Extensions slow / crashing Inkscape

I have produced the O-scape extensions to enable the creation of Orienteering maps using Inkscape. I am producing a map of an urban area, which is larger than A3 paper size at 1:4,000. The SVG file is currently 2,126KB with over 3,200 objects (and counting) and has three linked (not embedded) image files; two maps and aerial imagery from Google Maps. Most of the map has been produced using standard Inkscape functionality for lines and shapes. Now, though, when I want to convert a line to a special line type (such as a tagged line representing a fence), the extension runs very slowly and sometimes crashes Inkscape. Sometimes Inkscape 'loses' the aerial imagery, instead displaying a low res image saying 'Linked image not found' at which point I can save and exit normally. Other times, Inkscape crashes with the following message - 'GLib-Error **:gmem.c:175: Failed to allocate 134217728 bytes aborting...'. I've tried running other extensions, not just my O-scape ones, with the same results. I'm running Inkscape in Windows Vista Home Premium on an Intel Core2 6600 @ 2.40GHz computer and have recently increased the available RAM from 2GB to 4GB. Am I reaching the limit of Inkscape? Is there some way that I can alter my set-up to a) make extensions fun faster, and b) stop the extensions losing the linked files or crashing Inkscape? Jon

This is a development snapshot of version 2 of JessyInk. The main purpose of this release is to give the community an opportunity to provide feedback on the new design of JessyInk. This version is a re-implementation of the code in a highly modular way. The user interface is now based on graphical objects that can be copied and grouped for installation of the scripts and assignment of effects and views. So far only very basic functionality is provided. However, further features will be added in future versions leading up to version 2.0.0. Getting Inkscape to work as a template editor

I have a design that is created in Inkscape, its a poster that has visual, and informational elements to it. The information bits are subject to change. Is there a way that I can get Inkscape to pull the data from a datasource [i.e. XML]? Is a tr [preprocessing] the only way to go with this? The task I am attempting to accomplish is to create a shell script that'll accept a specific dataset to pass onto the template, use inkscape to transform the inkscape resulting file into a PDF. etc -Steven

Crash when moving nodes

Greetings, All! [*cheery wave*] I hope this is the proper place to ask. If not, please direct me to the correct list. I've been using Inkscape on Kubuntu for several years. Most of my previous applications have been minor things such as business cards, posters and photo collections. Recently, I've started working on some cardstock scale modeling projects. These involve lots of pattern files from photographs. Just the last few days, I've had to restart Inkscape dozens of times. It crashes when I have an irregular shape with a pattern fill and try to move nodes. The second or third node I move causes the program to report an error and then crash. I've found a few work arounds so I can complete my project, but it has been a pain. Here's my current setup. - AMD processor, Asus MB, 4Gb RAM, 1.5Tb HD, NVIDIA (onboard MB), 24" LCD monitor. - Kubuntu 10.04 with all current patches. - Inkscape vs 0.47 Thanks in advance for any assistance. *Happy Holidays!* -- E.C. hello all! just wanted to update you all on the website we're making some good progress and things are starting to come together for the website, We're currently in the process of having the pages mocked up and then translating those to html/css and django. we do however need a couple things.. 1. We need someone to develop a good quality video for our about page it'll be a brief overview of inkscape and will hopefully be less than 2-3 minutes. - It would be great to include a couple brief interviews of prominent companies that us inkscape for their everyday work. If you're able to submit interviews in video format to add to the video it would be great too! Creating a mask

Hi, I have created a stylized Christmas tree from a series or arcs, and tree straight lines forming the stem. With Paths -> combine I've combined these paths to a single path. All this forms a layer, and on a layer underneath is a picture. What I want is to create a mask from the Christmas tree, so that only that part from the picture that is within the Christmas tree is visible. From Tamjongs course I learned that it is clipping that I need, but I cannot find that in my Dutch translated Inkscape (.47 and .48), and also masking (that should do the inverse if I'm correct, that is, only that nót within the Christmas tree becomes visible) doesn't seem to do anything. Website redesign discussion (purely the aesthetic talk)

