Opening large files

Hi, Sorry if this has already been dealt with but: I have a large svg file which I cannot open in Inkscape (v.0.40). My file is a large graph produced with graphviz (http://www.graphviz.org/), but inkscape seems to hang using 99% of the cpu when I try to open it. The same file opens in sodipodi 0.34, though admittedly it takes about 10s to open. After opening sodipodi is using about 68% of memory, on my 512Mb machine. Inkscape seems to stop using more memory after 55%, but it never opens. The svg file is about 5.1Mb. Is there anything I can do about this? I'd like to use Inkscape to view & modify this file. I reckon this comes from Inkscape not being listed in the Free Software Directory <http://directory.fsf.org/>. I've just submitted a request to add an entry for Inkscape. I listed Bryce Harrington <you_know_your_email@...420... ;o)> as the maintainer and developer. Hi Am still trying to install inkscape. I have tryed on suse 9.1, redhat 9 and fedora 1 always coming against a lack of gtk+ even after updating. How to vectorize diagrams

Using Post-Script Fonts in Inkscape

My last action was to use Post-Script Fonts in Inkscape, those, wich installed with Adobe Type Manager. I can see the fonts in other applications (OpenOffice, FreeType in GIMP) but not in Inkscape. Any suggestions? Feature request? THX Stefan Pampel

Wish: Autosimplify + Autocollapse after tracing

Hi everyone, With the colorfull new version of bitmap tracing included in Inkscape, the pleasure of designing with vectors made a giant step in my heart. By the way after tracing a picture, I always use the option to "simplify path" (Ctrl+F). Cause else there are too many anchor to work on the shape effisciently. "Simplifying" tool does a great job and is easy to use with monochrome tracing. But it's a pain to use with colorfull shape. You have to select all anchors of each shape (one by one). Painfull. And it creates some holes beetwen the shapes. So my wish, or call it a suggestion :), is to add in the tracing dialog box two checkboxes. One asking to "Auto-simplify" the shapes and the other one to "Auto-collapse" gaps between generated shapes. What do developpers think about it ? This two checkboxes would blow my mind... removing "SP* Properties" dialogs

I want to remove "SP* Properties" dialogs that are listed in the right-click menu of shape objects. Reasons: - they use technical terms without any explanations and are therefore confusing - they don't stay on top (I just didn't bother with them, planning to remove them eventually) - they're very limited (no units, no live update from selection) - most importantly, they're now completely redundant: if you want access to the raw attributes, use the XML editor; if you want convenient units, explanations, and live update from selection, use the controls bars of the corresponding tools. So I'd like to know if anyone is really using them, and if so, why and what needs to be done to help these users move away from this ancient remnant to more modern facilities. In other words, is there any unique functionality or convenience in them that I'm failing to see?

Well, I have just tried to install gtk+2-devel, but yast is now telling me I need to install gtk+2 = 2.1.0 and gtk-doc-common. Capitalized Text and Image Export

First I want to say how much I like the new version (0.40) of Inkscape. Great work everyone. There are a couple of things I'd like to mention, which may or may not be bugs. (1) When I have caps lock on, all of the other keys on the keyboard act as if the shif key is being pressed, not just the letters. For example, if I press the "8" key a "*" symbol is displayed. Or, if I press the ";" key a ":" is displayed. Is this intentional? (2) When I try to export an image Inkscape automatically minimizes the export dialog window. The only way I can make it visible is by right clicking on the minimized window and maximizing it to cover the entire screen of my monitor. So I only get 2 choices for display of the image export dialog, not at all or full screen. This isn't a major problem, but it would be good if I could manipulate the dialog like any other floating window. I am also wondering if there are any plans to implement a fully justified text feature in Inkscape. I realize it is a vector graphics program, but I think this is one of the only things that would prevent Inkscape from being used for document layout. Hi I have tier to install inkscape to suse 9.1 a number of times and failed. Each time I get a message telling me to install gtk+. I have installed all the gtk packegs I can find in yast but am still unable to install inkscape. Can anyone offer advice? Results of librsvg bug: Inkscape action?

