Inkscape 1.4.4 Release Candidate ================================ Inkscape 1.4.4rc is now available for testing for all three supported operating systems (Linux, macOS, Windows)! For the first time, we also provide packages for Windows on Arm. Being a pre-release, this version is not intended for production use, but to help us smooth out any issues that should not show up in the actual release which is due in less than 2 weeks from now. You can download it from: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.4.4rc BUGFIX and MAINTENANCE RELEASE ------------------------------ Inkscape 1.4.4 will be a maintenance and bugfix release, which brings you 20 crash fixes, more than 25 bug fixes and performance improvements, a couple small new features, and will come with more than 25 updated translations. See the release notes draft for more information: https://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/Release_notes/1.4.4 Like the previous version, Inkscape 1.4.4 will also be a 'bridge release' in the sense that it can be used to convert the planned Inkscape 1.5 multipage file format to the pre-1.5 multipage format. Versions lower than Inkscape 1.4.3 will not be able to interpret pages created in Inkscape versions 1.5 and upwards. Opening a document in Inkscape 1.4.3 and saving it will convert it to the current ('old') page format. Background: While the 'old' format of pages in Inkscape is a custom addition that only works in Inkscape, the new format will make use of the svg:view element, which is standardized and can work in other SVG viewers, too. KNOWN ISSUES ____________ * On macOS, if Inkscape has been started from the command line, extensions will not work (both in the graphical user interface as well as when only using the Inkscape commandline). Many import / export file formats provided by Python extensions are also affected. This is a security feature added in 1.4.3 for official macOS .dmg files, which fixes CVE-2025-15523. Hello from Belgium, I have just installed inkscape 1.4.2. I used the software on a big screen connected to my notebook. Now I'am working on the native screen. I opened a document and I want to open the properties of the document but I can see the window. I put it on the left of my big screen and now it is out the area of the small screen. The window doesn't see that the size of the screen has changed. I hope you understand me. JC

Trying to open an old .ai file

Dear all, I am running Inkscape 1.4 (e7c3feb1, 2024-10-09) under Mac OS 15.3.2 (Sequoia). Since moving to Sequoia I can’t open my own legacy .ai files. Inkscape simply says “unable to load”. The file opens in jumpshare.com <http://jumpshare.com/>, more or less, but I can’t do anything with it there. Any thoughts about how to get access to these old files? Cheers, Dave

SVGs from Inkscape do not display correctly in Firefox or EoG

Hi there, I already asked at my employee company (Red Hat) and Ask Fedora, so far got no useful answers. I even created a bug on Fedora (link later in this message) I'm a long time Fedora user and occasional Inkscape user. My main use of inkscape is post-processing of SVG files generated by online tools such as google slides. On Fedora 40 and Inkscape 1.3.2 I find that Firefox and Google Chome cannot render SVGs from Inkscape. They display an empty/white page. And Eye of Gnome displays the same files as an empty transparent background. Issues and workarounds I found on google, such as exporting to SVG 1.1 and configuring preferences related to paths on SVG 1.1 didn't make any difference. To check that I was not crazy, I created a VM with Inkscape 1.1.1 (from RHEL 9) and files from that, strarting from the same google slide, work well on both the older Firefox in that VM and the newer Firefox on my Fedora machine. It seems to be an issue from Inkscape itself. It may be someting specific to SVG files creates from Google Slides. Funny thing is that, a few months ago, SVGs from google wouldn't display in web browser, and would work only after cleaning from Inkscape. Now it's the opposite: the files from google do work as-is, but stop working after cleaning from Inkscape. I opened 2313610 - SVG files from Inkscape don't render in a web browser (nor eog) 4 [1] on Fedora bugs about this issue. It contains two test files, one the export from google slides, other after edits by Inkscape. On the Fedora forums, someone proposed a proprietary tool, Boxy SVG. It can take the file from google slides and make edits, and the results from it work on both EoG and Firefox. But it lacks many features I'm used to from Inkscape, and I'd prefer staying with open source software. And Boxy fails to display files from Inkscape, displaying an empty write rectangle, just like firefox and chrome do. So is this a bug or regression with Inkscape itself? Or something specific to Fedora's build? I got the same issues with both the Flatpack and the RPMs from Fedora. Debian inkscape current stable repo?