Hey All, I had seen a well done comparison of the Blender website with the alternative commercial tools websites by Andrew Price. I was putting together a similar comparison for vector apps but the websites vary a bit more and reading what he had done is sufficient enough for people to get the point. I think that his analysis is just as valid for Inkscape's website too. Visit http://www.blenderguru.com/the-big-issues/ and do a quick search for "marketing" and scroll down just a little to see what his observations were. At this point I have to say that we should really follow a similar approach for our redesign too. Following are the links to a few commercial alternatives in the vector editor category, to compare their sites to ours. http://www.adobe.com/products/illustrator/ http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Product/1281109933608 http://www.xara.com/us/products/designer/ http://www.microsoft.com/expression/products/design_overview.aspx My main observation? 3D software is marketed much more nicely and I actually think we should approach the redesign in a similar way. Realistically I think we can be a bit more playful with the design, but we should have something that communicates what inkscape is and what it's capable of in a better way for non-existing users. Fill areas with color

I have a drawing like the attached compass.svg. I want to color it so that it looks like the attached compass.png. How do I do that in Inkscape? Using the Paint Bucket Tool doesn't work well since it doesn't handle the sharp corners correctly, I get something like the attached SharpCorner.png (after removing the stroke of the created paths), when zooming in as much as possible. I think that the problem is that the Paint Bucket Tool is bitmap based. I would rather need a vector based fill tool. Is there any such possibility in Inkscape?

Keeping a target color after adjusting opacity or alpha

Color newbie: How do I keep a perceived color from changing when I add opacity? Is there a formula to use in RGBA space, or do one of the other color coordinate systems have this as one of their dimensions? I have a specific logo color #00538FFF that I'm using in other graphics. For these other graphics, I have a front layer with a rectangle fill of this color, opacity set the 80%. The desired effect is that photos in lower layers become visible but clearly tinted in the main color. The 80% opacity is clearly not a color match for the original RGBA #00538FFF, nor did I expect it would be. My question is: how do I calculate the matching color at a certain opacity? Drawing blury with the Calligraphic Pen Tool

The Book Of Inkscape talks about drawing blury strokes with the Caligraphic Pen Tool. But how do you do that in a convenient way? I can't get it to remember the blur when drawing several strokes, so I end up having to set each stroke's blur manually. Is there a better way?

Inkscape needs your help!

hello, It's been a good long while since I've emailed the mailing list I am a part of the server management involving inkscape and have been for approximately 4+ years. I am writing you today for 2 reasons. 1. Our current site is terrible, I'm sorry but there is no chance of just brushing over it. I know there have been a fair number of people in the past 2 years who have submitted website mockup ideas and we've had contests but no one has ever followed through. Which I'll take partial blame for it. Things are just scattered every which way 2. I wanted to update you on the status of the Test suite, Osuosl is currently in the process of setting up the ability to run test suites so that we can test the SVG building more efficiently. So stay tuned for more info on this in the near future. Anyway back to problem 1. Here's how I think we can best solve this problem. We're going to break the website into different categories and duties. 1. UI (mockups) (*ARTIST*/PROGRAMMERS*) - Ability to make mockups of how you think the website should look. - After we pick yours we will request to see the top couple in HTML/CSS 2. Artwork for the website (*ARTIST*) - Ability to develop / sharpen logos as well as various buttons etc as needed 3. Drupal Modules (*PROGRAMMERS*) - Skills required - Knowledge of Mysql/PHP/JS and HTML - Knowledge or ability to learn how drupal works 4. Documentation (*WRITERS*) - Skills - Moderate knowledge and ability to update and port existing content over to the new site. 5. Translation - We need people who specialize in various languages to port content once completed into the various languages. So what's wrong with the current design? a lot, it's way too cluttered and disorganized not to mention you click wiki you go to a whole different navigation and sub site. That is just a pain to deal with as a user. xml - path attribute (d)

Hello everyone, I'm trying to use Inkscape to digitalize a diagram of experimental data. This is how I went about it: 1) Get the page in the .pdf document that holds the diagram. 2) Print out this page to another .pdf document. 3) Import the .pdf of the diagram page into Inkscape (with the "fine" import precision). 4) Ungroup everything. 5) Cleanup the text so that it doesn't bother the page size - coordinatization. 6) Resize the page size to the diagram axis span. 7) Set the document units to 'mm'. 8) Draw a path along the line in the diagram. 9) Export the path node coordinates into a .txt, xml, or whatever file. Coordinate system is defined by the document metrics and the page (lower left corner is 0, as the border rules state). This is the .svg document in question: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RZPI1084 Currently, I am stuck on the step 9 of the process. I have found the xml editor within Inkscape, but I haven't been able to find the option to export path data. The "d" attribute now holds values that are far to great to be in milimeters, although the document units are set in milimeters. There are letters like "M" (I believe it stands for "MOVE", I've played around with it) within the "d" attribute of the path. Is there a way to export just the paths I have drawn (I can give them sepparate id-s and names to distinguish them later on)? What is the best place to look for the description of the "d" attribute of a path? How do I sync the document units to the values of the d attribute? I have seen that there is a "transform" option in the xml property window of my path... what is that? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Tomislav

