[Linux] Inkscape 0.48 ruler graphic artifacts

I currently am only experiencing this on 0.48 Ubuntu 10.10 64bit: Whenever I move the mouse cursor across the horizontal or vertical rulers, the rulers fill with the ruler point (triangle) artifacts. I've posted a screenshot here: http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/3473/screenshotinkscape1.png Same machine (laptop) running 0.48 in WinXP (at the same time) on a VMWare virtual machine does not experience the same. Screenshot here: http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/8378/inkscape2winxp.png Nor do I experience this on my Ubuntu 10.4 32bit machine with 0.48. Can anyone verify that the same is occurring on their 10.10 64bit Inkscape 0.48, or please point me to an already filed bug? Inkscape has a setting to control the number of significant digits (I think the default is eight). Look under "Inkscape Preferences --> SVG output". SVG syntax allows lengths to be specified with one of the following units: px, em, ex, pt, pc, cm, mm, and in. The SVG spec defines 1in=90px. Thus one thousandth of an inch can be spcified as 0.09, .09px, 0.001in, or 0.0254000mm. INkscape 0.48 I have a string of ocrb10 text over some bar code. I got everything right except it is in bold. I want to get it in normal. I tried selecting the text string (little arrows all around) and using shift control T. I get the text window but "apply" is grayed out. I can put in italic and then in normal . ai to png -> error in the blend mode

Hi, I'm trying to automate the transformation of adobe illustrator files to png. I have problems with some object that have a blending mode to multiply. When importing in inkscape, these objects have a blend mode to normal. I can send you an exemple of an ai file that show this problem if you need. The blending mode is supported correctly (If I change it manually, it works). I can"t see this bug in the database. I use inkscape 0.48 Thanks, Benoit

vector emboss effect

Hello i am trying to make an emboss text effect in inkscape. my current method is to make the text duplicate and offset it, make one black, and one white blur put it on a new layer, and set the layer to lighten, to get the highlight edge. repeat, with white on top, and darken to get the shadow edge http://www.hep.manchester.ac.uk/u/sam/pub/emboss.svg there seems to be an emboss filter option, but that converts to a bitmap. is there a script of filter that could do the above steps. or is there a simpler way to achieve the effect. thanks sam

can't type 'ç'

Hi, all. I use Inkscape 0.48 in a MacBook with OSX 10.6.5 (Snow Leopard). My X11 server is XQuartz 2.3.6 (xorg-server 1.4.2-apple56). My system is configured in Portuguese (Brazilian) language with an US-International keyboard. Character set is UTF-8 for this matter. In any other application accented characters and cedilla works fine. On Inkscape, however, I can't type 'ç' (c with cedilla). When I try to do so the Inkscape prints an accented c: 'ć'. Others characters are fine, this happens only with cedilla. In this kind of keyboard the accents are produced using two keys sequence. The a acute (á) is produced typing single-quote followed by a. The same is used to type an e acute (é), single-quote followed by e. To type a c with cedilla (ç) the same single-quote followed by c works in any software and system (I also use Inkscape 0.48 on a Windows XP machine) but in the Mac it is printing c with an acute accent (ć). Ideally there would be different people for most of these - at worst we could get away with maybe 4? If anyone has any better ideas for shots already included, they're more than welcome to make suggestions. I think it would be useful to have an official Inkscape channel - then any videos created for the website could go there (promos, interviews, tutorials, etc). Youtube has a huge audience, and could draw more traffic to the Inkscape website.

