Hi all, Felix made a good suggestion to start posting some 'Call For Volunteers' on tasks that new folks would find straightforward to work on. Here's the first. A while back I started an 'Inkscape Examples' section on our website. We've got a couple things posted, but it's been largely neglected. We need a volunteer to take charge of beefing this section of the website up. This task requires good HTML skills (PHP helps too). No Inkscape development knowledge is needed. Art/design talents will also be pretty important. The purpose of the Inkscape Examples site is to show off different _ways_ Inkscape is used. It's needs to go beyond just showing off new features (we use the Screenshots page for that), but must be complete works. It's not intended to be simply a place for users to post their work (we have a Gallery section, plus OCAL and Deviant art for that), but rather to provide _one_ example of different _type_ of use. It's not intended to teach people how to use Inkscape (we have the Tutorials for that), but more to inspire and entice people into using Inkscape in new ways. Ideally, the site should have a listing of different types of things that can be made with Inkscape, with each having a link to a set of pages describing that thing. (Sort of like a woodworking magazine article showing how to build a cabinet.) For example: * Web site design * CD booklet * Portrait * Presentation * Cross-stitch pattern * Icon set * Landscape design * Org chart * Company logo * etc. Also, there could be examples of different art "styles". For instance, creating 'distressed' art like Brisgeek is into right now, or using the Trace Bitmap feature to artify a photo, or creating three dimensional effects via spherical gradients. "Presentations" could have a link to a page containing an example presentation that someone made, a set of steps for how the user created their presentation, problems/solutions encountered, and the source files for review. Sort of like an article in a woodworking magazine explaining how the author built a table. I think this effort could be done by just collecting examples of work other users have done and posted, interviewing the creator, and writing it up into a decent example, and putting it onto the website. I'd bet, if done well, you could also get it published in an online magazine like OS News. If you want to work on this, your first step will be to go ahead and put together an example of something, and post it here. We will also need someone to take care of editing/reviewing examples and posting them into the website, so if you're interested in doing that, send me your SourceForge ID. Bryce

After posting on inkscape-user and increasing the sample size, it seems to me that there is a clear consensus in favor of the new style. Bulia wrote: >There's no need to argue. proposed change to icons

On inkscape-devel, I've proposed some changes to some of Bulia's icons. Some people seemed to like the new versions better, and some didn't. We didn't seem to have a statistically significant sample of opinions, so I'm reposting now to both inkscape-devel and inkscape-user. I've made some changes to the icons in the copy of Inkscape I have running on my own machine. If other people agree that this is an improvement, I'll do some more work in the same style. Here is a screenshot: http://www.lightandmatter.com/proposal.png The rotation and flip tools are my new versions, and next to them you can see the lower and raise icons in the original style, with the greenish-yellow color. My idea here was to tone down the colors a little, and also use transparency to create more of a visual impression of the object rotating. It's meant to look like the new Gimp 2.0 icons, which IMO are very professional looking. The svg from which the icons were constructed is here: http://www.lightandmatter.com/icons.svg Please give an on-list opinion in binary, 0=don't change, 1=change. (The icons can be tweaked more later, of course, if there is a consensus for it.)

Hi I'm experimenting with inkscape for drawing figures for a scientific paper (physics, where lots of greek letters and math symbols are used to label things) The final desired form is pdf: I'm exporting from inkscape svg to eps, then converting to pdf with the Mac OS X "preview" application. Is there any hack or workaround to get inkscape to use a characters from a math symbol font? (It seems to recognize things line "wingdings", not just roman characters) Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi guys, Just fyi, we're thinking of targeting a 0.41 release for the late Jan, early Feb. We're thinking of focusing on making it a bugfix release plus a few new features. We've got several changes in the works that will introduce some instability for a while, so we figure it would be best to get another release out before we get too far into those big changes. Bryce

numerical skew

The transform dialog offers moving, scaling and rotating. How does one apply a skew of X% (e.g. 25%)? I am using a CVS build from yesterday. -- -trent <foo> Oh fuck, the power just went off. <foo> uh... <foo> Boy does this seem wrong.

