Cannot open svg files

I am using the latest build on Win XP and every time I preview or try to open an svg file Inkscape crashes with an 'internal error'. If I try and import an svg, Inkscape crashes with no error, it just closes itself. Inkscape and good causes

Hey all, I decided to pass this along as it is in the same basic spirit of open source with the attitude of doing something for a cause greater than one's self (our global community). Recently there was a contest held on DeviantART to promote breast cancer awareness and early prevention that was sponsored by DeviantART, MGM (yes, the studio), and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. With over 1,400 submissions spanning all kinds of art forms imaginable, the Grand Prize Winner chosen was by one of our Inkscapers on DA (and yes she used Inkscape for this), Loraine A. Baird, aka QuicheLoraine. Drawing problem

I want to learn to use Inkscape in conjunction with Scribus to put out a newsletter. I want to create a box to go around a photograph and then import it into Scribus. In Inkscape, I click on the rectangle tool and drag as instructed, and nothing seems to happen. Then I scroll the window, and find that I've drawn a box below the desktop or canvas or whatever it's called. How can I cause the program to draw the box where I click and drag? I uninstalled the program and downloaded and installed it again, but the same thing happens in the second installation. Joe Ward

JavaFX Exporter

The other day I grabbed the latest code from the trunk and built Inkscape and installed it. The JavaFX exporter was there but the resulting syntax isn't valid JavaFX 1.0 syntax. It looks to be from some point in the RC line of the SDK. Is this being worked on and if so is there an ETA when the 1.0 compatible exporter will be available? Thanks. -- Gregg Bolinger

Snapping to Edge of Paths

Inkscape to Blender:Planetary gears

Original gears made in Inkscape with the gear effect, then the .svg's are imported into Blender, extruded and animated. Hi all. I am new in this mailing list and I want some help on writing a little script that I despereted need. I have a huge SVG file. Its resolution is 20000+ by 38000+ and I need to slice it in little PNG peaces with 180x150 pixels. I wrote an batch file (I am a Windows user) that automate this but since it calls the inkscape in the command line to every peace that need to be exported it is very, very, very slow. Some one can guide me in writing a script that could do this in a little less time? I am currently using the version 0.46 of Inkscape in a Windows XP. Regards. -- Alessandro Antonello

trouble setting correct page size with command-line postscript export

Hi, I have some modeling software which is able to export to SVG. Unfortunately, the SVG exporter isn't perfect, and the documents it exports do not have a width or height set on the top-level SVG element. I'm now trying to use Inkscape from the command line to export these document as PS or EPS, and it understandably is giving me this warning message: ** (inkscape:13070): WARNING **: Could not set export-bbox-page option for this export. And the document that it returns has what looks like inkscapes default page width and height set. The same is true if I use -l to export as plain SVG. I can, however, still query the document using -W and -H to get its bounds, and I can use -D with the PNG exporter to get a raster of the entire document. I'd like to do the same thing with PS export, but I can't seem to figure out how. Is this possible? Right now, the best solution I have been able to come up with is using inkscape to query to documents width and height and inserting them into the document root using sed before finally attempting to use inkscape to export as PS. I think there must be a cleaner solution than this, though. Manually setting the width and height of the generated PS document using command-line flags would be enough, but I can't seem to get it to work. I'd appreciate any guidance anyone can offer. Command line Inkscape under OSX

I have installed Inkscape.app under Mac OSX Leopard. Inkscape works just great as a mac app. I have Inkscape 0.46-devel, built jun 23 2008. I have OS X version 10.5.5. Now I want to build the LilyPond web site (www.lilypond.org). This process requires a command line inkscape in order to render some graphics. When I try to run the scripts, I get the following message: inkscape --export-area-drawing --export-png=de/graphics/annotate-example-1.png --export-background-opacity=0 de/graphics/annotate-example-1.svg make[1]: inkscape: Command not found I've tried locating inkscape from the command line shell> which inkscape and it can't be found. I've also tried to find a file named inkscape on my Mac using Finder. I can't find a file named inkscape (which is what I assume would be needed to run inkscape from the command line). I do find Inkscape.app. Is there a path spec I need to add, or a symlink, or something of the sort? Any pointers on how to make Inkscape available from the command line? Thanks, Carl Sorensen