Hi there community of my favorite vector graphics editor, I have made the switch to Linux Mint Debian Edition lately, and found that it, naturally, does not accept ppa style packet sources, and the native debian apt repo sadly offers only an outdated version of inkscape. Using the AppImage works, but has disadvantages, as it is not possible to just dock it to the taskbar under Cinnamon, and when I write my own .desktop file for it, still it doesn't group well on the taskbar, and it does not automatically upgrade to the current stable version like using the ubuntu ppa does. Is there a debian-style package source for current stable? I couldn't find one. Other suggestions on solving the above issues? Cheers, Tobias

Question related to path and path ends

Hello, I am not an artist at all, and find inskcape very convinient for doing schematics explaining processes, block diagrams etc. I have 2 questions related to paths and path ends. - When trying to align a path (with an arrow at the end) with another box, I always end-up with the path end "glueing" itself to the box's border. I would have expected that the arrow's end glues itself instead of the path itself, else you are obliged to manualy move the path backwards by a few pixels. - Sometimes I want to "extend" a path with another one. Imagine I have a path going from left to right, with an arrow on its right end. If I want to add another path on its left end, I can do this, for instance starting from the left hand, and going upwards elsewhere. When I do so, at the end, the arrow ends-up being at the new and, instead of staying on the right end, as originaly. I suspect this is because on the original path I had the arrow end being at the "final" end (compared to be beginning), and that by extending the path, I changed the "final" end, the arrow setting itself on this new end instead of staying where it was before. I wanted to share with you these 2 things I am used to now, as they could be frustrating for a new user. Last, thanks for introducing pages in the recent Inkscape version !!! I suggest access to the text tool be placed in the Text submenu

Hi all, In the next version, I suggest access to the text tool be placed in the Text submenu, either right above or right below Text>Text_and_Font. So it would be Text>Text_tool. I haven't looked at the source code in 7 years, but I think this would be as simple as adding menu item Text>Text tool and having it call win.tool-switch('Text') on left click. Icons and hotkeys are wonderful time savers, but in my opinion they don't relieve the need of a functionality being reachable from the menu, so the functionality is reachable without dangerous trial and error. Also, for some unknown reason, Shift-t didn't invoke the text tool, although F8 did. I tried looking for the key bindings, but all I found was in an extension called "Jesseink", and those weren't what was needed. So what do you think? Substituting colors in Inkscape

Hi all, I have a sketch .jpg whose lines are green. I want to convert the green lines to #FF86F8. Is there a way to do this in Inkscape? I know this is really a job for a pixel editor, but now that Gimp requires a PhD to operate, and all the rest of the Linux pixel editors are junk, I'm hoping to get Inkscape to do it. OS 22.04 LTS - Inkscape 1.1.2 (0a00cf5339, 2022-02-04) - Python 3.10.12 Recently, I went looking for an SVG to POV converter and found the Inkscape Extensions Gallery had an Inkscape to POVray extension -- with a link to a newer, improved version on an external site. Also, while browsing the gallery I thought I might someday use the Render Barcode extension. However, they both want to use simplepath, simpletransform, cubicsuperpath, and cspsubdiv, which I find in /usr/share/inkscape/extensions/inkex/deprecated-simple/, but which the extensions themselves do not find. Discoverable way to do the same thing as the Text Tool

Hi all, I use the Text Tool, the little icon containing an A and a cursor, quite a bit and am now writing documentation on how to do things. To a newbie all those icons get confusing, so I'm looking for way to use the text tool from the menu system, and couldn't find it. Right tool for the job?

I'm hoping some experienced Inkscape users can confirm what I'm trying to do is a good fit for Inkscape - or not. I want to create control panels for electronic equipment which will be printed or laser-engraved. Mostly text, but some simple graphics, and svg output is needed, so my first thought was Inkscape was the right tool for the job. The problem I've been trying to overcome is in positioning text and graphics precisely where it needs to be. What I'd like is the to position text and graphic objects by center point and position them at specific X-Y locations on the drawing. For example, say I want to position a 1/4" diameter circle precisely over a hole that is located 2" in the X dimension and 1" in the Y dimension (i.e. XY coordinates 2", 1") from the lower left corner of the panel (which is 0",0"). While I've been able to manually subtract the radius or 1/8" and position my circle at 1.875", .875" - that method is more prone to error, especially when it has to be done dozens or hundreds of times. I've tried grids and guides and snapping but haven't found the combination that puts things exactly where I need them. So my question is, can Inkscape be configured to do what I want to do, and if so, how? I've read the manual and watched tutorials and while but haven't found what I need on my own and thought it would save a lot of time if I'd just explain what I would like in enough detail that more experienced users could offer an opinion. I know that Inkscape is very powerful and does many things well, but if this isn't one of them I'd rather find a tool that does than continue to be frustrated. Thanks in advance, Bob

