Not that I know of. As I mentioned above, you may find it useful to put some time into learning Scribus. It provides a more complete featureset for doing printing, brochures, etc. However, you'll need to put some time into learning it, and the interface is distinctly different from Inkscape, so be forewarned about that. However, I've heard good comments about it from professional printers, so it may be well worth the time. Bryce

I have a few comments/questions. 1) Multi-page documents? My wife made a brochure but didn't like having to have two separate files for the outside and inside of her document. Does the file format allow multiple pages? And where is this documented? 2) I want to have my grid and other measurements to be in inches. Where can the default units be defined so when I start up inkscape it shows inches? Where is this documented? (I know how to change it for one session or per document but I want it as the default -- and should not require recompiling.) 3) My wife used to use commercial and proprietary software that had wizards and easy interface for making brochures and greeting cards. Using inkscape in addition to openclipart is a substitute, but still all the layout must be done, images found and saved, resized, etc. Any thoughts on a wizard or a simple interface to help? Presentations with Inkscape

Hello, I'm currently preparing a talk and thus looking for a presentation software. The following criterias have to be met: * open source software * should either run on my Apple iBook, a NetBSD system, or both I've been toying with Inkscape lately, and I enjoyed drawing some figure for the talk. It's real fun to use all the nice features like rounded boxes, transparency, etc. Inkscape provides. So while I was at it, I just went ahead and created the correspondent presentation slide. It took some time until I actually discovered "inkview" -- you should definitely place a note somewhere, so people will find it! But this is just the thing I was looking for. No fancy transitions and other useless stuff, but clean font rendering and nice figures. Fonts actually render much cleaner than in Apple Works' presentations. It's a lot faster than batik-slideshow, plus it scales the slide down, so you don't have to worry about that when you draw it. So, I just wanted to thank you for this great piece of software, and keep it up! Just as a side note: I installed Inkscape 0.40 and all its dependencies from The NetBSD Packages Collection [1] both on NetBSD and Mac OS X 10.3, and it works like a charm. Hi, I'm currenty still using Inkscape 0.38, which was included in my Linux distribution (Ubuntu), but when I tried to compile v 0.40, I get error messages at the end of ./configure, saying that some libs (like XML) are missing. How can I fix this? Actually, since 0.38 works, all of the required libs should be installed, and I really would like to check out the new features! Sorry, we're dealing with users here not developers. I see it as potentially more harmful than good. When I look at extension-errors.log the first thing I see is "Extension "AI Output" failed to load because a dependency was not met. Dependency:: type: executable location: path string: pstoedit" and this is followed by another 12 of the same. Firstly, new user probably does not know what "dependency" means. Secondly, he/she might and I stress just might know what "type:executable" means. Third, probably doesn't know what "location:path" means and fourthly doesn't know what "string: pstoedit" means. And this goes on and on. If they don't know what they mean how are they going to install them? No way, except they have a friendly developer. Hey,and if they turn the message off. How do they get it to show again if they want to check to see whether their installation has been successful, and they have forgotten where to look? color loss when saving adob illustrator file in eps-format?

Hello, I've made some figures in Adobe Illustrator to be included in my final thesis written in Latex. But when I save the files in eps-format the different color shades get lost and are replaced by 4 colors: the plain cymk. Win32 build failed to load extensions

I've been downloading Win32 builds from http://inkscape.org/win32-snap/ the last few days. Since a week or longer, the builds do not start up normally anymore. I always get the following notice: ---------------------------------------- One or more extensions failed to load. The failed extensions have been skipped. Inkscape will continue to run normally but those extensions will be unavailable. While these extensions aren't essential for me, I was still wondering... will these extensions be distributed with Inkscape in the future? Why do they refer to Linux-style paths in the Windows build? Misplaced objects with librsvg or EPS

Hi, here is a challenge for you guys, inkscape users, and a big trouble for me. I created this deck of cards with Illustrator and Inkscape. The final work has been made with Inkscape. Inkscape renders the file perfectly but when I convert my file to EPS (or PS or ai) or regular SVG, I obtain a messy rendering where all my objects are misplaced and rotation as misinterpreted. Hi folks, First let me say what a great program inkscape is! I'm really happy to find it! Now on to the problem :-) I compiled inkscape myself according to the instructions on the wiki and it runs fine on OS X 10.3.7. I'm seeing two issues so far. The first one is the most annoying and that is on the stroke menus, when choosing style, the drop down list appears behind the box so you can't see part of it. This is even more true in areas like preferences where you cannot see the drop-down lists for things like "Dialogs On Top" in the "Windows" Tab, at all b/c it is completely concealed behind the window. Did I screw up the compile or do something wrong here? The second thing is that it seems that it refuses to save a file in .ai format. I just save it in svg anyway but when experimenting I found that it always gave an error message that file /Path/name/of/file could not be saved. Any ideas about either of those.? Patches or anything I could apply? Thanks, Trevis