Hi, To finish my project, aimed to describe a GUI application from SVG , I definitely need a way defining type of GUI element when drawing from inkscape (button, label,scrollbar...) . I am using the id to name the component eg (startstop) and I need another way categorize it (eg button). I do not want the following form : id=rtstopButton, because I would need string treatment when parsing svg to remove "Button" Have you got another idea/way ? Best Regards S.Ancelot

A little PR for the Inkscape Docs team: We recently got our Inkscape Manual (the fruit of our Book Sprint) put on Lulu (http://www.lulu.com/content/4617381). You've probably seen the article by the Russian on the inkscape.org which has a link - if not, check it out! The published book, while being a reasonably finished work of good quality, is not comprehensive. We would like it to be more so. Here are some things that will help us to continue with this work: 1. Sales of the current version (somewhat limited 1st EDITION!!!!) on Lulu will help us afford a future Booksprint. 2. Contributions to the manual on our Floss Manuals workspace are greatly needed. Of course, as this needs some coordination, it's best to start on the inkscape-docs list (signup at lists.sourceforge.net) to find out where to begin. 3. Magical powers to generate whatever good thing we want without much effort. If you can help with any of these things, that would be GREAT! In particular, getting word out and posting the link to the Lulu store would be of great benefit. JF

How to resize/reposition a group of objects

I'm currently editing some graphs by using Inkscape and am finding it a slow process to resize the graph. What I would like to do is resize the plot area (which is a few paths) to become bigger and not necessarily proportional, while the axis elements (such as the labels - a mix of paths and texts) are merely moved and do not change in size at all. I can do this by first resizing the plot area normally using the selection tool. Then I can make sure at least one of the axis elements is moved to the limits of the new size (e.g. the top and bottom of the plot area) and then use the distribute tool to evenly arrange them without a change in size. This can be quite fiddly and takes quite a fair chunk of time. Is there some method that I can use in Inkscape currently to speed this up? Alternatively would an addition to object properties - maybe a 'maintain size' property - be a worthwhile idea? If this is enabled on an object and a group resize is being performed, then the object should merely be moved and not resized. I can see some problems occuring with this however (e.g. what would occur if two horizontally laid out objects were to be resized in the vertical direction). What is everyone's thoughts on this? NEW: Auto smooth nodes

Thanks to Thomas Holder for the patch: Auto smooth nodes: a new "auto" node type was added, similar to the one Xara Xtreme has. An auto node is a smooth node which automatically adjusts (rotates and stretches) its handles when this node or its neighbors are moved. This adjustment (same as what you get when you convert node type to Smooth, but continuous) keeps the curve at this node as smooth as possible. It feels a bit like Spiro paths; although not as smooth as a Spiro, it may often be preferable as it works without any Path Effect. Whenever you manually adjust the handles of an auto node or drag the adjacent curve, it loses its auto state and becomes smooth; for this reason, it is recommended to edit smooth nodes with the node handles hidden via a toggle button on the controls bar. Auto nodes are represented by little circles, as opposed to smooth/symmetric nodes (squares) and cusp nodes (diamonds). Hi all, Maybe there are people out here that have time to kill and want to help on Inkscape but don't want to or can't code C++. I'd like to remind you of this years 'Test Suite' GSoC project, which was imo very succesfull. We need artists that can provide SVG files and PNG renders of them; so no coding required! The testsuite can be found here: https://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/inkscape/gsoc-testsuite For some documentation see: http://www.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/TestingInkscape ("rendering tests") What this testsuite does is provide numerous svg files that are rendered by Inkscape to PNGs. The PNGs are then compared to a reference PNG and Inkscape will score a pass or fail for that particular "testcase" svg file. It is a very nifty procedure/tool to see what Inkscape can and cannot do. Moreover, it can be used to track regressions. So where can you help? Add testcase files! If you've created some crazy drawing that uses complicated SVG structures, or LPEs, or perhaps you have a simple drawing with 'corner cases' (lines with zero length, rectangles with zero length, closed paths with start and end markers, etc...).... those are the files we need ! Note that we need a lot of files where Inkscape does something non-trivial but does it correctly! This way we can ensure that will work in the next version. If you can also provide a reference PNG of the correct rendering, that would be awesome :) Check the testcases directory, perhaps your testcase is already there. You can post the testcases on launchpad, mail it to me, or find another way of getting it to us. Ask the maillist if you'd like SVN write access, if you've shown good work in two patches, it will be granted to you. I'm happy to answer questions about the testsuite, but it's perhaps better to ask Jasper for details (cc'ed in this mail). Cheers, Johan

Problem displaying unicode characters from eps file.

