Hello I am a newbie to Inkscape and scripting in general. I am trying to build an animation extension with Inkscape for doing simple animations as a project in my multimedia course. For that I need to add a timeline in Inkscape and write the timing data for a particular object manipulated by the user into my animation file. Is this possible with Inkscape extensions? Could anyone guide me in finding a resource who could help me with this? Regards Sanat

I have tried a couple of times to learn Python, but I am an old fogy and keep coming up against a wall whenever I try to get my head around the whole object oriented programming thing (yes, I know, Python can do procedural just fine...but it seems like OOP is a sort of central concept to a lot of what python is capable of..) Anybody got any good recommendations for books for learning Python? Especially ones that actually give a clear explanation of the the whole OOP thing in a Python context? I've found stuff that kind of explains things for other languages, but that doesn't help with understanding things from a Python specific point of view. I've gotten a Python for Dummies book...but...it seems I am too dumb even for that. I'd really like to get a handle on this, since Python scripts both Gimp and Blender as well as Inkscape. I've been tinkering with computers for over 20 years, but my programming experience, what there is of it, is pretty much in procedural. Some Pascal (back in the 80's), various flavors of BASIC, mostly on old Atari 8-bit machines, some on Commodor64, Action --think of a cross between C and Pascal, it ran on the Atari--, and lately, Tcl/Tk (Not explicitly OOP, but it is supposedly capable of it), on Win and Linux.

Could anyone > guide me in finding a resource who could help me with this? > > Regards > Sanat If you just want to use Inkscape's great drawing tools in an open source animation pipeline and you don't have to build an extension as some sort of class requirement or other, then the easy route would be to use Pencil to work out your timing, export an image sequence, then use Inkscape to ink and paint. It's how I'm doing most of the scenes for an animated book trailer I'm working on. Status of dbus capability

Howdy, I just built inkscape from bzr and ran import dbus bus = dbus.SessionBus() inkdoc1 = bus.get_object('org.inkscape', '/org/inkscape/desktop_0') doc1 = dbus.Interface(inkdoc1, dbus_interface="org.inkscape.document") im = doc1.image(100 ,100, '/home/ktenney/Firefox_wallpaper.png') Which worked on a dbus branch a while back. Now it starts inkscape, but d - was the dbus code merged? - if so, how do I enable/use it? - if not, where is dbus capable code? Thanks, Kent

graphic tablet problem

I am having problems with my wacom intuos 3 tablet. It works on all the tools and when I go to add it, it appears to be there but I can't change any of the settings. It works in other programs like PSP ok and I have the latest driver installed. I am using inkscape .46 and .47 and can't get it to work in either. But strangely (no idea why I tried this) the erasor seems to work ! No idea why. Can someone help me here please ? cheers, Jo

I fail to understand why are you using inkscape and don't do that directly in GIMP, which is the proper tool for photoretouching. Using vectors for something that should be pixels is too problematic (mostly for printing). According to my experience, I'd reccomend you to only use vectors if you need them, and do all the photo stuff with pixels, at the right resolution. Vector graphics are great for type and things that need to be enlarged, but they can give you some problems when it comes to interaction with bitmap images and printing. I'm not saying you can't use them, but keep that in mind. Mostly if you're using Linux, where you don't have reliable export filters for mixed vectors and bitmaps: PDF export in Inkscape isn't ready for production, SVG import in Scribus has lots of limitations (that you'll find in Adobe products too), PDFs from Scribus aren't interpreted correctly by Adobe software, and (you already found it out) GIMP doesn't have a good vectors support.

