Mysterious disappearance of Bezier- Handles

Hi! While I click and drag with the bezier pen tool, I get those nice bezier handles so can shape bezier curves accurately. The moment I close a path, and then select the node-editing tool, i can click on nodes, but i don't get those bezier-rubberbands or handles, so can shape the curves further. When I convert an object to path, and attempt to re-shape a segment or a curve, I still don't get those bezier-handles anymore. Might I have accidentally switched off their view? Have tried everywhere, can't seem to find the option. How do I get those back please? I could happily edit curves in this version ever since it was released, but it just stopped one fine day a few months ago. FYI, I'm using 0.46-devel on my production-stable ubuntu 9.04 on a macbookpro. Can't change this in a hurry either. Regards niyam

Shrinking the results of JPG to SVG conversion

Hi all, I have a number of *.jpg files that I need to convert to svg. I am using inkscape for the conversion. The problem is that the resulting svg is almost 5 times the size of the jpeg file. I have tried saving the file in compressed plain svg but with no success. The file is still very large. Is there anything I can do to shrink the file? I have run an open source cleanup tool called cleanSVG downloadable from codeplex but that has not helped. I am open to using other JPG to SVG converters if inkscape is not the right tool for this exercise. Natively creating SVG is not an option at this point. Pranav

Hi, I need a sanity check from you, my fellow Inkscape users, if you don't mind: Draw a 1 px straight vertical line using the pen tool, holding down Ctrl to make sure it's straight. Is there any way to do this such that the line does not end up on an X value that is X.5, where X is any integer? Same for a 1 px straight horizontal line - no matter where I click, no matter which snapping options I enable, that sucker will only land on Y values of something + 0.5. Is this right? Is there anyway to avoid this? I've trained myself to manually go in and delete the 0.5 and not even think about it, but I'm trying to explain something to a new Inkscape user and I feel quite silly explaining my odd way of going in to the X and Y coordinate boxes and erasing the .5 off the end of the number to her. I've experienced that unexpected default font change a lot of times and I think there is some operation that's mistakenly setting it. Maybe it's copying and pasting styles or something. I'm not sure since I couldn't find a way to reproduce it consistently. My 2 cents.

Export a single Group in a page to PDF

Hi All, I am using inkscape to draw lots of small diagrams to include in my thesis. Is there some way I can export only a single group on my inkscape svg to a PDF? Currently I do this by right clicking on the group and memorizing the group id number. Then I go to "Save as" and select pdf, enter the filename and in the PDF export dialog I type in the group number to limit the export to only that element. Is there a way to make this easier? If I could somehow select a group and then export the currently selected thing, that would be *much* more convenient that memorizing 5 digit numbers every time I want to export something. Roshan

Default font selection

Is it possible to force Inkscape to use a certain font as the default in the Text tool? My install seems to have defaulted recently to "IM Fell Flowers" which is a handsome decorative set of woodcut flowers and other printer's decorations, but not something useful on a day to day basis. Former it used something basic and readable like Liberation Sans. I've had a quick rummage through the various Preferences windows and the documentation, and can't find anything relevant. SVG font feature

I am trying to collect an number of characters to generate a font file (for oracle bone script). I am importing (inkscape) SVG files into inkscape to assign the path to a particular character. My characters are usually 700 x 1000 inkscape units large. In the Preview Text some are the right size, some are substantially smaller than expected, looking more like a superscript. The characters in the attached screenshot are all the same size on the inkscape page. Is this a problem with the preview feature, or a problem with the SVG font feature? Thank you for any help. Can't change color of a clone

Hi, I'm using Inkscape 0.48, ubuntu 11.10. I can't change the color of a clone without unlinking it. I tried to reproduce the steps here : http://maururu.net/2007/using-clones-in-inkscape/ But Inkscape don't let me change the color. I can change the blur level, the opacity, but not the color, or the stroke.

Setting the Coordinates of Gradient Nodes

Blending one photo into another.

Before I spend a lot of time trying the impossible: In Gimp it is possible to take two overlapping bitmap images (like photos) and blend one into the other using a gradient on the topmost bitmap? Inkscape has the ability to blend two vector objects in this manner. But what about bitmaps? If I vectorize the top image will that make it possible? (Unfortunately vectorized photos often come up huge.) John Culleton

Arrow end markers and stroke length

Hello, I use Inkscape to draw diagrams, however I have some problems to draw nice looking arrow end markers. The problem is that when I have an arrow pointing to a box, the arrow gets overlapped to the contour of the box. That can be solved quite easily defining a marker which has its anchor point at the proper distance from the end of the stroke to which it is applied (such that the cuspid of the arrow is stroke width / 2 from the end of the stroke segment it is applied to). However, this solution leaves a small segment of the stroke past the arrow marker (see atachment, I would like to get rid of the small red segment on the right of the black arrow). The "manual" solution is to draw the connecting stroke lines a little shorter than required to connect the boxes. However, this is very tedious and error prone to do, and makes the connection tool useless. There is a way to obtain what I have in mind? Does the plugin interface allow to define new tools, like the connector tool, in which I can embed the behavior I would like? Should I look into extending the connection tool? Is there a Linux distro that includes Inkscape 48.2? I have the usual trouble getting all the libraries installed on slackware. The libraries are there but Inkscape compile doesn't find them. newbie question...

I have a CG rendering that I want to create a jagged edge along one side - like this: cid:image002.png@...2944... (well, this shows 2 sides; and I will just need the right side.) I created this example with Snagit and I am usually content with the results. But today I am in need of a much larger image: ~10k x 6.6k (pixels) and Snagit just can't cut it. I can create a path that sorta looks like what I want, but I am not sure how to use layers and transparency, etc. to get what I need. This might be a lot to ask through a forum. If so, please feel free to direct me to a tutorial, or some other lesson / resource. Any hints or tips? Thanks a lot! -Nate