Doublesided Print Alignment

I have two inkscape drawings, each have two 360 degree protractor wheels on them; exact same size. I am attempting to print drawing 1, turn the paper (it's doublesided photo paper) and then print drawing 2, and get the prints to align properly. Purpose is so that I do not have to print singlesided, paste the wheels together & then laminate. The project calls for printing all 4 wheels (2 ea from each inkscape drawing) back-to-back so that only two wheels are necessary for laminating. I have tried moving the wheels individually (on drawing 1 only so that drawing 2 is the base) by x & y pixels, but so far haven't found the proper combination to get them to align exactly with the backside of drawing 2. I'm running out of ink & paper with each attempt. Drawing 1: wheel 1 x 120 y 560 px wheel 2 x 250 y 150 px Drawing 2: wheel 1 x 240 y 570 px wheel 2 x 140 y 130 Note the above are just samples and are not the closest alignment(s) when printed. That is just what I have on the currently opened drawings at this time. I can of course move each drawings wheels individually to position. But in order to test I need to print each on each side in color. So, I wonder if there is some magical x/y number/method I can use instead of trial & error (mostly error). Printed paper is US Letter (8.5x11"). Memory sucked away... why?

Hi all, I am a new user. When I run Inkscape on Windows Vista, it starts fast, then runs slower and slower. If I open task manager and look at processes, I can see the Memory (Private Working Set) - and as I watch it just keeps increasing. When I start Inkscape, it is using about 70 MB of ram. I load the picture I am editing and it jumps up to 80 MB - still ok. But as soon as I start editing the picture, the memory starts growing - often by 6 MB at a time, until it is using over 1 GB of ram. At that point, I have to exit Inkscape and then either restart the computer or wait about 10-15 min before it actually exists (at least according to task manager.) All the other programs I watch in task manager have the memory used grow and shrink as they perform various tasks. Only Inkscape keeps growing and by such a large value. And the higher the memory used, the longer it takes for things to happen. Even if I do the same thing (move a group of lines, etc.) Any idea of what setting I might change to fix this? Just Me

Placement of Toolbars

Is there anyway to change the placement of the toolbars? I would like them all to be on the left. Wide carriage HP755CM install on Windows Vista

I found an old HP 755CM 36" wide format designjet for $75 at our local Technology Recycling Center. HP officially doesn't have a driver for this designjet anymore. But the HP driver file - '*HP Designjet HP-GL/2 driver for Windows and AutoCAD 2000 - AutoCAD 2005'*-- *pl532en.exe - * for Windows Server 2000, Windows 2000, and Windows XP, will work for Vista and Windows 7. To set it up: Connect the printer to your ethernet network. If your internet router is set up as a DNS server, it will get an IP immediately. If you don't have DNS on your internal router, then you may need to download HP's Jetdirect control software to access it and assign it an IP address. Once an IP is assigned, execute the *pl532en.exe *file to a directory you make just for this driver. Run 'Add printer', select network printer, search for new printer, and the IP address of the new printer should show up. Cancel, then run 'Add printer' again but select *local* printer and use the IP address as the name, and the printer port will auto-create. When asked for the driver, browse to your directory so it can find the .inf file. The 755CM will be listed. I saw posts which stated that this file worked with Windows 7, and I read other posts that there's a 64bit version of this file which will work with 64bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7 as well. This designjet will print on clear film, coated bond, heavy coated bond, adhesive vinyl, and others. Will also print on 8.5" x 11" in landscape orientation. I'll let you know when I get it hooked up with Linux. - Susan

If you have a different Ubuntu version, and this workaround works, please post. l had web searched for info, found some advice, but nothing yielded results. Then checked the bug listings for Ubuntu. Ubuntu guru *Stefan Bader* determined that the current simple workaround is to install input backport modules using the Ubuntu Software Centre. Select '*Backported input drivers for generic kernel image'* --> name of the file is “*linux-backports-modules-input-maverick-generic*“. Install, then reboot. Wacom’s *MyPaint* (also installed through the Ubuntu Software Centre) listed devices as ‘disabled, screen, window’,which is a bit confusing but I made no changes. The tablet worked perfectly. *Gimp 2.6* Edit/Preferences/InputDevices/ConfigureExtendedInputDevices listed The Wacom Bamboo Finger Pad, Finger Touch, Pen eraser, Pen stylusd but they were marked as disabled. Again I made no changes, and the tablet worked perfectly. Last test – opened* Inkscape 0.48*, selected ‘Draw Free Hand Lines’ – tablet worked fine. - Susan

