Hi, I tried changing the pref to Graphite and opened Inkscape for the first time. It starts up with a dark grey screen, with what appears to be a halftone screen, upon typing the Inkscape app opens. When I close Inkscape the grey screen reappears which I have to force quit to return to the OS. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Tracking a path causes a crash

I was just over at Launchpad to see if this was a general and known issue but only found a post about the tracking function being too tricky to use: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/169006 I'm also not 100% clear if a still have a beta or an actual 0.46 release. An Ubuntu user, I added the Gutsy repos mentioned on the Inkscape home page in an announcement dated March24, 2008, but the 0.46 version installed has a build date of March 11, 2008. Anyway, with all of that said, Inkscape crashes when I try to use the tracking function. It appears to crash regardless of my choice for a guide: shape, calligraphy stroke, or whatever. Because of my uncertainly as to what version I actually have, I'm hesitant to make a report. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Matt

Hi, For Windows users, there is a new pre-release version of Inkscape 0.46 available on Sourceforge from here; http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=93438&package_id=9911… Please note, this is a *Windows only* pre-release test version, as there were some bugs that could not be sorted out prior to the regular 0.46.0 release. If you've already seen this, a slight error has been fixed in 0.46pre4-2 since yesterday. This version is quite stable, but please it for any further bugs and report to https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/ If there are no other major problems, we will release 0.46.0 early next week. Note, there are some known issues that won't be fixed for 0.46.0, as per the readme; * (LP: #180890) Blend modes do not work correctly over transparent backgrounds. A workaround is to place an opaque rectangle underneath the bottom-most layer. * (LP # 202704) Blur and other filters are very slow when applied to an object with transform= attribute with rotation or skew. To avoid this slowdown, either do not rotate/skew objects you use with filters, or apply filters only to paths (but not shapes to text) because paths, by default, get no transform= attribute when you rotate or skew them. * Windows printing has two known issues. In both cases the workaround is to print to bitmap (Print -> Rendering -> Bitmap). - (LP # 205732) Blurred objects are misaligned when printing. - (LP # 208217) Masked objects disappear when printing. Thank you for providing this fine application. Inkscape is my favorite toy and tool. Good to see the winner of the "About Inkscape" contest live. Thanks for the attention to detail in the latest version. Example: in the past, it's been a bit of trouble to find the python/xml package that supports some of the effects. Now, the effects>generate from path>interpolate error message provides the installation command. And the tool takes a break until the package is installed. I can hardly wait to try out all the new goodies. Your effort and creativity are inspiring.

Hi, I downloaded the latest version (Leopard) Mac OS X and installed it in my applications. When I try to start Inkscape a dialog box pops up about the start up and loading fonts, I click on OK, on the menu bar Inkscape appears with the only options being to hide the app. The app never starts, I opened X11 and it is functioning. I really would like to get this app running as I need the vector support for sign designing. Any help appreciated. Making a poster with Inkscape

Depending on the structure of the poster, in particular amount of text, use of external images, Scribus may be better suited but Inkscape could be your best tool for design of individual elements, while GIMP may also join the fray for some specific tasks. From a study of your project in the marketing design phase (what the poster will look like), you will be able to think up the best workflow, and which tools will design which part of the final output. Hello everyone, This question would and should fall under the "very general" category: I have been using Inkscape for a while - but only to make small and simple graphics (I am a PhD student and I need to create figures every now and then). I now am faced with the daunting task of creating a poster. I have never done this before. Does anyone have any tips on how to make a powerful, yet beautiful and simple poster using Inkscape? In particular, if you have made a poster using Inkscape before, could you share your experiences with me? Any input would be helpful given that I know nothing about graphic design. I apologise in advance to those of you to whom this email doesn't apply. Thanks!