PDF export error

Hello, Not sure how to describe this PDF export error, so I thought I'd check the list first. When I make a simple four node path in the attached SVG, the PDF export closes the path (test.pdf). Not sure if I'm doing something wrong here, so any input would be helpful. I get identical output whether I manually "Save As" PDF or convert it from the command line. Thanks in advance. I'm using a freshly installed copy of Ubuntu 10.10, with Inkscape 0.48.0 r9654. I can file a bug report if it's warranted. Thanks, Matthew

EPS Error

Hi, I got an error when I try to open a eps file that I create using Inkscape, I'm on windows XP. Actually I know the file is OK, because I converted to PDF and it looks nice. Export to PDF with filter effects, rasterizing

I am trying to export (save copy as) to PDF, and the filter effects on a particular piece of SVG from openclipart render poorly. http://www.openclipart.org/detail/35389 The rings circling the globe and the four flare-effect points with circular gradients are greatly enlarged on PDF export, washing out most of the globe effect behind a white gradient. Is this an inherent limitation of the current state of PDF export? The graphic is proportionally scaled larger than its original size, e.g. 3" diameter on printed output. It looks exactly right as SVG, but are the gradients getting scaled incorrectly on PDF output? I did try the option to rasterize filter effects, but that did not change the rendered output much. It may well have rasterized, but the gradients were still the same over-size. I am using Inkscape bzr trunk on Gentoo Linux ~amd64. Thanks.

Heavy operations with Inkscape

Hi list, I'm part of the team that's building up Libre Graphics Magazine (http://libregraphicsmag.com). We're using Inkscape to create the cover, as well as some illustrations inside. There's an issue that has been bothering me for a while. For some purposes, we need to operate on a huge number of paths -- e.g., combining >2000 paths or applying path operations (union, intersect, etc) to a very large number of paths. Inkscape, of course, takes quite some time to execute these, and there's no way that I've found to see the progress of the operation. Now, I can understand that it would be a big feature request to have progress feedback on heavy operations like these. However, something that I would *love* to have is some kind of feedback when the operation is completed, so that i can work on other programs while Inkscape does its thing. Right now, I'm keeping a terminal window with 'top' running, so I can keep tabs on Inkscape's CPU usage -- when it drops, the operation's probably done. However, I can imagine there would be an easier and more straightforward way to know when Inkscape's done with crunching paths. Do any of you fellow Inkscape users have any tips or hacks that can help with this issue? Also, should i pester inkscape-devel or file a feature request to have notifications (bell sound or notify popup) when a long operation is finished? Cheers!

Hi all, I'm using Inkscape 0.48.0 under Windows XP. I'm trying to convert some images and I used this command inkscape -f "%CD%\image.bpm" -E "%CD%\image.eps" The problem is that now every time it prompts for an option: embed or link. My question is: Is there any way to pass this option in the command line? Or set a default state instead of clicking for the option I want. Thanks, adin

Inkscape is great! I have just spent two weeks as a newbie user of Inkscape finishing a design project. I could not be happier with the program: everything I tried to do worked great. Thanks to all the developers and to everyone who has written manuals and tutorials. I want to export files at the best possible resolution for sharing or viewing, -- what save-as format should I select? -- what options should I select or designate in the second stage dialog window? Here is what I've tried so far. For quick views and email, I export a png file (small and adequate). For high resolution views, I've tried pdf, ps, and eps. In particular I don't know what setting to specify for "Resolution for rasterization (dpi)." Do I want Postscript level 2 or level 3? I have the same question regarding high resolution printing. In the print dialogue window, I have the option of selection print resolution. Does this vary with the attached printer? I am offered the option of 120 x120, 360 x 360, or 720 x 720 dpi. Here are my intended purposes: I print images at home on an inkjet printer (available resolution 600 x 600). I print on a laser printer (available resolutions 1200 x 1200). I send print jobs to a printer for posters (unknown resolution but big final output). I share proofs of my work via pdf. I incorporate images into LaTeX documents. I am making an animated film digitally in Inkscape. I save each frame as a pdf, open in Apple Preview, save as a jpg, and then open in movie editing software and edit frame by frame. I have spent a lot of time looking through the manuals, tutorials, and archives. I have not found the discussion I am looking for in regard to print and output quality and resolution. I assume that I should set my image dimensions to desired final dimensions. But how do screen pixels ppi relate to print resolution dpi? My monitor (iMac 27 inch display) is approximately 109 ppi. I'd love to hear the theory behind all these decisions, but if an Inkscape expert just wants to tell me what to do, that'd be great. TIA, Jeremiah

