Compile problems in Linux

I tried to install the latest autopackage of Inkscape but it seems my glibc is too old (Requires GLIBC_2.4 - I have GLIBC_2.3.6 ... is it possible to release a GLIBC_2.3.6 autopackage?) and the package suggested I install from sources. When I try to compile the source, i get an error - ui/dialog/ocaldialogs.h:247: error: expected class-name before '{' token ui/dialog/ocaldialogs.h: In constructor 'Inkscape::UI::Dialog::FileListViewText::FileListViewText(guint, Inkscape::UI::Dialog::SVGPreview&, Gtk::Label&, Gtk::Button&)': ui/dialog/ocaldialogs.h:250: error: class 'Inkscape::UI::Dialog::FileListViewText' does not have any field named 'ListViewText' I use Debian Etch (stable) so it seems compiling myself is my best option but I have tried with about 5 different source packages and the result is always the same (the package which created this error was 16060 but it is still there in 16089). I have seen this same error in another forum but I can't find it and I didn't see a resolution so I apologise if it is already resolved. OK, so now I see that the color filters work for the vector images -Ted, I did not see a raster menu, and I don't see anythingin the manual about it. Are there any color conversion effects for raster images within inkscape? Or do I need to turn my tiff image into a grayscale image before I bring it into inkscape? Diederik, Thanks so much for your reply and it sounds as though 0.46 will be quite a release of inkscape with the basic snapping you mention and also the PDF import! After you mentioned the use of existing libraries, I remembered that the "open source" qcad (more cad oreintated than I need) supports some forms of snap, including the "midpoint" and "intersection". I'm no programmer, but I wondered if it might be possible to reuse these algorithms? I've taken a look online, and found a screenshot of the "snapping" on autocad (although too heavy for inkscape use, you may be interested to see); the cursor jumps and changes from the standard "crosshairs" to one of the shapes shown when that particular constraint is appropriate: http://www.cadtutor.net/acad/acad2ki/osnap/images/d-osnap1.gif Again many thanks

Scaling of traces taken from PNG bitmaps

I have a somewhat difficult graphics job to do in collaboration with another graphic artist who is using Corel Draw X3. I am using Inkscape as one of several tools to make up for some deficiencies in Corel Draw. One problem that Corel Draw has and that Inkscape shares (as far as I can tell, correct me if I am wrong) is that it is not very good at putting text on a curve. It can arrange the letters appropriately, and turn them to various angles so that the baseline of a character is tangent to the curve. What it cannot do is bend the characters to make them precisely follow the curve. This is not a huge problem for ordinary text fonts, but it is a severe limitation for some decorative dingbat fonts. Some of these fonts have characters that may have a width that is 10 times the height. To make these fit well on a curved object like a circle, they must bend to fit. Corel has another tool that can bend font characters around a curve - paint Shop Pro. Unfortunately, even several years after absorbing Jasc and taking over Paint Shop Pro, Corel's programmers have not made it possible to export vector drawings from Paint Shop Pro to Corel Draw. Only bitmaps can move from Paint Shop Pro to Corel Draw. In order to move my curved characters from Paint Shop Pro to Corel Draw, I must trace them into vectors. The problem here is that Corel Draw's trace is terrible. Enter Inkscape - Inkscape's trace is MUCH, MUCH better that Corel's. I export the drawings from Paint Shop Pro as 1200 pixels/inch PNG bitmaps and import them into Inkscape. Then I trace them. The traces are PERFECT (almost). Corel Draw should cringe with embarrassment. There is only one problem. Inkscape thinkks that the PNG bitmaps are done at 90 pixels/inch and produces traces that are exactly 13-1/3 times too large. How can I convince Inkscape that these are 1200 pixels/inch bitmaps so that the traces come out the right size?

Inkscape SVN, poppler and missing CairoOutputDev.h

Hi, I wanted to compile Inkscape form SVN the other day but compilation failed because the pdfinput plugin required the header file "CairoOutputDev.h". This header belongs to poppler but for some reason it doesn't install it. I then figured out that I hadn't actually compiled poppler with cairo output support, and was sure that recompiling it with that option enabled would solve it, but as it turns out, it didn't. I got Inkscape to compile only after I manually copied over the Cairo*.h headers from the Poppler source archive to /usr/include/poppler. It seems to me that after looking at the Makefile.am file (I don't know much about autotools though), this header isn't ever installed at all. Is this an error of Inkscape to depend on this header or is there something wrong with Poppler?

Image load from url

I would like to know if it is possible to load an image (element ) from url. I have tried it, but it doesn't work. It only work if I load the image from a local file.
