landscape, the image enlarges and I have to scale it down to fit within the page. Is there a switch somewhere that controls this behavior? Thanks, Wayne Mandriva 2006

Inkscape Announces 0.44 Release :: http://www.inkscape.org The Inkscape community today officially released the latest version of its vector graphic drawing software. Inkscape 0.44 adds many new features, is faster and more usable, better supports SVG, is translated into more languages (17 on last count), and adds a lot of polish and refinement. Major new features include Layers dialog, support for clipping and masking, improved PDF export with transparency, configurable keyboard shortcuts, innovative "node sculpting" capability in Node tool, and the Outline mode. Significant gains are achieved in performance, especially in screen rendering and Node tool. Noticeable user interface changes include docked color swatches, interactive style indicator in the statusbar, a redesigned preferences dialog, a text toolbar, and new icons. Our SVG compliance has also taken a step forward, with the added support for the <switch> tag and ICC color profiles for images. This release also includes hundreds of smaller features, usability enhancements and bug fixes. For several releases, a collection of extension effects was shipped with Inkscape, but the Effects menu to access them was turned off by default. New translations we need?

The translation team has made some amazing progress for 0.44! Many translations are now at >98%, which is great. So next is to ask what other translations would be worth increasing in level? I looked at the GNOME translation statistics to use as a guide. Here are the languages that GNOME has at 50% or greater: bg, ca, cs, de, en_CA, en_GB, es, fi, fr, nb, ne, nl, pl, pt, pt_BR, ru, sk, sr, sv, uk, vi, zh_CN, and zh_TW Of these, we have some at >80% already. The ones in Inkscape that are not at 80% are: bg, en_CA, en_GB, fi, nb, ne, nl, pl, pt, pr_BR, ru, sk, sr, sv, uk, vi Since pl, pt_BR, ru, sr, and uk are between 60-80%, they seem like they should not be hard to boost to at least 80%! en_CA and en_GB ought to be fairly easy too. If anyone knows a speaker of one of these languages that might be willing to volunteer to do Inkscape translation work for 0.45, please consider talking to them about this. It would be quite a victory if we could get these languages covered! Bryce

Masking problem

Hi, I try to use the possibility to mask objects. As I read, the normal way is to select the object to be masked, select a second object above, which will be the mask, then: Object > mask > set. I did this, but as result, the object below just disappears. Please see the demo at: http://www.hagoschaos.de/test/test.html What am I doing wrong? Thanks for the Mac Intel version. I sent you a monetary thank you through Sourceforge. It looks like it went through, but I would like confirmation that you can access it. Paypal didn't list it as going to Inkscape specifically unlike the Gimp project does when you send money to Gnome for Gimp. It does list me on the page of contributors to Inkscape under benhuot.

A 2.5-year-old laptop with a 1.3GHz Centrino and 1.25Gb RAM. Not cutting edge, but not too feeble. I haven't compiled very much under Linux on it, but I've compiled a lot of Windows code on it. Compiling Inkscape from scratch was way longer than I expected. I looked at the system meter a couple of times and the CPU was maxed. /George -- /George V. autopackage flaky

I installed .44pre4 by Autopackage on Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake under KDE with the latest security and stability including kernel updates. When I chose manage 3rd party applications and remove Inkscape like I did for .44pre3, my computer locked up on me and I had to do a hard reboot. After rebooting, I checked then and it no longer appeared in the list under 3rd party applications. Then I changed the .package file to make it executable and then double clicked on it. My screen locked up temporarily as it spent several minutes initializing. Then my dock disappeared. I saw it said it was installing various components and then it said it was done. My dock was still gone! Luckily I was able to log out by right clicking on the desktop. I logged back in, launched Inkscape and it seems to work fine. That is the last time I use Autopackage!!!