Hi, due to my Ubuntu upgrade yesterday, I'm actually not sure if my last post made it to the list, so here it is again. Here's a link to my latest attempt at using Inkscape for photo retouching: http://home.arcor.de/ccyrny/images/bild015_neg.nr.n15a._detail_4x.jpg For me, this is better than mere bitmap editing, due to the necessity to edit larger areas, where the clone brush doesn't work so well. The keys of the technique I used here are a) that the inserted vector shapes are slightly blurred, b) that they are semi-transparent, in order to blend better with the rest of the image. My work flow: a) Importing the photograph into Inkscape (as a PNG or TIFF). b) Drawing the vector shapes.This implies single-color fills as well as linear gradients where necessary.(Shapes where 'Stroke' is disabled are more flexible for retouching.) c) 'Select All'. d) Exporting the final image for fine-tuning into Gimp, CinePaint, Krita, or whatever (I'm working under Ubuntu Linux). e) Fine-tuning, final adjustment of color levels, advanced Unsharp Mask. combining complex paths (Ctrl + K); 0.47 freezes, 0.46 fine

Hello again, I opened a complex dxf-drawing (saved as pdf from SolidWorks). File A) combined 1700 objects with "Ctrl + K": Inkscape 0.46-->1sec; Inkscape 0.47-->80sec File B) combined 3000 objects with "Ctrl + K": Inkscape 0.46-->2sec; Inkscape 0.47-->freezes This really looks like a major bug. I am afraid with these kinds of complex drawings I´ll have to stick to 0.46 until it is fixed. Can anyone confirm this kind of behaviour? 0.47 too slow with complex drawings plus tablet

I have been using inkcape 0.46 professionally for technical illustration for quite a while now. Most of our linedrawings are based on 3D-Cad data. The model is saved from SolidWorks as a as a dxf-drawing (Well I save it as a pdf). Importing these complex models in Inkscape results in up to 50.000 single paths (objects). Working with 0.46 is almost on the limit, but in outline mode it runs ok. So far with 0.46 I did not notice any difference between speed when working with mouse or with a wacom tablet when working with these complex drawings. With 0.47 the behaviour when using a tablet really is worrying: a) Drawing a bezier curve with the pen tool is delayed; the canvas is not responding immediately with pen touch. b) I cannot add nodes with my tablet, by simply touching the path (Strg + Alt + click) c) text tool is not responding propperly Surprisingly with the mouse: a,b,c run smoothly with 0.47. with tablet: with small drawings a,b,c run smoothly with 0.47 (but not with complex drawings) A new user (using a tablet) would certainly be dissapointed about inkscape. Luckily I have started with 0.46 and don´t want to swapp inkcape with any other tool. Can anyone of you confirm this weird tabelt behaviour? If so, shouldn´t I post a bug about this? Screen, icons and themes

Hi, all. I was playing around with 'inkscapec.exe' because now I can see several output message that I had not idea. One of those is the following: (inkscape.exe:3660): Gtk-WARNING **: Could not find the icon 'object-visible'. The 'hicolor' theme was not found either, perhaps you need to install it. You can get a copy from: http://icon-theme.freedesktop.org/releases I know nothing about GTK but, since I am a Windows developer I became curious of how can I change some elements of the Inkscape interface without recompile the software. I did a little search in the Inkscape.org WEB site but I didn't find anything. Someone could point me to a reference place? Thanks a lot, Alessandro Antonello

Problems with SVG

I'm not sure if it's my browsers (I'm certain it is) or the image itself (fairly certain it isn't), but I thought I'd ask for opinions. I made a real basic image[1] (just trying to get used to the controls) and decided to check it out in my favorite browser (and the other two I have installed). I am attempting to compile 0.47 on Slackware 13.0. I run configure then hit a snag: configure: error: libgc (the Boehm Conservative Collector) 6.4+, is needed to compile inkscape -- http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Hans_Boehm/gc I have downloaded the code from the URL mentioned above, it compiles fine. Then I try to compile Inkscape, and it still gives me the above error. I did "make uninstall" on the gc package and downloaded the exact 6.4 package. Compiled it...still no joy. Uninstalled that. Went to Slacky.eu and downloaded a precompiled gc 7.1 and installed that... Still getting the same error. What am I doing wrong? Is it looking for some sort of development headers? If so...whereinheck do I get those?

Issues with pdf output and rasterized effects.

