layer icons

Howdy. I'm very pleased by the introduction of a layer window. Will help greatly to manage more complex artwork. I noticed however the button icons are quite poor in doing what they should - being easier to distinguish than text labels. They all include the rectangle signifying "layer". But the fact that this element appears on evey single one of them makes it nothing but visual noise. I suggest simplifying those icons to the core of what they are trying to say. Use distinguishable silhouettes, color. scripting with inkscape

Hi, Is there a manual for scripting inkscape with python? Tried to find it but nothing so far. Also can this be done: Having a lot of (small) eps files, open each one in turn, copy/extract all objects to a master document at a certain position, close file etc, and finaly save master document? You all will be happy to note that the new "reject posts from non-members" has caught a lot of spam. There are about 6-8 times as many messages being rejected as before, about half of which are spam. Bryce

Win2000 Error

Hello All, I recently installed Inscape on a Win2000 machine and it ran well; however, when I tried to run one of the more recent development versions I got the following error message. "The procedure entry point FreeAddrInfoW could not be located in the dynamic link library WS2_32.dll." Can anyone help with this? I think i have to re-read your message, j, but before that I'll pass another email to you. If we just look at the rectangle and it's white dots, shouldn't we say that if the rectangle has a certain shape when the dots are in a certain place at one time, the rectangle should always have that same shape in other times?

inkscape bucket fill?

hello everyone, i've been dabbling with svg cartoons. i've been scanning black and white line drawings and converting them to svgs with the trace bitmap tool. i then colour them in by drawing blocks of colour and lowering them behind the outline. this is an incredibly time consuming way of doing things and i was wondering if there is a quicker way of doing it that i'm missing. i've tried exporting to a bitmap, using the gimp to bucket fill the gaps and then tracing it back to an svg again, but it's not the most elegant way of working. is there some kind of tool in inkscape equivalent to the bucket fill tool in gimp? thanks. john michaelson.

Inkscape not Recognizing Fonts

How do i make Inkscape display my system fonts on a Windows XP SP2 system? The system fonts show up in the text font dialog, but when I go to apply the font inkscape resorts back to my default. Is there a way to make it adhere to the font that I want it to use? --------------------------------- Yahoo! Messenger with Voice. Make PC-to-Phone Calls to the US (and 30+ countries) for 2¢/min or less.

Rectangle Shape: Not Rounded, but 2 white dots are not in Upper Right Corner

i'm doing the Tutorial Shapes.and I'm working on the blue rectangle. it's a perfect angular rectangle. A white dot appears in the upper right corner. I drag it down. The rectangle 's corners get rounded.We now can see another white dot in upper right corner. I drag it to the left. Rectangle's shape changes further. I drag this same dot (on the top part of rectangle) back to the corner. And i'm surprised to see that it has become a prefect rectangle again i thought it could only be a perfect (angular) rectangle if the two white dots are in the upper-right corner. It gets even stranger. I play around with the up-and-down white dot (the dot on the right side of the rectangle). Dragging it up or down doesn't change the shape of the now not-rounded rectangle.

New Feature: View Rotation

Hello, An idea just struck me: A View Rotation Tool Depending on the angle, stokes are more or less difficult. We all know the effect: Drawing a freehand circle. One part is ok, the rest is ... well ... So I propose to add a tool to rotate the view to any angle. This way, we can work with the perfect angle (just as on paper). The tool should be a small circle in the bottom bar. Clicking it turns the image upright. Drag left - Rotate clockwise, drag right - rotate the other way. Print Margins

I'm running inkscape 0.43_1 on FreeBSD 5.4 & when I go and print it will not display a config box where I can set margins. Is there anyway to set margins when printing through inkscape? I can set some options if I use Print Direct. I'm not using CUPS because that crashes gnome ports (which includes inkscape as it requires libgnomeprint). The only way I can print correctly with margins at the moment is to export each picture I want to a image and use another program to print it correctly. This is annoying. Michael Pope

new path tool?

hello, i've been using inkscape to colour in cartoons. i've been doing this by drawing a block of colour behind the outline, select both and use the path division tool to seperate the excess colour from the bit i want to keep. the problem is that the division tool cuts the outline down to fit the colour. i've had to duplicate the outline first and use that to do the division, then clean up the remnants of the duplicated outline. this is obviously a slow and painful way of working. what i need is a path tool that does the division thing on the lower vector (the colour) without affecting the upper vector (the outline). is there such a path tool? if not, would it be hard to implement? maybe it could be done with a script or something? thanks. john michaelson.

keeping configuration of straight lines

Hi, I'm trying to draw a set of blue straight lines with arrows but I don't know how to keep the configurations of my lines. That is: To make a blue straight line with an arrow I create a line and after I use the fill and stroke window to set the arrow and the color of my line. After this and I try to draw my second line, so I have to set the arrow and the color again... So, I'd like to draw the following lines with the same configuration of my last one. Is it possible? When I draw rectangles inkscape keeps the last configuration. I'm using inkscape 0.43. Thanks, Marco

linear transparency in bitmap patterns. Is it possible?

Is it possible to change the transparency of one part of the bitmap more than the other part? You see this effect a lot, that the transparency is like a gradient. For instance, look at the mirrored text in the following image: http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/teams/art.gnome.org/themes/splash_screens/Sp… Of course, this image can easily be done in Inkscape, given that the font is available. But imagine that the mirrored word 'gnome' is available as bitmap only. That can't be done easily, because you cannot change the transparency as a gradient. At least as far a I could figure out. Or maybe I am missing something. Any suggestions?

This mailing list has now been modified to restrict posting only to list members. The proposal for this change was made on the "linear transparency in bitmap patterns" thread. I said I would make the change if a dozen people voted in favor, and no one voted to oppose. These conditions were met decisively this evening, and so the change has taken affect. The motivation for this change is that it will make it more difficult for spammers to send spam to the list. The one main downside to this change is that it will also make it more difficult for Inkscape newbies to post questions. This was the original reason why we did not set the list up this way. However, we have comment forms on the website that people could use if they really did not wish to join. Also, the inconvenience to users not on the list needs to be weighed against the inconvenience of users *on* the list. As well, while this may inconvenience some users, this type of mailing list setting is becoming more and more common, so should not be too surprising to new users. In addition, non-list members benefit from this change because the online list archives will have less spam, and thus will be easier to navigate through. If anyone has any concerns, then now is the time to speak up! Otherwise, this change will become permanent as of this time tomorrow. Thanks, Bryce

Gradients with transparency in a bitmap can be used and created with gradient editor in Gimp. I was able to recreate the effects on your gnome link using it (background color to transparency over it).