Objects on a path

Hello, Is there a way to place copies of an object along a path the same way that text can be put on a path (with orientation perpendicular to the path)? Would this require that an object first be converted to a font? I've tried the Tiled Clones tracing and see that the L-system effect in 0.44 can define paths from rules. Thanks!, John

Bezier curves and making smooth points

Hi, When I draw bezier curves, there are boxes (smooth points) and diamonds (angles). Sometimes I can't make a diamond into a smooth point (Shift+S) and othertimes I can. I can't find a pattern to it, Shift+S just refused to smooth some points. Am I doing something wrong? Cheers, Geoff Russell.

Besides Inkscape 0.43, the following programs were reviewed: Tribar Inform 1.0 (http://www.tribarsw.net), Zoner Zoner Draw 5 (http://zoner.com), Serif DrawPlus 8 (http://www.serif.com), Purgatory Intaglio 2.7 (http://www.purgatorydesign.com), Xara Xtreme 2.0f (http://www.xara.com), Microsoft Expression Grafic Designer CTP (formerly Acrylic) (http://www.microsoft.com) They say Expression is likely to cost more than 100 EUR once it's out of its preview phase, so it would not belong in that test anymore. In short, Inkscape got the following rating (from --, -, ., +, ++): Import and Export: - Exact Drawing/Freehand: ++/- Text design/Prepress: ./-- Efficient work/Documentation: +/-- Winners were DrawPlus and Xara, with Expression and Intaglio still better than Inkscape, the rest got lower ratings than Inkscape. The article text itself is IMO more friendly toward Inkscape than the rating says. White background of a formula into a transparent one

Dear All I have got a formula in SVG format, which I want to place over a colorful SVG figure. However, the formula has a white background and when I put it over the colorful figure, the white background is shown. Then, I thought that if I could transform the white background into a transparent one, the problem would be solved. Is that possible? How can I get a transparent background? Thanks in advance, Paul

inkview: linked image not found

Hi list, There is foo_dir directory with slide1.svg and mapa.jpg files. I insert mapa.jpg into slide1.svg. Now I copy foo_dir to another machine with win32. I drop slide1.svg on inkscape icon, fine - mapa.jpg is displayed in the slide I drop slide1.svg on inkview icon, I get a red cross: Linked image not found. This is the XML editor info for mapa.jpg inside slide1.svg: sodipodi:absref /home/users/mimooh/foo_dir/mapa.jpg xlink:href mapa.jpg I guess inkview doesn't respect xlink:href entry. Karol

building inkscape from subversion on ubuntu

hello all, i've just done a fresh install of ubuntu 6.06 amd 64 and built inkscape from the subversion repository. first installed all the packages i needed with... apt-get install subversion autoconf automake1.7 automake1.8 automake1.9 intltool libglib2.0-dev libtool g++ libpng-dev libgc-dev freetype-tools libfreetype6 liblcms-dev libgtkmm-2.4-dev libxml2-dev libxslt-dev libpopt-dev make ...then i downloaded a working copy from the subversion repository with.... svn checkout https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/inkscape/inkscape/trunk inkscape ...then cd'd into the inkscape directory that subversion had created and built it with the following commands.... ./autogen.sh ./configure make sudo make install ...and i now have a bleeding edge version of inkscape. well worth it. --------------------------------------------- when i fancy updating all i have to do is cd into the inkscape directory again and do use the following commands..... svn update ./autogen.sh ./configure make sudo make install hope this is useful to someone. john

Hi, Is there any way to save a drawing as eps, yet make inkscape keep saving to the svg file with 'save'? Right now, the 'save as' option switches the default 'save' to whatever format is selected in 'save as', which is not necessarily even a format that inkscape can read again. It's very easy to lose work this way. In other words, is there a way to have the equivalent of 'export as'? Thanks, Kasper

