Gaz:
That sounds like a lot of fonts. I'd use a font manager to create
groups (based on style, typology, etc.) and load and unload them when
necessary.
Having so many fonts active will only make difficult to choose, will
make applications start slower and won't help much.
For linux you can use FontyPython or Font Manager

Where to find SVG artists/designers?
by Philip Rhoades
People,
I have been on this list for quite a while because I am interested in
SVG but I have to give one of my web sites a new look and feel and it
occurs to me that there are some great people out there (who are much
more artistically creative than I am) who could design a new logo, style
sheet etc for us. I looked at DeviantArt but I couldn't see how to get
a message into their system. What I am thinking of is maybe having a
competition with prize money for the best SVG suite that is produced -
how would I go about this? Is there a more appropriate list for this
proposal? Any suggestions?
The site to be revamped is:
http://neuralarchivesfoundation.org
For more info about what we are looking for, people could mail me:
phil AT neuralarchivesfoundation DOT org
(that will bypass my vicious spam filter)
Thanks,
Phil.

Hi Phil,
maybe the contest is nice idea. The problem is that in this kind of
issues the difficulty of decide which design is the 'best'. One
possibility is to organize the contest where the prize's selection
system is decided crowdly by votations between an open community of
designers.
If you need this selection and you dont have the device to do it, one
choice is build it on your own.
Maybe is a nice idea to select material or styles in order to choose
your collaborators.

Use a font management software, I explore fonts before doing designs... typically I even send screenshots of preselected fonts for sample text so that I don't have to install the fonts to do that.

Fonts, fonts & more fonts
by Gary Hawkins
HI
I have over 1000 fonts and not the room to store them all on the home drive
I use a mac running OSX (snow leopard) so I moved some fonts to an external
drive.
Now what is the best way to use these fonts with inkscape - currently have
0.48 but use 0.47 now & then with my black cat cougar electronic die cutter
A short term solution is I drag the font I want to my fonts folder but it
would be nice if I could access the external drive fonts from within
inkscape as I don't always know what font I want until I am part way into
the design.
Can I do this or am I just going to have to either bog down the system with
the fonts or drag them over as I need them and re-start inkscape every time?
Thanks

Printing fails with error message printed to paper.
by Manuel Reimer
Hello,
as my printer works in all other applications, I don't really thing, that the
problem is in my printer setup or the printer driver.
If I try to print from Inkscape (0.48), then anything, I get, is a paper with
this line on it:
**** Unable to open the initial device, quitting.
I tried with GIMP (seems to have the same printing dialog) and there printing
works well.
To get something printed from Inkscape, I have to print to PDF first, then open
this PDF in okular and print it from there to my printer. Pretty silly
workaround. Would be nice if someone could help me to resolve this issue...
Yours

Hello Philip,
It's great that you are looking to the Inkscape artist community for
what they can provide. This kind of approach is one of the things that
makes the open source community work well.
Unfortunately, contests have gotten a bad reputation. They are a way
to get a bunch of people to contribute free art with no assurance that
anyone will actually be compensated. Further, the really good artists
won't participate because they work for pay.
It would probably be best to have people submit proposals and samples
of existing work, and then select someone whose work you prefer.
I am not a professional artist; more oriented towards business and
writing. I use Inkscape (it's my favorite application) to create quilt
mockups and other rough images. So I won't be proposing. But I think
that you and the Inkscape community might be happier with something
other than a contest.
Thank you again for supporting the open source community.

Selecting area to print
by Jon
I have an image in Inkscape that is larger than the paper size for my printer. I do not want to rescale the image. I would like to be able to move the page frame and select the portion of the image to be printed. Is this possible? Is there a way to change the origin for the picture?

Any ideas?
