I think the original thread was in the devel. forum, but just wanted to share my how to make a starry background trick. Rather than make a really small circle and clone it everywhere, just a draw messy scribbled line all over the area that needs stars, using the freehand tool. The kind of thing a toddler would give you to put on the fridge. Then set the line type to the most spaced out, smallest dashes, which are actually square (dash length = line width), so they look like little dots. Make the line white, on a black background you end up with little white points with a pleasing random distribution. Cheers -Terry

Hello, my name is Davide, i'm an inkscape user since i started playing with graphics, then it became a work. I started using inkscape for web-design too and then i had an idea after looking for inkscape resources on the internet. I've found many tutorials, some forums but i couldn't find what i expected for a vector graphic software: a web-site gallery, with the opportunity to publish your drawing inkscape made, so... so i did it and with my small company called nois3lab (http://www.nois3lab.it) decided to make the best we could to provide the inkscape's users community with a powerful web-site not only for self publishing of images but also to increase visibility for inkscape and for the users community too. Now we're almost ready to release it, we need someone to join us to fill the web-site with content (images for first) and to debug the web-site, making it comfortable even though we hope it already is. Actually there's a splash page on http://inkscapegallery.net to prepare users to the next release. We used drupal, cause it's open-source and cause we know it well, we tried to make it work the best it can. So, the development area is at http://test.inkscapegallery.net, if you'd like to, you can start to use it, posting your images, populating forums. We need 10 days of debugging and feedback, then we will move everything in http://www.inkscapegallery.net I know that inkscape.org already have a section called gallery, but i think that what inkscapegallery could be is quite different, we hope to give inkscape the best container for images created with it and the users the best place to submit their work. I hope that after the release we will collaborate with inkscape.org too, cause the primary goal of this web-site is to help inkscape knowledge growth, to give a place where to go to see what inkscape can do. I love inkscape.org cause it's full of documentation, resources, forums. Some of these will be in inkscapegallery to, but it is a gallery web-site for the most and we hope a great web-site gallery. I hope you will be happy to know what we are doing. As soon as the web site will be ready, i'll communicate and we will consider if and how to collaborate for the inkscape growing purpose. Question: Is it a goal of an SVG website to use SVG text file or should we avoid it since it is not selectable in a browser. I'm referring to Nicu's example: http://svg.nicubunu.ro/ My paragraph text wasn't rendering like Nicu's so I figured that I could just write some text in the html document instead. I set the z-order so that the text would be on top of my SVG file. Should I avoid this method? Is this frowned upon? http://svg.heathenx.org heathenx

I totally agree with Nicu. You inkscape users (and others of course) should start serving SVG on your webpages. Browser makers complain that there is no SVG content out there. I am sure they will more quickly develop their SVG support, once there is more SVG content out there. Wikipedia is a good example. They store their files in SVG format, but server PNG per default. They should enable SVG per default and just server PNG as a fallback. At least one third of the browsers out there can display SVG: Opera, Safari, Firefox. None of them is perfect, but more SVG content would definitely challenge them to complete their support. BTW: the Webkit people just added SVG fonts support to the developers version of Webkit/Safari. So, after Opera, the Adobe viewer and Batik, Safari will be the next browser implementing SVG fonts. So, please start using SVG on the web, and direct users to good browsers, such as Opera, Safari, Firefox 3, instead of just waiting for them to complete their SVG support. A long, long time ago, Macromedia Freehand came with a plugin that exported your Freehand document to HTML. Basically, it turned all of the non-text graphics into a series of JPG's and the text was left as is in an HTML document. Here are two possible options that could make the use of SVG on the web less painful... 1)An Inkscape effect (or HTML export functionality) that generates PNG's (or separate SVG's) of all non-text graphics, then generates an HTML document that displays the graphics along with the original text. 2)An SVG-to-HTML program/script that creates separate SVG's for each non-text object in the original SVG document, then generates an HTML document that displays the new SVG graphics along with the original text. Personally, I would love to see Inkscape have the ability to export the document to a set of documents (HTML and associated PNG's and TXT's) that can be displayed as a web page. I can't help with that option, but I could try my hand at creating option 2 in Java. I haven't used my Java skills for over 2 years, so things will probably go a little slowly. If anybody has any ideas, suggestions or comments about such a program, please feel free to let me know. Heck... I might be taking the long way around for all I know. Please stop me if I'm heading in the wrong direction! - Tony