John: Probably Inkscapeforum.com is a good place to start. Anyway, I'd suggest you to think twice before proposing such contest. You're offering a very small amount of money as a price (far below the street price of a logo, even for my country where our currency is 1/4 of a dollar) and these kind of contests are perceived generally as a cheap strategy to get several logos offering almost nothing. It may damage your reputation among the designers and you'll only get design proposals from hobbists with a poor or non-existing knowledge about design. Contests are generally considered as spec-work, and serious designers really hate that. If you don't have money, maybe the best thing is to announce that you need a logo, that you have that money and no more and let the people interested decide if they want to design something for that amount. You could ask for a portfolio of the interested people and choose one, and from that point continue working as a regular contract work.

Is there a standard or available Inkscape color palette limited to colors that can be expressed in CMYK? CMYK and Inkscape output.

There is an output option for Inkscape 48 called PDF em CMYK. It is not covered in any of the books. When I select it I get a popup window written in Portugese. If I save it anyhow I get warning messages. Is there an English language explanation of this feature? Do I need to load additional software? -- John Culleton, Wexford Press

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX apologies for Xposting XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX hello all, i am working on a performative installation in which inkscape is used. the idea is that people can draw on the screen (in inkscape) and a constantly refreshing screengrab is streamed to a server (in pure data) which displays it on a webpage. this page also displays a performer in australia. both 'screens' (australia + touchscreen in amsterdam) are communicating together through drawing/touch. what i am missing in inkscape for all this to run smoothly is: 1) full screen option (not even showing the menu bar 'File', 'Edit', etc., *only* the canvas). 2) a graphical button (i.e. filled green circle) which, when 'pressed', will 'save as' (to record the current vector drawing to a folder with a numerically incrementing filename), 'select all', 'erase', 'return pointer to paintbrush tool option'. the situation is that i have very little time to figure this out and i can imagine that for some people on this list this is rather easy to implement. therefore i hope that someone out there has a bit of time and perhaps an inclination to work on this. there is of course budget for this and proper credits to the programmer/developper and promotion of inkscape project will be included in the project documentation. the project runs on nov. 6th. Hello again, I noticed a strange bug that happens on newer inkscape version. In the attached archive you can see the svg file i'm trying to convert into PDF. The file b.pdf was created with Inkscape 0.46 (Apr 5 2008), and it looks fine. File a.pdf was created with Inkscape 0.47 r22583 (Jan 20 2010), and does not preserve the fill transparency of the simple shape. Both files were created via commandline on linux servers, with the sintax: inkscape -z clip.svg --export-pdf=a.pdf --export-text-to-path To check, i've also tried the very last version, 0.48, installed in windows. I've opened the svg file, then i simply saved it as PDF: result is identical to the wrong file a.pdf Any idea? Thanks in advance, Alex

I've had the same problem with Inkscape in windows. Some truetype fonts aren't detected. The explanation I was given at the time was that Inkscape is very picky about fonts and low quality fonts that don't completely conform to the font specification get ignored. font problem - SVG to EPS or PDF working only as root user

Hello Inkscape users, I'm having a strange issue i help you'll be able to help me fix. I'm currently using both inkscape 0.46 and 0.47 r22583, on two distinct linux servers. I'm using it as a commandline tool, to convert vector files for an online application i'm developing. The problem is simple. I have command lines like these: /usr/bin/inkscape -z file.svg --export-eps=file.eps --export-text-to-path /usr/bin/inkscape -z file.svg --export-pdf=file.pdf --export-text-to-path If these commands are executed in shell as root, all is fine. But if executed via PHP "exec()" function, so as user Apache as i need it, the generated EPS or PDF files are created but without the correct font. Please note that i execute in cron every day the command "fc-cache -f /usr/share/fonts/ttf", and /usr/share/fonts/ttf contains all of the fonts i need. It behaves just like the Apache user cannot access the system fonts library... so strange. Moreover, with a previous version of inkscape all was fine. So i'm just afraid there's something i need to set up at system level to grant Apache user access to system fonts by using inkscape. Any idea about what could cause this? import several images