Hi, We are planning to do some redesign work on export bitmap palette and export in common. We'd like to know better how you use "export to bitmap" function, what you're missing and what is your way to do export. Basically, we see two ways of exporting: 1. Common "Export.." dialog, where file formats will be listed and option dialog will raise upon choosing of of them. 2. Current "Export to bitmap" palette for those people who do export to some bitmap file format all the time. What we need is decent descriptions (use cases) of your workflow a propos exporting. Another important thing is batch export. If you need batch exporting, please provide us information, what is the best way to do batch export in ian application like Inkscape according to your experience. Thank you in advance. Alexandre

Text Stability

I typed a page with the same font in 3 different sizes and then deleted one of the titles. In re-doing it, I attempted to move the box which comes down from the Text at the top by clicking on the very top bar, and everything went nuts and I lost everything. I presume I should read the Help section; ...but did I do something really stupid? Robert.

My impressions on Inkscape

As a long time Macromedia Freehand user I was curious about the latest release of Inkscape, which I have been testing for about a week. These are my observations. Inkscape's interface is so unintuitive that it almost hurts. The layout and the look and feel of the various panels and dialog boxes are awful. They lack coherence, functionality and are badly implemented. Examples: the Object properties palette is a puzzle; I expected that this would be one of the most important panels where the essential parameters of the selected object can be found and edited. I've found nothing to edit there. The font palette looks like it was borrowed from an office suite. The implementation of gradients are so weird that hard to describe. The Export Bitmap dialog box is poorly designed, the window wouldn't even close after saving files. The program lacks the tool to group panels into different panel groups. In addition, most of the features are incomplete. The new text on path is nice but, if you design a circular logo, most of the time, you would want to put text on the top and on the bottom of the circle. Can you do this in Inkscape? I couldn't figure out. Also when export text on path, it exports the path as well, which is unacceptable. Another example: the implementation of patterns. It is nice to have it but it is basic to have the tool to edit it after applied to a shape (moving, scaling and so on). Without this the feature has limited use. I also couldn't rename pattens but stuck with the generic names. I missed the preset zoom settings at the left bottom corner, as well. A word on priorities. In my view adding features should proceed from the most essential toward the less important. At the hart of a vector drawing program one expect to find tools, such as swatches, gradients, tints and pattern palettes and the capacity to to export and import them from one document to the other. Symbols are also essential to work efficiently. Until they are implemented pointless adding less commonly used ones like bitmap tracing, for instance. Any graphic artist can tell that this is a relatively seldom used tool in the actual work environment. By the way, I liked the Tracing Bitmap tool. What impressed me in Inkscape is the ingenious and interactive ways it allows to edit shapes. Also the fact that I could stroke path with gradient without first expanding it. I found great that I could export a selection rather than the entire ardboard; this feature dearly missed even in adobe illustrator. I also liked the options on the upper menu bar. This helps setting parameters effortlessly and it eliminates the need of dealing with additional dialog boxes which are always nuisances. I liked the layers and the fact that they are collapsible�-one more thing less cluttering the work environment. Would be nice if I could move object from one layer to the other with a click of a mouse. My conclusion: before adding additional features polish up and complete the existing ones. Also before go on adding more tools implement the fundamentals (swatches, tints, gradients, patterns, symbols and so on) and redo the interface from scratch. jozsefmak

loading large files

I've finally had an opportunity to spend some time analyzing the problem you had loading that large SVG. Your file did eventually load, although I think it may have taken as much as half an hour to do so on my machine. In Inkscape, sibling XML nodes are currently kept in singly-linked lists, which are not an efficient data structure when dealing with large numbers of siblings (in this case, more than 87000). It is possible to use faster data structures, but they would come at the cost of using extra memory. As it was, once the document loaded my machine ran out of memory when the renderer kicked in. So, I'm not really sure what the best course of action would be. I do think we have a problem dealing with large documents in general. I am CCing the development list for their suggestions. -mental

However, both sodipodi and my colleague's copy of Adobe, which also loads the file, seem to chop off the image (which is very wide) at its left and right extents - so perhaps they don't really load the whole file. Perhaps I'm just asking too much & should make my files smaller? Thanks again, gav. P.S. Head's up on 0.41 release

Hi guys, This is just an fyi that we're entering the run-up to the 0.41 release today, and have entered feature-freeze mode. I guestimate we'll have the official 0.41 release out in about 10 days. Meantime, this would be an opportune time to be downloading and testing the nightly snapshots. We'll probably be announcing release candidates starting in a week or so. At this point we're looking for crash bugs, data loss, and build failures, that have not yet been reported. 0.41 is primarily a bug fix release; there's a few new features but no major changes. The main motivation for this release is that 0.42 is going to have major changes going in, and want to get a good stable release out before we delve into this work. Bryce
