Using to different fonts in the same text string

Hi, Since I'm typing lines that contain multiple language (Chinese+French) I need to be able to at least have the Chinese with its font (one of the arphic fonts, esp. uming.ttf), and the rest with another font (DejaVu serif or Times New Roman). How can I achieve this? I'm using the latest autopackage (dates from september I think, I haven't seen any newer ones on the site). Thanks a lot, Loic

Hi All, I've just started the Masters degree in Typeface Design at the University of Reading (for which Gentium was a submitted project) and we're expected to do a non-latin script complement to our font, and I'd thought I'd ask around if anyone here has any opinions about the following: Are there non-latin scripts that free software fonts do not cover at all at the moment? Which non-latin script communities are adopting free software and would benefit from more fonts? :-) -- Regards, Dave

viewBox and inkscape.svg's with other programs...

Let me get this strait. I am developing a program to make svg's that where created in inkscape and merge them together to make an avatar. http://launchpad.net/memaker. If I am not mistaken, the viewBox is the area of which is veiwable by aplications? This may be why we have this bug... When we merge multiple images with our merging library, the images don't showup correctly in the preview screen, and when they are saved... they are in the right proportions... but not in the right viewBox area. To best explain it... I would just try the program out. Select a head and a feiw other features and you will see the changes.... then save the image and look at it in inkscape. text editing???

Hello, I am using the August 30th build (as with the more recent ones I can't save as PS/EPS, it closes the program), and there is something that I think is wrong with text editing: If I have a long one-line text, and hit <enter> in the middle of it, I end up with two separate block of text, no longer one text. Import/Export of bitmaps

Could someone offer guidance as to why a bitmap (PNG) measuring 600 x 350 px becomes 640 x 373 px after a round trip through Inkscape 0.45? I'm running on Windows XP SP2 and my objective is to add some drawing elements to a bitmap image (in their own layer(s) and within the dimensions of the bitmap). The original image was created at 96dpi, however it appears to "grow" on import to Inkscape. Inkscape preferences are also set to export at 96dpi, resulting in the over-sized new bitmap. Selecting objects with same stroke-paint and/or same stroke-style

Hi everyone, can anybody tell me if there is a possibility to select objects like curves and lines by their stroke-paint and/or their stroke-style? Is such a feature available or planed? The reason why I'm searching for this feature is this: I'm a technical writer and sometimes I've got to put technical drawings from CAT-systems into my documentations. I've read in the inkscape-roadmap that their is a dxf-import/export planed for version 0.51 and it would be nice to work with this files in inkscape. The lines in this documents have got different colours and different strokes that have got different meanings - in most cases i put all this colours into black for printed documentation - the meaning of the colours isn't important at most places and its easier to read than all lines are black. To still keep the information in that drawings (this is useful in some cases) i differ the width of the stroke e.g. all red lines -> 0.25mm, all green lines -> 0.21mm … In Illustrator this is possible by selecting all objects by stroke-paint and stroke-style. Well, than this feature doesn't exists I'll post this suggestion into the developer-mailinglist. It would be great than this actions would be available at the same time with the dxf-import/export. Hi, PostScript/EPS export uses PostScript level 2 and (sometimes) level 3 operators. According to the EPS specification, a LanguageLevel comment is then mandatory. However, Inkscape does not provide one. -- Johan

Hi bulia, Joshua, and all: I apologize for my delay in replying to your messages. I just got back from the UIST conference, where I met many UI researchers -- and fellow Inkscape users. Thanks for your enthusiasm about the undo-saving feature! We would like to release the code for this for all the reasons you mentioned: to comply with the GPL, to get users across platforms, and ultimately to contribute to the Inkscape project. [We'd also welcome help identifying and fixing bugs. :)] What is the best way to do this? convert .svg or bitmap to .dxf

I know that there is at least one utility that will convert .dxf to .svg. However, is there one that will convert going the other way, from .svg (or a bitmap) to .dxf? I am looking for something open source, if possible. I have found a couple of shareware windows only programs. The end goal is this: To be able to scan something, convert it to a .dxf file which will then be converted for a Trumpf laser cutter to cut that shape out of sheet metal. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Don't let your dream ride pass you by. ruler, grid and dimensions