Feature request: Themable icons

It would be nice if the icons in the menus and such were themable; I've been making changes to the global icons.svg, but I'd like to put it in ~/.inkscape/ to affect a user-only change. Any chance on doing something like this as-is, or eventually making it possible? Thanks, Andrew

Segmentation fault when ungrouping

Hello I am running version .40 of inkscape under SuSE9.1 linux. I got a segmentation fault when trying to do the following: 1) I opened the help page Help/Keys and Mouse 2) I opened another window (letter size): File/New/letter 3) I copied the second column (Canvas) to the new window 4) I tried to ungroup that column with Ctrl+Shift+G 5) I got a segmentation fault -frankie

Disabling alt+click alt+drag in linux (Selection Under)

Hello, I wanted to get Selection Under working, but alt+click seems to be grabbed by my window manager to drag the window. I am running fluxbox under SuSE9.1 linux. I tried to google disabling alt+click and alt+drag under linux, but I haven't found any relevant page that tells me how to do so. Thanks, -frankie

Inkscape .4 segfault

Been getting a segfault starting inkscape .4 and also tried a pre .4 that ran fine back in Oct. Using strace I traced it to icons.svg. Rename it and it runs fine. Any idea what might be wrong. Build errors in CVS

I just tried to build Inkscape from CVS for the first time in a couple of weeks. I noticed the following Debian-specific problems: - AFAICT, python-dev and libperl-dev are now build dependencies; they should be added to the Build-Depends line in debian/control. - After building, dh_strip attempts to strip an ar archive, causing packaging to fail. Thanks for the rapid reply! Scribus actually didn't work on the example I tried. It didn't render the gradients correctly, and it also munged the fonts I was using (made Vera into a monospaced font). I guess I can render everything as png instead of pdf. (Pdftex can accept either as input.) Is anybody working actively on direct PDF output? The inability to output gradients to PS or PDF is a serious limitation that will probably be enough to prevent an awful lot of users from using Inkscape. Maybe my perceptions and priorities are different from other people's but it surprises me that people would be working on, e.g., Perl and Python extensions when a really basic feature like this is not yet implemented. Maybe it's just the nature of OSS: developers want to work on stuff that interests them personally, so that determines which features get added.

Hi i've only recently discovered Inkscape and found it very promising. However, there is a feature that i miss a lot: the possility to define a frame for text with 1) dynamic line wrapping and 2) "local" formating options (e.g to mix various types of fonts, to use bold, italic, superscripts, subscripts in the text etc.). I have looked at the list of requested features and i found several related entries (e.g. 863325, 1084658 and 1080623) some of them dating back to last year. But there seems to be very little response to these requests. Without this feature inkscape is not a real alternative for me, unfortunately. Do you plan to implement such a feature? thanks imre

Your changes allow this to be done with uniformly scaled text. So my original problem is solved. However, I do not understand what is happening with non-uniform scaling, and it worries me that it simply may be giving the wrong result. The simplest case is where the text is stretched or compressed with no vertical change. The present code changes the font size. Why? I just cannot find anywhere that this is the correct result. As far as I can see the font size should be the same after as before. XaraX1 operates in the way that I see as correct. It shows two windows for a text object. 1. The font size. 2. The Aspect Ratio which is Width/Height as a percentage. The AR is 100.00 for any font size as initially written. With non-uniform scaling. The new font size is shown and the AR goes >100 or <100% depending on the scaling. When a piece of text is reselected the new AR and the font size are shown. It is straightforward to set the AR to 100 and the font size to your original font size and you get the original sized text back. Inkscape cannot not do this. With horizontal stretching or compressing. With Xarax1 there is no change in font size no matter how much the text width is changed. This is consistent with font size based on letter height. With Inkscape the font size changes with the text width. I think this is wrong. I agree with you in principle that it might be good design to have a whole different piece of software whose job was SVG->PS or SVG->PDF. However, as far as I can tell, Scribus isn't going to fill that role, and I'm not aware of any other project that will. Scribus isn't cross-platform, it has no command-line interface AFAICT, at the moment it does not do a very good job on SVG->PDF, and I don't see any signs that they consider it to be part of their core mission to act as an automatic behind-the-scenes SVG->PDF converter that other programs can use library-fashion. To me, it would be much more logical for such functionality to be in Inkscape, rather than Scribus; but then, that's easy for me to say, since I don't have the C++ skills or the time that would be needed to do the necessary work on Inkscape :-)
