There's a lot to say about this new release...you might prefer to see it immediately..so, start from here: http://inkscapegallery.net/home I worked hard for three months to build gimpgallery (http://gimpgallery.net)and it has been recently released... So i had many ideas about how to improve inkscape gallery, i was tired and anxious at the same time... The second feeling won and i'm here to list what i've done in the last days: *The home page* It is a complete section with 4 subsections, "from the inkscape's world", "highlight on", "special sections" and "a little taste of inkscpae gallery". *4 new sections called:* fresh, mostvoted, older and popular *The "inkscape galleria"* it is a slideshow made with a jquery plugin labeled "galleria",indeed. It is quite smart and fast, just to give you another way to see what is best in inkscape gallery: images! *The user's "inkscape galleria"* Every user has his own "galleria" , just click on the link in the title block of each image content *Some layout improvements* In a big website you will always have something you fixed with a workaround, not in the best way, in other words... I've found better solutions now *The "from the inkscape world" section* It is the upper section in the home page. This was not an hard work but is important i mean, just because i'd like to work together with other inkscape based website. *The wysiwyg editor* we have a simple wysiwyg editor now. It works only for logged in users, anyway *The antispam framework* we've never had critical spam problems, you can directly publish in inkscape gallery only when logged in, indeed. we have user profiles, with an email field and i wanted to keep it safe from spam even if you need to be logged in to view the user profiles... (maybe not anymore in the future...) Anyway, the email field is protected from spam, now *The gimpgallery promo* I wanted to make you know about gimp gallery. It is another image gallery website for a free image editor and it is even more advanced compared to inkscape gallery, actually. It is freshly born and quite empty, i had to borrow some images from inkscape gallery so, if you're a gimper, go there to publish your images! This is what, i hope you to like it, there's always something to fix, to improve but that's inevitable (especially on IE) :-) i'm planning the next steps to bring inkscape gallery to the next release! Hi, I just want to check that there won't be an Inkscape booth at Lug Radio UK. Is that right? Also, is anybody planning on setting up a booth at Linux World? I know there has been one at least once in the past. The publisher of my book is willing to send copies to be displayed at these (or any other) conferences. Inkscape and Latex fonts

Hello all, I use inkscape to create my latex diagrams, then I export them to eps or pdf to include them in slides or papers. One thing that bothers me is that the fonts are different (latex and inkscape fonts). Is there a way to draw the text in the inkscape diagram with the font used on the document the diagram is included? Install 46 on Slackware 12.1

It seems that even the latest Slackware is missing a jillion libraries needed by Inkscape. But I note there are complied rpm versions for other versions of Linux. Are these self contained? Or do they need the jillion libraries at runtime? SVG source images get goofed up when combined

I often use Inkscape to build network diagrams. I've collected a number of SVG images (mostly from Tango Icons) which I use as objects in those diagrams. On my Ubuntu Hardy box today I discovered that once I get a number of objects into a document, if I import a single new object, the colors on it get all messed up upon import. This never happened before. Opening the object alone, or importing it into a new document works fine. Have any of you seen this behavior in .46? If so, have you figured out a work-around? Might it have something to do with the (new?) color management stuff? I chose not to attach files to the list because they are rather large, but I would be happy to send examples to anyone interested in exploring this off-list. -- -Regards- -Quentin Hartman-

Word balloon tail fill question

Hi, I have an issue with creating the tails on word balloons for a comic with Inkscape. Keep in mind I'm a brand new user, so I'm sure the solution is a simple one. I use the ellipse tool to create the word balloons themselves, and I use the Bezier tool to create the "tails" to/from the balloons. My problem is that I'm creating the word balloons and tails *on top of* art (utilizing the Layer tool), and I can't find a way to fill the tails solid with white, to prevent the artwork from showing through. I understand how to fill the ellipses themselves and keep them solid, but the tails I can't seem to figure out. Can someone help? Inkscape to Silverlight

Hello all, I'm using the xaml save function in Inkscape to create maps to use in silverlight. The two problems I have ran into are: 1. Inkscape saves the name of an element as name="" instead of x:name="". 2. The lablel of an element is completely dropped instead of converting it into the tag="" attribute in xaml. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can make this change? Thanks in advance

"chisel effect" with filters?