New user input on tutorials

Hi Inkscape team,I am a new user to Inkscape and I have started working through the tutorials, and I have found that they are a little bit out of date, and give instruction that I think are no longer accurate. Since I have the unique perspective of a first time user, I am willing to propose edits to these tutorials if there was someone I could work with to oversee them so I don't make things worse. I am a recently retired engineer (Electronics/mechanical/manufacturing) so I am familiar with product development cycles and testing. I have also done a fair amount of technical writing. If I could get the tutorial in an editable form, like MS Word, I could do markups and forward to an editor for review and possible updates. ThanksDavid

Hi Folks! How to maintain the external size of an object by changing its border thickness? Every time I change the border thickness, the object size automatically changes as well. This is really annoying, because I have to resize again...but in that case the border thickness changes too. So I'm going to repeat this boring procedure until I get it. Nathan, I will try these alternatives suggested by both you and Robert. Honestly, I expected simpler solutions, for a problem that "doesn't seem to be complicated". I imagine a configuration like this: a checkbox with an option "keep the external size of the object, regardless of the thickness of the border". I don't have much knowledge in inkscape, I never took a course, but I think this editor is amazing. Thank you very much. Alexandre - There are instructions for a couple of ways of doing what you want at https://superuser.com/questions/128814/how-to-create-an-inner-border-stroke…. The easiest way may be to use the trick near the bottom of the page, of unsetting the option (an icon on the toolbar at the top) that says 'When scaling objects, scale the stroke width by the same proportion'. (I sent this message yesterday but it was blocked because the 2 images made it too big. The way I handle this is to make the shape, copy it and then use the copy to clip the shape. thus giving it half the line weight. These should be grouped together. when you scale this group, the line will scale but you can then set the weight to whatever you want by setting the line weight to 2 times what you want, as you now only see half. I am running opensuse tumbleweed using proot-distro. My de is xfce. When i click maximize button on inkscape it does not change window size. inkscape selector tool not work porperly

Hi， everyone, It's just begin from today. that my inkscape 1.2.2 and inkscape 1.3 beta0 not worked porperly. When I using "selector tool" drag a selecting box, some item out the box will be selected, only if it's tectangle border partly cover by my selection box. I mean if I draw a selecting box as blue rectangle showing , because of the line's border is partly covered by the box ,the line will eventually be selected. I don't find any setting related to that. So anybody know how to solve the problem or this is a new bug? by the way, the problem was happened after I tried to using inkscape 1.3 beta0 as a windows 64bit compress zip pack. and after that I found Even if I back to use 1.2.2 the stable version I already used, the problem just still exist. yours BrightHuang

Unset Stroke Color Only?

Hello! I would like to request a new feature that sets stroke color to “unset”, while leaving stroke style as is, so that I can control the stroke color of it via CSS. I noticed that I can unset the stroke paint in the Fill and Stroke dialog, but doing so also unsets stroke style, making it inconvenient for me, as I have to remove the “stroke” attribute in the final svg file in the end. I’m aware that it’s better to file requests to bug tracker systems, but as the Report Bugs suggests I decided to send the request here for discussion before doing so. Thanks!

Hello all, I am new to Inkscape and wonder if what follows is a known bug, or an error of mine. I'm running Inkscape 0.92.4 on Linux Debian 4, so it may well have long been fixed. When I export it to PNG, the first line appears with the red 123 on top of the blue 321, as if the tspan's had been processed in reverse order. (The second line, without tspan's, remains correct.) Is anyone else having problems with moving figures to top, up in a layer, down in a layer, or to bottom. Let's say we create two circles, with different interior colors (red and yellow) that overlap like a Venn diagram. The circle on top determines the color of the common area. Try to move the circle on top to the bottom, or the circle on the bottom to the top, changing the color of the common area. It doesn't seem to work?

Actual object contents are somehow not within parent selection boxes, how to fix?

I've attached a svg logo I originally got from some web site. I've attached it. Unfortunately it seems pretty broken in that the actual contents of a lot of the contained objects don't seem to be within the bounding boxes of their containing objects. I've found that if I more the right sub-objects around I can get them back withing the bounds of their parents (e.g. by putting g42->svg40->g38->g36 I can get it into the bounding box of g42. But of course fixing the entire thing this way would be really painful and might still not really be correct. Is this thing really valid to begin with? Is there any good systematic way to fix it? make original selection dialog show up again

I rebuilt inkscape and the first couple times what looked like some sort of original setup dialog showed up. I wanted to look at it and consider the options it offers but now it doesn't show up again. How can I make it reappear? Thanks, Britton
