question about moving a selection of multiple clones

I have a question about handling clones (an example file is on http://volition.wustl.edu/test.svg Imagine this: 1) I create an object (the top left one in the file) 2) I make multiple clones of this object and spread them around (the others, not the original of the clones) 3) Then I decide that I want to move the clones a little to the right 4) I select them all (make a selection box with the mouse around all the clones, but do not include the original). 5) I move the selection area to the right (or to any position). 6) I release the mouse button AND THEN THE STRANGE THING HAPPENS: all the clones seem to move to some RANDOM positions. To resolve this 'problem', I can group the selection, move the group and then ungroup. That works. I have the clone option to stay unmoved when the original moves. If I select the move according to transform option in the inkcape preferences, the problem does not occur anymore, that is, the selected clones move as I intend. -------- My questions: 1) What is going on? Why the random moves of some of the clones? 2) Why does it work as I want if I select the option 'move according to transform'. I thought this inkscape pref is ONLY about what happens when you move the original, but not when you move the cloned selection. I wonder whether I am missing something, or whether this is an unintended side effect? ---- BTW: I use Ubuntu Linux Dapper. It happens on the official ubuntu 0.43 inkscape version as well on the latest Linux version I downloaded using the autopackage.

Weird scaling behavior

Hi all, This is probably an SVG question rather than an Inkscape question, but... I started working on an SVG that I downloaded (which apparently came from Adobe Illustrator, as I have discovered via text editor). The original document had an inconvenient canvas size, since I had expanded on the drawing considerably. So I went into document preferences and changed it to 800x600 points (the default units were points, and I think 1 pt = 1 pixel for the designed size, although of course, I know that Inkscape also has 'px' for pixels), since I was planning to lay it out for convenient export to a full-screen PNG. But -- whoops -- the drawing jumped up in scale. It seems like the scale of the drawing is somehow tied to the Y dimension of the canvas. testing effects

I have tested out some of the effects in .44pre2. Overall the usability is quite good and no crashes. One of the filters did cause a lock up but it became usable after that so I quit without saving that last bit and it worked as normal when I started up again. Is there anyway you can use graphical terms instead of mathematical ones. Like the L something makes a tree - if you labeled that tree-maker or something to that effect instead of L something, it would make much more sense. Great work as always. hi, i've just compiled inkscape-20060607-0100 and i'm starting to explore it. i was using 4.3 before so it's a bit of a leap. the first thing i noticed was the pallette along the bottom, what an absolutely fantastic idea. the new icons look great and there are loads of little tweaks in the menus. i've only just started playing with it, but it's pretty amazing so far. massive thanks to all the developers who work on inkscape. john.

compiling on ububtu 6.06 amd64 - SUCCESS!

hello, i've been finally got inkscape-20060607-0100 compiled on ubuntu 6.06 amd64. i was using apt-get to sort the dependencies and i've probably installed a load of stuff i don't need. this has been a fairly long and painful process because i'm on dialup. what i'm thinking of doing is getting all the debs from /var/cache/apt/archive and building myself a mini repository. i can then do a fresh install on a different partion and go through the process again and work out which packages are actually needed. from this a single apt-get install command could be worked out that would sort all the dependencies with the minimum of downloading. john.