I am using a recent nightly build (and really like the filter effect defaults provided). One think I can't figure out is how to add an exponent to a blurred layer to make embosses more like chisels. Attached is an example from xara that I am trying to emulate. Any suggestions from the filter effect gods? -Rob A>

Wacom Graphire 4 nuisance

If I draw an object, e.g. a filled Rectangle, and then press F1 for the selector tool, I can click anywhere inside the rectangle to have it selected and the modifier-drags appear on the corners. previously (opensuse 10.3) I could do the very same with the mouse, and to my knowledge, this is also the intended behavior. Now, I can draw the object as before, but after switching to the selection tool, I cannot select the object with the pen. I either have to lasso it by dragging a bounding box around it, or 'double-click'/triple-click or whatever on it, but not too fast, otherwise it switches back to edit mode (F4 in the case of my rectangle) If I click on an object with the mouse, the mouse cursor remains the same as by simply hovering over an object, i.e. the hand. If I hover (not press) with the pen, I have the same hand, but once I press on the object, the pointer-cursor reappears. Does anybody have an Idea as why this is happening. Calligraphic tool Thinning/thickenning not working at all

Hi, I'm an Inkscape newbie (but not to vector graphics GUIs). I've found a great (and short) tutorial on simulating engravings with Inkscape ( http://www.inkscape.org/screenshots/gallery/inkscape-0.46-engraving1.png). I'm sure most of you have read/seen it, so I hope someone can help me out on this. I've been following all the steps without any trouble up to "Thinning/thickenning". When I press ALT and drag the cursor (either with Wacom pen or mouse) I get a new path, no thickenning or thinning anywhere... I've tried it right after drawing the paths, after unselecting and selecting them, after unselecting and selecting just one, with the mouse, the pen, the eraser,... getting always de same result. On the status bar I get the hint inviting me to press ALT+drag, but won't work for me... Any clues on what's going on and why can't I use this promising tool?! I'm using freshly installed Inkscape 0.46 on Kubuntu Hardy (8.04), with a Wacom Intuos A3, and brand new PC. Thank you in advance. Cheers, P.S.: this is my first post ever, anywhere. Thank you very much for your replies. it was a flowed unflowed text problem. I did not know there were differences in creation method between click and click and drag for text. thank you for teaching it to me! this also solved some problems I had with pattern-filling! thank you.. it is a great improvement for me, even if it would be nice if coders will be able to let all the types (flowed - unflowed and coverted to text) work the same way.. anyone of them as qualities and difects.. but there is no way to use all the qualities of the three. Inkshape does not work on MacOSX

I run system 10.4.11 on an iBook G4 (this model: http://support.apple.com/specs/ibook/iBook_G4_Late_2004.html). I've downloaded Inkshape and followed the described procedure. When I open the program, another program called X11 also opens. A few seconds after, Inkshape quits, leaving only X11 open. This happen every time. I've tried to download Inkshape again a few months later, and the situation is still the same. bern

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone might be up to manning a booth for LugRadio Live UK? http://lugradio.org/live/UK2008/ It is coming up fairly soon, but as of the beginning of the week they still had some room for exhibiting. I won't be able to make it, but the one in the USA was very good. If anyone could make it there to have an Inkscape presence, we could get together demo art, fliers that can be printed, etc.

And how to unflow it if necessary? please notice that I've got the italian version of inkscape. I wanted to switch to the english one, but I don't know how to do that as well.. !! Thanks ROb for the example.. it is working, so that helped me understanding that my problem is nor a corrupted installation nor a wrong procedure. Can it be due to font choosen? Tracking dependencies

Hi guys, There's a side issue that's been kicking around for a while now. Inkscape doesn't really have it's dependencies explicitly listed. So things may or may not work for certain users trying to build on certain platforms, OS versions, etc. For example, I put in a patch recently that uses g_timeout_add_seconds (). In the documentation on it, the function is listed as "Since 2.14". So that bumps the requirement to have glib2 >= 2.14. However that would make things no longer work on Fedora 7 and instead bump Fedora 8 as the minimum there. Since that's only a year old, the might be a bit too soon to bump. Anyway, this highlights a need we have to be tracking what we bump and what impact it will have. This is something that even non- programmers can help with, so I've added a quick section and link to the Help Wanted wiki page: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ HelpWanted#Determining_Dependencies A first step would be if people skimmed through the glib and gtk+ docs looking for newer functions. Then adding those that are in our codebase to the "Functions Used" table on the wiki could really help: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ Tracking_Dependencies#Functions_Used Then if someone has a distro they care about, they can add it and/or fill out details for at at http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Tracking_Dependencies#Distros Finally, the developers can get a handle on creeping dependencies, and perhaps add a few #ifdef's or alternate methods where needed in order to keep things sane.