Hello there, I've started using Inkscape a while a go, as an Xfig replacement. I'm quite dependent on the grid and rulers, and am a bit puzzled by Inkscape's ways - unfortunately, I couldn't google anything useful out of the net. So, I was wondering whether someone would care to comment on the following points: 1. is it possible to make the vertical ruler conform to the internal coordinates, ie, I tend to use the XML editor to make corrections, and it would be useful to have the ruler conform to these. 2. can the grid also conform to these coordinates? I put a box on (0,0) using the XML editor, but the grid lines don't match the box edges 3. can it be that the ruler and grid don't match? When I pull a guide, I see that the cursor coordinates match the grid line, but not the ruler tick - say, 100 in the grid and cursor, 98 in the ruler. Looking forward to any comments, Renato

Text vertical align based on descenders

Obviously the "f" letter, which is a descender, goes below the line. Actually the text location (13,8) determines the placement related to the baseline of the font: i'd like to place at (13,8) the REAL bottom-left corner of the font. So, simply valign to bottom instead of baseline, or move up the text item by descender's amount. I have to do this in scripting, as this is part of a PHP script which invokes inkscape to manage the SVG file. I was only able to imagine 2 solutions, but was not able to apply any of them. So here they are: 1) is there any SVG option, recognized by inkscape as well, that permits this? In SVG specs i saw the "dominant-baseline" and other baseline related params, but none seems to have effect in inkscape 2) can you think at any way to calc the descender offset via scripting? Something like a function: get_descent(fontfile,is_italic,is_bold,textline) Which , i thins case, would look like get_descent("/pathtofonts/times.ttf",1,1,"for") Hope someone can help in some way, every suggestion will be really appreciated. Inkscape and digitizers

Hello everyone, I have been using Inkscape for quite some time, and I admire this tool. I am not a professional artist, but I often use it for small charts or simple drawings; and to extend my capabilities, I purchased a digitizer. On the Windows version of Inkscape, the digitizer is detected, everything works as expected, except one detail: I cannot use my mouse to do anything but select a new tool or change options in the GUI. I am unable to edit the image itself using the mouse, unless I disable the digitizer. For instance, if I press F1, the selector tool is becoming active, but when I click on an object on the canvas itself - nothing happens; I can only select objects with the digitizer's pen. I haven't found a setting in Inkscape to alter this behaviour (v.0.45.1, built in March 2007). Is this normal behaviour? I find it quite counter-intuitive, because I became quite efficient with using my laptop's touchpad to manipulate objects - and now I cannot do that anymore. Can someone shed some light on the subject? I am also running Inkscape on a Fedora Linux desktop; in that case the digitizer is not detected by Inkscape (nor GIMP), although the driver seems to be installed properly and I can see events coming from the digitizer when I press something on it. Problems with query on texts

Hello. I need to get the geomtery of a text element. What i need to do is "fit" the text inside that rect. To do this, i use this file (which is a temp file) to query width and height in order to obtain values to apply the correct scale transforms over it. The problem is that it seems texts are not parsed correctly at all. As far as i know, SVG user units should be 90 for 1 inch. So, doing [query-result]/90 gives me the inches value. Here, the list of query commands performed on both text and rect elements. Below each command, i wrote 3 numbers: [query-result] - [query-result]/90 - inkscape (gui) shown inches value inkscape -I "text_2_check" -W test.svg 419.81271 - 4.6645856666666666666666666666667 - 5.042 /usr/bin/inkscape -I "text_2_check" -H test.svg 87.39 - 0.971 - 0.730 /usr/bin/inkscape -I "textbbox_2_check" -W test.svg 1420.5 - 15.783333333333333333333333333333 - 15.783 /usr/bin/inkscape -I "textbbox_2_check" -H test.svg 207.6 - 2.3066666666666666666666666666667 - 2.307 As you can see, the "textbbox_2_check" values are correct, and query/gui values are equal. But "text_2_check" values are completely different... Why? Is there a way to get the correct width/height of a text element? Inkscape has a default theme on OS X

