Vinyl cutters, Direct control, Suggested models

Hey Everyone There is a discussion taking place on the developers list right now pertaining to adding control of Vinyl Cutters to Inkscape. It is in the very early stages, the developers are not sure whether to add direct support to Inkscape or to an upstream printing application such as CUPS. Although I am on the developers list I have contributed precisely nothing to Inkscape, so I can hardly call myself a developer. I don't know what is the best way to approach these issues but I feel confident that I can decipher the command set used to control a cutter. I would like to do so and then turn this over to our talented developers. I would like to buy a cutter for this purpose. What would be the most ideal model to start with? I am hoping to spend under $500 U.S for this. Once we determine a good model to start with, I will likely search for a used one. If anyone has a popular model that they no longer need perhaps I could purchase it from you, could you please post the model number in this thread? I am short of money this month but I should be ready sometime in July or August. Thanks in advance-Patrick

inkscape shortcuts on non-qwerty keyboard

I searched the archives for some solution to my problem, but couldn't find any, so if I overlooked it, please point me to the appropriate thread. I'm using inkscape on KDE with a qwertz (german) keyboard layout. Some shortcuts, like "#" to toggle the grid, don't work, as the corresponding key differs from the US qwerty layout. As the default.xml contains the right bindings (didn't change anything there), I think it's gtk that doesn't get tha mapping right. Is there some viable way to adapt the gtk settings to my keyboard layout? Of course I could learn the US layout for the shortcuts or alter the keybindings in the default.xml, but both workarounds seem to be a bit of an overkill just to use the default shortcuts. And I'm not quite fond of installing a whole Gnome just to have a Control Center where I can change the keyboard layout. thanks in advance

Clipped bitmap --> closed path filled with patterh

I have been producing a series of diagrams illustrating the effect of the various rendering intents. I found an SVG of the CIE 1930 chromaticity diagram and dismantled it to provide a background for my purposes. The familiar (closed) horseshoe shape is clipped from a rectangular bitmap of the radial colours of the visual spectrum: going around the outside border anti-clockwise, the rays from the white point (centre) to the border are R, Y, G, C, B, M and back to R (i.e. RGB and CMY interleaved). Trouble is this doesn't translate to PDF via the Cairo processor, or to PS and PDF via Ghostscript. The clipping of the bitmap is lost and the the border path just appears as an object on top of the full rectangular bitmap. The text labels are aliased in a very ugly way when I try to output to PNG. So I thought to convert the bitmap to a pattern, then fill the horseshoe path with the pattern. No joy. The bitmap turns into a slightly smaller rectangular pattern that is divided into four unequal quadrants, that is, it is tiled. It looks nothing like the demonstration on page 190 (204 of 341) of //Inkscape: Guide to a Vector Drawing Program//. This shows a picture of a 1920s couple getting into an early MG sports car, then the same picture used as a fill in a circular object, then the pattern translated to change the details included in the fill. If that pic was mine, after changing to a pattern, the pattern would be smaller than the pixmap, and part of the RH and Bottom sides of the pixmap would appear as thin bands extending the LH and Top sides of the pixmap, i.e. the couple and sports car cut up in a way where it would be impossible to show the full graphic as a pattern fill in any object. What I really wanted was the bitmap to turn into a single tile pattern, i.e. a repetition of 1 both vertically and horizontally. Then I could fill the horseshoe border with the radial colours. It didn't look anything like the pattern on page 189 top. So what should I have done? PDF open: problem with one musical font.

Hi! First post in this forum, but long time inkscape user now, even for basic things. I have a problem. Im printing from a musical score program to pdf. I want to open that PDF in Inkscape (0.46, last version), but even the preview of the document is fine in the import dialog, when Inkscape open it, the font is not showed properly. The font is called "SToccata" and is in the windows\fonts folder properly installed, but Inkscape dont show it in the fonts menu. I tried the workaround of the faq for issues with fonts (even it says that .46 solved the problem). Beyond that, the font is embedded in the pdf. Hi First greetings all - am new to the list but avid Inkscape (ab)user and advocate for a few years now using it in most of my graphic and web design work. Had a question someone on list might be able to help me with. I'm aware of kerning individual letters in Inkscape, but is there a way of applying global kerning to a block of text (so that each letter in the group undergoes the same amount of kerning?) Filter effects

Are there any examples on using filter effects that use Background Color/Background Alpha/Fill Paint/Stroke Paint? I've tried to use these in my filters but they don't seem to do what the SVG specs says they should but maybe I'm just using them incorrectly. Brian Vanderburg II

Export EPS with transparent background

Using Inkscape trunk: I have a logo I maintain in a master SVG file with document properties backgrount white #FFFFFFFF. For a transparent copy, I manually save with the document-properties background transparent #FFFFFF00. For the transparent version, PNG export works fine, but Encapsulated Poststscript EPS always renders a white background when pasted into OpenOffice-2.3. OpenOffice-2.3 does not seem to support SVG 'insert Picture'. How do I create an OpenOffice-compatible vector format with transparency? Thanks.