Howdy Folks, I'm using 0.47 on OS X (10.5.8/Leopard). I've run into a problems trying to export PDFs. Here is a test file I'm working with: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1901170/Inkscape%20Tests/test.svg If I save as a pdf with the following options: - Convert texts to paths (checked) - Rasterized filter effects (unchecked) - Resolution for rasterization (600 dpi) - Export area is drawing (unchecked) - Export area is page (checked) I produce the following pdf output: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1901170/Inkscape%20Tests/test-not_rasterized.pdf which looks right, but eliminates the blurred elements. Next I try to save using the following options in order to preserve the blurred portion of the figure: If I save as a pdf with the following options: - Convert texts to paths (checked) - Rasterized filter effects (checked) - Resolution for rasterization (600 dpi) - Export area is drawing (unchecked) - Export area is page (checked) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1901170/Inkscape%20Tests/test-not_rasterized.pdf Basically checking "rasterize filtered effects". Color Management on OSX

Inkscape 0.47 r22583 Built Nov 24 2009 OSX 10.5.8 None of the color management options work. The Inkscape Preferences -> Colour Management tab has a drop-down list for Display Profile. This only lists <None> as an option. The mouse-over says that it checks four different directories. I have confirm that all four directories exist and at least one of them contains valid ICC profiles (e.g. they work correctly in Scribus). The Device Profile drop-down on the same tab, has no options, appears to be greyed out and has no mouse-over information. Is this a bug or am I missing something? Any help or suggestions appreciated. I'm trying to create a CMYK compatible PNG file for import into a PDF that is going to a professional printers. Many thanks Chris

Command line

Hi, all. Apparently the command line interface of Inkscape is not working properly. I usually export PNG files from command line because is much more quickly than open every single SVG to export in the GUI interface. After the upgrade to the 0.47 version I cannot export the PNG this way anymore. There is no error message. It simply output nothing. I use Inkscape on a Windows XP Service Pack 3. The command line that I usually use to export the files is: inkscape -f file.svg -e file.png -h 64 -w 64 I review the options in the WEB about the command line and appears to me that nothing was changed from the older version. Drawing spirals

I have only begun to work on inkscape and was using version .46 I did a few drawings making spirals and was really pleased with result, even for a beginner like me it was quite easy. Then I saw there was a new version and thought it mus be better and installed it yesterday. Now I cannot seem to draw spirals any more. When I click on the pencil and then on spiro path and smoothing at 100pct I can only get straight lines whatever I do. Is it a setting I need to change ? I do hope someone can help me or I will need to uninstall the new version and go back to the old one. cheers, Jo

I downloaded the latest and greatest and am having a problem. I press shift-ctrl-d and it exits. I also try document properties and I get an immediate exit. I created 3 new windows, different types, and try document properties. All of them go away -- no crash message -- something like an immediate exit. Shows built Nov 21, 2009 (0.47) I'm on Win7-64bit, but its only a 32bit client. Am I alone in this? Some sort of corruption somehow? -l

It wasn't a random random version, the goal was to get 0.47 final in th 9.10 repo but the last major bug took longer than expected to be fixed (and obviously 9.10 got released first). We're going to attempt to see if they'll SRU it. Either way, we will have a ppa in the near future which will offer it for a few ubuntu releases. Parallel lines brush?

Hi all, I would like to have a sort of "hatched" parallel line brush (useful for representing busses in diagrams). This is what I could get to: * Draw three parallel lines ** (using the Bezier tool - click to set start point, hold CTRL to keep line aligned horizontally, move cursor to other end and double click to complete line) * Select all three lines, group * select group and scale it horizontally, such that the length becomes much shorter that the width of the group * Select bezier tool, draw a line made of horizontal, then vertical, then horizontal segment again * Now select the group again, and choose Object / Raise to Top. * Select both the group and the line, and choose Extensions / Generate from Path / Pattern along path * Choose live preview, select "repeated, stretched" copies of the pattern, and set all numeric parameters to 0. The horizontal segment of the object having the effect applied to then looks close to what I want, but not the vertical one.. Any ideas on how to achieve this in Inkscape properly? Referencing another .svg file.