Hello everyone, As of revision 16000 (yes I like round numbers, I think I also did commit number 15000!), development versions of Inkscape have a default GTK theme on OS X (no more of these ugly dark grey windows!) It is probably impossible for GTK to reproduce Aqua exactly, hence the theme does not aim at being an Aqua clone as other themes tried (and in my opinion, did not succeed). It rather tries to "fit" correctly with the rest of the interface. The theme is based on Clearlooks-Quicksilver which already features light gray colors, menu and text highlights and a smooth 3D feel. Further improvements were added such as: - aqua scroll-bars - Lucida Grande font - highlight and scroll-bars colors that use Mac OS X Appearance settings (aqua vs graphite, or blue vs grey vs graphite vs...). However you need to restart Inkscape for colors to change after you changed them in OS X preferences. In addition, Inkscape won't override the local theme preferences you may have in a ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file (so if you want to see the theme in Inkscape, temporarily move this file somewhere else). CMS display adjustment change

Hi, I just checked in an update with icc color profiles and setting display calibration. Now upon startup latest SVN Inkscape will search the standard locations for profiles ~/.color/icc /usr/local/share/color/icc /usr/share/color/icc Then under the misc preferences you'll have a checkbox for enabling display calibration, along with a drop-down combo box that allows you to pick between all RGB display profiles found. Give it a rundown and let me know how it's behaving. Thanks.

Exported gradients and Adobe Reader 8

Hi all, Last year, I have used Inkscape to make a nice A0 poster with gradients. I exported the original svg to pdf and sent the file to my favorite printing shop. One year later, when I open the pdf file, I don't see the gradients any more. Of course when I open the svg file with Inkscape 0.45 the gradients are here. So my question is : if I ask them to reprint the file (I don't know what is the application they use) will the gradients be printed ? Is there a problem in the way that Inkscape export the gradients which could be broken by recent versions pdf software ? Thanks for your help S.

In the past I've used autodesk autosketch (a cut down version of autocad) for "non-cad" scientific/technical illustrations for publication in papers etc. One feature which I find makes drawing easier is the ability to set snapping constraints, like "endpoint", "midpoint", "centre", "tangent" when both drawing an element and selecting to transform an existing element (the cursor jumps and changes shape to indicate which snap is currently in action). I wondered if any similar feature exists in inkscape, or whether it might be considered for the roadmap? Thanks

cannot save as EPS/PS

Hello all, I am using the latest build (autopackage) in Linux, and I cannot save as PS or EPS. I always get an error msg and Inkscape closes. So far, I've been saving as PDF and then using pdftops, but it was really easier saving directly from Inkscape. Idiosyncratic mouse behavior in Windows!

I've just installed Inkscape on a Windows XP machine and am having major problems with the mouse. I've tried both the latest distro and the stable one with no difference in behavior. On clicking the mouse pointer on the Inkscape window, the action takes place far to the right of the window, not under the pointer. Not only does this make creating objects difficult, it make selecting them impossible! BTW, I've not found how to make the grid finer than the default 5mm one. Can it be done (like in Xfig)? Snapping ellipses/circles/arcs

"failed to load the requested file" error message

When I use Inkscape to edit a SVG, when Inkscape launches it opens with just a black box. If I close it and try to open it again I get a "failed to load the requested file" error message. Any help would be great. Sometimes it seems Inkscape does not want to launch or stalls. When I try to launch again, it will stall for about 30sec, then open both request. Help!! OK I don't post here much, I live in lurkdom LOL I seem to remember something about being able to cut to a craft robo personal cutter direct from inkscape - tell me I did NOT dream this? Inkscape SVG extension / CMYK support

Hi. I was wondering there is any place where I could have more information about feature support for Inkscape SVG vs plain SVG. Also, I believe SVG does not support CMYK colour space colours (as per Tavmjong Bah's brilliant userguide), and this is important for logos and even EPS export gets imported in Scribus with RGB colours.... Applying current transform to path

Does anyone know a way to make the current transforms on a path apply themselves to the nodes? In other words I want the "transform" attribute of the path to be the identity matrix. (after first applying itself to the nodes in the path) You can trick it to happen by Ctrl-K joining with another path, then splitting again but I was wondering if there was a more direct way. pattern not into pdf

hello all I was just finishing another cave map. It is a sandstone cave, so there is a lot of sand on the ground, which is represented by small dots (circles). I created a pattern from some circles to represent the sand, and applied it to a large polygon area. fine. now I export it to a pdf and the pattern is gone! So I tried to convert the pattern to an object, in the hope that this would create lots of small circles where they where in the pattern, but it just made the original set of circles again.. Best way to convert Inkscape to PDF?