Startup problem in OS X

Hi, I've upgraded my computer and reinstalled Inkscape but it doesn't seem to run. I haven't installed the OS X developer kit, but X11 was installed when I setup Matlab. I have installed the latest version of XQuartz (v2.1.4). When I click on the Inkscape icon I get the "While Inkscape is open, its windows can be displayed... The first time this version of Inkscape is run it may take several minutes before the main window is displayed while font caches are built." After I click "OK" nothing happens. I've waited, rebooted and started again and there has been no display of the main window. Does anyone have a suggestion for how I can fix this? Thanks! James

Drawing streets

Hi, I'm currently drawing a map, and I'm stuck with on how to draw the streets properly. The streets should consist of parallel lines with a defined fill color and a somewhat darker stroke color. I already read what Tavmjong wrote in his book: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths-Creating.html#Paths-Bezi… Basically, I understand the approach and got it to work drawing one comparatively simple stroke, but how do I get the lines being exactly parallel and smooth? I only manage to get it right with a lot of tweaking, but this way too time-consuming when I want to draw an entire map. Can anybody help? TIA, Claus

I'm proud to present the last gimpgallery release, 0.8. You find it at http://test.gimpgallery.net As you may already know gimpgallery is a project of a gimp website especially meant to host and show images and to share xcf sources too. It is the first attempt to create a community of gimp artists, giving them a suitable space for their works, projects and ideas. Gimpgallery is made with drupal, the well known opensource cms and we started developing it from inkscapegallery (http://inkscapegallery.net). It was already a good social network software, with most of the features you're getting used to but we worked a lot to make it even better. This new release presents many improvements since the last announce and a better cross browsing. We're supporting firefox 2, opera 9x, ie7 and ie6 (there are a couple of disclaimer for ie users). There's an issue with konqueror, instead, due to a javascript not supporting it. We fixed a lot of issues with internet explorer, as you may see on the "random gallery" at http://test.gimpgallery.net/slideshow If you're a gimp user try it out, every gimp artist now has its own profile, gallery and slideshow We made a new home page (http://test.gimpgallery/home) and we are trying to make things work like we wish to. gimpgallery is an image gallery website, it doesn't produce news or tutorials, so we took some rss feeds from the best internet resources about gimp and we placed in the home page, giving infos and links. Indeed, we're trying to build a network of gimp websites, everyone with its own attitude, so we will link gimptutorials.net for didactics, gimp.org and gimpusers.com for the news and we would like them to link us when a user will look for images. In the home page you see an arrangement for a new feature, an interview with a gimp artist that we might change every week or something like that, it is called "a few words with..." There's a fully customized submission and registration skin, that is quite new in the drupal world. We must test it so we hope you to help us registering and posting many contents. We have the forum where to inform us about bugs or software's bad behaviors . I don't want to annoy you with a long description (even because there would be too much to say :-) i just ask you to spend ten minutes of your time to browse it and i ask you to do this deeply, because there's a lot to see. Don't mind the images actually, 'cause we have only a few images really coming from gimp artists, some others come from inkscapegallery and they stand only for test. I hope you to like it as it is, but we still have the chance to make some changes it the layout, we focused on features actually and we hope them to really meet the requirements. SVG opening problem

Hello, I use Inkscape Apr 1 2008 on Windows XP. I also use the program Geogebra, and I want to export my works to SVG and then edit them in Inkscape. But any exported SVG file I get can not be opened by Inkscape, it says "Failed to load the requested file". But on the other hand my Firefox displays them well. A teacher at the school came to me (I was the technology coordinator for the district at the time) and she said that the kids wanted to have a yearbook class like the one present at the standard high school. Of course there was no funding for it. I set them up with Inkscape (running both on Windows on the few standard PC's they had and the Linux thin clients that drove the primary computer lab) and Tav's book, gave them a couple into lessons, and off they went. A semester later they published a yearbook, I believe the first one the alternative HS had ever done. It was small, maybe 20 pages. In my opinion though it looked just as good, if not better than, the one turned out by the students at the standard HS, without all the templates and support provided by the yearbook publisher! newbie question

Hi, I am able to make some nice drawing.Great! I have 2 grouped objects I want to superpose, but without the transparence. I want to overlap it (like a normal ms paint program would) . However I tried using paths ... with these grouped objects and do not manage to do it. What is the way to accomplish this ? Best Regards Steph

Imported PNG file, appears blurred

Eraser "Polar bear in a snowstorm" fixed

Just a quick FYI... I fixed the "polar bear in a snowstorm" problem with the eraser tool, in which it was always using the last style used and would be hard to see. The preferences are now in the UI, and the defaults should be set up nicer.

arrow head pointing wrong way

Hi, I am trying to draw a simple line, from left to right, with an arrow on the end, like this: -----------------> I make the line, go to Fill and Stroke properties, seld an end marker and I get something like this --------------------^ (the arrow head is pointing upwards to the end of the line). what is going on... you would think it would point away from the end of the line, but it is point at the end of line, perpendicular to it. regards, Rich

Perspective to multi colored composed objects

In the attached SVG/screenshot you'll find three objects. The first is composed by multiple objects of the same color, combinated into a single one in order to apply perspective - which was succesful as seen below it. Now, the other two are composed by different colored objects and I want to apply perspective just as they are. However, that can't be done on multiple objects, and when combinating or blending all composing parts merge and turn the same color. Any solution? Please help. How to upgrade to Inkscape 0.46