Inkscape 0.46 Linux Ubuntu I have prepared a diagram using unicode characters (Greek). When I save this diagram as eps, Inkscape displays the correct Greek characters. However, when I import the eps file into non-Inkscape documents, or just display the file with an application other than Inkscape, the characters display as English characters. For example, Delta displays as r4 and lambda displays as w. troubles with adobe RGB printer

Hello, I have a svg file made of black, white and blue (RGBA: 225588ff). When I export the image as a png and send to the printer, I get a very different bleu from what I expected. Talking with the printer, I understant he always assume Adobe RGB. Is there a way to set up inkscape so that I would work with Adobe RGB and have some confidence that color on my screen and on the print will be rather close? Thank you for your help

Opacity not 100% gets lost

I have a solid color background. Then a layer above that is a pattern of repeated logos. All are selected as a group. When I choose Fill and Stroke and change Opacity to less than 100% the final PDF doesn't show that layer anymore. (Even 99% does not work.) Xpdf shows it drawn but then it is immediately replaced with the solid background. In inkscape itself, it appears correctly. When I change opacity back to 100% it works again. I am looking for documentation or tool to repeat a small SVG image to create a background pattern. For example if my image is "X". I want it repeated like: X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X (Or something similar to that. Hopefully your email client doesn't break my nice formatting above.) I don't want to do this manually (of copying and aligning each image). And I need the final version to keep the "scalable" properties just in case I need to resize. Thanks Jeremy C. Reed

OpenClipart.org - Are uploads working?

CorelDraw importation with uniconvertor

I try to get CorelDraw cdr files importation working with uniconvertor on Mandriva Linux. uniconvertor is installed and working fine (the binary is called uniconvertor). Hello list, I'm fairly sure that what I'm trying to accomplish is quite common, but I don't know how to do it in inkscape: Say I have a complex group of paths (of different widths and so) and I want a certain area of that path to not be drawn. Currently what I do is I create a second layer on top and move a white, filled rectangle above the places which I do not want to have drawn. This has one problem, however: When the svg is exported as png, the "not drawn" area is (of course!) white instead of transparent. If I make it transparent, however, it will (also of course!) not cover the background. I've played around with the AND and XOR functions of the Path menu, but I don't quite get how they work. Sometimes everything disappears, sometimes nothing happens. How do you do this the *right* way? Thanks in advance, Johannes

Batch resize of .svg files.

Hi list. I was wondering if I could perform a batch resize of many small .svg files using Inkscape's command-line arguments? The --help doesn't state much about this, and the only options having to do with size seem to be width and height, or should I use something else like ImageMagik? I'm on Linux, by the way.

Hey Tavmjong, I bought your book! http://www.informit.com/store/product.aspx?isbn=0131357948 and now I really want a printed copy too. I tried uploading it to lulu.com as a private project to purchase a print copy, but it can't be printed there because the fonts are not embedded. Just wondering if you (or your publisher) has plans to make it available as print on demand? I know a school that also wants to buy a couple of copies for the school library. Tiled clone to create radial symmetry

Inkscape Users, I am relatively new to Inkscape, and I'm trying to learn how to use Inkscape's tiled clone feature. What I would like to do is take an upside down triangle that is tall and skinny, and rotate it around it's bottom point so as to create a radial pattern. Sort of like the rising sun flag of old Japan. So far I have figured out that I can set the number of columns to 15 and rotate them 22.5 degrees to get a total of 16 copies, including the original. That produces the right number of copies at the right angle. But, I can not get them positioned right. The settings of the "Shift" tab completely elude me. I thought if I experimented enough I would eventually figure out what they are doing and dial in on the right settings. No such luck. Each experimental setting scatters the triangles all over the screen in what might as well be random dispersals for all I can tell. How do I get each triangle to have it's bottom point stay at the centre of the radial pattern? Thank you for any advice. -- Dave M G

ABLEConf this weekend in AZ (and a request for images)