Hi all, I've created a schematic of a motor control circuit in Inkscape, and want to convert it to PDF. File-Save_as and then picking PDF for file type produces an image extremely pixelated on all curves, especially when viewed with Ghostview. Acroread looks better but is still pixulated on curves. It prints fine, but I want to use it as a presentation tool, so it must view well on the computer. Exporting as bitmap (.png) and then converting to PDF was even worse. File->save_as postscript and encapsulated postscript, and then converting with ps2pdf was also pixelated. The least pixelated result I got was to save as XCF (Gimp native format), open with Gimp, save as postscript, then ps2pdf. In Acroread it looked great at all zoom levels, and in ghostview it looked great at 100%, and halfway decent at other zoom levels. However, it converted it to portrait and cut off the left side. I can fix that with a known workaround that if needbe, but before I go to all this trouble, I'm wondering if any of you know a good way to make a high quality, non-pixelated PDF from an Inkscape drawing. Hi, I've just installed the Inkscape. I have e3works 5x3 tablet. It was detected by the Inkscape and is listed under the devices. The only thing is that the Y axis is inverted for some reason: you move the pen down, the cursor moves in the opposite direction, ie up. The axis is inverted right around the middle of the page. To explain more, if you pick the freehand tool and place it at the top edge of the 'paper', the drawing will start from the bottom edge of the screen (while the 'pen' cursor itself will be at the top, where it should be). As you move the pen down, the line is being drawn from bottom up. As you close the center of the page the cursor 'meets' the line. As you keep on drawing past the center of the page, the cursor goes down while the line itself keeps on going towards the top. The tablet worked OK with other Vector or Bitmap graphic editors (PaintShopPro, Xara, etc) I tried. Is it smth that can be fixed through the configuration or it's a bug? Also, I'm planning to get UC-LOGIC 9x12 tablet. I wonder if anyone has used this tablet with the Inkscape and if everything works properly with it... Thanks, Vlad

Hi, I have Fedora 7 and want to install the latest development build (autopackage based installation package). I don't know whether my install will go file on Linux if I download the autopackage. Isn't there a simple directory installation that I can simply download and copy in one of my directories? Like the one you have for Windows? It would be great if you could point me to such a directory installation tarball? Otherwise, I fear that after downloading I will fall into resolving the dependency hell. -- Best regards, Asif

Fill with multiple outline segments

I'd like to be able to create a single filled object whose outline has multiple segments, with the multiple segments having different colours and styles. I have a fudged example at http://audilab.bmed.mcgill.ca/~funnell/test_fill_multsegs.svg where I've overlaid 2 objects to get the desired visual effect. Is there a way to do this in such a way that I can later edit the shape of the outline and have the fill adjusted automatically? Thanks.

Gray screen after launching Inkscape and X11

Hi, I am new to the list. I have just downloaded Inkscape (Inkscape-16090-i386.dmg) on my imac. I use OSX 10.4.10 and I followed very closely the steps and installed the X11 from the installation DVD. When I opened Inkscape, it launched with X11. However the screen that I see is only a gray screen with the Inkscape window (pls see attached picture). I cannot see my desktop nor other applications. Is it normal? I want to have Inkscape working with other application without the necessary quitting Inkscape. Please help. Thanks.

PDF Creation

Hi all, I have two files to insert into latex document, which I would like to insert as PDF (not eps or png, those work just fine). They are both attached. All my tries were in vain, from blank PDFs (saving directly to PDF) to corrupted PDFs (plain SVG -> IM convert), or cut images (eps -> ps2pdf). Any ideas on how to get these to PDF?