Hello everybody! Does anybody know how to use text as object-mask? I need to cut a text in a picture so that the text would actually be transparent! The goal is easily achieved converting text in path, and grouping it with a background, and then using it as a mask for the picture. But in this way I'm loosing the chance to change what is written in a second moment. Reading some references, I saw that text objects should work as any other objects about masking, but they they don't. What am I missing? Lucio

SVG and the web Part II, subheading SVG vs Flash

Hey Everyone There was a great thread about SVG and the web a few months ago. I re-read it but I am still a little confused about something. I have a long term project that will involve charting and mathematical processing of peaks that are plotted out. An SVG based chart might be just the thing. The scientists that would use this could be prompted to download Firefox as this online tool that I am hoping to create could save them a lot of money over the desktop versions out there, so IE is not an issue. So to get to the point I was just wondering about the state of SVG support now and guesses on the state a year from now. I would also love to make this site SVG only, any guesses as to when someone could make a fully functional SVG only site? Google does not index SVG only sites but Google can basically only see text. Do you think I would get blacklisted if I created a text only site and found a way to re-route Google through browser identification? Any thoughts on other work arounds? I am also trying to learn about open source flash. With proprietary flash distributed so far, does (open or closed) flash present a serious danger?If not is there another? I know SVG is great but I heard that Beta was also better then VHS, the best technology does not always win, what is standing in our way? My plotting application would be an enormous investment of time, is it possible that SVG will end up another Beta? Please delete the "subheading SVG vs Flash" if you have other SVG web thoughts, I loved the last thread and I would love to read any discussions pertaining to SVG and the web. ThX-Patrick

It is! (When I apply the mask I don't actually see the bitmap) I even tryed selecting all the stuff in a different order.. no way! :( Lucio ...Yes, I did try it. Thanks Rob, but.. did you try it? Is it working for you? It doesn't for me. Neither in home computer, nor in the one I have got where I work.. As far as i use some text, grouped or not with some background, the bitmap just disappears completely when masking it. If this mailing list is not appropriate for my request, please kindly suggest another forum. The idea of the book cover is to include the FSF gnu, McKusick's daemon, and Ewing's penguin. Exporting Inkscape SVG to Corel and other apps

Greetings I made a logo for a client who lives in other city. I'm sending him the source vectors for him to print and work the logo there, so I need to be sure about Inkscape SVG support in other apps. The logo is all paths and includes a shadow (blur effect). Setting ICC profiles in Preferences

I have Inkscape 0.46 (with liblcms_1.dll in C:\Program Files\Inkscape\ installtion folder) on Windows XP SP2 (and all patches until present). In the **Color Settings** control panel , I have set the device profiles as follows: @ 'Displays' -- BenQ E2200W (Digital) on Radeon 9200 Series @ 'Printers' -- Epson IJ Printer 06 on Epson Stylus CX6900f (multifunction) @ 'Scanners' -- Epson Stylus CX6900f/CX7000f/DX7000f scanner - reflective The **Color Management** page in the **Inkscape Preferences** dialogue neither displays correctly nor allows profiles to be specified. In case the embedded pixmap is stripped by the listserv: @ **Display profile** display <none> and a profile cannot be set. (Fallback is to mark 'Retrieve profile from display' but I do not know if this is actually happening. There is a manufacturer supplied profile for my LCD monitor. @ **Device profile** drop-down is distorted and does not allow selection of the inkjet printer or an industry CMYK profile such as SWOP ( US Web Coated). I would like to use colour management in Inkscape if I can, particularly to preview graphics intended for a particular press and paper stock. But first some answers to a few questions: @ What is Inkscape's working colour profile, if any? Adobe RGB 1998? @ Where do you store ICC *.icc or *.icm profile files on the Windows version of Inkscape? Or does it use the Windows system profiles in C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\color ? Any advice about getting the colour-management functionality in Inkscape to work will be gratefully received. Vinyl cutters, Direct control, Suggested models

