Automatically set Z-order

Is there a way in Inkscape (extension/plugin) to automatically set the z-order of a number of objects? For example, I want to do what is shown by this image: http://www.maj.com/gallery/ffaat/Stuff/howto.png (The objects here are the same just for convenience. They are not necessarily the same, and are not necessarily in a grid). Ideally, I could provide a direction/line and have it change the z-order of all the selected objects in that orientation (though I would settle for top->down and left->right as I could just pre- and post- rotate) I have written script-fu extension for GIMP before, but think that Inkscape is much harder to add to that way... -Rob A>

I think I might've not been so clear on what I was looking for -- an automatic way to do it with a tool, where I'd select my text, then select some tool or script, and have the appropriate size boxes created and grouped automatically. I realize I could just do it manually, but I don't normally have the time for that. thanks, keith

"fe" filters

New (to me anyway) find. For those who use "fe" type filters like, <feSpecularLighting ...>, <fePointLight...>, etc. Using XP, gimp-2.4.1 will render svg's with filters applied. Can't get inkscape --export-area to work on windows

I am using inkscape in batch mode to convert SVG images to PNG. On Linux it works perfectly. On Windows it works ... until I try using --export-area. Whenever I give --export-area parameter, inkscape silently does nothing. I suspected locale settings but even without fractional parts it does not work... Has anybody succeeded at using inkscape in such way on win? Import question from a newbie

Hi there, Am looking to import AI, DXF and EPS files into Inkscape but am unsure how to get any further. I know I need Image Magick, dfx2svg, pstoedit and skencil installed to achieve this but don't know how to go about it. Is there an easy way to go about this as I've no experience of using the command line and this was the main reason I downloaded Inkscape. I run a MacBook Pro using OSX 10.4.10 with 2.16 GHz intel Core Duo and 1 GB RAM. Thanks in advance for any help! Regards. Intersection of rectangle and traced object

Hello, from the png export of an mask file I vreated a path object by using the buitin tracing function. This works great. I now have to show certain areas of the file only. For this I created a rectangle and used the "intersection" routine. This operation works in principle, but there are some side issues. The rectangle has the outer lines with 2mm, whereas the traced object has 0.282mm. The final object after the intersection has also 2mm line which is to coarse for showing certain details.
