Dear Users and Developers, I've put together an integrated tutorial for the irc chat on inkscape.org and I'd like a few users and support contributors to give it a review: https://inkscape.org/en/*users/chat/ You should see a few things are different now: * You must be logged in to use the chat, previously you could be anonymous. You even must have an email configured, so facebook and twitter logins must update their user profile before chatting. * There is the above guide which add the can_irc permission to a user's account. Confirming they've seen every page (I shorted it to 4 pages). * There's a new IRC bot that offers these new commands: - webbot: whois [username] ; will tell you who a user is and a link to their website profile, in case someone joins the chat asks a question and then leaves without waiting. - webbot: tell [username] [msg] ; will send an alert to the user with a possible response. The default for website message alerts is to email them too. So you can respond to someone who just left. - Get Latest Art ; a bit of fun to return the latest item in the Artwork category on the live site. Returns the link. - If you want further integrations between irc and the website, this is now possible. (maybe good for meetings in the future) I'm hoping these tools will allow users to feel comfortable chatting with us and also provision support contributors with what they need when in chat. Difference difference

Hi Friends, It seems like I should know the answer to this. But I don't recall hearing about it. Starting with these 2 rings, which have fill and no stroke: http://inkscapecommunity.com/jd/ss/diff1.png I duplicate both, and then Difference. At 100% zoom they look ok. But zoom in (in this case, all the way, for best view) and you can see that the Difference wasn't correct. http://inkscapecommunity.com/jd/ss/diff2.png It's not a huge amount, but I would expect there shouldn't be any difference at all. This on Windows 7, 64-bit, sp1, Inkscape 0.91, 32-bit, exe installer. Is that a bug? Or is there some reason it's expected not to be precise? Thanks for your help :-) brynn

A old post.. sorry for the late. Not sure if reply at time. Is dificult add mass to pencil tool. In eraser tool is only activate a widget but pen tool work totaly diferent. Cheers, Jabier. Inkscape crashes when importing an image

I am using inkscape on my debian system. On one machine, it crashes when I try to import an image or drag and drop it from a file manager. I am attaching the log captured in a terminal. This happens with all images---type, size, color. Drawing display

Hello, I’m running inkscape 0.91 with XQuartz 2.7.9 on mac OS X 10.11.4 I’m having a problem. When I create a new document, I select a shape like ellipse, I draw but nothing appears on the screen, the shape won’t draw. The outline is by default, black on white. custom grids ("outside the box")

Hi Friends, I have a couple of questions about custom grids. I'm more or less familiar with the various extensions, and the 2 regular grids (rectangular and axonomic/isometric). But I was thinking about a couple of....well, probably silly things....but very unusual grids. One thing I want is the axomonic grid, but rotated around....I think would be 30 degrees, so that if you use it to draw a hexagon, the 2 vertical sides are horizontal. And the tiny triangles point up and down instead of side to side. Or a rectangular grid rotated 45 degrees. So instead of tiny squares, it's tiny diamonds. And the other thing I was wondering. Would it be possible, somehow using Guides, to make a grid like that, or even with a star shape? For example, see http://inkscapecommunity.com/jd/ss/sg.png. There I made 3 stars, centered on the same spot, each 50 px larger (or smaller). Then I used Object to Guides. But this would be a tedious process, to say the least, to make a page-size grid. Plus, for the star shape, it makes 2 guides for each of the 5 sides. I understand why, it's just that makes it even more work, to deal with the extra ones....if you were actually considering doing it with guides. Questions: 1 - Would making, let's say an a4 page-size grid, using guides, start to create performance issues, like it would if you used paths? 2 - Otherwise, would making this kind of grid require an extension, or other coding? 3 - Or is there any other way to get an unusual grid like these examples? I mean, a grid that can be snapped to. I realize I could get a photo or other image of a grid and import it. But it wouldn't be snappable. Thank you very much :-) brynn

ImageMagick vulnerability

Hi Friends, I know Inkscape does not use or depend on ImageMagick. But a lot of graphics or graphics-related apps do use it. So just in case anyone hasn't heard about this, I wanted to share. http://arstechnica.com/security/2016/05/easily-exploited-bug-exposes-huge-n… I don't think the Inkscape website gallery uses IM, does it? combine paths within a group

Hi Friends, I needed to add some new paths to existing paths which were in a group. And I hate nested groups. So rather than group the new path with the original group, I decided to combine the new paths with one of the paths inside the group. And I found that combining the new paths to the paths inside the group, removed the new compound path from the group. Should that happen? Steps: 1 -- create 3 paths (or create 1 and duplicate twice) 2 -- place the 3 paths side by side (with or without space between) 3 -- group those 3 paths 4 -- draw a new path 5 -- drag it over beside the left path 6 -- with the Node tool, select the left path and the new path 7 -- Path menu > Combine 8 -- deselect all 9 -- switch to Selection tool and select the group Notice that the original Group of 3 is now a Group of 2. The newly created compound path has been ejected from the Group. The same thing happens if you enter the group before combining. Should that happen? I don't know why Inkscape should assume that I don't want this new path in the group anymore. I can't say for a fact that this is different behavior than in the past. But it seems like it is. If this is expected, why? If not, this is on Windows 7, 64-bit, sp1, with Inkscape 0.91, 32-bit (exe installer) and 64-bit (7z version). Should be reported? Thank you very much :-) brynn