Hey Everyone There is a discussion taking place on the developers list right now pertaining to adding control of Vinyl Cutters to Inkscape. It is in the very early stages, the developers are not sure whether to add direct support to Inkscape or to an upstream printing application such as CUPS. Although I am on the developers list I have contributed precisely nothing to Inkscape, so I can hardly call myself a developer. I don't know what is the best way to approach these issues but I feel confident that I can decipher the command set used to control a cutter. I would like to do so and then turn this over to our talented developers. I would like to buy a cutter for this purpose. What would be the most ideal model to start with? I am hoping to spend under $500 U.S for this. Once we determine a good model to start with, I will likely search for a used one. If anyone has a popular model that they no longer need perhaps I could purchase it from you, could you please post the model number in this thread? I am short of money this month but I should be ready sometime in July or August. Thanks in advance-Patrick

inkscape shortcuts on non-qwerty keyboard

I searched the archives for some solution to my problem, but couldn't find any, so if I overlooked it, please point me to the appropriate thread. I'm using inkscape on KDE with a qwertz (german) keyboard layout. Some shortcuts, like "#" to toggle the grid, don't work, as the corresponding key differs from the US qwerty layout. As the default.xml contains the right bindings (didn't change anything there), I think it's gtk that doesn't get tha mapping right. Is there some viable way to adapt the gtk settings to my keyboard layout? Of course I could learn the US layout for the shortcuts or alter the keybindings in the default.xml, but both workarounds seem to be a bit of an overkill just to use the default shortcuts. And I'm not quite fond of installing a whole Gnome just to have a Control Center where I can change the keyboard layout. thanks in advance

Clipped bitmap --> closed path filled with patterh

I have been producing a series of diagrams illustrating the effect of the various rendering intents. I found an SVG of the CIE 1930 chromaticity diagram and dismantled it to provide a background for my purposes. The familiar (closed) horseshoe shape is clipped from a rectangular bitmap of the radial colours of the visual spectrum: going around the outside border anti-clockwise, the rays from the white point (centre) to the border are R, Y, G, C, B, M and back to R (i.e. RGB and CMY interleaved). Trouble is this doesn't translate to PDF via the Cairo processor, or to PS and PDF via Ghostscript. The clipping of the bitmap is lost and the the border path just appears as an object on top of the full rectangular bitmap. The text labels are aliased in a very ugly way when I try to output to PNG. So I thought to convert the bitmap to a pattern, then fill the horseshoe path with the pattern. No joy. The bitmap turns into a slightly smaller rectangular pattern that is divided into four unequal quadrants, that is, it is tiled. It looks nothing like the demonstration on page 190 (204 of 341) of //Inkscape: Guide to a Vector Drawing Program//. This shows a picture of a 1920s couple getting into an early MG sports car, then the same picture used as a fill in a circular object, then the pattern translated to change the details included in the fill. If that pic was mine, after changing to a pattern, the pattern would be smaller than the pixmap, and part of the RH and Bottom sides of the pixmap would appear as thin bands extending the LH and Top sides of the pixmap, i.e. the couple and sports car cut up in a way where it would be impossible to show the full graphic as a pattern fill in any object. What I really wanted was the bitmap to turn into a single tile pattern, i.e. a repetition of 1 both vertically and horizontally. Then I could fill the horseshoe border with the radial colours. It didn't look anything like the pattern on page 189 top. So what should I have done? PDF open: problem with one musical font.

Hi! First post in this forum, but long time inkscape user now, even for basic things. I have a problem. Im printing from a musical score program to pdf. I want to open that PDF in Inkscape (0.46, last version), but even the preview of the document is fine in the import dialog, when Inkscape open it, the font is not showed properly. The font is called "SToccata" and is in the windows\fonts folder properly installed, but Inkscape dont show it in the fonts menu. I tried the workaround of the faq for issues with fonts (even it says that .46 solved the problem). Beyond that, the font is embedded in the pdf. Hi First greetings all - am new to the list but avid Inkscape (ab)user and advocate for a few years now using it in most of my graphic and web design work. Had a question someone on list might be able to help me with. I'm aware of kerning individual letters in Inkscape, but is there a way of applying global kerning to a block of text (so that each letter in the group undergoes the same amount of kerning?) Filter effects

Export EPS with transparent background

Using Inkscape trunk: I have a logo I maintain in a master SVG file with document properties backgrount white #FFFFFFFF. For a transparent copy, I manually save with the document-properties background transparent #FFFFFF00. For the transparent version, PNG export works fine, but Encapsulated Poststscript EPS always renders a white background when pasted into OpenOffice-2.3. OpenOffice-2.3 does not seem to support SVG 'insert Picture'. How do I create an OpenOffice-compatible vector format with transparency? Thanks.