Hello, I don't know the exact name to call it but I need to import a group of images (sometimes more then 100) to make some animation with inkscape. Each image has to be on a différent layer. At the end I export them in .png format to load in cinelerra. I made some rechearh on the net, the only thing i found is http://mutins.net/spip.php?article285 ( in french) But the script wasn't done exactly for what i want to do. I need to copy images to the layers to work on them individually. They all stuck in the same page and loose the link when i copy paste on layers. ( Well that's what for the script is written for !... So normal) Has any one some idea to help me out ? Thanks Haldun.

Missing fonts in Inkscape

Hi all, My problem is that although I have several (10) members of Neo Tech font family, and most of the applications can use them, Inkscape sees only two of them. Actually, these two were modified. Do anyone know about a possible reason? I have Windows XP SP3, I have just installed Inkscape 0.48 (I had 0.44 previously with the same failure). Background: Although Inkscape has been on my computer for years, I didn't use it, because I have Corel too and it seemed more convenient. I work for a producing company (Semilab), and we used to give the labeling of our equipments to screen-printing companies. The designs that are screen-printed are given to these companies in .cdr files. We are thinking about changing from Corel to Inkscape for this purpose, as the number of copies of Corel we have is limited, there are incompatibility problems between versions, and Corel is expensive. But we can do this only if Inkscape is equal to Corel in performance in the limited way we use it. This doesn't seem to me a very strict criterion, as we do very basic things (typing, drawing basic shapes, our logo), but includes using all Neo Tech fonts we have. Thank you Abel

You have to attach a CMYK icc profile first (I'm not sure if it's a requirement, but if I remember correctly you have to save and reload in order to apply it). Then, going to CMS tab in the fill/stroke dialog you can set the CMYK values. The resulting SVG file can be opened (mostly) in Scribus 1.5.0trunk, and the CMYK values will be preserved (you can check in the colors dialog, that the imported colors are in CMYK mode instead of RGB as a regular SVG). Scribus doesn't fully support Inkscape SVGs yet, but as far as I know that's already on the works (you can tell by trying Scribus nightlies, SVG support has been improved a lot).

I know that it is possible to describe spot colors in Inkscape using CMYK notation. But is it possible to produce any form of output file with the colors specified in the file itself using CMYK notation? exporting

Hi All I have done a few Google searches but didn't come up with quite what I want, so I'm hoping there is someone out there that can point me in the right direction. I am making some animations, probably in a long winded way, but for now that is all I know and I have limited time in which to do it. I have drawn every frame on a different layer, with the first layer being the background. Initially I exported to gif by switching on the first (background) layer and the layer of the frame that I want exported and then doing the export. Then I discovered the inkscape command line and with a script I can now export several layers one after another. However, I have not figured out how to export two layers to one gif so I have had to copy the background to each layer. For the export I use the following command line instruction in my script: inkscape --export-png=${1}-${i}.png --export-id=${i} --export-id-only --export-dpi=400 --export-area-page --export-background-opacity=1 ${1}.svg However, this off course will only export the layer with an object id of ${i}. (I number my layers in starting at 001 and incrementing by 1 so that I can loop in a script). Is there a way of more than one layer so that I can export layer 000 (the background) and another layer so that I don't have to copy the background onto each layer. I'm using Ubuntu Lucid, Inkscape 0.47 r22583 (Apr 4 2010) I've got a file in my ~/.inkscape/palettes directory that has in the recent past worked fine in Inkscape as a swatch file. (It's a simple GIMP format file.) However, the file isn't working for me on a new Ubuntu installation, and I can't figure out what it is I need to do to get the program to use the file. There don't seem to be any configuration options or preferences about the swatch file, and from everything I've read it just looks at anything in that "palettes" subdirectory. I've checked permissions and ownership of the directories and the file, and everything looks fine to me (all files owned by me and readable). Is there some trick to getting this working? -- Turtle, turtle, on the ground, Pink and shiny, turn around.