I have a logo that I created in 2010 when I was confortable using inkscape. I have not used it for a while but would like to delete the date on it and keep the rest. A lovely user of this forum did it for me once but do you think I can find the file ? of course not, lol. Is there any way I can just use a shape, circle perhaps, in white and lay it over the date so it will not show ? I could then save it as a jpg rather than a png and use it. thanks for any advice,Joanne

Website access in China - Fix applied

Dear Inkscape Users and Developers, After a lot of backwards and forwards between osuosl and fastly.net we have put in place a solution for our website's access in China. The problem was that our chinese visitors would be able to get the website, but not any of the media (or downloads) because of their great firewall. The solution was a CNAME from media.inkscape.org to fastly and some special dns configuration which I barely understand to solve the issue with access to fastly caches. (I copied and pasted what people said in two tickets and acted as a manual ticket express for the professionals) This solution is now live and I invite people in China to test the website and please report back if they can see any issues. Hi All, Since I am running Scientific Linux 7.2 (RHEL clone), I am probably not running the latest Inkscape: $ rpm -qa inkscape inkscape-0.48.4-15.el7.x86_64 I tried Inkcape out to create a graphics for a tech manual. I managed to find everything I need in DuckDuckGo (Google without the spying). I was impressed. One thing I never figured out (and had to use GIMP) was how to erase a section. All the stuff I found on the web made no sense to me and I couldn't find things. Exactly how to I erase something? (I don't mind over writing with a while brush, as I did in GIMP.) Hi Friends, I was just looking at a message that looks like it was sent to 3 Inkscape mailing lists. But it looks quite spammish. I'm just curious how spam in the list is handled. It *could* be spam only for me, that was made to look like it's from the Inkscape lists, to fool me. I don't know much about mail headers and such, but it does look like it was sent to the lists, to me. I won't say exactly which message, in case it's not spam. PAP distortion

Hi Friends, I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this. But I'm hoping someone might know some trick that I haven't heard (or maybe heard but forgot). Using Pattern Along Path LPE, where there's a sharp corner or tight curve, the pattern becomes distorted. Please see screenshot http://inkscapecommunity.com/jd/ss/PAPdistort.png. I've corrected some of it by adding nodes near the sharp points. See http://inkscapecommunity.com/jd/ss/PAPdistort1.png. Is the only solution to convert the PAP to path, and manually delete the misshaped circles, then replace with individual circles, at or around the points? Thanks for your help :-) brynn

New extension: isometric projection converter

Hello, I have created an extension for Inkscape that transforms a flat two-dimensional object to one of the three visible sides of an isometric projection: https://github.com/jdhoek/inkscape-isometric-projection I was drawing some woodworking plans using an isometric grid, and wanted a way to transform an object drawn in 2D to the top, left-hand side, or right-hand side of an isometric projection. Learned a bit about affine transformations along the way too. The utility methods in simpletransform.py where really useful! Thanks for providing these. support for gcode extensions

Hi Friends, I provide support for Inkscape daily, in bb style forums or occassionally in LP Answers. A couple of things are missing across the community. 1 - tutorials for using gcode tools, and 2 - support for questions and problems with those extensions. I know that the extensions all reference a single, 30-page topic in a Russian forum, as a place to get support. But we still are getting questions posted in other forums, that we just can't answer. Questions about "Draw From Triangle..." Extension