Announcement: dxf2svg extension

Hi all, I want to announce a dxf2svg extension as part of the Kabeja (http://sf.net/projects/kabeja) project. The project itself is target as standalone Java application/ library for parsing, processing and converting DXF. But it could be also used as dxf2svg tool. The Inkscape extension can be build as pure Java extension (needs a running Java runtime environment), native compiled extension (using gcj) or as .NET extension (needs .NET runtime environment on Windows or Mono on Linux/Unix and IKVM). Kabeja supports most of the 2D part of DXF now, but ignores at the moment the 3D part. If you consider that 300 dpi is enough for the images that you see in offset printed magazines, you'll find that you're working in too high resolution. You can even low the resolution more if the viewer distance will be more than a meter. Usually, a 200 dpi print is more than enough for a sign that will be viewed at 2 meters. If you view the artwork at more distance you can use 150, 100, even 75 dpi. I'd recommend you to just try to print in your inkjet printer a part of the file using, for instance, 300 dpi and watch the print out at the distance that you'll watch the real stuff. If the detail is enough, then you don't need to raise the resolution that much. Usually the resolution of printers/plotters express how fine are the ink drops that the machine can achieve, but it doesn't necessarily mean that you need to create a file in that resolution. Of course I'm talking about images (bitmap images, complex artwork with effects, transparency, blending, etc.) If you need to print small text the resolution counts, although is recommended to keep small text as vectors, to prevent aliasing related artifacts. The printer will use its best resolution for vectorial data. But even in that situation, if you have to print rasterized text, more than 600 dpi is quite excessive. hth, Gez.

You can always send a RGB PNG file to the print shop, but it's not a good idea in most of the cases. It depends on how good/new is the print shop equipment and how much the guy that makes the pre-press work knows. A new CtP wouldn't have too much problems managing RGB files. Dear SourceForge, Having created 3 .SVG files in InkScape and saved them as PDF Output files, I've opened the PDFs in InkScape and they appear and display just fine. However, when opening those same PDFs in Adobe Acrobat Reader 8, I see that the graphics I created now show I disjointed and out of position. How is this so? What happened on my saving each file as PDF Output to cause those effects? How will this situation be resolved so that all my vector graphics all display in Acrobat EXACTLY as I had designed? Please let me knonw, ASAP, as I need to need someone 3 PDFs soon. Regards, Dean Clarke

Hi, I don't know if I need to make a pdf document with 1200dpi, but I've got a problem working with Inkscape 0.45.1 (march 2007) and some virtual pdf printers (PdfCreator, Bullzip, pdf995 and primopdf). I made a work (a cover for a price-book, greather then the A3 page format) with a gradient in background, images used as pattern (in circle shapes), text as curves, a lettering and it's blurred copy. (here a low-res : http://i26.tinypic.com/b3wpeb.jpg) Planning for a plotter output printing I made a page with 3 copies of work and sent the file to the service. Usually I send a pdf file made with PdfCreator, with the default 600 dpi resolution. All right the pdf printer made the usual good job, except for a little noise on the blur effect and on the gradient, a little bit pixelized (concentric shapes) but not so evident. The problem went trying to do a 1200Dpi pdf output and a B1 format page. I think that with a 1200 Dpi pdf I can obtain a better gredient, instead I had got a lot of problems and errors with the 1200Dpi resolution. 1) 25 min. spooling with a 6Gb file 2) a Pdf with two blank pages: fist portrait and second landscape, with the message text : ERROR: rangecheck OFFENDING COMMAND: string STACK: 100200 /mystring 24 64 33400 3) Sometimes, after spooling, there is no output in file, printing task simply disappears :-) I tried with different pdf printers too and with different page formats and with simplified objects, but with large documents it's always the same result. Of course I tried too with other graphic programs (an old copy of corel draw ver. 9, and of freehand ver. 10) with the same elements (gradients and so on) and b1 page but without any problem. At the end, I exported the work in a png file at 1200Dpi. 5 hours of computing but really a wonderful 130 Mb picture (47244 X 33402 pixel), with a perfect gradient and a perfect blur. In your opinion can I send it to the service ? Ross (Windows Xp Sp2, Pentium P4-3Ghz, 1Gb Ram)