Hello: I am using Inkscape to create button icons. Many of them are simple compositions of other images. For example, to make a 'new-window' icon I would like to reference the .svg file for a plus sign over a reference to the .svg file of a window. Currently I create a new .svg file and copy-in the required elements. But, this makes it tedious to change an element (the plus-sign, for example) because I have to visit all of the files into which I copied it. So, is it possible to place a live reference to one .svg file from another. I am stuck on RedHat 4 using Inkscape 0.44 (Pity me.) Bill

Render bloks aplications

hi, i'm having a problem with some kde aplications like konqueror file manager ok even OpenOffice. this aplications stops for a few secconds continously this only happens when rendering with inkscape, i'm rendering a huge image with some gausain blurs so this takes a lot of time where it's nearly impossible to use my normal applications any one has any ideas? sorry for my bad english -- <<< this email was written with 100% recyclable electrons>>>

Just for fun I created an Inkscape file with an aqua square on it and saved it as svg. Then I addressed the file name in my Firefox browser. It showed it OK. I have read that reading svg files was promised in IE 9 for Windows users. Any of you who have Windows 7 and/or IE 9 can you verify that this is so? Does anyone know if the new bamboo pen / pen and touch tablets are supported in linux? I just bought a bamboo (the previous model) and works great out of the box in Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10, but I couldn't find information about support of the new models. The old bamboo and bamboo fun work, but what about the new ones? Thanks in advance Gez.

hey I got a bamboo one just to get me started and quite honestly don't use it when it comes to vector drawing. the mouse is a much better tool for the kind of neurotic precision i crave. apart from that it's much better than a mouse either for pixel work or even for essential day-to-day computer use. It takes some getting used to though. double click was frustrating for the first week.

I love using my wacom tablets with Inkscape. I used it with the calligraphy tool to create a background for my twitter page, and some nuances for my avatar. PDF export does not produce any file

Hi, I just tried the latest Inkscape-0.47pre4-1.win32.7z, and when I try to export my drawing to pdf nothing happens. No pdf is created and no error message appears. Any idea what is going wrong? Jef

Hi, I'm using inkscape on 2 PCs with dual core processors. Sometimes, when the work is getting huge and complex, the CPU has to work a lot. Unfortunately inkscape uses always only one of the 2 'cores', so the whole CPU works only with 52-55 %. Things are becoming very slow this way. Is there a possibility to change this? Regards, Hago

Hi all, I am trying to build a humongous pdf for a poster made up of about 10000 svg files of same width but varying height. I would like to be able to automatically tile the different svg and pdf (or ps) export the file to print in a plotter. How can I do that? Albert.

Barcode problem solved.

On an earlier version of IS 47 on Xubuntu the numbers at the bottom of an ISBN barcode were scrambled. On my current Slackware 13 install of IS 47 pre 4 this problem is solved. lxml and stuff.

Compiled pre4 successfully . Some things like perfect bound cover and bar code don't work. Messages reference lxml in each case. So I iinstalled lxml. Still no joy. I started a recompile. I note on ./configure that I get the message "Internal Python skipped" Is this the root of the problem? I do have Python on my system. Pixel Perfect Inkscape

I'm using Inkscape 4.7 Pre 3 on OS X Leopard. I'm designing for the web, so for the most part, I'd like to have integer X and Y values for my shapes. Editing each point every time I drop a shape is frustrating. I've found that I can set the grid to 1px with major lines at 5px and Inkscape will tend to to the right thing when drawing rectangles or using the pen tool, but not always. There are still times when I have to edit X and Y by entering it into the spinner. Also, if I group objects and clone them. Not all of the objects retain an integer X/Y. They are off by a little bit. Are there any other ways to tell Inkscape to round to the nearest pixel? Alan Gutierrez