Startup problem in OS X

Hi, I've upgraded my computer and reinstalled Inkscape but it doesn't seem to run. I haven't installed the OS X developer kit, but X11 was installed when I setup Matlab. I have installed the latest version of XQuartz (v2.1.4). When I click on the Inkscape icon I get the "While Inkscape is open, its windows can be displayed... The first time this version of Inkscape is run it may take several minutes before the main window is displayed while font caches are built." After I click "OK" nothing happens. I've waited, rebooted and started again and there has been no display of the main window. Does anyone have a suggestion for how I can fix this? Thanks! James

Drawing streets

Hi, I'm currently drawing a map, and I'm stuck with on how to draw the streets properly. The streets should consist of parallel lines with a defined fill color and a somewhat darker stroke color. I already read what Tavmjong wrote in his book: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths-Creating.html#Paths-Bezi… Basically, I understand the approach and got it to work drawing one comparatively simple stroke, but how do I get the lines being exactly parallel and smooth? I only manage to get it right with a lot of tweaking, but this way too time-consuming when I want to draw an entire map. Can anybody help? TIA, Claus

I'm proud to present the last gimpgallery release, 0.8. You find it at http://test.gimpgallery.net As you may already know gimpgallery is a project of a gimp website especially meant to host and show images and to share xcf sources too. It is the first attempt to create a community of gimp artists, giving them a suitable space for their works, projects and ideas. Gimpgallery is made with drupal, the well known opensource cms and we started developing it from inkscapegallery (http://inkscapegallery.net). It was already a good social network software, with most of the features you're getting used to but we worked a lot to make it even better. This new release presents many improvements since the last announce and a better cross browsing. We're supporting firefox 2, opera 9x, ie7 and ie6 (there are a couple of disclaimer for ie users). There's an issue with konqueror, instead, due to a javascript not supporting it. We fixed a lot of issues with internet explorer, as you may see on the "random gallery" at http://test.gimpgallery.net/slideshow If you're a gimp user try it out, every gimp artist now has its own profile, gallery and slideshow We made a new home page (http://test.gimpgallery/home) and we are trying to make things work like we wish to. gimpgallery is an image gallery website, it doesn't produce news or tutorials, so we took some rss feeds from the best internet resources about gimp and we placed in the home page, giving infos and links. Indeed, we're trying to build a network of gimp websites, everyone with its own attitude, so we will link gimptutorials.net for didactics, gimp.org and gimpusers.com for the news and we would like them to link us when a user will look for images. In the home page you see an arrangement for a new feature, an interview with a gimp artist that we might change every week or something like that, it is called "a few words with..." There's a fully customized submission and registration skin, that is quite new in the drupal world. We must test it so we hope you to help us registering and posting many contents. We have the forum where to inform us about bugs or software's bad behaviors . I don't want to annoy you with a long description (even because there would be too much to say :-) i just ask you to spend ten minutes of your time to browse it and i ask you to do this deeply, because there's a lot to see. Don't mind the images actually, 'cause we have only a few images really coming from gimp artists, some others come from inkscapegallery and they stand only for test. SVG opening problem

Hello, I use Inkscape Apr 1 2008 on Windows XP. I also use the program Geogebra, and I want to export my works to SVG and then edit them in Inkscape. But any exported SVG file I get can not be opened by Inkscape, it says "Failed to load the requested file". But on the other hand my Firefox displays them well. A teacher at the school came to me (I was the technology coordinator for the district at the time) and she said that the kids wanted to have a yearbook class like the one present at the standard high school. Of course there was no funding for it. I set them up with Inkscape (running both on Windows on the few standard PC's they had and the Linux thin clients that drove the primary computer lab) and Tav's book, gave them a couple into lessons, and off they went. A semester later they published a yearbook, I believe the first one the alternative HS had ever done. It was small, maybe 20 pages. In my opinion though it looked just as good, if not better than, the one turned out by the students at the standard HS, without all the templates and support provided by the yearbook publisher! Hi, I am able to make some nice drawing.Great! I have 2 grouped objects I want to superpose, but without the transparence. I want to overlap it (like a normal ms paint program would) . However I tried using paths ... with these grouped objects and do not manage to do it. What is the way to accomplish this ? Best Regards Steph