Inkscape/Synfig animation team-up example

Hi folks! For a contest entry, I used Inkscape in conjunction with Synfig to make a 30-second animated commercial (of sorts). I did it in two days, just before the deadline, so it isn't exactly perfect, but it turned out reasonably okay. Synfig imports svg files pretty well now, so I was able to create all of my elements in Inkscape (and thus take advantage of its really nice drawing and painting abilities), then take them into Synfig for rapid (though in this case limited) animation. Plus, it was all done on Ubuntu, so it was a complete open source project. If there are any coders on the list who are just dying for more stuff to do (it could happen!), Synfig could really use some help as it doesn't yet have anything close to the user base that Inkscape enjoys. I hope, though, that this little contest entry shows the potential that Synfig has and, especially, what a great combo Synfig and Inkscape can be. Cheers! Matt Jordan

Extensions slow / crashing Inkscape

I have produced the O-scape extensions to enable the creation of Orienteering maps using Inkscape. I am producing a map of an urban area, which is larger than A3 paper size at 1:4,000. The SVG file is currently 2,126KB with over 3,200 objects (and counting) and has three linked (not embedded) image files; two maps and aerial imagery from Google Maps. Most of the map has been produced using standard Inkscape functionality for lines and shapes. Now, though, when I want to convert a line to a special line type (such as a tagged line representing a fence), the extension runs very slowly and sometimes crashes Inkscape. Sometimes Inkscape 'loses' the aerial imagery, instead displaying a low res image saying 'Linked image not found' at which point I can save and exit normally. Other times, Inkscape crashes with the following message - 'GLib-Error **:gmem.c:175: Failed to allocate 134217728 bytes aborting...'. I've tried running other extensions, not just my O-scape ones, with the same results. I'm running Inkscape in Windows Vista Home Premium on an Intel Core2 6600 @ 2.40GHz computer and have recently increased the available RAM from 2GB to 4GB. Am I reaching the limit of Inkscape? Is there some way that I can alter my set-up to a) make extensions fun faster, and b) stop the extensions losing the linked files or crashing Inkscape? Jon

Dear all: For those interested in having a say in the future development of JessyInk, you can download an alpha of version 2.0.0 from the project website: http://code.google.com/p/jessyink/downloads/detail?name=JessyInk_2_0_0_alph… Below you can find the release announcement: JessyInk 2.0.0 alpha 1 released! This is a development snapshot of version 2 of JessyInk. The main purpose of this release is to give the community an opportunity to provide feedback on the new design of JessyInk. This version is a re-implementation of the code in a highly modular way. The user interface is now based on graphical objects that can be copied and grouped for installation of the scripts and assignment of effects and views. So far only very basic functionality is provided. However, further features will be added in future versions leading up to version 2.0.0. Getting Inkscape to work as a template editor

I have a design that is created in Inkscape, its a poster that has visual, and informational elements to it. The information bits are subject to change. Is there a way that I can get Inkscape to pull the data from a datasource [i.e. XML]? Is a tr [preprocessing] the only way to go with this? The task I am attempting to accomplish is to create a shell script that'll accept a specific dataset to pass onto the template, use inkscape to transform the inkscape resulting file into a PDF. etc -Steven

Crash when moving nodes

Greetings, All! [*cheery wave*] I hope this is the proper place to ask. If not, please direct me to the correct list. I've been using Inkscape on Kubuntu for several years. Most of my previous applications have been minor things such as business cards, posters and photo collections. Recently, I've started working on some cardstock scale modeling projects. These involve lots of pattern files from photographs. Just the last few days, I've had to restart Inkscape dozens of times. It crashes when I have an irregular shape with a pattern fill and try to move nodes. The second or third node I move causes the program to report an error and then crash. I've found a few work arounds so I can complete my project, but it has been a pain. Here's my current setup. - AMD processor, Asus MB, 4Gb RAM, 1.5Tb HD, NVIDIA (onboard MB), 24" LCD monitor. - Kubuntu 10.04 with all current patches. - Inkscape vs 0.47 Thanks in advance for any assistance. *Happy Holidays!* -- E.C.