Hi all, I was trying to build the new Inkscape 0.44pre4 using the advice at: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CompilingDebian "Oh cool" , I thought -- I didn't think of using Debian's system to install the dependencies. But then... samwise:/project/Packages# apt-get build-dep inkscape Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done E: Build-dependencies for inkscape could not be satisfied. I get the same results for '-t testing', '-t stable', and '-t unstable', too. So it kind of looks like the Inkscape dependencies have package breakage at the moment? Any advice on how to proceed? default directories

WinXP. I can't figure out how to change the default directories for "save as" and "import" (etc). I've tried to change the "Start in" property of the shortcut, and I've tried writing a small script that starts with "cd ...". I've looked in preferences.xml, and didn't find anything that looks likely. I also don't see any likely command line options. So ... how can I change the defaults for these directories? Is it any different in Linux? Thanks, gary

I see from the feature requests that there have been a couple of people asking for a styles panel. Is there any possibility that this will be implemented in the forseeable future? Strange --query-height problem

Hi, I need to know the geometry of several words, so I write a litle php-prog to get all informations, and write it in a file. But the some returned heights could not be true, why? Customized border?

Hi all, Is it possible to customize the border in Inkscape? I see that I can set it so that it's always on top of the drawing, but is there anyway to add in some stuff - like a TV safe area, for instance? Right now I'm doing a work-around by having the extra stuff I need (like the TV safe area) in its own layer, but I always have to go in and make that layer invisible before outputting anything. We need more screenshots of 0.44 release for our gallery: http://inkscape.org/screenshots/index.php. So far we only have 6. One feature I would especially like to get more screen space is the docked palette with the new default color set. For a user, screenshots are perhaps the most important resource at inkscape.org. It's what most people look at first. New users don't like to read descriptions; they want pretty pictures. Existing users considering upgrade don't like to read release notes; they want pretty pictures. Besides, our screenshots are borrowed by a lot of other sites and thus end up all over the web. All this means that screenshots must be as good as Inkscape itself, if not better. The lack or poor quality of screenshots means the entire project's bad health. What makes a good screenshot? * The best "feature screenshots" are made by the author of the corresponding feature. Nobody knows the feature better than him/her. In fact, if you contribute a major feature, you are pretty much supposed to submit a screenshot of it in action, much as you are supposed to describe it in release notes. [Note to Bob: Can you please make a good screenshot with several different examples of SIOX at work?] * However, we also need high quality "work screenshots" showing professional Inkscape work. If you are doing something complex and/or artistic and it turns out well, please take a moment to shoot the Inkscape window with your work. * Use PNG format (not JPG or GIF). * The screenshot should be dense and informative. 1280x1024 (the preferred screenshot size) is a lot of space, so don't waste it on just one or two bits. When doing a feature screenshot, combine the various aspects of the feature, add captions and descriptions, demonstrate all relevant tricks and nontrivial things that you can think of. When doing a work screenshot, find the best zoom/view of the document, and consider doing a double view of the same or different documents (as here: http://inkscape.org/screenshots/gallery/inkscape-0.41-CVS-linux-davinci.png). Hi list, Just installed http://inkscape.modevia.com/ap/inkscape200606080302.package 1. Compressed Inkscape SVG appears twice in 'Save as' menu 2. Effects -> Render -> Function Plotter doesn't render anything, but takes a few second on doing something. No error or warning returned. 3. I may be using some wrong inkscape version, but the sculpture thing (alt drag nodes) doesn't work :( regards, Karol

Inkscape animation test

Hi again, It's the guy who wants to use Inkscape to do animation again... I just did a simple ball-bounce test animation. I used layers for onion-skinning and output a series of pngs, which were then assembled into an avi in a separate program called Monkey Jam. The curious can see the animation at my sketch blog: http://www.sketch.mattjordan.com/2006/06/05/inkscape-animation-test/ I'm actually pretty excited about the possibility of using Inkscape to do more-or-less traditional, cel style animation. One tedious bit, though, is the outputting of the individual png frames. Would it be possible to write a script or a plug-in that would do that as a batch? So, you'd have background layer plus layer 1 output as 000000.png, background plus layer 2 as 000001.png, and so on? If so, where would I go to learn how to write such a script or plug-in? Oh, and I'm still on Windows XP for now, in case that affects your answer. Thanks, Matt Jordan