As the subject says, my questions are about the utility accessed from the menus: Extension > Render > Draw From Triangle... and specifically about whether one of the several 'circle' options is what I want, which is what I am thinking of, which is the following: Nodes in a path are ordered, right? So an SVG renderer knows how to connect them up. Therefore, the individual lines or Bézier curves (not B-*splines*, as a spline is multiple curves connected together at their ends, and having the same slopes [for Spiro, which is just a subset of B-splines, curvature also] at the points of those connections as their neighbors; polylines are not splines since they are meant not to have the same slope as their neighbors [or else two such connected lines could be replaced with a single line]) can also be ordered: the curve between nodes 1 and 2 is curve 1, n2 & n3 = c2, and so on. If the path is closed, node *last*'s connection to node 1 is the last curve. So far so good (if all I have said above is technically correct). I have happily drawn circumcircles and incircles around triangles before in Inkscape. Geometrically speaking, they do not have to be triangles in the literal sense, since: - they can be closed or open - a quick test just now shows that using nonlinear sides for a three-sided, three-node closed shape produces a circumcircle (for instance, selected just for the test), although it neither encompasses the path nor contains the points where the nodes are at. I tried, but three lone nodes (or any number of nodes not connected to any other) cannot be created in Inkscape, not sure about SVG itself. Anyway, now I realised I wanted something else. Given three points, in either a closed or open triangle, I want a circle for which the two sides connected to the 'middle' node (they are ordered, remember) are both tangent to said circle: tangent at the first and last nodes, to be specific. There are infinitely many circles tangent to two true (that is, infinite) lines, see something like http://i.stack.imgur.com/2NFBD.png <http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/146942/inscribing-multiple-incircles…> but without the intervening lines if you want proof :P but as far as I can tell, only one of those infinitely many circles fits the description I just typed, because either one of the sides connected to the middle node establishes a *distance* from said node, which selects a unique circle. Is there a mathematical name for this circle in relation to the triangle that generates it that I simply have not learned yet? If so, is it already in 'Draw From Triangle'? If not, could it be? Another feature request in respect to that module could be informative error messages. Often it just fails silently, either producing no objects or something different from the description, especially when multiple desired shapes are requested. In any case, if that ramble if readable, I would love some thoughts. -Arlo James Barnes

Object outline

Hi Todor. The work on mass tool in eraser is previously done, because the eraser tool get code from caligraphic tool, so I only show mass widget. Anybody is thinking in another widget to show to eraser tool from caligraphic tool? About your concrete question: Is not as easy implement it, maybe the best option to it is add a option to caligraphic tool to only do one direction line instead the current shape, for example with width = 0. Font bug?

I have had a problem when working with a text box. I select some text in it in order to change the font. On clicking on the font selector, an alert box appears with the title "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library". The notice is "Assertion failed". "program C:\Program Files\Inkscape\inkscape.exe file cairo-font-face.c Line 144 Expression: CAIRO_REFERENCE_COUNT_HAS_REFERENCE (&font_face->ref_count)" The program then shuts down. I am using Inkscape 0.91 r13725 - the binary installation on Windows 7. Regards John Sampson

Hello - I am new to Inkscape. I am trying to enter a Unicode character into text. While text is selected I press ctrl-U but this terminates the text rather than going into Unicode mode. Has the function of ctrl-U been changed in current versions of Inkscape?

0.91: Export to png not working

Hi there, in Inkscape 0.91 in Xubuntu 14.04, directly exporting to png (Shift+Ctl+E) doesn't give any reaction. Exporting via "Save as" does work though. Can someone confirm that? Cheerz, Lars

Windows 10: Menu commands of Inkscape do not appear

Hello. I installed the latest version of Inkscape on Windows 10. Three effects I recognize: 1 Inkscape needs extremly long to start (about 15 seconds), much longer than every other application (about 1-2 seconds) on my PC with an SSD. 2 When I click any entry in the menu toolbar, an empty rectangle appears. Not any command is visible. 3 When I hover over any symbol in the vertical toolbar as well an empty rectangle appears. How can I solve the problem please? Thanks. Create a SVG chart from Excel/Libreoffice Calc data sheet?

Hello. I work for a free and non commercial bicycle magazin and we often publish scientific articles. They contain data sheets and charts. Until know we publish the charts as a PNG. The quality is low and as every bitmap graphic it doesn't scale well. Is there a tool which allows to create a chart from an Excel (or Libreoffice Calc) data sheet as an SVG? Of course the code of the SVG should be of high quality. Text should be text. Basic shapes (circles, rectangles, etc.) shouldn't be realised as a path etc. Thanks. Andreas

Yesterday Mc- brought up a design for the inkscape website which got a few approval nods from various attending people: https://yadi.sk/i/CfqypzmvpPbay I contacted the designer at the time and just heard back. So what we have here is a psd of a single page that flows downwards. I expect it to assume a standard set of css frameworks such as bootstrap or similar. I also know that Hinerangi has some designs waiting in the wings for the website and that we've stalled on moving more improvements in. I'm interested in hearing wider feedback from the community since I've been under the impression that the website's design has been fairly serviceable. A replacement would be a fair amount of work and at the moment I'm only committed to making sure the technical integration of any proposed design goes ahead without any barriers. Hi Hinerangi, Thanks so much for posting a screenshot of your design, I like it very much. What I like about your design is: * The colour theme, I've grown to like the white an black clean lines * The non-scrolling, single page, makes it easier to do information pages using the same * The news and other information is closer to the top. What I like about eshill's design is: * The four horizontal images for each of the sections * The cleaner download button, separate and large for the first page. * The icons for the information sections (news, users etc) But getting a responsive design would be really nice IMO. One of the best advances for the site.