Well, I reported the bug about having to resave gradients to render correctly with librsvg: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=161467 But they make a good point about reordering gradients: ------- Additional Comment #5 From Dom Lachowicz 2005-01-02 16:32 ------- it is best, in my opinion, if the SVGs are emitted in a "streamable" format, which means that gradient 578 should appear before gradient 581 in the file. technically librsvg, not inkscape, is at fault here. but that doesn't mean that inkscape still isn't doing something stupid. Multi-object color adjustments

Maybe you can already do this in Inkscape, but it would be nice if there was some way to do broad color adjustments with multiple objects selected. This would not make sense on the RGB scale, but on the HSV scale this would be very useful. This would allow you to adjust the tint, brightness, and saturation on a group of objects. For example, if I create a complex multi-object button, I want to quickly make different versions in various color shades without having to edit everything carefully by hand. If there is already some way to do this please let me know. -- // Chris

filling a composed object

hi, I have the following situation: I drew 2 calligraphic lines which cross each other, so they form a closed area. I did a union operation on them so they form 1 object. Now I wonder: how can I fill this object with a gradient? Inkscape UI mock-up

Good day. This image is just a simple little mock-up of an idea for an alternate Inkscape interface. Since most users like the current interface, there would, of course, be no need to change it. But when I read that, amazingly, future versions of Inkscape will incorporate SVG animation, (!) I thought the interface might need a little adjustment to incorporate future features (like the animation feature, filters, anything else that could be used to display the power of SVG). I could be way off with this, but it's just an idea. What do you other users think? Would this type of interface be too bulky? To have collapsible/detachable toolbox compartments is, in my opinion, a great thing. It could provide what Bryce has called "interface flexibility" and make room for additional features. A few ideas that I had that were not shown in the image: 1) Each collapsible/detachable compartment could also be stretched horizontally or vertically and docked to the outer regions of the document window, either perpendicular or parallel to any document window border. (Giving Inkscape a lot of flexibility and users a lot of room for customization.) 2) The number of compartments and their contents could be altered by the user through an addition in the "Options" menu. Or maybe tools and tool options could be dragged from one compartment to another and/or removed/added through a context menu that appears when a person right clicks on an icon. (?) Actually, almost none of the icons are in their absolute best position. This was just for example (notice multiple icons). Were it to actually be implemented, a more-capable-and-knowledgeable-about-UI-layout-than-me programmer would certainly arrange them as they saw fit. (I'm not a programmer.) How would you include tool buttons for additional features in the current interface? (There's not much room.) This type of layout - in the hands of skilled programmers - could provide the answer. Hi Bryce, Many thanks for the speedy reply; ...apologies from the turtle. Although I haven't yet had time to pursue your links, I have just had a good look at Inkscape's "imaged" or "embedded" or "path-converted" font work: ....and am I ever impressed!! This comment comes by way of contrast with my existing SVG editor, though polemics is not the purpose here. It is simply first-rate work and kudos to the authors. (The importance of typography is too often under-rated.) Your idea videlicit the on-line print media fits perfectly with current plans to establish a reputation as a "Paladin for SVG." A bit pretentious, but I am absolutely baffled by the failure of SVG to truly catch fire. Politics may be a factor. I can think of two Window's vendors who had a strong market position to capitalize on with SVG and didn't/haven't. I have had plans for a letter to John Dvoark at PC Magazine in the works concerning SVG for some time. Now is the time to act for Inkscape shows every indication of being, not an incidental reference in the SVG world, but rather the centre of attention. The W3C aside, when you look at the fully developed mathematical implications of scalar and vector fields, the sky is the limit as it was/is the tool used to describe the real world by physcists up to esoteric matters. Texture is as always an issue, so, if the capability isn't already there, the ability to import a, for instance, .jpg file and stretch it like a latex sheet to fit within an object's boundaries is a major interest with me. Thanks again for your response, and, though a presumptuous newcomer, please permit me a "tip of the hat" to a truly dedicated group who have produced a program of signficant quality which refuses to rest on its laurels--- a quality which has inspsired me to once again resume the battle to see SVG attain the high ground in vector graphics.