pattern problems

Hi, I have some difficulties with a pattern. It should look like this: http://www.hagoschaos.de/test/test.html image 1. Inkscape and Opera9 are showing it like this. IE6 and Opera8.54 with the Adobe plugin are showing it like image 2. Firefox shows nothing. Batik won't run here - a Java-window tells me: connection refused ...? Here is the svg-file: http://www.hagoschaos.de/test/svg3a-aa.svg It's 2 patterns: green stripe with transparent background. I didn't know, how to do it with just one pattern. question about moving a selection of multiple clones

I have a question about handling clones (an example file is on http://volition.wustl.edu/test.svg Imagine this: 1) I create an object (the top left one in the file) 2) I make multiple clones of this object and spread them around (the others, not the original of the clones) 3) Then I decide that I want to move the clones a little to the right 4) I select them all (make a selection box with the mouse around all the clones, but do not include the original). 5) I move the selection area to the right (or to any position). 6) I release the mouse button AND THEN THE STRANGE THING HAPPENS: all the clones seem to move to some RANDOM positions. To resolve this 'problem', I can group the selection, move the group and then ungroup. That works. I have the clone option to stay unmoved when the original moves. If I select the move according to transform option in the inkcape preferences, the problem does not occur anymore, that is, the selected clones move as I intend. -------- My questions: 1) What is going on? Why the random moves of some of the clones? 2) Why does it work as I want if I select the option 'move according to transform'. I thought this inkscape pref is ONLY about what happens when you move the original, but not when you move the cloned selection. I wonder whether I am missing something, or whether this is an unintended side effect? ---- BTW: I use Ubuntu Linux Dapper. It happens on the official ubuntu 0.43 inkscape version as well on the latest Linux version I downloaded using the autopackage.

Weird scaling behavior

Hi all, This is probably an SVG question rather than an Inkscape question, but... I started working on an SVG that I downloaded (which apparently came from Adobe Illustrator, as I have discovered via text editor). The original document had an inconvenient canvas size, since I had expanded on the drawing considerably. So I went into document preferences and changed it to 800x600 points (the default units were points, and I think 1 pt = 1 pixel for the designed size, although of course, I know that Inkscape also has 'px' for pixels), since I was planning to lay it out for convenient export to a full-screen PNG. But -- whoops -- the drawing jumped up in scale. It seems like the scale of the drawing is somehow tied to the Y dimension of the canvas. testing effects

I have tested out some of the effects in .44pre2. Overall the usability is quite good and no crashes. One of the filters did cause a lock up but it became usable after that so I quit without saving that last bit and it worked as normal when I started up again. Is there anyway you can use graphical terms instead of mathematical ones. Like the L something makes a tree - if you labeled that tree-maker or something to that effect instead of L something, it would make much more sense. Great work as always. hi, i've just compiled inkscape-20060607-0100 and i'm starting to explore it. i was using 4.3 before so it's a bit of a leap. the first thing i noticed was the pallette along the bottom, what an absolutely fantastic idea. the new icons look great and there are loads of little tweaks in the menus. i've only just started playing with it, but it's pretty amazing so far. massive thanks to all the developers who work on inkscape. john.

hello, i've been finally got inkscape-20060607-0100 compiled on ubuntu 6.06 amd64. i was using apt-get to sort the dependencies and i've probably installed a load of stuff i don't need. this has been a fairly long and painful process because i'm on dialup. what i'm thinking of doing is getting all the debs from /var/cache/apt/archive and building myself a mini repository. i can then do a fresh install on a different partion and go through the process again and work out which packages are actually needed. from this a single apt-get install command could be worked out that would sort all the dependencies with the minimum of downloading. john.