Hey all, This Saturday, September 20, 2008 in Tempe, AZ (USA) the first ever ABLEConf will be taking place. I will be doing a presentation as well as Q&A session on Inkscape there (in addition to the many other speakers that will be there that day). If you are in AZ I'd recommend coming if possible. Additionally, if you are in AZ and not in the Metro Phoenix area, people from around the state are trying to arrange ride shares to reduce the cost for everyone making a trip. So far I have mostly gathered illustration and some design work from some Inkscape users via deviantart, however a lot of people have not responded to messages (a lot of people don't log in as much as they used to). So... that leads to the following request: If you have any images created/edited/composited with any FLOSS tools such as Inkscape, The GIMP, Krita, Karbon14, Blender, Scribus, or your other favorite open source apps please get in contact with me directly. We'd love to display your work and credit you appropriately (it's a great way to get free advertising if you're looking for contract work). Note that were looking for Illustrations, Design (web, logos, marketing materials, etc), diagrams, blueprints, photography (obviously color corrected, manipulated, etc), industrial or trade related images, and the list could go on. A focus of the conference and this image gallery is to show the small businesses how versatile and powerful the tools available are. JPG-Import

Hi, I mostly use the newest builds from inkscape.modevia.com/win32/ For some time now I'm not able to import JPGs bigger than 30 kb into Inkscape. I first have to save them as PNGs, then I can import the images. The last build with which the JPG-import worked normally, was 19770 from august 30. Is this a known thing, or is it a misbehaviour just on my machine? Regards, Hago

OT? SMIL seems dead, alternatives?

I registered with smil@...2562... I was notified of my acceptance but my questions but they were never posted. There is no SMIL player in the Ubuntu repositories. I don't really want to manually compile one, or use a windows based one, or pay for one. SMIL just seems unsupported. From what I have read, streaming video has made SMIL less desirable. I don't have any real experience with it but it looks like a great idea. I would love to be able to use this to animate my SVGs and to control the audio. I could convert the video after to another format for mass viewing. Is there another alternative to SMIL?, something that can be used to dictate the timing of individual images and audio files? Sorry if this is off topic-Patrick

Windows printing problem

Some time shortly after the Devlibs update, the windows printing went wierd again. To test I drew a simple rectangular object of 1/2 a page or so and saved it. Then I printed it to a pdf pseudo printer to generate a pdf, first using vector printing, then bitmap. The svg is fine, the bitmap pdf is fine, but the vector pdf comes out scaled down to approx 40% of the original. I tried this with the latest svn to make sure it wasn't fixed and the problem is still there. I tried to install that extension in inkscape 0.47svn but it refuses to work. Apparently the .inx formatting changed and the extension hasn't a valid code for the new inkscape. Could you please ask the autor of the script to fix it? I'd really like to test it since CMYK output is one of the things that are keeping me from adopting inkscape as my main (and only) vector illustration application for print. I'd love to see this extension as part of inkscape. A separated CMYK tiff exporter using the output of this script would be terrific. I'd also like to know if the CMS code is taken in account to do the separations. If not, maybe the separate+ GIMP plugin would be a good place to start.

SVG web kick start?

This might be a really dumb idea but here goes....... I wrote a script in Python using urllib2 to retrieve data I need for my business. I wonder if we could create a scraperbot(and I would need help) that would read the text component of SVG only sites. Perhaps we could then mirror all this data somewhere else so that the search engines would index it? I bet this would not count as duplicate content as the first SVG site was not indexed anyways. In effect I guess what I am proposing is a mini-me-google bot, if the search engines won't index it we could do this for them. -Patrick

Animation via png frames from Inkscape

Hi, I have been thrashing around the net looking for a solution and thought to ask here because I can't get no satisfaction ;) I want to draw the frames of a small animation (ajax throbber) with Ink. Ideally I would do this: 1. Draw the frames - all on one layer. Use tricks like interpolate etc. 2. Select everything and press *magic button* which would a. Split each object to it's own layer. So I can at least pull it into Gimp and animate/export from there. OR b. Allow me to export each to a png *without* anything in the background so I can go directly to imagemagick to make the final gif. The problem with things as I find them now (and I hope I am missing the obvious) is that exporting includes stuff that's underneath the bounding box. I want a clean single object/layer in my PNG per frame, not one including all the stuff around/behind it. A kind of 'batch export each item while hiding *all* others each time' option. Any hope ? \d
